MDD freezes when transferring files to new Hard Drive.

I am using a G4 MDD Dual Processor Tower with 1 GB DDR SDRAM, Dual 1 GHz and an 80 GB hard Drive on an ATA/100 controller, using a cable select cable (OEM). I just installed an additional PATA Western Digital WES-WD3200JB 320 GB hard drive. Both drives are on the ATA/100 and on Cable Select mode. The 80GB hard drive (which has the system installed on it) was originally installed in the slave position (and still is). I zeroed the drive and did a PRAM reset before I partitioned and formatted the drive.
I have had freeze up troubles when I try to transfer files from the old 80GB Hard Drive to this new 320 GB one. I have tried transferring files from a DVD to this new Hard Drive without a problem. I have tried transferring that same load of files from the new Hard Drive to the old one without a problem. The only time it seems to freeze up is when I try to transfer a large number of files from the old Hard Drive to the new one. The problem doesn’t occur with large files, just with a large number of files. For example, I have transferred a single 917MB file without a problem, but when I try to transfer a folder that has 158 items totaling 38.6 MB, that is when my computer freezes up. However, I have frequently transferred folders containing a few (under 20) files that are under 5 MB without a problem.
I have considered putting the new drive on the ATA-66 controller instead of the ATA-100 (as several Apple forum posts recommend), but I would rather figure out why the freeze up occurs in only this specific set of circumstances.
Any theories on what is causing this freeze up, or suggestions on how to fix it would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

ATA doesn't share a bus very nicely, you can always put the WD 320 over to ATA/100 or do that now, but yes, isolate them.
You may have directory problem or bad sectors, so eliminating that would be another step.
Some people even recommend zeroing a new drive right off the bat.
PATA should not have the problems of SATA, but you might want to look into whether this drive has come up in other problems. OWC includes it in one of the FW cases also.
And you could move your OEM to FW case, can't imagine continuing to use the OEM drive at this point (they were slow and had only 2MB cache then, I use mine for an emergency FW backup system).

• Screen sometimes freezes when transferring to/from external hard drive

I have a brand-new macbook pro 15" (standard settings). Ever since I've taken it out of the box it's been having this intermittent problem where the screen freezes. The first time it happened was when I was migrating my files from my time machine backup. I didn't make much of it then but it has kept happening for the last 3 weeks or so since I got the computer.
When it happens I can still move the cursor around the screen but nothing responds. I can't close or quit anything, or even force quit. The only thing that works is to restart the computer using the power button. This has led to me losing work on more than one occasion (VERY frustrating). I've tried leaving it for a while to see if it eventually 'wakes up'. It doesn't. I've checked the hard drive and other hardware and haven't found any errors. I've installed all software updates.
All I've figured out is that this seems to happen when I'm transferring large amounts of data to or from an external hard drive. It happens with several different drives, which work fine on other computers, so it's not just the case of one malfunctioning external hard drive. It doesn't happen consistently either - sometimes transferring the same info later on works fine.
Has anyone had similar problems and/or (even better) found a solution? I'm planning to ring apple support once they're open and will update this if I find out anything else.

Tia,
Songs transfer to the iPod form iTunes. iTunes can obtain the song files from any location: main HD, secondary HD, ExHD.
You need to get the song files on the ExHD recognized by iTunes. Then you just need to sync the iPod to iTunes.
This is the high-level explanation. If you need more info, read the links below and/or post back.

• My IMac shuts down when transfering files to a Hard Drive through USB

Hi all,
I have been having trouble with my IMac. It's over 3 years old and I didn't actualized the operative system. Everytime I try to transfer files from the computer to a hard drive or pen drive (through USB), the computer shuts down. Sometimes it restarts, sometimes it gets shut. I wonder what's the issue and if getting a newer operate system (Snow Leopard maybe) will help.
Thanks

my 5th generation ipod won't sync anymore to my PowerMac G4. It worked fine, but when I installed a new hard drive it won't work anymore. I've re-installed iTunes, the latest version for Tiger, I've reset and restored my iPod. The ipod shows up fine in the source banner and I can transfer files to it, however when I unplug the iPod the files are not there.

Maybe try to repair the iPod's HD using Disk Utility located in the Applications -> Utilities folder. If that doesn't help, try a low level reformat of the drive using the same application. Make sure you choose Mac OS X Extended (Journaled) as the file system format.

• Computer freezes when transferring files

Aside from a whole host of other problems I am having with Lion (on a new drive with a complete clean install--twice!!) I seem to be having a very serious one where whenever I try and transfer a file (USB drive, external drive, mounted web drive) the computer become inoperable during the transfer. While the computer doesn't completely freeze up, it is impossible to do any work as clicking on a window may take 4 - 7 minutes for it to respond to that click.
I sort of feel that this problem is probably what is causing all my others. The computer becomes totally unresponsive and I often have to wait 30 - 50 seconds for it to catch up on what I'm doing. It is as if it cannot manage multiple tasks. Thinking that this was due to my User Account, I logged into a guest account and pretty much had the exact same experience, especially when transferring files.
Doe anyone have an idea as to what I can do to fix this?

They are usually video files, ranging from 700mb to the very rare 2GB. Sometimes it's 4-5 of them at a time.

• ITunes won't let me move files to new hard drive

Hey, all...I'm having a really major problem with my computer. I'm trying to move my iTunes library to a new hard drive. Currently, it's in a 1-terabyte Western Digital USB drive powered through the USB, and I'm trying to move it to a Seagate 1-terabyte drive. I currently have 535 gigabytes of media in my library and I have a MacBook with a 250-GB hard drive that I don't store any music on currently.
I move the library file over to the new USB hard drive, and I consolidate my library as it asks me to do. Then, when I go down to "Organize library", it prepares to copy the files to the new disk, then gives me the big red stop sign and tells me "The disk cannot be read from or written to." and that's that. The files work fine when I try to play them, so they're there, and presumably, not irretrievably damaged. They're just impossible to move.

A reply to an old problem, but I couldn't find this solution anywhere. I had the same problem when I moved my iTunes library to an external drive. As Apple recommends, I used File > Library > Organize Library > Consolidate Files to copy my music files from my overstuffed hard drive to the external drive. Copying went fine for a while, adding about two-thirds of my files to the new drive without incident. Then I got the big stop sign with the error message: "Copying files failed. The disk could not be read from or written to."
This turned out to have nothing to do with either the hard drive or the external disk. I had a bad file in my music library that was shutting down the consolidation process. Unfortunately the error message says nothing about which file may be the culprit. All I could think to do was to go back to my original library in iTunes and sort by Artist, select all cuts with artists beginning with A, right click and select "Consolidate Files". Then do the same with B artists, etc. Proceeding this way, files resumed copying but when I got to the "S" selections, the consolidate process failed again. Then I selected smaller and smaller batches until the problem file was identified. Removed it from my library and then Consolidate worked fine through the rest of the library. Problem solved.
I spent several days working through this; hope I can save someone else the time.

• Transferring files from portable hard drives

I currently have an external hard drive formatted for a PC. I recently bought a Mac and an external hard drive that is formatted specifically for a Mac. I want to transfer the files from the PC external hard drive to the one formatted for Mac but when I hook the Mac hard drive to my PC it won't acknowledge it without me reformatting it for a PC. Is there a way for me to get the files from one hard drive to the next without reformatting the hard drives themselves?

I have a similar problem... my external hard drive, PC formated, is one that can be connected and media viewed through your TV. I want to keep all my "pc" files on the hard drive and add MAC (.avi, .mp3, .mp4, etc.) files to the hard drive to free up space on my laptop.
As you said, I can read/copy files from the hard drive to my MAC but cannot copy from my MAC to the hard drive. Will the software you speak of allow me to copy those files? If not, must I burn all from my files to a disc, reformat the hard drive, and then copy back?

• MS-7519 freezes when transferring files

Hi,
can anyone help me with this problem ???
Whenever i try to transfer or copy files within the same drive or partition or from USB drive, the computer freezes randomly and I need to do a hard restart.
I have a clean install of windows and this happens in safe mode too, especially if the files are larger.
Sometimes the transfer is almost done and the PC freezes almost at the end of the transfer, but sometimes it freezes in the beginning.
And after it freezes when I restart and try transferring again, it freezes quicker ( in the first 3-4% of the transfer )
I have done tests for CPU, RAM, HDD, GRAPHIC CARD, PSU, and all of them are passed.
I have also taken out the HDD and tried to copy files on another PC and there it goes OK.
Is something adjusted wrong in the BIOS or maybe I need to update the BIOS ???
Have somebody had the same problem or if you have any suggestions ???
Thanks in advance.

• How do I get my iTunes transfered to a new hard drive?

I used iTunes on my C drive and stored the music on an external hard drive. My C drive crashed, but I am able to access all of the data. I also had iTunes on another computer I use and will now be my main computer. This "new" computer had its own music, a few of my favorite CD's, but I never synched an iPod to this system. I can still access the external drive that had the music. The only thing missing is the last album I downloaded from Amazon. (That music lives on the old C drive that crashed but is still accessible)
I want to 1) consolidate the music from these two sources on the external drive; 2) have the new iTunes recognize the place where the music is 3) get my playlists back; 3) get everything in one place for my system to backup; 4) entertain any other suggestions regarding my iTunes setup and how best to avert this situation in the future.
I have about 40G of music, pictures, and music videos. I don't want to leave any of the pieces out of my next iPod synch.

Open itunes by pressing *and holding* the shift key. Choose the ITL from the old hard drive when prompted.
Consolidate the library from the old hard drive onto the new PC. Make sure the copy files option is turned on in itunes preferences, so they get copied to the new PC. I assume you want that.
Then get that updated ITL file from the old PC and put it on your new PC. DO the shift-start for iTunes again, but pick the ITL file on your new PC.
You'll have to add the new PC's content back into the itunes library. You might want to turn copy files back off before doing that.

• Transferring profile to new hard drive.

Alright, I have spent the last couple days trying to use other users' threads to solve this issue, but I cannot seem to get this to work. I have a failed hard drive that has a lot of mozilla information on it, and I've been trying to find a way to bring that profile (bookmarks, cookies, history and all) over from that hard drive onto this one, and have it be exactly like I left it.
I have tried copying the profile folder from the C:/user/appdata/local/mozilla/profiles folder, as well as using firefox.exe -p, and I am not sure what I'm doing wrong. When I try to open the the profile, nothing is there like bookmarks or history or anything. Any help or guidance would be appreciated.

Firefox keeps its profiles in this location on Vista/Windows 7:
* C:\Users\<user>\AppData\Roaming\Mozilla\Firefox\Profiles\<profile>\
To make Firefox see a profile, you also need the profiles.ini file that registers the profile or use the Profile Manager to create a new profile and click the Choose Folder button to select a profile that you've copied and isn't currently registered in the profile manager.

• Error code 36 when copying files to external hard drive!

I keep getting this error when I try to copy files to my external hard drives. It is the same error no matter what drive I use. It says it cannot perform the operation because the data cannot be written - like there is a permissions problem, but I checked all the files, and there is no permission problems. The file sizes are small .iff and .jpg --- There is not more than 10 characters in the naming, so what is going on? I have folders inside of folders, and it will not copy - but if I go into the folders and copy each file one at a time, by itself, it works. I don't get it? Anybody have any thoughts?

• Permissions problem when copying files from external hard drive

Hi.
I have recently reinstalled leopard (wiped the hard drive clean) on my macbook pro. (10.5.4). I had used Time Machine so I have a complete backup. But I only wanted a few of the files so I didn't do a backup restore. I went into the file directory of the backup on my external hard drive and dragged the folders I wanted back over to my laptop.
But I'm in permissions **** though! When I want to copy them over I get an alert saying you may not have privilege to do this and asks for my password. I enter my password and it copies fine. But every time I want to do anything with those files (like move them, or delete them) I have to re enter a password.
So, inside of the terminal I do a "ls -al" command to see whats going on and find that everything is the same as a natively created folder except for a '@' on the permissions column. I do a "ls -al@' to see more details and I get this:
drwxr-xr-x@ 6 xenition staff 204 Jul 20 17:08 Assets
com.apple.metadata:_kTimeMachineNewestSnapshot 50
com.apple.metadata:_kTimeMachineOldestSnapshot 50
I did run repair permissions from Disk Utility and it didn't solve it. How can I resolve the permissions on these files?
Message was edited by: risingtiger

run ls -aleO on the copied files and see if there are any ACLs or flags.
BTW, another (and possibly better) way to restore files from an old TM drive is via TM interface. control-click on TM in the dock and choose "browse other TM disks" select a disk to browse and go at it. when you try to restore something you'll be prompted for a location to restore it to and maybe a password.

• Macbook Pro restarts or freezes when pressure is put on hard drive location

(Mid-2012, 13")
I've posted about this before, but have since looked up the locations of hardware in the Macbook and know what it is that's restarting it.
When I say 'pressure is put on hard drive', I don't mean intentionally putting a large weight on it. I can rest my palm on the left corner, and it's fine, but picking the laptop up with one hand in that location to shift it over, or accidentally resting my elbow on it, it then restarts or freezes. It's never done so in the past, so I'm worried the hard drive might not be doing too well.
I'm not too savvy with computer hard ware, so am reaching out and wanting to find out what sort of repairs/maintenance I'm looking at.

Take the computer to an Apple store or an AASP. Whichever is more convenient for you.

Installed a Samsung HM640jj hard drive in my Macbook Pro. Since then the keyboard and trackpad freeze if not in use. As long as I keep scrolling around on the pad everything works fine but as soon as I stop they both freeze. On startup the freezes only last a few seconds but the longer my mac is on the longer the freezes last. I've tried a lot of tricks from other posts but no luck. Not sure if its a glitch with the drive or if I should wipe it and reinstall from OS disk to see if that works. Any ideas? Thanks
