MediaSource - functionality & playli

Dear all
i have a Zen Touch 40Gb, a large music library and a number of gripes. i apologise in advance for the length of my post but i'd be really grateful for any advice you can send my way. i've searched through a large number of similar threads on this forum but, frankly, i've not seen a lot of answers (one poor chap was told his was a duplicate question but there was no link to the acti've thread so he's probably still searching for the truth!):-
. Saving/Exporting playlists - a lot of people seem to have this problem/complaint: is there really no way of saving a playlist from MediaSource to a .m3u file? (please note, in response to something i read in another post, i've tried synchronising playlists to my Zen Touch and using the separate explorer software but there is no usable playlist file there either that any of my other software will recognise). i'm trying hard not to sound negati've but this seems like a really basic functionality, particularly given that you can IMPORT .m3u playlists into MediaSource - why not export 'em too?!
2. Sorting playlists - has anyone found a workaround in order to sort playlists created in MediaSource? whether i'm creating a compilation, building a mix, creating a sub-group, avoiding duplication of tracks in an existing list or just trying to vary the play order of my tunes this would be a REALLY useful feature and it seems so simple to include in the software. you can sort in the main music library so why not in the playlist view?! again, i haven't been able to sort playlists within the Zen Touch explorer software either. is there any plan to introduce this functionality? are there any practical workarounds?
3. Reporting playlists - it would also be useful to generate a report of track listings either from playlists or selected songs. the report format could be something no more sexy than a tab-separated text file. these can be pasted into a word or excel document and sorted/searched/printed/saved to our hearts' content. in the absence of functions # & #2 above, this would at least give me some options when it comes to saving and sorting my inspired playlists. alternati'vely, if functions # & #2 were available in MediaSource i could probably li've without #3. but with all of them absent i can barely describe MediaSource as an "organiser" because it simply doesn't enable you to do any real organising (if you're as dull as me, obviously!)
4. File conversion - i've a number of .wma files in my library - mainly 92kb
ps.
whenever i try to convert them to mp3 (i have my reasons!!) the process fails. the error message says the "format conversion is not supported". some (but not all) of these files are downloads from Napster but I purchased the tracks and they should therefore be free to burn to cd or to sync with a portable device so i don't think they are protected. is there any reason why i can't achieve this file conversion?
5. Navigation - again a dull and seemingly minor gripe but therein lies my irritation: the "backward" and "forward" buttons in MediaSource do not function like similar buttons in any other file explorer software i have used (whether designed for music files or otherwise). you can't navigate between recently viewed artist or album folders (of which i, and most other users, have many hundreds) - only between the main library and the playlists. it's not the end of the world but this seems like such a basic feature in any other navigation software that i just don't see why MediaSource doesn't work the same way.
Ideally, i would like to use MediaSource to organise all my music but at the very least if there was an EXPORT function i would be able to transfer the extensi've data & playlists i've already generated into other more sophisticated software. i could then tweak them for use in other programs and also re-import amended playlists back into MediaSource. there is plenty of good quality free software out there and some excellent specialist software available for a very minimal outlay that can organise your mp3s and playlists in ways MediaSource users can only dream of (assuming, of course, that you dream about computer programs. i don't, i promise!) if i could export my playlists i could probably ignore MediaSource for anything other than sync-ing with my Zen Touch and use a stand-alone mp3 organiser to manage my music. i would happily settle for this but I'm surprised and disappointed that a company that is so big in the music industry leaves me in this position.
i know i'm moaning (a lot) but these issues seem so basic to me that i am really frustrated with the lack of features in MediaSource. i chose my Zen Touch deliberately over and above any other mp3 player on the market (including the i-pod) for technical reasons and i stand by that decision. however, as another user has commented in this forum, performance doesn't count for very much if there is no functionality or support.
please, if there is anyone out there with some tips or workarounds to my problems, or someone from Creative who can tell me when software updates will be released to cover these issues, or someone who can point me to an existing thread which received an answer, i may even be willing to part with cash (<EM>may</EM>...!)
Many thanks

    Hello,
is there a way to sort the items of a playlist in MediaSource? If i want to update a playlist (-> add/remove songs) it's very hard to know if a song is already in the playlist becuase the songs are ordered by time and not - for example - the band name. If I remember correct this ordering is also used in the player (for me it's a ZenTouch) that makes it even harder to find a certain song in the playlist because of you can't go to the band and then search there for a song. You have to search the entire list.
What I want to say is, that, when I click on the name of a column in the players media library it is orderd for that column but that doesn't work in a playlist. It annoyes me because of it happens that I add a song two times in a playlist or can't find it later on the player in the list. I reinstalled the MediaSource softwar recently so I don't think it is because of a installation failure.
It would be nice to have this function (especially so I wouldn't have to recreate a playlist from the bottom when I want to do some bigger changes).

  • Restoring MediaSource 3.30.21 MP3 encoding functionality in MediaSource 5, in Vi

I own the Zen Sleek Touch Photo. I have been for the last year or two been using MediaSource 3.30.2
I read from Creative that I could retain MP3 encoding functionality in MediaSource 5 as long as I
kept MediaSource 3.30.2 installed. This is fine all except for the problem that I can't successfully
install MediaSource 3.30.2 in Vista automatically. However, I am fully capable of manually installing
whichever piece of MediaSource 3.30.2 that flags MediaSource 5.
There are only a few directorys and places in the registry that MediaSource 3.30.2 installs to.
I'd like to know which file or registry string, or combination MediaSource 5 looks for, for the
    encoding functionality.

Well, I gave up trying to get mediasource5 to work, and let me encode mp3s. So I found it easier to hack mediasource 3 to install into vista 64bit. It works.
To enable MP3 encoding in MediaSource v5 you need to buy the Creative MP3 Audio Pack. http://buy.soundblaster.com/_creativ...FX685ASKJBLYY2 The pack includes the MP3 plug-in (composed of 2 files), so you are wasting your time trying to enable it in the Registry.

  • Mediasource - has the functionality chan

I have upgraded to firmware 2..0 on my Zen Touch but as Mediasource didn't recognize my player I have downloaded the latest Mediasource and the plug in needed so it recognizes the player but it seems that the functionality has changed a lot. You used to be able to view the tracks on the player by artist and album by selecting it on the left hand side but you can't do that any more. You can still do that when looking at the library but not the Zen.
Have I got a problem maybe or has it just changed functionality?

yeah there's a petition in this forum somewhere complaining about this very issue. it's called something like folder and tag browsing. i used to also like when i clicked on my playlists it would list them all and more importantly tell me how many songs were in each, not anymore i was trying to work with mediasource because it was what i was used to but gave in and switched to wmp 0 last week. it allows this functionality. there are drawbacks with it too but i suppose we cant have everything.

  • Mediasource 5 Functionality Changes...w

I have loved the MediaSource Player/Organizer ever since it was shipped with the first Audigy card I purchased some time ago. I believe it was version 3 back then...the layout, functionality and easy of use made it the best player I had ever used- I swore by the thing.
I have now been forced to upgrade to Mediasource version 5...and I'm really dissappointed- by 2 major things- Sorry if this has been covered before- I've been looking for an answer for ever.
. MP3 recording/conversion is now a "Pay for added plugin"...REALLY? Come on!!! It was included free in previous versions...OK fine. I can deal with this one.
    2. This is the big one. Why does double clicking a song clear out THE ENTIRE now playing list and set it as the only song in there?? In previous versions, it would just append the clicked song to the now playing queue...this is what made MediaSource great to begin with! The idea that the "Now Playing" list was a "temporary play list". Having to right-click and select 'add to now playing' is rediculous. I was trying to deal with having to do that......built a nice now playing list of ~50 songs....then I accidentally double-clicked another one, and BAM!! all gone. There has GOT to be a way around this.
I have looked though the options...nothing. I was really bored and quickly browsed through the registry...but to no avail. Please tell me I'm not the only one that HATES this?!?! Please tell me that there is some kind of work around that I'm just missing. Any help would be greatly appreciated.
    Thanks-
    Jake

When did the loss of MP3 functionality happen? I just used Mediasource 5.20.something earlier today and ripped two CDs as MP3s. I reinstalled it and now I can't rip as MP3s. Did it happen today?
Ugh. I was trying to rip Let It Be from the compilation as a WAV just now, and it was taking about ten minutes, andat 44% it just told me there was an error and stopped.

  • Creative MediaSource Playlist to Winamp Playl

Hello, I'm just wondering if it is possible to take a Creative MediaSource Organizer playlist and turn it into a playlist that can be used in Winamp. I don't really like using anything other than Winamp to play music, and I don't feel like recreating all of my playlists (I have a LOT of them) into playlists that can be read by Winamp. Thanks for the help and answers :-).

, I would suggest using the Zen Media Explorer for your device to make & edit playlists. It is on the install disc. MediaSource is not that good. Of all the Creative software the Zen Media Explorer for each player is one I do use often for this reason.

  • Creative Mediasource Organizer faswforwards playli

When I select content to play, PC Music Library, then select a playlist, my mediasource Organizer?will fastforward each song on the playlist. I can play individual songs from the library but not playlists.

Folders on the device are merely for your own convenience and organization. The device relies solely on ID TAGS on how it plays and displays the various tracks. You will need to get your tracks in order and edit the tags.

  • Exporting Creative MediaSource Playli

Why can one not export Media Source playlists to other Music Players or to the ROKU Soundbridge Digital Media Recei'ver? MediaSource uses the Microsoft Jet data base system to encode and store its playlists. That system is extensi'vely explained in the Microsoft Knowledge Base. Can someone tackle this problem?

Thanks, yes that worked. It's a nuisance that the updating doesn't occur automatically but it's much better than not working at all.

Can someone please tell me where the playlist files are stored after creation ( are they hidden ? ) & what file extension is used for these files?
When I create a playlist I never seem to be able to find the source file unlike Windows Media playlists which keep the name applied to them & have the .wpl extension.
    Thanks in advance.

I would love the answer to this question too.

  • MediaSource Recognition Problem? (Zen Vision:

OK, I had a Zen 20GB for the last year and I loved it to bits. Worked great, but just before Christmas it fell in some water and died . I replaced it with a 60GB Zen Vision:M and didn't mind too much because I had less than GB of space left and would have had to replace it soon anyway.
Now onto my question. With my Zen 20GB when I used Media Source (I think v.3 came with it but I can't remember) it would let me search my Zen and edit tracks in it. The search function was IMO fantastic, especially with a music collection as large as mine. Now when I connect my ZV:M it connects fine. I've transferred plenty of music without bother using Windows Media Player.
However, when I open Media Source (both v.3 and v.5) it doesn't give me any option to explore my Zen like it did when I had my 20GB. I can still explore it using the Zen Explorer, but since this doesn't let you edit the properties for several tracks at a time I find it very frustrating.
Also, if I chose to "Transfer Music", "Transfer Playlist" or "Sync Music" in Media Source I get the message "No Creative mp3 player is detected. Please connect your mp3 player and try again."
Now, I know it's connected since I can explore the contents fine in Zen Explorer and I can transfer to it using WMP. Is there something I haven't installed correctly that is stopping Media Source from recognising my player? It just seems strange since it seems to be the only application not working for it.
Thanks for the help (and sorry if this has been covered else where. I searched but couldn't find anything).

You must also download and install the corresponding MediaSource plugin for your MP3 player in order for MediaSource 5 to detect your MP3 player.

  • How do i realise the most basic functionality with my zen tou

I've been playing around with my zen touch for a couple of hours now and I have to admit I'm impressed. The zen has certainly opened my eyes and challenged my previous foolish preconceptions about portable mp3 players which should be open platform, plug-and-play, straightforward and easy to use, because my experience thus far has not been any of these.
In an attempt to stop wasting any more my time I was just wondering if someone could quickly tell me how exactly do I manage the files which are already on my touch? A couple of things I would like to do:
. view and music files on my zen touch from some interface on my computer
    2. copy music files from my zen touch back on to my computer
    3. delete all music files without manually having to go through each and every album
Now I've probably made another crass assumption that it is infact possible to actually do this, but here's to hoping.
Now, the manual says I can use the creative mediasource organizer to transfer music to my touch. And indeed, Creative MediaSource Player/Organizer 3.30.2 claims to be able to do just this (transfer music tracks to and from your Creative portable music player using Sync Manager and SmartFit*). My question is... how? I've run the organizer, it looks like yet another music library management tool, great except for the whole part about that mp3 player stuff. Is there a hidden setting somewhere only available to stonemasons that will let me access my mp3 player?
I've also installed the Creative NOMAD Explorer (Version 3.0.0). Now, at least this works - in the same way a person in a coma can be said to li've. When I open the 'music library' I get an empty explorer window to I can click and drag mp3 files into it and it copies them over. So, I guess I have some functionality, although it would be kind of nice to have some feedback about what files I have on there.
Now as it's not april fools I'm not quite ready to accept that zen touch as the great big joke it appears to be, so if somebody could provide some insight I would really be grateful.
edit: forgot to mention, running .0.03 firmware, and the model number on the back is DAP-HD004. Upgrading to the 2. firmware is unfortunatley not an option at the moment.Message Edited by adante on 02-24-20060:7 PM

Mosey: thank you for the information. Just out of curiousity, was I just not paying attention and was this made known somewhere? Or do creative just expect you to potter around endlessly installing software in the hopes that you might randomly stumble across the right configuration?
Perhaps I am just crazy for assuming that if the latest firmware does not have a superseded message, it is still acti've and valid.
Anyway, I'm happy to report that the situation has been resolved mostly to my satisfaction. I was able to fob off my zen touch to some other sod, and actually make a profit from it, no less! This was quite a pleasant surprise because I usually dispose of fecal matter by flushing it down the toilet (but then, I don't have to pay for it either).
I have since purchased a noname mp3 player which, while having some pretty severe firmware, provides some great additional functionality which I have to admit I really like over the touch. Primarily, this was being able to copy mp3s to and from it* and hence use it as an mp3 player! I know this concept is a little radical, but I really think creative should look into it because it would really add some value to their current line of paperweights and doorsto
    ps.
So thanks creative for that hilarious little experience. I have to admit, you guys certainly do manage to distinguish yourself from the field and push the limits of mp3 player technology. Where I used to think of a nai'vely spectrum of good to bad, I have since extended this from the good, to the bad, to the creative.
    * This alone is a great feature I was never able to realise with my touch, and made even better by the fact I didn't have to install all sorts of half-baked software to achieve it!

  • How to delete Zen Vision:M empty playlis

I've run into this problem twice now in the less than one week I've owned my Zen Vision:M. I create a playlist either through Winamp 5.2's Portable Media Player plugin (which is simple, but is OK for managing music) or through the Creative MediaSource software. In the second case, I imported an existing playlist, then created a new playist on my ZVM, then copied the songs from the old playlist to the new playlist. That is the process that I read about someone else using in these forums.
    Problems:
() Songs appear to be duplicated in the process and it takes forever for the playlist to be finalized. That's been mentioned enough in these forums and isn't the issue at hand.
    (2) Multiple playlists with the same name appear on the ZVM with all (or nearly all) of them empty. To be honest, I don't know if they are all empty because it appears to have made one playlist per song in copied over and I don't have the patience to look through all 40 of them. Only one playlist with this name appears when viewing via Creative MediaSource or any other software I've tried.
    (3) I deleted the playlist via Creative MediaSource, hoping to clean up the problem. The result was that the single valid playlist disappeared, but the empty ones remained and are only visible on the ZVM itself. I've tried deleting them one by one on the ZVM, but when I leave the playlists, then re-enter the menu they are all magically there again.
The first time I solved this by returning my player to the store and getting a replacement, but this appears to be an "undocumented feature". Anyone familiar with this or know how I can clean out the invalid playlists? Thanks!

Well, I contacted Creative's support staff today. Summary: there is nothing to do except reformat my ZVM and start over from scratch. Not exactly a solution, but that's the state of things as of today. If anyone else runs into this problem, please contact Creative so as to give them incenti've to fix this bug as soon as possible. Of course, I could also state the obvious that the best solution is to support standard playlist functions or importing of standard playlists. THAT would make LOTS of people happy!
    That's all folks.
[EDIT] I found a fix that didn't involve formatting the dri've. Support sent me a link (http://us.creative.com/support/kb/article.asp?l=3&sid=4794) to walk me through the formatting process and I decided to try "Clean up" first. It messed with a couple of my settings, but cleaned off the nasty empty playlists and meant I didn't have to transfer all my music again. Whew!Message Edited by digiman on 07-06-2006 09:27 AM

  • MediaSource Directory Na

Hi, my first post here, so hope it will keep you interested.
My issue is that a certain podcast (chinesepod.com), has both English and Simplified Chinese characters in the directory names.
This causes MediaSource to put a little flat open hand icon in place of the directory folder icon, and it refuses to both display the contents - the mp3 files which have been downloaded, and to upload them to my ZEN Xtra.
The files are all there, and if I copy them into another directory, obviously without the Chinese characters in the name, everything works fine.
Copying the files manually would be tedious, and I would prefer not to do it, if I can get away with it.
Is there a fix that could be applied to Creative MediaSource that will fix this problem?
Please, post if you're unsure what I mean. Essentially, the files will only download to a directory called, for instance ". .. ChinesePod Newbie ?" or ". .. ChinesePod Elementary ?" etc... and I have to copy them to ". .. ChinesePod Newbie", etc.
Normally, there isn't any problem at all. All other downloads go to completely English named directories, it is only this range of downloads - but it would be nice to have the functionality included in Creative MediaSource.
If you can't see the Chinese characters, don't worry - in MediaSource they appear as question marks (?) - but my PC is set up to be able to display Chinese characters under every other circumstance.
    Cheers,

    RESOLVED
I have found the fix for this, just in case anyone else needs it.
In Control Panel/Regional and Language Options I had already installed East Asian Languages and the Chinese PRC service. BUT what I had not done is to Select Chinese (PRC) as the language to match the language version of the non-Unicode programs I want to use. This is to be found on the Advanced Tab of the Regional and Language Options panel.
    Everything is hunky dory now.

  • Cannot play audio CD with Creative MediaSource Pla

    Hi All,
I recently installed an Audigy 2 ZS Platinum soundcard and the Creative MediaSource Player software. I also purchased Creative 5. Analog speakers. Have everything configured pretty well now and really enjoying the enhanced sounds!
My problem is that I cannot play audio CDs using the MediaSource Player. I can see my DVD Player and CD Player in the MediaSource Player 'Source' column and a list of all the tracks on the CD. (no track info, just track numbers and length)
When I double-click on a track it cycles through all the tracks and then places an 'X' next to each one in the 'Now Playing' list window. If I have other music files from my harddri've available, it will start playing one of them.
I've tried different CDs with the same results.
I can use both the DVD and CD dri'ves to play an audio CD if I use any other player (Winamp, Windows Media Player, etc.) and use both dri'ves everyday for loading software and reading files. It will also read the demo DVD Audio disk that came with the card using the DVD-Audio player they provide so I'm pretty sure there's nothing wrong with the hardware or drivers.
I've read all the info that came with the card and on the Creative Web site and have been through every configuration screen multiple times but haven't found a switch that turns this feature on.
Would like to get this working so I can standardize on one player that allows me to use all the advanced features of my new card.
Thanks in advance for any light you can shed on this.

A good way to see what kinds of things you might need for something like vlc is to look at the optional dependencies for the package.  So if you do pacman -Qi vlc if the package is installed on your system already, or pacman -Si vlc if not yet installed, you can see in the output what kinds of optional dependencies there are.  Typically there is a short description of the extra functionality that the optional dependency can provide as well.
So in the case of vlc (and the libcdio optional dep) I get:
    $ pacman -Qi vlc

Optional Deps  : avahi: for service discovery using bonjour protocol [installed]
                     <SNIP SOME MORE>

libcaca: for colored ASCII art video output [installed]

I installed MS5 using auto update but it did not uninstall the old media source. After the install of MS5 I was having a conflict with another program that is in my startup folder causing it to not start. So I uninstalled media source 3 thru add and remove programs in control panel and it seems to have fixed the conflict with the program in the startup folder. Media Source 5 works fine but when I check the Creative website for updates it wants me to install all the Media Source 3 programs. Is this necessary or a glitch at Creative?
It seems that MediaSource 3 and MediaSource 5 are designed to coexist with each other. I believe that MediaSource 3 may still be needed for some (old) products. That may be the reason why installing MediaSource 5 does not automatically uninstall MediaSource 3.
