Media Encoder: timeline cuts off at 3:10 for 38 min AVI

Hello,
I have searched the forums and the web in general but cannot find anyone who has either reported or solved a similar issue to mine.  I thus fear I am simply doing something really stupid and just need a nudge in the right direction!
Trying to use Media Encoder to turn an AVI produced by Camtasia Studio into an MP4.  The AVI is 1.8GB and loads and runs fine in Windows Media Player, start to finish.  I can queue it up in Media Encoder and select all settings BUT the timeline in the Media Encoder only goes to 3 minutes 10 seconds...it just doesn't seem to 'see' the other 35 minutes of the AVI!  If I execute the encoding, I get a perfectly fine MP4 of the first 3:10 of the AVI.
What am I doing wrong that is causing Media Encoder to only recognize the first 3:10 of my monster big AVI?
By the way, I am going from a Camtasia Studio 6 AVI to MP4 using Media Encoder because MP4 direct from Camtasia come out with stutters (video and audio halts) whereas this double step process has worked in the past to make good MP4s.
Any help is appreciated,
Dean

Dean,
I sometimes encounter this, when I have converted footage to DV-AVI Type II (usually from some crappy CODEC, like DivX). Usually, those converted AVI's are just fine, but on occasion, I'll get one that does just as you describe - the Duration in PrPro is truncated, and at a point similar to yours.
I have found that if I Import that DV-AVI Type II into PrElements, and then immediately Export it to the same exact format/CODEC, DV-AVI Type II, with Recompress turned OFF, the new DV-AVI Type II now has the correct Duration in PrPro.
Why? I have never found the reason. I have tested the two DV-AVI's (the one from the converter and the one run through PrE), and they match up perfectly in all respects. DupeFile Finder says they are identical. G-Spots reports the exact same specs., including the Duration. For some reason, PrPro gets the wrong Duration. This goes back to PrPro 2.0. It only happens on occasion, and I'll often have 10 files from a client's shoot, where 9 convert perfectly, but one will show this problem.
I have tried several other conversion programs, but the same odd behavior happens, seemingly randomly.
Other than that workflow, I have no real help. I also do not know how to find the files that will report the wrong Duration to PrPro - it's a crap shoot. I just check Durations, knowing that I may have one offending file, that needs to go through PrE, which ALWAYS sees the Duration correctly, and then writes that in a form that PrPro can see properly.
Good luck,
Hunt

  • Why is Media Encoder app not listed in the apps for download in CC?

Media Encoder application does not appear in the list of apps I can download from Creative Cloud.
It appears as separate application in the Adobe products, so NOT part of Premiere Pro or similar.
How can I get to download the Media Encoder app?

Peferling... I have a positive update! I went to the area that typically made things die. I noticed it was at the tail end of where I inserted a sequence into another sequence. I also noticed I had three tracks in that section with graphics. So I copied all the tracks from the inserted sequence... then removed the inserted sequence and re-inserted the actual tracks. At this point I no longer had an inserted sequence. I then simplified the three tracks of graphics into one. Re-applied my transitions and did last tweaking. I once again tried exporting as H.264 HD... et voila! It worked! Something must have been breaking it.
For now I'm okay and have been able to export into other formats. I want to thank you so much for your input. Regards, Nelson

  • I need help with the Media Encoder, but do not see a forum for that

I'm having difficulty with some large Windows Media Files--200 to 300 MB--using the CS4 Media Encoder to encode into FLV. Is there a file size limit for source files? I moved the files locally to remove any network issues. If this is not the correct forum, pelase advise.

  • Buttons cut off in Dialogue Box for Mail

Hey, I was using Mail to send out an email to my the people within my company, and a dialogue box came up saying cannot send through the selected server. Thats was fine, but unfortunately I can't close the dialogue box because the buttons at the bottom are cut off, since there were too many addresses 150+ of them.
Is there a way i can scroll down a dialogue box to close it so I can resume using mail? thanks

    Greetings,
Unfortunately, there's no way to access those buttons to close the box; you'd have to just quit Mail and restart it.
But instead of putting the addresses of everyone in the To: field, you should just put one address there (your own) and BCC all the rest of the addresses. That way, I believe if this happens again, you won't have all those addresses popping up in a long list that you can't close.

  • Media Encoder is cutting my source file short-

I am trying to convert some VOB files from a DVD of a performance we have done.  The files convert to H264 ok but there are a couple of problems.  The first is that the last file on the DVD is being cut short.  When I open the file on the DVD the video software I am using tells me the file is 2:45 long.  When I run Encoder and look at the time in the display window, it tells me the file length is 2:33 seconds long.  Where is the last 15 second going?
The other problem may not be an Encoder problem, but from looking at various posts, it might be.
The audio on all the files I have encoded off this DVD have the audio completely messed up.  It is not in sync with the video at all.  I've played the DVD and the audio is sync'd up fine.
What is it that I am missing?
    Thanks in advance.

i think i have the same problem, but more severe. Mi VOB file lenght like 29 minutes but in the encoder it's showed as 26 seconds... please someone help!!!

  • How to encode Final Cut Sequences as MPEG-2 for DVD Pro

I am using Final Cut Studio (non-Universal version)
I am wanting to encode a Final Cut sequence
as an MPEG-2 for DVD Studio Pro 4
I don't want to render the Sequence, I merely
want to select the Entire Sequence and encode
it as an MPEG-2 wherein I can adjust the settings
    custom-style
    How do I do this?
    thanks

QuickTime MPEG-2 is no longer included in new installs.
    Read Apple's info doc.
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=301871
Because of the superior capabilities of Compressor, the QuickTime MPEG-2 encoder is superfluous and is not included with new installations of DVD Studio Pro 4 or Final Cut Studio.

  • Only firefox opens, oscillates on and off, and locks up for ~10 min

OK, I open Firefox and 5-8 sites (like 'inbox') start blinking on and off. When this happens the program is locked up. Clicking anywhere does not interupt the blinking. I had a computer guy in and he said "Oh, its not a virus it is your 'content cache' that is overloaded and the blinking is related to overload". So I increased the cache up to 1024 MB, even though I'm only using 125 MB of cache disk space. This all occurs on 3 Macs in the same room, and doesn't happen on Safari ever, so I don't think it is the Vanderbilt University server that I route through to the internet. So it acts like a virus, moves like a virus, and my only option has been reduced to nuking Firefox for another browser, but i would rather not do that. Any thoughts?

  • Media Encoder gets stuck!!

I'm getting frustrated.  I have a 1hr long project that i'm trying to export and been fighting with it for a week.
Media encoder starts its work, it goes on for hours and eventually, at some random point it just stops encoding.  It doesn't freeze, it doesn't show any error, it doesn't physically "stop" but the output preview just freezes on a random frame (different each time) and the 'remaning' export time instead of getting shorter just gradually gets longer and keeps increasing to show that it's gonna take hundreds of hours to finish...  I didn't trust the preview/remaining time so i kept it on and encoding for 48 hours - at that time it showed that it was gonna take 600 something hours to finish and was still increasing.  ridiculous.
I'm on an HP elitebook workstation.  Nvidia Quadro 2000, 8GB ram.  Win7, Using Premiere CS6.  My sequence is pretty heavy - 1hr long, 9 video tracks, 10 or so audio tracks.  Most clips have MB Looks color correction on them, some clips have stabilization, few clips use MB MisFire effect.  95% of my footage are 1080p or 720p MOV files from the Canon 7D and from GoPro.  Few other clips are different formats (flv/mp4) and i have some stills + tiff timelapses and imported photoshop graphics.  Also, just a few AfterEffects clips imported into my timeline.  It's pretty heavy but i exported my rough cuts of this project many times before - most recently with the 720p youtube HD preset - always took a while, but it always DID export.
Now I'm trying to export with the 1080p YoutubeHD preset (except i checked 'render in max quality') and I also tried exporting as 1080p H.264 - and it just will not export...  It's been a week now, i tried many times, i deleted the cache, i started a new project and imported the old one into it, nothing makes any difference and i'm out of ideas...
*** Few potential clues i need to mention:
    - For some time now I've been getting the [..\..\src\TickTime.cpp-207] error whenever opening the premiere project.  There are several discussions on this error on the forums - so far no solution and no clear source of the problem (aparrently sth to do with stabilization).  But after clicking 'ok' on the pop up error message continuously for a minute or so, the error goes away and the project doesn't seem affected in any way.
    - a couple of my previous exports of this project had 1-2 clips that looked 'scrambled' in the finished exported file.  It was mostly the stills.  This only happened 2 times though, many other exports were just fine.  not sure why...
    i'd much appreciate any advice...

Sounds exactly like what is happening to me.  This is frustrating because it was a 30 hour encoding process and the place where it is stuck is right at the very end of the sequence on the 2nd pass, although there is still about 12% of the progress bar remaining.  I guess that this is where it takes all its work and puts the separate files into the single video file. I really don't want to go through this again. The final video file is showing up though and is shown having the size that I am expecting it to be.
Any workarounds to somehow get this unstuck?  I am hesitant to just try and open the file. I am going to try a couple of things and if I am successful at getting this to finish without restarting then I will be sure to post it here.
Also, I don't know if this has anything to do with this problem, but I looked at my system Activity Monitor, and there is a CPU process highlighted in red, it states:
         Adobe QT32 Server (not responding)
    Thirty minutes later...
I was incorrect above as to the actual problem.  I paused the queue encoding that was stuck, then opened up the project again in Premiere Pro only to discover that there was an offline still image which I stupidly had renamed during the day. So I renamed the file back to its original name, reconnected the picture, saved the PP project. Then I started the encoding back up and still no luck.
So I paused the encoding again, went back into the PP project and rendered just the area under question, saved it, and exported it into the queue. Then just to be safe I went to the paused item in AME, and duplicated it adding another version into the queue.
Then I unpaused the encoding and ... SUCCESS!!  Not sure which of the final steps did the trick, but I am guessing that it was the rendering of the part of the sequence that it was stuck on.  Hope this helps someone.

  • Freezes when exporting .mov files in CS4 / Adobe Media Encoder

For the past 7 hours now I have been trying every internet remedy for the following problem, and was wondering if any of you nice people could help:
I just came back from a ski trip, and wanted to make an edit featuring my fiends. I recorded large parts of the trip on my new iPhone, both in 720p 120fps (120.15fps, h.264 1280*720) and the normal 1080p 30fps. iPhone files are in the .mov format. I also recorded some parts on a GoPro hero hd2 camera at both 720p 60fps and 1080p 30fps. GoPro files are in the MP4 format, and i've never had a probvlem with them.
Now all imports fine into premiere pro, and although I had a few problems with freezing while editing initially, this was quickly solved by terminating all unused (non-adobe) processes in task manager.
So I spent a good 4 hours making a 2.5 minute edit of our day, and wanted to export it.
So I selected the sequence, and went file>export>media, selected all of the preferences i wanted for exporting, and sent it to the Adobe media encoder.
The media encoder loads the files for a few seconds, and then starts the encoding process. And promptly freezes. It freezes at around 10-20 seconds (depending on export preferences) after starting to encode, and never restarts. i can then pause the encode, but cancelling it crashes adobe media encoder and subsequently also crashes Premiere Pro.
I may be mistaken here, but I have a strong suspicion that It is quicktime that is causing all this.
    So I tried the following:
    - reinstalling, downgrading, updating, etc. Quicktime
    - renaming file extensions from .mov to .mp4
    - all sorts of export preferences, from image sequences to dvd to blueray and dv. (Image sequences, interestingly, occasionally export to about half a minute into the video(also depending on preferences), then freeze)
    - crossing my fingers
    - checking for gaps in video, found none
    - updating premiere pro and media encoder
    - throwing my mouse at the wall in frustration
    - making a new project with different settings and copying in the sequence
    - disabling "Include source xmp metadata"
    - making a new user account and trying it there
Is there anything else I can try?
Could I copy the project itself into a different program (e.g. iMovie or Windows Movie Maker) and export from there?
Is there an alternative to Adobe media encoder?
    Need more information?
    Thanks for the help!
    Specs:
    Premiere version: 4.2.1
    Encoder version: 4.2.0.006
    Comp specs:
    16Gb ram
    quad core i5
256 Gb solid state (system, program files are here)
2TB HDD (video files, scratch disk are here)
    Nvidia gtx 660 graphics
    Windows 64 bit
    1 monitor

I bought quicktime pro today to try this, but to no avail. it just freezes up again during export.
I tried some other fixes on that page, like renaming files to .mpg extension, which worked once during an export of a test sequence (although everything was shifted and it cut off the export at the gopro footage).
Is there any way I can export this project to another program to export it from there perhaps?
    Thanks for the help!

  • Linear workflow issues with Media Encoder CC 2014

I'm using After Effects CC 2014 and doesn't seem to be the option anymore to export via AE to H264. There used to be a button in the preferences to enable outdated codecs... not there anymore with CC 2014. So... I added my renders into Media Encoder. The problem is that it is not calculating my project working in Linear Workflow so all my renders are very dark & wrong colors.
Anyone find a work around for this? is there a button in Media Encoder that I need to switch on for linear workflow?

I've been validating in QT, but per your comment I opened up in VLC player as well. VLC player does playback the correct color. I attached SS of same lossless rendered video from AE open in AE, QT, VLC, and then the rendered H264 in QT & VLC  from AME in one screen shot. You can see that the H264 file from AME is always just a little bit off when opened in QT or Preview mode (OSX) or uploaded to Vimeo. The rendered H264 file is just the lossless file being encoded into H264 via AME.
That's great that VLC player will playback the correct color, but when uploading to Vimeo, the color shifts as well during playback. I've never had this issue when rendering to H264 directly from AE before. I'm a little new to AME so I'm not sure if there is a setting I am missing or is there a limitation to the H264 codec where I've never noticed the slight color shift? Is there anyway to get a H264 file that will play back via Vimeo/QT without the color shift?

  • Adobe Media Encoder CC Fails To Dynamically Link Embedded AE Comps Within PR.

When launching a PR project in Media Encoder to kick off a render.  The dynamic link engine loads the PR sequence just fine but during the render it fails to read any clips that were "relaced with AE comp", instead inserting an "offline media" plate.  Launching the PR project and reviewing as well as rendering from within PR works fine.  Please note that this worked fine in Adobe Media Encoder CS6.
    *****Edit
In doing some tests to consistently replicate the problem, it turns out that AE CC has to be open WITH the replaced clip comps loaded at the time PR OR Media Encoder is running with projects that contain the "replaced with AE comps" footage.  Repeating the test with AE CC closed at the time yields the "offline media" result.  This is definitely a bug I'd say.  AE should not have to be launched with the project files loaded up in order for any dynamically linked comps to work.
    ****Edit
Please note the entire product chain is CC.  Thank you.

    Update.....
    Problem solved.
It turns out that any dynamically linked CC apps must be run by the same user on the same machine in order to work properly.  In this case, PR and AME were being run as a standard user on the workstation while AE was being run as administrator via the shortcut launch properties.  The latter being necessary to have certain plugins function properly in AE CC.  Modifying the AE shortcut to not run as administrator resolves dynamic linking issues.
Although it can be argued that logically all Adobe apps should be run by the "same user" on the workstation, it would be nice for the dynamic link engine to be more "real world" about linking projects on the same workstation in the case where a particular resource needs to be launched as an administrator.  Security considerations in towe, this ain't top secret government or banking data risk management folks.  Lighten up.  Maybe a little warning box that pops up and says "such and such needs to be run as administrator....do you allow?".....after all this is EXACTLY what the OS does anyway when you launch as anyone other than the administrator from a shortcut.  Quite reasonable for you (Adobe) to simply cascade the behavior.

  • Adobe MEdia Encoder Crashes with big files inputed

    Hello,
There isn't a forum for the Adobe Media Encoder, so I thought this would be a good spot. I am an after effects and Premiere user who likes the idea Adobe seems to have of using the media encoder to cover all my encoding needs.
My typical workflow, especially since these days I'm doing more shorter form animations, is to render out to a Quicktime Animation codec file as my main archive file. From there, output all the various different web versions, flv, etc from that core archive file. Since my projects usually aren't running more than 5 minutes, this leaves me with a nice 3 - 7gig file.
Problem: I'm running CS4 and the media encoder crashes when I input files that are in this file size range. The program locks up when I push start que, and then eventually crashes. Works fine with smaller size files that are about under a gig.
I can run a render out of after effects, which seems to be more stable. But I'd love to be able to use this great new tool.
Here's my machine specs if it helps:
    PC
    Intel Quad Core Q9550 @ 2.83 ghz
    4gB RAM
    Windows Vista 64 bit ultimate
All updates current for CS4 apps as of 01/30/08
Running Adobe Media Encoder V 4.01.078
Hard drives are nothing special. 7200 rpm western digital internal and external. I've tried all sorts of hard drive configurations, where the input is coming from, where it's going, etc. No difference.
I have been experimenting with using Lossless AVI's as my "uncompressed" archive file. Works well, but same crashing with the Media Encoder.
Also tried experimenting with frame size alterations during encoding, no difference there. Also, whatever the output codec is, be it FLV, H264, etc. no difference.
Anyone have any thoughts or have experienced similar issues? I hope all my MAC friends aren't right, seems like all my attempts to streamline my workflow with this CS4 and beefy PC combo are crashing and burning.
Anyone else feeling this pain, or have recommendations?
    Thanks,

Thomas, thanks for your suggestions on Vista optimization. That Sheer Codec looks nice, but hard justify the cost when I've been working for years with essentially uncompressed codecs that work well. Will play more though to see if the cost would actually pay off in the long run though.
In general I made a decision that it was too early to throw in the towel on my old uncompressed codecs. The Quicktime animation codec has always been for me the safest, most universally accepted, and most reliable "uncompressed" codec. It's always worked in the past, not gonna give up just cuz media Encoder CS4 has troubles.
Mylenium, thanks for the reminder about the silly platform wars. I've always felt the same as you, but when I'm stressing sometimes the silly propaganda can get to me. Makes me forget that no matter what system ya got, it never works perfect!
Here's an update. I have trying my best to learn more about the bug and have come to some interesting realizations. The AME does work with larger files, just not the larger files that I had been using at the current moment. Older files of mine as big as 20GB can be inputed into AME with fine results.
This being said, it scratches out most of the RAM overload thoughts with AME.
The difference with my current files that were causing AME crashes: larger than a few GB, came from AE, had the 1.21 pixel aspect ratio metadata.
When I re-interpreted the file in AE into a square pixel aspect ratio, exported it, it was then successfully inputed into AME.
I have read just now that there were changes in After Effects widescreen pixel aspect ratio interpretation in CS4. Can this change be causing problems in my AME. Not positive, but I'm now thinking after many days of testing that the bug could have its roots somewhere in this ball park.
If anyone from Adobe is reading this, I would love any ideas you might have on this issue. In general, there is really no support for the Adobe Media Encoder itself. This is not good, considering how it is so necessary for AE and Premiere users like myself.
    Thanks,
