Mediashield BIOS hangs Detecting Array

Apologies for the long post...
My mobo (MSI P7N Diamond 780i SLI / 570i SLI)
The SATA drives are organised thus..
SATA 1 - OCZ Vertex - Windows 7 Home (64bit) Retail version
SATA 2 - Data HD
SATA 3 - Mirror A
SATA 4 - Mirror B
SATA 5 - Mirror A
SATA 6 - Mirror B
more system details below...
I had the system working reasonable well apart from a flip/flop array dead/alive problem that was really weird. See... https://forum-en.msi.com/index.php?topic=132584.0.
In an attempt to get to the bottom of this problem I decided to install a new dual boot copy of Win 7 on SATA 2. I did this to see if a new install of Windows without my applications showed the same problem.
On advice from the Win 7 forum, to ensure no corruption during the Win 7 install, I removed the SATA 3/4/5/6 cables from the drives. I then installed the new Win 7 and the latest nVidia raid driver on SATA 2.
Then I reconnected the SATA 3/4/5/6 cables.
Booted into the old Win 7 twice - the flip/flop problem still existed there. And then booted into the new Win 7. This showed the erring condition "array dead", but otherwise it worked ok. I restarted the new Win 7 expecting the flip/flop problem to show up, however, I never got into Windows.
The system hung during the MediaShield BIOS with detecting array.
The only way I could get it to boot, to get into the BIOS or Windows, was to remove all cables from SATA3/4/5/6.
If I set the RAID mode to IDE, or disable the drives from RAID mode in the BIOS, I can restart with the cables attached. In windows explorer two of the array drives show up - one from each array. The other two drives show up in the Disk Manager apparently without a file system on them :-(
I have had this problem before and I found the only way to fix it was to run Darik's Nuke & Boot on the drives. Repartitioning them and reformatting did not get rid of the hang condition. I never did understand what was left on the drive after repartitioning/formatting that upset MediaShield.
Does anyone have any advice on what I can do to narrow down to understand what is causing this to happen.
BTW - This hardware has been running just fine for ages on XP. I have been trying to get a stable Win 7 setup for weeks now.

  • Now RAID BIOS Hangs-Can't get into it!!

Folks - On a new build, the BIOS (v1.6) on my Neo4-F worked fine. I was trying to get Windows to not lose missing nt___ files. I kept deleting arrays and trying new array configs, reloading windows (yes, loading the RAID drivers with F6), but Windows still wouldn't load due to missing dll's.  Now when I set the RAID SATA settings in the BIOS, save & exit, on the reload it hangs at the Nvidia RAID ROM BIOS screen "Detecting array..." and won't go any further. So I have to power down, reset the CMOS to get the BIOS back.  If I go in and reset the SATA RAID drives, it'll do the same thing, otherwise if I don't set the RAID, it'll go on to load Windows as normal.  What happened and how can I get into the RAID BIOS again???  Thanks

Try having just one connected and boot . (do a cmos clear also ) .
You can also leave the drive powered , and just insert/remove the sata cable when system is running .
Just don't plug/unplug the HDs power connector while system is powered on.
Sometimes the raid hangs if the drive order has been reversed (the raid mirror is confused whats drive #1) .So you should also try switching the drives on the connected sata ports .

  • BIOS hang on IDE detection

For some reason, I am having random BIOS hangs SPECIFICALLY when the BIOS is scanning the 4th IDE Channel (sometimes as it scans to detect the Fourth IDE Master, sometimes when scanning for Fourth IDE Slave).  Once it begins the auto scan of this 4th channel, it just hangs there and freezes.  Also, I don't know why I'm not getting access to some other hard drive specs on the 4th channel, specifically these categories:  LBA Mode, Block Mode Fast Programmed I/O modes, 32 Bit Transfer Mode.  I'm at a loss at trying to figure this out.  Could someone please provide me with any insight into why this may be occuring??  I have posted below detailed specs on my Motherboard settings.  Thanks for your help, this is really baffling me because it appears to be random...

    SOLVED...SO FAR THANKS TO BEJON2000!
First off, thank you to ALL who offered your kind support and help.  I appreciate you taking your time to assist me.
bejon2000 - you were my saving grace!!!
Absolutely unbelievable to me, but thanks to you for sharing your experience with the 3-pin fan problem.  Based on that post, I again decided to dig into my power connections and cabling.  I admit, I thought your comment sounded like a long shot, but was so desperate and frustrated.  Guess what, I am ecstatic that I tried your suggestion.
After disconnecting the 3-pin fan off the same power connector also feeding my secondary hard drive, and reconnecting it to a different power cable with less load - here is my result.  I have experienced NOT A SINGLE HANG-UP now in 3 days.  I will continue to monitor this, but so far I think all is well.
My last thought:  THANK YOU again for sharing your experiences all.  I could not have done it without your insight, and I am grateful for forums such as these.  Bejon2000, you especially helped me out tremendously, thank you, thank you, thank you!!!

  • Sytem won't detect array

I've had the system set up and running fine as a standard non-RAID.  Set up RAID 0 and all worked OK.  Then (big mistake) tried to set up RAID0+1.  Now, when I enable RAID in BIOS, enable RAID on SATA3 and 4, save and close BIOS menu, system restarts, gets to "detecting array" and hangs - forever....  The only way out then is to turn the power off, clear CMOS and rest the BIOS to conventional - ie non-RAID.  Everythg then works fine again.  I've been thro this several times - always the same. I even sent to board back, returned as "fixed" but same problem. I tried another K8N Neo2 board - same problem.  So - its not the board, but if it's the drives or cables - why did it work on RAID0 and what's gone wrong since?  I assume I'm doing something wrong....
I've noted my deficient power supply issue, but all is otherwise well and again - if that's the problem why did it work the first time??
I've searched the forum but didn't find any problem quite like this.  MSI just tell me the board is fine.
    Thanks for reading

No - still get stuck in the same place - on start-up, DETECTING ARRAY. Then nothing happens.  I've waited about 20 minutes and still no go - surely that's long enough?
So, to reiterate, I had it running with RAID0.  Tried to set it (in error I now know) to RAID1+0 (but would still like it on RAID 1).  Ever since I cannot get into the RAID config utility and so am left with a "standard, nonRAID 2-drive system.  I have tried a very prolonged reset (>24 hours) NO GO.  , IN the on board devices section of the BIOS, I have enabled RAID, and then enable SATA3 and SATA4 only (not SATA1 or 2, and none of the IDE options).  Boot order is floppy, HDD, CDROM.  I have tried the ordinary power leads for the HDD rather than the SATA ones (getting desperate) NO GO. The CDROM is now on the secondary IDE channel - NO GO.  I tried a new mobo - NO GO  If I disconnect the drives, it takes a few minutes then flahes up (correctly I guess) "no drives detected".
I'm at a loss to know where to go next.  It guess it must be something to do with the drives/leads as replacing the mobo gave the same error.
I could flash the BIOS to 1.41 or later (currently 1.4) which would as I read the various posts on this forum upgrade the RAID bIOS to 4.66 (currrently 4.6).  After that I guess I could try new leads or even drives.  THe only other thing is the PSU, but then why did it work before - and no problems running a standard system since - anyone got any thoughts?
    Thanks
    Chris

If i disable raid, i still get the NV IDE BIOS screen, it just shows a message other than 'detecting array' with a flashing cursor and does exacly the same thing. It just wont get to the next stage.
I havent tried flashing the bios yet as my floppy seems to be dead. Could that help? Im not entirely sure if its the raid screen causing the problem anyway, it could be whatever is supposed to happen next, that just isnt.
    p.s. Clearing cmos didnt help.

Also downloaded some drivers and completed a Certificate of Authenticity for Microsoft Works 2003 Teacher Edition. Computer has been working well for about a week and now I'm starting to have problems. First freeze and restart was a screen with:

Difference is I have had this computer for years, have not installed anything new (neither hardware nor software), and have been getting this error EVERY DAY for the past 2 weeks when booting up/ powering on. Also, it never wakes up from sleep mode.

  • My v3753au (32bit win7) bios cannot detect internal dvdrom & hard to detect internal hdd?

    hi...
my v3753au is wonderfully running on 32 bit win7.  lately the bios cannot detect the internal dvdrom & kinda hard to detect (longer than usual) the internal hdd during startup.  i've tried with the other dvdrom & it's still the same.  however, the one that i used is still ok on other laptop.  fyi, i've tried with the original f.15 version as well as the latest f.28 version but both let me down.  when win7 runs, dvdrom doesn't appear either in win explorer or device manager.  i've also checked the registry for that filter thing but it isn't there.  any suggestions of what should i try next?
    tq for the help...

    > I couldn't reinstall/recover new system from CD cos Win7 couldn't detect any drive while installing.
Its no matter if the SATA mode is set to AHCI or compatible mode. The HDD should be recognized by BIOS even if the AHCI mode has been selected.
At the first BIOS page the HDD should be listed with the name and size.
If it isnt the case, it could be possible that your HDD controller is faulty.
What HDD did you purchase exactly? Is it a 2.5 SATA HDD?

  • Bios Hangs, Won't Boot!

Hi, I have a Neo2/P4 combo that has been working fine for about 3 weeks. This morning Windows XP crashed and now it won't boot back up. The bios hangs for like 5 minutes after checking the hard drives.
I've gone into the bios and reloaded the setup defaults. Same problem. Does this sound like a hardware problem? What can I do to help determine where the problem is?
I don't think it is a software problem because it never even makes it to the "starting windows" section.
I've pulled all cards out but my video, and removed all hard drives but my bootable one.
    Now what??

    Hi,
    Unplug hard drive.......
If you can boot up, then it is a disk problem
    This could be:
    1) Virus
    2) Hard Disk BAD sectors
    3) You updated a driver, that windows does not accept....

  • Random freezes with INSERT-HANG-DETECTED in system log

    Hi,
Since a few months I am experiencing random freezes on my early 2011 MacBook Pro 15". Sometimes they occur every few minutes and sometimes they can be away for hours. During the freeze the system is not responding and often a spinning beachball is shown. After the freeze the system resumes to work as normal.
In the system log (/var/log/system.log) I noticed the following messages which seem to have a timestamp corresponding to the freeze:
    WebProcess[151]: INSERT-HANG-DETECTED: Tx time:28.505937, # of Inserts: 1, # of bytes written: 4875, Did shrink: NO
Does anyone know what these messages mean?
It doesn't seem to be related to the application that is in use during the freeze. Most of the time I only use Mail, Safari, Calendar, Terminal and Preview. My system (10.6.8) is fully up-to-date. The Activity Monitor does not show exceptional CPU or Memory usage.
What could also be relevant is that the freezes started to appear a week after I replaced a defective Hitachi HDD with a Crucial M4 SDD.
Does anyone have had the same issues with this SSD?
Thanks in advance for any help.
    Maarten

This is an update to the question above.
I put in the original HDD and had the same issues. At one time it didn't even boot anymore. Then I sent in my MBP for repair. They first replaced the HDD with no success. Then they replaced the logic board and all issues dissapeared.

  • Sattelite P300 Bios Hangs

    Hello,
I have a sattelite P300 notebook with vista installed on it. I wanted to install XP PRO, looked for driver, was no prob.
Got blue screen when booting form XP-setup cd, this was due to the lack of AHCI drivers for the Harddisk.
So I accessed the BIOS and changed the SATA-operation mode to Compatibilty... (afterwards I discovered that this was also suggested on many forums).
But when rebooting I only get to see the BIOS POST en the screen saying press F2 for Setup (BIOS) of F12 for multi-boot devices or options (something like that).
Pressing F2 does not work. BIOS hangs..
So the problem is : Changed SATA operation mode to Compatibility mode, I need to change it back to AHCI, but I can no longer acces the BIOS.
I tried removing the HD, but no help.
Can I reset the BIOS to the default settings by CMOS jumper or so?
    Thanks in advance...
    Grtz!
    Goldie

    > Can I reset the BIOS to the default settings by CMOS jumper or so?
No, this cannot be done by a common user. The notebooks motherboards are simply different as the desktop PC motherboards and only the Toshiba authorized service technician could set it to the default flashing the BIOS again or using the jumper (if such jumper would be available).
But you should try to remove the battery (notebooks battery) and should disconnect the AC adaptor from the unit.
Then wait a little bit (1hour) and connect both parts again.
Then try to power up the notebook and to access the BIOS

  • Bios hangs

I have a K9N2 SLI Platinum motherboard with 5 harddisks. Four of these are connected to the onboard sata/raid. Two equal disks striping two unequal disks sata. The fifth disk is connected to the first IDE port. I run vista from the striping disks and three linux distro's from one of the sata disks. A grub bootloader is installed in the MBR of  this sata disk and the vista bootloader is installed in the MBR of the IDE disk.
As I have problems to start two of the three linux distro's with easy-bcd (easy bcd can access the grub bootloader but gives error's)  I prefer to start from grub on the sata disk, because this gives flawless access to all my operation systems.
However when I try to change the boot sequence in the bios (version 3.1) in most cases the bios hangs while saving. Only resetting by pushing the reset button on the MB brings it back with default settings.
As I lost my previous MSI motherboard (same type) when I tried to safe my personal BIOS profile (it hanged and could not be reset anymore) I am very reluctant to save my profile again or to upgrade the BIOS to version 3.2. Has anybody encountered similar problems with this MB or could it be caused by my other hardware?

    Hello Mr. Bas,
You are right about starting up an OS on a raid disk from a non-raid disk using grub, but I have the easy-bcd bootloader on an IDE disk. This one is found by grub and is capable of starting Vista on the striping raid disks. So with grub on a sata disk I can start-up all OS's. My experience is that Vista does not start up when I put grub on the mbr of the raid disks. Repair with the vista installation disk is only possible with work-arounds. First you need a complete system back-up. Then you have to do a fresh install  and only then you can recover the original vista from the back-up.
My question concerns bios problems. Do you implicitly connect this problem to the bootloader location?

It boots fine with a single stick in either slot. I tried flashing the attached beta bios via UEFI interface (choose the option with ME) and it updated. It still won't work if both slots are filled, works fine if either of dimm slots is filled with either stick from the kit.
ADD: I also tried putting whole RAM kit in my main machine and it works, so RAM isn't faulty.
Use a single RAM module, boot up, access the BIOS and be sure XMP is disabled.
Set the timings to 9-9-9-24, the voltage to 1.55-1.60V and the speed to 1333MHz.
Save the settings, shut down, insert the 2nd RAM module and see if it works.

  • HELP NEEDED!!! BIOS hangs, is my board dead?

It is probably my fault for trying to install a custom bios but I acknowledge the fact that I was stupid. At POST it will hang after Auto detection of my drives. According to the D-Bracket it hangs at Initializing Floppy Drive Controller but it never makes it to the Promise Bios. Is there anything I can do? Since I can't reflash I feel pretty stuck... Is my board hosed or is this something I can get repaired? Please, any suggestions are very welcome.
My board is a 845-Ultra AR by the way
