Media Offline when Exporting back to FCP from STP. Lesson 10 in APTS book.

Hello, I am going through the Apple Pro Training Series Book by Martin Sitter found a road block in Lesson 10. The topic is conforming at that seems to work decently (except for garbled text in the right side of the Conform tab). My issue is when trying to export back to FCP. I choose to Send Files to FCP sequence. A new sequence is created in the selected project as expected. The audio is fine, but instead of using the video from the correct sequence, it seems to be trying to use clips from the older sequence. Additionally, all the video clips show up as Media Offline. I can reconnect media, but the problem is that it is the wrong video sequence. Oddly, in STP the video looks perfect. Is there an error in the metadata? can this be fixed or prevented? Thank you

Barreltone,
I am exporting back into Final Cut Pro via Send to Sequence. I have been exporting from the browser of FCP (sequence), and not the timeline (clips). I'm going to try that tactic, and see if that works.

  • Media offline after sending back from color

Ok. I have searched around and not finding anything offhand, but I have not changed any default settings but I am getting media offline when I import back to FCP. I can find the location of the files and all but its giving me a hard time bringing media online.

I dragged and drop the file that came back from color.
Dragged and dropped? There is nothing to drag and drop. You SEND TO FCP from Color, then in FCP a new sequence shows up. Double click on that.
But I might be getting into semantics...you might be doing that but not explaining it well.
    Trash your FCP prefs...

Shane's Stock Answer #44: FCP acting weird or unusual. Just not like is normally should
If the program was working fine, and now isn't, or just isn't working the way it should, the first things to do are:
    1) Trash your FCP preferences. Download the Preference Manager from Digital Rebellion: http://www.digitalrebellion.com/pref_man.htm
    http://www.kenstone.net/fcphomepage/trashing_fcpprefs.html
    2) Open the Disk Utility and Repair Permissions.
    3) Shut down for 10 min. Go for a quick walk around the block and get SOME exercise today. Come back, turn on the computer and see how things are.
    4) (optional) Do the Hokey Pokey and turn your self about. Results may vary.

  • Going back to FCP from Color...use original format or ProRes422?

OK, so I've color graded all 5 reels for my feature film and am finally ready to send back to FCP and reassemble! I'm hoping Shane Ross can jump in here too since he's been SO helpful up to this point :-) So I have two different formats which I've graded seperately...720p DVCPROHD stuff (99%) of film and two scenes which were HDV 1080p24. So far when I've sent back my DVCPROHD clips I've rendered out of Color using ProRes422..but my Resolution Presets: and Width & Height settings are what I'm most concerned with. What I've done when sending back to FCP is use Apple ProRes 422 with Width 1280 and Height 720 and changing my Resolution Preset from 720 x 576 DV PAL to 1280 x 720 HD to match the Width and Height settings (not sure if I should leave this at 720 x 576 DV PAL??). However, the clips show up in FCP as 133%..so obviously upscaled. So now I'm going to export the DVCPRO stuff to Compressor to upscale to ProRes422 1920x1080 to bring back and match with the HDV 1080p24 footage before FINAL export to compressor again. Should I not be sending the Color clips back to FCP upscaled to 133% with my Color settings...since I will then again be upscaling in Compressor? Or will it really make that much of a difference? And also, should I check the Broadcast Safe circle in Color when sending back to FCP? I didn't color correct with the Broadcast Safe on so should I now to be on the safe side?
    Thanks!
    David

Ok Shane, So actually just went over my Color outputs and I did render everything as ProRes 422 at 1280x720 ...and the clips back in FCP are scaled at 100% so that's good...for some reason I remember having some that came back at 133%...maybe that was just a couple clips somewhere that were wrong...I'll figure that out...but I didn't check Broadcast Safe on the renders so I guess I can go back and re-render with broadcast safe on...so we did shoot 720p HD and I AM going back still in HD from Color.
Now I'm having another issue with the HDV 1080p24 stuff...which is actually only 20 shots of the entire film. But for some reason I'm noticing that they are interlaced when viewing on my FCP timeline, which my settings are HDTV 1080i 1920x1080...now when I export the scene out to Compressor as a ProRes 422 1920x1080 .mov it actually looks great on my computer monitor...no interlacing that I can tell, looks great. However, if I drop it onto my FCP 1080i timeline then there is interlacing again...and worse, when I make a SD DVD it is also interlaced...most noticable an actor's shirt, there is a bit of Moire effect going on...this must be because I'm downconverting to 720x486?? So I've been killing myself trying to figure this one out. Doesn't appear that deinterlacing in Compressor helps any either. Is my only option to blur it out with a gaussian blur of around 2? (the HDV clips do show as 1080p24 in FCP) Not sure if the interlacing would be gone if I were to burn a bluray since it's a higher resolution?? My settings in FCP are 1920x1080 HDTV 1080i (16:9) Pixel Aspect: Square, Apple ProRes 422 BTW.
There's also quite a bit of color blurring when watching from a burnt DVD from DVD Studio Pro...wish it looked as good as it does on my LG LED 32" screen with Matrox mini...man, do DVD's really look this bad? REALLY considering going and buying an external BluRay burner today
So if I could just get this interlacing problem resolved somehow...

When exporting to a DVD from Final Cut Pro X, what settings are there to make sure you making the highest quality DVD possible?

There have been a lot of recent reports of difficulties sharing to DVD, but haven't been hearing about unreadable disks. Posibly there was an encoding error. Or it could have been bad media (blank disk).
Does it play in your Mac?
What brand of disks are you using?

I recently had to get a new phone due to damage. But when I backed it up from the last back up which was a week ago, it didn't put any apps or songs that I purchased on my phone during the last week. How do I get those back?

You should transfer any purchases from iphone regularly:  File>Transfer Purchases  , if they fail to be transferred when you sync.

  • What is the best compressor setting to use ... when exporting a 720p timeline from FCP for a project that will only be played back in a standard def monitor?

What is the best compressor setting to use for DVD StudioPro ... when exporting a 720p 30 timeline from FCP for a project that will only be viewed in a standard def monitor?

Update: The iBook can play any 480p video and higher if I encode them with DivX and in AVI format. But of course this is not compatible with my iPhone 4. At least I can shrink my library now and get away from the full MPEG-2s. I don't get why I can't use Apple's h264 though. There has to be a setting I am missing. The sample Apple h264 videos from the days of Tiger worked flawlessly on my iBook when it was new so the CPU must be capable of decoding it. I really can't understand this.
Also, since I made my videos in English for my family, I had to create soft subtitles for my wife's Chinese family, and I can't get players like QT with perian or MPlayerX to sync them properly to an AVI encoded with DivX, they only sync well with the iPhone 4 m4v/mp4 formatted files I made. This is a real pickle.
So now I may need three or four copies of each video, LOL. I need to hardcode the subtitles if I want to use AVI to playback on older machines, and keep the mp4 file for the iDevices too, while keeping higher quality h264 videos for my American relatives...
If h264 is compatible with my iBook, what is the proper encoding settings? Must I dramatically lower the settings or frame rate? I can settle on 2 copies of each video that way. One iBook/G4/eMac compatible video that syncs correctly with my srt soft subs, and another version that works well with my iPhone 4 and iPad.
All in all, I will end up with more than 3 or 4 version of each video. On my late G5 dual core I have the full 720-1080p uncompressed master files. On my i5 iMac I have the h264 compressed versions for distribution, and lower versions for my iDevices. Now I need to keep either full MPEG-2 files for the iBook to play, or convert to older formats like DivX AVI for our family's legacy machines. I am running out of hard disk space quick now, LOL.
    Is there an easier way?

  • Why are files going offline when exporting from premiere

    Hi all
I've got a feature length documentary of 2 hours. All files are online but upon exporting from premiere via media encoder the finished file has 'media offline' on some shots. I have NO idea why this is happening. All clips are online on the timeline.
I'm exporting both blu-ray mpeg and dvd mpeg. The project is on an external hard drive. Can anyone help this is a nightmare!?
Will exporting via premiere pro direct fix this problem?
    Thanks

Can't you see how the video is pixelated? Mainly around the nose and forehead?
Nope.  Looks fine when I watch it.

  • Color graded sequence won't export back into fcp as an xml or send to

    Hi,
I've finished a film and graded it. when everything is rendered, I export using either send to or as an xml. Both stop at around 50%. on the xml I get the following report.
I started out at a 20 min sequence then a ten minute sequence now I'm down to 5 minutes. i've got a 146 minute movie to grade and get back into fcp.
    Any help much appreciated.
    Cheers

The order of execution is confusing me.
On your first attempt, you tried sending the entire 146 minute project, graded and rendered it. Correct?
On Send To FCP, the XML failed... (hardly surprising)
This is where I get lost. Are you creating new, shorter versions, grading them and attempting to round trip the short sequences? and... if this is so, how are you differentiating these from the original monster failure? Do you have new render directories, paths, XMLs? Once an XML has been sent, it must not be re-used or re-sent or it will start appearing as ambiguous clones with conflicting path references.
And 146 minutes is too long for any single subject unless it is a remake of Warren Beatty's "Reds" or "Spending a little over two hours on a beach with Jessica Alba" so make it shorter... ;-P This is an undocumented feature of COLOR. No, really!

  • Cannot export back to FCP

I have a sequence that I mixed in STP. I have tried exporting the sequence back to FCP by using EXPORT>SEND FILES TO FCP SEQUENCE (worked before but not now). I have also saved it on the Desktop as a aiff file, but when I try to import it in FCP it says there is a file error and won't open.
I have sent the file from FCP to STP multiple times because I thought that the send off might be the problem but there is still no difference.
If I export from STP I can open the sequence in FCP and it looks mixed but there is absolutely no audio, not even the waveforms.
Any idea what is going on or what I can do to solve this?

Check your firewire cable. shouldnt be any difference between printing to video on 4.5 or 5. Or perhaps its something else. I am honestly aware of many problems I and some others are having with Tiger / FCP 5, this is not one of them that I'm aware of.
    PS Welcome to discussions!!!

  • Graded footage empty / black when sent back to FCP

I've done some basic grading of a short film in Color (purely applying the Film Look effect as a test), then rendered and sent back to FCP. The clips on the new 'from Color' FCP are now black/empty (although they're all the correct length and are still linked to the audio etc.). The widescreen matte is still on their too (not visible obviously, but the filters are showing in the tab).
I have done some more in-depth grading in Color in the past (different computer, different project), but I feel like I do know my way around Color and haven't done anything untoward. I'm just a bit confused as to why I'm getting this.
    Can anyone advise?
    I do have

Cuppla quick questions first, why would you apply a "Film Look" to film? It was maybe shot on well-exposed '45 and you want it to look more like '79?
And if you're only adding a filter, why not do it in FCP with a (better) plugin and not bother with all this roundtrip mucking about and doubling up your stored media?
Anyway, to the task at hand:
First thing to check, if the (from COLOR) sequence is empty, is invoke "Reveal in Finder" and if anything comes up then try to preview it in Quicktime. If there is a completely empty render directory, then you have committed a path/setup error when initiating the Render Queue. Odds on this is the case. Your renders may exist, but in the default COLOR folder-- if you loaded the queue first and then changed the target project directory. You must always designate the target and then load the queue. The return XML will reference the new target where placeholder grade subfolders will have been created... but not filled. So the return won't even link to source.
    Let me know...

  • Exporting back to FCP?

    Hello All,
I'm putting the final touches on a short documentary. This is my first time trying to do the sound properly by working with STP.
I have sent my FCP file to STP. I then work on it (in multitrack mode). When finished, I export it to FCP. I place it in the same file location as all my other assets concerning sound. From the tutorials I have taken, I am expecting the new mix to appear on the project as a master mix, with the individual sections that makeup the whole available, but deselected.
This isn't happening. Nothing happens on the FCP window other than the file appears in the browser. If I click that file, it says, "not available".
I'm sure I'm doing one important step incorrectly, but have reached the frustrating point of repeating the same wrong this over and over.
    Your help would be appreciated.
    Thanks.

  • Premiere CC - media offline when working with AE comps

I am working with Premiere CC and using After Effects CC comps for some Keylight 1.2  keying within the project - AE comps created in Premiere via "right click" on clip saying "superseded by AE comp".
The After Effects project incl. all the comps and Premiere project saved locally - same location, local.
Till now editing (P) & keying (AE) worked without any huge problems - due to using 4k material I had some play-back problems - not worth mention it though.
    POSSIBLE REASON? When it started:
With both open - AE and Premiere project - I worked on the key in the AE comps. When finishing the keying I saved the changes - what normally works finw without asking me WHERE to save it.
Now AE asked me where I would like to save the project although it should have a location already - as I saved it before locally.
So I saved it with the same name and same location - overwriting the "old" project. That was when the problem occured...
    PROBLEM:
Now the Premiere project can not find/link the AE comps / project. Saying: Media Offline.
Although it displays the right path in the Premiere project window!
    TRIED THIS:
In Premiere I tried to "Link to media". Which will work for any three of the 20 AE comps!
At the 3rd or 4th one I try to link (automatically doesn't work here for some reason?) Premiere either hangs after a while or "changes mind" and finds no links anymore - even those I relinked just minutes before will have no connection anymore - again "offline"!
Nonetheless, the After Effects project works fine. No problems here (project has neither a long name nor blanks).
Any ideas what could be wrong? How can I relink the comps? I am really clueless.
    Thanks for any suggestions!

Mylenium basically answered your question: quit both applications, manually clean Media Cache Database, restart PrPro and let it rebuild Media Cache Database (reconform files). Other than that provide information about your disk setup. Since AE wanted to know where to save project file, it might for some reason lost connection...

  • Sending back to FCP from Color no clips no sequence

So I am sure i am missing the blindingly obvious but would appreciate some help.
I am new ish to color but have read the manual and taken the Macpro video 1.5 training DVD to try and get up to speed.... Here is my problem:
I am sending a multiclip sequence to color (1080i pro res render). The clips appear in color and i am able to grade and render all OK.
When i send back to FCP i get a new sequence and new bin labeled with the clips.
however the sequence is empty and the bin contains a bunch of off line media. I can locate the new clips using finder but they are roughly 4 times the size of the original....
    Any help appreciated

What version COLOR? Multiclip is advertised to be functionally supported by COLOR 1.5, but it is not supported in any previous version. I am not familiar with the MacPro training DVDs, so I'm not assuming that it is tied to the current version.
When you say that they "render all OK"... are you sure about that? Why are the new clips about 4x the size of the original? That doesn't register as "OK" with me....
It could be a codec issue (doubt it) and it could be a speed remap issue (why not compound a known problem with another one?) and then it could be a renderqueue misdirection...

  • Only one angle is playing in multi clip sent back to FCP from Color

2 camera Multiclip edited and rendered in FCP 6, sent to color, played ok after color adjustment.
Rendered in color, and sent back to FCP; second angle in the clip is blank (black).
tried different settings in color prior to sending, same result.
The multi clip plays ok in FCP prior to sending to color, and plays ok in color prior to sending to FCP.
Any idea what is being missed here to make second camera show?

The fix you can try is to Media Manage the project exporting the active Multiclip selection as independent. With that, you might even be able to create a new COLOR prj and import color corrections, so not much repeated labour.
