MDD won't boot

I have a FW800 and just bought a MDD with out a hard disk (cheap). Thought I could use it for a server or sell. I installed 2 80 GB drives and tried to load the OS. When I tried my 10.5 install DVD, started, held down the C key it spit out the DVD. So I tried my old 10.4 install DVD. The install started then finally quit with a blank screen. I installed the backup HD from my FW800 and tried to boot up. It looked normal but just before the desk top would have appeared I got a kernal panic. Each one of the attempts I tried several times. TechTool Pro booted fine and showed no malfunctions. Same with DiskWarrior. If my software is routinely used and my hardware tested good what else is there to try? Oh, my FW800 is up and running normally.

I installed 2 80 GB drives and tried to load the OS.
Did you set both jumpers to "cable select?" That's teh preferred config.
When I tried my 10.5 install DVD, started, held down the C key it spit out the DVD.
What does you 10.5 disk look like. If it's a gray system disk from another PowerPC Mac, it may not work. If it's one that came with an Intel Mac, it work work at all.

I've got a strange problem I've never seen before. I've got a dual gig MDD with combo drive that won't boot correctly unless the CD tray is out/ejected. If the tray is empty and closed, the system won't boot. If it's open, it does. Simple as that.
Can anyone point me to the solution? I don't know if I need a firmware update or what. I'm running 10.3.9. Norton's Systemworks 3.0 was run on it recently. I know that's a really bad idea, but I didn't do it. Just thinking it might be once cause of the problem.
Any help is appreciated.

OK, the Norton "thang" has been beaten to death...
I would not trust the uninstaller. Many uninstallers fail to remove EVERYTHING. Whenever I run an uninstaller, I perform a manual search for any remaining software "parts." Search for anything with "Norton," "Symantec," and "Works" in its name, and, if it is in any /library or /System/Library folder, (of the /Users/Home counterparts), and if its name remotely suggests a connection to the old System Works software, move it to your desktop (so you can put it back, if necessary). Then test for the malfunction.
Still, your drive drawer issue sure seems to suggest a hardware problem, such as a short, or something (I'm hardly an electrician.:)
If you're feeling brave, why not remove the Combo Drive. If the problem goes away, you can just replace that drive (with an upgrade?).

Mac MDD won't boot from the OS 9.1 install CD.

I thought the MDD was the last of the dual boot Macs. I have 10.5.6 installed on one HD and I want to install 9.1 on a separate internal HD. Whether you hold down the C key or select the 9.1 install CD as the start up disk you get the little apple face for a couple seconds then it jumps back to 10.5 and finishes booting. Start up disk in prefs shows the 9.1 install CD as bootable. What is happening here?

I thought the MDD was the last of the dual boot Macs.
It is, with the Mac OS 9 version that shipped with it, which is a CPU specific version of Mac OS 9.2.2. Older Mac OS 9 versions either won't start it up or won't install, and can't recognize anything on the ATA-6 bus.

My G4 MDD won't boot at all

My G4 froze last saturday and after a forced shut down, the fans would start spinning really fast and nothing else would happen. After reading some of the threads on that subject, I did a deep PMU reset, didn't work the first but worked once I booted the G4 without any RAM. I shuted it down, reinstalled the memory, 1 DIMM at a time (2x256 & 1 x 512) and everything seemed fine and dandy. It froze again a couple of hours later .
I thought I had a bad memory module so I tried to isolated the problem by trying out the different DIMMs, one at a time, and in different slots.
I also kept on looking around for more info and found out that it could also be my bootup HDD that has some corrupted data. It seemed to make sense as I just installed a new HDD a few days before and use Carbon Copy Cloner to copy the content of my previous booting HDD.
But the problem that I have, is that I can't even try a safe mode start as my G4 won't even boot up anymore, even after a deep PMU reset. The only thing that I manage to do is to have boot with no PMU battery and no RAM (heard the one chime indicating the absence of RAM), but now it won't even do that.
What should I do? Is the PMU still good? Is there anything else I can do to try so that my G4 will at least startup so that I can perform a disk check??

I'd do a block test on the drive and also run the apple hardware test to see if you find anything. a new drive could have bad blocks although not too often. If all passes, you need to try a reinstall (making the existing system your previous system) or clean install.
pressing the pmu too many times or too long will drain the battery quickly but that doesn't have anything to do w/ the fan it could help keep your video from working though. Did you try to zapp the pram?
if you have no video. how do you know it's not booting? it almost sounds like a logic board problem.

I seem to be having a problem many have seen. When I shut down my G4/MDD, it won't power back up unless I unplug and replug the power cable.
I have replace the system battery and reset PMU. Any other ideas?
Could the power supply or power button/board be problematic?

I think it's more likely the PSU, but the Logic Board is what everything connects to...

Power Mac G4 (MDD) Won't Boot, Gives Error Screen "You need to restart..."

Hey guys, I got this Power Mac G4 (Dual 1.42GHz, 2GB Ram) from a neighbor about 3 weeks ago and it has been smooth sailing since I got it. However today my brother was using it, and got the rainbow loading mouse for a long time, nothing would open, I couldn't force quit any of the programs. So I just told him to hold the power button and restart. Well on reboot you hear the tone, then the Apple Logo appears then the screen shows up and says "You need to restart your computer..."
It happens no matter how many times I restart my computer. I've reset the RAM and the PRAM but it does the same thing. Any suggestions?

Oh man, I'm so confused now. I don't know what could have happened.
I put in my Leopard Disc (that I got with my MBP) and booted it from disc, and it said I couldn't install 10.5 because 10.4 or later couldn't be found. That *****, could it be because I was running 10.5.4 and maybe it doesn't recognize it because 10.5.4 came out after this disc was made?
Also, since there are 3 hard drives, I don't know which one I have Leopard on, it's one of the 120gbs, but since this is handed down I don't know which drive is which and I don't know how to take the hard-drives out from the bracket, is there instructions for removing/installing hard drives.

EDIT: I talked to the guy who gave me this computer, he said that there was a problem with the battery, he said he replaced it about a year ago. Do you think that the battery could be a culprit in this problem?

MDD FW 400 won't boot OS 9 | System error "Unimplemented Trap" Huh?

Hey guys, I need help with a weird problem. I recently bought a MDD dual 1.25 with 1.5MG RAM, CPU Type:PowerPC G4 (3.3), Boot ROM Version: 4.4.8f2. It came with a single 60 gig drive in it with OS 10.2.6, and it used to boot directly to the OS 9 system folder just fine. I took out that drive, installed it in my old Blue & White POS, gave that to my wife and now have: a seagate 80 gig drive (originally in the B&W), as well as a 160 gig & a 200 Gig.
All three drives have 9.2.2 on their own partitions, as well as on the 2 master drives with OS 10.3.8 & 10.3.6 respectively. I can’t boot directly to 9 from any of them.
The 200 gig drive was the only one of the 3 formatted directly from within the MDD, clean install, with OS9 drivers selected on install.
When I select ANY of the OS9 partitions, even the OS9 system folders on the OSX partitions for that matter, I get:
1. a grey screen (for a little too long)
2. then a happy mac box (and the cursor appears)
3. Then an empty floppy disk icon
4. Then a “?” inside the floppy disk icon
5. finally a system 9 style “bomb box” and:
“sorry, a system error occurred. Unimplemented trap. To temporarily turn off extensions, restart and hold down the shift key” .
There is a restart button. Perhaps I should mention the error dialog is apparently blocking what appears to be the “Welcome to Mac OS 9.1” screen before the icon march.
Maybe that 9.1 means nothing, but I HAVE NO 9.1 system folders on any disks. They are all 9.2.2... Well that part just bugs me.
The issue is that when I click “restart” and hold down the shift key as directed, the same actions above 1 thru 5 happen, and I’m back at the bomb.
The only way out of the cycle is to “option restart”, and all my partitions show up EXCEPT the OS 10.3.8 partition I had begun the process from. Since I have another OSX partition on one of the disks, I can select that and boot to it no problem. I am then able to select the original OSX partition on the “main” drive, and return to square one, where the cycle began. All the OS 9 system folders can be used to “boot” classic mode, and Tech Tool, Disk Warrior, all are run regularly and report minimal issues. The machine works fine, except for this one issue.
So, why is my MDD preventing me from booting directly into OS9? I read somewhere on another thread that the boot ROM is system specific, so that might answer why the drive pulled from the B&W won’t boot to 9, but the new drive was formatted by the MDD disks, and I even tried a reinstall of OS9 to that disk in an attempt to “unstick” the system. All system 9 folders reside on master drives (so slave is not the issue).
But none of the 9.2.2 folders when selected will bring me anywhere but the bomb, apparently “TRYING” to boot OS9.
WHAT am I missing here? Any ideas?

Consider me dyslexic about the MDD. I don't know how
to reset the PMU on it. My beige G3 had a button on
the motherboard
there is a button on the motherboard of the G4. Location and color may vary. Usually black or red, mounted on a raised silver or black square...typically about 1/4" square
the B&W had a "programmers button" on the front faceplate
That's also known as an 'interrupt switch' With the appropriate debugger software, programmers could push that button and call up the debugger, which would allow them to trace their code and issue low level commands. Sometimes useful to break out of a crashed program without pulling the plug.
I know what I know from doing & reading and yes I have a
system folder or two that began in a 6320CD Performa
I think that was one of the machines that required a special file to boot - which is the file I cannot recall the name.
If that file still exists in your system folder, then it may be the culprit.
I'm certified dangerous because of knowledge gaps....

Terminate and Stay Resident. Actually a DOS term for a program that runs, quits, but remains loaded in memory.
Apple calls them inits.
Many of the icons that appear during the OS9 boot process are functionally TSRs.
Init conflicts usually were the result of two or more of these programs fighting over the same block of ram.

No. The files should be visible. Since you can't yet boot to 9 (thus might not be able to get to use startup manager), I gave you the hard way to find and disable them.
Recall the OS9 startup mananager, which allows you to selectively enable and disable startup items? When you use startup manager, active items (with a check) will be in a folder named, for example, Control Panels. Inactive items, those without a check, will be in a folder named Control Panels (disabled)
To activate the startup manager at boot, hold down the spacebar. It should be the first thing to load. You can select OS9 only, none, or selectively tunr items on/off. Startup manager will automatically move items from the active to the disabled folder.
If you know the file names, you can manually move things from one folder to another, (which is the process I described)
All those files load in alphabetical order. Some of those items want to be loaded first, so the file was named with a leading space, period, or similar. ( Adobe type manager, for example)
There are a couple that are named such that they will load before startup manager.
Since your crash is almost immediate, I'm betting it's one of the first to load TSRs thats causing the problem.
The 80 gig resides in the B&W, so you're suggesting,
pulling it, installing it in the MDD & dragging the
system folder from there?
That is one method. Or mount the BW with Target disk mode and copy it across. Or copy the system folder to CD.
or if the machines are networked, copy across the network. Or USB memory stick, depending on the size of the folder.
The object is to get a known working drive with a known working/bootable OS into the new machine. Since I know my machine will not see either the 200 or 160 when boot to 9, and on some machines, 9 will not see anything over 128gb, I suggest getting a known good copy of 9 on a drive physically smaller than 128gb (not a sub 128 gb partition of a much larger drive)
Temporarily disconecting the larger drives has no purpose beyond helping eliminate the complexity during diagnostics and troubleshooting. You know they work as intended, and are not part of the problem.

If you shut the door, the power switch light turns off and the computer freezes. I'm running a house fan over the board to keep it cool. It's not running hot, was not running hot.
Reset PMU, checked all cables for pinching, inspected the power switch cable, reseated power plug on main board, removed optical drive,
tested ram...
Otherwise the machine is rock solid. I'm stumped, but thinking power supply......
G4 MDD 1.25 Dual Mac OS X (10.4.9)

Had the exact same problem myself. After looking at this topic I noticed that one of the 5V cables was getting jammed in the bottom left hand corner of the door. The case had cut the insulation open and was obviously causing short circuit when the case closed. I put some tape around the damaged cable and tucked it inside the case. Problem solved!

No hardware changes to this machine for several years. Recently it locked up
and I rebooted it - I get a light gray screen with an Apple logo and nothing else
happens.
I cannot boot OS X from CD/DVD, but I can boot the hardware test and run all the tests (all of them pass). I can also boot from a Linux CD.
I've tried various startup key combinations (cmd-opt-P-R, cmd-opt-N-V, etc.) but
I still cannot boot into OS X from either CD/DVD or from the HD.
I tried Techtool deluxe (from old Applecare) and that won't boot the machine since it too is OS X.
Any ideas on what to try next?

Computer Won't Boot Up

Here is my issue, my computer one day was working fine and the next it won't boot properly.
System Specs: Satellite T235D-S1345RD (Laptop) - Windows 7 (64bit) - BIOS 1.7 - 4gb RAM -
I have gotten the computer booted one time. I am unsure why it did that time but did not do it another time.
Since that one time I put the computer in hibernate and when I tried to bring it out it told me it failed when coming out of hibernate so it went to reboot and now won't boot.
Here are the few steps I have done to try and get it working. When it boots up it gives me an error message (says that power failed or for some reason it did not boot)
I have ran "Repair Computer" and it does not do anything. I try start windows normally and it goes no where.
So I then tried F8 and got into the Advanced Boot Menu. First one I tried was Start Windows From Last Known Good Configuration. (or something like that I forget the exact wording)
When it does that the computer will start to boot up go to the "Windows Loading" screen and then it flashes a blue screen (there are words there but it flashes so quickly I cannot read it) and it goes back to the boot screen and acts like it is restarting and continues in that loop.
Next step - Enter F8 again tried "Repair Computer" and it loads to a black screen with a Cursor but nothing ever happens. I have given it over 30 min and nothing happens.
So next step- I enter F8 again and try to boot up in safe mode and again when it loads it flashes a blue screen and then nothing.
EDIT - I found how to show the blue screen. It says UNMOUNTABLE_BOOT_VOLUME. Not sure what else I should do after I get that error message. Message Reads:
It reads UNMOUNTABLE_BOOT_VOLUME and says if it's the first time I've seen the error screen, to restart the computer. Then it tells me if it appears again, to check and make sure any new hardware or software is properly installed.
"If problems continue, disable or remove any newly installed hardware or software. Disable BIOS memory options such as caching or shadowing. If you need to use Safe Mode to remove or disable components, restart your computer, press F8 to select Advanced Startup Options, and then select Safe Mode."

Next Step: I come to you guys here on this forum. I am a bit perplexed and lost at what to do. I wonder if this is a virus but I cannot get the computer to respond to try to get into it to check.
Ideas? Advice? What should I try? I can get into the F8 menu but not sure what else I should try. I will try anything to get this computer up and running!

If you're under warranty, HP would send you replacement HDD.
If you're not, buy any branded 2.5" SATA 9.5mm thick internal laptop HDD and replace it yourself. But HDD of at least same capacity HDD as the one that came with your laptop (640gb) so that recovery media would work -
Go through page 56-58 in the Manual for replacement procedure. It's quite simple DIY job.

If you've not yet created the Recovery media to restore the factory settings after replacement, you have to order a set of Recovery USB from HP.
For salvaging the data from old HDD, I suggest you take out the drive. Connect it to another PC using SATA to USB adapter - copy all the files you need.

Satellite m300 won't boot! please help!

I've got a bit of an issue here.. I have a Satellite m300.. a white one..
and it won't boot... I've had this very issue before but it turned out to be an external USB HDD that stopped it from booting up but now even with everything removed it still won't boot.
And it was fine until yesterday, it just gave up.. I am away from home for work so I have all the work stuff and unfortunately without my recovery cd, but my guess is that it won't even read it..
So this is what happens..
turn on..
all light come on.. including power and all the white lights around the keypad..
and then maybe 5 sedconds later caplock and numlock(?) green lights flash..
then it's a dead still.. no HDD activities or sound.. just dead quite..
the screen remains black blank through out..
it seems to get stuck here before reaching the post screen.
i thought the power button usually took more than just a push to turn off? it instantly swithces off with a single push of the power button..
I think this laptop is like on sleep or something and can't seem to wak up.. maybe?
And it has vista.
Please help.. I have some important work files I need to recover at least before formatting..
and that has to wait till I get home which won't be for a month or so..
which also lets me take it back for warranty as well..
any help appreciated!!!

Could it have a bad AGP port?
Any other suggestions? I am thouroughly stumped. Also the power and reset buttons don't work no matter what configuaration I put the front panel connectors in. The Power LED is lit up and it doesn't work and the reset light is off and it doesn't work.
Also noticed one of my fans connected to one of the two other fan pins on the motherboard isn't working.
What a nightmare.

Mid 2010 MacBook Pro won't boot past blue screen

I've been having problems booting up my MacBook. I can't get past the blue screen. It went from booting slow at the grey apple logo screen to not booting up at all. Is it a problem with my hard drive? I also have boot camp running as well, but I can still see the boot camp drive for windows and my OS X drive, as well as my installation disk when I have it inserted when I hold the option key at start up.
I'm still able to run windows on it without any problems when I pick the windows drive. I tried different methods from different forums but I'm just not getting through. I tried holding 'c' to boot up from cd and I let it run over night but it never got past the grey apple screen with the gradient wheel (still spinning). I had already used time machine to back everything up before this happened since I was able to boot up properly (but slowly). Can anyone help? It's driving me nuts, and I can't remember what os/firmware version I'm running.

n your signature you said you are running 10.6.3. So let’s assume you are running Snow Leopard.
It sounds like your diagnosis of disk problems is correct. The OS X partition may be corrupt.
Try booting in Safe Mode.

Try again to boot in normal mode.
If it will boot in Safe Mode but not in normal mode then you could have some 3rd-party software preventing the boot or you could have a corrupt disk or OS.
Boot as from the startup manager (Boot - option) and then select the installation disk.
Hopefully that will work better than starting with the Boot-C option.
Then try to repair the system disk.
Start the Disk Utility.
Perform the steps in http://support.apple.com/kb/PH5836.
If it repairs OK but still won’t boot reinstall OS X.

And this system used to boot like this just fine some while ago (probably before it was upgraded to Yosemite). I've reset the NVRAM (twice) to no avail.
Has anyone encounter this? Anyone have a solution? Should I try an SMC reset (always a bit nervous about that)? Might it be a driver issue in Yosemite?

IMac shut down suddenly and won't boot back up

This morning my iMac shut down suddenly. All I had open was Google Chrome and I was just on Facebook and that's it. When I tried to boot it back up, it wouldn't load past the startup sound, wherein it would appear to shut back down,or at the very least the screen would go black (my mouse has lights that stay on when the computer is on, and the light kept going on and off while the screen remained black). This was the case for at least a half hour until it suddenly booted itself back up all on its own. I had it on throughout the day, just browsing the internet and watching Youtube. It shut itself down twice during the day, and both times it restarted on its own right away after showing me a grey screen with the Apple logo and a progress bar. Now it just shut itself down again and it won't make it past the progress bar screen - if it even makes it that far, sometimes it shuts off right after it makes the startup sound. It keeps trying to boot up on its own over and over again, but it keeps shutting down right away. All the fixes I've searched for so far require a computer that actually boots up all the way so I don't think I could run any reports if I tried!
I'm running the latest version of Yosemite (10.10.2?).

3.2 GHz Intel i3 processor, 4MBshared level 3 cache
4GB of 1333MHz DDR SDRAM
1TB serial ATA hard drive
ATI Radeon HD 5670 graphics processor with 512 MB of GDDR3 memory
Bought it around fall of 2010. Not sure if it's worth trying to get it fixed (I live nowhere near an Apple store) or if I should just get a new computer, but I would like to know what's wrong, if possible.

Try to boot into the Recover Partition by holding down the Command + R keys on startup. If it still won't boot then the HD has probably crashed. The is likely a AASP in your area, you can locate one by clicking AASP Locator, take it to one to be professional diagnosed. If it's only the HD, assuming you have been backing up, restoring to a new HD is pretty simple.

[865PE NEO2 PFISR] Won't boot with added memory

Recently I upgraded a few items on my PC which has been running fine for 18 months or so. I changed out the video card and bought double the memory of the same brand and type it had in it. I went from 1gig (2 sticks) and added two more sticks. But now it won't boot. The power is on but no output whatsoever.
I RMA'd the memory thinking that might be the problem but it's the same with the new set. I tried all sorts of memory/slot combos. Basically, the new memory works fine if you swap it out in bank A with the old stuff. That's how it's running right now, so I know all of the sticks are good. I can take a third and put it in either slot bank B and it'll boot, but obviously not run properly. But any combination of these four sticks and the system won't boot!

What brand, model, and speed are the RAM sticks. Did you check your Test Report booklet which came with the mobo. If you can't find it, you can go to the MSI website and look for your MOBO and get the test report that way. Some brands/models will that have been tested are shown in the report to be okay in all 4 slots, some only test okay in 2 or 3. Check this report and if it is one of the brands/model/speed tested you will see how it fared. It may well be you the MOBO doesn't like your RAM in 3 or 4 slots.
Maybe I missed it, but did you try each slot with only one stick at a time? You may also have a bad RAM slot.
