Mcelog help - cpu failure?

My machine shuts down for no apparent reason...usually when running apt-get update or when trying to load a webpage (running crunchbang at the moment).
The same happens with other distros and with windows (BSOD/shutdown).
I've already ruled out memory module problems (ran memtest86 and also tried new DIMMs) and PSU problems - tested with 2 other PSUs.
The motherboard seems fine too, there are no swollen capacitors.
I'm thinking the CPU might be failing. It's an AMD Athlon64 X2 5600+. I disabled the second core, but that didn't help and sadly I can't disable cpu0 to see what happens then.
Also got a kernel panic at one point:

After running mcelog, I got the following:
Hardware event. This is not a software error.

That screenshot indicates you are running 32-bit kernels with PAE enabled ?
Are you also running 32-bit / pae on windows and those other distros you tried ?
Either way, try running a 64-bit kernel .
NOTE : if it's really a hardware problem, running 64-bit won't help.
However, PAE often has problems and 32-bit linux tends to get less attention then 64-bit nowadays.

  • PC no longer starts, possible CPU failure?

My 875p Neo used to work fine, then suddently stopped working. Now when you give power to the box the set of D-Bracket LEDs are all showing red. (they initially flash briefly all green, then go red). No beep from speaker at all. Clearing the BIOS similar has no effect.
In checking the manual, 4 red LEDs mean a possible CPU failure. So I have tried reseating the CPU and now replacing it for a new one (3Ghz P4). Neither having any effect.
Is this likely that both of the CPU's had died (the 2nd one being brand new), or a m'board failure? Any help before I return the m'baord welcome.
Rest of machine is running pair of 120Gb RAID1 drives, + 9600XT graphics card.
    regards
    Al

Well I have to say that the Chances of Having 2 P4's that are Faulty is Pretty Slim Indeed . I assume that you have Checked the Powersupply and all of the Connections mainly the 20 Pin Main Connector and the 4 Pin CPU Connection?....I would try another PSU (Borrow one) Before Returning the Board..Please tell us What Brand and the Specs of your PSU ......Sean

  • HP Touchsmart tx2 1015au CPU failure

My computer is flashing once followed by a pause and then continues with this pattern.  I understand this means CPU failure.  This is the second time this has happened.  I managed to get it fixed last time as it was under warranty. Unfortunately this time i have missed the warranty timeframe by a month.  I would like to replace the cpu myself but I'm not sure what part (brand, product number etc) to get.
    Can anyone help?
also if you know of a good youtube video that shows how to replace it that would be great.
I will be buying a new laptop but would  like to get the data off this one.  If there is another way to get it ( put the hard drive into another computer? - not sure if this is what stores all the data and if this is possible) any suggestions would be appreciated.
    Thanks

You don't need to replace the CPU if all you want is to get your data. You can remove the harddrive and get a SATA connection and access the harddrive as you would an external harddrive (via USB)

  • What is the problem when it says Cpu failure

Just before my power mac G5 quit it said Cpu failure repeatly down the left side of the montior. Is this the end of my power man as I know it.

If the CPU (Central Processing Unit) has failed you have a dead Mac. A new motherboard will cost your around 80% of a new Mac. Time to dig into those savings!

  • 1 flash of scroll/caps lock - cpu failure? options? pavillion dv5

I read that one blink of the scroll lock / caps lock indicates CPU failure. True? Options?
I had taken out battery, unplugged and held down power key and it came back on, but after I shut the lid and tried to get back on later - just the blinks - now nothing will get it back on.

  • Replaced CPU ... still get CPU failure blink code

I have a dv7-4060US, purchased in July, 2010, so it's out of warantee now.  About Christmas or so, it died on me, and the blink code at startup said that it was a bad CPU.  I've got a new laptop now, so there wasn't any urgency to repairing the old one, so I didn't get around to this until last weekend.
I bought a new CPU for it, and followed the service manual instructions for replacing the chip, but after powering it back on, I still get the same issue - blank screen, single blink.  Yes, the part number on the CPU matches the part number from the old one.  Yes, it's inserted correctly in the ZIF socket.
    Any suggestions?

It was the motherboard not the CPU. CPU failures are very rare; motherboard failures common. I don't put a great deal of stock in blink codes.

  • Please help - CPU trouble (mainly in Logic Pro).

    Hi,
I've had my Mac Pro for 3 & 1/2 years. It's a Quad-Core Intel Xeon 2.66 GHz with 12GB RAM and 3 640GB HDs. I know this spec is nowhere near the scale of other people's machines at this point in time, but it doesn't justify the speed mine runs at. I primarily use my Mac for music production, mainly in Logic Pro 9 and Sibelius 7.
Although it generally seems to be running quite slow, my biggest problem is when using Logic. I mainly compose orchestral music, using Eastwest Symphonic Orchestra Gold, Spitfire Albion I (via Kontakt), Ivory Synthogy Grands II and Spectrasonics Omnisphere. For the sake of this thread, I'll use the track I'm working on currently as an example...
I have 40 tracks with separate instances of Play (for Eastwest Gold) and Kontakt (Albion I) running. (I've tried multi-outputs, but the inability to Freeze tracks is rather obstructing.) There are also a few auxilliary tracks with Logic's compressor & Eastwest Spaces running - no more than 8 separate instances. I also have a 14-minute video running. Currently, I don't have many tracks recorded, but as they begin to build up, Logic just can't handle it - and that's running on 512 samples I/O buffer size and a 'Large' Process Buffer Range. What's more, if I load a single instance of Ivory Grands II in, about 1/7th of my CPU bar is consumed simply when it's idle. I hope this covers all bases, but you get the idea...
I've researched so much and tried it all - using Freeze tracks extensively; hardware test; disk utility; clearing my system HD, including moving my sample libraries to my other HDs (my main HD is currently at about 20% capacity); and probably a myriad of other things that I can't think of right now. As you can imagine, I've spent a lot of money on this system, and to be behaving like this after 2 years (this has been an ongoing problem for quite some time...) is extremely frustrating and upsetting.
Any help on the matter would be greatly appreciated — thank you.

He, the OP, does not appear to have a 3,1 Early 2008 at all.
Processor upgrades for those are fewer and harder to find and he would already have 8-core.
A copy paste of the system profile, minus serial number, helps.
Three SSDs, one for system, and two on Sonnet Tempo Pro PCIe SSD, would go a long ways.

For best performance on Mac Pro, install memory in risers symmetrically
The Mac Pro comes with two memory riser cards, each with four DIMM slots. With a total of eight slots, you can add up to 32 GB of memory.
Note: DIMMs must be installed in pairs of equal size from the same vendor. For instance, you must not have one or three DIMMs on either riser at any time. Additionally, two DIMMs from different vendors should not be combined and used as a pair.
Other configurations of DIMM pairs are still compatible with Final Cut Studio, but may not achieve the same performance levels as when DIMM pairs are installed on both risers evenly.

  • Dv7-1135nr cpu failure?

I am having a problem with my hp pavilion dv7-1135nr with Windows 7 64 bit. I'll start from the point that it started having issues.
My wife had been telling me that he laptop had been overheating for some time, but I attributed it to the fact that she usually was using it while lying across the bed with the fan smothered in blanket. Then it got to the point that it would shut down all of a sudden. We discussed ways to counteract the overheating (never thought to take it apart and clean the fan and cooling vents though). Then the battery began to not hold a charge and she could only use the laptop if it was plugged in. Then that became unpredictable - sometimes it would turn on, sometimes not. Then it got to where the laptop wouldn't turn on at all, but the charge indicator light would be lit with the charger plugged in. Then one day, no charge indicator light, so I tested the charger and it was fried. I bought a new charger and battery. I charged the laptop, but when I turned it on...
    - Power up
    - All standard LED indicators light up
    - Screen stays blank
    - Fan blows for 3 seconds and DVD drive is accessed
    - Silent for the next 10 seconds or so until the fan starts up again and CAPS and NUM LOCK lights blink 3 times simultaneously, then don't blink for 2 seconds, then blink 3 times again and this continues...
I tried rebooting, tried to enter bios on startup, I tried fn + f4, fn + f5, Windows logo, etc., but to no avail.
I researched possible problems and solutions online and concluded that the issue was a fried motherboard. I bought a refurbished replacement and after I installed it - nothing changed! Same as before.
I realize that the refurbished motherboard could be defective, but I started researching things related to a bad cpu (after all, it had been overheating for awhile and when I switched out motherboards, the cooling vents were packed full of dust). I stumbled upon a very similar issue on your support forum - http://h30434.www3.hp.com/t5/forums/mobileforumtopicpage/board-id/Hardware/thread-id/56653 - but the posts never concluded with a solution.
I tried what was suggested by the provost Erico:
"Chances are that you have a dead system board. CPUs just don't die very often.
Have you tried a hard reset?
Remove the battery and unplug the DC power adapter.
press and hold the power button for more than fifteen seconds.
plug in the DC power adapter (leave the battery out for now)
    press the power button
    Best regards,
    erico"
This didn't solve the problem. So I tried something else that was suggested by erico:
"Yours is one of the rare notebooks that have an easily removable CMOS battery.
Check the Service & Maintenence guide (page 63) for istructions on removing it. It is worthwhile doing this to reset/clear CMOS before doing anything else. Remove it and all other power sources, press the power button for a few seconds. replace the CMOS battery (or leave it out) and use the power adapter to see if the beast will boot up."
That didn't work either. I tested the CMOS battery and it's good. I checked the hard drive on my pc, it's good. So, it seems that the only possible problems are:
    CPU
    RAM
    Motherboard
    LCD display
So, that's where I am right now. I'm leaning towards the problem being a fried CPU, but I'm afraid to spend more $ on something that might not be the issue. What do you think the problem is? What are your suggestions for diagnosing the problem? Thanks for your time and effort on this.
    Forever grateful,
    Jeremy

    Hi there @chiarcher
Welcome to the HP Support Forums! It is a great place to find the help you need, both from other users, HP experts and other support personnel.
I understand that your computer is no longer starting and you are seeing a repeating pattern of flashing LEDs. I am happy to help with this.
As it happens your computer is telling you what is wrong with it.  HP Notebook PCs - Computer does not start and the LEDs blink or the computer beeps
From that page you will find a table including: LEDs blink 3 times         Memory       Module error not functional
The same page includes some things to try to test. It could be one or both memory modules, or the slots on the board that are the problem.
Let me know how it goes, just read though the section on the memory error and see if you can isolate it.

  • Help with Failure ID code

My Computer Product ID is: G9D66UA#ABA (HP 15 laptop). I dropped this laptop, afterwhich it was still running, though quite fitfully. After a restart it came to a blue screen with a message saying it was running diagnostics and attempting to fix problems and further said "this may take more than an hour". After approxamately 16 hours, the same blue screen displayed same message. I later pressed F2 on start up , ran a couple tests and the following Failure ID came up for each test ran: RTTSMG-77K7MS-XD7V6J-60XJ03 Can someone please tell me what this failure code means. Also, what are my repair, and especially, data recovery options (unfortunately no recent backups)? Any help would understanding this failure ID code would be greatly appreciated, EE

Whenever the Hard Disk Short DST test fails with 24 Digits Failure ID ,that indicates that the Hard Disk Drive has failed and that requires a replacement to resolve the issue This issue could be due to Application or driver conflicts, virus issues, file corruptions due to incompatible applications, improper shutdowns, update failures due to conflicts, sudden power surges, if notebook is dropped etc.. HP will provide a replacement Hard Disk Drive if the Notebook warranty is Active, If not you need buy a SATA Hard Disk Drive from a retail shop nearby Please make sure you are getting at least equal capacity as the original one in order to use Recovery Disks. If you need you can buy a larger, but not smaller capacity Hard Disk Drive. For example if you have a 500GB Hard Disk Drive you can upgrade it to 750GB Hard Disk Drive but not 320GB Hard Disk Drive Please try the below shown troubleshooting steps once:Step 01. Remove the battery and unplug the AC/Power AdapterStep 02. Press and hold the Power button for more than 30 SecondsStep 03. Plug in the AC/Power Adapter (leave the Battery out for now)Step 04. Press the Power button and check if the Unit works normal If the above mentioned steps does not help, then you can try reseating the Hard Drive on your Notebook If the issue persists again please Contact HP if your HP Notebook is under warranty, HP would replace the Hard Disk Drive and provide you a Recovery media to restore factory operating system after replacement (if you've not yet created Recovery Discs/USB Media) Note: Back up all the personal data to an external drive if it's possible. Otherwise you could connect the failed HDD via SATA to USB adapter with another PC or same PC after replacement of HDD & re-installation of OS and try copying /recovering the files. • Dual G5 with 1 CPU failure

hi, has anyone had this happen to them? I've got a Dual G5 2.5GHz machine which now appears to only have 1 CPU. confirmed this in System Profiler, but for the past two years I had 2 working CPUs. does anyone think I have something going on other than a real hardware failure. btw, I ran Hardware Test from the CD and all tests passed.

Do you have CHUD tools installed? It use to be that you could do a stand-alone download, but lately, with 4.4, no longer available. With it you can disable one processor. There is also an Open Firmware command that will disable a cpu that retains that setting through restarts.
    Clearing the "cpus" Setting
The cpus setting is set in NVRAM and will affect all system restarts until the setting is changed or cleared. Use the instructions above to set "cpus" to a different value. To clear the cpus setting, there are three options.
    1. Use the Terminal application to clear the boot-args configuration variable. For example, you could enter the following command within the Terminal application:
    % sudo nvram boot-args=""
This command sequence clears the value of boot-args.
    2. You can clear boot-args by "zapping PRAM."
Restart the system and hold down the "Command-Option-P-R" keys until you hear the boot beep a second time. Release the keys and the system will restart normally with all CPUs recognized. Keep in mind that this also will clear all other custom NVRAM settings.
    3. Finally, you can clear the "cpus" setting by running System Preferences and clicking Startup Disk.
Then switch the startup disk to a different volume. This clears all contents of the boot-args configuration variable and is similar to using the Terminal application to clear this setting.

Hello. When I use Photoshop Elements and click 'Help' I get an offer to update Adobe Community Help from my version 3.2.1.650 to 3.5.0. Every time I try to do that I get a failure number 16822. What does that mean? I got no help from the chat support when I asked them.

The cause is that the help files aren't in that location anymore. The workaround would be to download the pdf files, which you can find here:
