MDS, slow Lion and the missing memory
Hi;
Updated to Lion a week ago, and apart of a couple apps that needed to be retired (PPC), here is my dilema:
The iMac (4gb) starts to slooow down to a crawl and I cannot use more than one app at a time. Open large files in Photoshop?, forget it. I got Safari on, and iStats shows free memory just dissapearing: from 4gb to 200megs (Same for PS and iTunes). Activity confirms it,...
I'm seeing a lot of posts with the same problem, no solution.
Anybody that could help?. Thanks
Lion has sophisticated new memory management. I don't know iStat understands it. You mentioned MDS but didn't discuss it. Run Activity Monitor and see which processes are using the CPU and "Real mem".

I have OS X Lion and the messages beta on my macbook pro. When in messages, if I initiate a video chat there is no audio. I know this must be something on my end because if I'm invited to a video chat it works fine. Please help

The Buddy's Audio can get dropped completely if the speed of your Internet connections are vastly different.
For example the minimum speed for a 1-1 video chat is only 128kbps Upload (As Downloads tend to be faster).
Where I live in the United Kingdom I can only get DLS. This is further subject to the distance to the Exchange.
DLS at less than 3.5 km can be done at 20Mb at most exchanges.
At some exchanges there is roll out of some Fibre optic services.
In most larger towns and cities there is normally the option of a Cable service that offers similar figures.
In some parts of Sweden you can get 100Mbps services.
When the speed from your ISP varies a large amount then iChat will drop Frames to smooth out the Video
There comes a point when so many frames are dropped that the Audio will not make sense and will be dropped.
At about 128kbps a 5% variance will take you below the 100kbps mark (after allowing for the actual connection overheads)
At 10Mbps that 5% variance can be (in round terms) 500kbps
(A 500kbps service is itself good enough for a 4 way Video chat)
My experience is that PC users on AIM tend to only send the Pic at 10 frames a second (Fps). Any slower than this and the picture losses it's smoothness and flow.
You may see different Speeds and Frame Rates when you Call Out compared to when others Call In.
Setting the Bandwidth Limit to a lower figure such as 500kbps (fast enough for 4 way chats) may get around any variances in the speeds you see in the Connection Doctor during a live chat.

Videos with avi format do not open under Lion and receive "missing codec" message. Worked fine prior to Lion installation.

Mountain Lion fails to install saying it cannot create the recovery; I had a similar problem with Lion and the Apple Store that helped me resolve it gave me an installable version of Mountain Lion on a flash drive for my inconvenience....is there some trick I am missing or do I need to make an appointment with a genius...
I have the MacIntosh volume and the Boot Camp partition only. I know that when I installed Lion, I had to go through a whole back-up and recovery of Windows and then re-format the drive.
The tech at the Apple Store had a previous life as a MSCE and was very helpful. I believe he even said that I should not have htis problem with Mountain Lion which is why they gave me the flash with it onboard. I was in the process of starting a new job when I went to Lion, so I have waited to do this next and probably last upgrade to this old MBP since I doubt Apple will support this MBP in Maverick.
I do not have another installation, so that is not an option. I will try to create an external, I have plenty of hard drives around and see if I can get it done that way. It might take me a week or two to get back to it, but I will comment back upon completion of that effort. Thanks for your help....Dave Iverson -

4GB of RAM is not very much RAM these days particularly if you tend to have many windows open at one time. For example if you are working in Safari and have several tabs open and then work on a Photoshop project that will eat a lot of RAM. One simple way to check is open Activity Monitor (Applications - Utilities - Activity Monitor) and click the System Memory tab. Run this under typical use and check the amount of FREE RAM. It will look something like:
I can see from my example I am dangerously low on RAM by the amount of free RAM I have. I suspect if you upgrade to 8, 12 or even 16GB of RAM your machine would work much better. BTW ...my MacBook Air is limited to 4GB so it's up to me to manage my RAM better. -
How much real world performance difference would there be between the 1600MHz memory of a 4,1 Mac Pro and the 800MHz memory of a 3,1 Mac Pro? My main app is multitrack audio with Pro Tools. Thanks so much. The CPU speed of either one would be between 2.8GHz and 3.0GHz.
What are the differences.... firmware and build, there were tweaks to the PCIe bus itself. As a result 3rd party cards and booting is better.
Support in 5,1 firmware for more 56xx and W35/36xx processors. Also memory timing.
The 4,1 was "64-bit boot mode optional" and 5,1 was default. I don't know if there are changes but I assume so, even if it is not reflected elsewhere or in version number.
I don't know what the prices are but 2009, to buy one today, when the 2010 is $1800.
The 2008 of course was test bed for 64-bit UEFI and it sure seems even Lion and then ML are not as well engineered - outside of Linc who would be the least likely to have a problem.
I would assume 2010 has better support for 8GB and even 16GB DIMMs as well as for 1333MHz.
Nehalem family had only come out in fall 2008 and a lot of work went into making improvements well past 2009.
If you remember, there were serious heat problems with those and 10.5.7+ up thru 10.6.2 even with iTunes, audio, and hyperthreading and cores hitting and staying in 80*C range. That I assume was both poor code (sleep does not mean poke and ask constantly) as well as changes in SMC and kernel improvements, to work around. Microcode can be patched in firmware, kernel, by drivers and by code, but it is best when the chips and core elements don't need to be.
If someone is stretched, and can get 2009 for $1200 it might be a fine fit. That year offered the OEM GT120 which isn't really as nice and matched for today both OS and apps that rely on a GPU. And for odd reasons two such 120's don't work well in Lion+ but that is probably minor. Having the 5770 is just "nicer" though.
There are some articles about trouble booting with PCIe SATA/SAS/SSD and less trouble with 2010. Also support for graphic card and audio I think was one of those "minor" 5770 related support issues. But shows some small changes were made there too.
I wish someone would come out and pre-announce DDR4 + SATA3 along with PCIe 3.x (for bandwidth and more power per rail) along with say Ivy Bridge-E socket processors was going to be this summer's 3 yr anniversary and to replace the 2010 designed motherboard. But that is what is on Intel's and others drawing boards simmeringn in the pot. -

i am deleting files through my trash in my macbook pro (2010) and then emptying the trash can, but my hard disk space is not increasing! i recently upgraded to lion and the problem is new, wasn't the same with snow leopard! HELP!!!!!
When i press command+I (Get Info) i see that there is 140 GB "Available Space" on my hard disk but when i click on my hard disk icon on the desktop, and then press "space" i only see 102 GB free!! What the f*???

Just installed Lion and the Magic TrackPad and I am having a problem with one click commands. I have to hit the pad fairly hard with one finger to get it to accept the command. Is this normal, is there another way that I am suppose to execute commands?
No you just need to turn on Tap to Click. Go into System Preferences - Trackpad and click the Point to Click tab and select the first box which will say Tap to Click and you should be in business.
