Media management questions iMovie vs FCP events

I have more than a Terabyte of video in a series of imovie events that are in chronological order and and keyworded.  I like to create new projects that include video from this vast library of events that I can search through to find.  I recently moved to final cut pro x and decided to import all my old imovie events. I am using a 27 inch imac with 3.4 GHz intel i7 24 G ram and fusion drive.  After importing the imovie events, FCPX now takes close to 10 minutes to load each time I start it up (imovie opens in about a minute reading the same video in imovie events).
Is it a bad idea to have so many final cut pro events to load?  Is it necessary in FCPX to keep only the media I'm using in the event for each project?
I feel like i have to use imovie to manage and keyword my entire ibrary of video clips in imovie events and then import only the videos I need for each specific project into FCP.  Was there a problem importing the imovie events instead of importing all the video directly into FCP events?
In FCPX is it best to keep events to a minimum and have each project correspond to a similarly named event with just the video Im using?  I wish final cut pro and imovie would share the same library the way aperture and iphoto do for events.
Thanks!

I have about 4TB of iMovie Events which I imported to FCPX. My startup is going pretty quickly, maybe 30 seconds.
One thing I learned is that FCP does not duplicate the iMovie events. It creates a new FCP Event Folder, and in the folder is a hard link to the iMovie clip - so space is not doubled. (This would not be true if you imported the imovie events to a different drive, so you want to keep them on the same drive.)
Having said that, there is a tool for quickly taking Events off-line. I haven't found the need for it yet, so I just keep everything online.

  • Help! - Power surge during capture.......media management question

    Hi all.....a power surge occured just at the end of capturing a 40 minute tape, and the computer shut off (I will be hooking up my battery backup immediately!).......I believe the media still exists on the capture scratch disk, but no clip appears in the browser. If the media exists, is there a way in FCP to create a clip to link it to......or do I just have to delete it and re-capture??
    thanks for any advice & info!!

    You could always check the actual file (if there is one) in the folder you designated in FCP as the "Capture/Scratch folder. If it plays fine in QT Player, it may be alright ... but my advice would be to recapture.

  • FCP and media management

    Hi all, dreaded but simple media management question here concerning rendered effects.
    Lynda.com has no tutorial on this matter...
    How do I manage them?
    Assume scratch disk, rendered audio/video, autosaves, etc, are all on the same drive, everything going to the 'FCP Documents Folder'
    Lets say I've got L&T AVCHD clips to prores lite, no problem, placed in the capture scratch folder under a folder of the project name I names (and that FCP has placed a folder). Lets say I'm using a bunch of Boris effects. I render them, view them, change them again, render again, etc, I've finished my sequence knowing that I have orphans of rendered effects ('orphans' is an avid term for rendered effects that are 'older versions', which means you can always revert back to an 'orphan' if you didn't like the new version of a rendered effect).
    OK in the finder, I see the rendered effects folder under the name of my project, with all the rendered effects (and orphans, I believe). While I could do that manually in the finder I know it's not the smart way of doing it. I always want to think large scale.
    Is there a function WITHIN FCP NOT THE FINDER that allows me to... I don't know... 'clean up' old rendered effects that are not media relatives to the sequence(s) I've selected of that particular project in the canvas?
    cheers

    Holy Grail of information!!  I'm just trying to get my kiddo's room to not look like they vaporized out of their clothes every day!
    But yes... there is the render manager under... um... tools maybe?
    Try that.

  • Media Manager Problems in FCP--Need Help Quick!

    I'm trying to package my short film to send to a color corrector. He wants it packed by "Media Manager," but whenever I try it, it keeps saying "Error, the specified file is locked." Help?

    He probably just wants the sequence media managed, creating a new fcp project with just this sequence included.  Media manager usually requires all sources to have reel names assigned to them.  If you brought any material in digitally (graphic files, quicktimes, etc), you will need to add reel names for these files in the browser.  Once that's done, make sure the sequence is selected in the browser and go to file:  Media Manager.  Choose Copy Delete unused media from duplicated items and Duplicate selected items and place into a new project.  Questions?  You could post back or perhaps read the appropriate sections of the manual - or talk to your colorist.

  • Final Cut 10.1 Media Management Very Frustrated

    Hello Final Cut Pros,
    My situation is as follows. I was using Final Cut 10.0.9. That version had a perfect feature that on a simple click allowed me to see all my events organized by Year and even by both year and month if I wanted to. Both Views were simple clicks. I chose to use the By Year and by month view. This is exactly how I want to view my videos in 10.1.  I am not a video professional. These videos are simply my family home videos organized so that we can view them on demand by just going directly to the year and month we want to view. THere are nearly a thousand events spread across 15 years. Upon Upgrading to 10.1 this view has disappeared for me. IN fact it's much worse than that. Each one of my events have now been moved to a 10.1 event. Only there is literally no way of organizing events in 10.1 that I can see. My hundreds of events in 10.1 are simply all lumped together under the one library file that 10.1 created for me. When you search for a way to organize the view of your events you get a little hope when you find that you can orgnize "events" by created date. Only you CAN'T organize events by Created date. You can only organize clips by created date. So when i click to view by created date, my events on the left remain exactly as they were but the clips shown in the browser on the right get organized by Created Date. Nowhere do you see a relationship between the Events on the left which are devoid of any and all organization and the clips on the right neatly organized by Created Date. Now, the thing is in my case I have never  bothered to rename any clip after import. THe clip names themselves have only the clip date as part of the name and that's it. Staring at those clip names for me is useless. After much research, and  couple of fruitless phone calls to Apple Support, I am left completely in the dark. I have spent 3 days agonizing over what to do with this and have decided on somethign that I can;t possibly believe is the answer. I am convinced that I am overlooking somethign brutally obvious but still nobody on the net or anyone in Apple support can point it out to me. Here is what I am doign right now which just has to be wrong. Apple cannot be forcing all of us who are in similar situations to do this, but here goes
    1) I created an Event called ALL EVENTS
    2) I then am going to each of my hundreds of events and doing the following
    3) I am assigning the event name as a Keyword to the clips belonging to that evnt. (No automated way to do this. Nearly a thousand events)
    4) Next, I drag the clips in that event to the ALL EVENTS event.
    5) I select the keyword collection which is named the same as my event and which now appears in the ALL EVENTS folder and on the broser window I can see the  clips. THe clips are organized by date.
    6) THen I create a folder in tthe ALL EVENTS folder with the year of the clips and another folder inside the year folder for teh month of the clips. I then drag the Keyword collection to inside the month.
    Doign the above is the only way that I can conceive of with 10.1 to see all of my home videos organized by year and by month. Dividing any of this into multiple events and/or mutiple libraries is useless to me from what I can see. I want to be able to enter the word CHristmas and have all videos relating to Christmas for every year pop up. I don;t belive that can happen with 10.1 if clips are stored across events, and certainly not across libraries but I could be wrong.
    I am just about convinced that I am about to be totally emabarrased by someone's 1 or 2 sentence reply to this post explaining what I need to be doing that will not consume days if not weeks of my time like the steps I described above in order to have a By Year and by Month view of my videos.
    Thank you all for any help you can provide
    Javier

    WOW, my frustration is mounting to no end. Tom, I have searched over and over again. There is nothing out there that addresses my very, very clearly stated predicament in this post. While I most definitely appreciate your response to my post, please notice that you also are not directly addressing and answering my question. Leaving me to continue to suspect that the answer is simply that no there is no way to get a view by Year and By Month without putting in weeks of work". I am looking for a white paper from Apple that addresses the followign question exactly,
    "Hi Mr. Final Cut user, if you have an event library that is based ont he current system whihc allows you to clearly view all of your events by Year and by MOnth here is what you need to do to achieve the same thign in 10.1/ . Here are some of the suggestions on how you might be able to TRANSITION". Of course everyone's case is different Mr Final Cut User but of the 4 or 5 clearly stated options we've given you here it's up to you which one you chooise. And BTW none of the options we;ve given you require you to put in weeks of work to get to what you had already."
    Again, I don;t feel that an answer to my question can be "well to each their own. Everybody's workflow is different so you ahve to get to know 10.1 through online materials. That's baloney. The Group by Year and Month was an option right on the GUI. Its akin to them removing the Import feature and telling us all that everybody imports different.
    I AM NOT the only person who had all their clips in EVENTS.  THe EVENT in the new media management is nothing like the EVENT in the old. Actually the fact that named it EVENT may be adding to the confusion.
    Tom, if you know Final Cut then you know exactly what's just happened to me. Nearly 1000 events have been dumped into separate 10.1 events yet there is no Event-based organization at all. THere is nothing out there at all addressing this question. Again, in Final Cut 10.0.9 I was clicking once and getting all my events organized instantenaously by Year and by Month. If you would be so kind as to please just answer this question for me before I put in weeks of work. With the new 10.1 am I forced to do tons of work in order to get to see my videos again by Year and by Month? THis answer would be very helpful to me because right now I am in disbelief that I have to do that. It makes the work I am doing very depressing. For all I know, there actually is a way to do it very easily or maybe Apple knows about this issue and is about to issue a fix for it.
    MY quetion is simple. Can someone please help me.
    Thank You Very Much for any help you can provide

  • FCP, STP, Media Manager happy together?

    Background:
    With FCP 5.1.2 I am having some issues with media managing a 25 minute SD sequence from a large project. My goal is to move the sequence and clips to an external drive from the main editing system.
    The problem is that when I media manage(MM) the sequence (copying the clips, creating a new project, including non-active multiclip angles), the collection of media and clips copied by the MM does not include every clip used in the sequence. It gets most of them, but misses about 20 out of 450 clips used.
    Other odd facts of note:
    The resulting MM'ed project contains both sequences and clips that do not appear to be used in the original sequence. So, while some clips are missing, FCP is making it up by throwing in a few random ones. Thanks?
    When reconnecting the media, I get a modal dialog (from QT I am guessing) saying: "Effect975120BA-9850-4E#2043.aif cannot be found. Without this file, the movie cannot play properly. Cancel? Search?" This looks like a reference movie problem, but to my knowledge we have never used QT reference movies.
    There are also references to .stap files, which I cannot find anywhere. Each .stap file seems to be missing a "render.mov" file.
    Question 1:
    We've used STP on some of the audio files in the sequence. I am guessing we either used it incorrectly, or that round-tripping in STP conflicts somehow with using the media manager? Are there any known issues here?
    Question 2:
    In trying to track down why some of the clips do not get their media copied, I exported the MMed project file to XML v3 and looked at the missing clip. Here is the weird file section from the clip:
    <file id="QTMRead">
    <pathurl>file://localhost/Applications/Final%20Cut%20Pro.app/Contents/MacOS/</pathurl>
    <rate>
    <timebase>24</timebase>
    <ntsc>TRUE</ntsc>
    </rate>
    <duration>3808</duration>
    <media>
    <audio>
    <samplecharacteristics>
    <samplerate>48000</samplerate>
    <depth>32</depth>
    </samplecharacteristics>
    <channelcount>1</channelcount>
    </audio>
    </media>
    </file>
    Uh, what is my clip looking for a plug in?
    Any and all help appreciated, thanks in advance.

    1. I am sure she has more than one batch of files named "untitledxx" in her numerous capture scratch folders. If I do media manager will it keep them separated and properly linked to it's intended clip, or will Media manager throw them all together, thus confusing FCP?
    I noticed an option on media manager that asks if you want to base media file names by their exsisting file names, or clip names.
    She does a decent job correctly labeling her clips in the bin, just not the captured source files, by basing the media on clip will it solve my issue mentioned above? <
    Unknown, sorry, this is why you want to run a test, probably more than one. The source media files will not have exactly the same names--oh, you have separate capture folders. Okay, this WILL be a problem.
    <div class="jive-quote">2. Deleting unused media...I should uncheck this right? otherwise i may loose clips I need or want to use? Is this why the green bar labeled modified is smaller than the original bar? What does including affiliate clips outside selection mean? < </div>
    This is one of the things that tells me MM was designed by or purchased from someone who has not prior knowledge of FCP. This actually means the copy will forget and refuse to copy over any unused media. But it scare the bejeezus out of everyone. "DELETE?" Ohmygawd, NO!
    3. And my best bet for right now is to copy the media, rather than move, decompress, or use existing? that way if anything messes up, i can still use her drives. < </div>
    Affirmative. Still, make some tests so you are confident with the MM results. You're on the right track, luck.

  • FCP 6, Media Manager, DualEyes Problem

    I've locked picture on a 90 minute feature and I'm trying to export the sequence to an external drive so our colorist can do the grading.
    The camera original footage came from various Canon DSLRs. Some of the footage was transcoded (Pro Res 422 HQ) off site and delivered to me. But most of the footage, I transcoded myself, using log and transfer.
    I highlight the sequence I want to export in the FCP browser, then right click, but when I click “Media Manager”, nothing happens. The little icon spins for a split second, then nothing.
    The same thing happens if I try to open Media Manager from the top menu. Nothing. Won’t open.
    Everything in the timeline plays just fine. Exporting the timeline as a self-contained or reference file works without any problem.
    It seems Media Manager doesn't like certain clips in the timeline.
    I went through the timeline one clip at a time and started to compare the clips MM had a problem with versus those it didn't have a problem with.
    It seems the offending clips are all clips that were created in DualEyes, off site, to sync second system audio.
    Clips that I synched here, on site, using PluralEyes, do not offend Media Manager.
    I don't know that this matters, but...
    The offending DualEyes-created files that were created off site include a single, merged file - a video track and three audio tracks (a pair of tracks from the second system audio, and a single track from the camera mic that was used for reference).
    One last thing I tried to confirm it was the created-off-site DualEyes files that were keeping MM from working...
    I imported two files, residing in the same folder on the HD.
    File A had been synched using DualEyes. It has a video track and three audio tracks (one from camera mic, two from second system audio).
    File B had not been synched (an MOS take). It has a video track and two audio tracks (camera mic).
    I laid both clips in the timeline, next to each other.
    If I right click on File A and then click Media Manager, I get an "Error 34" message.
    If I right click on File B and then click Media Manager, Media Manager opens normally.
    Any idea what's going on here? Any advice would be greatly appreciated.
    I'm running...

    2.4GHz 8-Core MacPro
    6 GB RAM

    I have no idea why this problem is occuring, but you might try deleting the audio from your sequence before doing the media manage.  You could then copy a mixed down track to the media managed sequence if you want audio reference.
    Also, select one of the problematic clips and hit command-9 (clip settings) and tell us the settings for the clip.

    The events and projects folders have to be on the top level of the drive for FCP to recognize them.

  • FCP 7.0.3 Media Manager crashing during copy

    I want to copy the used media from a project (used media is on an internal hard drive) to an external RAID drive using Media Manager in its "copy" mode.  I do this when I have finished a project to "archive" the keeper video so I can clear up space on my scratch drive for the next import.
    Media Manager starts OK but then crashes about 20 to 30 minutes into the copy process.  Both the source and destination disk look OK in Disk Utility.  Neither are full.
    Tried with two different projects - both crash.  Projects appear to be OK and successfully exported when last accessed.
    Done this many times successfully in recent months.  Only change I can think of is recent upgrade to OS.
    Any thoughts on how to work out what is causing the problem.

    It is the darndest thing.  You know when you take your car to the mechanic and report a problem but then the problem mysteriously disappears, well, after I put up the post above, I ran Media Manager for the 5th time to get the error details when it crashes  - AND IT DID NOT CRASH!  I have just run the Media Manager copy successfully on 3 projects.  Crashed 5 times, ran successfully 3 times.  And I did not change anything.  Weird?
    Sorry to bother.

  • How do I include Motion files in FCP "media manager" exports?

    All files with a .mtn do not transfer correctly when I use media manager to duplicate a project: I get the red-dotted frame and even when I try to reconnect the frame, once rendered, remains black. I was wondering if there is a way to export Motion files there were created by exporting from FCP and "embedded" in Motion.
    Thank you for the help!

    ~/Titles.localized/Show Effects/Show/Lower 3rd/Lower 3rd.moti“ is the Motion file that is being used.  I was able to replace the file and when I open a project all of the lower thirds are there except they are all missing the names and titles.  I
    I parsed through the .fcpevent file and found the following which seems to set the title in the effect.  Its pointing to an object with an id of 2.  But how do you get the title in the new Motion file to be the same object so that it will fill in correctly??

  • Question:   What about Media Manager?

    Is there any equivalent to Media Manager in FCPX?   What we had wasn't perfect, but was incredibly useful.

    So in other words, No.  There's no way to trim unused media while copyng, no way to recompress the media copied to a different codec during the xfer, no way to add handles to media copies - none of the good functionality available in FCP 7.   Media management is completely essential to any editing app, and FCPX doesn't have any.

  • Question about making a project backup with Media Manager

    I have several projects that I am working on right now. I'd like to make a backup of these projects and burn them to DVDs. The question I have is when I select "copy" with Media Manager it shows me how much space the backup will be. Without selecting the render files each of my projects would fit a a single DVD. If I don't include render files can they easily be recreated by just re-rendering the backup project?
    Thanks!

    Backing up a project file takes very little space. Backing up the media associated with that project can take up a tremendous amount of space. By using Media Manager, I assume that you want to back up (copy) the media ... correct?
    Do you only have 4.3gb of media used in the project you want to back up? That's all the data a DVD disc will hold.

  • FCP 7 sequence not transfering to external hard drive with media manager

    Ok so heres the problem. I started making a bunch of webisodes and after I got through editing and finishing the first two on my computer, I realized while I was working on the third one I would need to transfer my workflow to an external hard drive.
    My goal was to transfer all the projects individualy with media manager to a 1.5tb external hard drive I just purchased and then delete all the projects and associated files off my computer. Then set the new scratch bin to the hard drive and continue working on the third episode from the hard drive.
    However, thank god when I used media manager I said "copy" the files. I opened the project I had copied in the hard drive to see if it was all there and there was no sequence with all my editing! I'm not sure why it didn't import the sequence. All the clips are still I the project tab.
    Can anybody help?      Am I doing this right?
    Thanks!

    The information for the Sequence is contained in the .fcp project file that should be in the same folder as your Media Managed clips. Double click it to open the new version.

  • FCP 5 Media Manager Nubie

    Just ventured into Media Manager for the first time....all of my video was captured as one clip (about 20 min's) at an offline resolution.....now that I made the sequence "offline", Discreet clips (the shots used) have not been created. I've tried subclips and it still wants to dig the whole tape.....does it remember the edit decisions? Is this because I captured as one clip initially?
    Ironically I did recapture the entire tape again, then got an error message stating that there were TC breaks throughout....therefore nothing was captured. There were not any TC breaks the first time.
    Is this my foray into Media Mgmt ****?
    I kind of need to redig this stuff....seems really easy....yet I can't do it?
    Any help out there?
    Confused.

    There's a bug in Media Manager in version FCP 5 which prevents you from media managing sequences where the media is already offline (deleted) ... this worked okay in FCP 4.5 and has apparently also been fixed in FCP 5.1
    try creating an EDL of your sequence, then open a new project and import that EDL. then highlight the sequence and batch capture ... should capture only the sequence media you need
    good luck
