Media apps (esp. iTunes) crashing at launch.

Question

The problem is on my G4 iBook, which has the newest version of OSX and iTunes (I'm away from it now so I don't now the exact version numbers.).
The problem is that when I try launching iTunes, it acts at if it is working fine (loading the library and opening) but it then suddenly quits within 5-10 seconds of the library loading. Only the first time this has happened did I get the option to reopen. Since then it simply closes. The last thing I did with iTunes before the problem began was drag mp3s into the library, so nothing unusual.
I've attempted opening an mp3 using VLC, an alternative media player and it too closed on launch. I have not tried other players, but media seems to work in Firefox and Safari.
What I have tried so far:
- I have verified and repaired permissions. Multiple times. Likewise, I used the automated permissions repair and maintenance scripts in Onyx with no change.
- I've checked the other user accounts and iTunes crashes all the same.
- I tried deleting the preference for iTunes. Upon reloading I go through the setup but it crashes once iTunes proper starts. Strangely enough, all of my playlists are still there and the library is intact, which shouldn't be if the prefs have been deleted. I then deleted all my prefs and the problem is still there and now I need to reset all of my other prefs.
From what I can tell this is a problem with media in general (or maybe just music) and not iTunes specifically. The fact that my iTunes prefs don't seem to really get reset is really worrying me. What should I do?
