Media Center MAC and Storage

A friend of mine recently gave me his old media center PC to use on my TV. I love the idea of recording live TV, however, Mac does not have this option built directly into any of its CURRENT systems (I have seen the blogs about the recent patent filed for a possible media type Mac device). You can attach 3rd party equipment, but do they work? In addition, my MacBook Pro laptop has eaten up most of my 120GB hard drive space, so switching to the media PC helped free up some space, but I still had to keep my music files on my laptop (over 40GB) for i-tunes. This is also the case with my photos. I want external storage for my laptop but on a home network for the media PC and my son's windows laptop. Does anyone have any suggestions for storing files on an external drive, instead of on my laptop, that all 3 computers can sync up to and use/access (share) without actually storing them on the individual hard drive systems? This may sound basic to some of you out there, but I am not up to speed on this stuff, and my friend is all about pc based systems.

Thank you for the reply-
Would this allow me to place all the data from my Mac on the NAS and have all three computers point to it without storing the info on the main hard drives? Does it need to be attached to the media center pc? Can I use a Mac mini like the media pc? Are there 3rd party program specifically for Mac to make it operate like a media center pc, besides Apple TV?
*Example- I placed my itunes music files onto the media center pc (except for purchased songs- can I transfer those as well?). But when I tried to get them back to the Mac, it transfered the whole file back to my Mac via the airport extreme, I could not just "refer" to the media pc to play the music from the files on it.
In addition, I have front row, which acts similar to the media pc system for access to audio/video files and picture files. But are there any programs besides front row that are similar to the media pc program that can be used on the Mac to include recording, scheduling and storing the live TV shows?

  • Mega 180-----Media Center III and a Vid Card----Working???

I'm trying to narrow down what is causing Media Center III to crash intermittently on my Mega 180.
I think I have it narrowed down to the SoundStorm drivers conflicting with Media Center III
But I want to eliminate that it is a problem with the 18G "Crush" onboard video chipset.  I am using the onboard only.
Anybody have a vid card in their AGP slot of the Mega 180 and use Media Center III??
Are you still getting crashes in Media Center III??
    John

Finally I give up using the Media Center.  I'm using now Girder with Nathans great plug in (see MSI Mega series girder plugin version 1.0 available ). The only disadvantage is that the fancy leds are not working.

  • .mac and storage problems

    hi
i'm new sorry just bare with me. i recently purchased a MacBook and .mac, my plan was to back up my documents, ical and other stuff on a weekly basis. this i thought i set up but on looking again, i dont know where i am backing the info up to.
this is what i want to do
    1) back my files up to .mac, just incase i have my MacBook stolen?
    2) do i have enough space to do this on my .mac account?
    3) be able to transfer all the said info and documents on to a cd-r, just as a 2nd back up.
i'am new so please take this into account.
    manythanks luke
    MacBook   Mac OS X (10.4.6)

    Hey Luke,
You get 1GB of online storage with your .Mac account. The way you backup your files is sending them to your iDisk. To access this you may A. Go to the Finder and click on the iDisk symbol on the left hand side, or B. You may upload your files online through .Mac online. You can change the amount of space alotted to you by accessing your account pane online through the link I gave above. Just login, and then go to Account link. You can download Backup to backup all your important documents to a External HD, .Mac, or to a CD.
    Hope this helps!

  • WRT610N disconnects and does not work with Vista or media center extenders like the DMA2200

Linksys and all other router manufacturers advertise the greatness of the wireless 5ghz band (especially with 802.11n), but I’m beginning to have my doubts.  It is true that the 5Ghz band is hardly being used so you'll have virtually no one to compete with.  However, the 5Ghz distance in no way compares to 2.4Ghz, and as a matter of fact, I find it to be quite terrible.  At approximately 20 feet away, both my Linksys DMA2200 and HP notebook barely get 1 bar using the 5Ghz N band with my WRT610N router.  In comparison, while using my 2.4Ghz WRT54g router, I get 5 full bars at that range, and at least 2 bars from anywhere else in my house.
I have all Linksys equipment in my house as I have been impressed with all of their 2.4Ghz in the past.  However, I’ve recently upgraded everything to dual-band N equipment and found numerous flaws in each of the new devices, plus none of them really even play well together.  My setup is: Linksys 610n router, DMA2200 media center extender, and a WUSB600N Dual-Band Wireless-N USB Network Adapter for my laptop – all of which are currently using the most up-to-date firmware. Other devices include a WRE54G extender and  Nintendo Wii.
Problem  #1) The LELA software with the new N devices doesn't even recognize that my DMA2200 is a media center extender.  Using LELA, I should be able to select my media extender and allocate more bandwidth for streaming media.  However, since my extender only shows up as an “unknown network device” those options are greyed out.  I tried to manually change the device to a media center, but still no go.  I suppose you can manually allocate bandwidth in the router setup somewhere, but considering these are all Linksys products, it’s absolutely ridiculous that an option specifically incorporated in the LELA software for a Linksys Media Extender does not work!!!
Problem #2) If you are only using one system with the router, the router might actually work as intended.  For most of us though there are going to be at least 2 or more systems connected to the router (wired, wireless, or a combination of the two) such as a PS3, Wii, laptop, PC, media extender, Xbox, etc.  If that’s the case, you’re probably screwed because you WILL experience frequent dropouts… ESPECIALLY if just one those clients is a VISTA machine.   Check the Linksys forums and you will find that this seems to be a problem with all of the new Linksys routers (610N, 310N, and 110).
Here is a Microsoft article that explains the issue
       http://support.microsoft.com/kb/928233/en-us
Problem #3) Because of  problem #2 I will never be able to get rid of the dropouts since my network is using one of Linksys’s media center extenders.  The DMA2200 is essentially a VISTA PC to some extent and accepts DHCP requests the same as a VISTA PC.  Since it is not really a PC though, there is no registry modification that can be done to alleviate the VISTA problem (not that the registry mod really works anyways).  So as long as I try to use my DMA2200 wirelessly with my WRT610N router, the frequent dropouts will occur and there’s nothing I can do about it.  This is REALLY TERRIBLE since the DMA2200 is specifically designed to be used with the WRT610N router in order to take advantage of the 5Ghz band and wireless N transfer rates.  You absolutely need 5Ghz wireless N to efficiently stream HDTV WIRELESSLY, but if you lose your connection every 10 minutes, it is impossible to watch any type of streaming media.
Problem #4) As mentioned already, when the “N” 5Ghz range is working on the WRT510N router, the distance sucks compared to standard 2.4Ghz G, N or mixed mode networks.  You can try to make it better by strictly using N products, disabling the 2.4ghz band all-to-gether, and using the wider 40mhz frequency, but it doesn’t really help.  The higher 5Ghz band is a more concentrated signal and therefore simply does not reach as far as the lower 2.4ghz band.  I wonder why all of these new products state that the 5Ghz range will increase your distance, when in fact it actually makes it worse?
So… basically, this router does nothing that it claims too and is basically rendered useless on any network with a VISTA machine.  This has not been addressed by any Linksys firmware updates or VISTA software updates so there is no reason to even consider using this router if you you’re using VISTA or some type of VISTA Media Center Extender such as the Linksys DMA2200.
Although, I’ve always sworn by Linksys in the past, the amount of wasted time, frustration, and horrible support has really changed my view about them.  I’ve reverted back to my old trustworthy WRT54g router and had to run cable through my house so that I wouldn’t have to box my DMA2200 extender up and let it collect dust in the attic.  It’s really disappointing that I spent all this money to buy this equipment specifically because they’re supposed to work together, but in fact they don’t.  Plus what’s the point of having top notch wireless equipment if you have to run cables in order for them to work?

I have fixed all the IP adresses to avoid the DHCP problem but I still have problems.
    I have sereval scenarioes:
    1. MC < 1Gb wire > WRT610N < 5.0n WIFI > MX
I can see HDTV on this one but it disconnects
    2. MC < 1Gb wire > WRT610N < 2.4b/g WIFI > MX
    No HDTV and disconnections
    3. MC < 2.4b/g WIFI > WRT610N < 2.4b/g WIFI > MX
No HDTV but no disconnections - but very slow and streaming like youtube
    4. MC < 100Mb wire > WRT610N < 2.4b/g WIFI > MX
No HDTV but nice picture - testing for disconnections right now - 30+ min.
    Result:
This test was very good. Stabil streaming, no disconnects for an hour. Won't support HDTV but the rest seem to work fine.
    5. MC < 100Mb wire > WRT610N < 5.0n WIFI > MX
Not tested yet - looking forward to this - might bring me HDTV.
    Result:
This gives HDTV but there is a problem with stability on the streaming but very difficult to see on the picture. Testing for disconnects - now tested for 30 min. - no disconnects.
    This looks really promissing.
I am pretty sure that the WRT610N have a problem in the switching part of the router specially when it has to switch from 1G to WIFI. I bought the WRT610N to get HDTV on WIFI and Cisco markets the DMA and WRT610N as a perfect match. But it definately have problems - i still do not understand their silence about this.
I will come back with the last results when I have them

  • Windows 7 as a media center extender?

I have a Vista Ultimate box that I use as my media center. I have a notebook with Windows 7 installed on it that I would like to use as a media center extender. Is this possible?
For the life of me I can't seem to figure it out. My Vista machine hasn't given me the notice of a new media center PC on the network like it does when a new Vista media center shows up...
    Appreciate any guidance....

Hi there, I asked the following question over at the Windows 7 beta QnA and got silence, and from what I am reading here, I thought perhaps you could answer. This may be an odd place to post new questions (in mid-discussion) but it seems on topic, and I didn't want to waste readers' time by posting a new topic.
Will Windows 7 stream to another PC or "Play To" recorded TV files that were recorded using WMC?Will
other Windows 7, Windows Vista, or Windows XP PCs be able to play
recorded TV streams from a Windows 7 machine over a home network?
    If
so, will those PCs be able to get all the show info such as title, time
and date, episode summary, etc in order to navigate and choose the
    correct recorded TV episode?
Another, similar question is will Windows
7 be able to act as a software-based media center extender for another
machine (Windows 7, Vista Home Premium or Ultimate, or XP MCE) running
    Windows Media Center?
One more question is...is any of this possible in Windows Vista? I have one PC with Vista that I use as my media center/DVR and my other systems in the house are running Xp or Mac O/S. I can share and then access the recorded TV folder via my network and play the files on the other systems in the house (yes, even the Mac) but I don't get any of the fantastic WMC front-end UI, which turns out to be more than just a pretty wrapper slapped on it, because it also gives specific episode names, recording dates, and episode summaries, and groups the episodes per series(if desired). When combing the files via a network share, the naming convention is all convoluted and the experience is not very intuitive. I could use an extender such as the xbox 360 to watch this stuff on tv, but it is more convenient to watching on my computers.

  • Can't get Xbox 360 Media Center Extender to work

I am using Windows 7 Ultimate x64.  This is a retail copy.  I had previously set up Windows Media Center and successfully set up my Xbox 360 as a Media Center Extender.
After a long hiatus of using Windows Media Center, I went to watch a movie in my media library through my Xbox 360.  It would appear to initially connect and then show the Windows Media Center loading screen and say "Contacting..."  After about 30 seconds, it would display an error asking me to make sure my Windows Media Center PC is turned on (it is).  I ran the Windows Media Center network test in the Xbox 360 and it tested fine.
I attempted to delete the Media Center Extender in WMC and set it up again, but it always fails with an error "An error was encountered while configuring your computer for use with this Extender" at the part where it says "Configuring your Extender".
I looked in the Event Viewer under the Media Center section and found event ID 543:

I also tried turning off the Windows firewall on the Windows Media Center PC, but this had no effect on the outcome.  I also tried deleting the Microsoft Windows Media Center Extender Host certificate and restarting the Network List Service, but these steps to did nothing to fix the issue.
I am using the same computer with the same NIC with the same Ethernet cable with the same SOHO router (Linksys WRT54GL) with the same Xbox 360.  Any advice would be welcome at this point.

  • Media Center vs. Front Row

I hate to say, I just watched the keynote, and Steve made a really thoughtless comment that got the crowd cheering.
He had a comparison of the iMac remote, and 2 different Windows XP Media Center remotes from HP and Gateway. He pointed out that the MC remotes had around 50 buttons, and the iMac remote had 6. This is an absurd comparison.
The Media Center remotes allow you to pause, play, record, rewind, and fastforward TV. They also have, EQ controls, volume, audio switching, video input, and many other useful controls.
There's no surround sound with an iMac. There's no hi-def inputs with an iMac. There's just volume, play, rewind, fastforward. (with the remote).
And yes, I own a Media Center PC, and such a copy Front Row is. He's bragging about it like it's new technology, when the Media Center has been around for 4 years or so. He even copied the in-menu interface (once you choose music or video, etc.).
    Vikram

Vikram's point was that Media Center has been out first for 4 years and Apple just NOW came out with it. And copied parts of it besides. By the way, other things, like Widgets, has been out for PC's a while before they were included in Tiger. Apple is not as great as they, and Steve Jobs, think they are. And everything Apple is still overpriced compared to PC's.

  • I purchased Windows 8 Prow/Media Center, now I can't get it to download

I purchased Windows 8 Pro and the Media Center pack and installed them on a computer which was recently stolen. Upon replacing the laptop with a similar machine I am unable to download Windows 8. I can connect to the site and the download begins,
but it estimates more than 12 hours for the download. The few times I've tried to wait it out, something
always happens to cause the download to fail. Other programs I have downloaded to replace the stolen ones have downloaded very quickly, under an hour for an above 1GB program, but Windows 8 is not hardly downloading at all. The new machine came preinstalled
with Windows 8.1, but won't upgrade to Pro w/Media Center. Am I going to have to install Windows 7 and then try upgrading again, or should I be able to reinstall the OS from the website even though the version being downloaded is Windows 8 and the current
    OS is Windows 8.1?

Thanks for your quick response, but I will not be purchasing
    anymore
(This is totally absurd, you guys can't even program your website to work right!)
    Microsoft
(Well since the buttons aren't working, I guess this will have to be done in bold type?!?) products in the future. I am totally fed up with Microsoft and Apple forcing their customers to constantly change to new OS's with all kinds of "bells and whistles"
that I don't and have never had need for and consequently new machines in order to use their computers. I haven't programmed for years, but I'm going to go to
    Linux anddliub
(why does this write backwards? That was supposed to be 'build') my own software. Terrible inconvenience, but maybe I can get a movement started!

  • Air Play on Windows XP Media Center 5.1

I installed AirExpress on a PC with Win XP Media Center 5.1 and use it receive sound waves on the Airexpress connected to my home WiFi.
At this time I can only send sound from Itunes by selecting the Airport Speakers option in the lower right corner of the program window.
How can I send sound from other WIndosw programs like my Pandora Program or AccuRadio? They send the sound to the default speakers connected to the back of the PC. How can I set up a device that is the same as the Itunes Airport Speakers option to send sount to?
    Thanks.

Hi, I have a windows xp media center computer and have had no problems installing and using iTunes. The music I buy from iTunes if I want it in my media center library, I use iTunes to burn it to disc and then import into my Windows Media Player / Windows Media Center library. The only problem I have is after I use iTunes to burn a CD, I have to reboot the computer before I can use another burner program to burn a disk. I do like the Windows Media Center interface, but have run into so much (unrelated trouble with Album Art being displayed that I am about ready to give up on it) But that is a whole 'nother oprah.
There must be some underlying reason that you are having trouble installing iTunes. Do you have all the Windows Media Center updates installed? There was one big update for MCE that I had to install after I purchased this computer. Have you done that? Was that able to be installed with no problems?
I am thinking that maybe you should completely uninstall all Apple software - and then delete the left over directories in your program folder and then start over from scratch. I vaguely remember having to do that for i believe it was iTunes version 5.
Good luck, and post back with results and let's see if we can't get this working for you.

  • Win XP Media Center Ed. & Adobe Reader 9.4/9.4.1 Updts Lock Up & Reader X 10.0.1 Install Question

What is the deal with Win XP Media Center Edition and Updates to Adobe Reader?  I have been unable to install Adobe Reader Updates 9.4 & 9.4.1 to Win XP Media Center Edition (32 bit - SP3) since last October!!!  The update starts to install and then locks up when it starts trying to Remove Shortcuts!  I have had to kill the update and then Adobe Reader does not function after that.  I have had to go back and run a System Restore for a date & time prior to the attempted update install, to get Adobe Reader working again.
I was going to try uninstalling Adobe Reader 9.3.4 and installing the latest Adobe Reader version X (10.0.1) - until I read the System Requirements. Only Win XP Home, Professional & Tablet PC Edition with Service Pack 3 (32 bit) are mentioned as valid operating systems.  Does this mean that version X (10.0.1) can't be installed on Windows XP Media Center Edition (32 bit) with SP3 installed???
Any help/info that you can provide would be greatly appreciated!

You're correct. Clean uninstall i referred to meant clean up every single trace of Adobe Reader in your program files, in your registry, in your application data folder, etc. CClearner is a good one. Apart from using it for cleaning up web and windows temp files, did you try to use their Registry fix feature?
What I am trying to say is that you should:
    -Uninstall Adobe
-Clear up any trace left by the program
    -Clear up Temp folder
    -Run Registry fix
    -Restart the computer
    -Reinstall the Adobe
That's all i can say. I am not saying that this will work for sure. It is just one of many resolution for you. Good luck!

  • Adding Media Center DVR

I currently have Fios with 3 TV's and 3 STD boxes @ $5.99 each per month. I would like to add the media center DVR and have some questions.
      1) Does the media center DVR @ $19.99 per month replace one of the STD boxes?
2)Is there any additional wiring needed to use multi room DVR? ( I do have FIOS internet as well )
    Thanks for any help

The $19.99 is the complete cost for the Multi-room DVR, but of course you need the additional SD or HD boxes on the other TVs, and they cost $$$ too.
There really isn't any "setup" required as far as I know. If the order is processed correctly, then you will have the multi-room function available automatically. However, I think it would be reasonable for you to ask the install tech to stay until you have verified that the multi-room function works (and keep in mind that, at least for right now, there are apparently several pretty serious bugs in the multi-room function, hopefully to be fixed in the "near" future, whatever that means).

  • Mega 180 Radio working under XP Media Center 2005

    Hello,
i'm quite fond about Windows XP Media Center 2K5 and would like it to control the Mega 180's radio unit. I would like to know if there are people that have already looked for ways to control the radio. It could be a start to implement some kind of Media Center plugin...
    Greetings,
    Peter Vrenken

the problem is the fact that the radio tuner isn't a "physical" device that Windows recognises
damn MSI and their proprietory hardware!! surely some sort of USB tuner "hardwired" to the USB controller would have been a better solution? grr, but then how would that have worked in Hi-Fi mode...

  • ITunes on windows XP Media Center

    Hi there,
hope you guys can help me...
I have a HP Laptop with Windows XP Media Center on it. But I really want to install iTunes, but it just can't do that.
So the magnificent people of HP (eeeerm irony?) have invented a program called HP Tunes. With this program I'm supposed to sync my iPhone and open my music library just like in iTunes.
BUT: Even this progam doesn't work! It says "Go back to the home screen. There are problems with iTunes. Open iTunes"
    I CAN'T OPEN iTUNES YOU HP-FOOLS!!!
Anyway... Does someone know how to install iTunes or HP TUnes so I can sync my iPhone??
    Thanks very much!!

  • Windows 7 Media Center Not Downloading EPG listing

I have virtually no EPG listings in WMC 7 I have tried rescan the TV Signals, deleted the epg listings directory, run the Object Store Recovery Task I've run MC Update and I've tried turning off the firewalls. The file downloads successfully according
the the Microsoft Event Viewer but the guide is empty except for a few channels that show the current program and the next one.
All I've succeeded in doing is wasting hours of my time, loosing the UK HD channels that WMC 7 ignores and loosing the favourite channels.
    Thanks for this Microsoft

    Ok a few people have asked for some simple steps to get EPG Collector working to get the EPG in WMC working, I've laid it out in step by step instructions, should take a couple of hours to do;
EPG Collector Setup – UK Freesat
    Download EPG Collector, your first port of call is the sourceforge home and download the latest version (4.0), if your using windows 8 (like me) you will also need to download the fixpak;
    http://sourceforge.net/projects/epgcollector/files/V4.0/
Unpack and install EPG Collector, if you are applying the fixpack unzip it and copy and paste the contents of the zip folder into the EPG collector install folder, which typically can be found at; C:\Program Files (x86)\Geekzone\EPG Collector
Run the application by clicking (depending on what version of windows you have) Start -> All Programs -> EPG Collector -> EPG Center
Click File -> Create Collection Parameters
Click UK – FreeSat, then ‘OK’
On the tuning tab I left the default selected ‘Use any available tuner’, if you have a combination of different tuners, you may need to just select the freesat tuners, otherwise just leave the settings on this tab alone.
Select the output tab and select ‘Import the data to windows media center directly’, and the ‘flag all programmes as part of a series’, do NOT select ‘automatically map EPG data to channels’ which sounds useful but from what I’ve heard really isn’t and
    messes up the channel lineup.
Select the ‘lookups’ tab and select ‘Movie lookup’ and ‘tv series lookup’
Select the ‘advanced’ tab and select ‘use freeset Huffman tables’
Select File -> Save, I saved my config as ‘EPG Collector’, which made sense to me.
Select Run -> Collect EPG Data, you should now see it doing ‘stuff’, it takes about 10 minutes or so, I guess depending on your setup, when it’s finished if it didn’t have any problems it will say  something to the effect of exiting with code
0, which sounds bad but it means it worked basically.
Assuming you didn’t experiment with letting it map the EPG data to the channels (I don’t recommend it) you now need to go into Media Center and re map the listings, it probably will absorb a couple of hours, these steps are for WMC 8, but 7 should be
the same, and I would assume Vista, load the program guide, right click on the channel on the left and click ‘Edit Channel’
Click ‘Edit Listings’ and select from the list the appropriate channel where it is followed by ‘-EPG Collector’ for example ‘BBC 1 London-EPG Collector’, one tip is that, at least in WMC 8 tapping the first letter of the channel jumps through the list,
e.g. tapping ‘b’ if your looking for bbc listings, saves a lot of time, nearly all the channels are there.
Click Save, and Save again and voila you should have the guide data for that channel, repeat this task for the other channels and your sorted.
Every time the EPG Collector runs it will update the EPG in WMC and you won’t have to fiddle with that mapping again, the next task is of course to automate running EPG collector so you don’t have to remember to run it yourself, I haven’t figured out the
‘easy’ steps for this part yet, so in the meantime just run the program each day to keep the data topped up.
