MDNSResponder[25]: handleLNTGetExternalAddressResponse: Router returned...

Getting this error every 30 seconds or so - my log is getting huge....
Oct 28 21:51:00 PowerMacG4 mDNSResponder[25]: handleLNTGetExternalAddressResponse: Router returned bad address
Oct 28 21:51:00 PowerMacG4 mDNSResponder[25]: Error getting external address 3
Any ideas?
If I go to Acitvity Monitor and kill the mDNSResponder process teh error stops - until I reboot.

I captured this from the mdns process before killing it... does this help anyone?
I have also - disabled time synchronization with time.apple.com and enabled DNS relay on my router to see if any of those had anything to do with it. So far... not!

• Leopard; "router returned bad address"

i put on my screensaver and was getting ready for bed, when the processor fans started firing up again. the only app i had open was iChat, and it wasn't using anything substantial in terms of CPU. activity monitor showed the same.
until i opened up console and found this message over and over again:
29/10/2007 01:08:04 mDNSResponder[23] handleLNTGetExternalAddressResponse: Router returned bad address
29/10/2007 01:08:04 mDNSResponder[23] Error getting external address 3
see here for a screencap. google/apple discussions provided little to no insight.
lather, rinse, repeat. this happens every 8 seconds or so. what's going on? i have an airport express bridged from a linksys router, and i've never had an issue with it before. resetting both didn't help, firmware's up to date.
any insight would be extremely helpful.

Maybe its not your router, maybe its mDNSResponder itself..... It doesn't seem to me like a router would randomly begin to hand out bad network addresses unless your access was rejecting itself (ex. your saved password was wrong because you changed the password on another machine and didn't replace the old one in the keychain), or if you were getting DDoSed (Denial of Service attack, which executes malignant code on your system in order to crash/shut it down).
UPnP??? Thats required for certain network access...... Not sure what would be affected off the top of my head though, I guess... you'll just have to wait and see.
Are you absolutely sure your not getting these errors anymore with UPnP disabled?

• No Return Label for Router return

I received a new router for my broken one. I am suppose to return the old one with in 7 days. Do not know where to send it, since you did not send me a prepaid return label.

How old is your current router? Have you tried asking Verizon to send a return label, letting them know of the situation (in case they did say you will absolutely be billed for non-return)?

• ROUTING: return driving directions defaults to true

Hi.
We use Oracle Spatial 10gR2 for routing Europe.
We solely use tables EDGE, NODE, PARTITION and neglect table SIGN_POST. When sending a request with return_driving_directions = "true" or the attribute not even set, I get the following exception:
<RoutingEngineException>
[REE-0108: SQLException caught while trying to call SDO_ROUTER_PARTITION.get_edge_info: [ORA-00904: "FROM_EDGE_ID":
ungltiger Bezeichner
ORA-06512: in "MDSYS.SDO_ROUTER_PARTITION", Zeile 1649
ORA-06512: in Zeile 1
</RoutingEngineException>
This obviously has to do with the empty SIGN_POST table. A simple return_driving_directions="false" in the request helps. Maybe ORACLE could change the default to be "false" in a later release???
Cheers
Sebastian

Database is good for handle large amount of data with fairly simple queries.
But SQL is not deigned to handle iterative/recursive analysis like network or graph analysis. These types of analyses usually are computation expensive. NDM java API is designed to conduct network analysis in the middle or client tiers in a generic way for network applications.
The NDM LOD(load-on-demand) Java API is the core API for network analysis. It contains many modeling features and analysis functions to make customization easier.
It provides network constraints to guide analysis w.r.t. business/application logic. It also supports user-defined cost calculators that models analysis preference/penalty. Application attributes can be defined as user data and associated with network elements (nodes/links) in network constraints or cost calculators. Most common network analysis functions are supported in the API so users can focus on their business logic/rules.
There is a PL/SQL API which is a set of java stored procedures based on NDM java in-memory API (to be deprecated). The PL/SQL API is limited (scalability and performance) by the JVM in Oracle database.

• WRT160Nv2 Firmware upgrade fried my router, returning to store.

I was upgrading my firmware to the new 2.0.0.3 because it couldn't do much worse. I was wrong. 12% into my upgrade it crashed and never came back up. I have done every reset out there and customer service helped me through them all again and has given me a case number in case I need it for the return. Good luck everyone. (Modem was less than 60 days old)

CISCO should put a warning to no updating by wireless.
Now i'm stuck with a jammed wrt160nv2.

• Security (Console log entries)

The following entries appear repeatedly every few seconds in my Console log:
10/29/07 12:24:56 PM mDNSResponder[16] handleLNTGetExternalAddressResponse: Router returned bad address
10/29/07 12:24:56 PM mDNSResponder[16] Error getting external address 3
My D-Link router is performing properly and I have no problems with the network connections between my two computers or my Internet connections.
I found four technical documents that reference mDNSResponder issues but they pertain mostly to Apple Security issues and do not suggest what might be causing the repetitive log error entries.
Any suggestions other than to just forget that I ever saw these log entries?

I did a state dump for mDNSResponder (sudo killall -INFO mDNSResponder) both before and after killing and restarting the process (sudo killall -KILL mDNSResponder). Then offender appears to be in this area:
Oct 30 19:59:15 MaxG5 Unknown23: NAT Traversals
Oct 30 19:59:15 MaxG5 Unknown23: 0080A21C UDP Int 4500 Ext 0 Err 0 Retry 822 Interval 900 Expire 0
Oct 30 20:02:01 MaxG5 Unknown355: NAT Traversals
Oct 30 20:02:01 MaxG5 Unknown355: <None>
Note the number of retries and the expire value.
After killing and having the process restart itself, the messages in the log go away. The NAT Traversals values in the mDNSResponse state appear to be gone as well.

• Data dependent routing

Hi all,
We would like to overwrite the routing function for FML32 buffer in tuxedo 9.1. The question is that it seems that the only way is defining a new type of buffer, and set the new function there. But also, we can'f find information about how to call the right server before, in the same transaction..
Also we've heard that in tuxedo 10g you can define your own routing funcion. Is that true? any place where we could find more information about this issue?.
Regards.

Hi!!!
first of all thanks for your responses!!
In fact we have our database partitioned that way. We have oracle RAC and when different instances access to the same data we have many traffic that we need to avoid.
So we have several instances of our servers in different groups each one connected to different instances of oracle rac.
Each instance will allways access the same partitions. For example:
INSTANCE0 - >PARTITION 0 AND 4 -> in this partition we have users like mod (user, 8)=0 or 4
INSTANCE1 -> PARTICION 1 AND 5 -> in this partition we have users like mod (user, 8)=1 or 5
INSTANCE2 -> PARTICION 2 AND 6 -> in this partition we have users like mod (user, 8)=2 or 6
INSTANCE3 -> PARTICION 3 AND 7 -> in this partition we have users like mod (user, 8)=3 or 7
we need to route all request for users that mod (user, 8) -> 0 or 4 -> to TUXEDO GROUP that connects with instance 0, and so on.
We thought about the solution proposed by Malcom Freeman, but in our case we can't force our clients to change their systems and perform the mod operation. We are also considerating the opcion of moving our code to a new server such as:
SERVER_CALLED_BY_OUR_CLIENTS
{ do nothing but calculate mod()
call NEW_SERVER_WITH_NEW_FIELD_FOR_ROUTING
But we already have many servers and many services.. and we are trying to avoid this opcion
Now we are trying the overwriting option. For this we tryed that, if we change the routing function in FML buffer like:
"FML32", /* type */
"*", /* subtype */
1024, /* dfltsize */
_finit32, /* initbuf */
_freinit32, /* reinitbuf */
_funinit32, /* uninitbuf */
_fpresend32, /* presend */
_fpostsend32, /* postsend */
_fpostrecv32, /* postrecv */
_fencdec32, /* encdec */
_newrouting, /* route */
and we do:
int _newrouting(char routing_name, char service, char data, long len, char group)
userlog ("calling new routing");
return froute32 (routingname, service, data, len, group);
It works (also we get our trace in ULOG). So we are trying now to get de routing field from data, and convert it and after that compose de buffer with new data to call _froute32... we hope that should work, but now we have some problems trying to get routing config from ubb (we're using MIB) to know the field we have to extract from buffer...The fact is that first we thought that in data we'll get the user, but it seems to be a bit complicated.
Regards

• 2951 Branch Location - Need VPN failover Route to Corporate office

I need some assistance understanding and configuring a failover VPN route from a Branch location to our Corporate office.
Branch location has MPLS connectivity to Corporate office and I am looking for a solution that in the event that MPLS route is down the VPN route will be used.
I will follow up with a Config post for current reference.
Phil

Hi Phil:
Usually, the best practice is to set a floating static route to your Internet VPN tunnel interface with a higher administrative distance than the routing protocol you're using for your MPLS VPN. When the routing fails on your MPLS, the static route takes over and allows your VPN to operate until the MPLS route returns.

• Bricked Router

I think I have bricked my router, I tried to install the latest firmware the completion bar finished but then the power light did not stop flashing. I have tried a method mentioned on this site (Linksys Forums) with no luck. I have a WRT54GX4 wireless router. Any Suggestions, I just bought the router.

If you have just bought the router, return it to the shop. That's far easier and better than trying to debrick the router. If you had a problem with the firmware upgrade it may well be some more serious hardware issue with the router (like a bad flash memory which tends to flip bits...). Thus unless you have picked the wrong firmware file or interrupted the firmware upgrade process or similar it would point to some hardware issue. Better exchange the router now.
If you have already tried the tftp method then there is probably little hope. You can do a last check which is not mentioned on the website:
Wire a computer with a static IP address 192.168.1.2 and subnet mask 255.255.255.0 to a LAN port of the router. Open a command prompt window and enter "ping -t 192.168.1.1". Leave it running. The pings probably all time out. The router has power. Press the reset button for 30 seconds. Do you get any ping response at any time during or after the reset? Please try that multiple times.
Also try to unplug the router from power. Wait a moment and plug it back in. Do you get any ping response now? Again, try this multiple times.
If you don't get any response at any time then the router is dead. AFAIK there is nothing you can do to get the router back alive without opening the box and messing with the hardware directly. As you have just bought the router that would definitively void your warranty thus don't bother.
If you get a response at some time during reset or power-up then there is a slight chance that you may be able to run a tftp upgrade right at the time when you get the response. Obviously that is a little tricky and a timing issue. You would have to prepare the tftp command on the computer so that you only have to press enter to start it at the moment when the ping response. You may have to try multiple times again until you really find the right moment. But it may as well not work at all. There is no guarantee that your router really accepts any tftp upgrade during boot.

• Symptoms: Freeze. Dots appear. Fine in Safe Mode

Hardware Overview:
Machine Name: iMac G5
Machine Model: PowerMac8,2
CPU Type: PowerPC G5 (3.0)
Number Of CPUs: 1
CPU Speed: 2 GHz
L2 Cache (per CPU): 512 KB
Memory: 1.5 GB
Bus Speed: 667 MHz
Boot ROM Version: 5.2.5f1
Computer is almost exactly 4 years old at this point.
Ok, Just want some clarity here.
I can start up my computer and it runs fine in safe mode. No problems other than the restrictions safe mode imposes. All my external devices run.
When I restart normally I get a varying amount of time before a freeze occurs. Sometimes I'll start all the way up and be fine for a minute or 2. Sometimes it freezes at the login screen. Sometimes it freezes at that first loading bar, or even a couple of times at the initial blue screen.
When I say freeze everything stops. No dock, no key commands. I can however still move the cursor around the screen. Can't do anything with it, but it moves with my Wireless Logitech mouse, and Wacom Tablet.
When it stops in the initial start up phase the freeze is usually accompanied by some sort of weird screen artifacts. They look like 4x4 pixel dots of odd colors. 1 to 6 of them. I don't remember getting these if I've gotten all the way logged in.
I've had some problems in the recent past with my SMU. And had to cut down on the number of devices I have plugged in at any one time. Mostly a firewire issue. I thought I had achieved a balance. All of them seemed to work fine until these freezes happened in last couple of days. And again they work right now in safe mode.
I've repaired permissions (using Disk Utility)
I've run all the maintenance scripts (using Janitor)
I cleared the caches (using Cache Out X)
And I've run Preferential Treatment
I've been hearing video card a lot but these symptoms seem unique and didn't want to jump the gun.
Thanks in advance Adam.

I booted off my install disk. Repairing the disk found nothing. But I tried to start up normally just to see. Here's the System Log from the console.
Narration will be seperated by dashes. Times are my best guess against a timesheet I kept with pen and paper.

Restarted the computer. It stalled on a the blue screen at ≈ 20:56. I forced restart into safe mode at 21:21. After about 25 minutes waiting on the blue screen.

• Start Up: Apple Screen...Spinning Gear

Issue: After I switch on power, my iMac remains on the light gray logo screen with a continuously spinning icon.
I've read a lot in this section and have tried unplugging all cables; using install disk to check hardware and repair disk (no problems, but can't get disk out). Nothing has worked so far...any suggestions? Thanks much!

Tried starting up in safe mode, after 6 minutes came back with a message "You need to restart your computer. Hold down the Power button for several seconds or press the Restart button."
Same thing when I started with the option key held down.
Starting with the mouse button held down again did not eject the CD inside.
Last new software load was 15/12/08 (12/15/08 in USA)of Office for MAc
Computer was ex demo, bouight from Apple reseller 02/12/08, I think I'm taking it back.
A few days ago, when I just left the computer trying to start up for a few hours to see where it would end up, it eventually went to a black screen and seemed to run some self diagnostics. This one time I was thinking right and took a photo for info. It went into mDNSResponder, said
"Net Info connection failed for server 127.0.0.1/local"
(later)"diskOs2: Oxe00300003 (UNDEFINED)"
"localhost:/ I have no name!# diskOs2: Oxe00300003 (UNDEFINED)"
"localhost mDNSResponder: Couldn't read user specified computer name using default bMacintosh ######## instead"
"localhost mDNSResponder: Couldn't read user specified local host name using default bMacintosh ######## localb instead"
"localhost mDNSResponder: GetDNSConfig: error: dnsconfigurationcopy returner NULL"
"localhost mDNSResponder: mDNSPlatformSendUDP sendto failed to send packet on InterfaceID 01807C00 lo0/4 to 224.0.0.251.#### skt 9 error -1 errno 65 (no route to host) #######"
I don't know how much this means to someone out there, but I hope it means something to the reseller.

• No more than 1 sessions at a time are allowed. Please wait until open sessions expire.

I have been unable to log into my Actiontec MI424WR router this week, The router returns the message "No more than 1 sessions at a time are allowed. Please wait until open sessions expire." every time I try to log in. This has been going on for days. Even pulling the power to reboot it did no change. I'm the only user in the household that would log into it, so I don't understand how this could occur. How can I get in?
GLN2

I really don't want to do a hard reset as I have a handful of custon port forwarding rules that I had created. I'm not a wiz at that, so it would take me too much time to re-create! I may have no choice. Next time I can get in I will try the backup of the config file. I hope it contains the port forwarding rules.
The backup function should work fine, I have used it to save my Steam port forward rules to my hard drive, after a pin hole reset I was able to restore successfully. I did configure mine to 1 session & ALWAYS logout when I am done. I have never had any problems logging into the router. But in your case you may need more than 1 session allowed.
Are you using a native or 3rd party app to remember your router ID/password? IF you are do not do this, you are "defeating" the built in security of the router

• WRT160Nv2: no internet after upgrade to 2.0.03 build 007

hi,
Recently I've expanded my home-network (2 wireless netbooks) with 2 wired pc's. Since then, the internet connection sometimes fails. Vista (on one of the wired pc's) reports it cannot reach the dns-server. I was using a WRT160N v2, firmware 2.0.02 build 011.
Linksys offers a newer version of the firmware: 2.0.03.007.
I've tried to upgrade the firmware a few times. The upgrade seems to happen without any problems. Every time, the connection between the pc and the router returns, but the connection between the router and internet fails.
I've tried hard-resetting the router, turning the router on and of, but the internetconnection doesn't return.
A downgrade from 2.0.03.007 to 2.0.02.011 solves the problem with the internetconnection, but the dns-issue returns...
Anyone with the same experience? Any thoughts? Thnx,
erik jan
the netherlands

Binky,
Thanks for your reaction. I'm sorry if I wasn't clear, but the router is up and running again, after the downgrade (although the internet connection is sometimes intermitted, as described before)..
It's just that I would like to upgrade, to maybe solve the intermitted internet connection, only thing is that after an upgrade, there is no internet connection at all..
I've entered all the settings, even loaded a previously saved config-file, but no luck...
regards, erik jan

• Wrt54gs v6, ping timed out

hi.
i've bought wrt54gs v6 (upgraded to v1.50.9 firmware) 2 weeks ago and had several problems with it, most of them are solved by now but still 1 left, a very annoying one.
It occurs every few hours - i cannot open the setup page (or it takes ages to open) nor ping the router (returns 'timed out' info), at the very same time my internet connection seems fine (might be a bit slower, but it can be only impression, i haven't actually checked it), and i can ping other computers in my network. After reseting router everything goes back to normal for another few hours, or few minutes sometimes. I tried nearly everythink to solve it, contacted linksys online support, gone through few forums and didn't succeed to solve it.
I've got 4 computers in my network (3 wired and 1 wireless), all running win xp, no firewall is installed on my comp.
Did anyone have similar problem? Is it something wrong with my configuration or can it be the router itself?
Thanks for help.

Well I'm not a professional and I don't own the same router as you but it seems to me it's a download issue. Is it possible you have someone sucking the life out of your internet connection?
I have the exact same issue with a roommate of mine and the reason for the internet being slow and pretty much non-existant is because of BitLord, BitTorrent, UTorrent and any other programs that use multiple ports.
If the version of WindowsXP they minimized the avalible ports that used to be avalible in Windows2000 and earlier versions. In doing so there are fewer ports and more activity on these ports.
But in the end if someone is using BitTorrent in your home they are sending out multiple packets and the outside world is sending multiple packets to your door step. Now if you want good download speeds with BitTorrent you have to open the floodgates and allow people to upload from your machine too. That is the beauty of BitTorrent. However, in doing so your router is bottlenecked and hense you have no internet.
Hope this helps you find your problem.

• Verbose mode ****

So it all started a while ago when sleep mode only lasted for 10 seconds after I upgraded to 10.4.9. I read that this was a common problem, so I just shut down at night. About a week ago, the computer kept booting from the gray Apple boot screen straight to the Blue Screen of Death: "You need to restart your computer". Kernel panic. Yay. Always a code 14: page fault.
So I swapped the ram but nothing changed, and I could boot into OSX fine occasionally. No Disc Utility noticed anything wrong. Then yesterday my MBP quit recognizing my external hard drive. I can use the hard drive with Windows machines and my iMac G4 just fine. I've tried to boot in safe mode, but while holding down shift, the gray screen just stays there spinning forever. I can't boot into open-firmware either.
When I put the install disc in and held down C, I got a kernel panic message that said Unable to find driver for this platform : “ACPI”, and now my computer is in verbose mode telling me all kinds of awful things about the mDNSResponder, and " I have no name!#"
I'm fine with backing up my data and reformatting if that's what it takes - but since the MBP won't recongize the hard drive I can't do that. I want to take it to the genius bar tomorrow and see if they can figure out what in the world is going on.
Here's some stuff verbose mode is putting out right now:
mDNSResponder: GetDNSConfig: Error: dnsconfigurationcopy returned NULL
configd[257]: No AirPort Driver found.
configd[257]: LINKLOCAL: inet6attachinterface(en0) failed, File exists (17)

Furthermore, the PRAM reset command won't even load the gray Apple before it restarts (maybe that's normal). I managed to get into Hardware Test mode by holding D.
