Media Performance Warning:

Friends,
I have some file.avi ( standard def ) that have been given to me by a windows person. These import ( so far so good ) into FCP
but I do get the following warning.
Media Performance Warning:
The following media files are not optimized for Final Cut Pro HD
It is highly recommended that you either recapture the media or use the
Media Manager to create new copies of the files to improve their performance
for the multi-stream playback
so here is what I would like to know:
1. What is missing that an Optimized file would have?
2. Do I really have a problem or ...just a oddity?
3. How would _ if I realllly need to _ optimize these
would this be twice the disc space? and if so can I copy them ( how so ? ) and dlt the org AVI?
Thnaks!

Hi zimbot - export them out of fcp or qtPro as .mov (presume dv ntsc/pal) 48khz 16 bit audio.
Reimport to fcp.

  • Media Performance Manager

I exported my 1920x1080 ProRes HQ sequence as a Quicktime movie (using Export>QT Movie, Use current settings, make self-contained)
Takes about 30 minutes to export the 95 minute show, but when I bring it back into FCP I get the error that the clip is not optimized for Final Cut Pro, and that I should use Media Manager to do so. When I drop the clip on a timeline, that has all matching sequence settings, I get a render bar.
    Why?
This doesn't happen when I conformed the file to run at 25fps(in Cinema Tools) for PAL (don't ask me why I did, it's a deliverable)
Any insight into this error would be greatly appreciated.
    -Ricky

That was actually the step I was doing while I posted this. I changed from "Use Current Settings" to my actual current settings. Took just as long, and produced the same results.
The problem with a small scale test (and I do them often) is that I am willing to bet money that a smaller export would not yield the same results. I have tried before when exporting ref movs. Small 1-5 minute tests were fine, but the whole show would need rendering.
    Still baffled...

  • Media Jam warning keeps coming though I have no media jam!!

I had a paper jam in my Lexmark printer, which is now all sorted and it is printing fine but my Macbook keeps popping up with the warning symbol that there is something wrong with the printer. Although my mac does send the documents to the printer and they print fine, the little printer icon in my Dock keeps bouncing about with the exclamation mark symbol warning me there's something wrong, which is really annoying. How do I tell the computer that there is no printer jam and that it needs to calm down? Thanks.

Try to reset the printing system (http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1341) then manually add another print queue (http://bit.ly/11kgIrQ).

  • Missing media, yellow warning triangles.

I've recently consolidated my iTunes music library from an old external drive onto my new 1TB internal drive. Now I'm noticing in iMovie 09 that all the music is missing with yellow warning triangles.
Obviously iMovie is linking to the files that used to live on my old external drive. I can't find a way to repair the missing links.
Any ideas on how to fix this would be greatly received.
    Regards,
    Dave

I've just found a solution to this problem, a big thanks to David Burwell:
    Close iMovie
Back up iMovie files just in case we blow something up!!!
Download "Plist Edit Pro" from Apple (see below)
    http://www.apple.com/downloads/macosx/development_tools/plisteditpro.html
Go to the folder where your iMovie Project is stored, mine was at...
    User/Movies/iMovie Projects
Right mouse click on the Video Project (mine was called Rachel Video)
Select "Show Package Contents" from the drop down menu
You'll see a number of Folders and Files
Right mouse click on the file called "Project"
Select "Open With" and browse to the "Plist Edit Pro" file you just downloaded (if you don't already have it)
    Expand the $objects list
I scrolled down until i found the missing music file (Ship.mp3 - it will list the entire path)
If you know the file name you can Edit/Find it instead
Change the location pointer of the file (new path and file name)
Select File/Save from the Plist Edit Pro menu
    Quit Plist Edit Pro
    Open the project in iMovie

  • I need some help with AVI and IDX files please.

    Hello there,
I've just been given a hard drive with a load of media on it that I need to work with in FCP.
There's a folder with many .AVI clips, and each clip has an accompanying directory file with the extension .IDX
The format of the AVI files is DV, 720x576, 48kHz.
For the life of me, I can't get FCP to accept the media. Log and Transfer won't accept them, and if i bring in the AVI files in on their own using File>Import>Files... I get a message saying:
    Media Performance Warning
It is highly recommended that you either recapture the media or use the Media manager to create new copies of the files to improve their performance for multi-stream playback.
I can click 'OK' for this message and the media will appear in the browser, but If I place one of these AVI files on a new conformed sequence, the audio needs rendering. (Sequence settings correspond to media settings)
I tried just changing the wrapper from AVI to MOV, thinking I could fool FCP into accepting them, but I get the same rejection.
I thought the audio and video signals might be muxed, so I tried MPEG Streamclip to sort that out, but even MPEG Streamclip doesn't accept the media, saying : File open error: Can't find video or audio tracks.
Could anybody advise me on how to get the most out of these media files please?
    Thanks in advance.
    James.

yes. I tried transcoding in QT, but they still come in with the same audio rendering required. I'm a bit loath to convert them all though, as there are 1400 clips.
It's not a huge problem, as they do play in FCP, but I'd like to sort out the audio rendering. I don't understand why it needs rendering as the media and sequence audio settings match, and it's not some weird format or anything, it's bog standard 48kHz stereo.

  • IMovie HD to FCP HD

iMovie HD imports my HDV footage from my new Sony HDR-HC7camera, whereas my current version of FCP HD does not.
(I hear rumours that FCP 6 is about to be released, so I'm waiting to upgrade my FCP HD software from 4.5 to 6)
In the mean time I am searching for a way to use my footage imported into iMovie in FCP HD.
FCP HD won't open my iMovie projects, but it will import iMovie clips.
However: when I import the clips from my iMovie project into FCP HD the "Media Performance Warning" window pops up telling me that "the following media are not optimised for FCP HD"...
The clips do appear in the Browser, and do play back OK. They also render OK.
But before I spend hours editing a FCP HD project with these clips: does anyone have any experience with this? What are the implications of the "Media Performance Warning" message? Is there anything I should be doing now to avoid problems with editing or output later?
The other thing I haven't been able to work out: where exactly does iMovie store its clips?? There doesn't seem to be a designated folder for iMovie media (ie no "Capture Scratch" like in FCP). They just seem to be in the iMovie Project but you can't get at them other than by dragging them out of the Clip Pane in the iMovie project. Am I missing something here?

Sorry, I didn't look to see that you were using 4.4, even though you probably posted it. Sometimes I read too fast and don;t register everything. I think that 4.5 to 5.1 was about the same here as well. the $49 deal was only for people crossgrading from 5.0 to 5.1.
I haven't had any problems with 5.1 yet... but that probably because I haven't installed the disks yet... I guess...
I have too many projects working right now with 5.0 and other people not upgrading, and so far I have no limitations with 5.0. But I am getting to it...
Hope 6 is affordable for us semi-pros...
    Glad you found your answers.

  • Help with Final Cut Express HD?

Please help...if anyone can help me with this problem...
I have installed FCE HD and updated with the new version. I am using WD external hardrives as a scratch for my video files. I can capture the videos fine with no problems, but when I open up the files...
I get a: "Media Performance Warning" box, and it says:
"It is highly recommended that you recapture the media to create new copies of the files to improve their performance for multi-stream playback"
I am using 5 WD external harddrives...4 of them use USB and 1 uses Firewire to capture.
Some files don't have a warning while some do... can anyone tell me why this is happening and how can I fix this problem without trying to recapture everything again? Thank You very much!

I use non journaled as outlined here for the reasons given:
    http://www.kenstone.net/fcphomepage/filejournaling.html
    It's personal.
Firewire verses USB is not though. USB in most cases let you down as a media drive.

  • Exporting iMovie Project using Compressor.

I've just finished a 4-hour concert video in iMovie HD 6. I wonder if I could use compressor to encode file without exporting full quality movie at first. I have not enough HDD space left. I also tried to import iMovie project file to FCP but the timeline didn't work very well.
    Thx

    Sorry for the delay..
In FCP, use File and Open, then navigate to an iMovie project and select it - which should work even though "Standard Files" is shown as the format at the bottom of the "Choose a File" window. Then FCP will say "Reading Project", and then will ask where to store this new FCP project, and it would normally go in your "Final Cut Pro Documents" folder.
You may then get a "Media Performance Warning", which may say that the media files are not optimised for Final Cut Pro. But just click on OK, and they should load and play perfectly ..at least, mine do.
You say that you get the following error:
"File Error: 1 file(s) recognized, 0 access denied, 1 unknown."
That might be some kind of permissions error ..but you don't say what happens next: if it's "0 access denied", that suggests that FCP does have access to the file and should open it ..but maybe it stumbles over that "1 unknown".
So tell us; what happens after you get that error message? ..Does the file open or not ..and what happens instead of it opening? And why d'you get only "..1 file(s) recognized.." if you're opening an entire project which would normally consist of several files?
You say "..when I try to import my imovie file.." ..but why are you IMPORTING rather than simply OPENING the iMovie project in FCP? FCP can read iMovie projects, so it should simply be a matter of opening the project, not exporting it from iMovie and then importing it into FCP.
Look: here's a project in iMovie..
..and here's the same project opened (with File and Open) in FCP:
All the source files are there (..in that little list at top-left..) so that the whole project plays in FCP just as it does in iMovie HD 6.
[..For a bigger, easier to see, view of these pics, click on 'Start Slideshow' on this page..]
As for "..How can I get a copy of QT6 and keep it seperate?.." erm, if you were still on OS X 10.3.9 you could 'downgrade' from QT 7 to QT 6, but I don't know how to obtain - apart from your asking someone who has it - a copy of QT 6 now that only QT 7 is downloadable ..or search amongst your original installation discs.
Maybe somebody else here knows where to find and download QT 6; but I can't think where ..sorry! (..I don't know if this old version will work for you or not, or if it would interfere with QT 7..)
NOTE: That REMOVING QT 7 may interfere with running FCP!
NOTE: That if you have QT Pro 7, then going back to QT 6 may mean that your 'Pro' key will no longer work with QT 6, and you may be left with just the QT 6 player.
..That's why I advised keeping separate versions of 7 and 6, so that FCP isn't affected by the 6 downgrade. To keep them separate, you'd leave QT 7 in your Applications folder, and put QT 6 in, say, your 'Movies' folder. I do NOT know, though, if they use the same - or different - 'preference' files (..normally stored in "com. apple.quicktime.(etcetera)" in <your User name>Library/Preferences and in other Libraries).
I suggest NOT rummaging around and changing/moving/exchanging those preference files unless you KNOW what you are doing, or are advised by a specialist like Karl.

  • Media refuses to reconnect- something went awry with QT files

I posted this question a year back, and I'm just getting back to editing this project and I still haven't figured this out. I do have some new info, now, too.
I moved hundreds of gigs of footage from one drive to another.
This is my reconnect media workflow:
Select the offline files in the browser
    Go to File- Reconnect Media
    Select Offline Files
Files to Connect window shows the correct files
    I hit Search
FCP locates the media in it's new location
    I select "Choose"
And then the problem arises. The Media DOES NOT appear in the Files Located. The connect button does not light up.
I've done a lot of editing on this project already, so I need the files to reconnect properly. Any ideas?? I'm running 6.0.5
I HAVE tried the LOCATE Option- I DO find the media, but the problem is NOT that the computer cannot locate the files. It finds them just fine. It's just that for some reason once it finds them, it skips the part where it's supposed to connect them.
I just transferred all those files to NEW drive and the problem persists. However, this is what I discovered. If I try to drag the files to my browser, FCP gives me a +File Error: Unkonwn file+ message. +QT also tells me that The move could not be opened. The file is not a movie file+.
BUT when I look at the info for the files, the files are the size of QT files. For example, one of the files is 1.5 GB, and my finder calls them quicktime files. Before I start capturing all this footage over, can anyone suggest anyway to convert these files so they will work in FCP? They all at some point did work in FCP. Should I dump all these files from the new drive for good and start over?

OK, Agree, this is weirdness all over.
    So first of all:
I HAVE tried the LOCATE Option- I DO find the media, but the problem is NOT that the computer cannot locate the files. It finds them just fine. It's just that for some reason once it finds them, it skips the part where it's supposed to connect them.
You are aware of the fact that YOU have to select the specific file from the list it finds BEFORE the CHOOSE button becomes Blue? (Of course you are aware of that, but, well, you know, I have to ask...)
Also: This Performance warning is because of a codec FCP doesn't like.
Is there any application that WILL open these files. Apparantly FCP does although it protests... So what are the 'item properties' of these clips (Codec, frame size, frame rate; give us all). Are these settings the one you thought they were. How is the material captured from what source. What way are the drives formatted? HFS+ (wrong), MAC OS Extended (good)?
Did you do a check on your drives with Disk Utility or DiskWarrior or any disk-help-software?
Did you try to trash preferences (lots of threads about that).
Do you have the proper combination of FCP version and QuickTime version (lots of threads about that as well)?
I know a lot of questions. Sorry, but every question invokes a solution

  • Trying to compare FCP with Media 100 for a Public Access studio

    Hi all,
I am new here. I do most of the review of products for our Public Access studio. We have a couple of existing Media 100 systems and we are considering adding or upgrading our NLE capabilities. Our studio manager had a chance to look at FCP being used at our high school and she came back with a number of impressions that I wonder about and would like to vet with people who know more about FCP. So, any comments would be helpful.
The high school media person demo’d FCP for her and let her play with it a bit. After looking at it herself, she says she would definitely say Media 100 is easier to understand/use, especially if you've never used non-linear editing before. That is fairly typical of the people doing Public Access production in our town.
However, it looks to her like there are a lot of tools that come with FCP that Media 100 either doesn't have or are not easily found in it. For example, she feels FCP’s set up looks more complicated and confusing compared to Media 100’s, but in FCP you can have up to 99 video lines in a program, where with Media 100 we're just going back and forth between the a and b video lines. Plus you can have up to 99 Audio tracks on FCP as well, where our max at the moment is 8. Now as to when you would need 99 video or audio tracks, she is not sure, but it is definitely a capability that we don't have in Media 100.
Titling looked easier to her on Media 100. With FCP there were a lot of filters involved and hoops to jump through, plus she couldn't do a word with each letter a different color, for example, unless she did each letter on a different track.
The media person warned her that FCP is really large. Apparently the program itself takes up like 35 GB of space on the hard drive, and a typical 30 min. project comes in at over 100 GB! She couldn't believe it, but she was assured it’s true. Even with our longest programs, like like a School Committee meeting thqat went 3 1/2 hours, it would came in at a max of 30 GB on the Media 100. She got the impression this big difference was so because Final Cut renders everything you do, including rendering any edits you make on your footage as new files, and stores it all in a huge folder. She thinks with Media 100, you import the footage and use it as is - the only things it will render are screen freezes, transitions, and color effects. Is that sort of comparison correct (and fair), or is something being missed?
She says in her experience that something like iMovie is the most basic as far as what you can do, then Ulead would be a step above that- the editing is basically the same, but you have a few more options. Media 100 would be next as far as ease of use and understanding of the program. FCP seemed a little confusing even to her. Comments or insights?
    G4   Mac OS X (10.4.7)

    Welcome to the family, maybe.
I switched from M100 about four years ago, I was never so glad to give that company the boot. A direct comparison just isn't possible but I'll try to answer some questions. There is a Media 100 forum on creativecow.net.
she says she would definitely say Media 100 is easier to understand/use, especially if you've never used non-linear editing before.< </div>
Yes, absolutely, M100 has always had an elegant and refined interface. However, the paradigm in FCP is not opaque. It's far more interesting, deeper, more complex. So, yes, it's a bit tougher to grasp. But don't sell your students/users short. They'll get it.
99 tracks is marketing BS. The serious work is done with nesting. How many public access pieces need more than 5 or 10 video tracks?
Titling in FCP depends on third party filters like Boris or tools like LiveType and Motion. The basic titling tools in FCP are lame and difficult to use, in my opinion, compared to the elegant titler in M100 (as long as you don't launch Graffiti).
The installation includes tens of gigs of animation, movie and music loop resources that you don't need to load. The suite includes Motion, LiveType, Soundtrack Pro, DVD Studio Pro and FCP.
If you're shooting DV, a 3-1/2 hour show is, umm, well, you look it up, DV is DV. But if you're capturing 3 hours from each of three cameras, that's a lot of DV.
Rendering depends on lots of things. M100's native codec handles lots of realtime stuff that FCP can't unless you've got a huge Macintosh. Previewing is not a big deal at lower rez in FCP, you get used to it. .
FCP is really scary. You can look at thousands of "I'm in way over my head, HELP!" posts here. But all those folks find they slip right into the Apple paradigm, the weirdly new workflow and start exploring the wide new world of serious editing that FCP opens up. You'll hate it for a few months because it's so dramatically different from M100. You'll love it, though.
If you want to continue the thread, give the rest of the disaffected former M100 users a few days to post their comments. There are many of us here. Then maybe start a new thread, one question at a time.

  • Adobe Media Encoder 4.0.0.374 - Media Offline Error when encoding

My problem is a little urgent, so, if possible, i want a fast answer.
I edited my video in Adobe Premiere Pro CS4. When it was done, i tryed to export it, in File > Export > Media (Ps. In my program, i don't have File > Export > Movie). I set my video export settings, and then accepted. The Adobe Media Encoder 4.0.0.374 window appeared, with my project in the queue list. Then, i pressed in "Encode". First, the program is slower than normally to load the file, but i think it can be that my video is too long. After load, it starts to encode. After a time, in the preview box, appear the "Media Offline" ( and never is the same footage ) image, the same of Premiere Pro CS4. After a little, a "Encoding unsucceful. Unknown Error" appears, and the encoding stops. I don't know if is a Premiere Pro or Media Encoder error, so i posted here.
    Considerations:
Before i encode, i ever verify (and fix if necessary) if all videos of the project is linked, but ever time i reopen the project, some footages ( never the same ) are unlinked, and i have to link again.
I tryed to encode various differents formats, like AVI, WMV or F4V, but in every time i get the error. I tryed even to export first the audio, then the video, separated, to link after, but only the audio is succeful exported.
    I am using Windows 7 Ultimate, with a 4gb RAM, 1TB HD and Pentium Dual-Core 3Ghz.
I just got to encode with succes some times before. This is the first time it occurs.
I used the program (Premiere Pro) normally, some days ago, until 02/11. Since 03/11, it slowed. I just disabled all visual effects, disfragmented my disk, cleaned, and set the "Use more energy to more process" settings, but my program is still slow.
If needed more considerations, ask to me.
I just searched for similar problem, but dont got any result.
Sorry if my english is bad, i am Braziliam.

I have a similar problem. When I attempt to encode a list of clips, Media Encoder sometimes fails with a media offline warning. The media is just fine, nothing actually off line nor corrupted. If I elect to encode directly from Premiere Pro, the compilation proceeds normally. That's not practical when I have a list of clips and other things to do besides watch the creeping status bar.
My temporary fix was to uncheck the "import sequences natively" option. It's a little slower using the dynamic link, but it works, and my hair can start growing again.
This glitch appeared only with the latest update via Creative Cloud.

  • Read performance of a generically typed hashed table

    Hi,
I'm curious to know the how the read performance of a hashed table will be affected in the following scenario. I have a class with many static attributes of hashed table type. All these hashed tables have one thing in common. They have a field "GUID" as unique key. The processing logic is same for all tables and hence I made the code generic. For example, I have an importing parameter with which I can "derive" the name of my class attribute.
    field-symbols: <fs_table> type hashed table,
                           <fs_line> type any.
    lv_class_attr = derive_name( iv_object_name ).
    assign (lv_class_Attr) to <fs_table>.
read table <fs_table> with table key ('GUID') assigning <fs_line>.
Will this code block give me the same performance that I would get if I use specifically typed hash tables? The code inspector gives me a low performance warning. But what will actually happen at runtime?
    Regards,
    Arun Prakash

    Hi,
It is very simple. You defined table without unique key that why?.
Whenever we define the typed hased table it require the unique key required. In your case it is dynamic hased table. It's don't have any unique key, While build internal hased table it require unique key defination. by in case of non-type table don't know the unique key fields.
While reading data it will work like the standard table due to non unique key defination and It used the sequention read.

  • FCP export of rendered seq: some 'offline media' warnings in exported file

    Hi,
We had an issue last weekend with a file that was exported from FCP:
    - sequence was fully rendered in FCP
    - export Quicktime movie (not a QTref)
    - the exported file had an almost 1minute red 'media offline' warning in the middle of the file
    - when we checked the sequence again at that sport, all the media was still there and all was fully rendered
    - we did another export and all was fine ...
Anyone that had has this issue ?

Not particularly, but have you tried trashing all renders, then re-rendering?
It's possible the sequence was seeing a render file (but not connecting to it on export), when in actuality the clip/media is in fact off-line.
Give it a shot if you haven't and let us know.
Might also fill us in on details about your system and media you're working with.

  • Time code changes when reconnecting  media

I have been working on a project for over year. Recently my computer was stolen when shooting abroad and now I had to buy a new one (leopard op sys) and reinstall my software to continue working. As I recapture the lost media a warning window pops out: "you are about to capture non drop frame media to a drop frame clip......". My media was shot with a panasonic 100a (24p), and since I started the project I have been capturing with the DV NTSC setting (it captures 29.97 drop frame). When I recapture, the clips in the browser appear as reconnected but the TIME CODE changes, and clips on the timeline referencing that media still appear offline (others don't even if the referenced clip is the same). If I try to reconnect from the timeline it tells me that media start and end do not match. I will appreciate any suggestions.

Are you using a different camera/deck to capture this time than you used the last time?
