MDM Capabilities

Hi there,
I just wonder what MDM is all about there for I have some questions:
1. Using MDM for Global Business Partner(BP) Management, why do I need the BP component as it seems to be that MDM is capable all the functionalities and more the BP component have?
2. Is MDM capable to do the following: MDM gets BP information from a none SAP system, on the basis of the information MDM decides if the data set needs to be updated and what kind of information is updated e. g. the address data has changed . Also MDM triggers the update of another MDC with the relevant Address data. Can MDM decide if the data set is an update or an insert and can MDM provide this information to a MDC?
3. Is there any IDES MDM system where clients and partners can proof a conceptional design.
Cheers, Jochen

Hi Jochen,
i have got the impression you confuse 2 or 3 things ...
1) there is a built-in master data object, the business partner... is that, what you mean by BP?
2) the Master Data Server is , technically based upon the BW-Technology, eg process chains within the MDS, like data extraction are based upon those chains...
3) the Business Warehouse appears as optional component within the MDM Concept; hence, if you want to do global spend analysis across systems you have to have the "extra" BW.
Am I that right, that you mix up BW and BP??? If not, forget about the above statements...
Concerning your second question: Yes. MDM can look for duplicates of the new incoming dataset in its database (the contents of which originates from other Client Systems) - if there is a match with an existing dataset you can update this set in your original system (whether sap or non-sap). Before you take any MDM action you define identifying attributes - so when you do an update - automatically the relevant set-attributes get replaced - the rest stays untouched. Also you can define workflows on the MDS; based uppon the matching result different actions might take place.
3) good question? you ask for a public accessible system for testing purposes? write to SAP !!! You've got my voice and vote
greetings, matthias

  • Creation of Product  in MDM version 3.0

    Hi All ,
Its Raja Singh presently working on SAP-MDM version 3.0. We have a client who wants to replace their master data system to SAP-MDM prefebly.
In view of this i wanted to show them how a Proudct/Business partner will be created in SAP MDM.
AS I am able to create Buiness partner and change master using transaction codes but i unable to do so for PRODUCT as i don't know the T-Code for the same.
Do i need some setting to have t-code for creation of PRODUCT.
When I am using t-code commpr1 , it says " This T-code is locked in MDM use portal".
Can anyone guide me how to proceed step by step for creation of Product in MDM. you can Email me also relevent document at [email protected]

    Hi Raja,
I didn't quite understand what you mean by creating/changing data using transaction codes, because within SAP MDM 3.0 you are in a portal environnment and don't work with transaction codes.

  • Language Support in MDM

    Hi All,
Does anyone tried MDM for Language interpretation like portuguese, chinese etc in a Global Scenario.
If yes let me know the MDM Capabilities in interpretation of Master Data into another languages.
    Regards
    Veera

There are two levels to langage support. One is for GUI where limited languages are supported. However, at data level, multi language support is available.
You need to define language requirements in the repository and maintain data in respecive language. (Also you need to enable languages at MDM server level in Console.)
Since MDM is unicode compliant, you can maintain data in different languages.
    Hpe this helps.

  • SAP MDM Vs IBM MDM

    Hello Experts,
I am new to MDM, and want to know what is difference between SAP MDM and IBM MDM.
Also please provide some good documetation on SAP MDM.
For what it is used, what are the advantages of using it and all.
    Thanks,
    Suma

    hi,
SAP MDM:SAP MDM enables master data on customers, partners and products to be consolidated and harmonized across the enterprise, making it available to all staff and business partners. A key component of SAP NetWeaver, SAP MDM ensures data integrity across all IT systems. With SAP NetWeaver MDM, customers can manage master data and supplemental content, such as texts, PDF documents, high-resolution images, or diagrams in a central business information warehouse.
    Advantages of SAP MDM
SAP Master Data Management (SAP MDM) is a component of SAP's NetWeaver product group and is used as a platform to consolidate, cleanse and synchronise a single version of the truth for master data within a heterogeneous application landscape. It has the ability to distribute internally and externally to SAP and non-SAP applications. SAP MDM is a key enabler of SAP Enterprise Service-Oriented Architecture. Standard system architecture would consist of a single central MDM server connected to client systems through SAP Exchange Infrastructure using XML documents, although connectivity without SAP XI can also be achieved
There are five standard implementation scenarios:
    Content Consolidation
    Master Data Harmonisation
    Central Master Data Management
    Rich Product Content Management
    Global Data Synchronization
    The IBM View
In IBM's view, MDM is a set of disciplines, technologies, and solutions used to create and maintain consistent, complete, contextual, and accurate business data for all stakeholders (users, applications, data warehouses, processes, enterprises, trading partners, and so on). It's a holistic framework for managing structured and unstructured data that's aligned with business processes and managed throughout the information life cycle
To a large extent, SAP’s NetWeaver initiatives are concessions to the reality of heterogeneity. No customer is going to have a completely SAP- or Oracle-based environment. With NetWeaver and Fusion, SAP and Oracle propose to accommodate the heterogeneous data-access requirements of their customers while keeping their bread-and-butter application software at the heart of things.
IBM’s middleware vision displaces the primacy of the ERP vendors. It’s probably too much to say that customers who embrace Big Blue’s WebSphere data integration middleware can pick and choose from between and among best-of-breed financial, SCM, and MRP (among others) products for their enterprise application needs. If nothing else, however, IBM’s data integration and MDM middleware stack does give customers an alternative to SAP .
However one of the problems with IBM’s approach to MDM is that, taken in isolation, it would mean that application vendors would need to completely rewrite their applications to take advantage of the MDM layer. This isn’t going to happen, not least because vendors like SAP have their own MDM capabilities.
Moreover, users those do not want to convert to IBM's new multiform MDM offering will have to
negotiate separate maintenance agreements to protect their long-term investments in
WPC (which is WebSphere Product Center is a product information management solution for building a consistent central repository.).
Lastly, users should work with IBM to ensure that the standard IBM three-year
maintenance commitment will continue with the current WPC product, independent of
any move to a single MDM platform.

    Nisha

  • Coding is requird 4 MDM?

    Hi experts,
I am new to MDM. what are the prerequisites to learn MDM.
Is there any relation with BW.
and is there is any coding in MDM?
    Thnx and regards,
    Prerna.

MDM is a niche area.It is one of the evolving component of the NetWeaver Stack . BW/BI is a reporting tool .What MDM does in conjunction with BI is ,MDM consolidates Master Records from different Sources and hands it over to BI for Reporting.
It Must be remebered that MDM dosesnt have any intelligence within. There is no coding within the MDM tool .It all works in drag and drop fashion.Since you have BI knowledge MDM is a good area for you to venture upon.
I am giving you a brief insight over MDM Capabilities.
MDM stands for Master Data Management.Master Data of an organization drives the Transactions .So Master Data quality directly influences the reporting quality. That is why Master Data Management has become such a prominent domain of expertise.
Organizational challenges are the “people” challenges – the ones that are introduced as a by-product of changing the way people both manage and view information. There are 4 issues to be taken care of broadly.
    • The Strategic Vision
    • Data Ownership
    • Performance-Oriented Management
    • Change Management
    Operational Challenges
Choosing to deploy a master data management program is a strategic decision that reverberates across the enterprise.
Just like the operational challenges of construction projects are finessed through proper planning and governance, the critical operational challenges of MDM involve instituting the appropriate oversight into a rapidly changing environment, including:
    • Data Quality Management
    • Data Standards Management
    • Data Governance
    • Data Integration
    Technology Challenges
Master data management is not just software; it is a solution that embodies a management program, linking technology, principles, and policies. Once the governance infrastructures are in place, and the policies have been defined and endorsed within the enterprise, though, there are a number of technical hurdles that must also be cleared for a smooth migration to the MDM environment:
    • Selecting and MDM Architecture style
    • Transitioning to the new infrastructure
    • Performance
The IT scenario consists of the following scenario variants:
     Master-data consolidation
Allows to identify identical master data objects within heterogeneous landscapes,
merge identical objects centrally, and provide the relevant key mapping information for
further use in business operations or analytics.
Master-data harmonizationOrganizations can cleanse master data on materials, retail articles, suppliers, and
customers and leverage the results to perform enterprise-wide analytics, such as
global spend analyses. Consolidated master data is then distributed to the connected
remote systems to streamline business operations based on high-quality data.
Central master-data managementOrganizations can consolidate and centrally manage their master data. They can
support company-wide quality standards by ensuring that central control of master
data begins as soon as the data is created.

  • 3rd party tools

    Hi SDNers!!!!
Can anybody tell me what are the various 3rd party tool available that can be used with MDM for data validation\quality\cleansing etc. and a brief description about these tools.
Is there anydocs available for them in market.
    Thanks & Regards
    Dilmit Kaur Chadha

    Hi,
There are multiple third party tools that can be used with MDM for data management, but before considering these tools in he landscape, one must do a thorough comparision of Requirements vs MDM capabilities.
SAP MDM comes with a good combination of functionalities for cleansing, de-duplication, enrichment etc.
    Third Party Tools:
    Data Cleansing
    1. FirstLogic
    2. Trillium
    3. BO Metadata Manager
    4. ADDA
These are just some of the best products. There are many products deveoped for specific scenarios like Address validation, Zip Codes, D&B data for organization details, VAT validation etc.
Instead of the tools, you can also use the SAP MDM enrichment architcture to connect to the webservices.

  • Communication

I am trying to find out what format Intune is communicating in xml or what..?
What is it asking for from Exchange?
What is it trying to do in Exchage? Trigger events..? listeningor what..?
Is Intune using a specifc communication protocol..?
Looking at Intune to create a pilot, but there are some aspects where I need to know please can you help...

The resources on TechNet are probably the best place to start:
http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/jj733621.aspx . The main thing the Exchange connector in Intune is doing is querying information and setting ActiveSync policies. This is most likely done via PowerShell (it certainly is done with PowerShell
    in ConfigMgr).
Is there a reason you are specifically looking to use the Exchange connector though? That's more or less the poor man's MDM. Native Intune has far better MDM capabilities (and Intune connected with ConfigMgr is even better).

  • Technical requirements of  Discovery box

    Hi,
I would like to know what are the s/w and communication requirement for implementing discovery box with enrichment controller.
What is the advantage of using GP instead of workflow,MDM
    Thanks for the response,
    -reo

    Hi Reo,
comparing GP with MDM workflow is probably a bit like comparing apples with pears. The MDM capabilities focus on executing tasks around master data management specifically.
GP is more suited for integrating activities from heterogenous systems into a single process flow with a harmonized user interface. The process can be about anything and does not need to be related to a specific system, use case or functionality.
    Does that make sense?

  • Is it possible to prevent users from changing iPad background?

I am currently helping deploy 130 iPads for a school using Apple Configurator. I have set the desired wallpaper and lockscreen text via Apple Configurator, however this can easily be removed if a user decides to change the lockscreen wallpaper. Is there any way to set a restriction that would prevent a user from changing the lockscreen wallpaper? Any ideas would be greatly appreciated! Thanks for the help in advance!

I heard that with iOS6 MDMs could have the ability to remotely change the wallpaper and lockscreen OTA. So far Airwatch is the only one I've heard of that claims to be able to do it:

I hope other MDM's adopt this. It sure would be nice to be able to do this from an MDM.
    Hope this helps!

  • MDM Import manager data sources

    Hi experts,
As far as I know MDM has ETL capabilities with MDM Import/syndicator tools that allows to load and extract data to and from MDM using files and relational databases as source/target.
What different kind of data sources supports MDM Import manager?
When should we work with SAP XI/PI?
When sould we work with ETL (Data Services as Data Integrator)?
    Thanks in advance,
    Abby
Edited by: Abigail Beurmann on Nov 23, 2011 11:38 AM

    Hi Abigail,
So, Could you please tell me if it's a common practice to import data in MDM using files?
for example as you said, We want to import data from R/3 to MDM using XML files that XI/PI generates?
Yes its a common practice to import data in MDM in files. Most common mode of data exchange is xml which has many advantages namely it is accepted open standard, allows to clearly separate content from form (appearance), is text-oriented,is Secure, is extensible,is self-describing, is universal; meaning internationalization is no problem and XML is a future-oriented technology.
In our business scenario, We have a SAP CRM with SQL server 2005 as a source. Could MDM automatically import data directly from SQL Server or it's a better practice to generate XML files with PI using the Import Port/folder?
One should always use a interface as business rules can possibly change and making a later change could be huge ask.
So PI can act a interface between MDM and CRM.
CRM supports Bdoc and PI can integrate with CRM with help of ABAP Proxies.
The following thread provides you in depth information on integration of the 2 systems:

  • Scope of  Business Objects in MDM

    Hi MDM Experts
What is the scope of Business Objects in MDM,
How MDM can leverage its features and functionalities by using Business Objects.
    Regards
    Gaurav

    Hi
I know that "MillerCoors" was using SAP MDM & BO DQ
The comparison between SAP MDM & BO DQ capabilities are listed below. Putting it straight.
    1) Both have data quality capabilities. Validations for SAP MDM & Transforms for BO DQ. But the capabilities of BO DQ are much stronger than SAP MDM
    2) Both have de-duplication functionalities. While SAP MDM does not provide fuzzy matching capabilities, you more effectively find duplicates using BO DQ. But, merging of records, selecting individual fields for merged record is not possible in BO DQ. SAP  MDM has an upper hand here.
    3) Data enrichment is not possible in SAP MDM. BO DQ has built in dictionaries for Address check, zip codes etc.
Both tools have capabilities to connect to third party service like D&B. SAP MDM via the Enrichment Controller & DQ via web services.
    4) Data Management workflow capabilities of integrating users, data stewards in the data quality process is better in SAP MDM.
Based on these points, if one is going for a BO DQ + SAP MDM approach, to get the best results we can design all the data quality validations, transformations, de-duplication, enrichment in BO DQ & the master data management activities like data governance, business process etc in SAP MDM.

  • Using MDM in HR

Sector public has requirement to control information of people when they change from one public institution to other and they want to keep central ID for every body in order to have the complete record. MDM is made to work with this kind of situation?

    Hi Sam,
Generally, the consolidation of employee data in a cross-group environment may involve legal implications. For data consolidation you need at least the number and name of the employee, and the transfer of any such information on national or international scale is sometimes strictly forbidden.
Apart from that, there are often restrictions in the maintenance and reorganization of data.
However, SAP MDM offers capabilities to define customer-specific objects. So it might be possible (taken all legal requirements into account) to define a small employee record on MDM, e.g. to have at least the information which employee is on which pay-roll etc.

    Hi Jay,
As you seem to be clear with alternatives, i would be sharing about Masterdata management (i.e. MDM) from my perspective.
In general, benefits of keeping Master data in 1 place is
    Conformance/Auditing
    Single view of customer
    Global data synchronization efforts
    Accurate reporting
    Consolidation after mergers and acquisitions
    Reduced effort to consolidate information
    Reduced cleansing/mapping of information
    Increased efficiency
    Reduced costs overall.
