Mds eats more cpu even if there is no indexing at all.

Hi Guys,
I have been facing problem slow responce in macbook pro (13' , 2.5 GHZ dual core, 4 Gb RAM, mid 2012 model) and I could see mds process is taking too much cpu usage (60 to 100%), even if there is no indexing at all. The problem was there with Mountain Lion 10.8.3 as well, then upgraded to OSX 10.8.4 with hope that will sove it, but it did not.
I attached my Activity Monitor which shows more cpu usage of mds and that time no indexing also, This sluggish responce issue happens with few minutes, and during that time mds goes up. This sluggish problem kills my day to day work, every thing is **** slow now.
I read some of the discussions but nothing helped me, if any of you has the dame problem and if you solved it please help. or it would be so great if you can give me some tricks to solve this one.
Thanks....

I just spent the entire day chasing MDS running at 100+% CPU on my Early2011 MacBook Pro.
What finally SOLVED it for me was uninstalling LogMeIn.  It was auto-starting itself outside of Apple's control systems and as soon as it started MDS CPU rocketed.  As soon as I went into the LogMeIn preferences and selected "uninstall", the MDS CPU dropped back to less than 3%.
How I found it: (Presuming that the high CPU doesn't show up in SafeMode as mine didn't...)  Boot the system in SafeMode by holding the shift key as it boots up.  Log into the account that is having the problem.  Start Terminal and issue the command 'ps ax > ~/ps-output-safemode'.
Reboot the system into normal mode.  Log in to the problem account.  Start Terminal and issue the command 'ps ax > ~/ps-output-normalmode'.
Then open a second terminal window next to the first.  In one do 'cat ~/ps-output-safemode'.  In the other do 'cat ~/ps-output-normalmode'.
Stare and Compare to see what is running in normal mode that isn't running in safemode.  Hunt those apps down and shoot them all.  Reboot.  If the problem goes away, add them back one at a time rebooting between each to see which one causes the problem.

Thats strange...no, I don't think you are missing anything. Try going into Settings>General>Usage and see exactly what is taking up what space. If it shows in there that you do indeed have ther  free space, I'd try to reset the iTouch by holding down the Home Button and the on/off swithch at the same time. Ignore the "slide to power off" prompt and just wait. You will not lose any data, music or apps.
    See if that helps.

    Hi,
I have tried and confimed that you can download the previous version from some web-site about the version 10.5.1.42.
Remove/un-install 10.5.2.11 and restart your computer.
    Install the old version 10.5.1.42
and then you can find the "Devices" on the left column and showing synchronizing when you connect the cable.
    Good luck

Database Instance Using Swap Space When There is Plenty of Free RAM metalink note [ID 761960.1]
and tried the disabling the sga_max_size and memory_max_target and memory target with all different combination but no use.
We have one more box where same setup was configured in solaris platform but there the above memory parameters are not disabled but it is not using swap space it takes memry only from physical RAM
Can any one throw some lights on this issue. It wopuld be great if I come to know where the exact problem
    Thanks in advance

    Hi,
I didn't say I am not using 11gr2 memory parameters I am using all the automatic memory parameters but the thinks is as per the metalink note I tried by disabling the automatic memory parameters. but that didn't help me in preventing unnecessary swap usage. So I reverted. now it is using automatic memory parameters.
so What is the solution for this?

Open Activity monitor in Utilities, go to the CPU tab>All Processes, and note any process that would appear to be related to importing photos, such as iPhoto, and use Force Quit. This may only be a temporary fix, as it may start all over again when you reboot. If that happens, we need to do some more investigating.
Also, close all open Applications, then open Terminal in Utilities and copy/paste and hit return, then post the output of this command.

  • 3.6.11 seems to be much more cpu heavy...

After I installed version 3.6.11, Firefox seemed to run more slowly. The cpu usage spikes frequently even when I'm not on any active websites and it tends to be unresponsive when this happens.

Well, in safe mode things seem a bit better but still Firefox uses 16%-22% CPU resources when minimized doing nothing. Question is what now? Sorting out addons one by one?
Thing it that Firefox does not shows the problem immediately after restart. It takes 10-20 minutes before it starts to 'eat' my CPU resources...

  • MassStorage process eats my cpu

    Hi,
since i installed 10.4.8, my system has been behaving in a strange way. Iphoto now recognizes my firewire mass storage (160 gb hard disk on an enclosure) unit as a camera... and i notice that the MassStorage process (as i see it in activity monitor) get to use 30% or 50% of Cpu (intel imac 17 inch), until it gets stuck "not responding" and it goes up to 80%. After i kill the process, everything goes back to normal. The thing is, i use the storage devide very much, and even when the system starts i see it eating my cpu.
how can i resolve this? is there any known workaround? i dont think it is a normal behaviour, its been happening since yesterday.
    Thanks in advance.
    Alberto Rojas

Ok, so spotlight indexed my hard drive again, and i let massstorage to finish its work. I know the process is directly related to the indexing process, but i cant make it stop. The indexing setting is set to off (through terminal) but it keeps working everytime i restart, even in the admin account in my mac, and even after the process is finished. There has to be a workaround, im still looking around for answers.
thank you very much for your help.
    Alberto.

  • Conky - multiple instances, eating up CPU like candy

I run a desktop composed of xmonad, dzen2, and conky. I recently modified my conky config, and whereas previously my cpu monitor showed 0% at idle, it now shows 14% at idle. I checked htop and found that the top processes for cpu% were three instances of conky. Can anyone explain why there are multiple conkys spawned, even though my xmonad.hs file only specifies one? And which line in my conky config is taking up so much processing power?
    Here is my conkrc:
    out_to_x no
    background yes
    out_to_console yes
    update_interval 0.7
    short_units yes
    TEXT
    {${time %a %b %d %Y} - ${time %H:%M:%S}} \
    | ${scroll 12 6 $moc_artist - $moc_song} | \
    [RAM: $memperc%] \
    [CPU: $cpu%] \
    [disk I/O: ${diskio /dev/sda}] \
    [HDD: ${fs_used /}/${fs_free /} (${fs_used_perc /}%)] \
    ${if_existing /proc/net/route wlp3s0} [network: ${wireless_essid wlp3s0} (${wireless_link_qual_perc wlp3s0}%)] $else [network: -- ]$endif \
    ${if_existing /sys/class/power_supply/BAT1} [battery: ${battery_percent BAT1}%] $else [battery: -- ]$endif
my previous config was more or less the same, except that it was all on one line and it didn't have the fancy decision-making stuff thrown in. It also did not have the lovely scrolling bit for the currently playing song.
    EDIT:
That lovely scrolling bit was the culprit. Removed it. Maybe I'll put it back when I get a machine with a bigger processor. I'm all about minimizing the system's use of resources, so it might not make it back into the config, even with a better processor.
Conky is still spawning multiple instances, and I can't for the life of me figure out why.

Yes it does. And it appears that other things, such as pulseaudio --start, dbus, and a dozen other processes are running duplicates with different pids. I'm checking with atop to see if htop is to blame, but I don't think it's the program.

i had the same problem. did a lot of research..my phone became unusuable. do you use the htc mail? if so that is your problem. there is a bug with it that it keeps eating your memory until you cannot use your phone. i had to do a hard reset. back to factory condition..not happy! but then went to the marketplace and got k-9 mail. that is now my default mail program. i have not had any issues since then. this is what i kept reading over and over for complaints on this phone. it is a major glitch and the only way, as of the time it happened to me, to fix it..

Even better, check the wait events in your database and you'll know why the backup / restore is not as expected.

You don't run statspack for 24 hours, that would infact be pointless...
Run statspack for say a 10 or 15 minute window during a particular "busy" period on your database. If you run it for longer then all the useful data will have been "averaged out". You want a snapshot in time, not an average over the day.
