MDM suitable to manage "discreet device" data, like serial number, EPC code

We are exploring MDM as a replacement (and enhancement) for homegrown device master, but it's unclear to us from documentation whether MDM looks at "product" strictly in its logical definition (all physical products of same type has one set of data), or if it can have data structures to support unique device data, meaning each physically unique product, and its associated data being different.  Best example is probably storing serial number data for warranty purposes.  Ranges of serial numbers tied to a part # is not sufficient enough.  Obviously this means pulling Customer and Product master data together.  Any pointers would be appreciated.

In MDM you can classify your products based on Taxonomy.
Each Category in the Taxonomy can have attributes attached to it.
Ex: You could have two categories called "Digital Cameras" and "Photograhpic Films".
The attributes of these two categories may be different.
Ex: For digital Cameras, you could have attributes like "Resolution in Mega Pixels".
So when you create a product in the MDM, and assign this product to "Digital Cameras" category, then you can maintain the value for this attribute - Resolution in Mega Pixels.
In the Data Model in MDM, you can have fields and attributes.
Fields are information which you would want irrespective of the Category.
Ex: Every Product should have a Product Number, Product Description.
These are modeled as Fields.
Information which are Category specific are created as Attributes and these attributes  are linked to the Category.
The attributes are category specific.
As far as possible, try not to maintain any transactional data at all in MDM.
Is Serial Number really a Master Data?
Ex: If I am manufacturing Transmissions of Model-Trucks, then the serial numbers are more transactional.
A customer could have bought more than one transmissions from you. You have to maintain the Serial Numbers for each of the transmission for Warrenty purpose.
This is more transactional. Else you will end up storing all Serial Numbers of all Customer Sales Orders in MDM.
Avoid treating MDM as a transactional system.
This is just a thought.

  • IO231: Stock data of serial number &1 not suitable for movement

    Hi experts,
I have unique problem with serialized material posting. We are having serialized managed materials which are posted to quality inspection stock. The user was able to post partial quantity to unrestricted after usage decision but when tried to post remainig quantity it is giving error 'IO231: Stock data of serial number &1 not suitable for movement".I checked serial number history in iq02 & it shows that same serial numbers were used for some order in the past which is already delivered.I am not able to understand how it allowed to post same serial numbers again for the same material and if it is normal why it is giving above error when we try to post remaining quantity?
I tried by changing serial profile in the material master with all optional fields and without stock check and equipment and try to post but its not working.
I want to somehow post material to unrestricted use from quality inspection with or without serial numbers.
I am working on 4.7 system

  • Stock data of serial number not suitable for movement

We have a situation where we have had to put some serialized parts on a rework production order.  When we are trying to bring them back into stock, we're getting a message that says "Stock data of serial number not suitable for movement."  I'm guessing that this is because this serial number had existed in stock before (since this is a rework of an existing material/serial number.)  We need to receive this back into stock using this same serial number. How is that possible?
Thanks in advance for your help.

  • Is it possible to tell what OS is on the device by the serial number on the box?

I just got a BB curve and it has OS 4.3. I want OS 4.5 but I have a mac so I can't load it. I also went to several sprint stores and they couldn't update my BB for me.
So, I am wondering if you can tell what OS may be on the device (i.e., the date of manufacture) from the serial number. If you can, does anybody have any idea what to look for in the SS number or how to interpret it? I'm thinking of going back to the store where I bought mine and replacing it with a new one with a later serial number and I want to make sure that I get one with 4.5.
    Solved!
    Go to Solution.

You'll have to do the update on a PC. However once you update to 4.5 you can make use of the wireless upgrade feature

hi i have an iphone4 and i lost it how can i find it online i have all information about it like serial number

If you enabled the "Find My iPhone" feature prior to the device being lost, go to iCloud.com, sign in and select the locate option.
If you did not enable the feature prior to the device being lost then you are basically out of luck.

  • 27" Imac Order date vs Manufactured date - unrecognized serial number

I received my 27" Imac I3 ordered February 24, 2011 shipped next day Fedex on February 25, 2011. The Apple weight sticker is dated 9/22/2010! There is another weight sticker under it which I can not read and I don't want to peel off the top one. The serial number matches that week (QP038.....). It was "assembled in USA" and shipped from Mira Loma, CA. The only deviation from the 'standard configuration' was the substitution of the wired numeric keyboard in place of the wireless.
This was a replacement machine courtesy of Applecare for a 24" Imac that had 2 unsuccessful LCD panel replacements. I just got 'lucky' in getting 2 bad LCD panels in a row! Applecare was first class about it and I am impressed.
First, is this unusual to receive a 5+ month old machine?
Second, there is a little problem in that the senior tech I'm dealing with stated that the serial number cannot be found in the system and it will require a bit of special work contacting a few departments to get it registered. He had me match the foot serial number with the box serial number and when I set it up and fire it up on Friday (I waited to talk to him before opening the box given the 5 month old issue) we will see if the serial number matches the foot and box and if it is the machine it is supposed to be. When I punched the serial number into the warranty search page it was not recognized as valid!
Has anybody experienced and/or heard of anything like this?
My intuition isn't giving me good feelings about this!

What color box was this in? Since this is a replacement machine, I'd guess that it is a refurb (which possibly was manufactured originally in 09/2010). Usually refurbs are assigned a new serial number; that could also happen if the logic board is replaced.
So, as long as you can register the new serial number and the warranty period shows correctly (probably ending 2/24 or 2/25, 2012), you should be fine. Apple does reserve the right to replace with refurbs per the warranty language.
So, open it, set it up, and check the serial number for registration. Did you tell the person you spoke with that this was an Applecare replacement machine?

  • Trial has expired and the Application Manager is now requesting a Serial Number. I have paid my subscription but don't seem to have a serial number.

I signed up to Creative Cloud Student, 6 weeks ago and started paying my monthly subscription immediately. When I downloaded the software (photoshop, indesign and illustrator), they appeared as trials.
The trials have now expired and I can no longer access the software. Adobe Application managed opens asking me to License the Software which requires a serial number.
I have looked through my emails from adobe and my adobe account online and cannot find a serial number anywhere.

CC  mostly asks for serial number if:
    1. There is no CC registered to the ID with which you had signed.
    2. There are entries of Adobe in Host files of the computer.
    3. The activation count has increased.
If the CC is asking for serial number, please follow the steps in Re: Invalid serial number?
You just need to activate the Cc with the Adobe ID with which it has been registered.
    Please refer to:

  • ASP/VBS Date as Serial Number

    Hi,
Can anyone help in converting a date as a serial number (as a
    number in
Excel) and convert it the other way?
    Thanks,
    Sanj

    Sanj
Not quite clear what you are asking. If you want to build a
    serial number
out of a date field you can use the DatePart functions to
    break it into
pieces which you could then reassemble with any additional
    code you want.

  • I bought an ipad 3 and at the back of the ipad got only the apple logo and no other information like serial number or where it was designed or manufactured.Could this still be from apple or fake

Many Ipad im seeing has the Apple logo and other informations at the back of the Ipad but mine comes with just the Apple logo at the center of the back and no other information given underneath.Could this still be a real one from Aple or fake because mine only have the Apple logo at the back

As fas as. I know, all iPads should have a serial number on the back of the device. Even refurbs that have a new or replaced back should have a serial and model number engraved on it. I would tend to think that you got a bootleg device.

  • Profile manager enrolled device names

I have been playing around with profile manger on 10.7.3 enrolling and iPhone and a couple of iPads.
The iPhone enrolls correctly and the name in the devices tab shows the device name "xxx's iphone" and I can see the information about the device including encryption, apps installed etc.
Both iPads appear to enroll correctly however instead of showing "xxx's iPad" they show the device name of "New Device".  I even tried pre-enrolling the device using the serial number and UUID and gave the device a meaningful name, however when then enrolling the device it accepts the enrollment and promptly chnages the name from the meaningful name back to "New Device".
I have tried this on both and iPad 2 and iPAd 3 running the latest IOS.
I also notice that the jobs that communicate with the device to collect the device informantion never complete, where they do for the iPhone.
I am sure this was working before the IOS 5.1 update.

I would try demoting your Open Directory server from Master to Standalone in the Server Admin app - there's an assistant in Server Admin > Open Directory > Settings > General > click the change button.
Once it's demoted to a standalone, restart.
From there, don't create an OD Master again - go to Profile Manager in Server.app and run through the wizard again.  In the process, it will create an OD Master for you.
    Hope that helps,
    Chris

  • Access stolen Serial Number from "Find my Device"

    Hi,
my Macbook has been stolen and Im trying to figure out its Serial Number to report it stolen with the police.
It is registered with my Apple ID but for some reason its not showing up unter "My Support Profile" (where I could normally see the Serial Number).
It comes up under my "Find my Device" in iCloud, though - where I can erase and lock it, but seemingly can't access its profile or serial number?
Since my Macbook is registered with "Find my Device" Account, does that mean its Serial Number is also saved with my account? And any way to access it?
    Thank you!
    P

It will not help now but for the future you could consider the following two options.
Give each Mac as part of its computer name the serial number
Setup a free account with Meraki Systems Manager - a free MDM service like Apple's Profile Manager, this will record the serial number and other useful information as well as letting you remotely lock/wipe devices, it supports both iOS and Mac devices

  • Serial Number Management-doubt

    Hi,
We are implementing SAP for trading products. We have a scenario that a material has 2 or 3 unique serial numbers.
We are planning to go for serial no. management.
How can the serial number management can be extended to the scenario.
Can we used batch management and serial number management.
    Please suggest.
    Regards,
    Krishna

    Krishna
Your requirement is not completely clear.
I am guessing you are saying that a specific object can have 3 serial numbers, example, you are a trading company dealing with Television sets, so you will a serial number to identify a particular piece, at the same time it will have another Serial number ID from the Manufacturer ( say Samsung) and one more assigned by the Main Distributor and so on. Is that the case?
Or are you talking about A TV having a Serial number and the Cathode Ray Tube (CRT- I know it is obsolete technology- but just an example) within the TV has another Serial Number and so on.
    Please clarify.
In any case I don't think you can have more than one Serial number assigned to a unique piece part. But you could use some fields within Serial Number master data- General tab- e.g. ManufSerialNo. and Inventory no to capture the 'other' serial numbers, but they will be just fields for information.
For the second case you may build a structure like an Ibase and have a hierarchy of Equipment; like TV with CRT, Tuner under it for example.
You can also use batch but batch is like a lot and signifies a set of products and not just one (usually).
Provide more info and you will have ideas coming from everyone.

Stock data of serial number 1234 not suitable for movement
when i am checking iq02 serial number is showing but checking in  MMbe there is not showing
    Regards
    Shiv

    hello,
to activate the serial numbers you first have to clear all the stock for this material (MVT 562 / 502 or other)
Than activate the serial in the material muster.
in your situation (if i understood correctly) what you need is:
    1.  disable the serial numbers for the material (move them to another material)
    2. deactivate the serial number in the material master
    3. get rid of all the stack - post it with  562 or 502
    4. activate serial numbers
    5. post the material back to stock - 561 / 501 - than the system will require a serial number for each unit
