Media for Itunes on external hd.  When drive sleeps itunes won't wake it up

I have a new mac mini. I keep all of my songs and movies on an external hd and itunes knows to look for them there. When I stream to my apple tv everything works great. If I wait a few hours without using it, the external hd will go to sleep and the apple tv will not wake it up. I have two different hd's so it is not specific to one. I have to restart the computer for Itunes and the apple tv will work properly again. Is there a setting that will solve my dilemma? I have troubleshot this extensively and I am certain the drives going to sleep are the cause of my problem.

is your idea to have the computer put the harddrive to sleep, then when it is needed it will wake it up? Because the sleep is what is causing the problem. I have verified the setting is not enabled but I suppose I could try enabling it to troubleshoot further.

I read someone said you can tap on "other" when selecting which wifi you connect to and then entering the exact wifi name of the network you wish to join and the password and then joining that network allowed the password to be saved.  Also with iOS 6 the minimum length of the password needs to be 8 characters.  Maybe you password on your router is less than 8 characters long

  • How do i make it so my mac mini can always access my media for Itunes on my time capsule?

I just recently switched over to a mac mini from a pc. I also purcahsed a time capsule and set it up to hold all my media like music, movies ect. So what settings do i go to so that my itune always acesses the media on my time capsule. If the only way to do that is never let the mac sleep i can do that. But i was wondering if there is a better way to make sure i can watch a move on my apple tv without having to "wake up my computer" and then reslect the hard drive as the media source. Thanks for anyone help!!

The ipod is not a backup device. The music sync is one way - computer to ipod.  The only exception is itunes purchases:  Without syncing:File>transfer Purchases
Copy everything from your backup copy of your  old computer to your new one.

  • I was given an older ipod as a gift and want to load the songs into my computer, but it says that I can not access the sync feature.  I registered for an Apple ID and when I tried it won't let me register.

When I was given the iPod it had a GREAT load of songs already on it. (That was part of the whole "gift" thing.)  I want to sync it and create playlists in my own library and copy the songs to my computer's library too.  I applied for an Apple ID, and find that this is so old that eventhough it was NEVER registered it is listed under a weird username and won't let me register as the new owner to access the music and sync.  What do I do?  It is an older version (I'm assuming) with 80G and only 25 have been used.  I can't access the music already loaded and don't want to lose the mp3 files I have in my existing library now too.
    Any help is greatly appreciated.

    Not sure if this helps:-
The music files, were they bought from your iTunes account or did someone gift them to you after buying from the iTunes account? If they are yours you can download them again if you clear or de-authorise the ipod, it has to be done by whoever gave you the ipod to do this (the registered  owner). If they were bought for you on another itunes account I don't think Apple let you use them as they are copyrighted and they don't belong to you, they belong to the person who bought them. If the music files where ripped from music cd's then click and drag them to a new folder on your desktop and have the person who gave you the ipod to de-authorise and unregister it. Then you re register it and put your files back from your desktop folder in your iTunes folder and synch. Hopefully that would work.  Any files which you did not buy, I would not know how get around this, best bet is to take it to you nearest Apple  Store and explain that they were gifted to you and ask how you can use them.  The best way to gift music files is to buy the gift tokens and give these. Hope above helps.

  • Latest update for iTunes won't update - says path cannot be found!

I am trying to update iTunes.  I have iTunes version 11.1.0.126 and my computer runs on Windows XP v. 5.1.  The iTunes.msi installer is downloading to a folder on my computer but then both automatic and manual update fail and I am getting a message saying the "network resource is unavailable" and directing me to choose another path.  When I check the path I see that it is entirely correct!  When I click on OK i get another message saying iTunes.msi cannot be found!  What gives?

Did you ever get an answer?  I also have Windows XP and cannot update it gives me the same error you got.  The updates were working just fine, then one day when I ran the updates I got the eror so I quit the update.  So every subsequent update iTunes said was available will not work. Prior to the first error, I had done nothing new to my computer.  PLEASE let me know if you got this issue solved and if so, what did you have to do.

  • External Monitor in Target Display Mode Won't Wake Up

I'm using 2 imac 27' and one is simply used as an external display.  When I wake up the computer from sleep, it works on the main monitor, however the external display still has a black screen.  I have to unplug the external monitor to get it to wake up.  Is there anyway to fix this?  I tried unplugging thunderbolt and replugging it in which worked the first time, but same issue again not waking up.

Same issue here, I'm using a macbook pro retina and connecting to a 27 inch imac via thunderbolt and target display mode.
I also have a 27 inch thunderbolt display hooked up via tbolt cable as well.
Whenever the displays goto sleep, the iMac does not wake up with the other screens. My setup knows the iMac is part of the displays, it doesn't act like there are only 2 screens available.
If I press the target display mode shortcut (command + f2) then the imac screen turns on, but now its left target display mode (so it clearly is in target display mode, but does not receive the command to turn on display or ignores it). Hitting hte shortcut again now switches back.
I have not tried just the mbpr + imac as target display mode, but based on your post it still wouldn't wake up if it was the only machine connected.
I've found that when I come back to my computer, i just hit command +f2 on the imac, which wakes it up and jumps to its screen, t hen i hit command +f2 again, and now I wake the mbpr from sleep so it doesn't have to go from 2 screens to 3 screens.

  • W540 Sleep, Hibernate, Won't wake up, new Bios driver doesn't work (3/13/2015)

I am posting to this forum looking for a solution to this ridiculous problem of computer not waking up (monitor-wise) when it goes to sleep.  To recreate the issue I merely walk away from computer for 10 minutes or so, come back, monitor is dark.  If I hit any key the other 2 attached montors awake but the monitor on the W540 does not.  I am sick and tired of having to reboot to get it to wake.
What I've done over past two months to fix this:
Tried many of the suggestions here including going back to previous "Intel" drivers
    Tried the newest Bios update
This is a nagging and (in my opion) absolutley unacceptable problem to have.  It's like stepping back 15 years to the infancy stages of laptops.  I don't get it doesn't Lenovo have a QA department?  Obvisouly not.
I hate to lump in mulitple problems and won't but I also want to say the touch pad is absolutely a failure.  These two problems make the W540 more of a burden than a help.  As it is now I would never recommend a Lenovo to anyone.

I can open iTunes but if I click to download any app an error message pops up stating cannot connect to iTunes please try again later. I reset my Wifi router n deleted address and reset it on ipad, iTunes password reset then updated on ipad, restarted devices and still nothing. I just added iCloud to my ipad and it may have an incompatibility problem and all my phones and iPods don't get an error message and downloading completes no problem. Please help,

  • 2nd destination folder for iTunes media appears in my external hard drive   ?

I've been having trouble with my external hard drive that houses my iTunes media (33,000 songs).
I've solved that issue, but during the course of it, because the external was flitting in and out,
I believe the destination for media in iTunes preferences went from : /Volumes/iomega/iTunes Media to
    simply "/Volumes/iomega"
Now I have a new external hard drive folder named "Music", and all activity in it is just from yesterday.
My guess is when all this was happening, I'd get the "do you want to organize your media" question from the advanced preferences.
One time I pushed "yes" and a lot of files started buzzing.  I didn't want to wait for 33,000 songs so I stopped.
Am I right in guessing iTunes was reorganizing my stuff to the new folder "Music"?  Less than 1,000 songs are in the file, and
those are no longer in the old "iTunes Media" file. There's really no consistency to what shifted...it might be a single
song shifted over while five others on the same album stayed behind. I can't just shift the folders back because it will replace
the original artist folder with the new one, which will lose a lot of songs.  I tried manually to shift some back song by song and
it worked OK.  But it would take forever to shift them back in that fashion.
Is there a way to get everything back in a single folder?  If I do the "organize" thing thru iTunes and let it run, will it
eventually shift everything from my old "iTunes media" folder to the newer "Music" folder that appeared yesterday?
And will iTunes then recognize that as the active media folder and I'll redirect new media to that folder??

Here are the typical layouts for the iTunes folders (albeit Windows images):
Older versions of iTunes would put artist folder inside the media folder, newer versions inside <Media Folder>/Music. I'm guessing that your library was in the older layout, even if the main folder was called iTunes Media, instead of the new one. There is an option to move from the old layout to the new one. Moving from the new one back to the old one can be achieved by tweaking a hidden preference file in the media folder. There are however good reasons for preferring the newer layout when it comes to moving your library to a new drive or computer. Details in Make a split library portable.
Have I understood the issue? If you really want to force the old layout edit the file .iTunes Preferences.plist in your media folder and change the integer from 1 to 0 then turn the "Keep media folder organized" preference off, then back on again.

  • ITunes won't recognize media on external hard drive

    Hello Everyone....
So I have a 17" Macbook Pro, that was recently repaired under Future Shop's PSP that I purchased. They wiped it completely clean, so I essentially have a brand new computer again.
Luckily, I put almost all of my data and media onto my external hard drive before it went in. I have been operating with my iTunes media stored on an external drive for some time now with success.
Now that my computer is completely new, I did all the available updates, and then went to link my library to my iTunes, as it's "new again". It doesn't have my library attached anymore. I think I forgot to save the actual library files that I'm now reading about, and instead just saved the actual mp4 files. To be honest I didn't know there were library files and actual media files, seems weird...
I've changed my preferences back to the external drive folder where my media is located, and I've clicked "consolidate files" and nothing happens.
I've tried to hit the "scan for media" button that pops up when you have a wiped or new computer and nothing has happened.
I tried to physically click and drag everything from my external drive into my iTunes, and the little "processing xyz..." popped up with the blue and white striped progress bar, however when I woke up this morning nothing had happened. I'm not sure how that developed.
I can't seem to find anything on the internet to assist with this particular issue. I have all my media stored properly in the iTunes media folder but no actual "library" file. I guess I didn't realize they existed!
Any ideas? I am losing my mind. This mac is my second and has been in for repairs twice, and has given me nothing but problems. I am aware this "problem" is my own dumb fault but I feel like it should be much easier to recognize your existing media when it's right there in front of you.

Preferences does not scan for media, it only changes the storage location for new additions.  The files have to be added to the library.  It sounds like you tried this in one of your attempts but it did not work (I don't know why it didn't unless there is some detail I missed).
Where do you want your library?  On the external or internal?
If the internal, start iTunes.  Drag your media files to the "Automatically Add To iTunes folder.  iTunes 9: Understanding the "Automatically Add to iTunes" folder. - http://support.apple.com/kb/HT3832  Or use the "Add" menu item to add files to iTunes, or drag them to the iTuens library in the sidepanel.
If somewhere else, start iTunes while holding down the option/alt key, select a library location.  Add as above.

  • Problem with Shift to New External Drive for iTunes

    Hi,
I hope I can explain this clearly. I currently have all my music files on an external drive however the iTunes Library files, xml, etc are on my laptop. The external drive is running out of space so I simply got another external put the same exact music files on there but am having trouble getting iTunes to read from this new location. Is there a way to simply get the computer to read from this new file WITHOUT copying all the files over via changing the Media Folder Location and using the Library>Organize Library>Consolidate function? That seems ridiculous when I already have the files on the external drive and I'm worried that they will somehow be altered in the copying process.
I also like to have my iTunes Library files on my hard drive but is it better to have them with the music on the external drive?
I hope that makes sense and thanks in advance for the help, I simply couldn't find anything on here that quite describes that problem.
    JP

OK, not having a Mac I keep forgeting details. See this support document for how to use Option to open an alternate library.
Can I just confirm that you've already copied your existing media from External/Music/iTunes to
New?External/Music/iTunes without changing the layout of any of the subfolders inside. If so then we should be good to go. While there are quite a few steps the aim is to avoid recopying any files that are already where they need to be and make sure that your playlists, playcounts and other meta-data remains intact.
    1. Copy the *Album Artwork* folder and the files *iTunes Library, iTunes Library Extras.itdb, iTunes Library Genius.itdb & sentinel* from <User>/Music/iTunes/ to External/Music/. Ignore the XML file, it would get a new name in this location and will be recreated automatically.
    2. Start iTunes, pressing Option until prompted to choose or create a libray. Chose the library at External/Music/.
    3. Check that the media plays. Check under *Edit > Preferences > Advanced* that the location of the media folder reads as External/Music/iTunes.
    4. Close iTunes.
    5. Copy the *Album Artwork* folder and the files *iTunes Library, iTunes Library Extras.itdb, iTunes Library Genius.itdb & sentinel* from External/Music/ to New?External/Music/. Again, ignore the XML file.
    6. Use Option-Start iTunes to open the new library at New?External/Music/.
    7. Check that the media plays and that under *Edit > Preferences > Advanced* that the location of the media folder now reads as New?External/Music/iTunes/.
    8. Close iTunes, rename the folder New?External/Music/iTunes/ as *New?External/Music/iTunes Media/*.
    9. Start iTunes. Check that the media plays and that under *Edit > Preferences > Advanced* that the location of the media folder now reads as *New?External/Music/iTunes Media*.
    10. Close iTunes, rename the folder New?External/Music/ as New?External/iTunes/.
    11. Use Option-Start iTunes to open the library at New?External/iTunes/.
    12. Check that the media plays and that under *Edit > Preferences > Advanced* that the location of the media folder now reads as *New?External/iTunes/iTunes Media/*.
    13. You should now be able to use *File > Library > Organize Library... > Consolidate files* to consolidate any files left behind in *<User>/Music/iTunes/iTunes Music/* that you weren't able to consolidate to your old external drive.
    14. If you haven't already done so then you should also select the option *File > Library > Organize Library... > Re-organize files in the folder "iTunes Media"*. If the option is greyed out then you have already upgraded to "iTunes Media Organization".
    15. Rename the folder <User>/Music/iTunes/ as *<User>/Music/Old iTunes/*. Now if you ever start iTunes without connecting the external first iTunes will complain that it can't find the library instead of silently switching to the old internal one. This is likely to lead to less confusion in the long run.
    16. Backup... You should get another drive big enough to hold everything so you have a backup copy for disaster recovery. Now that everything is organisized sensibly you just need to copy the iTunes folder from one external drive to another to back it up or better yet locate a folder syncing tool so that only new & changed files need to be copied across when you back up.

  • Using Time Capsule as External Drive for iTunes Music Folder in iTunes 9

First, prior to upgrading to Snow Leopard and iTunes 9, I had my 210 GB of music on a 1TB Time Capsule which I accessed wirelessly through my Macbook Black and I set my path to the "iTunes Music (External) Folder" I created on the Time Capsule as the default path for iTunes to access the iTunes Music (External) Folder. My iTunes Library and Album Art reside on the Macbook hard drive. Unless I opened iTunes when the Macbook was disconnected from the Time Capsule (e.g., not at home), it always remembered the drive path the next time it was opened and would play music fine. If I had to reset the drive path, iTunes would remember it (again, unless I was disconnected from my Time Capsule). Now, under iTunes 9.0.1 and Snow Leopard, iTunes always defaults back to the iTunes Media Folder on the Macbook each time I open iTunes even if I set the path to the Time Capsule. The TC is also used as my airport connection to the cable modem and Home Sharing is enabled. Oddly, iTunes seems to play music just fine even though the drive path to the iTunes Music (External) Folder is not being utilized, which it would not do under the old version of iTunes. A screenshot is below. Anyone know what is going on here?

Make sure the Time Capsule is ready and mounted before launching iTunes.
You can add it (the Time Capsule) to your Login items in System prefs -> Accounts.

  • I have moved my Itunes media folder to an external drive and Itunes does not find the items in the folder

Running Win7. I moved my entire Itunes library to an external drive to free up space on my laptop. Itunes recognized the change and all was well. That worked fine and I have synced several times from the laptop with the library on the external drive. Now the laptop is in the shop (sigh, not Itunes related a dead network card). I connected the external drive to my desktop, made sure my software was up to date. opened ITunes went to edit/preferences/advanced. Went to change Itunes media folder location and navigated to the proper folder on my external drive and clicked OK. None of the music, videos, etc, that are in that folder show up in iTunes on the desktop. Restarted ITunes, no help, reboot computer, no help. Have I done something wrong or left out a step. I could copy all the media onto the desktop individually and build new playlists but that seems like something that should not be needed? One of the reasons I moved my Itunes media folder to the external drive was so I could use the laptop for iTunes while travel and the desktop for iTunes while at home. Do I have to copy the entire folder to my desktop and take up space there? That would be counterproductive to using the external drive. I searched and saw a hint to hold down shift while starting ITunes but that did not change anything. Any help would be most appreciated!
    Jim in WV

Thank you for your prompt response - I did as you said and did a drag and drop into the iTunes window - it imported and got my album art from the net. When I started Itunes with the shift key down I was prompted to choose a library but since I copied over the media folder and not the library folder I was unable to select that so I guess I will have to create a new library and add in all the music, videos, etc. unless I wait for my laptop and export the library or at least that seems to be the case? In short, all my data (iTunes media folder) is on my external drive and can be added to the blank iTunes screen but I can not choose a library folder. Is there anyway around completely making all those playlists again? I am not sure my laptop will survive the shop with data intact and really hate to start over on those.
In an unrelated question - I collect old TV shows from the 1950's. Can I make playlists within the home video folder somehow?  In other words like one for Quiz shows, one for comedies, one for police and detective shows, etc. while I am remaking all my playlists for my music if I end up having to go that route?
Once again thank you for helping me out. I am not too Itunes savvy and really appreciate you taking the time to answer.
