MDD Dual867MHz - Intermittent "freezes" under Leopard

Hello -
I have a problem I'm hoping to solicit some input on...
First - the setup:
- A Dual 867MHz MDD; 1.25GB RAM; running Leopard 10.5.6 - no additional applications/software installed beyond stock OS.
- 4 HDD - 1. 160GB ATA Primary drive (Western Digital); 2. 60GB ATA Secondary Drive (Seagate); 3. and 4. each is a 1TB SATA Western Digital - these drives are Mirrored together via Disk Utility and a connected to the system via a Sonnet Tempo 2 internal SATA port PCI card.
The rough problem description:
- The machine boots, sleeps, and runs fine... Except - I enable Remote Management and Personal File Share on the machine with the intention of having my other Macs access the HDDs of the MDD (for Time Machine, SuperDuper, general centralised storage of some media -- yes, I also have an alternate backup strategy of incremental backups for Mirrored 1TB to Amazon S3 if I can ever get the MDD itself stable).
- The connecting machines (i.e. source Macs) may be any combination of a 2.33GHz 15.4" MBP with 4GB RAM install (I know - 3 usable); a 2.16GHz 13.3" White MacBook with 2GB RAM installed; a 1.5GHz 12" PowerBook G4 with 1.25GB RAM installed -- All running Leopard 10.5.6.
- If I connect to screen and file sharing using the Admin account from one or more of the source Macs, perform various operations, disconnect, reconnect, etc, then after some completely variable amount of time, sharing connections start to fail, and the G4 slowly goes insane and freezes (no panics, just a slow degrade to the Ball of Death).
- I then have to hard reset the MDD, which typically leads to a whack of permissions problems that I need to repair (stuck a blue screen on boot; stuck at grey Apple-logo-screen at boot are the most common).
The MDD is presently not headless, though that is my ultimate goal. It has a 15" ADC LCD connected.
I'm wondering if the community is aware of any instability with Leopard's Personal File Sharing and Remote Management together on G4s?
I've tried the same configuration with Tiger (10.4.11), and don't see the same instability.
Any thoughts from the gurus? Or am I destined for Tiger on the MDD and using the questionable "defaults write com.apple.systempreferences TMShowUnsupportedNetworkVolumes 1" to get Time Machine on the source Macs to recognise the Mirrored 1TB on the MDD?
Many thanks in advance!

My machine has similar problems. I have an MDD same model. I actually have the intermittent freezes plus boot up takes anywhere from 5 to 20 min. I checked and everything looks fine, hardware tests, different drives, different drive buses. And same issues. I was trying to run Leopard server on it, then i tried leopard client, same issues. I'm back on tiger server, and it works great. I keep thinking it's a device issue maybe it doesn't like the built in ATA controller (even thought that wouldn't make any sense since it should be a supported machine). So I thought about possibly putting in a third party drive controller maybe SATA (However if the poster below has similar issues than that may rule that out of the question). I'm a little confused. This is a supported machine! Why would i have problems. I even used different install discs, didn't matter. I went through 6 installs of Leopard, (3 server, 3 client) and all the same results. So for now i'm still on Tiger Server...

  • Intermittent freezes upon cold boot

    Greetings gurus,
I've been experiencing intermittent freezes on cold boot since a few weeks. I did not have them on 10.5.4. I've only had 4 freezes and according to the CrashReporter log all are identical, as far as I can tell. I have not installed any new hardware and I have only one external thing connected and that's a Sennheiser USB headset. I'm unable to tell if all leave identical messages in other logs however.
The *CrashReporter log* for the four occasions says that the process which broke is *coreservicesd [43]*. On each occasion, it is said that "Thread 0" crashed. This is how the beginning of that log reads (from the crash earlier today):
    *Process: coreservicesd [43]*
    *Path: /System/Library/CoreServices/coreservicesd*
    *Identifier: coreservicesd*
    *Version: ??? (???)*
    *Code Type: X86 (Native)*
    *Parent Process: launchd [1]*
    *Date/Time: 2009-01-19 20:33:26.618 +0100*
    *OS Version: Mac OS X 10.5.5 (9F33)*
    *Report Version: 6*
    *Exception Type: EXCBADACCESS (SIGBUS)*
    *Exception Codes: KERNPROTECTIONFAILURE at 0x0000000000000000*
    *Crashed Thread: 0*
    The symptoms are:
+ *Menu bar* is invisible (can make out language flag, airport and bluetooth icons and bottom of menu bar).
+ Finder is unresponsive (can't open folders on the desktop and their icons are gone but not their names - relaunching the Finder does not help).
+ Applications won't launch from the Dock.
+ I can access the Restart, Sleep, Shutdown dialog box by pressing the off button on my ACD, but the Shutdown button doesn't work.
+ Holding the power button will not always force shutdown, but seems to put the computer in some sort of sleep mode (when pressing the button again the desktop will appear "greyed" out and a white progress bar will display).
As it doesn't happen upon every cold boot I haven't been able to use the Verbose mode. I have done the following:
+ Trashed the plists of Finder and Dock
    + Fixed permissions in DU
+ Left it unplugged from the mains for a whole day
    + Reset PRAM/NVRAM
+ Using Onyx, deleted the caches under Cleaning - System and Cleaning - User (radical perhaps?)
+ Turned off all login items (AppTrap, Gmail Notifr, Fuzzy Clock, Skype)
+ Run Apple Hardware Test, normal and extended, with no errors found
+ Verified boot disk in DU while booted from the installation disk: no errors
I tried a Safe Boot but it froze. However, it does not freeze every time.
When it froze this evening, I found loads of the following message in Console-All Messages:
*WindowServer[51] LaunchServices/5123589: coreservicesd is running an unsupported version, 0 ( we are 10500000 ), so we cannot talk to it.*
Many of them are prefaced by loginwindow[23] instead of WindowsServer.
Below are the messages in Console-Console messages from the latest time that it froze (all of the messages). There's some talk about com.apple.UserEventAgent-Aqua which I don't understand.
When it says that a "thread" crashes, could it be hardware-related (i.e. the processors)? But should not AHT have caught that? Or is it some corruption in the system? I have backups and clones so I'm not worried about losing data. I'm more concerned about the hardware.
Any thoughts and ideas would be helpful.

Actually, doing the following would probably fix everything; at least it has fixed every issue I have ever had.
If Disk Utility can't fix it, you'll need a more robust utility for the repair. I would recommend DiskWarrior. It is the best at directory repairs. It rebuilds then actually replaces your old directory. I feel every Mac owner should have a copy. Make sure you get the disk so you can boot up on it to run repairs. You can also install it on another drive and run it from there to repair this one. DW works faster that way.
I use DW once a month to try and catch errors in my system from getting too far out of hand.
If you have a good backup, hopefully a clone of your system before you had issues, an Erase and Install may also rid you of this issue. But, beware! You will lose everything on the drive with this procedure. Let us know if you need help with that!
     Luck! DALE
p.s. by Thomas Bryant '''' from a previous post.
Diskwarrior is a "must have" utility and it's corrected any weird problem I've ever encountered. Anytime I have to do a forced shutdown etc. I run DW to get the directories back in tip top shape. Directory problems cause strange issues and often over the course of several weeks or months the little problems add up to finally a major problem. Tom

  • Using Encore 3 Under Leopard 10.5.4

I have recently purchased the Adobe Production Premium package and successfully prepared several Blu-ray and standard definition DVD's using Encore 3. However, whenever I attempt to output any of these DVD's to Flash Video by selecting Build>Output to Flash from within Encore 3, my menus transcode, but when Encore gets to my timeline video, the progress bar goes to about 20% almost instantly and remains there forever. I have tried several different types of video files including short Quicktime movies created in Final Cut Pro as well as other formats in the Encore 3 timeline. The result is always as given above. When this happens, I finally have to Force Quit Encore 3 because selecting cancel on the transcode give me an endlessly spinning beach ball.
I am running Encore 3 (latest updates installed) on an 8-core Mac Pro (Early 2008 model) with 12 GB of RAM and under Leopard 10.5.4 (latest version with all updates installed). I have successfully transcoded these timelines that seem to freeze Encore 3 using MPEG SlipStream so I know the files are OK.
Is anyone else having this problem? Is there any solution to the problem? Does output to Flash simply not work under Leopard?
I have posted this problem on both the Adobe Encore User Forum and written to Adobe Tech Support. I have received no response from Adobe.
Thank you in advance for responding.
    Tom

Since no one replied, I can now confirm that the failure of Adobe Encore CS3 to successfully build a DVD to Flash Video is a known problem which has been confirmed by Adobe Technical Support. The feature works perfectly under Windows XP or Vista and it did work in Leopard on an earlier version of Quicktime, specifically Quicktime. specifically Quicktime 7.3.1. However, under the latest version of Quicktime (7.5), the Build to Flash Video feature in Encore CS3 has been broken. I have provided detailed feedback to Apple on this issue. One can only hope that in a future release of Quicktime, the problem will be corrected.

  • Outputting a DVD To Flash Video in Encore 3 Under Leopard

This topic is indirectly related to Final Cut Pro 6 (since it is the source of my Quicktime movies in Encore 3) and I post it here because I have had no luck getting any responses on other forums including the Creative Cow and Adobe forums.

I have written to Adobe Tech Support. I have received no response from Adobe. I feel that someone on this forum must be using Encore 3 (since it is one of the few ways of getting Blu-ray DVD authoring on the Mac) and has tried to output the DVD as Flash video from within Encore 3. I am simply trying to determine (1) if this is a known issue when running Encore 3 under Leopard; (2) if there is any fix to get Output to Flash working from within Encore 3.
Thank you in advance for responding.

    David,
My hat is off to you for persevering with Encore 3 and getting it to output flash video. AFter reading that you had gotten it to work, I was inspired to try once again. This time I encoded my timeline to DVCPro HD by exporting the FCP project to Compressor. I then took this timeline (an 11 minute video) into Encore 3 and tried to build a flash DVD. I have a main menu and scene selection menu, and they both transcoded fine in about 20 minutes, but once again when Encore got to my timeline, the progress bar moved to about 1-2% and simply stayed there. After 7 hours I finally gave up and canceled the transcode which had never progressed any further and did a Force Quit on Encore.
I noticed in doing the above, that during the transcode of the menus Activity Monitor shows my cpu is reading 170-190 and varying as you would expect. Once Encore hits my timeline and begins the transcode of that, the cpu drops to 100 and remains there with no real sign of activity.
Can you tell me if your DVD that you successfully output to flash with Encore 3 had chapter marks in it? I am wondering if they could be the trouble. Some people have indicated that they solved the problem by going back to an earlier version of Quicktime. I am using version 7.5 of Quicktime, which is the latest version. Can you tell me what version of Quicktime you are using on the Mac that succeeded in outputting to Flash video using Encore 3?
    Thanks again for your help.

  • Permission Repair takes AGES under Leopard

I have noticed that under Leopard permission repair can take over 20 minutes to complete. On the same machine using Tiger it was only a matter of 2 minutes (at most). Does anyone have an explanation, fix or idea that might point me in the right direction? It's not as if the machine that I'm using is underpowered and the problem doesn't appear to be connected with the size of the machine anyway; my MacBook Pro takes less time (about 4 minutes) than my 3.0 GHz Xeon Quad for permission repair of the system disk.....
    Thanks for your help!

Repairing permissions w/Leopard takes anywhere from 10-40 minutes, depending on what's installed and what's contained in /Library/Receipts/bom/. The repair permissions operation has changed in Leopard. The stalled progress bar is an unresolved bug (they haven't figured out how to make it work whilst it's checking or rebuilding the a.receiptdb, in /Library/Receipts/db/. To see what's really going on, open that folder in a Finder window, select list view, launch Disk Utility, select your boot volume, and click on repair permissions. Watch the Finder window flash files that are being read and checked against the current a.receiptdb file. That's what's taking all the time and freezing the progress bar. Once that's finished, the progress bar starts moving and the permissions are being checked and repaired. Also note, that you won't get any *they were repaired* message back for any that are noted to be incorrect.
Want more information? Then, search these forums for *repairing permissions* or permissions.

  • Mouse Freezes on Leopard !!

Anyone else experiencing intermittent mouse freezes on Leopard ?
Every now and again my mouse refuses to move and then suddenly starts working again. Typically freezes for 2 - 10 seconds but I have not figured out whether its anything I do to make it work or whether its just completely random..
This is starting to suck !
So far my list of show stoppers is as follows:
    1. Intermittent Mouse freezes
    2. Address Book no longer supports SMS to mobile even though it is an advertised feature of my MacBook
    3. Address Book no longer has Backup/Restore menu option.
    4. Java Developer Kit 1.6 no longer supported or available

+1. No problems here, either with an Apple O.E.M. mouse or Kensington trackball. What kind of Mouse do you use?+
    Just the MacBook trackpad.
+2. SMS is supported in iChat, not Address Book+
Mmm I can't find this feature in iChat, does it automatically used mobile phone details from Address Book ?
+3. Address Book supports backups & restores through the "Import" & "Export" menu items in the "File" menu.+
Thanks - found that and they have change the naming on the backup file to be YYYY-MM-DD so it now sorts them properly - well done for this fix!
+4. Can't help with the Java issue other than noting that Sun seems to be morphing Java 6 into something with a lot of built-in support for a lot of Windows-only technologies, making the claim of "platform independence" concept a bit hard to accept at face value.+
A bit of show stopper for me so its back to Tiger I go...

  • Intermittent Freezes after Bootcamp 2.1 upgrade

Approximately every 10 to 15 minutes, I get a 15-20 second "freeze". That is the best way I can explain it. All computer functions stop completely, even the mouse movement. Placing my ear onto the device, it sounds different while this is happening. Everything appears to work fine before and after the freeze.
This only happened after installing the latest bootcamp update. I also have the problem described in this post:
    http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=1514424&tstart=0
What is the bootcamp taskbar program called and must I have that running all the time?

Firebird74, that thread doesn't apply to my situation exactly. I'm running Win XP under Boot Camp, not Vista, and my intermittent freeze happens consistently whether I am plugged in or on battery power.
Through reading several Apple Boot Camp discussion posts, I determined that I can fix the problem manually by force quitting KbdMgr.exe from task manager after each reboot, but this is rather annoying and I'm not even sure what KbdMgr.exe does, since it doesn't appear to affect anything at all without it running.
I'm using Input Remapper also, which shows up in my Task Bar, however I do not have any Boot Camp icon in the taskbar. I was wondering whether KbdMgr.exe is conflicting with Input Remapper.
I tried the Intel Chipset driver download from another seemingly related post, but it said my hardware wasn't new enough and quit.

  • Problems with ViaVoice under Leopard, especially key mapping problems

ViaVoice's behavior has changed considerably under Leopard. First I will discuss the key mapping problem, since I'm eagerly looking for an answer to this problem. At the end of this post, I will voice some of the other problems I've experienced for those who may be interested. The key mapping problem may be specific to the fact that I use a foreign keyboard with a US version of ViaVoice.
    INTRO:
I have used ViaVoice on my Mac for years, more or less without problems (ViaVoice's bugginess is notorious).
Those who know ViaVoice will know that one has two general options for dictation. One can dictate into ViaVoice's so-called SpeakPad, which allows special formatting, editing and dictation error correction within the dictated text, or one can dictate into "external" software such as Microsoft Word, in which case ViaVoice just sends a string of characters to that software. SpeakPad appears to make strong use of the operating system's built-in functionality for character formatting, document formatting, etc.
    *MY PROBLEM*
I have a German keyboard on my PowerBook, yet dictate in US English. When I dictated into SpeakPad under Tiger, all characters appeared correctly. However, when I dictated into Microsoft Word using Tiger, I had to switch the keyboard mapping from German to US to get all characters (that means including the characters that are located at different positions on a German keyboard than they are on a US keyboard such as y, z, apostrophes and parentheses) to appear correctly.
Under Leopard, things have changed. Now it doesn't matter whether I dictate into SpeakPad or Word; the results are the same and many characters do not appear correctly.
If set to a German keyboard, y and z appear as expected. To name a few irregularities:
    "(" appears as ")"
    ")" appears as "="
    apostrophes appear as "#" and
    ";" appears as ","
If set to a US keyboard, y and z are interchanged. "(" and ")" appear as expected. Apostrophes appear as "\" and ";" appears as ","
By comparison, if typed (as opposed to dictated, as in the examples above) "correctly" (i.e. based on the letters printed on the keyboard) on a German keyboard set to imitate a US keyboard:
    y and z are interchanged
    apostrophes appear as "|"
    "(" appears as "*"
    ")" appears as "(" and
";" appears as the symbol for "less than"
Since I don't have a US keyboard, I can't say how it would behave if set to imitate a German keyboard, i.e. if there's a correlation to the results I get when I dictate.
Since I was previously able to dictate correctly into SpeakPad by setting the keyboard to "German" and into Word by setting the keyboard to "US," I presume that this is a problem in Leopard, not ViaVoice.
*OTHER PROBLEMS WITH VIAVOICE UNDER LEOPARD*
In addition to the aforementioned key mapping problems (that may be specific to those of us with foreign keyboards), ViaVoice appears to have lost considerable functionality in Leopard. I cannot access SpeakPad's Preferences and the correction window. Moreover, the traffic-light like window buttons have disappeared from the VoiceCenter (although they work if you click where they should be). SetupAssistent appears to function.
I've written to Nuance about these problems, but have little hope that they will invest the time in producing a patch since they haven't released any updates since 2003.

    Thrums1,
I've never had to "register" ViaVoice after updating the system. I thus suspect you haven't fully followed my above, three-step advice (particularly step 3).
    1) Reinstall ViaVoice from CD.
    2) Update to the latest version (using the patch downloadable from Nuance's website).
    3) Replace the “temp” and “users” folders (in the "ViaVoice" folder at the upper level of your home directory) by a previous copy thereof. When I say previous copy, I mean a copy from when ViaVoice was still working properly, e.g. a copy from when it was running under Tiger.
As I said, I've gotten ViaVoice to survive several system updates by following the above steps. To my knowledge, the last step is critical since it saves you from having to reconfigure ViaVoice under the new operating system (in this case Leopard). I suspect that ViaVoice is crashing on your system because it's trying to start some module of the SetUpAssistant that is incompatible with Leopard (as many are). If you instead use old copies of the "temp" and "users" folders (from the previous system), then ViaVoice doesn't have to go through the initial "registration" process; ViaVoice doesn't need the SetUpAssistant; and all is (more or less) fine.
    Good luck!
BTW, to my knowledge, Dictate only runs on Intel Macs. It thus won't run on a G4 iBook, just as it won't run on my PowerBook G4.

  • Workaround to import video in FCP 6.0.5 under Leopard

On behalf of a FCP user under Leopard with FCP 6.0.5 I would like to ask you how to import video from a Panasonic camcorder using some strange format. The workaround now is to import it on another machine under Snow Leopard with iMovie, export it as one .mov 'for computer use' and import it in FCP 6.0.5 on the Leopard machine. The video from the camcorder does not play under Leopard, probably because of the QT version 7.6.6.
The Panasonic camcorder has an SD card with video which is recognised as a Camera Archive. It has folders with a name like PRG001 containing files like MOV001.MOD and MOV001.MOI and PRG001.PGI.
Possibly there is some plugin, extention or other workaround?
It is currently too expensive to upgrade FCP 6.0.5 to the latest version, although the 2006 MacBook Pro with Intel might be able to run it. I was advised not to upgrade to Snow Leopard without upgrading FCP, because it will cause all kinds of trouble.

Although I would still need to buy the "QuickTime MPEG-2 Playback Component for Mac OS X" to work with it, right? At least that is what MPEG Streamclip suggests when I try to open the MOVxxx.MOD files with it.

  • Unable to save HP printer presets under Leopard

I frequently print a colored first page from the manual paper tray and the rest of the document from another tray. Presets previously saved, work flawlessly under Tiger. I am not able to save presets under Leopard - all attempts revert to default settings. Maddening because we do numerous different print jobs - some requiring staples and collating, some with a color first page, some a mix of both. One of a kind -- no problem -- print 50 and you have to set the preset for each copy. AARG!! Solution -- unacceptable!! Boot under Tiger.

This is a known problem and will most likely require an update form Apple:

  • CUPS printing to remote server doesn't work under Leopard

So i have an ubuntu system running cups 1.2.8 as a print server. i have an epson stylus colour 760 plugged in and configured and working.
i also had a macmini running tiger printing to it fine via ipp. now it didn't occur to me that something as simple (and important) as printing would be severely broken under Leopard. basically, after the upgrade, i can't print at all to the remote cups server.
the symptoms are that the job queue will pause; even after clicking on 'resume', it will start the progress bar, and then after 100%, it will just pause again.

  • MacPro3,1/10.8.2 intermittent freezes multiple times a day

For the last two weeks my MacPro 3,1 has been experiencing three to five intermittent freezes per day. The last couple of days I have experienced nearly one an hour.
I have not been able to peg it to any specific system update, application or hardware issue. There are no kernel panics in relation to this issue. This MacPro originally started with a fresh install of 10.6.x, and has been a stable system through all OS updates, up to and including 10.8.2.
The freezes have occurred with various programs running: (only) Finder, various elements of CS6, iTunes, Mail, Terminal, Activity Monitor, etc. iTunes will continue to play music. Activity Monitor will update statistics in graphs for a limited time, while the process monitor responds for a longer time. After a freeze I have mouse control and can click between on-screen windows and applications. The menu is non-responsive. I will occasionally get the beach ball of death. The only recovery is a hard power down and reboot.
In attempting to diagnose the problem, I have experienced similar freezes with a fresh install of 10.8.x with no 3rd-party software on a temporary partition. This led me to believe I had a hardware problem. I pulled and reseated all RAM, the four hard drives and SSD, the video cards. I ran SoftRAID's non-destructive verify on all four of the Samsung HDs, which then predicted a potential problem based on one of the drive's SMART data. I then backed up the data located on the RAID and did a three-pass certify-level test on the suspect HD with SoftRAID, which cleared the drive of errors.
Any ideas are greatly welcome. I have included the system information and one system log from this evening while attempting to copy files from an external drive to the RAID.
    Thanks much!
    Tom

Ah, the "20 Questions" - mention m4 and would have said to check you have the latest firmware. Common enough that after way too long lengthy threads to get to the bottom.
Even Zero all does not rule out bad sectors all the time, but it does insure the headers are good when you format a drive or setup an array. I thought the latest SoftRAID 4.x scanned in the background during idle time AND it reports disk I/O retries (bad is a bad work, 'weak sectors' is probably more accurate: is 5 retries bad or is 10?). Is not a 100% black/white issue.
Firmware is hardware and heck, OWCs own SSD controller is throwing out a bunch of corruption issues too.
iTunes use to be good at detecting weak/bad RAM. AHT isn't. Memtest may not (especially with ECC) and DIMMs also have firmware, SPD code and variations.
SSDs though with the constant improvements and change have been popular issue. In May-June a bug in the latest SandForce controller firmware that took a long while to get to the bottom.
Odd that Crucial doesn't say more or the comments section on Newegg and Amazon don't have more?

  • IPhoto 7.1.1 Under Leopard 10.5.1 Will not print photo under "save as PDF"

    iPhoto 7.1.1 Under Leopard 10.5.1.
Select a photo, choose "print" icon at bottom of iPhoto window.
    Choose "print".
    Choose "Save as PDF".
Result: Unknown error message appears with white space (no text) in message box, but with "OK" button.
    Hit "OK button".
RESULT: iPhoto prints a screen shot of the iPhoto window and renders it to a PDF file.
In other words, *the print function under iPhoto does not work*. It yields an error every time that does not have a message, then *instead of printing the selected photo, takes a PDF screen shot of the iPhoto window*.
This is an example of poor programming. And of course, there is no way to fix it, or to get help.
Is anyone else having this problem?

This is an example of poor programming.
How do you come to this conclusion. It's working fine for me. You're the first to report such an issue.
First repair disk permissions with Disk Utility and delete the iPhoto preference file, com.apple.iPhoto.plist, that resides in your User/Library/Preferences folder. A corrupted pref file can cause all sorts of unusual performance problems. If that doesn't help, log into another account and try from there. If it still doesn't work a reinstall of iPhoto seems warranted. To reinstall iPhoto you'll have to delete the current application and all files with "iPhoto" in the file name that reside in the HD/Library/Receipts folder.
    It iPhoto performs correctly in the other account then your primary account is the culprit and may be a preference file other than iPhoto's that's at fault. To determine if that's the case try the following;
    Trouble Shooting Preferences
Go to HD/Users/Your_name/Library. Move the Preferences folder (in its entirety) to the Desktop and make a second copy of it so you have Copy A and B. Now try the the process again and determine if problem is fixed.
If the problem IS fixed, then go to the new Prefs folder that the OS will have created and open it up.
Open Copy B on the Desktop and select all of the items inside. Drag them into the open new library folder. When the Copy window comes up check the Apply to All check box and then click on the Don't Replace button as seen here. That will keep the new files created and bring back all of the others.
If the problem is NOT fixed, trash the new Prefs folder and move the intact Copy A folder back to the Library folder .
TIP: For insurance against the iPhoto database corruption that many users have experienced I recommend making a backup copy of the Library6.iPhoto database file and keep it current. If problems crop up where iPhoto suddenly can't see any photos or thinks there are no photos in the library, replacing the working Library6.iPhoto file with the backup will often get the library back. By keeping it current I mean backup after each import and/or any serious editing or work on books, slideshows, calendars, cards, etc. That insures that if a problem pops up and you do need to replace the database file, you'll retain all those efforts. It doesn't take long to make the backup and it's good insurance.
I've created an Automator workflow application (requires Tiger), iPhoto dB File Backup, that will copy the selected Library6.iPhoto file from your iPhoto Library folder to the Pictures folder, replacing any previous version of it. It's compatible with iPhoto 08 libraries and Leopard. iPhoto does not have to be closed to run the application, just idle. You can download it at Toad's Cellar. Be sure to read the Read Me pdf file.

  • HEAT = Intermittent freezing or complete crash requiring a hard reboot

I have a stock Macbook Air 1.6ghz with the hard drive and I'm on my second machine. Both have done the same thing leading me to believe there is a serious defect in the Macbook Air. What happens is that after about a half hour of using the machine and running it with some apps like Parallels, video, whatever, it will get really hot. Especially in the upper left region of the computer. It feels hot to the point that you can't really hold on to it as it's too uncomfortable.
iStat claims the case temperature is: 108 degrees fahrenheit. This is prior to it getting really slow and crashing, since I can't really get to iStat when that happens anyway. The whole process of the Macbook Air getting to this point seems to correlate with using the disk and pushing the CPU. What always seems to be true is that the upper left region of the base of the computer is really hot.
The intermittent freezing is quite annoying as the trackpad will completely become non-responsive and you can't type or do anything. Although if a USB mouse is plugged in you can move that and it will move the mouse cursor on the screen, but clicking or doing anything doesn't work. One time we were in a video chat through iChat and it worked fine for about 20 minutes or so and then suddenly started doing the intermittent freezing. The video and audio would freeze, then it would suddenly come back and play the missed portion in fast forward or just skip it altogether.
So my question is how do we get this fixed, I love my Macbook Air, but being able to actually use it is even more important. The minute I try to do anything more compute intensive it just seems to seize up and die. From my experience and reading about other peoples experiences this appears to be a fundamental defect in the Macbook Air. I would like to actually get some support for this instead of the usual we don't know anything about it and blah, blah. Hopefully Apple will just own up to it and work to quickly fix it.

Yes I've considered what I do on the machine, and no it doesn't matter what I'm doing specifically. What does seem to matter is whether what I'm doing is taxing the machine. If I'm compiling software, running a video, running Parallels with Windows, copying large files, etc. then it will cause the machine to heat up and then start failing. I don't have to do very many things at the same time either, if I watch a video on it and compile some software it will heat it up and cause it to start failing. It seems to be a combination of using the processor and hard drive to where it can't handle things.
Right now for example I'm doing a Macports port install of Apache 2 and then typing this message into Safari. That's it. The machine is right now at 113 degrees F according to iStat. That seems to be the magic temperature where at that level and up it starts failing. It's hot enough that touching it is too uncomfortable. It's sitting on a Targus cool pad, clear open access for the vents below. It's simply not designed properly to handle doing anything that pushes the hardware, in my opinion and from my experience with it. I do really like the form factor though so I wish it did work properly. I'm writing about my experiences with it so hopefully Apple will pick up on what users are experiencing and fix the design of the machine. Clearly it has design issues.
The other thing that bothers me about the Macbook Air is that everyone acts like the users are somehow causing the problem. Things like oh you are blocking the fans and putting it on your lap, or you set it on something that causes it to heat up, or it's the software you are using. Well I've got news for you, these things should work in those environments, it shouldn't be a problem to put the thing on my lap, if I wanted a computer that I could only put on a table or something similar I would have just stuck with my Macbook Pro or bought an iMac. This thing is built to carry around and throw on your lap to get stuff done. At least that's why I wanted it.
I guess for now I'll just have to use it for only 20 - 30 minutes at a time and give it breaks to cool down, ugh!

  • Lexmark Optra S 1250 - Working under Leopard

I wanted to let people know that the Lexmark Optra S 1250 printer can work under leopard (10.5.1). It was quite a (stressful) experience getting it working but here were the essential steps:
    1. After installing 10.5.1, reinstall the latest Optra S printer driver.
    2. Ensure the printer is connected and powered on - mine is connected using a USB to Parallel converter cable but could also use an Ethernet cable
    3. In the 'Printer & Fax Preference pane click the "+" to add a new printer.
    4. Let the search for the printer driver complete(by gosh it is extremely slow!)
    5. Click "Add" and when the drop-down box starts looking for 'printer options', don't wait (it never completes) but click the "Configure" button. Select your options and then exit.
    6. Hopefully the printer now shows up as added on the left side of the Preference pane.
    7. Close and then Restart the computer. I couldn't get the printer to respond to print commands (drove me crazy!) until after I decided to shut down and restart the computer.
    8. If you still have problems, you may need to go back to the Printer & Fax Preference Pane, control-click on the printer icon in the left side of the pane and select "Reset print system". After that, redo steps 1 to 7.
    Good luck
    Rudy

    Explain #8.
Did you restart after adding the drivers?
If you open the System Profiler, under Firewire or Printers what do yo see?
    (Apple Menu/About this Mac/More Info/Firewire or Printer)
If it sees them then you know it's a configuration problem.
