Meaning of SAP

What are Systems, Applications and Products in SAP?
Thanks & Regards
Santhosh

The original SAP idea was to provide customers with the ability to interact with a common corporate database for a comprehensive range of applications. Gradually, the applications have been assembled and today many corporations, including IBM and Microsoft, are using SAP products to run their own businesses.
SAP applications, built around their latest R/3 system, provide the capability to manage financial, asset, and cost accounting, production operations and materials, personnel, plants, and archived documents. The R/3 system runs on a number of platforms including Windows 2000 and uses the client/server model. The latest version of R/3 includes a comprehensive Internet-enabled package.

  • Meaning of SAP's 4GL-ABAP/4

    Hi All,
I want to know the meaning of SAP's 4GL-ABAP/4.
    Thanks
    Fresher

    Hi,
A fourth-generation programming language (abbreviated 4GL) is a descriptive term used for programming languages and environments designed with a specific purpose in mind, such as the development of commercial business software. In the evolution of computing (see programming language generations), the 4GL followed the 3GL in an upward trend toward higher abstraction and statement power. The 4GL was followed by efforts to define and use a 5GL.
The natural-language, block-structured mode of the third-generation programming languages improved the process of software development. However, 3GL development methods can be slow and error prone. It became clear that some applications could be developed more rapidly by adding a higher-level programming language and methodology which would generate the equivalent of very complicated 3GL instructions with fewer errors. In some senses, software engineering arose to handle 3GL development. 4GL and 5GL projects are more oriented toward problem solving and systems engineering.
All 4GLs are designed to reduce programming effort, the time it takes to develop software, and the cost of software development. They are not always successful in this task, sometimes resulting in inelegant and unmaintainable code. However, given the right problem, the use of an appropriate 4GL can be spectacularly successful as was seen with MARK-IV and MAPPER (see History Section, Santa Fe real-time tracking of their freight cars - the productivity gains were estimated to be 8 times over COBOL). The usability improvements obtained by some 4GLs (and their environment) allowed better exploration for heuristic solutions than did the 3GL.
Fourth-generation languages have often been compared to domain-specific programming languages (DSLs). Some researchers state that 4GLs are a sub-set of DSLs. [1] Given the persistence of assembly language even now in advanced development environments (MS Studio), one expects that a system ought to be a mixture of all the generations, with only very limited use of the first.
However 4GL has been dropped by SAP now...
    Cheers,
    SImha.

  • Plz:  meaning of this sentence : MDM works out of box with sap BI component

    hi
please explain me what is the meaning of :
SAP  MDM works out of box with sap BI component .

    Hi akhil,
In lines to what Simona has said, I would like to mention that SAP MDM is a different tool altogether and functions out of the box with SABP BI.
Talking a bit about the integration scenarios, SAP MDM SP04 is integrated with SAP BI 3.5 as two different tools where MDM behaves as a different tool altogether and imports the data from BI and cleanses it and then syndicates it back to BI.
In the latest integration scenario, some part of MDM can be handled from Bi itself. i.e. We can connect to the MDM SP05 Repository from BI 7.0. But still the data cleansing, deduplication is exclusively done in MDM. Hence MDM works out of the box with SAP Bi component.

  • Issue with parallel operation of SAP NW SSO 2.0 and SNC Client Encryption (Logon Groups)

    Hi!
One of our customers is using the SNC Client Encryption solution to ensure encryption using SNC (based on Kerberos Technology) for their SAP GUI Dialog connections. They have lots of SAP backends DEV, QAS, PRD all with the SNC Client Encryption SNC Lib installed. The profile parameter snc/identity/as contains the following value: p:CN=SAP/<ServiceAccount>@<DOMAIN>.
    Example: p:CN=SAP/[email protected]
The customer is using one AD Service Account "SNCServiceUser" with one registered SPN "SAP/SNCServiceUser" for all systems (yes, this is not recommended... but the case).
Important: All users use group entries in the SAP Logon (saplogin.ini). Means, for SAP logon the SNC name can not be manually configured on the SAP Front End. With group logons, the application server's SNC name is dynamically requested by the message server each time a SAP GUI connection is started. The SNC Name is greyed out in this case as dynamically obtained from the applications servers profile parameter snc/identity/as.
Now our customer implements SAP NetWeaver Single Sign-On 2.0 within his landscape. Based on the Secure Login Server 2.0 (SP3) he likes to use X.509 based authentication to his AS ABAP backends using SAP GUI SNC while others still use SNC Client Encryption.
Replacing the SNC Library on the AS ABAP
The Secure Login Library 2.0 (SP3) has been installed on one of the ABAP systems and the SNC Client Encryption SNC Library (which is based on SSO 1.0) is no longer used, thus we changed the parameter snc/gssapi_lib to point to the new SNC library. We removed the old PSE.ZIP containing the keytab and created the new SAPSNCSKERB.PSE incl. the keytab and proper credentials. To ensure parallel operation, we kept the snc/identity/as value as is =  p:CN=SAP/[email protected].
After restarting the system with initialized Secure Login Library 2.0, still the SNC client encryption works fine for existing users.
    The problem
We created on the Secure Login Server an SNC certificate for the AS ABAP which has the following X.509 Distinguised Name Fomat: CN=SAP/[email protected] This is to avoid having to change the snc/identity/as to an "real" X.509 DN which would lead to non-working SNC Client Encryption for all the other users using SAP GUI and logon groups.
As soon as we install the PSE via STRUST on the system the SNC Client Encryption solution stops working with error „Server refuses kerberos key exchange“.
As part of an pilot implementation we have installed Secure Login Client 2.0 (SP3) on some test PCs. The test PC with SLC is able to perform Single Sign-On with SNC based on X.509 (incl. Encryption) to the ABAP system.
Seems the SAP System now only tries to do X.509 based authentication thus key exchange fails. The problem is, we cannot change the snc/identity/as value because of the logon groups. If we were able to do so, we would in any case set the server identity to X.509 DN and in addition create the SAPSNCSKERB.PSE incl. keytab. This should work, as confirmed by SAP see this post.
Any ideas how to solve this and have both solutions in parallel?
    Appreciate any help.
    Regards,
    Carsten

    Hi all,
we was able to fix the issue. It was an issue with the customers cluster configuration and the  $SECUDIR variable. This tricky issue leads to non working or sporadic working SNC Client Encryption...
This was how the configuration looks before:
    Environment variable $SECUDIR is defined:
    "/ABCDEF<SID>/usr/sap/<SID>/DVEBMGSxx/sec“
    sapgenpse seclogin -l -v
    running seclogin with USER="<SID>adm"
    Credentials for username '<SID>adm':
    0 (LPS:OFF):
             (LPS:OFF): /ABCDEF<SID>/usr/sap/<SID>/DVEBMGSxx/sec/SAPSNCSKERB.pse
    1 (LPS:OFF):
             (LPS:OFF): /usr/sap/<SID>/DVEBMGSxx/sec/SAPSNCS.pse
After changing the $SECUDIR to "/usr/sap/<SID>/DVEBMGSxx/sec“ and re-creating the credentials, it worked like a charm.
As a result of this we can confirm, this configuration and SNC Client Encryption works with CommonCryptoLib in parallel to the SSO configuration.
And Valerie was right with 2. SLC starting from V. 1.0 SP2 PL3 was able to convert the CN= part of the SNC Name into an SPN, was my mistake. In addition SNC Client Encryption starting from Version 1 SP1 PL1 does this also.. just to make this clear
Thread closed hope this helps someone

  • Data transfer b/w SAP to Java using IDOC and Interface SAP Jco

    Dear Experts,
The challenging requirement we are having is, we need to create the interface for data transfer between SAP system and the Java system. The data will be transferred from SAP to java and similarly once some processing done in Java again the details needs to be transferred from Java to SAP.
For this data transferred we are planning to use IDOC process and for interface "SAP Java connector (Version 3.0.5)" we are planning to use. As per our understanding, from Java side one program needs to be written to connect with SAP as "Registered program". This registered program will appear in SAP GATEWAY automatically and using tRFC, TCP/IP connection both SAP and Java system will be connected.
In this case we are having some doubts.
    1. The data from SAP is going to be transfered from one Custom transaction (Z tcode). Once "Outbound IDOC" will get triggered and will carry the details. Now the doubt is, whether the data / details will get transfered to JAVA system automatically or we need to perform any other steps from SAP ABAP coding...(like converting in to flat file, XML file and etc) ??
    2. We are planning to install "SAP Jco" in Java server. Is this correct...??
    3. Other than SAP Jco any other softwares needs to be installed or not..??
    4. Since we are going to trigger the "outbound IDOC" from custom transaction, we are planning to develope one program in SE37. Other than this any other program we need to develop or not..??
    5. Any sample Java program for the SAP Jco version 3.0.5 to create the "Registered program" with SAP..? (e.g. SAP Listener program).?
If anybody has detailed steps or explanation please share it with us.
    Thanks in advance
    Warm Regards,
    VEL

    Hi All,
For the above mentioned issue, we implemented JCo software in JAVA system and created the JAVA program including SAP logon credential details like Client, User name, password and Language details.
When this JAVA program was compiled successfully then, that non SAP system will appear in SAP gateway Tcode.
Once non SAP system started appearing in SAP gateway that means, both SAP & Non SAP are connected automatically.

  • Upgrade SAP from ECC 6.0 EHP4 to ECC 6.0 EHP7

    Dear all,
We are using ECC 6 ERP 4 SP5 with oracle 10.2g and Netweaver 7.0 EHP1.
    Other system release
    CRM 7.0 SP5 & CRM JAVA Release – NW 701 SP3
    BI Release – NW 701 SP5 BI CONT 7.04 & BI JAVA Release – NW 701 SP3
We are planning to upgrade ECC 6 ERP4 SP5 to ERP 6 ERP7 SP1, Could you please suggest for compatibility version for CRM & BI with ECC6 EHP7
And any document for EHP7 up gradation procedure and what is the impact or change made in system after upgrade from EHP4 to EHP7
    Regards,
    Ajay

    Hello
The nightmare is going on... this point has been discussed a year ago (Re: Comapatability between EHP7 and SAP Netweaver BI 7.0 EHP1) and the conclusion was that you only need to upgrade HUB satellite systems... and a BW system is not an HUB.
The only possible issue would be if the java stack of the BW system is used directly by the ECC system.
Did not find any information on the necessity to upgrade the CRM, so I think you should keep it as it is.
This are even getting worst because sometime sap support (OSS) are not able to provide clear answers (Interoperability btw ERP 6.0 EhP7 and SAP NW/BW 7.0)
    Best regards
Strategy beyond SAP Business Suite 7 Innovations 2011 - Landscape Governance - SCN Wiki
1388258 - Version Interoperability within the SAP Business Suite
In order to use the new JAVA EE 5 capabilities and benefit from the improvements of SAP NW 7.3 the version interoperability range has been moved upwards for SAP Business Suite core applications with Release to Customer (RTC) from 2013 onwards.
This means that SAP NetWeaver Systems 7.30 or higher are required if SAP Business Suite applications are based on or operating with those central Systems (Enterprise Portal, Business Warehouse, Process Integration).
Customers wishing to utilize SAP Business Suite applications with RTC from 2013 onwards, that require one of these central SAP NetWeaver Systems, will have to upgrade their central NetWeaver Systems to 7.30 or higher before upgrading e.g. to SAP Enhancement Package 7 for SAP ERP 6.0.

  • Connect a legacy system to SAP by ALE

    Dear firends,
I have a legacy system in VB for venodor details, I wish to integrate it with SAP. but don know the procedure... i feel ALE can help in this regards as i am looking for it in real time rather uploading the data by batch upload.   please explain me the process of it.. i know the configuration of ALE but don know the receiving part from the outside of SAP... please help in this regards..any article.. process, will be great help of mine..
    thanking u.
    Naim

    Naim,
ALE is specifically mean for SAP-SAP communication and NOT for the purpose that you have explained here.
In your case, from VB you can try calling a RFC function and get the required details and this can happen in real time. However, the call has to be triggered by the VB application.
You can look at these links to help you with the calls.

  • Windows Integrated Authentication to SAP R/3

    Hi,
I dont know weather this issue has to be posted here or in WAS or GUI.
Is there any way to do the Integrates Windows Authentication to SAP R/3. Once the Users logs in to the Network domain adn then to SAP GUI, the User should not prompt for User id and should directlt take in to the Role Menu.
I know for Portal it is possible, but i am not sure for R/3. Please let me know if there is any documentation for the same.
    Thanks & Regards
    Sumanth

    Sumath,
there are various variants to do so:
If your R/3 is running on Windows (and in the same / trusted domain), you can use SNC with either NTLM or Kerberos authentication
Otherwise you can log on with SAP Logon Tickets. You mentioned already that you know NTLM/Kerberos is feasible with EP. Now, if you simply integrate your R/3 systems in EP by means of SAP logon tickets you have essentially a smooth SSO for your users.
Finally, you can use ITS up to 6.20 on Windows to SSO to R/3 (the latter on not neccessarily on Windows, too). Simply setup webgui, active SAP logon tickets and configure the PAS service to use Windows authentication.
Whatever you decide on, al alternatives are a piece of cake to set up.

    Dominik

  • Queries related to ABAP Programs migration to SAP ECC 6.0

We are planning to re-implement SAP using SAP ECC 6.0 We are currently using SAP R3 Version 4.7
Regarding migration of existing ABAP Programs and data, I have some queries which may kindly be answered by any of the experts of this forum.
    1. I have heard that SAP ECC 6.0 or SAP Netweaver 7.0 will never support BDC programs. To upload data into SAP, BAPI is the preferred option. Is that true?
    2. In ABAP Programming, relational operator < (less than), > (greater than), <= (less than or equal to) etc are not supported by SAP Netweaver 7.0. In stead, operator contants LT, GT, LE etc must be used. Other wise, SAP reports syntax error. Is thar true?
    3. Screens (Dynpros) have been fully programmed in ABAP Objects in almost all programs related to functional modules (SD,MM,PP,FI/CO etc) in SAP ECC 6.0. Is that true?
    4. Programs written in SAP R/3 Version 4.7 will report syntax errors when that program is compiled as it is in SAP Netweaver. Is that true?
I request you to kindly reply for these four queries at the earliest.
    Thanking you,
    K. RANGARAJAN
    ABAP Programmer

SAP ECC6.0 will be supporting BDC programs too.But ,apart from this there are other options like LSMW  ,BAPI,  ECATT tool
which serves the same purpose  .   It doesnot mean that SAP wont support BDC.
Coming to relational operators u can use both of them but preferred is operator contants LT, GT, LE.
If there are any obsolete statements or any Obsolete function modules used in version4.7 U will get syntax errors or unicode errors.
    Regards,
    Lakshman.

  • SAP BPC 10.0 Netweaver : Workstatus email notification sender is the User how to change it ?

    Hi Gurus,
I've just set up email notification for Workstatus. I works fine but I've noticed something that won't be accepted by my customer :
I Had created a BPC Service User SMAIL to send email notification. But it is useless since the email notification sender is always the user who actually made the workstatus change.
This is very strange because this means that SAP can send emails IN NAME of Users. By default the email used is the user's email set up in SU01 and if the user has no email the sender mail adresse is : USERID@DEFAULTHOST
Default domain defined in SCOT transaction for SAPCONNECT.
I think that this situation raises a security breach ; to my opinion SAP should not be able to send emails in the name of users.
Do you have any idea to change this situation in order to make all notification emails send by one unique System User as BPCSERVICEMAIL for instance.
Thanks in advance for you help.
    Vincent.

    Hi JW,
The answer to your question #2 is that we won't have SSIS packages in BPC7NW since all SQL server based functionality won't be there in Netweaver version. If you use migration tools to migrate from BPC5.x to BPC7NW, it can convert SSIS packages. However any custom SSIS code would have to be converted manually. For more information, please read Ryan's blog at SAP's definitive strategy for planning technologies moving forward: What's the word on BPC, BI-IP and SRC?

Yes I know that http://java.sun.com/j2se/1.4.2/SAPsite/download.html used to work, but it does not exist any more and now redirects to http://java.com/en/javaforbusiness/sap_download.jsp.
