Media offline in bins and sequence but shows in canvas

I am working on a project in FCX. I worked on it yesterday. The project is saved on my external HD and I have not changed any file names on it. Now today when I tried to open the project it opened but now my media is offline. It shows up in the canvas and the viewer just fine but in the sequence I get the offline warning. I tried clicking on the clips in the sequence and then "reveal in finder" and FCX finds it easily. Here is a screenshot of what I am seeing

So I am thinking that maybe its a scratch disk problem cause my scratch disk is on my mac and the FCX file is on my HD. Could that be it? It seems that as I adda file its good for a day then its gone so maybe my scratch files are getting deleted every day? Any help would be appreciated

It looks like the video's there, just the thumbnails are probably missing.

Generally the project file is kept on the system drive and the media is kept a dedicated media drive. For MacBook Pro's that's a FireWire drive.
What format are you working in? The Canvas looks letterboxed. Was your video shot that way?

  • Media offline after log and capture HELP!!!!

    hi,
i am capturing media from my camera from dv tape into FCP,
i log and capture the footage and all seems fine, i've done this hundreds of times before.
today however when i log and capture the file comes up as media offline (file logo with red line through it) in the browser window, i need to get this file done asap!! HELP!!
Message was edited by: Modern Video

i have a deck and i've tried coming from the deck, but its giving me fallout due to deck issues i have, so i'm coming from the camera. when i log and cap i get the file with the red line.
when i try to reconnect it to a file all i have in the capture scratch folder is the bad file from the deck.
so i cant reconnect the media from what i have captured already.
so essentially my problem is that from my camera, i log and capture and get a file that does not go into capture scratch and yet still comes up as an unconnected media file in the browser!!??

  • 10.9.5 with camera raw 5.07 not showing .RW2 and DNG but showing .CR2 previews in finder

Even with the latest OS and latest camera raw, only my Canon raw image files display proper previews in the finder, and open properly with iPhoto and Photoshop.  .RW2 and .DNG files will not show previews or open with iPhoto, and .RW2 files won't even open in Photoshop without being converted to DNG.  I've combed the support community questions for over a year now, am tech support oriented, and am ready to throw in the towel.  I've had this same problem with previous system versions and camera raw versions, so I know the solution lies with neither of the two.

I'm having exactly the same issue and I posted on Adobe's site and dpreview and StackExchange but nobody has the final answer. I can see thumbnail previews in finder with ALL my various Raw files (Olympus OMD EM1, Panasonic GH2 and GH3, and Nikon D5300) just fine but when I use the convert to DNG feature in Lightroom (latest version since I'm on the CC subscription), only the Nikon DNG files display a preview thumb in finder and neither the Oly or Panny DNG files display. The closest I got to an explanation is that, since the m4/3 cameras do their profiling in camera and Adobe doesn't have a profile for them, some of the info isn't converted into the DNG in those systems. The article I read about it was really about Aperture not being able to read the Adobe DNG files but it may also explain why Mac finder can't show preview thumbs.  Aperture 3: Some DNG images display as unsupported - Apple Support
If there is no way to get preview thumbs in finder with the converted RAW files from my GH3 then I'll forgo converting for now.
    Here is my Nikon DNG
And my Panny DNG (Oly is the same)
Panny RAW shows up just fine
    As does the Oly ORF

  • Random "media offline" try to reconnect audio but reconnects to camera audi

for some odd reasons FCP just told me multiple sequences are offline but I didn't do anything to cause this.
I wouldn't care but the sequences are made up of video clips with audio from a seperate device linked to it so when I go to reattach the files it thinks the audio is the wrong file and says there isn't the correct timecode etc. How can I make it so I don't have to resync all this! Thanks!

It happened spontaneously? Mid session? After re-opening FCP? Details needed.

What version of FCP? Where did the media come from? How was it ingested? Where is (was) the media stored? Why is the audio separate from the video? Where does the audio come from? How is it "linked" to the video?
    What are your sequence settings?
Have you tried to restore to an earlier version of the project where things were working correctly?
The more information you provide, the higher the chance that someone can help.

  • Want to color label item in bin and have color show in timeline.

I have an edited sequence. I labeled some items in my bins with color. The color does not show on the clips in the timeline. Shouldn't it?
Will the color only transfer to the timeline if the clip was colored first and then edited in? Will the color not transfer retroactively?
Same for changing name of clip in the bin: name change does not update in timeline. Shouldn't it?
Also, is there a way to search for items in the timeline by clip or reel name?
    Thank you.

Correct. You need to color it first for the color to be transferred to the timeline.
Also, is there a way to search for items in the timeline by clip or reel name?
Yes, click on the timeline, hit Apple-F and type in the name you are looking for. Apple-G will get you to the next item.

  • PE 7: Media offline and Crashing

My Adobe Elements 7 has been acting up a lot lately. Sometimes when I load up my videos and add it, the music will play but my video will freeze and I will have to restart it. Another problem has been the media offline screen. My files and such are in the same spot as when I uploaded them but yet they have the offline red screen. If I click on some of the footage with the red screens, they will pop up as if they are online again. The other ones I have to actually move slightly and then the original footage will pop back up. On the timeline they look like they are online with the raw footage but if I bring the red line over them the picture will come up as if they are offline. If I double click the raw footage they come up normally but on the actual edited screen they are the media offline screen. And just today after I went through and moved and clicked all the red screens for my video to actually show, I went to save to My Personal Computer, After I clicked save, my computer crashed and went to the blue screen. I was hoping this was a one time thing. After my computer re-booted, I went through my offline screens again, clicked save to my personal computer and the computer crashed again and went to the same blue screen. I have made videos before and never had this problem. It is also very irritating because the videos I make take about 2 weeks+ to make and now I can't even finish them. My operating system is Windows Vista. My computer is a Dell Studio xps system, new in August 2009. Any suggestion on how to fix this, is there an update needed? Hopefully something I can download.

Is your media on your C drive or on a second hard drive? If your media is being stored on a second hard drive --
particularly an external hard drive -- that could account for it showing up offline. It could be that, every time you start up your computer, your computer is assigning a different letter to the drive, for instance.
As for yoru crashes, that likely signals a more serious problem with your system. But it's hard to say what without knowing what type of camcorder your video is coming from, how fast your processor is, how much RAM you have and, especially, how much free, defragmented space is on your hard drive. It sounds very much like your system is choking because it lacks hardware resources or because the camcorder or media you are using is demanding more resources than you can provide (as when you use photos that are larger than 1000x750 pixels in size).

  • Media Offline? What You Can Do About It

Have you gotten a Media Offline message? Do your Assets show this screen?
Chances are that when you last did a Save of your Project, the Path to those Assets no longer exists. Has the Path changed in any way? Have you Moved, Renamed, or Deleted any of the Assets? Is there an external, or networked HDD in the mix anywhere, that might now have a different drive letter? The Path in the XML code of the PRPROJ/PREL file links to the Assets is absolute - it must match from the drive letter, to the folder structure, to the file name, and match 100%. Change one thing, and the link via that Path is broken, and must be restored.
When you first Opened your Project, did PrPro/PrE ask, "Where is file ______.avi?" Were you able to use the Find function, to re-establish the link to that, and any other missing files?
Now, most people will ask, “how do I relink my Assets easily and quickly?” The answer to this question is "it depends."
First, it depends on whether you first accepted to Offline the media, and then did a Save, which overwrote your existing PRPROJ/PREL file. If you did do a Save (a Save_As, or a Save_As_a_Copy will be OK, as you would just go back to the original, and Find the missing files - more below). The next consideration is where the files reside, and the folder structure.
If you did NOT Save the Project, overwriting the original PRPROJ/PREL file, I would do things in this order:
Locate where the files are now, and make note of the full Path.
Open that Project, and when you get the "Where is file _____?" navigate to the new location, and choose that file. PrPro/PrE are pretty smart, and will look in that folder, linking automatically to all other Assets in that folder. If you have many folders, you will have to repeat for each folder.
If you did Save, overwriting the PRPROJ/PREL file, and have accepted the media being Offline, you will then need to do one of two things:
Manually relink each of the Offline Assets in the Project Panel
Go to the last AutoSave PRPROJ/PREL file (note: check the time/date, and do not just rely on the file name, as 003 might be newer than 005), and Open that, following the steps above to let PrPro/PrE relink to the assets. You will loose any editing that you did from the time of that last AutoSave.
Note: PrPro uses the file extension PRPROJ, and PrElements uses the file extension PREL
    Good luck,
    Hunt

Along the same lines, if one has Deleted, Moved or Renamed any Assets, or changed their Absolute Paths in any way, they should first get a dialog screen asking, "Where is file _____ ?" This tells us that a change has been made. It could be that one Renamed a file, or a folder, or perhaps moved things from theri C:\ to their F:\ drive. If the Assets are on an external HDD, it could well be that that same external has been assigned a new drive letter by the OS. For externals, I recommend assigning a permanent drive letter in the OS of any computer, where the Project might be used, so that drive Y:\ is always seen as drive Y:\. Remember, the Asset's Path is Absolute from the drive letter, to the folder hierarchy, to the file's name.
When one gets that "Where is file ____ ?" dialog, if they Offline Media, or Skip/Skip All, and then do a Save, the links are broken. I recommend NOT doing a Save here, but instead a Save_As, since if you Save (overwriting your original Project), the media will all be Offline, and can only be relinked manually, one file at a time.
To re-establish the Absolute Path links to the Assets, one would let Premiere help. When one gets the "Where is file _____ ?" dialog, there is the file name at the top of that screen, and then a Finder to help navigate to the new location. When that first file is located, Premiere surveys that folder, and will relink to all Assets in it, that are used in that Project. If Assets are located in several folders, then one must repeat this process for each folder/sub-folder. Only after ALL Assets have been located and relinked would I ever do a Save.
    Hope that this helps,
    Hunt

  • Fonts OK in viewer and NTSC monitor, but jagged in canvas and NTSC monitor

I've had this problem before, and this time it's mind-boggling.
All name keys created in Livetype 2, upper field dominant.
FCP7 sequence is HD 8-bit ProRes422, field dominance set to "none".
Outputting via Aja LHi card and HDMI cable.
Some keys are perfect (with all the smae settings) and others are not!
I have tried setting field dominance to "none" for both fonts and sequence,
    but no luck.
    Thanks for your help!

    I found it!
I had to change the field dominance in the browser window to match sequence.  Lookin' good!

  • I have PR cs6 and my mac has recently upgraded itself from iPhoto where i imported all my photos and film from to "photos" now all of my current project is showing 'media offline' AAAAARGGGH!! now i can't see anything. the audio is fine but everything els

can anyone help me get all of my edited holiday video visible again? my mac upgraded itself from iPhoto where i keep my imported video and photos, to "photo" now all of my current project (and probably old ones as well! ) are showing media offline. how can i get this back seeing the clips on 'photo'?

When you open a project you need to point PPro to the new media location and relink
    >mac upgraded itself from iPhoto
THAT is not good... I am Windows, but at least a Windows update gives ME the option of unchecking an update

  • I'm trying to import a sequence into premiere pro and suddenly a few sections are 'media offline'

I'm trying to import a previous premiere pro sequence into premiere pro and suddenly a few sections are 'media offline' (it has always worked up until now).  I would be able to relink the clips but the offending ones aren't showing up in the project's clip bin. To make things worse I can't drag and drop the corresponding clips from my finder into the clips bin and then 'replace clip with' in the timeline, as the clips in the project have been renamed, and are synced up to audio (this is a 90 minute feature film).
    Can anyone help??!!

Right click on the offline clips and select Reveal in Project.  This will call up the bin they're in, where you'll be able to relink.

  • Timeline thumbnails show media offline, but media is not offline.

Short version: I opened a project today that I had been working on for a long time. Some of the thumbnails in one of my timelines show up as the red "Media off-line" image. But the media is not off-line. I can play the clips just fine. Everything else seems (more or less -- see below) normal except for a handful of these off-line thumbnails. It's not a disaster, but it makes it hard to find my way around. And I'm worried that it's a sign of something more serious wrong under the surface.
Long version: I'm using an older Macbook Pro with an ESATA expresscard. My media is all on external ESATA drives. My project file is on the Macbook's internal hard drive.
I use my Macbook as a desktop machine. The computer sits on a dedicated shelf on my desk. My cat makes a habit of sleeping on top of the machine. (You can probably guess where this is going.) Most of the time this is not a problem, but about a week ago he decided to stretch in just the wrong way and pushed the expresscard out of its slot. After screaming and throwing the cat across the room, I saved the project file, remounted the disks, re-opened the project file, and breathed a big sigh of relief when everything seemed to be fine. I quit FCP again and put the project on hold for about a week.
Today I reopened the same project file and the trouble started. At first all the timeline thumbnails showed up as media-offline, even thought all indications were that it was on-line. In addition, all my audio and video renderings were gone. I re-did them, and after a while some of the thumbnails restored themselves as well. But not all of them.
All of which has me a little flustered.
Has anyone encountered anything like this before? Is there a way to force FCP to refresh the timeline thumbnails? It's hard to find my way around now that all the clips look the same.
    Thanks.

i've experienced this before, but i can't really remember how i sorted it,
i may have deleted the thumbnails out of the scratch disc, or it may have been that i switched the timeline view to name only saved and closed down, then opened it up again and switched them back on to refresh
but i know on no refresh thumbnails button in fcp itself

  • Media file thumbnails in browser say "media offline", but files are online and available for viewing/editing. How do I get a thumbnail of the clip back?

I am moderately experienced with FCE, but cannot figure out this issue. The thumbnails in my browser say "media offline", and no longer show a thumbnail of my video clip. When I try to reconnect the media files, the reconnect dialog box only checks for "online" media. I am able to view and work with the media files in my project even though it says they are offline. This issue seems to occur after a power outage. Its more of an annoyance than anything else, but I would still like to find a solution. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

    Figured it out.

  • I'm trying to share to Media Browser a 20 minute still slide show with music and text. I have tried several times to save at 1080 HD, but just before it's finished, a message box pops up saying "File already open with write permission."  What's this mean?

I'm trying to finalize/share to Media Browser a 20 minute still slide show with music and text. I'd like to finalize it 1080 hd and have tried several times, but just before it's finished, a message box pops up saying it can't be done because "File already open with with write permission."  What does this mean?  All files are closed; this iMovie project is the only thing open.  Does it mean one of the song files from iTunes? And should I just settle for saving it as a "large" file, which is what I'm trying right now?
    Thanks,
    Jamie
