Media Browser for photos in Lion?

Hi,  Updated to Lion and have a question.  I no longer see a media browser(or media section) in the left side of my finder windows. I want to be able to see photos without opening up iPhoto.  I have a "pictures" folder under favorites, but this does not let me view the phoos.  I see in mail, there is a photo browser.  How do I get one like the Mail browser into my finder on the left side?  Many thanks for your help.
M

What you're referring to is the Media heading in the Open dialogue. This has nothing to do with the Finder. And, yes, the media heading is still there

  • Using Photo Browser For Photo's Not I iPhoto??

Is Photo Browser in Mail connected to only Apple programs (iPhoto) or can I use it to browse a folder of my choosing?
    Thanks

    hunter,
I'm not sure what you are driving at in your last post. If you are thinking of a "browser" (like the Photo Browser) that looks at everything in the file system (like a Finder window or dialogue, and opposed to just scanning for images), then we already have that. This is, essentially, what we get by clicking the "Attach" button.
However, that's not the only way to attach documents/files to an email. We can simply drag anything we want to attach into the Mail composition window, directly from the Finder. Mail has long been completely "drag and drop" in this regard.
What we have now, new to Mail, is support for what has become "traditional" iLife media browsing. Consider that the iLife components all interoperate with each other's libraries, all being able to show just what the other one does. Mail is now "joining the club," and can see what is stored in the iLife libraries just as they appear in the pertinent iLife applications. In effect, it can now "think" like iPhoto.
What I am looking to see is the addition of support for the other iLife components in Mail. I have no doubt that this would appear as tabs to the current Photo Browser, just like in iMovie, allowing one to look at "Photos" (from iPhoto), "Music" (from iTunes), and "Movies" (from iMovie).
Best of all, the same functionality is being built into the Finder. Just a couple days before Leopard was released, I listened to a complaint by a friend about the fact that one cannot open an image in iPhoto in an application like Photoshop, not directly from the "Open..." dialogue in Photoshop. My response to him was that he could open iPhoto, set his preferences there to open double-clicked images in Photoshop, then manage things that way.
Only the next day, I found out that Leopard was incorporating the "Media Browser" functionality into the Finder. This is exactly what my friend was looking for! He'll have to upgrade to Leopard, of course

  • Strange (arabic) font in Media browser for Aperture

Since a couple of days the media browser (available from iWork applications) shows strange (arabic) description of some of the standard folders of aperture.
I'm not aware of having changed anything or installed font managing software.
    Any ideas for help?

Is it the same in all iWorks apps, or only one of them?
I checked, the corrupted text should read: Projects, Photos, Faces, Places.
And if you get the same corruption for all languages (german, english), then probably not the localization strings are wrong, but the framework that tries to access the strings. But I am not sure about where this framework resides, whether it is included in the System Library, the Media Browser, or inside Aperture.
It would be good to know, if other iApps that use the Media Browser have the same problem. Do you have Garageband or  iWeb and could try to access Aperture from those ? And could you take some pictures with Photo Booth to see, if you can access these from Keynote or Pages?
And to exclude any wrong preference setting in your user library, try to use the Media Browser with Aperture from a different account.
And to exclude problems from a corrupted Aperture Library create a new Aperture Library with a few simple images and see ift the problem persists.
If the wrong strings occur only with Aperture I would reinstall Aperture.
If the problem occurs independent of all this I would recommend to reinstall the system.

  • When browsing for photos, why does it not recognize the most recent iPhoto photos?

Whether I'm browsing for a photo to upload to a website, or to put into a word document and use the "Photo" directory which looks at my iPhoto photos it doesn't seem to register photos that I've put into iPhoto recently. I'm not sure if there's a way to "refresh" this directory or not, and there's no exact time that I've been able to recognize where the photos are available through this browser. It's kind of annoying, as I'm using iPhoto to manage all my photos.
    Anyone run in to this?

You can't and shouldn't access image files inside the library via the Finder.  The following is from a post by Terence Devlin on accessing photos for use outside of iPhoto.  It's the definitive treatise on the subject.
There are many, many ways to access your files in iPhoto:   You can use any Open / Attach / Browse dialogue. On the left there's a Media heading, your pics can be accessed there. Command-Click for selecting multiple pics.
(Note the above illustration is not a Finder Window. It's the dialogue you get when you go File -> Open)
You can access the Library from the New Message Window in Mail:
There's a similar option in Outlook and many, many other apps.  If you use Apple's Mail, Entourage, AOL or Eudora you can email from within iPhoto.
If you use a Cocoa-based Browser such as Safari, you can drag the pics from the iPhoto Window to the Attach window in the browser.
If you want to access the files with iPhoto not running:
For users of 10.6 and later:  You can download a free Services component from
MacOSXAutomation  which will give you access to the iPhoto Library from your Services Menu.
Using the Services Preference Pane you can even create a keyboard shortcut for it.
For Users of 10.4 and 10.5 Create a Media Browser using Automator (takes about 10 seconds) or use this free utility
                                                      Karelia iMedia Browser
         Other options include:
Drag and Drop: Drag a photo from the iPhoto Window to the desktop, there iPhoto will make a full-sized copy of the pic.
File -> Export: Select the files in the iPhoto Window and go File -> Export. The dialogue will give you various options, including altering the format, naming the files and changing the size. Again, producing a copy.
Show File:  a. On iPhoto 09 and earlier:  Right- (or Control-) Click on a pic and in the resulting dialogue choose 'Show File'. A Finder window will pop open with the file already selected.    3.b.
b: On iPhoto 11 and later: Select one of the affected photos in the iPhoto Window and go File -> Reveal in Finder -> Original. A Finder window will pop open with the file already selected.

  • ITunes files missing in Media Browser for all other apps

I've read many and posted a couple times about this issue, but new information has come to light, so I figured I'd give it one more shot.
Somewhere along the line from migrating from 2007 MacBook to my newer 2010 iMac, I've lost the ability to see my iTunes files in other apps in the media browser.  This is very specific to the user that my main library (237gb).  I've got a separate library on a different user account, no issues there.  It happens in all of the iLife apps(like trying to add music to a slideshow), iWork apps (clicking on media), Mail (attaching a .mp3).  Oddly enough, Audacity has no issue seeing the iTunes files.  I've tried several solutions, including re-installing the Media Browser, and trashing the .xml file (Apple's own solution found here). Nothing worked.  I had hoped the release of Lion might fix the problem, and I upgraded "the Apple way."  The problem persisted.
I had thought perhaps the issue lied from carring over old code, apps, or whatever from the migration.  I had hoped doing a clean install of Lion might do the trick.  I finally got an external to move the library too, and do a very manual migration.  Copied all documents and media to the external, boot from the Lion Boot CD I created before upgrading the 1st time, reformat drive, install Lion.  It went off without a hitch.  I made sure to copy all of the database files (.xml, .itl), and while all of my settings, playlists, and play counts were preserved (something that is important to me), the same problem reared it's head.
Another idea came was to start a new user account, and just use the media files, and not the database files.  After simply dragging the media folder into iTunes and copying the files (the drobo has plenty of space), it worked perfectly.  Except I had lost all of my play counts, settings, and playlists.
So the question is, is there a solution to fix the old user account, or is there a way to rebuild what I've lost in the new user account?  I'm using completely updates software in Lion, iLife, iTunes, iWork, etc.

Turns out my "iTunes Library.itl" file was corrupt.  I used the old "iTunes Music Library.xml" file to rebuild a new library with existing playlists and play counts.  Though that didn't go off completely without a hitch, I did find this solution.  Problem solved.

  • Browse for Photos Box

Could someone please teach me how to add a "browse" button in my form that will allow the user to browse for a picture on their PC and upload it into the form as a thumbnail or set image size. Please tell me if this is possible, thank you.

Place a Image Field on the form..When the user place the cursor on the image field, the browse screen will appear by default.
You can use the sizing property of Image Field to set the image size..
    Thanks

  • ILife media browser has incorrect date for Aperture photos

It looks like the iLife media browser use the date a preview was created as the date in the iLife media browser. Photos from the iPhoto library have the date the photo was taken.
(A list view with file name, date and file size is available from a control click.)

I got this to work by dragging a project out of my blue folders (it then showed up in iLife media browser), then I went back into Aperture, dragged it into the blue folder again, and quit Aperture. Just before quite Aperture updated the iLife preview exports and all of my blue folders and projects showed up in the Media Browser! Somehow dragging a project out and back in seemed to kick start the folder search.

  • No thumbnails appear in iweb media for photos

Back in Jan, this question was asked but I could not find the answer to this topic and it had a green star. Sorry to be redundant but this just happened. Could someone please help me out ? Thank you in advance.
When I select media on iWeb, iWeb pulls up my iphoto folders and not the thumbnails within the folders. My folder names appear and I can not click on them. Therefore, I can not drag any of my photos into iWeb. Any advice on why this is suddenly happening?

    creinhar:
Welcome to the Apple Discussions. Do you see the iPhoto, Events and Photos icons in the browser window? If so look at the bottom frame of the media browser for a dimple. Click and drag it upward to display the thumbnails of any icon selected above as seen in this screenshot.
TIP: For insurance against the iPhoto database corruption that many users have experienced I recommend making a backup copy of the Library6.iPhoto database file and keep it current. If problems crop up where iPhoto suddenly can't see any photos or thinks there are no photos in the library, replacing the working Library6.iPhoto file with the backup will often get the library back. By keeping it current I mean backup after each import and/or any serious editing or work on books, slideshows, calendars, cards, etc. That insures that if a problem pops up and you do need to replace the database file, you'll retain all those efforts. It doesn't take long to make the backup and it's good insurance.
I've created an Automator workflow application (requires Tiger), iPhoto dB File Backup, that will copy the selected Library6.iPhoto file from your iPhoto Library folder to the Pictures folder, replacing any previous version of it. It's compatible with iPhoto 08 libraries and Leopard. iPhoto does not have to be closed to run the application, just idle. You can download it at Toad's Cellar. Be sure to read the Read Me pdf file.

  • When preparing video for Media Browser share it quits

I've been video taping class discussions on a Panasonic camcorder, and bringing them into Imovie.  Most of the movies are around an hour+ and take up all but a bit of the dvd.  Had no problems, and then I did one, where I inadvertently hadn't change the wide screen default to regular size, so redid it, and in the Share> media browser, it re processed it but when I made a few changes and set it up to reprocess to put on IDVD somewhere along the way it just popped the whole computer and went blank and shut off.  FORTUNATELY, Mac came back up and program doesn't seem to be damaged, altho I wouldn't know if it was, it just continued to work.
So, I dumped that project and redid it, and it processed fine and I put it in IDVD and burned it.
I went on to do 5 more, editing, and now I'm at the point of Share>Media browse for IDVD processing of all of them, and the first one I did, it blanked out the IMac again.  So I tried a 26 min one....and it did the same thing.
Has this happened to anyone else and what should I do?  Should I refresh the IMovie in case it has a glitch in there now? thanks
PS I did notice that when it's working, on an hour IMovie, it will say "this will take about an hour...."
when it doesn't work it usually starts our with "this will take about 2 hours"
This is IMovie in the ILife 09 version

I fully understand that rendering isn't conducive, but this is the trade-off that you're experiencing.
When clips are moved or composited, FCP has to prepare that video for display in the Canvas. If you're working in Unlimited RT - as most of us are - then you're asking FCP to work harder at doing just that. And, unlike Motion, FCP doesn't use the GPU whole-hog, so it's easy to max that resource out quickly with large images.
The only real way to prevent this from happening when you're moving clips is to toggle Caps Lock on, disabling rendering. I don't think this is particular conducive to most workflows either (especially if you're compositing), but if all you need to do is resequence existing elements, it might work for you.
The other possibility is to use lower-resolution proxy images but that, like everything else, isn't really an answer...

  • ITunes missing from Media Browser -- "open itunes to populate list"

I am on a MacBook Pro 10.7.3 running GarageBand '11 6.0.4 and all of the sudden no tracks will display under Audio in the Media Browser (Photos and Movies still appear). No tracks from either iTunes or GB show up. This is confusing as I have been using GB to make podcast/music mixes for more than 5 years and I haven't changed any settings or done anything different, but now I get the message "open itunes to populate list" or "To see GB songs here, open GB to edit and save your music."
Also, for quite some time I have been unable to go the alternative route of dragging tracks directly from iTunes and dropping them on to the timeline in GB -- that used to work, but mysteriously stopped, so I am dependent on the Media Browser for importing music.
I read thru the forums and tried the advice given to someone this was happening to in Final Cut -- recreating iTunes .xml file. Did that, still no tracks display.
Other advice says to reinstall GB or iLife altogether -- I hope to avoid this, but if I need to go this route, how do I reinstall GB w/o a disk? Can I do it through App Store and will it recognize that I have already purchased it?
I am dying to be able to get back in to my music mix making in GB, so thanks in advance.

    another way:

(Let the page FULLY load. The link to your answer is at the top of your screen)
    moontroll wrote:

you can't, you'd need to find the DVD

no, it'll only recognize your purchase if it was through the app store

  • Adding new images and files into the Media Browser?

I am trying to put all my image files on my computer into iPhoto and having no luck- for whatever reason, iPhoto does like the format of my files, nearly all of which are .tifs.
I'd like to get all the pictures into the media browser for Keynote so I can easily put images into presentations. This is mostly for making presentations for scientific talks of my data. A lot of images of tissues, blots, etc.
Is there a way to get files/folders into the media browser and bypassing iPhoto?
I can't get iPhoto (version 5) to work properly on my computer at all so I think I'm pretty fooked.

Depending on what you want to do you can open any folder and drag photos from that folder into keynote without using iphoto. But that could be tedious if you want to insert a lot of photos. If you want only one photo per slide you can drag the photos (a bunch at a time) on the sidebar where you see the thumbnails of the slides and each photo will be placed on a page. The drawback with that is sometimes the order of the photos may have to be tweaked.
    Hope this helped

  • Leopard Media Browser Updating

I am noticing that when I add additional media (via import or other method) it does not instantly appear in the media browser for use in applications. Is anyone else noticing this issue? Is there a way I can force the media browser to refresh itself? New media does eventually appear, but I can not detect a pattern for when it finally is available.
FYI - The delayed media is usually imported photos in Aperture 2.1 but I am certain that I am generating previews and those processes are complete.
    Any ideas?

I have opened and closed several apps... no result.
Aperture says it is updating previews on close... no result.
I have not tried the age old, log out and log back in. (I have a process running in the background I do not want to interrupt)
Either way, it shouldn't come to that I would hope.

  • How do I get network drives to show in left panel of media browser

Okay, I'm new to audition.  When I start Audition's media browser, only the local HDD's are shown.  If I OPEN FILE, I can navigate to find tyhe network drive and Audition will open the file.  Also the network drives show in Windows Explorer.  I searched the FAQs and the help file, but maybe I'm not using the "magic words"  So, how to I get these network drives to appear?
Windows 7 64 bit home premium
home built 3.67 gb Intel Quad core, 12 GB RAM, Several local HDDs
    Audition CS6
    Thank you

I'm not sure this is correct.  I have mapped a NAS to drive "Z" and mapped a drive on my video editing desktop to drive "Y."  These both show up in the left panel of the media browser for Premiere and Photoshop as the share names  "MYDOCS" and "BAAAA,"  as well as in Windows Explorer.  But not in Audition. Only the local drives are shown in Audition's media browser.
I can open a file in audition by using BROWSE by clicking on "MYDOCS" or "BAAAA" as they appear in the Windows Explorer file dialong and then navigating on those drives to the desired files.
What am I missing?  Do others have their network drives show in the left panel of Audition's media browser?

  • Keynote 6.0 Mavericks -  media browser shows no movies

In the media browser I can only see movies that are in imovie - not the ones in my movie folder or itunes as I could before the update. How can I include more folders in the media browser?

First thing to check if media in iTunes does not show up in the Media Browser inside other applications like Keynote is if the content is downloaded in iTunes. Often content is viewable in iTunes but may still be in the iTunes Cloud and not physically downloaded to your computer which is what the Media Browser requires.
To show purchases that are in the cloud go to the top menu bar and click on iTunes>Preferences>Store and put a check mark in "Show iTunes in the cloud purchases."  Now when you are looking at your media in iTunes you will see a "cloud" icon next to items that are in the cloud and have not been download yet. You can click on the icon to download the media into iTunes and it will then be visible in the media browser for other applications.
Also if you just want to download all your media content at once then go to the home screen of the iTunes Store section within iTunes and along the right hand side of the window under "Quick Links" you'll see a "Purchases" link that will take you to where all of your past purchase from the iTunes Store or kept.  Here you can download all your Music/Movies/Books/Apps that you have ever purchased and do it one at a time or all at once.

  • IPhotos not showing up in Garageband Media Browser

I have been able to duplicate this problem on multiple network accounts. We are using a WIN2003 SMB server. I have a 2700+ iPhoto file library. I have rebuilt/recreated the iPhoto library and the problem
is that the Garageband Media browser for iPhoto does not work. We are using the latest Garageband 3.04 and iPhoto 6.0.6. Any ideas why this might be happening? It seems to work find with other
iPhoto libraries that aren't as large.
