Media library index memory limit?

i have about 6.5 gigs of music loaded onto my card.
ALL my music is precisely IDv3 tagged, even w/album covers.
i've went through, song by song and made sure the artist, album, song title, and track # shows correctly.
i use mass storage (and USB-drag and drop) mode w/ a 8 gig media microSD card.
when I load all the music i have onto the card, a large amount of music does not show. i know what music shows, and what doesn't. the cut-off point seems to be somewhere in the "S" category.
i've moved ALL my music from the card. I then loaded ONLY the music that doesn't show up when all the music is loaded. ALL of "S" shows up, just fine.
i then move ALL my music back to the card. the "S" cut-off (as i call it) happens again, and i can't see the music that i JUST SAW anymore.
is this a known issue? it is an obvious limit to me, but just to prevent any simple answers, i've wiped and formatted the card, and put it all back on. same thing. also the same thing with a battery pull.

NVM, limit of OS 4.3

  • How can I transfer my iTunes Media Library from one PC to another without losing files and making a mess of the file and album structure?

I have imported a number of Café del Mar CD's to iTunes, and iTunes keeps scattering the tunes into several different folders in iTunes Media. It also has trouble finding album information, unless it has been downloaded from iTunes Store. Previous versions of iTunes I have tried didn't have this problem.
I've tried to tidy the files manually in iTunes Media, but that usually results in duplicates, so I stopped messing with it. I actually wouldn't mind iTunes blowing up my albums into a nightmare file structure of hyper categorization in iTunes Media (Album, Album Artist, Artist, etc.) if only it recognised its own mess when I transfer the library from one iTunes library into another.
An example: I downloaded Cafe del Mar - Essential Elements featuring 13 tunes, two of these can be found in the files Cafe del Mar/Cafe del Mar Essential Elements, iTunes also created the folder Cafe del Mar/Cafe del_Mar Essential Elements containing 0 tunes!?! and the rest of the tunes are found under Rue de Soleil in the root folder, indicating ONE of the artists as the criteria for creating a folder of tunes!?!
I am trying with every fiber NOT to hate this program, and would appreciate it if someone could explain to me how I can move an iTunes Media library of aprox 54 gb from my desktop via an external harddisk onto my laptop. I have tried 4 times, and everytime the result varies. Sometime I transfer 3000 files, other times 4000. Which files follow and don't is random. I lose files tranferring to the external harddisk and lose even more files from the external disk to the new library on my Lap. Do I have to transfer song for song or can this genius program actually transfer a larger amount of files without losing half the files and duplicating the rest?
Is there a limit of size or amount of files?

Backup with this User Tip, restore the library to the new computer using the same tool, keep the backup up-to-date in future. Deauthorize the old computer if you no longer need to access protected content on it.
As to your issues with compilations albums select all the tracks, set the Album Artist to Various Artists and on the options tab set Part of a compilation to Yes. See Grouping tracks into albums for details.

  • Since years, my wife and I are sharing one Apple computer. On this, we both have an individual user account. Each of us has an own iTunes Account and an own individual media library. Why is this setup now blocked by Apple? Cannot download purchased music.

Since years, my wife and I are sharing one Apple computer. On this, we both have an individual user account. Each of us has an own iTunes Account and an own individual media library. Each of us is using an own individual iPhone, which we frequently update with our iTunes Accounts. We have had this setup for years. It was convenient, reliable and user friendly, since we both could download what we wanted, create playlists, etc. without impact on the other. Exactly this convenience has made me and my wife real Apple fans, so that we also wanted to convince our daughter to move from Android and PC to our easier Apple setup.
Since a few weeks, this setup does not work anymore. From Apple Support (online chat on Apple.at) I was not told that this is not supported any more. Every computer is only allowed to be connected to one iTunes account. From one perspective (sharing music across other users as an act or media piracy, etc.) I can somehow understand this. However, since we are using different user accounts on this computer, I do not have access to other user´s iTunes media and could not play, download or copy it. So what is the point in this?
This now means, that my wife and I are only allowed to download individually purchased music with our personal iTunes accounts only with an interval of 90 days, so every on of us 2 times a year!
Was I incorrectly informed by the Apple support? If so, how can I solve the problem? Or is this really a new policy by Apple? If so, what is the reason? Am I expected to purchase a Mac for my wife, my daughter, myslef and for the three smaller kids to follow soon?

    Welcome to the Apple Community.
Unfortunately, if Apple simply allowed people to log into different accounts and download content, everyone would be using everyone could share everyone else's content and bypass the need to purchase anything. To protect against this, they limit you to logging into a new account to once every 90 days.
If two or more of you, have different accounts and use only one computer, you should each have your own user account on the computer, to avoid the need to log in and out of iTunes.

  • My Mobile restart while update the media library.

    Try a reset first.
Press and hold the Sleep/Wake button and the Home button together for at least ten seconds, until the Apple logo appears.
If that doesn't help, follow the instructions for recovery mode >  iOS: Unable to update or restore

  • Size media library?

how big should be the media library, or in other words....is there a limit when it comes to the size of one library?

Aperture has been designed for really huge Photo Libraries; there is no size limit. You may have referenced libraries distributed over several drives. Only don't let your library fill the drive completely. Aperture will need plenty of space on the same drive, when merging libraries or upgrading libraries to a new Aperture version.
And if your Aperture library is on the system drive, leave free space for the operating system as well, otherwise the performance will go down.
Also, there is a practical limit. If your Aperture library is really large needs rebuilding or upgrading, this may take hours, some forum members even reported, it took more than a day.
So, don't be afraid to let your Aperture library grow, but if you have separate sets of image, that really will never be used together, like business photoos and private photos, you might consider to have two separate Aperture lbraries.

  • Itunes froze, restarted itself but without my library index!

Itunes froze, restarted itself but without my library index! The media is still in Music folders, but want to reinstate my library.. how?

    Empty/corrupt library after upgrade/crash
Hopefully it's not been too long since you last upgraded iTunes, in fact if you get an empty/incomplete library immediately after upgrading then with the following steps you shouldn't lose a thing or need to do any further housekeeping. In the Previous iTunes Libraries folder should be a number of dated iTunes Library files. Take the most recent of these and copy it into the iTunes folder. Rename iTunes Library.itl as iTunes Library (Corrupt).itl and then rename the restored file as iTunes Library.itl. Start iTunes. Should all be good, bar any recent additions to or deletions from your library.
See iTunes Folder Watch for a tool to catch up with any changes since the backup file was created.
When you get it all working make a backup! For example grab SyncToy 2.1, a free tool from MS. This can be used to copy your entire iTunes library (& other important data folders) onto another hard drive or network share. You can then use SyncToy periodically to synchronise or echo your library to the backup. A preview will show which files need to be updated giving you a chance to spot unexpected changes and during the run only the new or updated files will be copied saving lots of time. And if your media is all organised below the main iTunes folder then you should also be able to open the backup library on any system running the same version of iTunes regardless of drive letter or path.

  • Updating Media Library in producing wrongly oriented thumbnails

    Hi !
Bought yesterday a new Mac mini and transferred today Aperture and it's Library from the Timemachine-Backup to the new Machine.
When starting Aperture it now started to update the Media-Library.
It seems to recreate all the thumbnails and that process is really slow:
    - I can see 4 kernels mostly unoccupied.
    - The transfer from and to disk is  arround 1-3 MB/s to the internal disk.
all not particulary breath-taking values in my opinion.
    BUT ...
    - for 1300 pictures it took more than an hour (and there is 24000 more that need to be updated)
    - and many of the thumbnails are wrong. They orient wrongly for pictures taken in portrait format.
To correct the thumbnails I need to open the picture in Aperture .
    - it almost kills any other activity on the Mac mini. Even iTunes Music is getting hick-ups (I never experienced that on my 2006 Mac Mini with SL)
    Questions:
    - How can I put this process of updating the library into background (let's say run it on two cores over two or three days) but being able to use the Mac for something else in the mean-time.
    - How can I force correctly oriented thumbnails ?
    Thanks for your advice.

    Update again:
In the mean-time I have some news:
    A) A really good feature in Aperture is, that when you restart Aperture it resumes all jobs that were running when you close Aperture. That means, that I do not need to put the job into background.
I can just close Aperture, when I need the computer for some other stuff and then I can start Aperture before I go to sleep to run the update.
    B) I started Aperture in 32-bit Mode (Control-I on the Aperture Application Icon) - check the "start in 32-bit mode - check-box" since then Aperture uses only a quarter of the memory it was using in 64-bit mode. Now I am happily enjoying a film from iTunes. Browsing the Apple-support pages and run Aperture media-libary-update in the background. Which now runs 3000 pictures per hour.
This brings up the following question: Why is there a 64bit Mode if it is slower and uses more resources ?

  • Hitting iMovie 'application memory' limit on MacBook Air when sharing to file)

    Hi Folks,
I'm running iMovie 10.0.1 on a 2011 MacBook Air (2x2 GB DIMM capacity), with Mavericks. I now have 3 edited HD projects there, varying in length from 26 min to 37 min.
I'm able to 'share' any two of these to MP4  files (on an external drive), but I only get two thirds though sharing the third project when I hit an 'application memory' limit, at which point everything freezes.(The same thing happens when sharing to 'Theatre').
I notice that all three projects and their associated 'Events'  'load' when I select 'Projects' in the library (presumably from the external drive to the iMovie application on the MacBook Air drive).
Is there some way to restrict this loading of everything in the library to a single selected project and associated event? Maybe I should move the whole app to the external drive?
Apple tells me that I can't double the DIMMS to the 2013 8 GB level.
    Cheers,
    Alan
(PS How would you like to be playing tennis in the Aussie Open - it's 44 degrees here today!).

    G'day again Geoff,
I did as you suggested above, viz, isolated the remaining event and project from those that have successfully shared (rendered) earlier, by segregating the latter to a separate library in an external drive, leaving only the target event and project on the MBA's flash drive's iMovie library. (My 2011 Air has 4 GB of non-upgradeable RAM).
I confirmed that there were no other apps running, tidied up with  'CleanMyMac', 'MemoryClean' and 'DiskDoctor', and again tried sharing the remaining HD project to file (and later, to Theatre), but as before, iMovie quit halfway through, with a 'run out of application memory' message.
I then tried sharing to file at progressively lower resolutions, but unexpectedly, this didn't help.
Even though an earlier project of similar size (about 30 min) from the same event shared to file successfully, at full HD, I'm making no headway with this one. It 'plays' normally when opened in iMovie, but........?
What haven't I thought of here?
    Cheers,
    Alan
PS We wound the temperature back for Andy Murray, just to help him along into the quarter finals. He's on his own from here against (probably) one of Rafael Nadal, Novak Jokavic and Roger Federer. All four are very popular here (but I'd like to see Andy notch up a grand slam win here in Melbourne. (A little colonial loyalty perhaps?)

  • Cisco Media Player Indexing

When I opened the Cisco Media Player to my music library, I received a message the program was indexing and to try again later.  When I finally was able to open my library, a number of tracks from different artists and albums fell under an "Other" genre and were displaced from their normal positiions.  The features and help for the Media Player are pretty lame, and I need to know how I can get Cisco Media Player to re-index my library back to its original condition.  Refreshing the zones and locations does not do the trick.
    Solved!
    Go to Solution.

Well, after a lot of teeth gnashing and hair pulling, I finally caved in and called Linksys support.  Most of the tech's suggestions were things we talked about earlier, such as the cache flush.  I described to him that I uninstalled the program and re-installed at least three times with no success.  After uninstalling I even went into the registry and elminated any reference or key which contained the words "Cisco Media" and CiscoMedia".  After each install the Cisco Media Player did not show my music library, but it could play the radio stations.   The program would also give me the same message it had earlier about indexing the files.
It was at that point the tech mentioned something which stunned me.  He asked about the LELA version and build.  When I told him I had the latest build, he said I was running the 32 bit version.  My operating system is Vista Ultimate 64.  When I loaded the program from the CD, it had an older version of LELA so the program automatically downloaded the latest '32' bit version.  The tech gave me the URL for the 64-bit version - http://update.linksys.com/lela/install/lela-64.exe.  I uninstalled everything including LELA and went in and scratched the registry as before.  Plus I made sure the Cisco Media Player folder was deleted from the Program files (x86) folder.  After I installed the 64-bit LELA and Cisco Media Library, everything came up right.  The music files were there and indexed correctly and LELA wasn't quirky about the connections as before.
What really aggravated me is the fact that the install disc did not ever query me on the operating system I was using.  It automatically loaded the 32-bit version and then downloaded the updated version.  Not only that but I never did see any reference in their support page about a 64-bit version .  This was Major aggravation with a capital "S".  Well at least I don't feel like I wasted $300 on a POS.  Things are working fine now and I guess that's what's important.

  • Home sharing - cannot connect to media library - iOS 4.3.1 not working

This question might be answered... Posting anyway in case it helps anyone else (did not find answer when I searched). Feel free to ignore or contribute as you wish.
iPhone 3GS currently streaming a movie from MacBook Pro iTunes library so home sharing is working. It connected fine the first try.
iPad has not been able to connect. When it tries, it shows the library in the list. I select the library and the spinner starts. After about a minute (60 seconds) the error says Cannot connect to media library.
I have tried logging both devices off the wifi and logging back on while they are sitting right next to each other.
My wifi is set up with the wireless modem (n) with an Ethernet cable to another router used simply to extend the signal to the other side of the house (same network name -- this will probably cause some questions but I can't be sure it's the problem) ... So far AirPlay has worked fine, Apple tv works fine.
The library is not too large, only 1,000 songs and a couple dozen movies.
Not sure what other variables would be relevant.
    iTunes 10.2.1
    OSX 10.6.7
    MacBook Pro
    iPad (not iPad 2) iOS 4.3.1 (8G4)
    iPhone 3GS iOS 4.3 (8F190)
Hmm... I wonder if that is the problem. The version on the iPad (not working) is newer than the iPhone (working).
I thought I just updated both to the newest but I guess 4.3.1 is only a few days old.
Might have just answered my own question.

There is definitely something wrong with 4.3.1.
    My setup:
    iMac OS X 10.6.6
    iTunes 10.2.1(1)
iPhone 4 4.3.1 (8G4), Remote app on this phone was working fine with ATV's until I upgraded it to 4.3.1 today. Now it can not find the home share library or the ATV's.
iPad 2 32GB Verizon 4.3.1 (8G4), Just upgraded to 4.3.1, not seeing home share library at all.
ATV2 OS 4.3 (8F202), Software 4.2.1, Was working until the last update, now don't see home share library at all.
ATV2 OS 4.2.1 (8C154), Software 4.1.1, This one I did NOT get the update, works fine with no issues at all.
I have tried to turn Home Share On/Off, turn ATV's/iPhone/iPad On/Off and reset Home Sharing. Nothing works. I think it is pretty telling that the ATV without update works fine were all devices with 4.3.1 stopped working.
    Apply please fix!!

  • What is the best way to set up iTunes to deal with a massive media library?

I have a really big media library...probably 7k-10k digital photos, close to 1,000 ripped CDs, and over 600 ripped DVDs, all stored on 1.5TB external hard disks in a 4-drive enclosure.
Due to a recent technical glitch, I find myself installing a new drive and moving the current library. My question is, what is the best way to set up iTunes' settings to deal with a media library that is both external to the Mac on which it runs, and spans multiple physical hard disk units?
I generally like the idea of iTunes organizing my library for me (i.e. keeping everything in Media Type>Artist>Album folders via the "Automatically Add to iTunes" folder), but I'm not sure how that's going to work spanning multiple drives.
I just figure since I'm basically starting over with my iTunes installation, maybe there's a better way to do it.
Thanks in advance for any advice you can offer.

You can set them up as a software RAID using Disk Utility.
It'll simply be one large disk for all intents and purposes.

  • IOS devices not loading shared media library to the end

I am having this problem for some time by now - but it did not appear shortly after any iOS update! Now what is the trouble?
I am using my iPad 3 and my iPhone 5 (newest iOS on both) alongside an Apple TV 3, a Mac mini Server and a MacBook Pro (newest OS X). The Server hosts my media library, private sharing activated by using my Apple ID. Sometimes (not always) I am sharing my library with the same Apple ID on My MacBook Pro to my home network, too. Both Macs can see and use the other Mac's shared library without any troubles - so this works. The Apple TV 3 also can connect to both libraries (though I am using the Server's much more often than the MacBook Pro's).
Neither on my iPad nor on my iPhone I can get the home shared media library loaded in complete by using the apps
    "Music" and "Video".
The small loading circle symbol just stops after about 50 % and then nothing happens furthermore no matter how long I am waiting:
The only thing I can do afterwards is to force quit "Music" and / or "Videos" app, restart those and trying again, still leaving me the already described 50 % and nothing else.
    What is strange about that:
"Remote" app to Apple TV and my Macs and "AirPlay" to the Apple TV just work fine. "Remote" app connects to my Apple TV and my Macs without any troubles. But "Videos" and "Music" can not load the shared library to complete. It does not matter to which Mac I am connecting (to be more exact: to which shared library). All iOS devices "see" the shared libraries, seem to connect to them at the beginning but just to refuse to load more than 50 % - and doing anything else afterwards. To make it even more strange both iOS devices were able to load everything to the end some time ago. I am not sure if there was an iOS update available in between anymore, but there definetly was an iTunes update in between!
So what I already tried (not in that order described here):
Stopping and restarting home sharing on my Macs using the initial Apple ID account.
Stopping and restarting home sharing on both Macs using another Apple ID account (and adapting the iOS devices info accordingly).
Using different Apple ID accounts on both Macs at the same time for home sharing.
Logged off and re-logged back into iTunes Store Account on my Macs and iOS devices.
Re-configured my sharing on my iOS devices using those two already mentioned accounts.
Re-initialization of the complete iTunes libray on my Mac mini Server (moving the .xml to the desktop, deleting the .itl from the iTunes folder, re-importing the .xml).
I think I have done some other steps in between, too but none of them fixes that problem. Please note: I am not using an Apple AirPort Extreme but my service provider's Modem / Router combination. I do not think the problem is located in that Modem / Router / Network connection as it once worked without any troubles. Maybe I will try to connect my AirPort Extreme to that Modem somewhat later to see if this fixes the problem.
    Any help is highly appreciated!
    J

Looks like I found a solution on my own...
After renaming my iTunes Mediatheque in the iTunes preferences window on my iTunes server hosted by a Mac mini all mi iOS devices were able to load my mediatheque in complete again. It took some time to get all the covers but no title is left over.
I found this solution by "accident" when I noticed too many devices used more or less the same name on my network.
    Strange.

  • I moved my itunes media library to an external drive to free up 40gigs.  How do I recoup my 40gigs?

I moved my iTunes media library to an external drive to free up 40gigs on my hard drive.  When I checked in about this Mac to see if the space was gained it now seems to be replaced by a category "backups".  How do I recoup my 40gigs?

When you moved the iTunes data to the external HDD, I assume you deleted it from your MBP.  Backup are not to worry about.  Read this:
    http://support.apple.com/kb/PH14329
They will be deleted when disk space is required.
    Ciao.
In addition, read this Apple support article:

  • Is there a maximum size of the media library in relation to the disc size?

I am tryng to place my 80 GB Media library on an external USB 128 GB driive.  I get a message that I can't load the entire file without authorization.  What the heck is that about?

What title is on the error message, and what is the exact text of the message? Is it a Windows Explorer/file system problem rather than an iTunes one?
If you have any files over 4Gb they cannot be copied to a FAT32 drive. Occasionally that triggers apparently unrelated error messages.

  • Home sharing "cannot connect to media library"

I've had a few successful home sharing moments and it really is brilliant, trouble is its a bit flakey when it comes to connection reliability.
I am using iTunes 10.2.2 iOS 4.3.2 (both devices) I've set the password and user account up on both my iPad and iPhone and  TV and all of them work fine, no problems.
 TV seems to be the most reliable one after I made sure it remains plugged in and doesn't have its power removed.
Then, the next time I go back after a couple of days or hours they show "cannot connect to media library" what do I need to do to stop this from happening, to make it just work as it should?

    Hi
I'm afraid I'm having exactly the same problem.  I've not experienced an issue like this for a long time.  I've read other posts and tried each suggestion but no joy.  This really shouldn't be that difficult.
    Any thoughts out there????

I purposely do not download many of my redeemed movies so I can stream them.  In iTunes 11, there would be a little cloud icon to indicate a movie was in the cloud.  That icon is gone and, at first, I could not find a large part of my movie library.
