Media Browser without iPhoto or Aperture

I gave up on using iPhoto a little while ago because of how the library was built and the rather rigid means of editing photos and working with files. So I switched over to a more manual setup using photoshop and bridge.
Of course now when I want to use the media browser in the iWork suite, my lack of an iPhoto library leaves me with no options. Granted, I can always search for the file in finder and drag it over - but the media browser feature is fantastic and I'd hate to go without it.
Aside from reinstalling iPhoto and needlessly taking up space with a new library, do I have any other options to get the media browser back on its feet?
Any help is appreciated. Thank you.

Sorry, I should have elaborated on that. I do not own Aperture; purely an Adobe user. But I assume it would be compatible with the iWork suite since it is an Apple application. Just hoping to keep things as simple as possible while still allowing me to use the programs I prefer.
Thanks.

  • Open Media Browser in IPhoto 08?

How do I open the media browser in IPhoto 08? I do not see a menu option. I want to add a movie I shared from IMovie to the Media Browser, into one of my iPhoto galleries....
I was able to open it in garageband and drag it from there into IPhoto, but I thought Media Browser was viewable from all the ILife apps...
    Thanks!

You can drag any folder via the Finder into the iMedia Browser window to get it to view the contents. There's a folder in the Movies Folder called iMovie Events. Drag that into the open iMedia Browser window and you should get the same clips that is in iMovie. Once dragged into iMedia Browser they will be there when opened again.
TIP: For insurance against the iPhoto database corruption that many users have experienced I recommend making a backup copy of the Library6.iPhoto (iPhoto.Library for iPhoto 5 and earlier) database file and keep it current. If problems crop up where iPhoto suddenly can't see any photos or thinks there are no photos in the library, replacing the working Library6.iPhoto file with the backup will often get the library back. By keeping it current I mean backup after each import and/or any serious editing or work on books, slideshows, calendars, cards, etc. That insures that if a problem pops up and you do need to replace the database file, you'll retain all those efforts. It doesn't take long to make the backup and it's good insurance.
I've created an Automator workflow application (requires Tiger or later), iPhoto dB File Backup, that will copy the selected Library6.iPhoto file from your iPhoto Library folder to the Pictures folder, replacing any previous version of it. It's compatible with iPhoto 6 and 7 libraries and Tiger and Leopard. Just put the application in the Dock and click on it whenever you want to backup the dB file. iPhoto does not have to be closed to run the application, just idle. You can download it at Toad's Cellar. Be sure to read the Read Me pdf file.
Note: There now an Automator backup application for iPhoto 5 that will work with Tiger or Leopard.

  • Media browser doesn't show Aperture but shows long-uninstalled iPhoto?!?

    hi,
Now that 3.0.1 seems to have solved most of my problems I can finally concentrate on the details.
My media browser in iLife, iWork and mail.app gives me a choice between photos from Photo Booth and iPhoto. The weird thing is, when I select iPhoto it tells me that iPhoto 5 or higher should be installed, which it isn't as I haven't used iPhoto for years (and never on this computer). And, more importantly, Aperture is missing.
I have already deleted the iApps plist, restarted a couple of times, repaired permissions a quarter of a million times in the last few days, and none of it helped.
I know this is an issue that has popped up more often in this forum and for which a definite solution hasn't yet been found, but I'm hoping the iPhoto part may shine a new light on it allowing somebody smarter than I to solve this.
Thanks in advance. Oh, and thanks to the entire forum for what they did in the last few days. So many great tips and solutions were given by so many people.

    This worked:
I created a new library by selecting >file, >>switch to library, >>>other, selected New Library. Then Quit Aperture (have to do this because it did not take until I quit). Restarted Aperture and switched back to my normal library.
Access to my Aperture library in the Media Browser came back right away. Desktop Background also returned. I had to restart the Mac to get the Screen Saver to come back.

  • Media Browser not loading with Aperture 3.1

I upgraded to Aperture 3.1 with the automated software update and have come across a debilitating problem - the media browser can no longer load Aperture photos. When I click on Aperture the browser that shows up in a standard file open dialog window just has a spinning grey circle. Media from iPhoto or iMovie will load, so it's something specific to Aperture after upgrading. This is a big deal - are there any recommended solutions? Have others comes across this problem with Aperture 3.1?

    Hi,
See the discussion at the link below -- I can only confirm the problem, and am not confirming the one posted solution because I have not tried it yet, and have not reasoned why it works, although it very well may.

  • Media Browser doesn't refresh Aperture images

This just started happening recently. The old behaviour was -- iWeb is already open, I open Aperture, add images, and the media browser in iWeb would pick up the new images within a few seconds.
Now the only way I can get the media browser to show the new images is to exit and restart iWeb.
Any way to get the automatic media browser refresh working again?

Have you tried reapplying the following:

  • How do I access photos via the Media browser in iPhoto '08?

I have used Pages several times before for an in-house newsletter--with good success. My last newsletter was done in the version of Pages contained in iWork '06 and with photos contained in iPhoto library from iLife '06. Now I am using the version of Pages from iWork '08 and photos from my iPhoto library in iLife '08. When I am in Pages and open the Media Browser, I can see all the photos in various Events. How do I select/choose a particular photo within an Event and drag it to an image placeholder in my Pages document?

My Media Browser shows Events or Images. See below and see if yours is the same:

  • Apple Camera RAW updates without iPhoto or Aperture

I couldn't find a place where this really fits so I am placing it here.
I recently got a Nikon D90 and I take pictures in RAW format. I do all my editing in Adobe products so I have not bought Aperture or upgraded iLife. To be able to view the D90's files in CoverFlow and QuickLook requires the camera raw 2.3 update. However, you cannot install the update without Aperture 2 or the last year's iPhoto. This wouldn't be much of an issue since I don't generally sort my images in the finder, but every time I opened a folder with any raw files in it I would get frequent quick look errors popping up and the Finder would crash.
I fixed it by downloading the Aperture 2 trial so it would allow me to install the update...but it's ridiculous that I should have to have jumped through hoops to get the update installed.
Apple: Remove the iPhoto/Aperture requirement on RAW updates!

Well, my updates install without a problem.
"Camera RAW update" comes from Adobe and has absolutely nothing to do with iPhoto or Aperture.
    http://www.adobe.com/products/photoshop/cameraraw.html
    http://www.adobe.com/support/downloads/detail.jsp?ftpID=4364
Apples, "Camera RAW Compatibility update" should install without a problem.
    http://www.apple.com/downloads/macosx/apple/application_updates/digitalcameraraw compatibilityupdate25.html
The only time when I had a message "... not required..." was when I attempted to install the update while it was already installed.
Two things to consider would be; one, that the Apple's update doesn't work 100%.
It claims to provide RAW compatibility for Canon 50D, and yet the sRAW 1 and 2 don't show up in quickview or as icon preview (the full size RAWs do) - so maybe there's a similar issue with your camera.
Second, (if indeed iPhoto is needed to be installed - which I doubt, as I don't have it), extract iPhoto from your Leopard disc, install it, install the Compatibility update and then trash iPhoto.

  • Browsing Behavior:  iPhoto vs Aperture

I'm currently using iPhoto and Aperture concurrently (iPhoto for browsing/storage, Aperture for importing/tagging/editing), but I really want to switch over to just Aperture. There is one thing that's keeping me from moving to Aperture for browsing and storage:
In iPhoto, when you open the library (not an album, the whole library) I can scroll through events, open one, then click "show all events" and it returns me back to where I was on the list of events (I have approx. 1000 events, so this is important). Aperture almost replicates this, when you click on All Projects, you get swipe-able project thumbs, just like events. However, when you open a project, then click back on All Projects, you end up at the top of the list, not the scroll point you were previously at.
I know this doesn't sound like much, but it's a deal breaker for me in terms of finishing my migration. I often am looking through a big list of events, browsing through pictures from, say, 20 of them around the same time period to get the right shot. Having to scroll back down to the point I left off at every time I exit a project back to the main list is horribly annoying.
Anyone have any ideas on how to replicate iPhoto's behavior in Aperture?
    Thanks in advance,
    Elliot

Interesting, I didn't know about top tier folders. That gets me most of the way there - the scroll behavior is correct, but then I'm looking at all the photos, not swipe-enabled projects...
Don't get me wrong, when I'm doing post on a shoot, Aperture handles organization really well, but in terms of having all my shots and projects from the last decade laid out, I find iPhoto's chronological event view much more appealing than a really long list of nested folders. Apertures "All Projects" comes so close to working, but that scroll behavior (resetting to the top of the list) really kills it's usefulness to me.

  • I get this message when trying to upload pictures to craigslist via my media browser: open iPhoto to see photos from your iPhoto Library in this list

Anyone know how to resolve this?  I have already repaired the iPhoto permissions and rebuilt the library but neither of these solved my issue.  I am using iPhoto '11 on a MacBook Pro.
    Thanks!

Can you access the images with Image Capture (in your Applications Folder) ?

  • Aperture in iMovie Media Browser

I have looked in the Aperture manual, in the iMovie help, and I did a search on this forum. So far, I can't find an answer and I hope you can help. I recently upgraded from iPhoto to Aperture 3 and everything is working fine in Aperture 3. In Aperture 3, I have the projects sorted by date, which is the way I want them. that works fine. But when I use the Media Browser to access my Aperture projects, they are sorted alphabetically, not by date. This was not a problem when I used iPhoto, so I don't understand what the issue is. Is there some way to get the iMovie media browser to use the same sort order I have specified in Aperture 3? Thanks in advance for the help.

naperdan, thanks for your response. No, I had not seen that thread before, but it doesn't address my issue. Aperture 3 is working just fine for me, and I am not having any of the problems after importing my iPhoto libraries into Aperture 3 that the OP indicated. I can see all of my Aperture projects and albums in the Media Browser, I just can't find how to show them by date rather than by name. I could, I suppose, rename all 46 projects (e.g., change "photos0810" to "0810photos" and that would probably force the Media Browser to work the way I want it to. I just don't understand why it would show the iPhoto library in the sort order I specified in iPhoto but the Media Browser is treating the Aperture 3 library differently.

  • How do I change the default iPhoto library for the Media Browser?

I have multiple Aperture/iPhoto Libraries. When I open the new Keynote and attempt to use the Media Browser to select a photo, the pictures the Media Browser displays are not from the Default Libary.
Is there a way to change the default photo library that the Media Browser references?

    Hello danstat,
Thank you for the question.  The Media Browser accesses iPhoto's last opened photo library.  To access that photo library through the Media Browser, quit Keynote, access that photo library in iPhoto, quit iPhoto, and relaunch Keynote.
You can access the an alternate photo library using these steps:
    To switch between photo libraries:
    Quit iPhoto.
Hold down the Option key as you open iPhoto.
Select the library you want to switch to.
    Click Choose.
iPhoto '11: Create a new iPhoto library or switch between libraries
    http://support.apple.com/kb/PH2505
Alternatively, you can drag the photo in directly to youre Keynote presentation from the iPhoto or Aperture windows.
Thank you for using Apple Support Communities.
    Best,
    Sheila M.

  • IWeb media browser include Aperture?

All the tutorials discuss iPhoto. I can only assume that my Aperture library will be accessible. Anyone know if this is accurate?
Thanks in advance for any help with this!

Aperture works fine. In my media browser, I can see Aperture, iPhoto and Photo Booth. You'll need the update to Aperture 1.5.4 via software update.
    Details below:-
    - Aperture 1.5.4 is required for compatibility with iLife '08. This update is recommended for all Aperture users.

  • IPhotos not showing up in Garageband Media Browser

I have been able to duplicate this problem on multiple network accounts. We are using a WIN2003 SMB server. I have a 2700+ iPhoto file library. I have rebuilt/recreated the iPhoto library and the problem
is that the Garageband Media browser for iPhoto does not work. We are using the latest Garageband 3.04 and iPhoto 6.0.6. Any ideas why this might be happening? It seems to work find with other
iPhoto libraries that aren't as large.

  • IPhoto Media Browser Freezing

I am having some trouble with the iLife Media Browser and iPhoto. It seems that when I am using the finder to browse the photos. (To upload them to photobucket in this case) and it just gets stuck at loading. I have cleared all the caches, rest safari, run onyx, disk utility, and all that stuff. However it is still not working. The iPhoto library its self seems to be intact, but something is undoubtedly wrong. Thanks in advance, and please see the screenshot attached for further clarification. This is a screenshot of the screen that it freezes at: http://www.flickr.com/photos/36585984@N02/4193586296/

    Before you move 5k photos:
    Option 1
Back Up and try rebuild the library: hold down the command and option (or alt) keys while launching iPhoto. Use the resulting dialogue to rebuild. Choose to Rebuild iPhoto Library Database from automatic backup.
    If that fails:
    Option 2
Download iPhoto Library Manager and use its rebuild function. This will create a new library based on data in the albumdata.xml file. Not everything will be brought over - no slideshows, books or calendars, for instance - but it should get all your albums and keywords, faces and places back.
Because this process creates an entirely new library and leaves your old one untouched, it is non-destructive, and if you're not happy with the results you can simply return to your old one.
    Regards
    TD

  • IWeb keeps crashing when using Media Browser

Does anyone else experience constant crashes in iWeb while trying to work with images in the Media Browser (from iPhoto)? This application totally crashed EVERY time I worked with trying to drag and drop, review images in the Media Browser, and even tried closing the Media Browser window (probably 15 or 20 times last night).
Any insights as to what may be the culprit? Is it a bug in iWeb, or perhaps the photo file sizes in iPhoto are too large and crashes the application?
I have a dual G5 tower with 2 GB of RAM, so should be able to handle it.
I love the application, BTW. Never could figure out Dreamweaver (what a nightmare), but iWeb is exactly what I needed for a small business and also to create resources for my grad students.
    Way to go Apple.

Sorry, forgot to mention there's an issue with AVI files too. Both Quicktime and Flip4Mac handle some kinds of AVIs and I think they "fight" for control in certain cases and that also causes a crash. Yes, you'll have to pull out F4M when using AVI but it does come in handy if you're using WMV.
    They'll get it right yet.
That isn't the case, for me anyway. With Flip4Mac as
the only non-Apple plugins, iWeb would crash
immediately upon loading the thumbnail for any AVI
movie in my movie folder. Removing Flip4Mac stopped
    the crashing.
When I put the Flip4Mac plugins back into the
Quicktime folder, the thumbnails will load, but
playing the AVI file will result in a crash. Again,
removing the Flip4Mac plugins stops the crashing.
