Media Source Organizer Smart Playlists - won't link up to new hard drive

I recently tranferred all of my tracks to a new hard drive. I updated the PC Music library and it's working fine except for the Smart Playlists. They still refer to the old hardrive. How do I update the location for Smart Playlists?
Thx.

Hi,
If I remember correctly Smart Playlists & Playlists doesn't update itself when the physical music file is moved to another location. It's something like a shortcut that points to a list of songs. Can you create a new smart playlist to see if it is pointing to the correct location?

  • Itunes won't play library on new hard drive

I had to install new hard drive.  Moved all itunes files over including library.  Downloaded latest version of Itunes, but it won't play any of my music.

This is relevant portion of the support document with a bit of editing for clarity.
If iTunes is running, quit iTunes.
Using a Mac click the icon to open iTunes and immediately press and continue to hold down the Option key.
You should see the following screen:
If iTunes opens normally, close it and try again.
Once you've got that dialog you have two options. If your previous iTunes library database is stored on the external drive use Choose Library to browse to it and open it. If you only have the media folder on the drive then use the Create Library option to create a new iTunes library at /iTunes on the external, move the media folder to /iTunes/iTunes Media and then add it to your new empty library.

  • MacBook Pro won't start after installing new hard drive and me

I changed the hard drive and also upgraded the memory on a mid 2010 13 inch Mac and then used the disks that came with it to reinstall the OS that came on that disk. It worked fine and installed and then the screen came on to transfer from the time machine to the new hard drive so I said yes, and it seems to work fine but then when it finished it asked me for a password. I hadn't put a password on it so that was a surprise. I tried several things but it finally only had the option to restart and when I did that it seemed like it was starting with the apple symbol and the little gear but then it went to a Gray screen with the little gear, and then seems to freeze and then finally goes to the blue screen.  The disk to reinstall is still in the drive but I can't seem to get the install to start again. I've tried holding down the c key and starting, I've tried holding down the command plus the c key and nothing....just goes to the blue screen. Any ideas on how to fix this?
    Thanks

    Hi,
Before trying the following, make sure you can still read the 25 Character Product Activation key on your Windows COA label ( 5 blocks of 5 alpha/numeric sets ).
Assuming that this is just a problem with the Recovery process, there is a straight forward work around if you have ( or can borrow ) a retail Windows 7 installation disc that is exactly the same version as your OEM installation - ie if your notebook came with Windows 7 Home Premium 64bit this is the exact retail version you would need.
If you don't have access to a retail disc, you can create an installation disc yourself using another PC - just download the correct Disc Image from the link below and use an application such as ImgBurn to burn the ISO correctly to a blank DVD - a guide on using ImgBurn to write an ISO to a disc is Here.  These Images are clean and from a well-respected source, however there are only limited versions available.
    Windows-7 sp1-iso-official-32-bit-and-64-bit
Use the disc to perform the installation, enter the Windows activation key found on the COA Label when requested and when the installation has completed, use the 'Phone Method' detailed in the link below to activate the OS - this method supported by Microsoft and is popular with people who just want a clean installation of Windows 7 without the additional software load normally bundled with OEM installations.

I guess a virus crashed my hard drive so I bought a new one.  I installed the new drive and loaded the recovery disks that I also bought from HP.  Apparently Windows didn't load properly and it keeps telling me to RELOAD WINDOWS.  I've tried starting over from Disk 1 but it's not doing anything different to fix it.
I removed the new hard drive and reinstalled it but it's still doing the same thing.
What am I doing wrong and HOW DO I FIX IT?

Hi, and welcome to the forums.
The problem is, a case-sensitive disk cannot be backed-up to a case-ignorant one.
Case-sensitive disks are rare in OSX; where did you get it or why did you set it up that way? Does it have to be case-senstive? If not, do you still have the originals of the data you put on it?
If you're not sure what case-sensitive is, see the pink box in #5 of Time Machine - Frequently Asked Questions (or use the link in *User Tips* at the top of the +Time Machine+ forum).

  • Time Machine won't back up to new hard drive

I have been using Time Machine for over a year on a few different hard drives, most recently a Lacie Rugged (500 gb). It has almost always worked perfectly.
But now, I got a Lacie Rugged XL (1000 gb) and it has been working haphazardly. It worked at first, but every so often after its been plugged in for awhlie it just gives me errors, and then it won't even let me eject it. Sometimes the computer doesn't sense it properly either. I want to use it as my Time Machine backup disk but I'm not sure about these errors.
Any ideas? Why would it be doing this? I tried reformatting it in disk utility already. It works, just not consistently.
    Thanks.

Yes, entirely possible, especially if it's a non-powered hub and since your drive doesn't have a separate power supply. It can seem intermittent -- if your drive is contending for power with other devices, it may be fine most of the time, but occasionally two may want an extra bit of juice at the same instant (like to start up), and there may not be enough for a short period. A powered hub may be better, or re-arranging what's connected where might work, too.
Since it wasn't mounting at all, I simply unplugged the drive, and I got no complaints about removing a device incorrectly. Does that matter if its not mounted?
No, it's only a problem if OSX has it mounted; then it can't assure it gets closed-out properly so that everything is "in sync."
I keep clicking on Options in TM settings and checking the box that says "warn when old backups are deleted" -- but then the next time I look, it has been unchecked again. Why does it keep doing that? I want to leave that setting checked, but it won't let me.
The preference file is likely corrupted. Delete the file /Library/Preferences/com.apple.TimeMachine.plist (at the top level of your internal HD, not your home folder). Then you'll have to re-select your TM drive and re-enter any exclusions.

  • OS X won't install on my new hard drive

    Hi,
I recently decided to upgrade my hard drive, I chose a Hitachi 100GB hard drive and bought it off newegg. I installed it myself and it all went pretty smoothly but now I'm trying to install Panther and I'm having trouble.
I'm able to partition the drive using the Disk Utility, but on the "Select a Destination" step of the installer I get an exclaimation mark and it says,
"You cannot install Mac OS X on this volume. You cannot start up your computer using this volume."
Anybody know where to go from here?

    Hello
I have this powerbook g4 running Ubuntu Linux (or it was). Now I wanted to try the OS X so I checked if the firmware had to be updated (on apple.com), and if the current OS X would install on my powerbook. It seemed all was good to go..
But when I try to boot the install cd/dvd it loads the apple logo and the flashlooking 'loading-circle' just to make me feel like success , THEN it either crashed with a distorted apple logo or gives me this 'Corrupt-folder/Kernel panic' logo.
I tried almost everything to fix it, I've read half the internet info on this topic - all with no luck!
Remember I'm new to mac so I might have overlooked something, somewhere..
Can anyone please help me out - I want to have a look at the OS X

  • Creative media source organizer H

I have a Zen extra. I view the music I have on my harddri've using the creative media source organizer.
It shows the title, file size, type and date. I am trying to edit the properties to show more items, such as artist and album. Nothing works, I cant add these items. When I view this same music using windows explorer, the artist and album appear. Why wouldnt they show up in the Creative Media Organizer?

Azhat is referring to his PC hard disk. So, he is actually talking about MediaSource's My Computer. I cannot remember whether MediaSource v2 allows viewing of additional columns in My Computer; MediaSource v3 allows that.
Azhat, you can actually add the tracks from MediaSource's My Computer to MediaSource PC Music Library. You can then view additional track information by right-click to view more columns (as suggested by SSR).

  • I had to install a new hard drive because my old hard drives boot files became corrupted, and i want to get all of my music files off the old hard drive and regain all my play counts/ratings/playlists

    Greetings everyone
as the title says, ive had to install a new hard drive  and i want to transfer my old itunes library onto the new drive, maintaining all playlists/play counts/ratings etc, album artwork if possible. The old hard drive is installed as a slave drive and is completely acessible, but due to the boot files being corrupted i cannot use it as the main drive and therefore operate my old itunes. Also, my ipod no longer contains my music library as itunes synced without my permission and wiped it.
The only thing i have tried is copying all of my old music files from the old drive by selecting 'add folder to library' and then the old drive, then replacing the new itunes library.itl file with the one from my old itunes. This restores all my playlists and playcounts but when i try to play any of the songs it says that the files could not be found, and i dont fancy locating  8500 music files individually!
Thankyou for taking the time to read my post, any help will be greatly appreciated.

Ah, my reply was based on the assumption that you had a default installation of iTunes.
i.e you had all your music in the iTunes media folder inside your iTunes folder.
If your iTunes folder is so small compared to the amount of music you have, you must have a different arrangement.
    This complicates you situation considerably.
iTunes can cope with moving around as long as all the music is in the iTunes media folder, not not if it isn't.
Your first step should be to get iTunes working on the old drive. This will involve editing the xml library file so that the drive letter is correct and then rebuilding the library from the xml file.
Then you will need to consolidate your library which moves everything into the iTunes media fodler. After that you will be able to use my first suggestion.
    Step 1
Find the iTunes folder on the old drive and copy the two library files somewhere else so you can find them again. That's iTunes Library.itl and iTunes Library.xml.
Now open the copy of iTunes Library.xml with WordPad.
    Look for lines starting:
    Location
These contain the paths to tracks.
You will need to use a find/replace to change the drive letter so that it is correct.
Make sure that you include enough in the "find" so that you only change the right thing.
Maybe /c:/ and replace with /d:/ or whatever.
After that, tell iTunes to use the library on the old drive with a shift key start.
Hold down the shift key and start iTunes, keep holding the shift key until you are prompted to choose a library. Navigate to the iTunes folder on the old drive and choose iTunes Library.itl.
    Then use the method in the following article to rebuild your library;
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1451
Unfortunately the date added will be today for all tracks.
If iTunes works correctly after this, consolidate your library
    File>>Library>>Organize>>consolidate
This copies all tracks into to iTunes media folder and could create a problem if you do not have disk space so don't do it if you are unsure about free disk space.
Check that iTunes works OK and then use the first method.

  • Playlists Missing After Install New Hard Drive and Upgrade to Win 7

My computer needed a new hard drive and I upgraded from Win Vista Home Premium to Windows 7 Home Premium.
I am trying to get my Playlists back for my iTunes in my "Administrator" user account, after reinstalling iTunes and putting my music libraries back onto my computer.
(I had installed 32-bit Win7 OS myself, computer worked OK for about 1 day, then would not boot up; I took computer to shop, they said I needed new Hard Drive, and I gave them my new Win7 OS computer disks)
I am confused over whether I have 32-bit OS or 64-bit OS. They recommended installing 32-bit OS, I agreed, and believed that I had 32-bit OS installed; however, Computer / System Properties state "System type: 64-bit Operating System"
Prior to my installing Win7, I backed up the following onto my Western Digital "My Passport Essential Portable Hard Drive:"
("My Administrative Account"): Users / Owner / My Music
    and
("My User Account"): Users / Yank / My Music
My "Administrative" and "User" user accounts contain different songs in iTunes.
If helpful, I could describe what is in each of these 2 backed-up music folders.
To get started, I copied both my "Owner" and "Yank" user folders in the C: User folder; however now I have "Owner," "Yank," and "Yank.Owner-Toshiba" folders in the C: User folder. I think I did this by creating a new Yank user account by creating a new account, not by my copying a folder into C: User folder. The Owner folder has a picture of a lock on the folder icon.
Because I had trouble merging My Music folders in the Owner folder, and I was confused, I copied everything that was in the Owner folder into a new folder in the Owner folder, "NEW OWNER FOLDER." I also copied my Owner Music folder into several places in my Users / Owner folder.
I also ended up changing the "iTunes Media folder location" several times, using iTunes "Edit / Preferences / Advanced tab / change "iTunes Media folder location". When I chose "Reset," it shows "C:\Users\Owner\NEW OWNER FOLDER\Music\iTunes\iTunes Media"
I've also played around with "Edit / Preferences / Advanced tab / 'Keep iTunes Media folder organized' "
When I open my iTunes, I have no playlists.
However, when I went to my "Yank" user account and opened iTunes for the first time, the playlists associated with that account were visible.
How do I get my playlists back on my Administrative Account, which is my main song collection and had many, many playlists?
    Thank you.

    YAY!
I didn't try shift-start of iTunes, but I DID GET MY PLAYLISTS BACK BY FOLLOWING YOUR OTHER ADVICE:
I went to my external hard drive, went to my backup at Users / Owner / My Music / iTunes / and searched for library.itl
Four files with that name were found, with different dates.
I chose the most recent, dated just a few days before I made my backup to the external hard drive.
I copied it to my computer's hard drive into the following location:
    C:\Users\Owner\NEW OWNER FOLDER\Music\iTunes
which overwrote the file which was located there.
When I opened iTunes, ALL MY WONDERFUL PLAYLISTS WERE THERE!
THANK YOU SO MUCH FOR SOLVING THIS FOR ME!
CAN YOU IMAGINE HOW DISAPPOINTED I FELT WHEN I BELIEVED THAT I HAD LOST ALL OF THE PLAYLISTS WHICH I HAD CREATED OVER THE YEARS? Many of my playlists were composed of whole albums whose songs I had added to iTunes.
    THANK YOU AGAIN SO MUCH!

  • I have all my music on an external hard drive. I just transferred all my files to a new hard drive . How do I sync all my files with my itunes library without losing all my playlists etc and keep everything intact?

Launch iTunes with the Option key held down, click on Choose Library, and specify it. If the external drive doesn't contain the iTunes database files, create a new library there and import that music.
If the library contains any rented movies, they won't play on a different computer.

  • ITunes won't let me move files to new hard drive

Hey, all...I'm having a really major problem with my computer. I'm trying to move my iTunes library to a new hard drive. Currently, it's in a 1-terabyte Western Digital USB drive powered through the USB, and I'm trying to move it to a Seagate 1-terabyte drive. I currently have 535 gigabytes of media in my library and I have a MacBook with a 250-GB hard drive that I don't store any music on currently.
I move the library file over to the new USB hard drive, and I consolidate my library as it asks me to do. Then, when I go down to "Organize library", it prepares to copy the files to the new disk, then gives me the big red stop sign and tells me "The disk cannot be read from or written to." and that's that. The files work fine when I try to play them, so they're there, and presumably, not irretrievably damaged. They're just impossible to move.

A reply to an old problem, but I couldn't find this solution anywhere. I had the same problem when I moved my iTunes library to an external drive. As Apple recommends, I used File > Library > Organize Library > Consolidate Files to copy my music files from my overstuffed hard drive to the external drive. Copying went fine for a while, adding about two-thirds of my files to the new drive without incident. Then I got the big stop sign with the error message: "Copying files failed. The disk could not be read from or written to."
This turned out to have nothing to do with either the hard drive or the external disk. I had a bad file in my music library that was shutting down the consolidation process. Unfortunately the error message says nothing about which file may be the culprit. All I could think to do was to go back to my original library in iTunes and sort by Artist, select all cuts with artists beginning with A, right click and select "Consolidate Files". Then do the same with B artists, etc. Proceeding this way, files resumed copying but when I got to the "S" selections, the consolidate process failed again. Then I selected smaller and smaller batches until the problem file was identified. Removed it from my library and then Consolidate worked fine through the rest of the library. Problem solved.
I spent several days working through this; hope I can save someone else the time.

my 5th generation ipod won't sync anymore to my PowerMac G4.  It worked fine, but when I installed a new hard drive it won't work anymore.  I've re-installed iTunes, the latest version for Tiger, I've reset and restored my iPod.  The ipod shows up fine in the source banner and I can transfer files to it, however when I unplug the iPod the files are not there.

Maybe try to repair the iPod's HD using Disk Utility located in the Applications -> Utilities folder.  If that doesn't help, try a low level reformat of the drive using the same application.  Make sure you choose Mac OS X Extended (Journaled) as the file system format.

First, I guess I should ask just how you did the restore. Did you start up from your Install disc and use the +Restore System From Backup+ option in the Utilities menu, per #14 in [Time Machine - Frequently Asked Questions|http://web.me.com/pondini/Time_Machine/FAQ.html] (or use the link in *User Tips* at the top of this forum)? If not, do that.
    |
Otherwise, you want #E8 in [Time Machine - Troubleshooting|http://web.me.com/pondini/Time_Machine/Troubleshooting.html]. Here's the direct link: http://web.me.com/pondini/Time_Machine/E8.html Here's the gist of it:
Why did you get a new drive? If the old one failed, it's possible it corrupted your system as it was beginning to fail, and those changes got backed-up, so were brought back when you restored.
In that case, you might want to do the restore over, but select an earlier backup, from before the troubles started. Just be sure to use your +Snow Leopard+ install disc.
If you used a Leopard Install disc to restore a +Snow Leopard+ backup, that won't work. You may want to just do it over with the +Snow Leopard+ disc, or your best bet may be to just install OSX from your Snow Leopard Install disc, then download and install the 10.6.6 "combo" update from the link there.
