Mdnsresponder Process

Hello,
I've noticed a process which is continually running in my Activity Monitor called mdnsresponder. The strange thing about this process is that the user which mdnsresponder is running under is "_ mdnsresponder" (with an underscore to the left of it). I always thought that the user should be root for this process (it runs under root on our PowerBook G4/667 running Mac OS X 10.4.11). I've never noticed this until today and unfortunately, I read something on the Internet (in trying to research this process) about someone who thought they had been hacked since the user which mdnsresponder was running under was not root.
The same thing is happening with the process WindowServer. The user it is running under is "_windowserver" (with an underscore to the left of it). Not root. All of the other processes running in my Activity Monitor either belong to the user root or, to my user name (with the exception of the process distnoted which belongs to the user "daemon").
Does this make sense under Mac OS X Leopard 10.5.6?
What is mdnsresponder for? It is continually running on my iMac 3.06 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo now. The only thing I have recently changed on my iMac is that we just started sharing a USB printer on our network (which of course, is connected to my iMac) - could this be why mdnsresponder is always running? There are also two smbd processes running on my iMac which I don't quite understand.
These processes are confusing and I get worried sometimes that there is a virus or a trojan on my iMac. I had to open one port (5190) in our router/firewall in order to get iChat to work properly and I'm a bit worried about this since I also had to turn the ping feature of the router back on in order for iChat to work as well.
Thanks for any info you can provide.

Thanks for your reply and also for the link. I looked at all the info but I still don't know why the smbd process is running on my iMac. I'm not using Bonjour at all (unless printer sharing uses it somehow) and we have nothing to do with Windows computers on our network. All services are OFF except for printer sharing in my Sharing preferences.
Interestingly, after my post - I re-booted my iMac and noticed that mdsresponder wasn't active (I use Little Snitch and can tell when it's actually "in use" by seeing the processes up in the top right corner of my screen that Little Snitch displays - what a superb utility Little Snitch is, by the way). As soon as I logged in to this forum to reply to your message, voila - I see mdsresponder running.
But I still don't understand why the "user" displayed in the Activity Monitor is "_ mdnsresponder" and not "root". I guess maybe this is just a change made in Mac OS X Leopard 10.5.6? mdnsresponder runs under "root" in Mac OS X 10.4.11 on our PowerBook G4/667.
Overall - I guess this is nothing to be overly concerned about. I'm just curious to know if other Mac OS X 10.5.6 users out there notice that mdnsresponder runs under the user "_ mdnsresponder" rather than "root"?
Thanks again for your help.

  • Syslogd using 100% CPU logging mDNSResponder error

Hi, I have a Mac Mini (2GHz Core 2 Duo, 4GB ram and Lion 10.7.3) that I'm using as a server and home theater pc. I leave it running 24 hours a day and it hosts a Plex server, Transmission (Bit Torrent client) and time machine backups. I also run an Air Video server and Mobile Mouse Pro server (for control using my iPhone). Lately the machine has slowed to a crawl making it completely unusable until I reboot. After a reboot, it will run fine for a few days then slow again. In activity moniter, I can see syslogd using 100% of the cpu. From what I understand, syslogd is the error reporting function in the console. When I check the console, I see this message spamming 500+ times every second:
    1/28/12 2:06:35.025 PM mDNSResponder: mDNS_Deregister_internal:   21 6.8.0.E.D.5.E.F.F.F.A.C.5.5.A.5.4.3.2.1.1.F.B.2.D.6.8.1.2.0.0.2.ip6.arpa. PTR Apple-TV-2116.local. already marked kDNSRecordTypeDeregistering
1/28/12 2:06:35.025 PM mDNSResponder: *** process 14 exceeded 500 log message per second limit  -  remaining messages this second discarded ***
From what I understand, mDNSResponder is related to Bonjour and can be disabled but this is the one machine on the network that I actually want Bonjour enabled (screen sharing and transmission web ui). I have four other Macs on the network and this is the only one having this problem. I also have a jailbroken AppleTV on the network that runs a Plex client to watch my content on the other TV in the house. If I unplug the AppleTV during the slow down, it doesn't stop the spamming. I also wonder about calling it "Apple-TV-2116.local" in the console because when I ssh into the AppleTV to update apps, it's address is simply "Apple-TV.local".
I disabled sleep on the AppleTV because I thought it was getting a new address/ip everytime it woke but that hasn't stopped the issue. I googled the error and only found one other forum post regarding the issue and there was no solution. I'm tempted to take the AppleTV off the network for a week to see if that resolves the issue but it does get used fairly often and none of the other macs on the network are having problems so I think it's something specific to my mac mini.
    Thanks!

I am also seeing this problem, as of installing the brand new Apple TV.  My mac mini running 10.7 gets rate limited syslog entries, with each of mDNSresponder and syslogd taking a core, hummm....
    2012.04.14 11:50:33.024 AM mDNSResponder: mDNS_Deregister_internal:   <ipv6addr>.ip6.arpa. PTR Apple-TV-578.local. already marked kDNSRecordTypeDeregistering
Killing off mDNSResponder stops it, for a while.  I don't know what causes it to start up again.  I'd love a solution, as it looks like a bug with mDNSResponder itself, rather than a configuration issue with my mac, apple tv, or network.
Both are very plain vanilla from a config and software standpoint (no jail breaking, haxoring, etc) and updated to current versions of soft/firmware.
I don't want to disable Bonjour, I use it.  Obviously the problem is related to the Apple TV device, but according to the message above, there is some sort of internal argument about whether or not an IP v6 addr is in the correct state/workflow.  Whatevs.  I could probably disable ipv6 and forget it, but that's not really a fix, more of a field dressing.  At this point, IPv6 needs to work, bonjour needs to work, even with a misbehaving device.
Looking at the responses I'm not seeing that a community response is likely on this obscure little corner of tech.  So, what next?

  • A process called "NETserver" continually  my CPU

My Activity Monitor shows me that a process called NETserver uses just short of 70% of the CPU, and does so continuously (i.e. at least over the past hour). Another process, mDNSResponder, gobbles up another 40%, and syslogd another 40%.
Any ideas what these processes do, and whether this is OK??? The iMac gets quite hot, especially towards the upper part.
    Thanks for any pointers.
    Cheers,
    Veit

have no idea what NETserver is, but here is an article that says it is
a brother twain driver. I have a brother twain driver setup, but I don't
have any process running called NETserver.

Mac OS X v10.6 uses the mDNSResponder process for unicast DNS (Domain Name System)
functions, as well as Bonjour functions.
The syslogd server receives and processes log messages. Several modules receive input messages
through various channels, including UNIX domain sockets associated with the syslog(3), asl(3), and
kernel printf APIs, and optionally on a UDP socket from network clients.

I captured this from the mdns process before killing it... does this help anyone?
I have also - disabled time synchronization with time.apple.com and enabled DNS relay on my router to see if any of those had anything to do with it. So far... not!

  • I can't connect to Internet anymore (WIFI or Ethernet). This was working perfectly before. I don't get a proper IP address from my ADSL box and it seems there is a DNS error when accessing the Internet.

I have an issue with my MacBook pro (MAC OS X 10.8.3) when trying to access Internet. I am behind an ADSL box (Orange). I have a PC on the same LAN which accesses Internet perfectly via the same Box.
On the MAC, I have tried WIFI and Ethernet. And have same issue on both. I have checked the IP address (the ADSL box is a DHCP server) but the MAC doesn't get a proper IP and network mask I tried a manual IP address setup and it doesn't get better. I have setup the DNS servers for my Internet provider, but I get DNS error. I have tried 2 Internet browsers (Chrome and Safari), both have the same issue.
I tried to put my MAC on a different ADSL box (I have 2 acccesses with 2 providers at home) and get the same issue.
I also noticed a havy CPU load on the mDNSResponder process (at least 30%). I have restarted it, but no improvement.
Last, I have repared the permissions.
From those trials, it seems that the problem is on the Mac side. But I am completelly without any new idea, so I need help
    Thanks

Please read this whole message before doing anything.
This procedure is a diagnostic test. It’s unlikely to solve your problem. Don’t be disappointed when you find that nothing has changed after you complete it.
The purpose of the test is to determine whether the problem is caused by third-party software that loads automatically at startup or login, or by a peripheral device.
Disconnect all wired peripherals except those needed for the test, and remove all aftermarket expansion cards. Boot in safe mode and log in to the account with the problem. Note: If FileVault is enabled, or if a firmware password is set, or if the boot volume is a software RAID, you can’t do this. Ask for further instructions.
Safe mode is much slower to boot and run than normal, and some things won’t work at all, including Wi-Fi on certain iMacs. The next normal boot may also be somewhat slow.
The login screen appears even if you usually log in automatically. You must know your login password in order to log in. If you’ve forgotten the password, you will need to reset it before you begin. Test while in safe mode. Same problem? After testing, reboot as usual (i.e., not in safe mode) and verify that you still have the problem. Post the results of the test.

  • How I fixed lost airtunes and lost shared library

It happened to me over and over again. Sometimes it helped to restart AirPort Express, sometimes it didn't. Sometimes it helped to remove the preferences of iTunes, sometimes it didn't.
What helped me this time (and this was the fastest solution so far):
I KILLED the mDNSResponder process in the Activity viewer. You will need to enter your Admin password as this process is owned by root.
But on my machine it immediately brought back my Airtunes menu with my speakers in the living room and on other computers I could immediately see again the shared library.

and I can confirm this REALLY works!!!
I just now tested: AirTunes was grayed out (remote speakers could not be found)
    I killed mDNSResponder
    restarted iTunes
    voilà it's working
    for UNIX geaks:
    use:
    grep -aux | mDNS
    and then
sudo kill -9 (id of the task, second column)

  • Firefox is running but will not open even after re-installing

I have tried re-installing firefox but it still won't open. If I go onto task manager I can see that it is running in the background. I am currently using google chrome as my default browser.

I have three computers that are practicably clones of each other and the new itunes update failed on two of them but one worrked fine. Here is fix that worked for me. This fix was suggested by another member but I cannot recall or find his post. My system is WinXP sp3 with all the latest patches.
    1. Download AirPort Utility 5.5.1 for Windows http://support.apple.com/downloads/
    2. Open task Manager and stop the mdnsresponder process. The corrupted mdnsresponder will be using 50% of your cpu.
    3. Open control panel / add remove programs. Find the bonjour app and click on it.
    4. Note the corrupted version of bonjour 2.0.0.34 by clicking on the support link.
    5. Uninstall bonjour
    6. Restart Windows.
    7. Install the AirPort Utility. This will install a good working version of mdnsresponder. Restart windows again.
    8. Upon restart you will see a new the airport icon in your task tray. You can also find mdnsresponder.exe running under process in task manger with little or no cpu usage. Your bonjour app under add remove panel will now be version 1.0.106

  • I Have No Serial number

hello, i am a newbi with macs, and i was trying to install my apple care when it asked for my serial number. i read the little form, and i went to my apples info. the serial number read blank. i started to get worried, so i went to trouble shooting. they said to double click the version thingy on the first part of "about this mac." i did, nothing showed up. please help me if you can.

ds store: You mentioned outgoing packets when you start iPhoto. I just watched it, and it makes a TCP connection to configuration.apple.com. That's probably the automatic check for a new iPhoto version, which I had enabled.
Yea it does that and something else, if you have BigTop installed from the Developers Tools and set to watch the outgoing packet sizes, everytime you launch iPhoto there's all these outgoing packets...
I found out what it was, it's calling the mDNSResponder process which
The multicast DNS (a component of Bonjour/Rendezvous) responder; this advertises network services (such as AFP file sharing) provided by this computer, as well as the computer's self-chosen ".local" name.
Note: this runs under the pseudo-user "nobody" (presumably for security reasons).
(so thats who nobody is. )
    http://www.westwind.com/reference/OS-X/background-processes.html
Oh great, just broadcasts my computer name (which often has your real name when you set up Mac OS X) out in the clear whenever I take a look at iPhoto, wonderful.
So since I don't use Bonjour/Rendezvous, I told Little Snitch to block any connection using this process.
I've deleted all my Little Snitch rules, including the default ones, and now carefully only allow certain processes or applications access and then for only as long as I'm using them.
I'm experimenting with LS to see if it gives 100% complete network blockage, I had it run all night last night and found one packet leaves the machine every 4 hours or so, apparantly it's the lookupd process, which will be denied tonight.
The way I'm going, if I catch anything it can't get out or phone home unless it breaks root.
There are some other juicy things I'm finding out. Address book, the Dock, iDVD making outgoing network connections. you can read this thread

  • New router = constant activity outgoing!

I've replaced a DOA Microsoft G router, Installed a new NetGear N300 last week that generated repeated DoS Attack:STORMs and also hung occasionally - returned it - and got a Linksys E2000 today.
Both the new routers were installed and exhibited something I had never seen before using the previous setup. CONSTANT outgoing activity.
I only know this because I am running Little Snitch (an internet/network monitor program for OSX). The activity is being generated by - mDNSResponder - and outgoing to - dns-cc-lb-01.rr.com - (I recognize the last bit as being part of Roadrunner Cable - my ISP provider.)
I've tried resetting everything, restarting everything only to have it continue. It's a bit disconcerting to see outgoing data and I would like to stop it if possible. Anyone know what this is exactly?
    *A second issue*
The E2000 is a gigabit router, but when I connected it to my 10/100 wired home network - it didn't show up. Connecting directly, it works fine on Ethernet.
If I need to chuck it all and go for a new Airport Extreme to solve these issues - so be it. It's getting frustrating.
FWIW - the NetGear UI was quite good - the Linksys is poor.

This is part of OSX: I quote:
Mac OS X v10.6 uses the mDNSResponder process for unicast DNS (Domain Name System) functions, as well as Bonjour functions. Disabling the mDNSResponder process will also disable unicast DNS resolution, and without unicast DNS resolution, Mac OS X v10.6 cannot resolve hostnames such as www.apple.com.
The same article gives a method for disabling it:
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT3789
However it probably isn't actually transmitting very much information - many routers 'announce' their presence but it's only a few bytes, insignificant compared with normal traffic.
Open Activity Monitor in Application/Utilities and scroll down the list of process names to find mdnsresponder: you will see how much of your CPU it's using. Mine is currently showing 0%.

I recently loaded the most recent update for Itunes 9.1 version on 3/31. Since then, I have not been able to open my Itunes. Yet when I go to the task bar it says itunes is running in the background but there is no evidence of this. Help - I have been installing and reinstalling for the past couple of days with no luck.

  • Photos dont set right after the up date on screen

after I dated 7.0.4 the screen photos do not fit the screen like they did before the up date...I tryed everything..they worked great before the up date for the ipad

I did run disc utility off the install disc and ran disk repair on both the volume and permissions before running the verbose mode. Do you think it would make sense that I still get that corrupt mDNSResponder.plist file? Just curious.
Unfortunately, the Disk Repair feature of the Disk Utility does not necessary "fix" corrupted .plist files ... so, yes, I would think that you could still have a corrupted mDNSResponder.plist file even after running it.
Do you have any idea what that mDNSResponder.plist file may be and if it could be related to setting file sharing or turning off my firewall, both of which I did right before this problem?
OS X uses the mDNSResponder process for both unicast DNS and Bonjour functions. Unicast DNS resolution is used to resolve hostnames like www.google.com. It would be related to file sharing as it would be necessary for local host name resolution.
To boot off a clone, power-down your Mac. Plug in the clone drive, and then, power-up the Mac again. Your Mac should find and boot off the bootable clone drive.

  • Bonjour Login vs IP Login (command-k)

Our file server is 10.4.3 w/ 2GB RAM. Our clients are all G5s running 10.4.3.
I'm wondering if something is up w/ out network config. We are a small subnet on a large corp network, and lately (since 10.4.3) I have noticed a new issue, though it has been easy to work around.
Clients on the main network crash when they attemp to connect via Binjour browsing (Via the Network area of the Finder windows) but connect fine via Command-K and the IP address.
We have a second private network, (the metadata network for our Xsan) that only 2 machines use, and on this network Bojour works fine, in fact our transfer speeds are about 30% higher when we connect via Bonjour vs IP...
I'd love to get that 30% boost for my other clients, so I'm wondering if anybody has any suggestions on network configs for getting Bonjour to behave. I think it has soemthing to do w/ DNS, as previously we have seen some DNS/Bonjour related freak outs involving the mDNSresponder process when the servers have lost access tot he main corp DNS...
    any ideas???

Bonjour use IP too. Depending on your setup, subnets and such, you either have a DHCP server or use static IPs for the Xsan. I guess it might work having self assigned IP's (like 169.xxx.xxx.xxx) but I would use "real" IP's.
Bonjour use multicasts to find/present nodes/services on your LANs but if you use something like fileserver.local to mount an AFP server volume it still use TCP port 548 for that traffic.
I guess you could have some routing problems, re-using the same network numbers on more than one subnet, overlapping netmasks or some other network related problem.
That 30% speed increase must be from mounting the Xsan volume directly via FibreChannel on those computers since the metadata network only transports metadata (filelocking and such) not the actual data.
And Apple doesn't support IP over FibreChannel (yet?) so a Xsan volume is either mounted directly as a shared disc (mounting the same disc on 2 or more computers as a local volume but using the "Xsan" filesystem) or as a re-shared volume via AFP/SMB/NFS.

  • Installed Itunes 9.1 - running , but will not open...

I installed the iTunes 9.1 on my Win VISTA laptop. After the install, can no longer open Itunes. I click on the Itunes icon and nothing happens, even thought it's running. Might this have to do with Bonjour? I disabled it through the Control Panel/Administration/Services - but it still won't run.
