Media Mania and Thoughts upon completing a 6 year project...

I am wrapping up the first of 2 documentary films that I have been working on for some time now. Just finishing the renders of the 2 hour show with the Nattress film look filters, shot on DVCam. I think it looks nice. Lo-o--ong render times though in 10 bit!
Editing the shows on FCP was a breeze--a complete pleasure besides a couple of little bumps with the Aja IO and etc.
The real problem was in the finishing. FCP (HD at least)is not ready for the big time.
I come from an Avid background. I am used to doing a Decompose and bing, bang boom--hi rez recapture, no problemo. The Media Manager in FCP is horrible. It is not "Pro" or anywhere near it. I cannot count the hours that it took me to recapture and reconstruct clips that had messed up time code, speed or both after shrinking the project (and previously copting it to a new drive) with Media Manager. Absolute frustration.
I spent an extra $5500 getting a setup (deck, scopes and Aja IO) so I could finish on my system instead of going elsewhere...Absolute frustration.
I have another 2 hour show to finish as soon as I am done with this one...
Does anyone have any suggestions on how to save my sanity with this brain numbing process? Is 5.0 better with this stuff? Am I doomed to spend an extra week on my online cleaning up FCP mistakes?

Does anybody know how? It should work for everybody, not the VERY few people who it actually does work for.
WHY NOT motion control clips? I don't get it...
Yeah, I tried the a work around described by someone--put regular "no speed change" versions of the clips at the end of the timeline and recapture--the motion control slips were still messed up. Why should I have to go back and redo work I did previously--i.e. slow the clips down again and cut them back into the show EVEN if it did work?
Then, you go in and manually readjust the screwed up motion and change it to back to Constant from Variable and remove the freeze frame or backwards playback of the video that FCP added, save the change and then go back to the clip later on and FCP has f'ed it up again and put some other new speed thing on it.
Anyway, I am as big a proponent of FCP as anyone but this is NOT a ready for prime time work flow. It just isn't. You have to be able to rely on your gear to get stuff done. I am glad I was not on a deadline or I would have been downright screwed.
It's bad enough to have all of the tape changes involved with capturing one timeline at a time (seperate projects are necessary or Out of Memory comes into play-) without all of the other problems.
P.S., I am not just venting, I what some real solutions from anyone who really knows how.

I'm trying to to grab images or PDF's in a folder, add those containing "front" into the 1st column of a CSV, those containing "back" to the 2nd column and then zip/archive it upon completion. So far I'm using the following script, which add's all PDF/png files to the CSV in a single column.
How do I create column headers and add files containing "front" to the first column and "back" to the second?

I'm not sure how you are running the script e.g. Automator or in an Applescript. Because there are several steps involved I have just done it all in a shell script…
To use it copy & paste into a plain text file (TextWrangler is a decent free code editor with syntax highlighting - it makes life easier).
Save the file as paginator.sh
Make it 'executable' (only need to do this once). In Terminal…
chmod +x paginator.sh
Now you can run it by using…
paginator.sh
Obviously use the full path to the file in those commands (drag & drop the file to get Terminal to autofill it).

In short it finds the front & back files (sorts then & saves that in two text files).
Then it merges them via 'pr' and removes the suffixes in one pass of the output file. I have removed the last piece of the sed (I'm unsure what it was for).
It saves into ${HOME}/list.csv Which is the users home folder
There are is room for improvement on this but it creates the csv as desired…
The sort will place front_10.jpg before front_1.jpg (You must use leading zeros on all your files - e.g. file_01.jpg, back_01.png…)
This does not account for nested folders! It will find files at every level! (you can add '-maxdepth 1' to stop find going into nested folders).
The output depends on the file names & if one file is missing the order goes out of sync (you should probably search for the correct 'back_' image & a pair them up correctly with extra logic).
The paths are 'hardcoded' (you can make it accept input so that you can pass the 'files folder' and the 'output file' name into it).
If this is all too complex you could try to re-purpose into an Automator or Applescript, but I think if you are calling repeated 'do shell script' actions it is a sign you could be using the shell itself. It can be wrapped up if you need to make it run like an application - or just give it a '.command' suffix & it should just launch Terminal & run when you double click the file.

Understood, the difference with iTunes being that Apple doesn't (currently) require you to enter any account info on the device until you try to purchase something from their store. Initial setup is just a connection to the iTunes software and you're good to go.
While I understand that RIM wishes the account to be defined, they also need to be aware that doing so during the initial setup without proving an option to do it later, while failing to provide any means to change it afterwards (short of a device wipe) doesn't always suit the the situation. Hopefully they'll be reviewing the forums to gather feedback that they can incorporate into future software updates.

ITunes 12.0.1 now just "hangs" and does not complete the sync with my iPhone (iOS 6.1.6).

I've seen similar posts earlier in Apple discussions, but I haven't come across a definitive answer yet…So, let me ask again:
Up until 6-7 hours ago, iTunes 12.0.1 was working perfectly well including syncing with my iPhone (I use an oldie but a goodie and it suits my purposes, iOS 6.1.6, 3GS). Specifically iTunes now "hangs" and will not complete the syncing process with my iPhone. It get to "2 of 6" in the backing up process, and then the spinning beach ball appears. I keep my iTunes library on a separate external HD (USB).
Even if I only want to launch iTunes 12 to use it (and NOT sync), the application freezes.
In similar posted questions, "Linc Davis" has asked that the user run a diagnostic using the Terminal utility. I have done this, and I paste the results below.
Any help with this is appreciated!

Thanks, once again, for repeating yourself by sending me the message above (a message you have sent to MANY users with this problem)!
However, you give me this great opportunity to say two things: 1) YAHOO! I fixed the problem, and 2) I want to share how I did so because I hope it helps others.
With the help of reading info at this website http://osxdaily.com/2011/09/22/fix-the-itunes-library-itl-cannot-be-read-version -error-when-downgrading-itunes/, I followed this procedure:
1) I deleted the iTunes 12.0.1 app from my computer
2) In addition, in reading related details at the website above (i.e., by clicking on links on the page AND scrolling to the very bottom to view links to related articles), in my iTunes library folder, I changed MY CURRENT "iTunes Library.itl" to "iTunes Library.old", as the website advises. The current .itl file was the one being used by the iTunes app I had just deleted from my computer.
3) I went to the "Previous iTunes Libraries" folder and dragged a copy of the second-most recent .itl file to my desktop (for me, this file was "iTunes Library 2014-07-23.itl").
4) I re-named it to "iTunes Library.itl"
5) I then dragged a copy of the file in step #4 to my iTunes folder (the folder in which you now also have the "iTunes Library.old" file).
6) I closed all remaining apps on my computer that were opened and I restarted it.
7) Now, you don't have any iTunes app on your computer, so I downloaded a .dmg of iTunes 12.0.1.26 and installed the app (for example, you can download from here: http://www.macupdate.com/app/mac/5661/apple-itunes.
8) Once installed, I opened iTunes and immediately I got the dialogue box, "updating iTunes library" -- THIS TOOK FOREVER AS I HAVE CLOSE TO 1,000 SONGS + OTHER ITEMS IN MY LIBRARY!
9) I patiently waited until the library update completed, but it DID COMPLETE.
10) Viola! iTunes 12 is not "hanging" (or freezing) any longer. I can navigate around the application.
CAVEATS:
1) Before I first deleted "the corrupted" iTunes 12, I was able to open the Preferences panel, go to "Devices", and check the box that stops the app from syncing with my iPhone. This setting seemed to carry over; thus, I have not tried to sync yet…WISH ME LUCK!
2) After going through steps 1-10 above, I didn't immediately have Internet Radio available in the application (i.e., I didn't see it), but it is now showing up and it works! I just had to wait for a few minutes...
3) I also use iTunes Match, but I haven't turned it on yet in the newly installed app. On the iTunes Match page, it says, "Add this computer" or "No thanks". So, the app is behaving as if I'm just beginning to use iTunes Match for the first time. Later, I will click on "Add this computer", and I hope it goes smoothly!
4) This isn't a caveat, but I think I should say: my iTunes library is on an external USB HD (I have to say THANK GOD for that). Obviously, this has implications for doing steps 2 to 5 above. The newly installed iTunes 12 app had no trouble in finding where my library is (I had it set up this way back when I was using iTunes 10).
5) One last piece of advice: Make sure that when you plug your iPhone into any other computer only to re-charge but the iTunes app on that computer wants to sync with your phone, you DON'T let it sync. First, you should go to Preferences in the iTunes app and click on "Devices". Then check the box that says, "Prevent iPods, iPhones,…….from syncing automatically." After that, you would be able to plug in your iPhone to another computer to re-charge it.
FINALLY: I THANK EVERYONE WHO WAS WILLING TO SUGGEST SOLUTIONS TO ME REGARDING THIS PROBLEM! I see that MANY users are having this difficulty, so I thought it would be fair for me to share how I resolved the issue -- my iTunes is running fine now...

I've looked at DETAIL_DATASTORE and USER_DATASTORE, but the examples in Oracle Docs for DETAIL_DATASTORE leave me a little bit perplexed. It seems like this should be pretty straightforward.
Ideally, I'm trying to avoid creating new columns, and keeping the trigger adjustments to a minimum. But I'm open to any and all suggestions. Thanks for for your time and thoughts.

I would create a procedure that creates a virtual document with tags, which is what the multi_column_datatstore does behind the scenes. Then I would use that procedure in a user_datastore, so the result is the same for multiple tables as what a multi_column_datastore does for one table. I would also use either auto_section_group or some other type of section group, so that you can search using WITHIN as with the multi_column_datastore. Please see the demonstration below.

I am writing an interactive book and want to use media files and stuff.

I am writing an interactive book and want to use media files and stuff. My question is: If I want to sell this book in the iBookstore,
may I use photos I find on google images and media i find on youtube? Or must all be my own stuff?

No ! well not just any photo image or "media". The person who created the photo images has a copyright protection IF he/she wishes to impose it - ditto video and other media.
However if its out of copyright by virtue of age and certain other factors - its considered in "The Public Domain" which is why you see paintings by the Impressionists all over chocolate boxes and posters to name but two!
There are websites offering images donated by the creators and all for free.
Taking and using a picture you do not own copyright and placing online where it can be downloaded is first "publishing" and you need permission and placing in a situation where it can be copied and re-distributed is a breach of copyright.
Look at the tail end credits on any DVD... the above is always included.
Others rmay correct me but Copyright in some countries is vaild from creation until 50 years after the death of the creator. However, that is not always the case. Example, assume I am bequeathed a photo archive and on the last day year 50, I publish a completely new version of the archive, wizzed through Photoshop, cleaned, cropped and modified in other ways.. then I can assert my claim for copyright of the renewed archive, but its a bit more complicated!!!
You can search for "Free Photo Images ( media) , or royalty free images and if you land on a particular website you can ask permission. If you send me a request, my reply will be NO... and you get a warning of dire consequences if your infringe my copyright! Other may be more lenient and in fact feel pretty good to be asked.
A way to get some guidance is to check out Wikipedia and the many images included in its subject matter, check out the copyright status.
Beware of using photo images of paintings in Galleries and Museums, they may have copyright conditions.. but one can always contact them to seek permission.
Search for Copyright and ownership and it should bring up some good information. Depending on your country.. it may have its own Copyright website. USA are more detailed than most, The UK has the 1988 Copyright Act.
Also remember that all photo images carry exif embedded data which among other things carries the copyright information and shows up in a google search for the right keyword! Scanned images processed through Photoshop and other editors can have the metatdata added also.

I'm using an iMac (21.5-inch, Late 2013) running Yosemite. I spent hours on the phone with HP who did their best and thought they had solved the problem Now it has stopped printing completely. Just says 'idle' or' connecting to printer' but never does.

I understand that you are unable to print from your Mac running Yosemite on your HP Officejet Pro 8100. I got 2 new IPhones 5s and the wife couldn’t decide what she wanted so she stayed with old phone but this locked me into a new 2 yr contract . Within a wk one of the new iPhones started turning on and of like 10 –15 times a day. Wk 2 it turned off and would not turn on again . It was my sons who was in college at the time so we talked and he took it in to a Verizon store where he was told I need to come in since the account was in my name. He was away from home , Verizon could see on account it was his phone they said it was not abused, they could not even turn it on , they sold me the phone give him another phone maybe even a loaner till he gets another. So now I need to go to store and explain to 3 different people this is my phone and my son has it and I need a new one. what a waste of time after about 2 hrs and talking to different people and yes they said there were notes on his account from other person he had talked to from different store. So I finally walk out with a receipt in hand and being told I would have a new phone in a couple days. As I sat in my vehicle thinking this is stupid I looked at my receipt and noticed it said droid on it so back into Verizon I went. The salesman said that’s what your son has on his account. My son had activated a friends old phone so he has one since VERIZON REFUSED to give him one. Another hr 3 people and yes they can see he had a new iPhone and notes on it from other store. Sometimes sorry just doesn't do it. I was now late for a appointment . Now I walk out and have been told I will get a new iPhone in the mail in about 2 wk Yes 2 wks again I bought it there just give me a new one and you send old one back. I will also get a new droid that I have to send back because they said they cant cancel it . In about 3 days I get the Droid and sent it back Verizon mistake and a waste of my time . After waiting over 2 wks and not receiving a new iPhone back to Verizon I went . I am now bitter at Verizon after doing 20 yrs of business with them. 3 people 1 hr later I was told it got delivered to my post office . I got the tracking num called the post office and they say o yes that was the droid. Go back in to Verizon another hr of explaining I walk out being told I will get a new iPhone in a couple of days, We’ll see . Once again I got the phone in your store just give me a new one . Do you realize how much of my time you have wasted ? do you care? O what is Your Policy ? How many Billion did you make last year ? I am Locked into a new 2 yr contract . Why don’t you just release me ? After 20 yrs do you think I will ever renew my contract ?

Feature Request: Standard Keyboard Navigation in Media Browser and Project Panel

System Navigational Keyboard Shortcuts in Media Browser and Project Panel
Windows (and I'm sure Mac) has a standard set of keyboard and mouse navigational shortcuts for keyboard and mouse. I'm so used to using them in daily browsing (both in Windows Explorer and in any web browser) that missing them in the PPr Media Browser, or getting a different result in the Project Panel, is still very jarring and slows my workflow (even after having used Premiere Pro [again] since version CS4).
I propose that the Media Browser and Project Panel should honor the OS defaults for keyboard and mouse folder/file navigation. A few of the standard (Windows) keyboard and mouse navigational shortcuts are listed below (listed in order of most helpful to my own work):
Moust Back Button = "BACK"
ALT + LEFT ARROW = "BACK"
UP, DOWN, LEFT, RIGHT = steps through the various folders within the view.
UP, DOWN walks through the directory tree while RIGHT expands the currently selected folder and LEFT contracts that directory (twirl down, etc).
ENTER opens a folder.
ALT + UP = "Folder Above"
ALT + RIGHT ARROW = "FORWARD"
F2 Renames a folder
ENTER "takes" that name to the clip. (current functionality used ENTER to rename a file/folder).
ESC cancels the renaming operation.
Pressing Enter on any piece of Media or Title, etc should take an "expected" action acording to it's context. (i.e. ENTER on a video clip would load it inot the Source Monitor. ENTER on a Title would open it in the Title Editor. ENTER on a folder would take us into that folder).
These functions exist in both Windows Explorer as well as most modern Web browsers. When browsing files and Project folders, it's what I've come to expect. It's muscle memory, if not intuitive. I realize that many of these keyboard commands are already in use in other windows/panels of the application, therefore, these commands should be Panel-specific (i.e. ALT+LEFT works differently in the Media Browser and Project Panel than it does on the Timeline/Sequence). And as always, when making such changes (i.e. changing the behavior of ENTER to F2), this set of keys should be highly configurable based on preference:
Preference:
checkbox: Use OS-specific navigational keyboard and mouse commands in Media Browser and Project Panel
checkbox: Use the (very few) "classic" Adobe keyboard commands in the Media Browser and Project Panel
The most common habit I find myself doing in the Media Browser is clicking the BACK button on my mouse—only to realize, yet again, it doesn't work that way in PPr.
The most common habit I find myself doing in the Project Panel is pressing F2 to rename a folder/bin. Of course that doesn't work. And when I've renamed it, I press ENTER to save the name, but that only moves me to the next folder ready to rename it, too. I also find, out of habit, I try to navigate the bins using the arrow keys and then open the bin/folder using ENTER. Instead, my bin is asking for a new name and I hit ESC to avoid renaming it—now THERE's a shortcut that works the way it should.
I realize this feature may be controversial to some, since it's not the way we're used to doing things in PPr. However, I'm sure there are just as many out there, like me, who are confounded as to why PPr has never worked with the "conventional" navigation shortcuts found throughout the rest of the operating system, be it Windows or Mac.

There is a world of information in these forums if you use the search function near the top right of this page. Just type in NAS for example and you get many threads on the subject (marked with a green checkmark if it solved the question) another example would be Airport Exterme and sound system. Once you formulate your ideas better then specific questions can be addressed one at a time. You may find that a less expensive choice for a server might be a mac mini. Good luck with your project, ask more specific questions and update you systems profile.

Exporting to Media Encoder and file locating issue

Ok, Now I've read a LOT of threads trying to find a solution to this but none of them have answered my problem exactly, so here's what I have:
Running a New computer with a clean install of Windows 7 64 bit and Adobe CS4 Master Suite
Hardware:
Dell Precision M6400
Intel(R) Core(TM)2 Duo CPU T9900 @ 3.06 Ghz, 3.07 Ghz
12.0 GB Ram
Premiere ran fine for a while, but soon I've run into a problem where I try to export to the Media Encoder and I keep getting the error:
"Could not read from the source. Please check if it has moved or been deleted" over and over
I have deleted recently imported media one at a time to try and locate what's causing it since it wasn't doing this before, but no luck. So I restarted the program but now the Premiere project won't open. The task bar loads until about 2/3 in and stops there indefinitely, I've left and came back to it 2 hours later and it hadn't moved. I back tracked and found a previous save that will open, but it still will not export, it still says "Could not read from the source. Please check if it has moved or been deleted". And as soon as I update anything and save a new file that one will not open either.
I've tried recompressing each video file into a format I know works well with Premiere but still no difference.
This problem has plagued my workflow for a while now and I can't take it anymore. I've had to restart clean project files to try to work around it but I lose so much progress, and the work around by rendering the premiere file through After effects hasn't worked either. The error I get there says "Dynamic link server is busy".
Here's what the problem is not: It is not because I uninstalled CS3 or any other previous version, I've never had it on this computer. It's not a plugin problem, I don't have any plugins on this install except for the default ones that Came with Adobe Master Suite for Premiere Pro.
Someone please help me, this is ridiculous that I have had to trouble shoot the program this much. Both CS4 and Windows 7 have been around for over a year now and neither are in Beta Editions

Wow, sorry, forgive me if I've seen most forums work with a lot less, and your dismissiveness led me to assume you hadn't read my post.
All of this is new and up do date as far as Adobe and Windows updates go, that's Version 4.2.1.
My projects for this are all in NTSC Widescreen DV 24P, the particular sequence that I render from is in that format as well, although regardless of which one I use the problem keeps occurring.
My renders for my recent purposes have been compressed in .h264, IPOD video Large. The codec I'm rendering in also doesn't seem to matter, because I've tried this in .avi., .mov, .h264, .wav, etc. and all with various settings that I thought might help, but the encoder quits encoding 4 seconds in and gives me the error that it can't find the media.
And I didn't mention the media type and what not because it seems irrelevent of what I use this problem keeps happening. I'm pretty sure it's a problem with the project file or perhaps the media encoder or both.
And I don't know what you mean by "disks"
Do I have a Raid set up on my hard disk? No, I have two 0.5 TB hard drives, Programs on one (C:\) Projects on the other (D:\).
What address am I saving the scratch disks to? I use the default of "same as Project". Have I tried Clearing it? Yes.
I don't think I'm getting at what you're asking.
And I don't think I've ever used an .xlsm (which is excel?) file and I've definitely never used a Power point project (PPS?) file in my projects. And they open in their respective programs, although I'm not sure why you asked about that. Again I'm not sure I know what you mean.
The Premiere Project (.prproj) file is what I'm trying to open when the progress bar stops at 2/3 the way through and forces me to terminate the process with the task manager to close it.
It would help to mention that all my projects are animated and I use premiere to cobble them together, so no problems that relate to transferring media from a camera to the computer would apply here. Most of the files I get out of Maya are in Default .avi or .mov files, and I also use a handful of .wav files for the dialogue and .jpgs for cards and placeholders.
I believe that this problem began when I updated a few of the files in my project, but I've been doing that for weeks without incident. I've been updating them by saving over the old media file with the updated one of the same name, length, and type.
I don't work exclusively with Premiere, in fact it's not what I usually use, that would be Final Cut Pro.

Is it possible to embed a media player and media in a ADE ePub

Playing around with ePub ebooks particularly embedding audio/video in ePubs.
I've seen a number of examples that show embedding/playing a swf file in an epub and it plays ok in ADE.
However, I'd like to be able to embed a media player e.g. StrobeMediaPlayback.swf or JW Player and a media file and have the player play back the embedded media file.
When I try this the player shows up but it will not play the file.
I've included references to the swf and media files in the ePub manifest.
Here is an example object tag. This works fine if I load the html page in a browser like FireFox.

No, it is not. Worse, many people will view this in any old PDF viewer, most of which won't have overprint preview at all.
You need to send very clear instructions about this, with specific screen shots - or better, avoid tools and constructions that require it. Probably some wording about "need to view with suitable professional tools" will make the message more palatable.

Schedule A Job To Run Upon Completion of The Currently Running Query

Hi friends,
Sometime right after sometime a query starts I realize the same to be taking quite a long time and then upon realizing that I hadn't selected the next portion of the T-SQL which depends upon the result of the ongoing query I have to wait for hours to launch
the same after completion of the first part. In such a case could there be a way to somehow assign SQL Server Agent a Job to check the status of the ongoing query at some intervals of 10-15 minutes,
or preferably some other way, to trigger the job of carrying out the pending job automatically upon completion of the ongoing query?
