Mediatek (Ralink) wireless adapter (USB) AWUS052NH disconnects (HP Probook 450G1)

My Long Range USB wireless adapter (Alfa, Ralink AWUS052NH) continuously disconnects. Every 15 seconds a beep comes, the adapter can be seen in the networkscreen an then disappears. Also the Mediatek Wireless Utility does not work.I downloaded latest drivers but no effect. How can this be solved?

Yes. HP locks down the BIOS and if you install anything other than very specific wifi adapters the system will not POST. You are correct in thinking the Ralink is not the strongest option. Your best bet is Atheros or Intel in that order. Broadcom cards are a bit hard to configure with Linux but it can be done. Here is the entire list of wifi cards with part numbers that you can use:

  • How to add a 2nd wireless adapter (usb) to a MacBook Pro?

I am in an area with a bad signal for wireless, and my airport won't pick up the signal reliably. I have purchased a hama WLAN USB-Stick with flexible antenna, so I can move it around for the best signal. It has drivers for OS X 10.5. However, the installation directions are for older versions of Mac OS X - not Leopard.
System Profiler detects the adapter, and I have installed the drivers from hama. Now, the instructions say to click on the Apple and select Environment in order to add a new ethernet port (en2, for example) - but, there is no 'Environment' selection under the Apple menu in Leopard.
So, how do I add this new port???

I have gotten it to work, but first, for Tim, the manual can be found here (pick the language of your choice) -
    http://www.hama.at/portal/searchSelectedProductNO/type*201/action*1026/searchMode*1/qwlan+usb-stick
In searching online, I found a "patch" at:
    http://www.hama.at/portal/searchSelectedProductNO/type*201/action*1026/searchMode*1/qwlan+usb-stick
The instructions on that page include the following text:
"This is USB CDC for g_ether Linux devices on OS X 10.5 ("Leopard"), patched by Angel Roman of Bug Labs. It has been tested to run on OS X 10.5.2 on Intel Macs.
This patch exists in order to provided IP-over-USB capabilities to OS X, allowing you to access various embedded Linux gadget-type devices ... connected to your Mac.."
That sounded like what I needed, so I went ahead and installed their patch - and, it worked. I unplugged the hama device from the USB port, installed the patch, and restarted my machine. Once everything was up, I plugged in the device - and up came the message that a new network device had been detected. Everything worked great from there on, and I'm connected to the hama device now in order to respond to Tim's message! It also shows up in the Network Utility as en2, just as it should.

  • HP ProBook 450 G0 - wireless adapter spare brands

    Hello, community,
i have a question about my options for wireless adapter spares for my HP ProBook 450 G0 laptop.
Right now the laptop i own has
root@linux:~# lspci | grep "Network controller"
03:00.0 Network controller: Ralink corp. Device 3290
and i can't say that i'm fully satisfied with the quality of wifi adapter sensitivity I do not know if that's me being out of luck or this is normal and expected behaviour for this model, but the fact is i have two options now - either buy an external usb adapter or replace the internal adapter with another one.
while the options for an external ubs adapter are quite clear, the spares for an internal card are not so much. So basically here comes the question: what are my options? I've heard there are adapters, made by atheros, broadcom and intel, but not sure if these are compatible with particularly my model of laptop. And if they are, what would be the part numbers.
    Thanks.
    This question was solved.

  • My usb wireless adapter keeps disconnecting

So, I just bought this TP-Link TL-WMN721N 150mbps wireless adapter, and it has this issue. It keeps disconnecting, all the time, i've downloaded the latest drivers and i'm pretty sure it's not a malware problem, also tried connecting to different usb ports.
    Any guesses?

    Hi,
You can also temporarily turn off your anti-virus software, since some anti-virus might not recognize the new component installed.
I noticed that you've had the latest driver, did you get the driver by manually viewing the device manufacture website to look for the latest version?
This issue can also be caused by incompatibility, Please make sure the usb wireless adapter is compatible with your Windows version.
Please also reinstall the usb controllers as a test
First, please disconnect all USB devices and then perform the following steps:
    1)    In Device Manager, double click to expand "Universal Serial Bus controllers", right click on the Host Controller, click "Uninstall" and click "OK".
    2)    Repeat the step 2 to uninstall all items under "Universal Serial Bus controllers".
Then, restart your computer and your windws will reinstall all USB controllers automatically.

  • Connecting nano disconnects wireless adapter

As soon as I plug my iPod nano into one of the front USB ports on my Shuttle XPC (Windows XP Pro SP2), the wireless network adapter (LinkSys WUSB54GP) disconnects from the wireless network. The LinkSys is plugged into one of the rear USB sockets.
The adapter does not come back to life if the iPod is disconnected. However, it does come back to life - even with the iPod still connected - if I grovel round the back of the PC, pull the LinkSys adapter out and plug it back in again. So I have a sort of workaround, but it is not exactly convenient.
I downloaded and installed the latest iPod Updater and iTunes today (before that, the iPod wasn't even recognised most of the time, and sometimes froze the PC). No such problems with any other USB devices (memory sticks, cameras etc.) I have tried making the LinkSys adapter be managed by Windows vs. the LinkSys widget, but no difference. When it dies, it is still shown as working in Windows Device Mangler, but it just can't see any wireless networks.
The Windows XP install is recent, with all Windows Updates applied and recent device drivers. I have Norton Internet Security 2006 running, but have tried disabling it etc.
Anyone seen and/or managed to resolve anything similar?

I am also experiencing the same problem. I have an Ipod Video, and every time I connect it, the wireless internet goes down. My computer is not directly connected to the router, but it is connected wirelessly. I also can't just unplug and plug my wireless card back in (it is a usb one). I have to restart my computer without my ipod plugged in for it to work.
I have installed all of the Windows Updates, and all of the usb ports work just fine for other devices. I have also installed ipod update, but my ipod video is still disconnecting the internet. If you have gotten a solution for this problem, please email me at [email protected]

  • Can I use a USB wireless adapter with my iMac G4 Flat Panel (it has no Airport card).

I have just salvaged an iMac G4 15-inch Flat Panel from the skip and now have it running Mac OS X Tiger 10,4. It has a 700mhz cpu, 80Gb hard drive and 512mb of Ram. No airport card is fitted so I was wondering if a USB wireless adapter could be used instead. I have a Belkin F5D8055ea USB wireless adapter fitted and the system recognises the device, this is as far as I have got as I am a complete novice on Apple/Mac machines. Anyone any ideas please?

If the device is recognised, see if you can located your wi-fi network using Airport Utility.

  • How to use a high power wireless-n usb adapter

I recently purchased a kinamax high power wireless-n USB 2.0 adapter to boost my wifi signal. The data range is 802.11n. The only problem is that I can't use the adaptor. The box says that the supported OS is MAC OS X. But when I connect the adapter nothing happens. There is not even sign that the USB adapter is connected. Can anyone help me?

    Hi Kelvin,
I understand that you want to control pins on your serial port using LabVIEW. Since you are using Windows XP, only LabVIEW version 7.0 will be able to control the pins. The pins can be controlled by modifying the values of the access registers that windows associates with each pin. If you are using LabVIEW 7.0, then the VI's located on the Funtions >> Advanced >> Port I/O palette should help you assign values to the proper pins.

  • Issues with usb wireless adapter

    Hi
    Please excuse my ignorance.
I have an imac (about 2 years old) with a built in airport card. I am trying to use a usb wireless adapter. It has a realtek rtl8187. we have a wifi network here that works with my pc using this adapter but i cant get it to work on the mac. You have to sling the adapter on the window sill but it picks it up fine.
I have installed the supplied software (obviously the mac one!) and it installs the software and driver. After i have restarted, and plug the thing in, it tells me to turn on my wlan card on the supplied software?? It shows up in the listing on network settings as ethernet adapter ((null)). I cannot find any setting to turn on my wireless card, i thought that was airport?
The airport picks up the network but the signal is too weak to connect, hence the adapter with a bit more guts....
I have this beautiful mac, colecting dust and am having to use a pc!
If i connect the usb adapter without installing the software, it constantly has a box popping up in network settings saying that an external device has changed settings! it doesnt stop doing it, until you delete the location...
Can anyone help? I may be being thick and dont have a wlan card or something or airport will not allow me to use this thing. I only just started getting into macs when i moved to spain, where it has sat colecting dust for 3 months.
    I would appreciate any advice.
    Thanks
    Richard

Cisco makes a router that is good for two-story homes.  I have used it for several years.  My router / hotspot is on the second floor and my Blu-ray player and laptop are on the first floor.  Both work extremely well with the router.  They also make a USB, AM10, that works very nicely with a desktop without a wireless card.
I have had a few problems with both, but have always been helped successfully by Cisco Customer Service.  They are very good.

  • Upgrade to kernel 2.6.26.2-1 and my ralink-based wireless adapter

The latest upgrades (kernel26, rt2500, etc.) are causing me major problems with my wireless adapter.  It's a junky Belkin model which uses the rt73usb driver (part of the rt2500 package, I believe).  Anyway, after the upgrade, if/iwconfig returns no wlan0 interface.  Modprobing the rt73usb driver doesn't help.  I also see a blur of ugly looking text at bootup that seems to relate to my USB hub - but that's probably an unrelated issue.
    Is anyone else having problems?
EDIT: This should probably be moved to Kernel & Hardware Issues.  I'm acting stupid today...

I've had issues with rt73usb after upgrading to 2.6.26, too. The kernel even oopsed when plugging the adapter in (you might refer to it by writing "a blur of ugly looking text" ).

  • Please Help - CISCO VPN client disconnecting over wireless adapter

    Hi,
I connect to my work network when at home using the CISCO VPN client. I have a wireless connection at home. My vpn conection had no problem until my laptop once dropped hitting the wireless card reader side on the floor. since then, my vpn disconnects after some time. And this also disconnects my wireless connection at home. When I am not connected to work through th eVPN, we have no problems with my wireless connection. But, when I need to work from home, my vpn keeps getting disconnected and throws me off my wireless conenction too everytime. Can someone please tell me how to check if anything is wrong with the laptop?

Ok lets see if we can clear somethings up.
Using wireless and VPN before the "Drop" was ok?
Using Wireless and no VPN after the "Drop" is fine?
Using Wireless and VPN after the "Drop" causes the wireless adapter to disconnect?
If this is correct probally the best thing to do is to remove the cisco VPN software and reinstall it.
It can't be anything to do with the "Drop" as using normal wireless is working fine you say.
and the Cisco VPN Adapter is Virtual.
Let me know how you get on.

  • Can't find Network using a Linksys WUSB54G Wireless-G USB Adapter with a linksys WRT150N router????

Hello.....I just recently bought a linksys WRT150N router and am having problems connecting a computer that uses a Linksys WUSB54G Wireless-G USB Adapter. This computer's operating system is windows 2000 and it cannot find the network I setup.....Even when I double checked that the router was in mixed mode.....Can anybody help?

I am having a similar problem with my WUSB54GC adapter connecting to my WRT54G router 100 feet away with only a single stud wall in between.  Sometimes the computer connects automatically and sometimes I have to restart windows or use the repair connection wizard to get the computer to connect.  Using Windows XP and Mixed infrastructure network with SSID broadcasting disabled.

  • Unable to Install Wireless Adapter (NIC or a USB) to Pavillion p6340a Win 7 Home Prem

I removed a working TP-Link network card from a Pavillion a1300a XP Home  PC to put in my Pavillion p6340a Win 7 (64bit) Home Prem PC.
Downloaded and installed current drivers from TP-Link.
All installed well and the adaptor can be seen in under "Change Adapter Settings" in Network & Sharing Centre and shows as working properly under Device Manager  but it is not recognised as a Network within Network & Sharing Centre.
Under "Manage Wireless Networks"" nothing is shown, if I then click Ädd" then Manually Create Network Profile"" I then get a very informative error message ""an unexpected error occurred".
Suspecting a problem with the NIC I deinstalled it and its drivers and tried to install a USB wireless adapter with the exact same outcome and error message. It appears there must be some OS problem or something stopping the wireless network from functioning. Both the NIC and USB adapter work fine when installed on the old Pavillion a1300a XP Home PC. Both NIC and the USB adapter have current Win7 drivers.
Any ideas as it is driving me mad. A simple 5 minute task on any other PC has turned into many.many hours with no solution.
    This question was solved.
    View Solution.

After many hours uninstalling re installing & trying everything under the sun in many forums, I finally found a solution. Despite trying with firewall disabled at different times the final fix was
uninstall the NIC and USB drivers and devices.
Next uninstall the AntiVirus (in this case AVG Internet Security)
    reinstall the NIC and drivers
    Reinstall AntiVirus
Tried the USB adapter as well whilst the antivirus was uninstalled and it installed no with problems as well.
    All working fine.

  • 5 GHz Wireless N Adapter (USB 2.0)?

I purchased an Airport Extreme mainly for the dual-band technology (2.4 GHz or 5 GHz). We have Logitech speakers, phones, and Microwaves that interfere with the 2.4 ghz internet so much that it's almost impossible to use.
For Windows, can anyone reccomend a 5 GHz N wireless adapter? Preferably USB 2.0. (Just for reference, the options from the Airport are 2.4 ghz b/g/n, 2.4 ghz n, 5 ghz a, 5 ghz n.)
      Windows Vista

I think that if you are having problems with the 2.4 GHz, you'll find that it will even be worse at the 5 GHz option. The best deal is move the phones, try other channels, etc.

    Hi everyone,
I also encountered the same problem or even worst.
    Here are the details below.
    System:
Intel S875WP1-E entry serverboard latest bios P14.
    Intel Pentium4 3.06 Ghz
    2x 256MB DDR
    2x 120GB Seagate SATA HDD - RAID1
    1x 40X CDROM
    1x Generic floppy
Windows XP Professional + SP1 + security patch.
    1x UB11B Wireless 11b USB Adapter (ms 6823).
    Drivers tried:
Original drivers came with the CD.
    Latest from MSI support site.
As long as the UB11B is physically connected to the server and regardless it is hook up to an AP or not, the system will just go to BSOD without any reason. And this will happen just within 15 minutes
When server crashes, I always need to rebuild my array. I also encountered the same error as the NDIS.sys but not all the time. And sometimes other xxxxxx.sys files.
Alternatively, I used Intel PRO/Wireless 2011B LAN USB device. And it was working perfectly.
Can anyone from MSI support provide some inputs.  We really can not use this MSI UB11B on this server.
Maybe there's any beta driver or firmware that we can use for this BSOD problem. We will be glad to try it.
    Thanks,
    George

  • Satellite Z830 - Wireless adapter drop out/conflict with USB

My Satellite Z830 has a wierd problem. The wireless connectivity works well until I plug a usb flashdrive into the usb 3 port on the side. The wireless then drops out after a period and from then on it cant find any wireless connections available. It effectively kills the wireless adapter, or at least makes it less reliable.
You have to reboot to get the connection back. I've tried with a few different usb storage devices with the same outcome. Both the wireless connection and the usb drive work fine, but not at the same time. This happens regardless of whether using the battery or when plugged in. I checked the power settings to ensure there wasnt some problem there. Everything is just on factory install/settings generally, so I cant imagine it is anything I've changed.
I'm at work, but I'll see if I have the same problem with the usb sockets at the back, and/or with powered usb hard disk, when i get home. This is really annoying, as you cant use the net and leave a usb disk in without risking a drop out. I havent checked messing around with USB root hub settings or IRC issues as this seems unlikely. Any thoughts or is the a "give it back to Toshiba" issue - I'd rather not have the down time. It took me quite a while to work out this was the problem.
The wireless connection itself is very strong where the ultrabook is being used, so isnt a signal strength issue.

I used inSSIDer Office 5 day trial (http://www.metageek.net/support/downloads/)
too identify the same problem with my Z830.
    _The results are really astonishing:_
the signal strength measured in dBm increases by > 100 times when the corded mouse is unplugged from the from the side USB port.
(plugging it into any of the USB ports in the back has no impact on the signal strength.)
In my case it jumped from -68 dBm to -41 dBm,: the -27 dBm difference means a 22.4 times improvement in signal strength (from about 100 pW to 2,240 pW).
See wikipedia for signal strength calculations: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/DBm
I tested to plug in an external hard disk into the side USB and it had the same -27 dBm effect on the signal strength.
In other words the wifi signal strength jumps from poor to excellent when the side USB is not used.
Toshiba must look into this significant hardware design fault and in the interim, as the very least, must advise their customers against using the side USB port when on a wireless network.
