Media Browser Displays Partial Aperture Library

I have a large Aperture Library (80K photos), but when I use the Media browser in other apps (Pages, Outlook, etc.), only about 1100 of the photos are visible. There are no photos left to process in Aperture. Since the issue impacts both Pages and Outlook, I figure it must be an Aperture issue. I'm running the most current release (3.1.1).
Any advice would be appreciated . . .

More detail would certainly help such as is the library referenced or managed. Also is there anything common to the 1100 that do appear?

  • Media Browser displays nothing..

My media browser in iWeb is blank and does not display any music or photos to select from itunes or iphoto.. Any idea what's up??
    Pls help..

Alright, I solved this problem at least for myself. Hopefully this works for all of you guys.
(Note: Quite all iLife and iWork applications before doing this)
Step 1. Download and install Pacifist http://www.charlessoft.com/
Step 2. Insert Snow Leopard Disc
    Step 3. Run Pacifist
Step 4. Click "Open Apple Install Discs"
Step 5. Select Install Disc in Pop Up Dialog and select "Choose" (it can take a couple of minutes for the disc to load)
Step 6. In the search field at the top of the window type "mediabrowser" (no space) and the second result should be a folder. When you select it it should show that the file path is Library>Application Support>iLifeMediaBrowser
Step 7. Select the iLifeMediaBrowser folder and click the "install" button in the top left of the window
Step 8. Click "Install" in the pop up dialog then input your password in the next window and hit ok
Step 9. Enjoy your media browser being up and running again
If there is a dialog that says something about possible file damage or something to that effect, just hit continue. You'll be a o.k. and up in running again.
I hope this helps any of you!

  • Media Browser not showing iTunes library

The media browser, which is a system-wide open dialogue feature in OSX has been failing to show the iTunes library in my main (but not admin) account.  It shows photos and movies just fine, but nothing from iTunes.  Garageband files yes, but iTunes library nope.  For example if I wanted to add music to a slideshow I can pull down to iTunes but nothing is there.  Same if I wanted to attach an .mp3 to an email, or add music to a movie.  Same thing happens in Chrome, Pages, Numbers, Keynote, etc.  Interesting, it is unique to this user account.  I've tried it in another user account that has an iTunes library and it worked just fine.  Any idea on how to fix this?  I'm guessing there's a preference somewhere I could delete that could rebuild it.  I don't want to trash any iTunes library files as I have spent years building playlists, metadata, stats, etc.  Thanks for your help.
I'm using the latest versions of OSX, Safari/Chrome, iTunes, the iLife '11 suite, and the iWork suite.

    Nobody?
Weirdly enough, I have to add it works in a few select 3rd party apps, like Audacity.  However, it still does not work in any Apple apps nor the trial of Capo, a music app, which is why I'm looking for a fix.

  • PP CS6 Media Browser displays thumbnails upside down

    Hi,
    I'm using a 2010 MacBook Pro 17" 3.06 GHz, 4GB RAM,
NVIDIA GeForce 9400M GT, OS 10.6.8 and PP CS6.02.
When I'm viewing stills in media browser, it's displaying many of the thumnails upside down and side ways.
Not sure what else to say about it or do.
    Any ideas?
    Thanks in advance,
    Simon.

PP won't reorient stills that were taken with the camera turned on it's side for portrait shots, so I wonder if that's what you're seeing here.  The shooter had the camera turned or even upside down at the time.

  • Slow Media Browser to Aperture library

    Hi All,
I'm just after migrating my entire iPhoto library over to Aperture (reference). Libraries are identical - exactly same number of pictures, events (projects), faces etc. Some about 25k pictures each.
What i noticed however is, that when I use Media Browser (browsing for image in Safari or other programs), loading of media under "Aperture" is significantly slower than iPhoto.
I can easily browse iPhoto resources shortly after opening Media browser, but it takes good 20 - 30 seconds, before Aperture resources are available for browsing.
Any ideas on speeding this up?? Why would it be so much slower?
Thanks in advance for any clues.

It was broken in a recent Aperture update, and then fixed. The issue then was manually correctable by making certain all images had proper date metadata.
I don't why it is now slow -- there may be some need for it to go find the last Aperture Library opened by A3, as only one will be shown in the media browser, even though Aperture can be used with several different ones. It is the last one opened by A3 that will be presented, I believe.

  • How do I change the default iPhoto library for the Media Browser?

I have multiple Aperture/iPhoto Libraries. When I open the new Keynote and attempt to use the Media Browser to select a photo, the pictures the Media Browser displays are not from the Default Libary.
Is there a way to change the default photo library that the Media Browser references?

    Hello danstat,
Thank you for the question.  The Media Browser accesses iPhoto's last opened photo library.  To access that photo library through the Media Browser, quit Keynote, access that photo library in iPhoto, quit iPhoto, and relaunch Keynote.
You can access the an alternate photo library using these steps:
    To switch between photo libraries:
    Quit iPhoto.
Hold down the Option key as you open iPhoto.
Select the library you want to switch to.
    Click Choose.
iPhoto '11: Create a new iPhoto library or switch between libraries
    http://support.apple.com/kb/PH2505
Alternatively, you can drag the photo in directly to youre Keynote presentation from the iPhoto or Aperture windows.
Thank you for using Apple Support Communities.
    Best,
    Sheila M.

  • Strange (arabic) font in Media browser for Aperture

Since a couple of days the media browser (available from iWork applications) shows strange (arabic) description of some of the standard folders of aperture.
I'm not aware of having changed anything or installed font managing software.
    Any ideas for help?

Is it the same in all iWorks apps, or only one of them?
I checked, the corrupted text should read: Projects, Photos, Faces, Places.
And if you get the same corruption for all languages (german, english), then probably not the localization strings are wrong, but the framework that tries to access the strings. But I am not sure about where this framework resides, whether it is included in the System Library, the Media Browser, or inside Aperture.
It would be good to know, if other iApps that use the Media Browser have the same problem. Do you have Garageband or  iWeb and could try to access Aperture from those ? And could you take some pictures with Photo Booth to see, if you can access these from Keynote or Pages?
And to exclude any wrong preference setting in your user library, try to use the Media Browser with Aperture from a different account.
And to exclude problems from a corrupted Aperture Library create a new Aperture Library with a few simple images and see ift the problem persists.
If the wrong strings occur only with Aperture I would reinstall Aperture.
If the problem occurs independent of all this I would recommend to reinstall the system.

  • Show Aperture library and MULTIPLE aperture 3.0 libraries

In iPhoto'09 it is possible to File -> Show Aperture library. This seems to open the library most recently opened in Aperture 3.0. Is it possible to use "Show Aperture Library" and open a different library, if you have MULTIPLE aperture 3.0 libraries? If so, how? Thanks.

Thanks. I was afraid I might not be able to easily change this, but...
Which preference file are you referring to? I have several Macs on a home network with a NAS. What I am really trying to do is let other Macs on the network use their versions of iPhoto to browse an exported portion of my Aperture Library.
I am wondering... I can easily place an export of part of my Aperture 3 Library on the NAS. If I open that NAS Library in Aperture briefly to write the preference file. Then copy the path and preference file to the other Macs, before reverting Aperture back to its normal local Library (which is what I use). Would this:
    1. Allow the other Macs on the network to find and browse the NAS Aperture Library Export?
    2. Cause the non-Aperture Macs any problems. (They couldn't overwrite the Aperture preference file, as they do not have Aperture.)
    3. Any other issues?
    Thanks for your help.

  • Two user accounts sharing aperture library constantly repairing permissions

My girlfriend and I each have a user account on our iMac.  We have our Photo Library in a shared folder so we can both access it when using Aperture.  However, every time I want to use Aperture, I have to first repair permissions.  After doing this, everything runs fine.
Then, when my girlfriend tries to access Aperture, SHE has got to repair permissions first or Aperture gets hung up.
Basically, it appears that when I repair permissions in my user account, it messes up the permissions in her user account and vice versa.  Has anyone ever experienced this behavior before and have they found a solution?
    Thanks,
    Rick

It is not sufficient to have the library in a shared folder. That will not help with the permissions inside the Aperture library package.
The safest way to use an Aperture library from two differnet accounts is to move it to a disk or disk partition that has the "Ignore Ownership on this volume" flag enabled. Then you can take turns  using the Aperture library from your accounts.
The procedure is explained in this document for an iPhoto library, but it work also for an Aperture library.
iPhoto: Sharing libraries among multiple users http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1198
Just remember, that any disk you are using for an Aperture library will have to be formatted for Mac:
    MacOS Extented (Journaled).
My media drive with the Aperture library looks like this in "File > Get Info":

  • Aperture library does not update in iLife media browser

I had the following problem for over a YEAR now. The *photo browser* does not have current Aperture information available. I looked everywhere for a solution, including this forum and the support database. The proposed solutions were as follows:
    1. Turn on iLife sharing and auto-preview creation in Preferences - DUH!
    2. Turn off iLife sharing, restart Aperture, then turn it back on - DOES NOT WORK
    3. Hold down Command-Option when starting Aperture and rebuild library - DOES NOT WORK
    4. Trash ApertureData.xml file - DOES NOT WORK
    5. Trash ApertureData.xml as well as Aperture.aplib folder - DOES NOT WORK
I'm sure there were a few more things I tried. I thought I'd ask a "genius" at the Apple store. I realized then (again) that that moniker is gravely misplaced.
The crux of the problem is that the ApertureData.xml is not kept up-to-date by Aperture. That XML file is used throughout the Mac to provide photo browser access and insertion of preview files into Mail, iLife, iWork and other supported programs. Why that file stopped updating is a mystery to me. Some people suggest it has to do with the upgrade from 1.5 to 2.
For all those super-frustrated Aperture users who have had the same issue and cannot fix it using any of the above methods, here's ultimately what I had to do to fix this.
    1. Export every one of your projects
    2. Create a new Aperture library
    3. Import all projects into the new library
The only items that do not transfer are the ones situated at the root level of the library. Those will have to be recreated manually. Since I only had a few smart folders there, it did not affect me gravely. The keyword list should also be created when you create the new library. If not, look for Keywords.plist in the old Aperture.aplib folder.
I spent literally WEEKS looking for this solution, it is nowhere to be found. I cannot be the only one running into that problem. I'd be curious to know if there are others out there with the same problem.
    Thanks!

Wow, this is not encouraging. I have a slightly different version of this problem. I had my Aperture library showing up (and updating as I expanded it) in the Media Browser, and all was well until I bought a new Mac and transferred everything over from the old one. For whatever reason, not everything makes it over. Now, on the new Mac, my Media Browser only shows images from Photo Booth--not even iPhoto! I feel your pain and share your ire.
Someone mentioned September (not coming soon enough). Is there speculation that Aperture will be updated (finally!) when Snow Leopard releases?

  • Aperture Library and iLife Media Browser - Showing Deleted MobileMe Gallery

I'm currently using Aperture 3.1 and iLife '09 and just noticed that when I try to access the Aperture Library from say iPhoto or Keynote that the list of folders contains two MobileMe folders with my name, one of which contains dupicates of two of my gallery's. Now I deleted all of my MobileMe gallery's to see if I could fix this, but it still shows a MobileMe folder and two gallery's that no longer exist. I even logged out of MobileMe in Aperture, but still in the iLife Media browser the non-existent gallery's are still shown. I even tried deleting all previews and re-generating in Aperture, to see if the sharing information would be updated, but still these phantom gallery's persist. I guess this doesn't cause me any problems, but I would just like to fix it and wondered if anyone else had seen this and knew of a solution? Thanks.

  • Aperture 3 not in Media Browser - Non-Default Library Location Issue

    Hi Everyone,
My Aperture Library cannot be viewed in the media browser. I created a new Aperture library in the default location which resolved the issue; however, I have my library on an external hard drive and it is too big to put on my internal HD.
Any suggestions on how to tell iLife & iWork to look in my external HD?
    Message was edited by: ZerbyPhotography

    Hello Everybody,
Ok...I went to the Genius Bar, but to no avail. (by the way, my issue about not being able to open programs while holding alt was due to my not depressing the alt key for the required length of time. So, false alarm on that one. Oops!)
I just updated to 3.0.1. I continued to have the same issues with accessing my files through the media browser. I called tech support; and through their instructions, I was able to gain access to my library through the media browser. This seemed to be by accident, so I don't know if it was due to the update, a particular logarithm of library selection, or a combination of the two.
What I remember being the last actions were to create an alternate library, >file, >>switch to library, >>>other, select the new library, (possibly restarting Aperture), then switching back to my main library through the same selection as previous (i think...possibly by a different method).
Regardless, my library is now accessible in the media browser in iLife & iWork programs.

  • Aperture doesn't appear in iWork's media browser or Mail's Photo Browser

I've just installed Aperture 2, and I realize that it doesn't appear in the following browsers:
    - Media Browser in iWork'08
    - Photo Browser in Mail
Also, in iTunes, I can select Aperture to sync photos from, but no album is displayed
Any idea what could be wrong ?
    Thanks for your help.

After a long while on the phone with Apple Tech Support, we finally figured out the solution. After deleting ALL my previews (control-click on your main library icon and choose delete all previews) the Aperture library structure shows up everywhere it is supposed to. Of course, generating new previews will give access to the images again...
    Hope this helps.

  • Some Aperture photos and projects missing from iLife Media Browser

Good evening - having a little bit of trouble getting Aperture to work smoothly with my iLife media browser (i.e., inserting photos into Mail, Pages, Keynote, etc).
I currently have 5699 photos and 131 projects in Aperture. But the iLife Media Browser only shows me 5131 photos and 130 projects; when clicking on individual projects in the browser, anywhere from 3 to 70 photos per project are missing. Tried repairing permissions, repairing the database, and rebuilding the database - this improved the issue, but didn't completely resolve it as 5679 photos now show in the Media Browser, and 20 remain missing. Also tried deleting, and generating previews for all my photos in the library. No change.
My library is mostly referenced, with a few photos managed.
Obviously in the grand scheme of things 20 photos missing in the Media Browser not that big a deal. But wanting to get to the root cause though because without solving this issue, I'm concerned about a larger underlying problem that may only get worse as my library grows.
Has anyone had, or resolved a problem similar to this? And can anyone offer any additional suggestions? Are there any specific files that feed the iLife Media Browser that I can delete and rebuild that may solve this issue?
    thanks,
    Mark

I think I've ironed this out. Several intertwined issues. I took a moment to type out my notes; hopefully it helps you guys solve this quickly if you get a call from someone else on this down the line.
[1] original problem of several hundred items missing in Media Browser: probably an issue of previews not being built. Mostly fixed when I regenerated previews for my library, but repairing permissions and repairing the database may have helped too.
[2] Residual problem of 20 items still missing (5698 items displayed in Aperture when selecting Inspector > Library > Photos; 5677 items displayed in Mail Photo Browser). My issue wasn't as much with 20 missing items in a browser as it was with trying to understand the root cause and whether I had an underlying Aperture, Aperture Library, or OS problem that would bite me later. Turns out several things were causing this problem:
[2a] In Aperture, when you select Inspector > Library > Photos , all your content is displayed: photos, videos, and any audio clips you may have imported (e.g., a recorded audio clip on your camera narrating shoot, location, client, exposure value etc). So even though you've selected "Photos", your "xxx items displayed" count on the bottom of the screen reflects all your imported content. This is not the case in the Media Browser - of which there are two variants in Mac OS:
[2a.1] Mail has a Photo Browser, which behaves much like a "Media Browser Lite: the title bar says "Photo Browser", it only accesses your Aperture and iPhoto Libraries, and only shows photos and video.
[2a.2] iWork applications have a more comprehensive Media Browser, where you can select between Audio, Photos, and Movies. If you select Audio the iWork Media Browser will show any audio files present in your Aperture or iTunes library. If you select Movies, the iWork Media Browser will show any movie clips present in your Aperture or iMovie libraries. Photos behaves the same way as "Photo Browser" in Mail, showing any photos present in your Aperture (or iPhoto if installed) libraries.
Turns out I had three audio clips in my Aperture library. When selecting "Photos" in either the Mail or iWork browsers, the total item count will only show photos and videos - no audio clips. So now 17 missing items remain.
[2b] Stacks - one project contained nine photos grouped into a stack. Only the key photo of a stack is previewed/shown in Media Browser. So a stack of nine photos will only show as one in the browser - unstacking the photo will allow them all to appear. So now nine missing items.
[2c] Seven photographs somehow had broken links to their referenced masters, and needed to be reconnected. Down to two missing items.
[2d] One photo simply wouldn't cooperate - no matter how many times I regenerated the preview, or deleted the preview and then regenerated it, nothing worked. I deleted it from the library and reimported it. One missing item remains.
[2e] Final missing item was a photograph I rejected. Makes sense; as media browser does not display rejects.
Problem solved!! Hopefully this might be of help to somebody in the future.
    cheers,
    Mark

  • Can't access Aperture 3 previews in iLife Media Browser

I know this has been posted before but I don't think I've seen a resolution yet ....
Since migrating all of my data etc from my MacBook to new iMac I can't see the Aperture previews in the Media Browser. I've tried reinstalling Aperture and previews are set to be shared with iLife (in Preferences).
    Any ideas?
    Thanks in advance.

Thanks for this - it didn't work, but something else did!!
Turns out there's actually a Knowledge Base answer on a similar matter (discovered after calling Apple Support). Just open Aperture from the dock whilst holding Option + CMD and then select to Repair the library - middle option. Worked straight away!
