I need software that will allow me to locate images that are stored on DVD's. For instance, search for image "JFP-TurnerAgency-134", find a preview of the image, and then see that it's located on DVD #759. I'm using Iview currently, but don't like it.
The "volume management" feature appears that it might work but no one is really talking about this feature. Will Lightroom V2 accomplish this and work as DAM software (digital asset management)?

CLIENT MANAGEMENT SOFTWARE - RECOMMENDATIONS?

Hello again...my second post of the night!
Can anyone recommend a decent client management software application to use on my MacPro...bearing in mind I'll be upgrading to Panther sometime in the new year.
I work as a freelance graphic designer, so I'm primarily looking for something that will enable me to keep track of client work//invoices//payments etc...that's inexpensive and simple to use for a non-accountant...(the paperwork is the bit I enjoy least!)...

Does anyone know of a good digital asset management software solution for cataloging InDesign files?

I am coming to this forum with this question because this amazing community of design professionals has helped me SO MUCH over the past few years...so I come to you for help once again as I search for a digital asset management solution that will also catalog InDesign files. I first used to use Canto Cumulus many years back, and then used Portfolio Standalone but both of those had their issues and are now discontinued. I am now looking for something else. It is for my small business and needs to handle all of my InDesign files and all associated artwork (I have a HUGE library of files....this also includes all of my image files, pdfs, etc.).
Extensis Portfolio Server is just WAY overkill and WAY too expensive for what I need. Also, the cheapest option (which is $1,999) only handles "thousands of files" whereas I have tens of thousands. I am also not interested in storing my "asset catalog" within the cloud...I just want it stored locally.
Please please can someone help point me in the right direction? I have been scratching my head searching for something...there is SO MUCH out there...the majority of which won't properly handle InDesign files as well, which is a NECESSITY.

Purple_Jim, for some reason I just lost my new reply, so am writing again:)
I just checked out the program and one CAN easily update the database when changes are made to the volume(s) as files are added/removed/renamed/moved, etc. This is GREAT!! I am busy trying it out and it is WONDERFUL and EXACTLY what I need! And it is SO SPEEDY too...I LOVE it!
I just had to contact their support tho' as it doesn't seem to want to add in all of the images. It APPEARS to be adding them but not all of the folders are showing up. If I can get this issue sorted out then this program would be IDEAL:) It's great to know that you haven't had any issues:) That gives me hope as this program looks PERFECT!!

**UPDATE**
In CASE you can shed any light on my issue...
I just did some more testing and it seems that the problem occurs if/after I hit “STOP” when the volume is being scanned. Once I try to update the volume after that so that I can continue adding images, then it seems that nothing is added to the directory in Tri_CATALOG after the point when I chose to hit “STOP”.
It does not seem to be cataloging everything:( I just tried adding a new volume but it appears to have stopped adding images to the database even tho’ it SEEMS as if new items are still being added in the “Scan Volume window”.
Here is an example: The image below labeled “469-00625” appears to have been added to the “Clients/Ascot Supply Corp./Buyer’s Guide/2014 Buyer’s Guide/Archive/z_buyer’s guide image library_jpg/06_valve hardware/JPEG” folder but when I do a search for the image it cannot be located, and this folder also does not appear in the catalog directory (second screenshot below). No matter how many times I try to update the volume, the number of images for the “Clients” folder below remains at 811 pictures (as if it has stopped scanning, even tho’ new ones are still being added) and I am not able to add anything else. The Tri_CATALOG database appears to have stopped adding images after the “2011 Buyer’s Guide” folder below even tho’ there are still several new folders still need to be added….see third screenshot for ACTUAL directory on the volume.

Money management software - recommendations?

I currently run microsoft money to manage my finances which means i cannot use it on my new macbook. Can anyone recommend a money management program which works on a mac? The cheaper the better!

A year-and-a-half after switching from a PC, I'm finally used to Quicken. (translation: I've forgotten how great Microsoft Money was).
I'm not in front of my MacBook now, but doesn't it come w/ Quicken 2006?

Need Asset Management

I'm in search of an asset management software for my company, we have about 50 Mac users, 3 Xserve's, 3 RAID's. I want something that I can use to scan the network for Mac Devices (and/or Windows) and provide information about the devices that we can use for asset management, I'm pretty open to whatever you can provide me.

Altiris' Client Management Suite has supported OS X as a client for several years now
If that's the case, it would be nice of them to actually tell people on their datasheet.
I always question a company's intent when they can't be bothered to include their Mac client support in their sales propaganda. What do they think they're going to lose by adding it? Are all those Windows users going to suddenly stop using their product just because it supports Macs too? I doubt it.

Can someone please confirm that I have understood correctly these things?
Company X wants to get Silver software asset management competency, to do that first step is:
Your company must employ or contract with two Microsoft Certified Professionals
(MCPs) who have each met one of the following exam or certification requirements:
Exam 70-673: TS: Designing, Assessing, and Optimizing Software Asset Management (SAM)
Your organization can attain multiple competencies. If your employees or contractors pass the eligible competency exams
for multiple silver competencies, you can count those exams toward attaining multiple silver competencies.
Do I understand correctly that first we have to get two MCP's and to become one we have to pass any exam (for example, MTA Security fundamentals)? And after that we need to pass Exam
70-673: TS: Designing, Assessing, and Optimizing Software Asset Management (SAM)?
Or do we need just this exam 70-673?
I am confused, can someone explain?

With the given need from the market to manage license compliance proactively - the givven toolsets from MS SCCM 2012 should be capable of handling the given complexity. (reference 27 processes out of SAM ISO 19.770-1:2012
Where can I find the solution accelerator, which guides us to help clients on two tipical use-cases
a.) Client has SCCM 2012 - however not yet established the SAM componentes to it (Contracts, Use-rights and License-Comparizons)
b.) Client has no SCCM yet and wants to start his journey with the Commercial scope right away.
Any guidance highly appreciated

SCCM alone isn't going to fit this need.
You need a License Compliance Solution / Software Asset Management (SAM) solution which SCCM is not.
The issue with those system, they fail of providing clean /usefull data.
Usually the best approach is to collect the data with SCCM, normalize the data for that I used BDNA Normalize, then pull in the SAM.

Yes, I have Googled and found mixed responses - is the Microsoft Software Asset Management Review e-mail I received legit or not? If in general they can be legitimate, but some may be scams, how can I tell which I received?
The one I received looks pretty good, and they provided a lot of very accurate info about my existing volume licenses. Calling MS for input yielded a lot of bouncing around and hold time and a vague, not very reassuring answer

license from your software vendor, I suggest you use the online support for the future confirm.

I am looking for suggestions and advice about photo database management software.
I will be graduating as a veterinarian in February and plan to document my forthcoming cases, using photos and perhaps some videos. At this point in time I believe it will be useful if the software is available for Mac as well as Windows platform (see later why).
However, I am open to any suggestions regarding Mac-only or PC-only programs as long as they are professional, reliable, strong, fast and customizable.
The photos entering the database will be:
1. close ups (taken with or without flash) or
2. taken from a close range (about 1-2 m for pets or about 5 m for horses/cows),
3. except for cropping, brightness and sharpness adjustments, there will be NO editing
4. saved in RAW, TIFF or JPEG. (I am not yet clear about the differences between these however the software should be able to handle as many major formats as possible).
Ideally, the software would allow:
1. to create custom keywords and add descriptive comments for each photo.
2. grouping of photos based on different criteria, themes, parents etc.
3. fast search
4. custom search, based on a large range of criteria, including text
5. Mac-PC interaction: Allow me to explain this: I have 2 laptops (Mac & PC) onto which intend to install the software and if the working environment uses PC only software, I will have the PC with me, otherwise the Mac and the database is always at hand.
6. data attached to each photo will move with it when the photo is transferred to a different machine using similar software (see above).

You should take a look at iView Media or its Pro version. It is a cross-platform (Mac and Windows) program that is free of some of the stultifying limitations of iPhoto. For example, you can create multiple catalogs and you can easily catalog media (not just photos) that are not on the current disk, like media stored on CDs. It has very flexible cataloging features.
If they have not changed their licensing, you can buy one license to run both the Mac and PC version for one price. You can make one catalog and easily pass it between a Mac and PC with no translation or confusion. This would be much easier than trying to make it work with iPhoto and some other Windows program.
If you were to go the iView route, you would have to "sync" the data back to the photos so that they carry your keyword etc. data with them to other apps. I don't know if iPhoto embeds that info back to the photos, or if it stays in the iPhoto database only.
Photoshop Elements 4 is great on Windows, but the Mac version of Elements does not include the cataloging feature because it integrates with iPhoto. I'm not sure how smooth that all works.

What is media management software?

I am new to RMAN and I am a bit confuse about media management software that is required to backup to tape. What is it exactly? Is it a backup software like Veritas Backup Exec? Does Oracle provide the media management software on Oracle 9i? Is the integrated backup apps in w2k system tools can be used with RMAN to backup to tape? I am planning to buy HP surestore 8i.

From my own personal experience, I suggest you also look at Bakbone's NetVault software: good quality, easy to use. (http://www.bakbone.com/products/downloads.asp) But, yes, media management software is 3rd party software to control tape libraries such as your HP Surestor 8i.

Im running windows 7 (64 bit) Vcast Media Manager Software will only run on 32 bit OS, does anyone have any solutions so that it will run on 64 bit OS? Appreciate any help on this matter. thanks:

64bit computing has been standard for almost 1/2 a year now. I am not talking about high end machines either. Even cheap, low end machines have come standard with 64bit versions of Windows 7 (under $400).
Please Verizon, get a 64bit version out ASAP.
46 percent of all computers running Windows 7 are using the 64-bit edition
Until then, everyone who is running x64 machines use dazzboard (beta) or DoubleTwist.
From a buisness standpoint, I see the lack of x64 support as being a loss in potential revenue that could have been gained from customers purchasing media driectly from the V CAST Media Manager.

Please recommend network management software

I need help to find some network management software that will work with our switches. I'm running a network that has Cisco/Linksys managed switches:
10xSLM2008,
5xSRW208,
2xSRW2008MP,
1xSF 300-08
I was hoping there is management software (not the webview/web browser thing), that could do these things (in preferred order):
- connect to these by SNMP (or similar) to show me a little statistics on each port on each switch, along with connectivity between these switches.
- let me know which port knows which mac addresses, and maybe also the IP addresses of these.
- let me know which mac addresses uses most bandwidth
- ban a mac address
I'd be happy if anybody could give me an advice on what software to buy.

It can't ban a MAC address, but that is what dot1x/port security is for. I'm not sure if your switches support it, but you can look into that from the switch standpoint.

I am looking for ideas/help. I currently have a BB Z10 (10.1.0.2039) with Verizon Wireless. The company has a BB Enterprise Server for older devices (I previously was on that). I bought a Z10 several months ago and have been connecting to the corporate network through Lotus Traveler. They do not have and will not implement a BB 10 Enterprise Server. Some in IT informed that if the company used the BB software they could manage all devices..... not accepted.
All my contacts, calendar, and company email is funneled to the BB Hub.....
So my company is implementing a Mobile Asset Management Service that I have to sign up for (Airwatch?). They only support Android and IPhone.
Will future versions of the BB OS support Android Apps.... Soon (I have less than 2 weeks)
I have read where it is possible to put the device in development mode to run Android Apps. I don't know if that will work with this and have no idea how stable the phone is in that mode. I travel internationally so I don't know how a development mode would work overseas. Any thoughts?
I like my Z10 but will need to switch to keep functionality if I can't find a work around

Hi and Welcome to the Community!
BB10 devices have the ability to run .apk apps via special methods. Development Mode is used only for installing the app...not for normal operation. So you install (side-load) the app in Development Mode, then go back to normal mode for normal operations.
If a .bar file for the .apk app already exists somewhere, you can side load it to the BB10 device and see if it works or not. If there is not yet any .bar file, there is an app called SideSwype that can convert many .apk apps to .bar and install it to your device.
