MDNSResponder has to be reloaded after reboot

Hey All -
I'm running Snow Leopard (10.6.8) and the first time I restarted after the last update, my DNS was broken. Both ethernet and Airport showed that they were connected and had IP addresses, but DNS can't resolve anything. I could access nothing on the internet. If I unload and load mDNSResponder (i.e. launchctl unload /System/Library/LaunchDaemons/com.apple.mDNSResponder.plist, then run load), everything works fine.
If I re-boot, I have to do that unload/load dance all over again. Any ideas on how to fix that?
joe

Why not just try different DNS servers?  For example OpenDNS (208.67.222.222, 208.67.220.220) or Google DNS (8.8.8.8, 8.8.4.4).

  • Lion takes 15 seconds to log in after reboot on Macbook Pro 13" (early 2011)

I have been having sluggish performance (repeated beachballs, etc.) on my Macbook Pro 13-inch (2.7 GHz Intel Core i7, 4 GB RAM), which I bought this summer pre-installed with Lion.
I didn't migrate my old system, I just installed everything on my new machine. After about 9 years of OS X upgrades on various machines, I decided to start fresh and just installed my applications and transferred the data manually. It took some time, but I wanted it lean and clean.
Within weeks though, things were starting to slow down. This morning, it took over 15 seconds after reboot before I could even log in to my user account (I clicked on the icon for my account, and after 4-5 seconds it beachballed for 10 seconds before the field for the password "slid" into place).
I've tried checking and unchecking having Lion restore my previous session before rebooting; closing all applications before restarting; not closing applications before restarting. But consistently, right after logging in for several minutes, and then after several hours of use (and/or the next day, if I put my laptop to sleep instead of shutting it down) opening, saving documents, viewing mailboxes after opening Mail, or even viewing folder contents in the Finder can take from several to 30+ seconds.
Here is the log from my most recent boot. I have Dropbox, LogMeIn, Default Folder, and Growl (the pre-App Store version), and I have Parallels (which I very rarely use), but I don't see why any of these would slow down my machine before I even log in. Besides this, I have pretty standard fair applications. I would very much appreciate any help/advice!

After biting the bullet and ordering more RAM, my computer now is working a ton better. So that must have been the main issue. With 8 GB RAM, I can now even run Parallels fluidly (better than my work PC!) where before simple things like logging in to my MBP after reboot could take forever.
The place I went to had several other people getting RAM upgrades at the same time as me, so between this and other comments I've seen in discussions here and elsewhere on the Internets, I take it to mean that either Apple should bump up the base RAM on its new machines, and/or stop charging so much for additional RAM.
I refused to believe a Pro machine bought with Lion installed would come with too little RAM for light to medium usage, but it was apparently the case. I'll mark this as a correct answer and hope some other poor soul will come across this thread and be helped by it.

Every time I ask Siri to find something near me, she says that she cannot find my location because I need to turn on location services in the settings menu and in siri. These are both on, and after rebooting my phone it still doesn't work correctly. How do I fix this?

No, the app does not have to completely restart. It gets shifted in its open state into storage. Similar to how a computer uses the hard disk when it has insufficient memory.
What complicates things is that sometimes memory does not get returned for reuse when you close an app. Thus yo should periodically double click the Home button and "delete" unnecessary apps from the multitasking dock and power off and then back on the iPod.

  • Whilst connected to internet itunes will only open once after rebooting and thereafter it will not open again until reboot. When reboot with internet off itunes will open repeatedly. Help

This problem has only appeared in the past few days before that I had nio problems with itunes. Firstly I discovered that I could only open Itunes once after reboot - thereafter it would not reopen until I reboot again.  I have spent considerable hours yesterday talking to the Apple help by phone and tried all there suggestions including of course reinstalling itunes amongst other things.  Eventually I thought the problem had been solved when I discovered that I could suddenly open Itunes repeatedly without rebooting.  After a short time I then discovered that the reason it was working agai was that I had rebooted with the internet disconnected and itunes would open repeatedly as normal provide I left the internet disconnected.  When I reconnect to internet the problem resurfaces. HELP

For those still wondering how to install ios 6.1 on 5th gen iPod, you need to download it off of apples official website and then shift click restore from backup and choose the downloaded ios 6.1
apples one year warrant covers any hardware problems like these right?

  • MSI K9A2GM - RealTek Randomly Installs After Reboot

Someone here must've experienced this, I have an MSI K9A2GM and first let me say it's abit sad. The VGA slot feels very weak and like it would break right off if I pushed hard enough, it's only held on by some weird thin wires that connect to the PCB, pretty bizarre design if you ask me. Then the HDMI port really seems like it's weak, I mean I bought an adapter for DVI-HDMI but it's rather large so adds weight, I sure wouldn't wanna keep that baby plugged in for any length of time it'd probably weigh down that HDMI port and snap it right off! But regardless of these issues I have one more pressing:
I've noticed that when I reboot the RealTek Audio drivers sometimes randomly reinstall themselves. It's basically like Vista is detecting the onboard audio as if it were never installed in the first place. Now do you think it's a problem with Vista or with the motherboard itself? I've no idea how to tell and I did a burn-in test using Sisoft Sandra which basically the system remained stable for 2 days. It's only after rebooting sometimes that this occurs :/
I mean ugh, it's weird huh? Imagine installing the drivers then some reboots later finding they're being reinstalled for no real reason you know of :S Vista says it detected new hardware.... so which is the culprit?
I downloaded the newest ones off RealTek but am almost positive this'll continue to happen until I find out what the real reason behind it is.

    Pictures below
As you'll see the connections for the VGA and HDMI are really not that great. I mean listen if you mount this mobo in a case then install a DVI-HDMI adapter just how long do you reckon the port would hold up to that kinda weight? But even with that look at the VGA, it's suspended in air an if you see it's done with
wires of some sort. The thin wires allow it to move but when it moves you can see the base connection slightly change as it's pushed. I mean come on now what is this 3rd grade? My friend has a PC mobo that's gotta be hundreds of years old but his VGA connection has held up to anything he's done. I can imagine a gamer taking his new rig somewhere with a LAN boy case, then he'll goto plug in the VGA adapter and push a little to hard, bam those back wires snap or heck the things base connection just snaps right off. I mean give me a break!

  • Space bar leaves ghost spaces after reboot???

    This is STRANGE.
Not sure if this is the right forum thread.
I have a USB Apple Keyboard (aluminum) I bought in March 2009 for my MBP 15" (C2D, late 2006, 2.33MhZ). It has worked fabulously (I had to get used to it; I used to like the MBP keyboard for typing, but now I hate it!). Suddenly today, the *space bar* on the USB kb just doesn't work anymore. I typed in Safari, Nisus Writer Pro, but the space bar on the USB kb will not work (all other keys work, and the spacebar on my MBP works). When I fixed permissions (the keyboard is immaculately clean), and rebooted, nada. When I tried to reset the PRAM (googled), nada. However, right after reboot, when I opened safari, and clicked in the search field, *all the spaces I tried to type BEFORE the reboot appeared*! Like a player piano, the spaces were being typed out, the spaces that I *had already typed*—but which never appeared—until now, AFTER the reboot. I can stop it by hitting any other key,
I can repeat this strange behavior. Does anyone have ANY advice on this?
I have latest snow leopard 10.6.1, 3g RAM (4 in slots).
    Thank you, Richard
UPDATE: It actually seems like there is something LAYING on the space bar instead. I tried to type 5 spaces, but when I rebooted, the spaces kept being typed for about 30 seconds, and then stopped. There is nothing on the space bar, however.
    Message was edited by: rvdparisdandy

Actually, now it's also some other keys plus the shift key. Shift-V doesn't work, neither does Shift-Left Curly Bracket.
    There is something really wrong!
Off to apple store equivalent (no Apple store yet in Paris)
thanks, and if anyone has any other advice

  • Printer goes offline after reboot (windows vista)

I'm running the latest version of bonjour for windows and vista is running the latest patches. Here's the problem: I can use bonjour to add my HP Laserjet with no problems and its prints perfectly. All is good until I need to restart the computer. After reboot, the printer is listed as offline and nothing I've tried can change the status. I can delete the printer and rerun bonjour and it works again until the next reboot. I don't know what changed but I use to be able to print all the time without this problem. Anyone have this problem or any solutions.
    Thanks

Same problem with here, except I've got three computers: one Mac and two WinXP (SP3) pc's. The mac has no problems but both PC's see my Canon PIXMA ip1800 as offline after they reboot. A re-run of the Bonjour setup fixes the problem until the next reboot. I've got the printer connected to an Airport Extreme Gigabit N base station. All software and firmware (on everything) is up to date. Any help would be appreciated.

  • After reboot, iMac will not connect to wi-fi automatically

I very recently purchased iMac 27" with Intel i5.  The issue is the wi-fi disconnects after rebooting the cpu.  It doesn't connect automatically to the internet.  It sees the router but I have to select it to connect.  Although there is no need for me to re-enter the SSID password, it is a small inconvenience but I do not have to do this step for my other devices, like iPad, PC, etc.  The wi-fi is there after waking up from "sleep" mode, so no issue here.  I am currently using the OS X Lion.  I also purchased the Mountain Lion but balked to install it yet because I read some reviews about it that it slows down some MacBooks (with retina).  Could Mountain Lion have solved this wi-fi issue?  Or should I take the iMac back to the store and let them fix it for me?

ML has caused more of this problem I believe.
Hi, this has worked for a few...
Make a New Location, Using network locations in Mac OS X ...
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT2712
    10.7…
System Preferences>Network, top of window>Locations>Edit Locations, little plus icon, give it a name.
    10.5.x/10.6.x/10.7.x instructions...
System Preferences>Network, click on the little gear at the bottom next to the + & - icons, (unlock lock first if locked), choose Set Service Order.
The interface that connects to the Internet should be dragged to the top of the list.
Instead of joining your Network from the list, click the WiFi icon at the top, and click join other network. Fill in everything as needed.
For 10.5/10.6, System Preferences>Network, unlock the lock if need be, highlight the Interface you use to connect to Internet, click on the advanced button, click on the DNS tab, click on the little plus icon, then add these numbers...
    208.67.222.222
    208.67.220.220
    Click OK.
    Also, turn off IPv6:
    System Preferences » Network » AirPort » TCP/IP tab » Configure IPv6
    Or whatever Interface you use.
    If not take it back.

  • Installed Arch on external usb drive: Drive errors after reboot

I installed Arch on my external usb hard drive and everything seemed to be working fine. After rebooting though, I had a bunch of filesytem errors (ext3) and the system was unstable. I am guessing that this has to do with the unloading of the usb modules at shutdown. If this happens to early, then the root drive doesn't have a chance to shutdown properly, hence the filesystem errors.
Anyone know how to solve this?
    Thanks!

EtreCheck looks at your log files for any kernel I/O errors. That is what it is reporting. EtreCheck just reports what it finds and tries to avoid judgements exception the most extreme cases. The drive might be OK. I am seeing more reports of this than I would have expected. It may just be a problem with Yosemite. It really prefers SSD disks in all cases. On my own machine, I have seen a slow external drive exhibit classic failure symptoms and sounds when connected via USB2. But then when I switched to FW800, it was fine. Other people are reporting that when they downgraded back to Mavericks, their disk errors went away.
So, I don't have a good answer for you. The drive might be bad, and it might be fine. Yosemite is definitely having problems with it. You may experience performance problems with that drive attached.

  • Hyper-V 2012 R2 - Linux Guest VLAN Settings lost after reboot

    Hi Guys,
last night a have seen a strange behavior with a Sophos UTM 9.204020 Linux Guest VM. (This VM is based on SUSE SLES v11? i think)
So i have Setup this in my home lab and experienced the same problem.
    ----Setup-----
    2 External VM Switches
Management OS is on VLAN 4093 with IP 192.168.20.1
The guest network adapter is in Trunk Mode, VLAN Tag (4093) is set in the guest OS with IP 192.168.20.100
Everything works until you kick off a reboot from the guest or hyper-v console, after the reboot you loose the connectivity on the network adapter with the vlan trunk.
If you shutdown the guest and start it everthing works again - this happens only on reboot!!
I have tried diffrent things (static mac, enable disable hardware features (vmq/offloading etc) on the vm network adapter but always the same error.
After some search on the net i have found this article: Link
This guy has the same problem with another linux vm (based on debian) his workaround was to trigger a powershell script with the eventlog after reboot of the vm, this works for me too but this must be bug?
Has anyone else experienced this problem?

  • WLAN AutoConfig Service crashes 3 or 4 times after you first login after rebooting?

    Hi,
My lenovo came with windows vista - I upgraded to 7 when I got a chance.  I have W7 Professional.  I have all the Lenovo drivers installed except access connections.  I don't like the tool.  Anyways, Windows manages my wireless adapter.  I have the weirdest issue -- right after I login after rebooting, the service "WLAN AutoConfig" crashes 3 or 4 times in sucession any time something tries to access the net.  If you restart it enough times, it eventually stays up and never crashes again until you reboot.  Also, the fancy aeropeek stuff crashes too.  The task bar becomes non-transparent.  That eventually recovers as well.
I have another t61 thru my work running w7 and it doesn't have this issue.  The difference between the two of them is mainly that it has the intel based wifi card instead of the atheros based one.
In the event log, I see:

I have cheked the device manager and under USB controllers it says that it is unrecognized deivice..I tried changing the reader, changing the port and(actually the reader is pluged in to a linksys external usb hub, but changing this to a internal port did not make any difference)  tried chagning some settings in control panel.
    1. I checked the power option of the root usb hub.
    2. Changed the driver.cab to a normal driver.cab obtained from the normal xp version. Uninstall the driver and reinstall it.
So far this hasnt been working.
I hope someone could help me with this.

After extensive tests with Win 7 Embedded and ACR122U, I can confirm the same problem. It seems that reader firmware hangs and the only way to recover is to unplug and plug again the reader. We shall repeat the tests with readers from other manufacturers.
For the tests, we use a Win7 Embedded Standard PC with an ACR122U connected. We installed and configured the ACS Monitor program to start automatically with windows. We made a small utility to restart the PC every minute and we placed it on the Startup directory.
Within the first 5-10 reboots, the reader fails and the ACS monitor program shows " No reader connected" and no reaction from the reader. If we shall unplug and plug the reader again to the USB port everything works fine again.

  • 2011 MBP (10.8.4) freezes exactly one hour after reboot

    Hello,
I'm having an issue identical to this poster insofar as I can tell, but some test results are different for me. Exactly one hour after rebooting or starting the computer, applications become unresponsive, video stops playing, then a little while later sound stops playing, and the cursor becomes a beachball if interacting with an application. Some windows can still be dragged or brought to the front of the screen for a short time. Eventually everything (except sometimes the cursor) is frozen and the machine never recovers from this state (for at least 15 minutes, I haven't let it go longer).
Most of the time this is accompanied by a CPU use spike and the fans spinning up, but not always. I have trawled through the system logs and disabled lots of LaunchAgents to no avail, so let me just list a few things I've tried and their result.
    Disabling wifi: no change
Removing RAM one slot at a time: no difference
Memtest: clean results, froze after 1 hour anyway
Apple Hardware test: clean result on extended test, progress *sometimes* halts at the end of the third or fourth pass after the "Main Logic Board" test had finished (during message "Testing in progress... Extended testing in progress").
System console/system.log shows no distinctive output immediately before freeze, unless I'm doing other things like playing audio or using the internet in which case the wifi interface has activity or CoreAudio turns outputs on, but this is different every time it crashes. I did find that GoogleSoftwareUpdate was implicated in one of the console logs, so I disabled and uninstalled that without effect. I recently started using Time Machine on an external drive, so I disabled that and removed the drive I'd selected from Time Machine preferences - no improvement.
While watching Activity Monitor during one freeze, I saw that cprefsd (root) had spiked to 260% CPU usage, fseventsd (root) to 128%, and several other processes to 100% (UserEventAgent, cprefsd, iTunes Helper, and apsd (root)). Everything else was at 1%.
Symptomatically, this appears to be a software issue (not an instant crash, elevated CPU usage, regular timed interval), but I've been unable to isolate the cause. I strongly suspect Time Machine is responsible (fseventsd is linked to it) but having disabled it in System Preferences I'm not sure if it should be eliminated. Alternately I believe this may be symptomatic of logic board, memory controller, or graphics card failure, but am at a loss to explain the regular (non-random, non-usage-dependent) occurrence. I performed the syslog test prescribed by Linc Davis in this thread and found only regular shutdown codes, so that also seems to point to software issues.

This morning I tried leaving the computer on in Safe Boot mode and the freeze occurred on schedule, with the windows becoming unresponsive at 60 minutes in, and the the beachball appearing as soon as I moved the cursor.
If I can get a full backup sorted (only essential stuff is cloned right now), I'll try a clean install of OS X from the recovery partition to see if it nixes whatever process is at fault. I have an appointment with the Genius Bar tomorrow evening, but if this is really a software problem then I'm not sure how they can help (except to replace it at cost). Are there any other tests or fixes I can try? What's the likely prognosis?
Thanks a lot for your help.

Apple replaced the logic board and the fix and it didn't fix the problem. To their credit, they refunded the repair fee. I ended up tracing the issue to a third-party drive I'd bought from NewEgg, a Crucial M4 SSD, which had a very peculiar firmware bug:
Correct a condition where an incorrect response to a SMART counter will cause the m4 drive to become unresponsive after 5184 hours of Power-on time. The drive will recover after a power cycle, however, this failure will repeat once per hour after reaching this point.
I would have probably gotten the update notice had I purchased direct from Crucial (or had it come pre-installed if I'd bought it a month later). If you have a similar issue, check your drive firmware!
