"'[media]' cannot be played on this iPad" - recommendations?

Hi,
we're in the process of filling a new iTunes channel with video content to be downloaded via the iTunes store.
This is the channel URL - http://itunes.apple.com/at/podcast/flitelevel-tv/id464792847
However, we're having trouble getting consistent behaviour from the store - sometimes it lists our items, sometimes it doesn't, without us changing anything at all.
Additionally, our files (when they are visible) play fine on PCs and Macs via iTunes, but do not play on either iPhone or iPad with the following error message:
"[video name] cannot be played on this iPad"
The error message appears instantly after clicking one of the media file entries - doesn't seem to request the file at all.
Is there any extra setting or configuration work we need to do, and how can we make the file listing consistent?
Our encoding settings are identical to others we have compared that do work fine, but our files still will not play on iPad/iPhone. General settings: 852x480, 1600 kbit/s H.264 MP4 [email protected], AAC-LC audio at 96-128 kbit/s. Our encoder is Microsoft Expression Encoder 4 SP1.
By the way, iTunes does play these files without trouble on Mac and Windows PCs if accessed via our RSS feed - http://flitelevel.tv/feed.rss. When downloaded through the desktop iTunes application and then synchronized with the iPad the video plays from the iPad correctly.
Kind regards,
Krautzer-Lynn dev team

You are not the only ONE! I bought my iPad in Oct. It was working so perfectly for me that I think apple should be paying me for all the promoting I have been doing since then. I never updated it. Until Last week that I decided to update the software. I don't have a computer so I used my cousins Mac. When I got home I couldn't play anything on the iPod. I was told to sync my iPad. I went back to my cousins to sync my iPad. Then my iTunes podcast downloads got stuck. I was told to do a hard reset. I did, it fixed it. Today I was at the library downloading podcast and all of a sudden this message pops up saying podcast cannot be played on this iPad? I tried the hard reset, doesn't work. I can't download any podcast!!! I am soooo wishing I never upgraded the software because my iPad was perfect before then. There is NO mention of this anywhere on the Internet but here. It seems this is a new problem and apple offers no support. Well unless you buy their support services. I left Microsoft for Apple because they didn't play that Microsoft game of upgrading software with bugs and then charging you to fix it. I will update you when I find a solution.
Question?
Did you have this problem before you updated?
Is it just downloading your audio books or is it your podcast to?

    Hi,
I am the network manager of a school that has just done a 1 to 1 roll out of over a thousand iPad 2's to its pupils, and I have made some video tutorials for them - the next problem I had was distributing these videos, I tried various different methods and then decided that podcasting them would probably be a handy way being as this would allow them to get the tutorials that they required, and would work with our current systems.
The problem I have is that when you click on the podcast in the iTunes app it says 'videoname' cannot be played on this iPad - now, this is hard to believe as if I embed this video in an epub, it works, if I view the podcast feed in RSSRadio App all the video's play fine.

but I can't believe that this works in one podcast app and not iTunes (it seems to work fine in iTunes on the PC too, so surely that would suggest the podcast RSS or whatever you'd call it is formatted correctly?)
Any ideas would be massively helpful, even if only to say I have to re-encode my videos AGAIN, even though they do play on the iPad if I get them onto it via a different means than iTunes.
    Cheers

When you have a query please post the feed URL rather than its contents. For the record, yours is at

I don't have an iPad to test this, so I can only refer you to Apple's Podcast Tech Specs page:
    http://www.apple.com/itunes/podcasts/specs.html#formattingvideo
This says that the maximum video size for an iPad is 1024x768 - your latest episode is 1280x720.
    Slightly confusingly, it also says
'iPad & Apple TV can play the following video formats:
H.264 video up to 720p, 30 frames per second, Main Profile level 3.1 with AAC-LC audio up to 160 Kbps per channel, 48kHz, stereo audio in .m4v, .mp4, and .mov file formats
MPEG-4 video, up to 2.5 Mbps, 640 by 480 pixels, 30 frames per second, Simple Profile with AAC-LC audio up to 160 Kbps, 48kHz, stereo audio in .m4v, .mp4, and .mov file formats
Motion JPEG (M-JPEG) up to 35 Mbps, 1280 by 720 pixels, 30 frames per second, audio in ulaw, PCM stereo audio in .avi file format'
which suggests that mp4 files are even more limited.
Incidentally your feed gives this URL for the media file:
    http://www.honywoodschool.com/user/59/133934.mp4
However when downloaded this produces a file called 'howtosetupappeid.mp4' so soe sort of redirect appears to be in place, and these can sometimes cause trouble. It's better to link directly to the file - it's possible that the iPad doesn't handle the redirect.
That's all I can suggest: if it still doesn't cover the problem I can only refer you to the iPad forum where someone may be able to actually try your podcast and offer a comment.

  • I am regularly getting a message "...cannot be played on this iPad" when trying to download podcasts.

I am regularly getting a message "...cannot be played on this iPad" when trying to download podcasts while using a strong wifi connection.
I accidently deleted an episode that I wanted to save to listen to again and went to redownload it and got the message so the file and/or publisher aren't the issue.
Thank you in advance to anyone who can help me get my iPad to function correctly!

I am getting the same issue!! I have found it only seems to do it on podcasts with explicit content like idiot abroad or frankie Boyle.

  • Help with error: vidoes cannot be played on this iPad.

I just purchased two shows in HD from iTunes and they will not transfer to my iPad 2. I get the error "Some of the videos could not be transferred because they cannot be played on this iPad."
However I already have HD movies on my iPad that play fine. In Preferences I have the resolution set to 720p.
What might be causing this error?

This is because the H.264 level of these videos is too high OR your iPad 2 isn't on iOS 5. (It's only on iOS5+ that 1080p content can be synched to iPad2's.) Assuming the videos are 1080p and not 720p ones (most downloadable - non-streamed - iTunes Store content are 720p.)
Unfortunately, this can't really be fixed on your side as it's a protected video, which can't be H.264 level-edited with Subler (see http://www.iphonelife.com/blog/87/making-stock-videos-application-play-every-mp4 -files-possible ) and can't be played back in third-party players. All you can do, assuming the videos are either 720p or 1080p AND you do have iOS5 on your iPad2, is directly contacting Apple to fix the video files and/or demand a refund, mentioning the videos aren't doing what they're supposed to do.
EDIT: I've just noticed you're on iOS 5.1. That is, even 1080p should work. Contact Apple for a fix / refund.
EDIT 2: you could also try deleting the files from your local iTunes and re-downloading them from iTunes Store.

  • Error coming up states " warning some of the videos in your iTunes library including video "Dora" were  copied to the iPad "ellen's iPad " because they cannot be played on this

I purchased tv shows for my son over 4th of July weekend from iTunes on my iPad...he has been watching with no problem...yesterday I backed up my iPad and the videos were taken off while I was syncing it. Error coming up states " warning some of the videos in your iTunes library including video "Dora" were not copied to the iPad "ellen's iPad " because they cannot be played on this iPad was not copied because the video format is not supported by the iPad.....makes no sense since he watched the video on Friday on my iPad...I went into the properties of the video and under the summary tab states kind of video is mpeg-4video file...went into the folder on my pc and the file is listed as a m4v file...under the tab tv shows when my iPad is connected I have it checked to sync tv shows and to automatically include "all" episodes of "all shows" ....
I am using version 4.3.4 on my iPad and iTunes version 10.4 ...I even restored back to the original settings and still did not work....called apple twice yesterday and spoke to 2 different people and no one could help me.....I am able to load a movie from my pc to my iPad with no problem and the movie is a mpeg-4video file....totally clueless...

I kept having a similar problem - 3 out of the 10 videos I had on iTunes wouldn't sync. They were in the right format and I KNEW they worked on my iPod because I'd RECORDED them on my iPod. I finally figured out what to do! Go to the movies in your iTunes library. Click on one that does not sync. Click on "Advanced" at the top of iTunes and choose "Create iPod or iPhone version". Once that's finished, be sure you delete the old version so you don't keep getting the error (or have 2 copies of the same video) and sync. This should eliminate the problem. At least it did for me!

  • (Item) was not copied to the iPod (Name)'s iPod Touch because it cannot be played on this iPod

Last week I purchased Star Wars the Clone Wars: Season 5 off of the iTunes store. I have purchased all previous seasons over the years and they have been able to play on my iPod. But when I purchased this new season, whenever I try to add the episodes to my device, an error comes up saying: "(Episode) was not copied to the iPod "(Name)'s iPod Touch" because it cannot be played on this iPod. This has never happened to me before, and I am very confused, and a bit frustrated. Does anyone know what this means and if there is a fix to it?

    Greetings Smallen8,
Welcome to the Apple Support Communities!
I understand that while trying to sync a video from iTunes to your iPod touch, you receive an alert that the video cannot be played on your iPod. This can happen when you attempt to sync a HD video to your device. Please refer to the attached article for more information.
iTunes: Sync purchased HD videos to iPod or iOS device - Apple Support
When you try to sync a purchased HD video that isn't optimized for your device, you may see a message like this one:
HD videos purchased from the iTunes Store are offered in 720p or 1080p1 and are compatible with iPhone 4 or later, iPad, iPod touch (4th generation or later), Apple TV, and computers. You may need to download your purchased video from iTunes in the Cloud in a lower resolution for your device.
    Cheers,

    Not really likely, is it?
First of all, look on the iPod to see if the song is actually on there. (The last Sync of my Classic resulted in "song not copied... because it cannot be found." The song had previously been on the iPod. I checked and despite the fact that iTunes could not find the file, the song was still on my iPod. I checked the folder and the song was exactly where t was supposed to be. So I simply set iTunes to find it again. What happened? I don't know, iTunes simply threw a wobbly!)
Second, try another Sync. Does this change anything? If the song was on the iPod, does a second Sync remove the message?  If the song was not on the iPod after the first Sync, does the second one put it on there?
    What happens?
