MDD and Fans Blazing

I have a MDD Dual 1.25 with the original 400 watt power supply and fans. This machine used to sit in a server room so the noise it made did not create a problem. It was recently retired from it's position and now will become a desktop for small to medium tasks. The problem is since I reformatted the hard disk and installed Tiger, the lower fan starts increasing it's speed about 60 seconds after the machine is turned on and booted. I installed Temperature Monitor to see if it would reveal anything. According to Temperature Monitor, the breaking point for fan speed is 62C. Once the computer's temperature reaches above 62C, the fans start to rev up. The fans in this unit rev up and up and up and up but the temperature finally settles at around 68C.
The other 2 MDD's in our office run comfortably around 54C, but they had the power supply replacement recall done.
Is the power supply somehow related to the CPU temperature sensor? I decided to replace the variable speed lower fan with a 3 speed fan that is quieter. The computer will only run for about 4 minutes before the goes to sleep because of the CPU overtemp sensor. The heat sink is barely warm. I tried resetting the CUDA chip but that does not see to make a difference.
Any Suggestions?

I'm sure you have already cleaned the case and heat sink, but just a reminder. Also check the orientation of the fan. I think it is possible to install the OEM fan in reverse so that it ***** over the heat sink instead of blowing. Also try removing the heat sink, remove the OEM heat tape (the black crap) and apply a thin coat of good paste (I'm sure Arctic Silver will be recommended by someone). I get better results after 2-5 heat cycles.
My MDD ran about 58 to 62 with the aluminum heat sink. I got hold of a copper one from a 1.42 and now it runs 54 to 58 (and that's overclocked to 1.33).
Lastly consider case mods such as a stepper fan in the 3/4 drive bay.

  • MDD power supply and fan upgrade kit question.

Hello, Its been a few years since I posted anything here and I'm getting ready to (possibly) trade in my mirror drive door 1GHZ dual processor machine on one of the current imac-s.
I'm not real hopeful that putting much work into my current machine is worth it. Here's why:
    1) crazy levels of noise - I wear woodworking hearing protectors when I surf the web. Listening to music on itunes is fine so long as you like a background of low level blow dryer noise!
    2) I'm still running OSX version 10.2.8, I have been too cheap to buy the latest OS. I'm tempted to go out and spend the $119 on 10.5 but I only have the original 256mb of ram installed and since the min requirement of ram is 512, I know I'll need to spend an extra ~50$ on a 512mb PC2700 ram chip. My price tag to do a minimal update is rising...
    3) I would love to neutralize the noise and install the Apple provided MDD power supply and fan retrofit kit that they sent me at no charge several years ago while I was still under warranty. But I never did because the tech at my local (Dayton Ohio) reseller told me that the kit only addressed high noise levels when rebooting in OS9. So I never bothered. Looking on ebay, I see where power supplies for G4's could fetch 75 or 100$ or so.
In summary, here are my questions.
    1) Has anything come along recently to tame MDD G4 fan noise that is easy to install, cost-effective and most of all, something that actually works to decrease the noise?
    2) To get the quietest, quickest performance with the current OS 10.5 should I cut my losses now and trade (or sell on ebay) my MDD, sell the new power supply and just purchase a new machine with the OS already installed?
Thanks a bunch in advance for any assistance...
    from Bill.

    Bill,
Carl has some pretty good points that I'd agree with - trying the replacement PSU and fans should quiet it down somewhat and replacing the stock main fan with a newer, quieter unit will also help. But I'm going to disagree with him on running Leopard on the G4's with a few reservations.
As you might notice from my profile, I'm running Leopard on my dual-867 MDD and find the performance acceptable; perhaps a little slower than Tiger in some respects but it does run well enough within the limitations of the G4's capabilities. The reservation I have about recommending Leopard on a G4 is the graphics card - without Core Image support (which you won't have unless you upgrade the video card) Leopard is going to tax the CPU more and may bog down in some tasks like Quick Look and Cover Flow.
In the end, whether to continue upgrading the G4 is a matter of use and economics. Tiger would be a fine upgrade with minimal cost and squeeze a few more years out of your G4 if you're not requiring software that needs an Intel CPU (like certain iLife '08 apps).

  • New g4 MDD user fan question

hey ya'll, i just picked up a dual 1.25, airport, bluetooth, superdrive, 17inch studio display, and pair of 120 gig harddrives MDD g4, for a ridiculously low price.
how loud are these fans supposed to be? i'm hearing sort of a clunking sound, havn't got a chance to clean it out yet. any ideas? i'm not too worried, gonna use this thing till it breaks. can you buy replacement fans that will fit from third parties? if it works all week i plan on upgrading to 2 gigs of ram and installing leopard.

No.. it doesn't. At least in my eyes, my computer screams, but then again mine is expanded to the full 2GB memory. I would not advise to replace the power supply fans unless you have good soldering skills - Uncle steve made it so difficult for us to change the fans in the power supply - plus, you might wind up electricuting yourself at the same time!
Better to change the Pabst fan or case fan as its called with a better fan such as the Silent-x fan. I don't think the quieter powersupply and fan kit are available from Apple anymore, but you can try.
I have some noise, but not much and its not really that bad.
Dust? Where did you find all that dust at? Let me know, so that I can see if I have any "dust" build-up. When I got this MDD 3 months ago, the owner took care of it in a dust-free enviornment, but looking in my machine from top to bottom, I don't see any dust! I also rubbed my fingers against the small fans in the power supply and NO DUST at all.

  • Satellite A505-S6973 overheating and fan works often

I hate doing this but I seem to have encountered another problem which i have been searching and reading with the hopes of correcting myself. I presently own a Satellite series laptop with an Intel Cor 2 Duo T6500 2.1Ghz processor.
I 've been monitoring my system for performance issues andi've noticed that for sometime (unsure when) the temperature on my system has risen significantly. I'm seeing from my PC Health Monitor that my processors temperature is running at 59% and fan speed is at 78% yet when I place my hand near the cooling fins at the side of my laptop I can barely feel any breeze but a co-worker of mine has a vostro and the fan feels like it's running on NOs.
If there is anything that can be done I'd greatly appreciate this, i'm afraid of loosing my system due to something simple that cause overheating.
N.B. I noticed that at one time different users posted threads stating that after updating there BIOS they experienced overheating problems. If this is the cause of anywhere near it please help.

Are you sure that your notebook is overheating?
In my opinion you cant compare this with other notebook models because every notebook has its own cooling modules and fans and there are not standard parts as on desktop computers. Furthermore its also important which form factor your notebook has. Larger and bigger notebooks have a better cooling assembly as smaller ones.
Anyway, in my opinion you could try cleaning your notebook using compressed air spray. This should always be done from time to time to blow out the dust from the cooling ventilators. Therefore its not necessary to disassemble the notebook.

  • Powermac G5 stuck on grey screen start up and fans running wild

    Hi All
I also have the recurring problem all of a sudden - yesterday all seems well, today am stuck on grey screen and fans getting stronger by the minute. NOTHING works - have been through all sorts of forums and the most I got was to try disk utility - which says all is well - replaced the battery - tried just about anything short of pouring some acid on the **** thing, won't boot from original install CD either - I really need this machine as I earn my living with it and cant afford a new one and why as it was working just perfect - now this mess. In a way don't know why the excellerating fans are not built to simply pick up speed and then eat into the PC board and CPU - at lest this way we know for sure there is nothing we can do.
Does no one here know why the mac is doing this - not even the mac fundies? Unbelievable. I live in Namibia and Apple Mac support here is similar to that on this website - might as well write this on a wall - that is why I am really frustrated... **** Mac

    Follow these steps in order:
    http://support.apple.com/kb/TS2570
The G5 is also subject to solder failure around the RAM slots and memory controller.
It is a fatal condition, but one that can sometimes be temporarily sidestepped by heating the logic board between the RAM slots with a hair dryer.
Heat the board until very warm (hot) then start.
If your machine starts after heating, then you better just leave the machine on all the time.
You never know when the trick won't work......

The kernel is using excessive processor cycles. Below are some possible causes for the condition.
    Throttling
When it gets high temperature readings from the hardware, or low voltage readings from the battery of a MacBook, the kernel may try to compensate by interrupting the processor(s) to slow them down and reduce power consumption. This condition can be due to:
☞ a buildup of dust on the logic board
    ☞ high ambient temperature
    ☞ a worn-out or faulty battery in a portable
☞ the malfunction of a cooling fan, a temperature sensor, a voltage sensor, or some other internal component
Note that if the problem is caused by a sensor, there may be no actual overheating or undervoltage.
If the computer is portable, test with and without the AC adapter connected. If kernel_task hogs the processor only on AC power, charging is causing the machine to heat up. That behavior may be normal for some models. CPU usage should drop when charging is complete.
Apple Diagnostics or the Apple Hardware Test, though not very reliable, is sometimes able to detect a fault. For more thorough hardware testing, make a "Genius" appointment at an Apple Store, or go to another authorized service provider.
If nothing is wrong with the hardware, then whatever you can do to improve cooling may help.
    Installed software
User-installed software that includes a device driver or other kernel code may thrash the kernel. That category includes virtualization software, such as Parallels and VMware, as well as most commercial "anti-virus" products. Some system-monitoring applications, such as "iStat," can also contribute to the problem. You can test for this possibility by completely disabling or removing the software according to the developer's instructions, or starting in safe mode. Note, however, that disabling a system modification without removing it or testing in safe mode may not be as easy as you think.
    Corrupt NVRAM or SMC data
Sometimes the problem is cleared up by resetting the NVRAM or the SMC.
    External display
Connecting an external LCD display to some MacBook Pro models while the lid is open may cause this issue. If applicable, test by closing the lid or disconnecting the display. You might get better results with a newer LED display.

  • MPC800K usb and fan power control problem.

    Hello all,
I own one of these MPC800K (K8M800 Via chipset...) boxes for one week now and since the first day I've always been surprised because both system and cpu fans were stuck to approx. 2100 rpm, whatever the cpu was doing. (Burning or not). It was a little noisy to my taste when just playing mp3 by exemple, so I tried yesterday to flash the mobo with what seemed to be the latest bios available. The board is reporting to be MS-7056, but when I browse MSI support pages, I can see that MPC800K is sometimes claimed to have 7056 or 6276 model motherboard. Confusing. When downloading bios, reference is made to 6276 mb on the download page, then inside the archive, bios file name is "A7056VMS.320". Even more confusing, but I made the choice to believe 7056 and 6276 are the same. (Can anyone confirm...?).
Flashing bios from one usb key ran perfectly, reboot ran perfectly, so did loading Windows (Home Edition). Oh, nice, it seemed to be my day of luck, because favor to this new bios (version 3.20, was running 3.13 before), cpu and system fans were now much more quiet when the cpu was not heavily loaded. Good.  I love silence. Eh, but wait ! What the h... Where does come from this slight but really annoying hissing sound ? Seems to come from the inside of the box... You know, the kind of tipicaly electronical hissing sound, when some composant is subjet to some kind of stress. Then I noticed that the integrated card readers activity led was turned on but there wasn't even any card inserted. Abnormal. Trying to reboot. Ah, good. Led is now turned off. But there's still this annoying hissing sound, and... oh no, cpu and system fans are not quiet anymore, they went back to medium speed... Always.
Let's think. ... Let's try something. Shuting down windows, going to the bios, disabling USB integrated controler (because of the fancy behavior of the card readers led, obviously related to some kind of usb disorder, don't you think ?). Rebooting. Nice ! No more hissing sound, and fans control is now effective. Of course the bad news is that having disabled usb, I've no more usb ports working. Unfortunately, I need them.
Going back to the bios, re-enabling usb support, going back to windows, and playing with usb host controler in the device manager -> As soon as it is disabled, fan control is working perfectly. As soon as I re-enable it, automatic fan control is out of order again.
    The choice is :
    - functionnal USB ports but electronical hissing noises and no fan control
    or
    - fan control, no hissing noises, but no usb either.
Oh yes, I could always come back the old v3.13 bios. USB would be functionnal but I would lose automatic fan control and I would get rid of the hissing noises.
    But :
1/ I would like to have fan control working !!!
2/ I did something I should not have done. (Guess what, I did not dump my old bios prior to flashing the new one, and there is absolutely no archive around the whole "googled" web.)
I also tried to install another version of windows to see how it would handle the situation. Well... I installed W2003 Server, and it's nearly the same mess : no fan control and hissing noise when usb enabled, but effective fan control and no more hissing noise when I disable "Standard enhanced PCI to USB Host Controler", and then a little surprise : usb ports are still working, but I lose 2.0 high speed, everything is falling to 1.1 full speed. (With XP Home, I had to disable VIA enhanced USB host controler, and then all usb support was off).
I think it's likely to be some kind of conflict between usb controler ressources and the way the mobo control the fans. Adress conflict, irq conflict ? I don't see how I could test since the bios doesn't let me change them in any way.
If someone has any idea to let me escape this bad situation, I would be *grateful*.
Maybe another release of the bios could help me ?

    ^
hmm, I have never hear of a USB controller making a hissing noise????
anyway try keeping usb controller enabled and disconnect the usb card reader. there should be a little cable that will enable you to disconnect the card reader. do you get a hissing noise with it disconnected?
eitherway I would think about return the system for another one. or warranty

  • PowerMac G5 Dual 2.5 - Only Boots with Side Cover and Fan Guard OFF!!

I have the strangest problem with my PowerMac G5 Dual 2.5.  This has been my Pro Tools rig forEVER.
At some point early last year, my Mac wouldn't boot.  It would not see the hard drive, and would show that dreaded alternating icon in the middle of the screen indicating as much.  I tried resetting, tried power off/on, tried resetting PRAM.  Nothing.  I took the cover off, and fan guard off to get at the hard drive.  Verified the data and power cable were seated in hard drive.  Cover still off, I booted up the system.  Voila!!!  Booted right up like nothing was ever wrong.  I put the cover back on, and went about my business, passing it off as a one-off power glitch (the power in my house ***** rocks).  Next time I rebooted the Mac, the exact same thing happened.
I can repeat this at will.  If I leave the cover on, the system will not ever, ever boot.  The minute I take the cover and fan guard off, causing the fans to spin at max speed when turned on, the system boots without issue.  So, I reset PRAM and PMU.  I even tried replacing that green/white cylindrical battery on the motherboard.  Reseated power/data cable on hard drive.  ****, I even tried a different hard drive and memory (explained below).  No change.
Since then, I have relegated this system to the emergency backup system, and procured Dual 2.7 G5 PowerMac.  I transferred the pro tools cards, hard drive (without formatting it) and memory (8 GB) to this new 2.7, and have not had a single, solitary issue with it.  So, I know it's not the hard drive, memory, OS install, or Pro Tools cards.
What in the name of the Apple Gods could be causing this issue?  Any ideas at all?

    Hi Chris,
Good info & work so far, but indeed strange, only thing I can think of is something to do with that little switch for the fan cover... near the bottom as I recall, but it may be some kind of short in it's circuit.

  • Will not boot up and fans run at high speed

will not boot up and fans run at high speed

after much head scratching I ran the hardware test disk from cd. The test showed a memory issue I eliminated the faulty one systematically. So it wasn't a hard drive or software problem in the end it was faulty memory. What was misleading was the computer telling me there was a fault on the hard drive. The machine works fine now. Thanks to people's comments I learned a bit more about the G5 that helped eliminate probable causes

  • Best graphics card for G4 MDD and still have 3d acceleration in OS 9?

My MDD (June 2003) has the standard 9000 Pro in it. I read in another topic on here where someone said if 3D acceleration in OS 9 is required then upgrade options are extremely limited. Just wondered if anyone knows the last best AGP card I can stick in this MDD that'll still provide 3D acceleration in OS 9.2.2, or am I stuck with the 9000 Pro?

    Hi-
The Radeon 9700 Pro was the top card to ever be offered for the MDD.
The OEM version is very rare, and usually expensive.
The equivalent PC version 9700 Pro, flashed to Mac ROM, is readily available ob eBay.
The 9700 Pro is pretty close in performance to the 9800 Pro, supports Core Image in OS X, and is a good upgrade beyond the 9000 Pro.
However, the driver support in OS 9 is still limited:

The Geforce4 Ti is another performance option for the MDD. If you read the following article carefully, you may find that a graphics card won't help as much in OS 9 as you think:

Serious gaming, with help from a powerful graphics card is in the realm of OS X.
For OS 9, most cards don't really get utilized as much as one may think.

  • Early 2008 MacBookPro keyboard backlight off and fans run at high speed

    Hi!
    I wrote from Turkey.
My Early 2008 MacBookPro 2.40 ghz 4 gb Ram OSX Mavericks machine's keyboard backlight off and fans run at high speed; it seems an exact smc resetting problem.
So i tried the 2 ways of SMC restting procedure; both battery you can move and not, but nothings changed on the situation..
On the way for removable battery; nothing changed but on the way for umremovable battery way; keyboard backlight flashes and gone, but fans are at high speed not changed. So nothing changed.
What can i do right now? i'll wait for your advices
    Thanks

Your Mac may need a new PRAM battery.  Once it is over 4 years old, that often is needed.

  • Satellite M70: accessing data of temperature and fan

While we hadn't such problems with other laptops, we didn't find a way of accessing the data of temperature and fan on a Satellite M70.
A friend tried this under Linux but didn't succeed and also with XP I don't find a way of reading the data (current temperature of CPU or state of fan-cooler).
Since I notice several irregularities while operating (fan is working though cpu-load is very minimal), working is sometimes going to be a bit uncomfortable.
    thanx for hints / gw

I dont know if it will help you but in this posting someone has managed to run a hardware monitoring application.

Possibly it will work on your notebook.
But in my knowledge Toshiba doesnt support such application and Im not sure it it will work.
Anyway, trying is for free ;)

  • G4 MDD and Wireless

So I'm completely new to MAC. I have here an old G4 MDD and I'd like to get a wireless card in there and use it for a movie machine.
What kind of card do I need?
Right now it has OS 10.3.9 - can/should I upgrade? I need to completely reformat this guy so I can admin and everything.
    Thanks

You need an AirPort card, or a PCI card or external component which supports at least one of the 802.11 protocols. If your computer has a FireWire 800 port, the AirPort slot is designed for an AirPort Extreme card instead.
