Media server location(s)

I am currently testing the functionality for ACS4 and would like to know if it is at all possible to specify more than one media download location.  We have users in remote areas and they will use our store to buy the e-books, but we would prefer to keep the original encrypted documents on a media server closer to their location. We would then decide which media server mirror to use based on the user's credentials. I tried tweaking the resourceItemInfo\src tag in the acsm file that is generated by the store to see if this can point ADE to a different server but get an error when trying to download the document.  Is this possible at the moment?

Hannes

Hi,
Did you enable the WMM(Wirless multimedia),multicast also .
It should work after that.
Good Luck !!!!

  • Itunes media folder location on Mac Mini server

if i want to move my itunes library on my MacBook Pro to my MacMini server, do i create a new folder called Itunes Media on the server or do i install itunes on the server (MacMini) and use the iTunes folder

That simply tells iTunes where to put new files.
It does not add anything to iTunes.
You should keep the entire iTunes library (iTunes media and all library files) in one location.
    Do this...
    Connect external to old computer.
Copy /Music/iTunes/ folder from internal drive to external drive.
On the external, move the iTunes media folder into the iTunes folder you just copied to the external.
Hold Option, launch iTunes, select Choose library... and select the iTunes folder on the external.
    Everything should work fine.
    Quit iTunes.
    Connect drive to new computer.
Hold Option, launch iTunes, select Choose library... and select the iTunes folder on the external.
    Everything should work fine.
This is all you need to do.
This will bring all your playlists, ratings, comments, everything from old computer.
You do not need to change the iTunes media folder location in iTunes prefs..

  • GEO Location with Flash media server 4.5

Ok so here is what im having issues with... i have 3 servers france, LA,Florida all using Flash media server Enterprise.. now my issues is my site has 5 channels of feeds but i have people from all over the world and some get bufffering issues to my servers cause they are too far.. now if my floplayer or fms could somehow tell where they are and point them to the closer server is this at all possible?

I have not used Flowplayer but is there a way to find bandwidth between client and server using Bandwidth API's which FMS & AS provides - now before using any server you can do quick check and server which returns connection in minimum time and has better bandwidth and then choose that server. I think some delay uprfront is much better in terms of usablity than constant buffering.

  • What's the best way to setup a media server/central storage for all of my?

I was wondering what the best way to achieve a central media server for all my iTunes content + iPhoto's, calendar syncing and contact sharing is? This is what I currently have:
iMac 20" Aluminum + External HD Backup (kids)
    Macbook Black (wife)
    Macbook Pro 15" (me)
    Airport Extreme 802.11n (obvious)
TimeCapsule 1TB (wifi backup for wife/me)
I would like to replace my PC in my office with a brand new Mac Pro Nehalem 8-Core, 8GB Ram, and 4TB, and replace my PC laptop in my living room attached to my tv, with an Apple TV.
I want to centralize all our Photos from vacations, etc. Music, videos, movies, that are currently split up over wife's macbook, kids imac and my macbook pro onto my soon to be purchased Mac Pro.
I want to be able to stream everything from my living room via Apple TV for when guests come over, dinner parties, etc. (plus I love apple and it keeps things clean)
I'm currently using MobileMe to sync all of our Calendars and Contacts with my main account, which is great, but MobileMe doesn't sync to family members accounts =
What would I need to do to centralize all this onto my future Mac Pro so that everyone has access all the time when they are home and the key here is, modify/update/change from their machines and sync it back/update it on the Mac Pro.
Also, I'm hoping Snow Leopard has some changes to iTunes to make this a little more possible, since we're right around the corner from this release. I don't really want to spend an additional $900+ on Snow Leopard Server to have to achieve these results, but if it makes it easier, and does the job, then I guess I might. This is all speculation though, since it's not out yet. I'd like to get this all sorted and setup within the next month.
I was considering a Drobo, they say they can throw up iTunes Server but, I appreciate everyone for reading this, and taking the time to respond!
    Thanks!

I'm in the process of setting up a smaller (and cheaper) but somewhat similar setup to what you want to do, so maybe one example might help point you in the right direction. My needs consist of a centralized location for data storage, which will include iPhoto libraries (I keep two separate ones), iTunes (which I also want served to the home theater system), something other than my laptop to play internet videos and downloaded content on my TV, all with ideally the lowest cost and energy use possible.
My solution was the new Mini with a FW800 external drive as the server/media hub and Airport gigabit as the network hub (it also handles the backup drive).
FW800 is fast enough to saturate a gigabit ethernet link, so I don't consider that much of a bottleneck. The Mini then has iTunes running at all times with its centralized library on it; it is hooked to the home theater via HDMI-DVI video and optical audio, so it can play music and also handle videos when desired; Front Row with the Apple remote is close enough to an AppleTV that I think it handles that well, and it's more full-featured than an AppleTV. It can further be used to display photos/slideshows/whatever on the TV for guests or such, or to surf from the couch with a wireless mouse/keyboard. You can also toss in an EyeTV for $150 and use that as a DVR if you feel like it.
When I want to edit photos or such on my desktop, the gigabit link is fast enough that I can run iPhoto without noticing any significant slowdown. Its also usable over wireless, though I have a dangling extra network cable to plug into a laptop for full gigabit speed if need be. iTunes, of course, shares its library, which can be played from any of the computers in the house if so desired (iPhoto can do that too if you just want to display).
If I REALLY wanted top speed (though I've even done video editing in iMovie via ethernet without issue), I could use a third party synch app (I like Sync) to mirror any of the content from the mini server to a local drive; this works fine with anything but multi-way synching, such as address books being modified in different locations. I'd probably try to set up one of those Mobile Me clone systems or use a 3rd party app if I needed to do that.
Again, maybe this isn't powerful enough or "synched" enough in terms of local storage for your taste, but the advantage is that a Mini uses a minute fraction of the power of a Mac Pro, so you're saving a lot on electricity if the computer will be powered up at all times as a server, and it's also a lot more full-featured as a home theater media hub than an AppleTV. And, heck, the thing is about as well equipped as my old top-of-the-line G5 tower for a 5th the cost and 1/15th the power and noise.

  • ITunes as a Home-Based Media Server - Large Library Storage, etc...

So, my iTunes library is approaching a size where it will soon be able to declare its own gravitational constant. But that's because besides all of the numerous TV seasons included there, I 'ingest' a good number of my own movies and shows (for backup purposes you understand), and so I can see a time where my library will outgrow the single internal 2TB drive I have in my G5 tower.
The last time I tried to store my library on an external drive, I had nothing but problems, so I moved it inside the desktop, which solved that problem, but now I'm worried about space. I'd rather not have to dump files to optical storage, because loading it back in is a real pain. I'd rather be able to 'add' storage when it's needed and on-the-fly.
Is it possible to store your iTunes library on a network storage device (drive array like a drobo, etc) which would be sufficient to feed at least one appleTV, and 1 desktop computer (simultaneously if necessary) with no real trouble like lag or pauses or constant re-syncs? And if so, is there one that would allow me to just drop in another drive to add space?
Anyone have any experience with this? I'm looking at bumping the ceiling, but I don't want to have to start dumping stuff...
    Thanks!
    -Tony

No one seems to be answering your original question, so I'll try based on my own findings.
As a qualifier, I have three Macs, an Apple TV (old style) iPhone, iPad and a variety of external drives and 4 NAS drives at my disposal.
Assuming you use a fairly new type of NAS drive you should be able to run the Mac (and from it, the Apple TV) using either the NAS set to an AFP or SMB share, which you would point your iTunes Media folder location to.
The only problems I've encountered so far, are that if you are streaming a movie from Apple TV you can't import Music or Movies into iTunes without the movie stuttering.
Playing music on two Macs at once has no problems and if you use a NAS with a new version of Firefly or Twonky, you can stream direct to iTunes or other uPNP devices.
Out of the NAS drives I've tried, the newer WD MyBookWorlds are ok although if you want to get the maximum protection and drive upgradeability I'd suggest a RAID 5 setup like the Netgear ReadNAS pro series.
As far as iTunes 10 goes, Both Netgear and WD work fine from the shared folder, although the ReadyNAS needs beta RAIDiator 4.1.7 if you want to use the iTunes Server, the WD needs a firmware upgrade which WD say is in the works.
On my older Buffalo Terrastation NAS drive, because long filenames aren't supported under AFP, this causes problems if you want to just copy your iTunes folder using the Finder, the same kind of issues occur on the Lacie NAS.
As far as getting your iTunes from your Mac to the NAS, I find the best way is to first make sure your iTunes is working a 100% on your local Mac, mount the NAS as an SMB share (unless you are never going to use 3rd party kit like Sonos, iTunes Windows etc.) then go to iTunes/Preferences… and change the location of your iTunes Media folder from it's default of ~/Music/iTunes/iTunes Music or iTunes Media and point it to the shared media folder on the NAS drive.
Make sure you select both 'Keep iTunes Media folder organised' and 'Copy files …'. Click OK and then select File/Library, Organise Library. This will take a while as it copies all the local media files over to your NAS drive, but most importantly, it changes the filenames to suit any NAS SMB share restrictions and won't hiccup halfway through the copy just because it encounters a filename the PC/SMB share won't accept.
Finally, keep regular backups of the NAS, as any new music will only be stored there.

  • ITunes not storing files in iTunes media folder location

A number of years ago I wanted to move my itunes media files to an external drive. At the time an article was posted that explained how to do such that. Additionally the article explained how to put the media files in one folder on the external file server and all the itunes definition files in another folder on the same external file server. It worked perfectly! All seemed well. Of course since making this change there have been many many updates to iTunes and the OS.
Recently, I was scanning through the folders of the external file server and noticed some media files that appeared in the iTunes application listing were missing in the physical iTunes media folder (folder A). After a little searching I found the media files were in the iTunes definitions folder (folder B). Initially I thought somehow I had changed the folder location under the iTunes advanced tab. I checked it stilled pointed to the ORIGINAL folder A location. Yet iTunes had for a while as it turns out had created a whole new media folder tree and was adding the media files to that media tree (folder B). This is the folder the original only contained the iTunes definitions.
Thinking I had made a mistake somewhere sometime ago, I copied all the media files to the proper folder (folder A) and reset the iTunes Media folder location to point to folder A. All was fine.
Today I added some new media to the iTunes library and once again, iTunes created a new media folder tree in folder B were only the iTunes definitions are supposed to be stored. So once again I moved the media files to the proper folder.
There is no question THIS IS A SOFTWARE BUG. It does NOT matter what folder location is specified in the Preferences->Advanced->itunes media location is specified, iTunes will either CHANGE the folder location to wherever the definitions files are located or begin putting the media files where the definitions files are located even though the iTunes media location is setting to a different folder.
when this started I do not know. I have been using itunes for a number of years and once I had my external file server set up never had reason to check it.
One might ask why put the media files in one location and the definition files in another location. That is because there was a time when iTunes for some reason would think it definition files were corrupted and start to do nasty things to the media library. Once I lost a number of songs it is then when I found a note in this forum that suggested putting the definitions in one folder and the media in another folder. It was great idea. Is there a work around of a fix for this bug?

    Some additional information.
When I click the apps tab in iTunes, some of the applications listed are actually songs (the songs are also shown in the music list and point to the proper location), when I click Get Info on some of the apps, it points to a song, and some apps that actually exist in the Mobile Apps folder are shown to located in a song folder. Bottom line the apps database is corrupted.
When I consolidated the music files I did not touch the mobile applications folder. As best I can tell all the movies and songs are fine (about 3000 items in total).
When I export the library it does not include the apps in the xml file. So deleting the iTunes DB and re-importing the .xml will not work.
To recap. All the songs and movies are in one folder (folder A). This is the folder listed in the Preferences->Advanced->Itunes media location. The apps folder is located in a different folder (folder B) where the iTunes definition files are located. How they got there I do not know.
How do I fix the apps tab and have the app icons (and physical applications) to point to the proper location? Also to remove the songs listed in the apps list without removing the song from the iTunes library.

  • Need help setting up dnla media server

I have gone to the forum to read what others are using to setup a media server on their intel iMac.  I have a 2010 i5 quad core 27" mac and just got a new Panasonic plasma DLNA TV with all of the internet apps.  I have Directv with the whole home network that was setup using my Qwest wireless modem/router.  Now, that I have a TV that can access my files on my computer I have tried the following apps, TwonkyMedia, XBMC, iSedora and none of them shows up when I select on my TV the DLNA icon, it says no media server found.
In my network pane I can see Location: Automatic, Status: Connected, Configure IPv4: Using DHCP, along with the IP Address and other listings.  Under the Security and Privacy pane I have Firewire: ON, and when I look at the advanced settings I can see that all of the applications that I tried shows that they have access for incoming connections.
I have file sharing off on everything except Bluetooth sharing.
Since I have my Directv HD receiver in the living room and the whole home networking, I have taken an ethernet cable and hooked it to a Belkin router to my ethernet connection on the receiver, and another one from the router to the TV.  I have internet access now on my new TV, and my Onkyo AV receiver, but when I try to use any of the media server applications, my TV says it can't find the DLNA server.
Is there a setting that I should access in the Network or File Sharing pane to allow these programs to work.  I am running Lion 10.7.2.
    Thanks,

    Hi Dansyacht,
Yes, I tried Medialink server.  One thing that concerns me is with apps like TwonkyMedia a web based server that any of my folders could be viewed by others or get personal information.  Whereas the media servers for my computer seem safer, is that a concern to worry about?
I just tried on Saturday before posting this the Medialink server, I can see my pictures, music, and video files listed in the window.  But when I go to my Panasonic tv and select dlan the window does not list any IP addresses.  I am wondering if I should reset my router, or change something in any of the panes listed above.  As I said above I can access the internet via my router on my tv, so I don't know what I am doing wrong with these applications, settings etc.
I just tried the Medialink app again and now in the window under devices I see "Unsupported Device, Generic Remote Device with a list of four IP address.  This is also happening with my new Panasonic Blu-ray player which is also hooked up to the Belkin router.
    Any other suggestions?
    Thanks,
    Daisymay

  • Time machine as a media server.

Can you use Time capsule for Time Machine back up, AND as a Media Server?
If I copy my iTunes Library to TC, then change the Music Folder location to TC in iTunes preferences, will Time Machine just back up over it? Over the iTunes library I mean.
On a slightly different subject, is it possible to erase older back-ups of Time Machine to save space?

Yes, but you cannot create a separate partition on the TC HDD. Just a separate folder, if that's okay for you.

No. Time Machine has its own separate folder. Note the TM will NOT backup the iTunes folder located on the TC HDD.
On a slightly different subject, is it possible to erase older back-ups of Time Machine to save space?
You can , but do so only via the Time Machine interface.

  • Mini as a Media Server

    http://www.imageno.com/zkikentocfg7pic.html
I want to hook up a Mini as a Media Server to the above A/V receiver. What do I need, and where do I make the connections ?

    OK,
You can connect the Mini directly to the iVision HD-7 via a DVI-D cable and the included mini-DVI to DVI adapter that came with the Mini.
Hopefully that DVI port is open, but if not, maybe you can shift something else to one of the Component inputs on the unit, as it seems to have many:
    YPBPR x 2 component video
    S-Video
    Video
    DVI-D (HDCP compatible)
    VGA (RGBHV, RGBS, RGsB)
So, again, there is no need for the Mini's DVI video connection to go through the Denon unit (I'm pretty sure). But, do put the Mini's Optical sound output through the Denon unit.
This arrangement may cause one added step of invoking the Mini as a video source via the Projector, instead of the Denon unit.
Hopefully the Projector isn't located overhead and behind you. And, the remote is IR, so hopefully it is easy to point to the Projector.
Please let us all hear how it goes.
    Peace to you,

  • Using a NAS as media server that can serve computeres and Apple TV directly

What is the best configuration (performance/price/robustness) to have one single scalable, “backupable” location to store videos and music that can act as a media server accessible by several mac and pc computers as well as several Apple TV within the same house (knowing that the Apple TV would access the location directly not going through a computer).

Not quite true. Apple TV can access NAS orginated stream if you share library. I have done this with GForce NAS. The problem is somwhere else. Sharing is limited to streaming music only at 128kbs. You can see all music on your NAS. NAS runs DAAP-MT server (linux based music streaming) for this which you likely need to enable manually (GForce NAS has this)
Another nasty limitation is that you cannot share stream movies from NAS.
That is the reason I have just bought Eee Box (PC with Win XP Home) and I hooked up number of USB drives with movies that I stream to Apple TV. This PC is very small and it takes very little power so, it can be placed in some corner (e.g. in kitchen when some appliances make noise anyway or in basement) and run 24x7. It will behave as NAS, but it will provide proper streaming of video (just install iTunes for PC on it). You do not need keyboard, mouse or monitor for this PC. I use Tight VNC to manage it remotely from one of my Mac computers... meaning Tight VNC service is run on Eee Box while Mac has built in VNC viewer that you can invoke from "Go to computer" window using following url:
    vnc://ipaddress_of_eeebox
(BTW Tight VNC does not need viewer on any mmachine as it has built-in web interface for screen management - you just need to use browser on port 5800)
To stream to Apple TV you need to enter those keys that are displayed by Apple TV. You do this via VNC.

  • Playlists on EA4500 Media Server

Does anybody know how to get playists to work on the EA4500 Media Server?
I have the Music folder share working with a Roku Soundbridge, so now would like to copy my iTunes playlists to this folder as well. I've tried creating a .m3u file in the Music folder but the Soundbridge doesn't recognize it. I put the following one line in this file, which just points to the file stored on the disk connected to the EA4500.
    /500GB_backup/Music/iTunes/iTunes Media/Music/Blondie/Best Of Blondie/05 Sunday Girl.m4a
    regards,
    js.

Was the music folder located on your external HD? What the media server can do for you is like to monitor the location of the media files. Lets say your media files is located in an external HDD and you want to use media server to play those files. Then you can specify the location of those media files and those files will appear on your media player(i.e vlc or wmc) under the media server name.

  • Using external HD connected to TC as media server

Just got my first Mac and I am trying to to get everything hooked up. I have the TC connected to AT&T U-verse via ethernet and I am using the TC as the router for my home network. My iMac is connected to the TC via ethernet. XP laptop, printer, iPad, and iTouch are connected wirelessly. I have three accounts on the iMac. I am using the TC for TM backups. Everything works fine. Currently, the iPhoto library is located in the primary account on the iMac. The iTunes library has been moved to the Shared folder. I need to be able to share iPhoto and iTunes libraries amongst all involved.
After reading many posts, I am just a little confused. I believe that the best way is to connect a separate external HD to the TC to function as a media server. I was thinking of using the Iomega Home Media Network 1TB HD for Mac. Can an external HD be connected to the TC via ethernet or does it have to be USB? The TC directions seem to specify USB. After that is done, what is the process for moving or copying the libraries to the HD so that everyone can access, view, edit or use the data easily? I'm a Mac guy now, so it should all work smoothly and easily, right:)

    Welcome to Apple's discussion groups.
    Either way works.
The TC directions seem to specify USB.
That's because the USB option is the only one that requires configuration of the Time Capsule.

Try the advice in this article for music:
    http://db.tidbits.com/article/11627
If you read the comments, you'll see that this approach doesn't work well for iPhoto.

  • What is a "media server"

We presently have several external HDs (500, 750 g and 1 TB in size). They have never been linked. I understand that a "media server" (arrangement?) would solve our problem of "overcrowding" re: photos, DVDs, music, except I am clueless as to what is involved.

Simplest way is to run your iphoto library on an external drive
Moving the iPhoto library is safe and simple - quit iPhoto and drag the iPhoto library intact as a single entity to the external drive - depress the option key and launch iPhoto using the "select library" option to point to the new location on the external drive - fully test it and then trash the old library on the internal drive (test one more time prior to emptying the trash)
And be sure that the External drive is formatted Mac OS extended (journaled) (iPhoto does not work with drives with other formats) and that it is always available prior to launching iPhoto
And backup soon and often - having your iPhoto library on an external drive is not a backup and if you are using Time Machine you need to check and be sure that TM is backing up your external drive

  • Archival services with Flash Media Server

I work for a broadcasting company and we do live telecast of
various events, mostly related to professional sports. We currently
have a Windows Media Encoder 9 setup with Windows Media Server,
etc. I have a custom written application that archives all of our
broadcasts. This was accomplished with the M$ media SDKs. Archival
means we record each one of our daily live feeds for review and
archival purposes (game footage for coaches, stuff like that).
We are currently looking at h.264 capable setups, or
something equivalent. We have been playing around with Adobe's
encoders, media server, and all that. We are impressed with the
quality. Switching to this right now has some logistical
complications, mostly related to an operational requirement based
on our current business model. Simply switching to h.264 overnight
isn't going to be possible; we will need to prepare.
So, with that in mind, I have a question relative to SDKs and
Flash. My current application (the archiver) can archive up to 120
events simultaneously on a single, reasonably fast machine on a
fast network. I have to be able to record at least 60 on a given
night, the 120 was discovered during testing and its faltering is
relative to network collisions and getting ethernet up to 40%
utilization more than not having enough CPU to process the streams.
I would need something similar for Adobe. I have the spec (at least
the public domain version) for the tunnelling protocol so reverse
engineering this isn't going to be a big deal. What I'm mosly
interested in is an SDK with functionality that allows me to record
a lot of streams in software for archival purposes. This SDK has to
be smart enough to deal with Disk I/O VERY intelligently because
clearly anything more than 8-12 realtime stream records to a disk
in a linear fashion is going to overload the hard drive.
Before anyone starts spouting off about DRM and piracy, we
are recording the broadcasts we own. This is for archival and this
archival process has to be automated (the app isn't JUST a
recorder, there's a whole process shielded from the operators of
this thing for defining stream locations, where to save the files,
and all that). I realize all this code that automates this process
for our company would still need to be written. What I'm interested
in specifically are readers and writers for flash streams,
especially relative to network reading and disk writing
(intelligent disk writing; I've written custom implementations of
MMS, HTTP, etc that mash the hard drive).
In a nutshell, is there an equivalent SDK for Adobe's
technology as the Windows Media Format SDK is for WMV files? This
is currently the only hurdle in implementing Adobe's h264
technology in lieu of our current setup (which is 100's of encoders
and locations at the current time, all over North America.
    Thank you for your time.

Take a look at On2's Flix SDK for Live. That uses the VP6 and
any day now, the h264 codec for FLV.
