Measuring with LVDTs without mains power

Are there any data acquisition solutions to drive and record from LVDT's that do not need 240V power i.e. SCXI chassis. The measurement system will go inside a large machine tool with flood coolant so 240V live power is not good. Ideally I would like to use a USB bus powered system so it is plug and play and low voltage. The measured items are moved on a pallet shuffle system, so the wiring either power or sensors must be unplugged easily.
Or are the any precision linear distance devices similar to LVDTs which can be used with a NI USB DAQ system. There are to record any physical movement of a component in process. Resolution 10 microns and sealed against water and swarf.

What you might wish to consider is using an FM system and a transformer to isolate the signal from the system.
If you use a carrier based system (FM) then you will obtain a high degree of noise immunity and by using a transformer you will obtain safety isolation and protection to a required international standard.
Lucas Schaevitz manufacture a conditioning module that meets the above requirements and I believe that Solatron do as well.
I have used both of these manufacturers equiment for many years and found both to deliver excellent products.
LVDT's don't last for ever so try to accomodate the life of the item (the bearings wear out eventually and coolant is horrible stuff even in these days of highly filtered coolant).

  • MBP powering off unexpectedly when running on mains power

I have an early 2006 MBP 15". For the past few weeks it has been powering off unexpectedly while running on mains power. If I take the battery out and continue on mains power there is no problem.
I replaced the battery with a new one but I still have the same problem with running on mains power, battery installed and powering off unexpectedly. This happens about 5 minutes after powering up.
Has anyone got any ideas what might be causing this?
    Thanks.

Hello J.C Thanks for your response. I tried resetting the SMC but the problem still occurred. With some further investigation I have narrowed it down to a USB accessory. Either mouse, keyboard or iPhone docking station.
Seems weird that the problem didn't occur when the battery was taken out but still running on mains power.

  • W500: using the switchable graphics with vista ultimate without the power manager software?

seriously, invest in a new hitachi travelstar 320gb for 49 bucks from that tiger place online and a usb hard drive caddy, pop in your free clonezilla cd and your rescue and recovery problems will be over!
after reading all the problems with that software i figured my data was too valuble to get caught in that mess so for under 75 bucks problem solved and i rid my w500 of that bloatware. even cheaper then ordering the recovery disks from lenovo.
working on getting rid of the rest of the useless software now.
hey question, how do you use the switchable graphics on the w500 with vista ultimate without the power manager software? if you can thats next!!

That's because you are asking a T500/W500 question in the Thinkvantage forum. Anyway, the answer to your question is in this thread.
ATI recently started packaging their switchable graphics driver together with their regular Catalyst. So downloading their latest driver Catalyst 9.4 from the ATI/AMD site and then modifying it with the Mobility Modder will allow you to use switchable graphics without the power manager. The little problem is just that the released version of the Mobility Modder stopped working with Catalyst 9.2 and you are on your own getting a modified Modder  working on 9.4, see here.
So I decided not to make more work for myself staying on a modded Catalyst 9.1 and for the time being living without switchable graphics.

  • Sound Power Measurement with 4472

Is onboard DSP a must for any Sound Power Measurement?
I know that NI-Sound Power Plus works only with 455x.
Is it simply because NI has not yet written a software for Sound Power Measurement using 4472 or is it technically NOT possibly to do Sound Power Measurment using 4472?

    1. The 6036E is a "sweet" card for high-speed, high-accuracy DAQ on the PCMCIA bus. Even at 10-times oversampling you can achieve 15-20 kHz of response with nice line resolution in the FFT. My experience with the PCMCIA bus has shown a wild variation in DAQ bandwidth (IBM/Compaq...the PITS -- Dell...the best ; and , no I do not work for Dell). For signal conditioning, I use SCXI (so I can not comment on the use of the other components). If you can live with interchannel skew, the set up looks quite promising. Our DAQ requirements demand the use of simultaneous sample-and-hold (SCXI 1140) for either two-channel hot-film measurements or multiple sound pressure measurements with precise cross-correlation (to eliminate wave reflections and e
chos within the test article). Our microphones were developed by NASA for use in VERY HIGH temperature environments, so our signal conditioning ahead of the 1140 is made from custom devices.
    2. It is important to note that any toolkit add-on to LabVIEW "could" be written by the end user using the very same subVIs distributed with the Full Development System. Sound power is merely a term used to describe a particular mathematical method involved in transforming the acquired sound data from the real domain to the frequency domain. The mathematical methods have been used for many decades. I use my own custom code originally developed in FORTRAN, converted to C++, and now embedded in a code interface node (CIN). The issue to resolve comes down to a) do you have the in-house capability to write and support detailed code development, or, b) do you purchase the toolkits and thereby achieve the capability very quickly. Although the toolkits are expensive, the burdened cost of, say, 1
additional highly-skilled employee could cost 20 times as much.

It could be a software issue. I would reinstall the OS. You don't have to lose or reinstall any apps from archive and install. This way, your user folder remains intact but you get a fresh copy of the OS.

  • No power going to the Satellite L655-17V PSK1EE with or without the AC ada

    Hi there,
I have an issue with a Toshiba laptop. It's part number is PSK1EE-05900REN.
I believe it is water/ESD damaged in some way.
I have looked at the manual for this discontinued laptop but i am unable to find what the problem is (what part of the laptop sparked) so i will describe where.
On the underneath of the laptop i have the battery compartment facing towards me, at the top left of the bottom of the laptop is a smaller vent space and a larger one on the right above it.
When i turned the laptop on the smaller vent space seemed to cause a spark and 'burn' out something.
Is anyone able to advise me on what part has burned out and how i would go about fixing it?
EDIT: There is no power going to the laptop with or without the AC adapter connected.
    Many thanks

To be honest, I dont think that someone would be able to say what motherboard part is faulty.
I think the motherboard is affected, but I cannot say whats wrong there.
In my opinion the motherboard needs to be replaced and this will not be cheap.

  • No power to computer with or without plug and reset button on battery not responding. New battery?

No power to MacBook Pro with or without plug; no response from battery reset button.  New battery?

That can depend on what variant of the MacBook Pro you have. The MacTracker database shows 33 major variants since 2006.
First, does your MacBook Pro have silver or black keys? That is a good place to start because black-key models do not have a quick-change battery. Batteries were historically less reliable in the silver key versions.

  • G570 will not power on with or without battery

I have a G570 that will not power on or charge regularly. I have tested ac adapter and i am getting 20 volts. I also tested power at the jack on motherboard where the power port plugs in and getting 20v there as well. If I remove battery laptop will not power up on just ac adapter. If I plug in ac with battery installed the power button, power light and battery light just blink but still will not power on. I have left overnight and still nothing and I have tried 2 new batteries. My thinking is motherboard and I have tried googling but have not been able to find this exact symptom. Unit is out of warranty .

    hi itrcomp
I would suggest doing a power drain
Remove AC and battery and hold down the power for atleast 15 seconds,
then reconnect just the Ac see if it will turn on.
One thing is sure here, your system is not getting power from the AC,
The light blinking when you have the Battery in is an indication that the battery power is low and it is not charging.
Your troubleshooting steps leaves the AC and the (Power system-DCjack or motherboard) the culprit.
Your System also has a DC in Jack part like this
    Part number 31048400
    PIWG2 DC-IN CABLE-15.6
that might also be the cause.
You can check your system Maintenance Manual about how to go about checking this.
I would suggest to Call Lenovo Technical Support for assistance if your not comfortable about opening the Laptop.

  • AC resistivity measurement with MyDAQ on TEC

    Hello,
I would like to ask for advice: we would like to measure resisitivity of Peltier-elements. If we use DC method, because of the Seebeck-voltage of the element, we do not get the real resistivity value. The common method to use AC measurement in case of such devices. I would like to know, if it is possible to use a MyDAQ device for this task? As a first approach we do not need the best accuracy, this would be more as a "broken-element" test (there is usually a significant shift away from the nominal AC resistivity value stated by the manufacturer).
What would be the easiest way to carry out a simple measurement? What about if I use one analogue output of the MyDAQ lets say with 1kHz, and I drive the Peltier-element with this voltage AC source? And I connect a known resistor in series, and I measure the AC voltage drop on this. From this data, I could calculate the current, and the AC resistance of the Peltier-element? Of course I have to choose a resistor so the MyDAQ can drive the network.
what is your opinion, where to start?
    Thanks!
    Solved!
    Go to Solution.

    Hello, thanks for the reply!
Actually I am just going to replace 60 Peltier elements in a "home-made" 15 years old heat exchanger (I expect to find some mice too ). This assembly has dropped performance (heat transfer power) and also I know that, a few years ago after a malfunction with the hot side cooling fans, this device was running for a certain time without forced cooling. What is quite bad in case of Peltier-elements. I have already bought 65 brand new Peltier-modules and after I get some heat conducting paste, I will replace them. And I will have 60 pieces of old Peltier modules, to play with them
Since I have this NI MyDAQ, I thought it would be fun (and would give also valuable information) to try to measure the old elements' AC resistivity. Since this task is not like I should do often, so for first, I would not like to go for more pro solutions, I will try the MyDAQ first.
I expect that some of the modules got structural degradation during the heat shock, and this may be measurable in a shifted AC resistance.
I would do the measurement with zero applied DC voltage. These modules are Melcor PT3-12-30L (discontinued product), the nominal module resistance is about 5 Ohm.
EDIT: and would you recommend a certain circuit to try? Shell I use a known resistor for current measurement via measuring the voltage on it? Or I could use a known AC current to drive the Peltier, and I would measure the resulted AC Voltage on it?

  • Repeated chime when charging iPhone via mains power

When attempting to charge my iPhone 4s with mains power I get a repeated chime, and the phone will not charge. However, when using the same USB cable, and charging via a USB port the phone charges normally, without the repeated chimes

Yes, I'm using the original adapter. I confess I haven't checked for lint etc but will do so. I am able to recharge my iPad, using the same adapter and the USB-Lightning cable, in the same socket. I am currently using the original charging cable connected to a powered USB socket and the iPhone is charging normally.
Should add that I took the phone in to my nearest Genius bar 2 weeks ago after experiencing problems on voice reception during phone calls (though my voice seemed to be received OK by recipients). Problem appears to have been solved by a restore to factory settings reset. Probably unconnected with current issue.

  • Someone changed my passcode! How do I reset my phone without a power cord or iTunes?

Well earlier this week, my iPhone 5c was stolen. but I got it back from the school's office. I had a passcode sent on it before so i simply entered that passcode into the phone but it wouldn't let me in at all. Now i guess you can say that the person who took my phone bypassed the passcode and changed it. I was wondering how do you reset the phone without a power cord or iTunes?

Unfortunately, you can't.  You will need to access the computer you sync with and use iTunes.  This link will provide help:

  • I have been able to wake my macmini by hitting the space bar - but since installing 10.7.4 using the 1.4Gb combo this wake method no longer works. Now the macmini shuts down, and I have to switch mains power off and on again before powering up the macmini

Since purchase of my macmini (2011 model) I have been able to wake it from sleep by hitting the (wired) keyboard space bar.
However, I recently updated the OS to 10.7.4 using the combo (1.4Gb) update, since when I cannot wake the macmini in that way.
Now, after putting the macmini to sleep, pressing the spacebar causes it to shut down.
I then have to switch mains power off and on again at the wall socket, after which the macmini starts up from shutdown condition.
I am by no means an expert, and have not been fiddling with settings, so I am in need of advice on what could need resetting to allow me to return to the previous simple 'wake up' approach!
    Thanks.

  • Mains power cut to house - iMac now DEAD

Today I turned off the mains power to change a light bulb in a room that has given me some problems with sparking in the past.  Unbeknown to me, my son was using my iMac... (no, I failed to check properly, now I am suffering, believe me..).  After I switched the power on, my son exclaimed "Well, now the computer won't turn on!"  We have a surge protector which would have been on and working, but as the computer - a 17" intel duo core iMac purchased new in mid 2006 is old, and the surge protector is the same age, I am sick with worry wondering what it could be, and there are no repair shops near us open tomorrow, or even in our town!  I have to wait a week, and travel 100kms to the apple service specialists.... This computer is home to all our music (massive amounts my son has on there) and my photos - thousands, a serious hobby.  As well the computer runs Final Cut Pro Studio software, as we do a bit of video editing.  I have backed up no files, always meant to get around to it.....  As the computer is older, the main thing that devastates me at this point is my photos - a life history really, and thousands of hours too, photoshopping, etc.....  I have tried to computer in different power outlets, tried turning on, off, unplugging, all I can find recommended on these kind of sites - but to no avail.  The screen is black, and not a sound can be heard.  Completely dead.  Not one sign of life in the 8 hours since.....  I have been reading about PRAM batteries... this computer has had a massive amount of use, daily and in the house of serious creative insomniacs - for six years now, so almost daily serious use, and as yet just two dead keyboards, no other problems.... I got some extra RAM when it was purchased.  But recently it has not liked shutting down (it hasn't) so it has been pretty much permanently on, with the screensaver up,..... could this suggest a dying PRAM battery?  experts please, this internet reading has done my head in, now I have to wait a week!!!!! to know if our photos and music can be recovered.... if not the computer itself revived....?
Thank you for any help.  I know, I am SUCH an idiot for not checking all electronic devices were off, but as we know, this MAC hasn't been turning off recently...

Here is what Apple says to do with an iMac that won't start, it's from the owner's manual.
If your iMac won’t turn on or start up   Make sure the power cord is plugged into your iMac and a functioning power outlet.
Restart your computer while holding down the Command (x) and R keys, until the computer restarts. When the Mac OS X Utilities pane appears, select an option to repair your disk, restore your software, or reinstall Mac OS X and Apple applications. For more information, see “Repairing, Restoring, or Reinstalling Mac OS X Software” on page 44.
42 Chapter 4 Problem, Meet Solution
Press the power button (®) and immediately hold down the Command (x), Option, P, and R keys until you hear the startup sound a second time. This resets the parameter RAM (PRAM).
If you recently installed memory, and your iMac sounds tones every five seconds, make sure that the memory is correctly installed and that it is compatible with your iMac. Check whether removing the memory you installed allows your iMac to start up (see page 38).
Unplug the power cord and wait at least 30 seconds. Plug the power cord in again and press the power button (®) to start up your iMac.
If you still can’t start up your iMac, see “Learning More, Service, and Support” on page 54 for information about contacting Apple for service.
