Mdworker process - mac is very very slow, apps not responding

A couple of days a ago, I noticed there was lots of chatter coming from the hard drive.  I also noticed that the Mac Pro was very slow at doing most things, lots of beach balls and applications not responding.  Right now, all I can hear is the HDD
I opened up activity monitor and noticed that a process name called - mdworker - was using 8.83GB or Real Mem and around 11.80GB of Virtual Mem.  These figures fluctuate, the Virtual Mem has gone as high as 14GB.  Sometimes the process goes down very low to say below a GB, then rises again.
I have 10GB of ram installed inside the mac.  Furthermore, I've seen 100%of CPU use though mdworker.
I've been reading about this problem, lots of advice says to move the HDD image to the privacy pane on spotlight as this is a indexing/spotlight issue, though I still want to use spotlight.
Will this process ever end, or is there a way to stop it, as is using up all the resources?
The only thing I've installed of late is a music plug-in called Geist and an expansion pack which came with it.
Right now I can't rally use my mac like before, I'm writing this on an iPad.
Any help would be great, as the mac is integeral part of m work.

How much free drive space on the Mac?
Right or control click the MacintoshHD icon. Click Get Info. In the Get Info window you will see Capacity and Available. Make sure there's a minimum of 15% free disk space.
You can stop Spotlight from indexing >  Spotlight tips
Have you emptied the Safari cache lately? From your Safari menu bar click Safari > Empty Cache. Quit then relaunch Safari to test.
If that didn't help, back to the menu bar, click Safari > Reset Safari. Select the top 5 boxes, click Reset. Try Safari.
And try troubleshooting the Safari .plist file (preferences)
Go to ~/Library/Preferences
Move the com.apple.Safari.plist file from the Preferences folder to the Desktop.
Quit, relaunch Safari to test.
If that helped, move the .plist file to the Trash, If not, just move it back to the Preferences folder.
And try troubleshooting Safari third party plugins. Go to Safari > Preferences then select the Security tab. Deslect:  Enable plug-ins
Quit then relaunch Safari to test. If that made a difference, then you need to find the plugin(s) causing the problem >  Unsupported third-party add-ons may cause Safari to unexpectedly quit or have performance issues

  • I7 Fully loaded iMac becoming unusable slow apps not responding with Mavericks

Very frustrating. My 2012 iMac with an i7/16Gig memory is crawling with Mavericks. It didn't start out that way, but it's almost unusable now. I will get a few minutes of seeming to work fine, then periods of long lasting slowness. Evening typing an email will have a delay where typing will not come out as I am typing it for a few seconds, then it all bursts out. Simple interactions get spinning beach balls from 5-45 seconds. The activity monitor shows nothing taking any particularly large amount of processor load, memory pressure and status is all green & good. Some disk activity but nothing that should account for the lags. Loading applications, the system grinds to being unresponsive. Adobe applications and running aperture have delays in activity from 5-60 seconds in simple interaction. The activity monitor then shows several of the larger apps (iTunes, Aperture, Premiere Pro) as Application Not Responding. It can take from to 30 seconds (if Im lucky) to several minutes for the system to become responsive again. Sometimes it never does.
I have run DiskUtility /repair permissions several times with no real results. There are documented issues with Finder being slow to pull up files and directories. I ran the fix for that as well as the slow restart/bootup issues documented. Those fixes made a difference but not with the overall issue of the system just grinding to a halt.
Has anyone else seen this, any suggestions on what to do to fix it? Im spending more time fighting the computer than getting my work done.

  • Mac is running SUPER Slow, applications not responding when i open them, Beachballs everywhere

Whenever i open an application (Take Google chrome for an example) it bounces like 20+ times, then on activity monitor it says "Application Not Responding". Whenever i type too fast on spotlight or finder, my whole desktop freezes, im suspecting this can be maybe HDD failure, i have repaired my MacintoshHD probably 3 times this past week. I have 150GB free out of a 250GB hdd, and i have 4 GB RAM. PLEASE HELP! Im currently enrolled in college and this is vital and needs to be fixed ASAP.

  • Apps "not responding" and general lag

More than ever it seems apps are freezing and then the message that the app "not responding" comes up and do we want to wait or close. Is there any fix ? Also, my phone still has lag which is possibly uncurable ?  Sony making no friends here - a kitkat upgrade would be welcome but isn't coming ! One thing I did do was disable Chrome and install CM browser for android - makes searching less painful and would recommend.

You could reinstall the latest update with PCC Keep in mind that apps are getting heavier and hardware demanding, chrome its known to have an issue at the moment, memory leak, and the Xperia SP has only 1GB of RAM not an ideal combination with this latest updates on apps.

HELP!  I had iPhoto on my mac, for some reason it was not responding or damaged.   down loaded a new version but can't find my photos. any ideas please.  I thought once on the mac always on the mac.

Sorry but we need details to help
What version of the OS do you have? What has changed since iPhtoo worked?
What exactly is the problem - you say "it was not responding" - You downloaded a new version (what version)" -you can't find yoru photos" none of which is helpful
look in your applications folder - is there an Iphoto application there? If so get info and report the version
Look in the picures folder - is there an iPhoto library there? If so exactly (including exact error messages) happens if you double click on it?
what else can you tell us that might help us assist you?

  • When I have several windows open, firefox4 is slow or not responding, why?

firefox runs very slow and or does not respond.

Start Firefox in [[Safe Mode]] to check if one of the add-ons is causing the problem (switch to the DEFAULT theme: Tools > Add-ons > Appearance/Themes).
    * Don't make any changes on the Safe mode start window.
In Firefox 4 [http://kb.mozillazine.org/Safe_mode Safe mode] disables extensions and disables hardware acceleration.
Check if there is an update available for your graphics display card driver.
    * Tools > Options > Advanced > General > Browsing: "Use hardware acceleration when available"

  • DreamWeaver cc running slow and not responding on Win 7

    Hi Guys,
As of late my DreamWeaver has started not responding (eventually recovers) and is very slow to do anything. It has run fine in the past. The file I am running works fine on other PCs running the same edition of DW.
Have tried reinstalling DW and changing the antivirus permissions. Kind of stuck with what else to do.
    Thanks

Try clearing the program cache file...

  • I photo app not responding

    i photo app not responding

    Try trash the
Try trash the com.apple.iPhoto.plist file from the HD/Users/ Your Name / library / preferences folder. (Remember you'll need to reset your User options afterwards. These include minor settings like the window colour and so on. Note: If you've moved your library you'll need to point iPhoto at it again.)
    What's the plist file?
For new users: Every application on your Mac has an accompanying plist file. It records certain User choices. For instance, in your favourite Word Processor it remembers your choice of Default Font, on your Web Browser is remembers things like your choice of Home Page. It even recalls what windows you had open last if your app allows you to pick up from where you left off last. The iPhoto plist file remembers things like the location of the Library, your choice of background colour, whether you are running a Referenced or Managed Library, what preferences you have for autosplitting events and so on. Trashing the plist file forces the app to generate a new one on the next launch, and this restores things to the Factory Defaults. Hence, if you've changed any of these things you'll need to reset them. If you haven't, then no bother. Trashing the plist file is Mac troubleshooting 101.
    If that fails
    Option 1
Back Up and try rebuild the library: hold down the command and option (or alt) keys while launching iPhoto. Use the resulting dialogue to rebuild. Choose to Rebuild iPhoto Library Database from automatic backup.
    If that fails:
    Option 2
Download iPhoto Library Manager and use its rebuild function. This will create a new library based on data in the albumdata.xml file. Not everything will be brought over - no slideshows, books or calendars, for instance - but it should get all your albums and keywords back.
Because this process creates an entirely new library and leaves your old one untouched, it is non-destructive, and if you're not happy with the results you can simply return to your old one. .
    Regards
    TD

  • Snow Leopard running slow, freezing, not responding.

I am running Snow Leopard on Mac 2.4 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo with 3 GB SDRAM.
Over the last few days the machine has gradually become slower and slower, the spinning wheel frequently appears and programs are not responding and the system freezes.
When I restart, on a couple of occasions a white screen with grey pixel blocks has flashed up during start up, other times it has frozen on the blue screen.
I have tried running Disk Warrior, Disk Utility, ClamXav, Onyx and disconnected all hardware, then finally I have reinstalled Snow Leopard but still seem to be having the same problems.
By the way, I am also running VMware Fusion, don't know if this is relevant.
    Any suggestion, please?

  • Mac Book Pro Keyboard, Track pad not responding at login page

URGENT! URGENT! I´m currently in the middle of the amazon shooting a documentary and my Macbook Pro boots up to the login page but I cannot nothing appears on the login line when I type, and my track pad in not responding. Keyboard and track pad dead. However, I can hit the control-apple-power button and get the shutdown-restart-sleep sceen. I plugged in my usb mouse and that works--track pad does not.
I have rebooted, with power supply, without power supply; removed-replaced battery; still the same problem, boot to login screen--now keyboard, not track pad.
    Any suggestions?

I also have this problem. After closing my MBP to put it into sleep mode, I opened it a few hours later to resume work and the machine was locked up. I shut the machine down by holding the power key for 5 seconds. Now, every time I try to restart, the login screen appears (after a very long boot time) but the trackpad and keyboard do not respond.
My summer internship final project is due in 3 days and I am desperate. Please help!

  • HT3226 my mail will just not open, when i try to open it it just gets stuck with the mail home page half open and when i click on the icon at the bottom it says app not responding, is there anything i can do myself or is this a trip to the Apple store?

My mail app will not open at all, it just gets stuck half open and then when i go to the icon below it says the app is not responding, is this something i can fix myself?

Please follow these directions to delete the Mail "sandbox" folder.
    Back up all data.
    Quit Mail.
Triple-click the line below to select it:
    ~/Library/Containers/com.apple.mail
Right-click or control-click the highlighted line and select
    Services ▹ Reveal
from the contextual menu.* A Finder window should open with a folder named "com.apple.mail" selected. If it does, move the selected folder — not just its contents — to the Desktop. Leave the Finder window open for now.
Relaunch Mail and test. If the problem is resolved, you'll have to recreate some of your Mail settings. You can then delete the folder you moved and close the Finder window. If you still have the problem, quit Mail again and put the folder back where it was, overwriting the one that may have been created in its place. Post your results.
Caution: If you change any of the contents of the sandbox, but leave the folder itself in place, Mail may crash or not launch at all. Deleting the whole sandbox will cause it to be rebuilt automatically.
*If you don't see the contextual menu item, copy the selected text to the Clipboard (command-C). In the Finder, select
    Go ▹ Go to Folder...
from the menu bar, paste into the box that opens (command-V). You won't see what you pasted because a line break is included. Press return.

  • Preview app not responding after having multiple images open

Several images were opened using the preview app, the app stopped responding and I can't send the images to either iphoto or even delete the images.
I can force quit the program but evertime I open an image the preview app opens and stops responding. Is there anything that can be done to prevent this?

I can't seem to reproduce this with 10 connections. Can you start from a console and post a stace trace?

  • My sons ipod touch stopped working no internet, apps not responding, won't turn off

His ipod stopped working properly last night. Not jailbroken, not dropped etc. I tried restoring it and it still is really slow it is connected to our wifi but wont open the internet. I cant get his apple Id to verify or icloud email account set up. Also when I go to restart the ipod the slide bar to turn off never pops up it just turns black and the apple logo appears ( the ipod wont power off now)
    Any help would be appreciated.

    Try:
    - iOS: Not responding or does not turn on
    - Also try DFU mode after try recovery mode
How to put iPod touch / iPhone into DFU mode « Karthik's scribblings
    - If not successful and you can't fully turn the iOS device fully off, let the battery fully drain. After charging for an least an hour try the above again.
    - Try on another computer
    - If still not successful that usually indicates a hardware problem and an appointment at the Genius Bar of an Apple store is in order.
