Media Pulldown in FCS 2?

Hi,
I exported a Final Cut Project file and burned off a DVD in DVD Studio Pro, upon playback on a computer there was a thin shaky line at the top of the screen.
On an SD television played on a DVD player, some of the texts (simple templates that I had used from LiveType) had a flickering effect on them.
I couldn't understand what went wrong because upon playback on my Canvas, everything looked fine.
I was recommended to do a Media Pulldown on the project prior to exporting it.
I can't seem to find where in FCP to do that though? Seems a common place procedure in Avid and/or Adobe, so I am wondering if it simply goes under another name.
Thanks for all help

a thin shaky line at the top of the screen.
Did you slow the video down on this project by any chance? If so, you are likely seeing the first scan line flickering because it is now stretching across two or more fields and is there for longer than it would normally be.
Even my million dollar Quantel Henry could not get around that problem, back in it's day. Just the limitations of the medium. You might try cropping the top of the video to remove it.
What typefaces did you use? Sans Serifs do not translate well to television.

  • Does Final Cut Server include Final Cut Studio Apps?

    Hi All,
Does Final Cut Server include all the Final Cut Studio Apps, or are these two packages that I'll have to buy separately?
    Thanks,
    Rajnesh
    G5   Mac OS X (10.4.5)   Dual Proc 2.7GHz; 8GB Ram

They are indeed separate packages. One is a set of media creation apps (FCS), the other is an asset management system for projects created in those apps (FC Server).

  • Is there any way to manually relink media in FCS?

We recently transitioned from NFS to AFP (Apple Filing Protocol) for our shared storage in our FCS environment.
There have been a couple of headaches involved, but it has been a largely smooth transition except for one problem.
A couple of our assets (some of the most important ones, naturally) had colons ( : ) in the filenames. This was fine for NFS - the backing store's filesystem could handle them. But AFP cannot since apparently OS X considers the colon an unusable character in file names due to its own directory requirements.
So we are left with a handful of assets that are fully annotated in FCS, comprehensive metadata, etc. that show the original media files as missing. The files are there - they were just renamed automatically by the system to replace the colon.
I am wondering if there is any way to tell FCS that the filename has changed since there is no possible way that I can change the filename back.
If I have to get my hands dirty on the FCS command line to accomplish this, I am not hesitant to do so. I just don't know how to go about doing it...
    A bit about my system:
Apple Xserve running Snow Leopard (10.6.3)
    Final Cut Server version 1.5.2
The backing stores are presented via AFP using Netatalk from a Linux-based storage array (I know this unconventional but it actually works quite well - except the "no colons in AFP or Apple native filenames" issue...)
If there is anyone out there who can shed some light on this, I would really appreciate it!
    Thank you all!

    Thank you for the clarification.
Indeed you are correct - the Netatalk documentation merely implies that the colon is a forbidden Mac OS character - not a forbidden Netatalk character.
Netatalk itself (at least in my case on Ubuntu 10.04) does handle the translation of the colon in a way that is comprehensible to Mac OS.
The colon was truncated to a double-quote (") when I attempted the rename on the Linux command line. After seeing this, I renamed the file again on the Linux command line to remove the colon.
When using the Mac OS command line (terminal), I was able to get the file to reflect a colon:
    $ cp ./file.mov ./file\ duration\ 10\:00.mov
While the Finder will not permit a colon in the filename under any circumstances (at least not as far as I can tell), the command line will permit it if you use the escape character (\).
In the Finder, the new file shows as "file duration 10/00.mov" but if you run an "ls" on the command line it shows as "file duration 10:00.mov" which is correct.
In Linux, it shows as "file duration 10:2f00.mov" so Netatalk handled the markup in such a way that it is able to present the correct filename to the Mac OS.
Despite the Finder/Terminal name mismatch (the filename having a "/" in the Finder display), FCS is perfectly happy, since it reads the filename directly.
And if you don't want to get your hands dirty on the command line, using a forward-slash (/) in the filename within the FInder does translate to a colon when you view the file from the terminal, as was described by slowfranklin above. (I am from a Unix background where the slash is a (sometimes the only) forbidden character, so I also used the command-line method just to see if it would work)
Thank you very much for pointing me in the right direction.

  • Can I use FCS without the media?

Can Final Cut Server be used as just an information database without the media the info references? We're using Filemaker right now, but we have FCS. We don't have the budget for a full online system for final cut server (all of the hard drive space required), but we do have some.
I just want to know if FCS requires having the media attached as well. I'd like our entire office to be able to use FCS at the very least to find information on our media and know how to get to even if the drive that has the media isn't online.

    To answer your last question
    Question:
Does this mean that FCS requires you to import the media before it will retain any information or before I can delete the media and it retains the info?
    Answer:
Yes, FCSvr requires you to import an asset before you can apply metadata to it. This can be a 1 second Quicktime movie to conserve on hard diskspace.
    Question:
If I just wanted to manually type a record for our media could I do that?
    Answer:
    No
So for the rest of your question, I have for example create scripts that take records from a Filemaker .csv dump and done the following.
    Scenario:
    Filemaker
Outputs a .csv file with information pertaining to asset, these records have a filename as part of the records, but if your data doesn't have a filename it's ok.
    Final Cut Server (script)
    1. Reads the CSV file and 1 record at a time create assets in Final Cut Server will retaining the metadata from Filemaker.
This way you can use Final Cut Server to search for files. If you use the original files vs (dummy i second files) you can actually view the proxies to see what the assets are.

  • Reconnect media dialogue not working properly after advanced pulldown rem..

i'm running a macpro with the latest version of FCP (5.1.4) and tiger (10.4.9)
i have a project where some of the footage is 24Pa, but was captured as regular 29.97 ntsc footage. because it's 24pa it's creating some interesting banding when i try to export out with out removing the pulldown. in an attempt to remedy this problem i decided to remove the pulldown and export everything as a 23.98 file (it's going on the web)
I selected all the clips that needed to have the pulldown removed and used the "remove advanced pulldown" from the tools menu. fcp went through and processed everything as it should, but when it finished it only reconnected a couple of the clips, leaving the rest offline.
I then selected the offline clips to manually reconnect them, and the reconnect dialogue opens, it lets me choose the files, but it doesn't show the file in the bottom half of the window, but it will continue to let me choose the next file down, the problem is when i hit the end of the list of files to reconnect, it still shows all the files in the top, and none in the bottome, but the "skip" "locate" and "search" button are no longer available and the "connect" button at the bottom is also not available.
i've checked the processed files with quicktime and they all read as 23.98 files now.
I made a copy of all the media files beforehand, so i have all the raw captures as 29.97 clips just as a forethought.
any ideas as to what the issues are? and why the reconnect dialogue is acting so strangely?
    2.66 macPro   Mac OS X (10.4.9)   2gb ram fcp 5.1.4

This shouldn't work. What the proper way of doing things is to capture, reverse telecine, THEN import into FCP and begin editing. You cannot, AFAIK, edit, then reverse telecine and have it connect. This is because all the original clips are linked to 29.97 media, and you are trying to connect them to 23.98 media...and it doesn't want to because the frame rates differ.
Remove pulldown BEFORE you edit, not after.

  • Any FCS 3 install media in Columbus, OH?

Gah! I had to rebuild my laptop and re-install everything. I cannot find my installation media for Final Cut Studio 3.
Is there anyone in the Grandview Heights, OH area that would be willing to let me use their media? I am NOT asking for a license.
    -David

You realize that by saying your post solved the problem, you didn't give Christina any solved points?
In any case - a good practice is to make DMG images of all your FCS discs. This not only can help if your discs become lost or damaged, by mounting all the DMGs at once and starting the install, it can take as little as 20 minutes.

  • FCS 2 & Tutorials with Media?

    FCS 2 installed! yeah
i see the DVD Tutorial, but no Tutorial with project files & media?
Did i miss something or not get the disk?
in FCS 1 there was such tutorial projects and media...

I felt the same way. The only thing is the DVD tutorial that you watch. But it is pretty good. And broken down into nice sections.

  • FCP 7 (FCS 3) and AVID media Composer 6 together?

Is anyone using FCP 7 (Final Cut Studio 3 and all related software) and AVID media Composer 6 together on the same operating system?
If so which one are you using - Snow Leopard or Lion and are there any Issues with either?
    Cheers

I bought MC 5.5 last summer, and upgraded to 6 when it came out. I have FCP 7 and family installed on the same system as well as CS5. All work great. I have this setup on a 2011 13" MBP running Lion. It works great. I like having all three on the same system, it really gives me a lot of flexibility. And I also have the same setup on a 2010 iMac 27, only this one has Snow Leopard and MC 5.5. I'm getting ready to switch it to MC 6, and take the MBP back to Snow Leopard though, it's just been sluggish since the upgrade. Other than that, I've had no problems with FCP and Avid living in the same house, if fact it's just been plain handy.

  • Unhappy with FCS 2 HD pulldown quality

The only method I'm aware to pulldown from HD is to copy and paste from an HD timeline to an SD timeline and render. And things look fine during playback. But if paused, you'll notice a thin line where the matte meets the video. And unfortunately, this line carries through when I use Compressor 3.0.1 to encode it into a DVD, even with the highest bit rate. I can use the deinterlace filter, set to blur, to remove the line but then the whole picture has a fuzzy look.
I just discovered that using compressor to encode the high quality mpeg2 gets rid of the lines. However, I'm using both HD and SD footage in my project so this technique won't work here.
Given my limitations to only these programs, and no options hardware-wise, is there a better technique to go from HD footage to an SD DVD - that incorporates both HD & SD?

Well, is there another format that I can down convert to so I can edit in my DV footage?
Well, to edit DV footage, you need a DV timeline...but what will you be outputting to? DV? If so, then there's nothing you can do. DVD? Then try a ProRes timeline....at the end. As in COpy and Paste your footage into one when you are ready to output. You'll have to render everything but that's a good thing.
Any hardware you would recommend for HD down convert?
AJA Kona 3 or Kona LH. But that downconverts when you output to tape only. Again, what is your final format to be?

Thanks for the link to the remover. I had been using AppZapper and was going to try something similar. Removing qmaster did the trick to get Final Cut to open. And... I can say it is a fine speed improvement for me on video scrubbing and other things from the first playing around.
As soon as qmaster is back in the mix... crash on startup.
Installing qmaster with Pacifist doesn't cause the daemon to start like the FCS installer. So, I thought starting from the terminal might lead to better data for troubleshooting. So far, when qmaster is installed launch Compressor will start, but it doesn't recognize the computer as a Quick Cluster and Qadministrator will crash when trying to create one. So, now it is diving into the qmaster preference files to see if Pacifist didn't copy in the machine name or something simple.
Thanks to those sticking with this thread. At least I can function with editing now and I can export using QuickTime. I am just without the services of Compressor and its batching until I can find the clue missing with the cluster (at least that's where I am thinking the next step is).

  • Looking for help on what Hardware to use for FCS

I am looking to set up a shared storage for use in a small editing network and I am having a hard time getting my head around what exactly I need.
I have 4 edit stations that currently run externals. I am looking at a solution like FCS to centralize all the captures and media to edit from. We usually edit Apple Pro res and DV footage.
My understanding is that we need to connect to the storage using Fibre to get the bandwidth needed. My issue is wondering exactly how much hardware I need to get this done and what the layout of this hardware should be.
I currently have a Mac Pro that could be dedicated as the server running FCS. I plan on buying a Fibre connected storage RAID and outfitting the 4 Mac Pros in the office with Fibre cards. I am guessing I need to connect all of this with a Fibre switch. Is this all I would need? Would I be able to capture and edit off of the RAID using this configuration? What else would I need?
I have been looking for diagrams or some type of examples of configurations people have use and not been able to find much. Any advice would be great
    Thanks

XServe, Promise RAID, QLogic Sanbox 20 port fiber switch, XSAN software, 5 Mac Pro Fiber cards.
That's pretty good, assuming you have the numbers right. You need Xsan software and a Fibre Channel card for every computer connecting via FC (the Xserves and Mac Pros). Note that the 20 port switch has 16 usable ports, and each storage or computing device should connect to two ports, so you've basically filled it up with what you've listed.
I also have an XServe that is on the (10 GB ethernet) network (in another building on campus) that is currently being used as a login/account manager (could it be used for metadata as well?).
It would be good to use this as the failover MDC to support the one you are purchasing. Can you relocate it so it is physically closer? It should be Intel. It is not recommended to have the primary MDC perform directory or other services, but some people do this (at a slight risk) on a secondary server.
Will I need to reduce one of the Mac Pro editors to merely a metadata controller (leaving me with 4 editors)?
Not recommended, except maybe as a backup.
Can I use the existing network for the LAN and METADATA Switches?
You'll need a separate network for metadata traffic. This can be physical or virtual (on higher-end switches).
@trezero-your list is the first I've seen with 3 XServes. Is this just because of FCServer? Can you not use the MDC or one of the networked editors?
FCServer warrants its own machine since it is fairly CPU intensive, especially if you are doing transcoding on it. In high performance environments people will add a second machine just to do rendering.
Don't put any other server process on the MDC. You could use the backup MDC for FCSvr, but this isn't recommended since if it gets failed over to, then it is no longer the backup, and you're again risking your Xsan integrity on a shared system. In an educational lab setup where the risk of downtime is not an inconvenience, you could probably get away with it.
You would probably benefit from either taking the Xsan class or working with a professional systems integrator. I'm based in the Southeast and can refer you to a few people if you contact me offline.

  • How do I create my own favorite template for DVD slideshows? I used to be able to select this from pulldown menu, but cannot now do so. I am directed straight to templates, which take more memory. I have a large slideshow, and need all the space I can get

First, how do I create my own favorite theme template for DVD slideshows? I used to be able to select this from pulldown menu, but cannot now do so. I am directed straight to already existing themes, which take more memory. I have a large slideshow, and need all the space I can get. I just want to use a picture as my DVD cover, and then insert a slideshow. Also, when I try to burn my 8.5gb double sided slideshow, all that burns is the music. It is a large slideshow, a memorial on the life of my now deceased brother. This means a lot to me and to my family, and I am having so much trouble trying to burn it. I have gone into Project View and selected appropriately. The bar shows I have room to burn this DVD, but it does not burn.  I have burned so many DVDs in the past, but this one just will not burn. I am so confused at this point. I will say this is the first 8.5gb I have attempted to create and burn. My specs list a 7.7gb or 4.7gb as operable....but there are no 7.7gb dvds. I had to purchase 8.5gb. Help? What am I doing wrong? I have spent so much time on this, and just cannot figure it out.

Final Cut is a separate, higher end video editor.  The pro version of iMovie.
Give iPhoto a look at for creating the slideshow.  It's easy to assemble the photos in an album in iPhoto, put them in the order you want and then make a slideshow of them.  You can select from various themes and transitions between slides and add music from your iTunes library.
When you have the slidshow as you want use the Export button at the bottom of the iPhoto window and export with Size = Medium or Large.
Save the resulting Quicktime movie file in your Movies folder.
Next, open iDVD, choose your theme and drag the QT movie file into the menu window being careful to avoid any drop zones.
Then follow this workflow to help assure the best qualty video DVD:
Once you have the project as you want it save it as a disk image via the File ➙ Save as Disk Image  menu option. This will separate the encoding process from the burn process.
To check the encoding mount the disk image, launch DVD Player and play it.  If it plays OK with DVD Player the encoding is good.
Then burn to disk with Disk Utility or Toast at the slowest speed available (2x-4x) to assure the best burn quality.  Always use top quality media:  Verbatim, Maxell or Taiyo Yuden DVD-R are the most recommended in these forums.
The reason I suggest iPhoto is that I find it much easier to use than iMovie (except for the older iMovie 6 HD version).  Personal preferences showing here.

  • What configuration of the new macbook pro do I need to run FCS 3 without choppy playback.

Yep, just wondering what configuration of the new macbook pro do I need to run FCS 3 without choppy playback or lagging.  I'm thinking about the 7200rpm, 2.2ghz, antiglare, 4gb ram, with 1gb GPU graphics card configuration

Nothing wrong with the computer. Playback is dependent on the media and the drives.

  • How can you install FCS 3 on a computer that already has FCPX?

Ok so, I wiped my computer to install Lion, and then installed FCP X. I now want to install Final Cut Studio 3, but it won't let me install Final Cut, Motion, or Compressor (the other apps install fine). Presumably this is because I have downloaded the new versions of those respective apps from the app store.
I know you can install FCP X on a computer with FCS3 on it (and still be able to use both versions of FCP) but can you do the opposite? If so I haven't found out how (short of installing on a different disk/partition of course). I tried moving FCPX out of the applications folder (in hopes that it was as simple as the installer checks the apps folder first for another copy of Final Cut) but that simply moved an alias and as far as I can tell, FCPX cannot be moved out of the applications folder.
Anyone have any ideas or experienced something similar?
    Thanks!

Hey Brad thanks, but the link you provided is the opposite of what I need. That link is for if you want to install FCPX on a system with FCS 3 already on it. I have FCP X already installed and need to install FCS 3 on the same drive.
I cannot move the FCPX, Motion 5, or Compressor 4 applications to a new folder, because when I do it only moves an alias over for some reason (not the actual application).
@Ronnie yes I know I can install another copy of OSX on another drive/partition and install FCS 3 on that, but I am trying to not have to do that. Clearly FCPX and FCS 3 can exist on the same partition if you install FCS 3 first, so why can't I do it if I already have FCPX installed? Seems silly. I also do not want to have to reboot each time I want to go into FCS3, not to mention all of the disk space I would lose by installing the OS on one of my other internal drive (which currently are all filled with Media drives, so I would have to repartition a sizable chunk of one of them just for FC Studio).

  • Looks like a pulldown issue, duplicated frames are baked into transcoded files...

Have a bit of a messy project atm...this started with a client call on my way back from a festival where I ran large format video screens as a VJ & camera switcher/editor (Sasquatch in NW USA) so I was tired from 5 solid days of work.  I dropped by their studio to examine an example clip…tired and thinking they had a good test case pulled up & ready to look at.
Well, the first clip we analyzed ONLY had shutter speed issues.  Checking the source file/.mov it was apparent it was shot at a shutter speed closer to 1/1000 than 1/60, adding a bit of pixel motion blur in AE solved that...  In retrospect his export from FCP7 had the pulldown problems in the EXPORTED version of the clip, but we hadn't checked that (we watched the source clip play back and he sent the reference clip with me so I could match the edit).  So the issues that have been in almost all subsequent clips were not present in the initial analyzed file unfortunately!   When I got back to my workspace & the files were ingested it became obvious that there's a bad pulldown at work in most of the transcoded footage.  The client had mentioned it looking 'choppy' and rather than just being motion blur it was a case of duplicate frames.  Bad pulldown removal...
MOST of the footage as I have it is ProRes 4:2:2 LT 29.97p  with every 3rd frame duplicated (1 out of 3 duplicated rather than 1 out of 5).   The ProRes format didn't come from a digital recorder in this case, it was transcoded from the source media using a software tool to organize & collect the source media and compressor to transcode for editing.  Since these 2 episodes were left in the editing pile for months, the source files are obviously *no longer around*….
In the past I've dealt with reverse pulldown issues from 24p & 24pA (where the frames are either interlaced or duplicated to achieve the pulldown) but these all give a 5 frame cadence.  Also when done correctly they don't destroy good frames and leave frame dupes.  What we have here seems more like improperly handled PsF (via HDMI or SD output from 1080p cameras) or pulldown incorrectly applied to 29.97 over 60i/59.94i, or...?   In any case these are destined for 60i broadcast, so simply interlacing them again to create the 3rd frame is out of the question, and frame blending isn't much better than the dupe frames.
Removal of every 3rd frame which (since that = every 2nd frame) obviously gives a visual "jump" over the now removed dupe frame, and leaves footage has to be converted from 20p to 29.97 which looks horrible regardless of how its done (conformed or interpolated).    Removal of every 3rd frame from 29.97 is actually not too hard, as 2/3rds of the frames are still 'good' it's easy to
apply a conform to the file headers bringing the rate down to 19.98p, bringing that into AE and creating a comp that's set to 'preserve frame rate when nested' under advanced, then putting that into a 29.97 comp..., that works relatively well but the missing frames STILL need to be replaced somehow...
To make matters worse, some clips have a cadence that doesn't stay consistent (the repeated frames will 'jump' from every 3rd periodically), OR worse yet there are sometimes 4-6 duplicated frames in a row (???), and then other sequences have only occasional frames repeated (meaning they need to be identified manually by stepping frame by frame).  Some of this is potentially due to rounding errors in the pulldown, but there's got to be something more amiss as is evident by the other inconsistencies...very odd.
In any case what do to about the 3rd frames that need to be 'repaired' or 'created'?  This is the crux of my issue, and software interpolation alone isn't going to cut it...  Since a simple pass on the entire clip(s) causes vast sections get time stretched (not just every 3rd frame synthesized but rather the whole thing interpolated), I tried going in and setting timestretch keyframes manually (so I could manually stretch the area where the 3rd frame needs to be 'created).  As the software applies motion techniques that obviously assumes the distance between frames in both directions is equal...well it just replaces 1 visual problem (dupe frames) with another (visual distortions).   This has been the case with ALL the software tried so far...
I've tried AE's native higher quality mode (rather than just frame blending, which will look awful.  Twixtor (demo) in AE, Smoke (autodesk), DaVinci Resolve (Light version but I have access to the GPU accellerated version as well) &  Apple's Motion.  All do a horrible job (FootageFIxing directory examples in dropbox) of handling this automatically, which I expected.  However I had originally intended to simply 'replace' every duplicated frame using the interpolated footage, this resulted in WORSE matching to surrounding frames due to the poor interpolation not matching up well on many frames than frame blending, not better (portions of the frame 'jump' out of alignment with both the previous & following frames, after analysis it acts like a spine with a midpoint that is not parallel to a line drawn between the start & end points).
So dropping 29.97 to 20p then synthesizing every 3rd frame (until cadence jumps) is where I'm at.  Once done synthesized frames have to be checked and a huge % of them (when there's motion on a person in the scene or camera pans etc) have elements…or whole frames…that are incorrectly synthesized.  So pieces of surrounding frames have to be roto'd & composited into selective areas to 'patch' the portions that get 'squashed', 'stretched' or 'rippled' into position (VERY VERY noticeable).
Lastly, due to a variety of shutter speeds used the motion blur across frames is also an issue, so once a shot has been correctly re-synthesized for the missing frames it must be evaluated for whether motion blur is required, which brings us back to the rendering process that was assumed at the start of this (in other words final output of each clip may need motion blur in post before delivery).
At this point I'm left with doing the synthesis of the 3rd frame and 'repairing' the areas of that which distort too heavily, or duplicate (some of the camera pans are done to track high speed motion, birds flying through frame etc)...
Anyone have any interesting techniques I could try, beyond telling the studio I'm working with that they're hosed (that discussion is coming but I'm going to show best efforts and the timeframe required to achieve that across all shots/edits)....

Oh and the easier way to removing the dupe frames was just to drop it to 19.984, set (nested) comp advanced settings to 'preserve framerate when nested' and watch for the occasional rounding error when back in a 29.97 container composition.  It would be nice to be able to specify 29.976...
In any case the missing frame needs to be replaced, not removed.  The visual jump i that gap actually looks to be closer to 2 frames when motion of objects is estimated by hand.
Also (as I think I mentioned) other clips seem to have even further oddities.
The reality is that I can actually create smoother motion by doing a lot of hand massaging of the footage (scaling previous frames in simple pans, hand-rotoscoping/masking/compositing in sections of frames around missing ones to synthesize motion in onscreen talent & background objects, things tracked across the screen by the camera and so on.
But that's a heck of a lot of work and probably beyond what's achievable at present I suspect...
