MCS 7800 Series Lab?

Hello,
We have recently upgraded a hodge-podge of MCS 7835 servers.  Some I1's, some I2's, and a single I3.
I was hoping to cannibalize all the RAM and HDD's to one server and make a lab/tools box.  For this, ESXi seems to be the best fit - however, I can't seem to get ESXi running on these boxes!
The BIOS configuration is quite scant... so I'm not sure if this machine is even capable of ESXi.  Based on the actual hardware specs, it should be capable... but perhaps there's some limitation of the motherboard or other hardware?
I was able to get ESXi 5.0 installed, but honestly I have no clue what made the difference.  I tried virtual DVD thru the out of band management interface (IBM's IMM), I tried a physical DVD and a USB key.  All would result in simply a black screen.  I could see the disc being accessed (all 3 types!) but it would not boot.
Eventually, I did get the physical disc to boot and I installed ESXi.  Now, whenever I reboot the box I'm met with that same dreaded black screen.  Worst part is, I don't even see the RAID configuration stuff - which makes me think this failure is beyond ESXi... but I could be wrong.
So has anyone done this before?  Is there some special caveats/steps I'm missing?  Would love to turn this old MCS box into something useful.  Thanks!!

I made some progress this morning.  If I boot the ESXi install disc, and then tell it to boot to 'local disk' instead of the installer, it actually works, I can run ESXi.
But seemingly every selection from the BIOS fails.  I'll keep poking at it, but this is just strange.
Here's the boot order:
http://i.imgur.com/72jAY.png
and here's the sad screen after it runs thru that order:
Again, if I use the ESXi install disk and select "boot from local disk" I am able to boot ESXi.  What gives?  The 'ESXi boot' option in the boot order was a 'custom' boot option I made.  Not sure where to go with this...

    Hi Ali,
I'll just add this reference to the good tips from my friend Manish (+5)
Support for the 7800 series in CUCM 8.6.2 was first added with this
    Device Pack;
    Cisco Unified Communications Manager
    Device Package 8.6(2)(24104-1)Release Notes
Cisco Unified Communications Manager Device Package Release 8.6(2)
adds support for the Cisco IP Phones
    7821, 7841, and 7861 running SIP firmware release 10.1(1).
The steps are in this doc

Cisco Unified Communications Manager Does Not Support Recovery of Administration or Security Passwords
Cisco Unified Communications Manager does not support recovery of administration or security passwords. If you lose these passwords, you must reset the passwords, as described in the Cisco Unified Communications Operating System Administration Guide.
The Cisco Unified Communications Operating System Administration Guide calls the section, "Recovering the Administrator or Security Passwords," instead of "Resetting the Administrator or Security Passwords." Access the "Recovering the Administrator or Security Passwords" section to reset the passwords.

I've already tried to comment "load-module module-suspend-on-idle" in /etc/pulse/default.pa file, but it shows idle instead of suspended. Anyone have any idea what might be wrong with the pulseaudio?

  • Fan speed on MCS 7800

Hi. Im not sure if this is the right place to put it but I think so   I repurposed an HP MCS server and put windows server on it..but the fans are CRAZY loud! I know they can be software controlled as they aer when CM is loaded on to it, but now with windows server 2003 I cant seem to find any kind of driver for it.   I went into BIOS and knoced it down a little but theres a long way to go.  the HP site says something about a 'health driver' but I cant find it anywhere.  Any input appreciated!

Hi Here is a new software from Malwarebytes. MBAM is trusted by millions of PC users. It will find programs that aren't necessary on start up

  • CUCM Subscriber Lockout - Not able to log in to the server.

I presently having issues with Subscriber Server - I Can Not login to the server using known good passwords.
Is there a password reset procedure?
Is there a software boot method I can use to reset the password?
I am working with CUCM Version 7.1.5.20000-6 / Cisco MCS 7800 Series Media Convergence Server.
    Help.....

Hello Gareth, thank you for your response to my call for help, however I was able to reset the Subscriber Server Admin and Security passwords by using the following Cisco documentation,.
Now the server is still unreachable within my network, can't even ping the Node, however I can ping my Pub Server.
I noticed the physical Network Ethernet connections are plugged into a different VLAN, but I thinking that should not matter beause I using Static IP addressing.
The phones communicate with the SUB Server, because when I unplug its Ethernet connection some phones Error out and or revert to old past cUser Configurations.
I have done all the usual steps - and the services are running - but it is NOT validating to the Network - I even reset the gateway from the CLI Command interface of the SUB Server.
If you have any ideas I will be happy to hear them...
Step 1 Log in to the system with the following username and password:
    • Username: pwrecovery
    • Password: pwreset
The Welcome to admin password reset window displays.
Step 2 Press any key to continue.
Step 3 If you have a CD or DVD in the disk drive, remove it now.
Step 4 Press any key to continue.
The system tests to ensure that you have removed the CD or DVD from the disk drive.
Step 5 Insert a valid CD or DVD into the disk drive.
The system tests to ensure that you have inserted the disk.
Step 6 After the system verifies that you have inserted the disk, you get prompted to enter a new Administrator
    password.
Note The system resets the Administrator username to admin. If you want to set up a different
Administrator username and password, use the CLI command set password. For more
information, see Appendix A, “Command Line Interface.”
Step 7 Reenter the new password.
The system checks the new password for strength. If the password does not contain enough different
characters, you get prompted to enter a new password.
Step 8 After the system verifies the strength of the new password, the password gets reset, and you get prompted
to press any key to exit the password reset utility.

  • CUCM suddenly Hang, service down, Back to Normal After Reset

my client use CUCM 6.0.1.2000-3 which run in CISCO MCS 7800 Series,
unfortunately this box has end of support of cisco. The issue that happen now the service often HANG suddenly , it occurs 2 - 4 times a day.
i try to monitor from RTMT and found the common partion usage is in more 90%. whether high "common partision usage"  high  is the root that causing server Hang. since i dont see anomaly logs found.
    Anyone have any ideas ?
is there any one have same experience

    Hi Manish
Thank you  for the link, based on my deep analysis and monitoring, in other condition i also found that the disk space was over threshold , as shown in the capture  *)
I thought that this condition can also cause the server to hang, based on experience is there any temporary solution that can be done to reduce the hard disk space, in addition to the upgrade of the device.

    Help,,,,,,,,,,,

    Hi Val,
You can download the recovery ISO from the following location
    http://software.cisco.com/download/release.html?mdfid=282421166&flowid=5328&softwareid=282074294&release=7.1%285b%29&relind=AVAILABLE&rellifecycle=&reltype=latest
Burn it on a DVD and boot up using the recovery iso, then select the options to automatically fix file system and manually fix file system if needed.
Check for any DNS related issues if configured as the network connectiviry errors could be due to the same.
However, looking at the errors and state of services, if the issue persists, i would recommend a reinstall of the subscriber as the Pub will replicate the data to the sub.

  • CUCM on ISR E-Series

Does anyone know if it possible to run CUCM on a ISR E-Series server?  I would make for low cost subscriber at a remote site?

I believe the answer is still no!  It would be a nice solution for small branches though,
    The following are NOT supported:
Cisco or 3rd-party server models that do not satisfy the rules of this policy.
Cisco 7800 Series Media Convergence Servers (MCS 7800) regardless of CPU model
Cisco UCS Express (SRE-V 9xx on ISR router hardware)
Cisco UCS E-Series Blade Servers (E14x/16x on ISR router hardware) with CPUs that do not meet Processor policy requirements.
For additional considerations, please see TAC TechNote 115955.

  • DVI to S-Video (TV) with a 7800 GT?

I just bought a Quad G5, with the BTO 7800GT graphics card. I purchased along with it an Apple DVI to Video (S-Video and Composite) adaptor, Apple M9267G/A. I can't get the computer to recognize that there is an adaptor connected at all. I've tried 2 TVs as well as both S-Video and the Composite cable. I've swapped DVI ports, and rebooted many times. Zapped PRAM as well. No luck, the computer will not recognize ANY device connected to the other DVI port, and nothing displays on the TV--not even a flicker.
I spent ~3 hours on the phone with Apple Product support this morning, and after talking to 3 techs (i called back 3 times after trying things), the 3rd tech said he had 1 document saying the 7800 should support this. I also found via google a small note in the G5 dualcore Technology Overview saying only "The DVI to Video adaptor works with the 6600 LE and 6600 video cards." with no mention of other cards. I showed him this, and he then expressed his frustration of their own documentation telling him 2 different things. BTW the Tech Overview document is linked from the bottom of the main PowerMac G5 page at apple.com. The note is on Page 33. Zoom in about 400% to read it in the fine print. It's footnote #8. It was referenced on Page 33.
The most outrageous thing is that the last tech then transfered me to a 'product support specialist', who informed me that:
    a) Apple can't support the Nvidia video cards, because they're made by Nvidia. He suggested I look at Nvidia's website for help. This seems insane, because of course Nvidia's website has ALWAYS said that all Mac Nvidia cards are built and supported ONLY by APPLE! Further they don't even support the PC cards--they're all only supported by the Vendor who built them. In this case freakin' Apple! Once again the Run-around!. BTW, all the PC 7800 series cards (including the GT) have an extra S-video out connector on them, and as well say in their technical notes that TV-Out functionality is supported directly in the GPU. This is on the same Nvidia tech-note that further down under compatibility says "Mac OSX" as well!
    b) Apple Phone support doesn't support connecting a computer with a BTO card with their DVI to Video adaptor to a TV. He then told me my only support option was to use these forums!
    So here I am.
    I ask for either:
    a) people who have a similar setup and have gotten it working.
    b) people who have a similar setup and can't get it working.
    c) Any other options for getting video out to my TV from this $3500 hunk of hardware.

My experience with Tech Support at most companies tells me that every call gives you a different person, and usually a different 'answer', so maybe something will come down the pipeline...I'd be very interested to find out what you get told when you call.
I was a bit hopeful that a replacement DVI to Video adaptor might help the problem, but your confirmation of the issue is disheartening. I did notice that the PDF 'Power Mac G5 Users Guide' that was on the HD of my new computer specifically says "Connect the DVI end of the DVI to Video Adapter to the DVI port on your Power Mac G5 graphics card that supports TV-out, DVI display port 2." [Page 29]
However, looking at Nvidia's specs on the line of 7800 cards (for PCs) do show they all support S-Video out (although they include an on-card port for S-Video out). It might just be a lack of support for the adaptor in a driver. If so, it's possible the next OS update might add the TV-Out functionality for these cards. It's entirely speculation, but my G4 I used with the TV initially had an ATI XClaim VR 128 PCI card I added, which didn't support TV-Out in OSX until 10.1 or something came out simply because the driver wasn't out until then. Since 10.4.3 came out before the 7800 BTO option was available, it's possible 10.4.4 might support it? I hope. The first few tech support people did tell me specifically their documentation from Apple specifically said that even the BTO option cards should be supported by this adaptor. So maybe the docs are just referencing an unreleased driver update? One can hope at least!
I just don't understand why Apple doesn't include an S-Video port on the cards to begin with...it's not like the cost for the connector should be too bad, especially when the cards are so expensive already. It'd be cheaper than adaptors anyways. Especially for video professionals who might want to view output on a TV screen or something. Of course it seems the engineers working on this first revision of the card weren't entirely paying attention anyways--considering how the thing shipped with DVI ports too close together to fit two DVI connectors simultaneously...the fact that this was caught so late that it couldn't be re-designed, but rather a DVI-to-DVI adaptor had to be shipped with the card makes it seem really sloppy. Very surprising considering the magnificent engineering that went into every other bit of this system. They should have put half the effort into this video card as they did in the Packaging!

  • Radeon HD 7800 (catalyst) + Intel HD graphics (intel-dri) seg fault

    Hello, Arch community!
I'm using two monitors setup: one is connected to the Radeon HD 7800 other is connected to the motherboard D-SUB socket.
    Symptoms:
    - X starts if to use opensource radeon driver.
    - X starts if to use only one screen inside ServerLayout section.
    - X fails to start If two screens are chosen in ServerLayout section and it prints the following log:

I've made a few changes that were mentioned on the Catalyst wiki. They are below:
    1. /etc/default/grub
    GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX_DEFAULT="nomodeset i915.modeset=1"
    2. /etc/modprobe.d/no_radeon.conf
    blacklist radeon
Unfortunately I can't use open-source driver for radeon since I'm getting random frezees of my PC. Especially when some video-content is playing in my browser.
It doesn't relates to main topic (I hope), but let this log be placed here:

  • MCS-7835H3-OFFER= Is a rack mounting kit included?

I have a customer who is getting their MCS7835H2-DMM51K9 server replaced with a MCS-7835H3-OFFER=
All I need to know is, does the MCS-7835H3-OFFER=  come with a rack mounting kit or not? If not, could the existing MCS7835H2-DMM51K9 server's rails be reused?
I'm assuming that it's the same chassis but with a faster processor and more mem/disk and would be a straight swap but can anyone clarify if this "H3" part number comes with a rack mount kit?
    Thanks,
    DR

All currently shipping Cisco MCS 7800 servers include a “generic/third-party rail kit”.
    ● Compliant with 19-inch Industry-standard EIA-310D
    ● Depth range of the slides is from 440mm to 790mm
    ● Threaded racks: M6, 10-32, and 12-24
    ● Also enables punched round and square hole racks

  • AMD 7800 HDMI audio

I have 2 AMD 7800 GPU's in Crossfire and the xf86-video-ati driver installed. I have 2 monitors connected to the 2 DVI ports and an AV Receiver connected to the HDMI port. I have Logitech 2.1 speakers attached to the MD's audio out, but if I want to play music through the receiver, I want to select the HDMI configuration from pulse. If I do, there is no sound. I am running gnome 3.6 with pulse, if that helps. I tried to follow the steps in the ati wiki, but to no avail. Does anyone know what I am doing wrong?

I fixed the audio using pavucontrol. My HDMI card seemed to have 2 channels with same same name:
Cape Verde/Pitcairn HDMI Audio [Radeon HD 7700/7800 Series] Digital Stereo (HDMI)
Cape Verde/Pitcairn HDMI Audio [Radeon HD 7700/7800 Series]
I wasn't able to select the second one without pavu, which somehow was the good one.
