Media Kind Column

Where did the media kind column go?  I am building some smart playlists and am looking for what Media Kind some of my items are but I have to go into the Get Info option for each item to check them out.
The Kind colum is available but that is showing the actual file type it seems.  I am getting AAC audio file, Matched AAC audio file, MPEG audio file, etc.
I'm quite sure the Media Kind column used to be available when in list view in iTunes 10, but now in iTunes 11 when I'm viewing under the Songs tab under music it just does not seem to be there.
I do have iTunes Match but have tried with it activated and disabled with the same result.  I only mention this because I read somewhere else the iTunes Match seems to have an effect on the Media Kind functionality.

Hi Double-Trouble,
I see that you are trying to classify a few songs as audiobooks in iTunes. Since you have already tried to do this with the selection of items, have you tried to change the media kind of the files one by one? Here is an article with information pertaining to your question:

  • "Media kind" metadata not saved in file

This has been noted in other threads, but I am wondering whether it is simply an iTunes bug, or whether there really isn't an ID3 tag associated with Media Kind.
Are there any third-party tools that can modify this tag (and that iTunes will read on importing)?
    Bill

Media Kind is an internal iTunes property and not part of the ID3 specification. Apple could have chosen to use a custom field, as they do with the non-standard Part of a compilation flag, but haven't. Mostly the correct value is inferred from file type or determined when content is added to the library. For example, Digital Booklets downloaded from the store are treated as Music, PDFs added by the user are treated as Books. You might be able to make smart playlists that catch any incorrect assignments so you can repair with a few bulk Get Infos. At present Media Kind isn't accessible to third party scripting, and may never be.

  • Editing media kind

Multiple users sharing the same itunes library, is it possible for one user to change the media kind of a cd downloaded by another user (music to audiobook)...it appears that it can only be changed by the user who originally downloaded the cd?

iM is a video edit app meant to work with firewire connected miniDV camcorders (and the old D8 standard...)
ANY other format, harddrive, solid state, flashmem, miniDVD, SD card, whatever is NOT supported by the iLife package..
you miss a lot of convenience, not using a fw-connected, miniDV camcorder...
    firewire = dv in/out = iLink = IEEE1394 ... all same, just different names...

  • How do I change the default media kind on iTunes 11?

When I add movies to my iTunes, they are automatically labeled under the media kind "Home Videos". Is there a way to change the default media kind to "Movies"? It's very tedious to have to go to Options, then choose Movies under Media Kind for every new movie I add. And I have no intention of waiting until I've added many movies to change them as a batch. My videos are always Movies, so the Home Video option is useless to me. Any ideas?

You're stuck with things the way they are unless Apple decide to change it. There are no options to make it behave as you wish, and Media Kind isn't available as a property that can be modified by a script or I could offer you a one tap fix-it icon.

  • I can't delete an mp3 with it's 'media kind' changed to podcast on my Ipod touch since the Itunes 11.4 update

When I download long mp3 talk shows and place them on my Ipod touch I change their media kind to podcast to take advantage of the 2x speed and 30sec jump back. I have a smart playlist on my Ipod that shows all podcasts on the Ipod. Once I have listened to them I would normally attach my Ipod and highlight the file in the podcast smart playlist and then shift+del and the file is deleted from my Ipod.
Since the 11.4 update of Itunes there has been some alteration of this function. I can no longer shift+del the files from my Ipod. The ONLY way I can delete them is to change their 'media kind' back to mp3 and then shift+del them. This is a massive pain. Why must Itunes be messed up by every update.
A previous update rendered these mp3 media kind changed to podcast unplayable on your Ipod if you have 'skip when shuffling' checked...
I have an Ipod Touch 4th gen 32gb. I am running Itunes with windows XP.

    Have you tried:
    - Reset the iOS device. Nothing will be lost
Reset iOS device: Hold down the On/Off button and the Home button at the same time for at
least ten seconds, until the Apple logo appears.
    - Unsync/delete all music and resync
To delete all music go to Settings>General>Usage>Storage>Music>Tap edit in upper right and then tap the minus sign by All Music
    - Reset all settings
Go to Settings > General > Reset and tap Reset All Settings.
All your preferences and settings are reset. Information (such as contacts and calendars) and media (such as songs and videos) aren’t affected.
    - Restore from backup. See:
iOS: Back up and restore your iOS device with iCloud or iTunes
    - Restore to factory settings/new iOS device.

  • ITunes 11 - Changing Media Kind to Podcast not sticking?

I've got several podcasts I downloaded manually and then added to iTunes. They automatically showed up in the Music category, so I tried to change the Media Kind field to Podcast to switch them over. It lets me select Podcast, but won't stick. Changing to a different tab in the Get Info window resets my selection, and selecting podcast and immediately hitting OK fails to register the change as well.
Anyone else encounter this and found a way around it?

    This for Mac only (sorry).
'Subler' offers a nice 'clean' way of adding the requisite tags to m4a files, also for iTunes U.
    It's free at http://code.google.com/p/subler/
This works only for m4a files. I have not found a solution for mp3s.
Do not add your track to iTunes yet, instead, open it in Subler.
In Subler, make sure that the track has at least the Name, Artist and Album tags set (under 'Metadata', create them as necessary using the small '+'-menu down left).
    - For a Podcast, under 'Other Settings' check 'Options: Podcast' and save.
    - For iTunes U, under 'Other Settings' choose 'Media Kind' > 'iTunes U' and save.
Now add your file to iTunes.
    And Apple: please fix!

  • Music Videos [Media Kind] is not playable on iOS 5.0.1 update

Well, my cousin and I just recently updated our iDevices (iPod Touch 4th Gen for me and iPhone 4 for him) to iOS 5.0.1 and we got this very annoying bug. The Media Kind: Music Video is not playing in our devices. We tried bringing this to nearest MAC Store and they advised us that it is a known issue to the new iOS 5.0 update. Well I already reported this to Apple but they havent replied to me yet as to confirm if this is a known issue with iOS 5 or bug iTunes media conversion. Hope to hear any feedbacks from them regarding this

If this was an iOS bug there'd be howls of pain all over the internet, which is not the case. Likely your iOS 5.0.1 installation went awry, so try the usual steps:
    Power OFF/ON
    Reset
    Restore from Backup
    Restore, then load last backup
Restore as a new device (i.e. don't load a backup)
One of those will surely correct the problem.  If not, time to contact your carrier to see if something got tweaked with your account.

  • In iTunes I'm having problems changing the "Media Kind" with a number of playlists in the OPTIONS menu from "music" to "audiobook". After going through the steps, the next time I check the items have reverted back to "music". What step am I missing?

In iTunes I'm having problems changing the "Media Kind" in the OPTIONS menu from "Music" to "Audiobook". After going through the steps, the next time I check, the items have reverted back to "Music". What must I do to save it as an "Audiobook"?

After more digging in the Support section here and some Google work, I turned off iTunes Match and lo and behold!  I can change the media kind to Audiobook!  So, it looks like iTunes Match locked the files up somehow and for some reason.
I went into iTunes Store > iTunes Match > "No, Thanks" to disable it on the local PC.

  • Bulk edit media kind not working

    Hello,
Last night I bulk edited my library from media kind "music" to "voice memo." This worked fine. Everything is now set to voice memo. However, I am now trying to edit selected albums back to music, and this does NOT work. But it DOES work if I select each song individually and change it.
    This is incredibly frustrating.
Anyone know why this is? Or better yet, does anyone have a fix or a script that will allow me to select a batch of files and change the media kind from voice memo to music?

I discovered from a tweet by @dougscripts, that it is simply not possible to do en masse or with a script: "@dougscripts To all asking: AppleScript cannot change the "Media Kind" property of a podcast track to a music track."
(I had changed mine for the same reason regarding iTunes Match, and also unsuccessfully tried the same 2-step process.)
But, I did figure out a workaround that will save your sanity.
    1. Add all the tracks you want to change into a single playlist.
    2. Then use a mouse recorder (I used this one http://www.jitbit.com/mac-mouse-recorder/ ... the demo lasts long enough for you to change what you need to).
    3. Record the action of changing 1 track from voice memo to music manually.
    4. Set the mouse recorder to repeat the amount of times as there are songs in your playlist.
(You won't be able to use your computer while it's working, so if you have a huge library it's best to do it while you're sleeping. Also, don't speed up the playback of the action too much, as it will fail.)

  • Can't edit Media Kind in iTunes 9?

After updating to iTunes 9 I have found that I can't edit the "media kind" label on any of my tracks. This is particularly annoying as I use audiobooks a lot, and now I have to store them as music. In fact, it seems that I can't edit anything under Options at all, such as "skip when shuffling" etc. Any ideas? I have never had a problem with this before and any help would be much appreciated.
    Thanks!

Just a couple of general points that may help in future.
Unless a file has the Podcast flag set, audio files imported into iTunes will be treated as Music (apart from m4b audiobooks) and video files as Movies. You need to manually change the Media Kind after import.
As well as "Media Kind" there is another property inside iTunes called "Video Kind" which indicates if a file is a Movie, TV Show or Music Video. Current builds of iTunes *do not* alter this value in tandem with a change in Media Kind. This could potentially cause problems with smart playlists and perhaps even remote access to the library. The Video Kind property can be set from script.
Given that Media Kind is an internal property of the iTunes database there is no good reason that it can't be applied to any file whether locked or not, but I suspect iTunes first checks for write permissions before making changes so permissions may be an issue whenever you are unable to change the Media Kind.
Unless your selected audiobook files are all in .m4b format iTunes will report any selection of two or more audiobook files as being Music. Ignore it. It can't handle mixed property values either, e.g. a mix of compilation and non-compilation tracks will always show as *Part of a compilation: No.*
When working with single audiobook files you cannot change the status of the *Remember playback position* and *Skip when shuffling* flags. Simply select more than one file to adjust.

  • Can't set media kind to movie

I imported a video in to iTunes, and it came in as a movie. It's an educational video, so I thought it would be nice to set its media type to iTunes U. I did that, then clicked iTunes U in my left hand pane, and the video did not appear. I created a smart playlist where media kind = iTunes U, and there it was. So I figured I'd change it to Podcast. I changed it, and it didn't show up under Podcasts, (but again does appear under smart playlist). So I figured I'd change the media kind back to Movie, but now that media kind is no longer available from the dropdown list! My only choices are Music, Podcast, iTunes U, Audiobook, Voice Memo.
How can I change the media kind to movie so it appears in my movies?

Was the "Movie" option missing after you had changed it from "iTunes U" to "Podcast"?  I found it missing after originally changing the media kind to "iTunes U", but after changing it again to "Podcast", the "Movie" option became available again.

  • Media kind doesn't work

Hey guys I just upgraded to iTunes 11 for windows.  I am having trouble changing some music files to podcasts.  This was fixed in iTunes 10 some time ago.  Any thoughts?

It doesn't work in iTunes for Mac either.

  • I enabled the "kind" column and saw different file formats - Why?

I just happened to enable the "kind" column in Itunes and see my songs have several different file extensions such as AAC Audio file, MPEG Audio file, Protected AAC Audio File, Purchased AAC Audio File, and WAV audio file.
Is this O.K.? What does the file type mean to me?

    Yes, it's OK.
Protected AAC Audio means itunes purchase with DRM,
Purchased AAC Audio means itunes Plus without DRM,
    MPEG audio means MP3,
    WAV means just that, WAV
