Media consolidation - HELP!

I'm about to start work on a huge project - a documentary that has been digitized (200 tapes worth) into 7 external drives of varying sizes. Since I'm taking the project to Argentina to work on it there, I would like to avoid taking all those drives with me (the producers won't let me even if I wanted to) and instead transfer the media to a single drive or two at most. My idea is to somehow make the media low res so that it would fit. But also I want it to still link to the already existing project (someone was working on this already before me). Ideally, I could send the producers the project file from Argentina and they would be able to open it on their system (with the high res media) in the U.S.
Is this even possible? Has anyone attempted this before? Any help, suggestions, guidance would be enormously appreciated.

I do just that. Recompress everything to Offline RT. With 200 tapes, this will take a while!

Media Consolidation time

It's time for some media consolidation.
I have a 13 part series shot on DV. I have a master Project with all bins and sequences, graphics etc. We have shot about a hundred reels so far (I anticipate at least another 20) I have 1.5tb of storage.
I'm about half way through and shooting is still going on.
I don't want to run out of storage space and am concious that I have lots of footage that hasn't made into the cuts that I need to get rid of.
It is a property restoration show that follows projects over as much as a year so I will need to use shots from the first day in the last programme etc so I can't simply use the media manager to chuck away media used in a sequence because I might have used it in another episode.
So how do I simply chuck away the shots that I haven't used?
I had the foresight to give each shot a real name in the clip name (RN23 exteriors) so tracking shots down is easier.
I'll be frank - the media manager has me stumped -I've read Larry Jordans guise, the FCP manual, a couple of other things I've seen and still I have zero confidence.
Any thoughts, anyone?

I don't find there to be anything mysterious about Media Manager. It's consistently worthless.

Evidence: The language used at the interface and the operating presentation of Apple's MM suggests it was created by non-Macintosh people who knew nothing about video for a non-video application and then (miserably) shoehorned into FCP.
We hear endless complaints about Media Manager.
We hear no positive things about it, none.
And yet Media Manager appears to function flawlessly at the big houses where FCP is the video workhorse. Why isn't there more and louder squealing from the major players in the business? Paranoia, but I think there IS another version of FCP.

Media sync - help

I have a couple of questions;
1) all of a sudden I cannot sync any music files. the BB software says " Music services failed to load, an unexpected error occurred" Could this have occurred when I took the 6.0 upgrade? How do I fix it?
2) I've read that I can sync my music files from Windows Media Player, but I can't get it to work. What do I need to do? I found this process much easier on my old Palm Treo.

Also, check that you are using only root USB ports...no hubs (sometimes the front-side ports are hubs...use a rear USB port). And make sure to try disabling USB power management in your system configuration (Device Manager).
Apologies in advance if this is redundant -- there's no way to be sure if you've already seen and tried these.

TS1538 apple ipod nano model a1285 with windows visita not downloading audiobook using overdrive media consol, help!

My apple nano 4th generation was working fine until about 2 weeks ago I downloaded a new updated from apple ?, after that I lost everthing, I've worked over 30 hours trying all suggestion including removing in sequence all apple related programs. My current driver is 6.0.6002.18112. Can anyone help me?

Nomad Jukebox Zen Xtra VS Winows Media Player - Help?

I have a 40gig Nomad Jukebox Zen Xtra - a computer crash a year ago resulted in a replacement by the computer company - and it came with Windows Media Player.... when I tried to run it and had already installed the Creative software/Music library - Media Player crashed my computer every time - had to uninstal...,. now - that computer is defecti've and has just been replaced again by the maker - and before I load the Creatai've Software wondered if this is what is interfering with Media Player? Does anyone know? When I buy music it looks for Windows Media Player I believe - and I can play it and transfer the music in Creative program - BUT - it no longer lists my music library as single songs but as folders - and I have to go specifically into a remote folder to try to find the downloaded music and transfer to the Nomad....
Any help is appreciated..... I'm lost!

The firmware update only works on a windows XP machine.
you also need to have Windows media player 0 installed
you must not have windows media player or windows media player runtime lurking in your windows XP add/remove programmes bit on the control panel.
if you do have WMP first remove it ( roll back) then re-boot, then remove windows media player runtime ( rioll back) and re-boot.
open windows media player, if it is windows media player 0 then you should be OK, if its windows media player 9 you need ot download and install windows media player 0.
Check again to make sure that windows media player and windows media player runtime are not in the add/rmove programs.
Back up everything on the player, all music, playlists and data files.
update the firmware.
if it stalls part way, like it did for me the last time i updated a Zen Xtra ( last weekend -installing a new motherboard ) dont panic.
it will go to rescue mode, close the firmware update, the player will go to rescue mode, then re-satart the update, on the zen xtra, slect re-load OS then on the firmware update click on English. then slect re-load os on the player.
make sure that the player is fully charged, and that the mains charger is also attached.
just out of interest, when you remove the front panel on your zen xtra to get to the battery, does the headphone jack ( visable through a hole in the top right) have a blob of red paint on

I tried to update my iPhone 4 to iOS 5.1.1 and it wanted to delete all of my media. So i quickly unplugged it from my laptop so it wouldn't delete anything. Now any time i try to use it, it wont let me of course i dont want to delete my media. HELP!

Please help! I don't want to delete my media, but i want to use my phone! Is there a way? Every time i turn it on a picture shows the iPhone cord being plugged into the iTunes symbol. (Meaning that it wants me to plug it back in).

if its telling you to plug into itunes then you have to restore it that way. do you back your phone up using itunes or i cloud. if you have a back up you are good to go. To check if you have a back up
Windows> Go into itunes under EDIT>Preference>Devices and your back ups will be listed there
Mac> go to itunes under Itunes>Preference>Devices and your back up will be listed there

XBOX 360 Media Sharing Help

After spending 4 hours on the phone with Linksys and Microsoft, I am still unable to get my Xbox 360 to connect to my PC. Our network is set up correctly with another PC that is connected wireless and of course an XBOX 360. So I am able to access the internet on the other PC, and connect to XBOX live on the 360. I have opened all ports, disabled all firewalls (ya, im just waiting to get hacked by this point), and still can not get my computer to connect to media share (yes, I enabled the 360 in WMP as well). The X Box 360 recognizes the PC (as in my PC name shows up my tv screen in 360 menu) but it just wont connect for some bizarre reason. I have gotten to the end of both help scripts by Microsoft and Linksys, which I mean both guys on the phone didnt have any answers or any suggestions other than to call the other company for help. If anyone has any suggestions whatsoever, PLEASE, I beg of you!

Found something that worked
I've got a 3rd party firewall running, disabling it didn't give access to the xbox, but by adding access to a service, not port forwading, in it, I've now got access
I've just allowed all access to a the static IP adress I've set on my Xbox 360 and now it goes through.
I repeat, it's not port forwarding like almost everyone says, it's allowing access from that address to the computer, just be careful to set only the address of the Xbox, not all internet.

File Import Error - Adobe Media Encoder, help!

I'm at a complete loss. AME worked very well for me for a long time and booting it up yesterday gave me a paralyzing error.
Upon trying to import an MOV, MP4, and later a WMV, I received the following error:
File Import Error
The file C:\Users\tj\Desktop\New folder\SH_GS_PeekPlay_DEMO_720.mp4 could not be imported. Could not open source file. Please check that file exists with correct permissions.
I've tried everything I can think of:
1. Moved the file off the server and onto my desktop.
2. Double checked file permissions (all of which I have)
3. Uninstalled AE and Premiere to try to get rid of Media Encoder.
4. Searched for a way to uninstall AME so I could put a fresh install (can't find how to do this)
5. Manually updated AME
6. Reboot (multiple times between these steps)
7. Contact customer support - no help thus far.
I'm running Windows 7 64bit with Adobe CC and AME 7.0.1.58

Tried that as well.
To rule everything out, I had the files placed:
1. On company internal server
2. External Harddrive connected through Firewire
3. Internal Hard Drive (with OS)
4. Internal secondary Hard Drive (data only)
5. On Desktop (technically 1st internal drive)
I have since fixed this by uninstalling every single Adobe application (including Flash and Air) and redownloading and installing each.

Exporting Photo Gallery from LR3 into established webpage DWcs5 via Insert Media SWF, help?

This is what it's stuck as a spinning loading circle, but never loads!
The images are all resized to max dimension of 800px, so it's not a size>loading issue. I've Put all files, even dependents (as that helped before).

The template that I'm using is a user created one, but basically the Pure White, but shut off rows and columns and turn all the font and everything but the photo borders and the button directions to white. You should end up with nothing but the picture with a border and the buttons below it. Again, it was a lightroom flash gallery. If you look on the website now, I substituted a simpleviewer gallery, so don't use that as a reference anymore. =P What it basically showed up as was the spinning loading circle, but it worked in lightroom fine. Although! It did Not work in Lightroom's Preview in browser. The page opened and remained blank without the loading symbol.
Identity Plate: Off
Picture size: X-L (tried with all sizes, really)
Quality: 80% (have increased and decreased)
Sharpening: Standard (tried low already)
Watermarking: Off
There are 9 images 800px at max point apiece. I'm exporting, not uploading it, to my site root folder in DW for the main page. Then insert>media>swf so on and so forth. =]

New application of cs4 fails to load media encoder, Help!

Just purchased and installed CS4 web premium, when I select Media encoder it starts to load and then says it has encountered an error. The message is ..\..\src\Init.cpp-24 with a continue button when I hit the button to continue it says it must shut down. proceeding closes the program. Been all around the loop starting last night at 1am then to tech support who sent me here after 2 hrs on hold. If I am not in the right forum please help and redirect. Thanks for your thoughts. Media Manager help!!

I want to create independent media files from subclips in my FCP project with Media Manager.
Since I did not understand this process in the beginning I have logged and filed all the subclips in a variety of bins regardless of there master clip origins. I then cleared any subclips that I knew that I wasn’t going to use at all.
Is the only way to do this Media Manager process now to delete all the master clips at once and then choose all the subclips at once and ask Media Manager to create new media files for each subclip thus deleting any subclip material that I cleared?
Is there a way to do this one master clip at a time? I have about 30 hours of total material and am nervous about doing this all at once. Plus I am almost out of room and need to capture more video.

Media Manager is a sleazy non-feature. It works but it's indecipherable
Try this:
Create a new project. Capture two or three clips in the same way you did the originals and use MM on those till you get the hang of it.
You will be able to do what you want to do. The MM section in the manual is quite long, I can't possibly make it any shorter.
There's a section on Media Manager at kenstone.net, too.
You can do it. However, I strongly urge you to borrow or steal an external FW drive.

ITunes Library Consolidation Help

Hello there, I am new to the forum. I've been researching a little bit with little luck so I thought I'd try here.
I am about to finish building a new quad core computer and would like to move my 72 gb library over to my new computer. The only thing is I also want to keep all the song information (especially the date added and such)..but I don't know if it's possible...I just wish I could somehow replicate my library because my library is organized by the dates in which each song was added...
I've read about Library Consolidation...but I'm not sure if what I have in mind of doing is correct...
So basically..this is what I have in mind...
I'm going to buy a small (150 gb) internal hard drive and put it in my old computer. I will press the button that says "keep everything organized" and will change the itunes folder to be assigned within the new internal hard drive. I will then consolidate everything into the new drive.
Right there I have a question. Is it still okay to consolidate even though the music is all in different places? Barely any of the music is in my iTunes folder (most is in different partitioned drives), and so I am afraid if I try consolidating the files iTunes will freeze or not know what to do.
Back to what I would do...so then I would take the new hard drive which hopefully has all the music and install it in the new computer. I would then install iTunes on the new computer, and simply insert all the songs from the hard drive? In doing that, wouldn't all the files' information be gone? (Most importantly date added, because the date would now be different?) The only reason I really need date added is because I initially add all of the songs backwards so that they play in order when the songs are sorted by date added. Otherwise, all the songs would be out of order...
So yeah...I basically was wondering if the process I have in mind is correct, and also if theres any way to keep the file information.
Lastly, what does export library mean?
I'm very sorry for the long post, but I have been trying to find out how I would go about doing this with no luck from anywhere...I hope you guys can help me out. I appreciate any help.

Yes, that's exactly what the Consolidate Library command is for.

The ratings, Date Added, etc are store in the itunes library.itl file. That is another important file to copy over.

The XML file can recreate a library but the Date Added will go missing. The ITL is the important one.

It exports a list of your library into an XML file, so other application that read XML could use it.

Mastering Media Quality - Help please!

Hi, this is a little off topic but we would really value the opinions of other Pro users who master DVD's on Superdrive Mac's with DVDSP. We have increasing problems with DVD-R Masters created over the last couple of years in that when new they duplicated fine in our duplicator but now when we re-visit them to run further copies (using a Siren Technology 1-9 duplicator with Pioneer drives) they are increasingly failing to copy.
Previously we have used Verbatim media but had a bad batch and switched to Fuji. Now both brands of disc are starting to fail after short periods in storage (on a shelf in proper library cases out of direct sunlight, not near moisture etc - next to BetaSP and DVCAM tapes that are lasting far far longer!).
We are getting lots of conflicting advice and thoughts, from people blaming the Powerbook and PowerMac that created the masters to a potential problem with the duplicator and blank media.
So I would really like to know what other semi-pro people use as their mastering media, and is anyone else getting problems with older projects?
I think a switch to some high quality media (I'm thinking HHB) would be a good place to start - any suggestions most welcome! Thanks in advance.

Hi Iain-
Many professionals choose to master down to DLT tape. Many of the large replication houses require this as the master format. The dlt drives are not very cheap, but if you are in a location in which tapes seem to last longer, this may be a better option. However, I still master to dvd-r and have not seen the same type of problems. I use a bravo duplication system and have got consistently even results. I make sure that all the dvd-r masters are stored vertically to prevent warping. It may be advantageous to use good cases as well. We've been using RiTek media for the duplication and even though its cheap it seems to be holding up well. However for the masters out of the computer we use apple blank dvds just to insure maximum compatibility with the machines. Hope this helps!

Audigy 2 windows media player help ple

Hi, i have sound blaster Audigy 2 and when in windows media player or other media players whenever i use the search bar ( to ff/or play diff part of film etc) the sound goes really loud even though i've not touched the volume control, just the search slider. Does anyone know why this happens and how i can stop it's, very frustrating if im listening or watching and want to goto another part of song/film, i want volume to stay on what i started at.

I used to have this problem too and it's due to some codec pack(Klite) I have installed. Reverting to an older version fix the problem for me.

Downloading windows media player help!

A lot of movies I try to watch on the web require WMP. I went to Microsofts page and downloaded the OSX version. It went straight to my desktop(looks like this: windows media.sitx) When I click on it, it give me an error saying ERROR OPENING MOVING. It looks like it is trying to use quiktime to open it. I am new to mac, so if anyone has any ideas how I can download WMP it would really help thanks!!!

If you have an Intel Mac then you probably don't even want to fool with WMP as it is not universal and Microsoft has stopped development of the product for the Mac. You might try Flip4Mac instead.
