Medium Error on DVD-R

I have a newer IBook G4 with a superdrive, I just got some Maxell DVD-R's and only about one out of three discs seems to work in the drive, the drive always recognizes them as DVD-R's but when I try to write them I get medium errors. My superdrive writes memorex dvd-rw's everytime. Is this as simple as having bad dvd-r's or is my superdrive acting up?
thanks

I had the same problem this weekend. I picked up a stack of Maxell 8x DVD-R's and had three fail before I gave up. The last one even caused a kernal panic (the first I've had since installing Tiger, I think). I have a G4 with the PIONEER DVD-RW DVR-104.
Like you, I've had no trouble with the Memorex media. So, I'll stick to that.

  • MEDIUM ERROR Burning a DVD-R

Hi, I'm trying to burn a DVD for several times with Roxio Toast Titanium 6.
I used to do it like this always but now it seems impossible.
I'm trying to record a DATA DVD and this is the error I get:
    The drive reported and error:
    Sense Key = MEDIUM ERROR
    Sense Code = 0x73, 0x03
    My DVD´s are DVD-R 4.7gb.
    The recorder is a Matshita DVD-R UJ-816.
Can you help me find the problem for this?

    First welcome to the discussions.
With your drive and optical burner it will only qaccept DVD-R Media. There is such a wide range of problems with cheaper Media I suggest you find Maxell 8X DVD-R media it comes in a pack of 3 Read the back panel on it and if it says it burns at 1X 2X 4X 8X then you have the right one.
I have had 100% burn rate with this media in my Computer with the same drive. There seems to be a big difference in the different types and manufactures of media.

    John,
Agree it seems odd that you just started getting the errors with media that has previously worked. I'd try a different brand to isolate if it's a DVD media problem or something with your PB.
FWIW, we only use TDK (have used -R and +R) and have not had media errors. Circuit City carries them at around $8 per pack of 25. If you search around the internet, you'll find discussion about various media sources (India, Taiwan, Japan) and quality within different manufacturers.

I cant burn dvds. Ive tried several times with diffrent kinds of discs.  I have never had a problem before but all of a sudden it says SENSE KEY=MEDIUM ERROR.

Just curious...did you ever find a solution for this problem? I am having the EXACT same issue - it just started one day when I was backing data files up, and now I have not been able to burn a single DVD. CD-R's are okay, but no luck with DVD-R's. I have also tried different brands. I think there is some incompatibility problem with the the Mac OS or Roxio's software that is botching communication...

This reply is late, and I hope your issue was solved, but here is what I did when getting the error "Sense Key = MEDIUM ERROR Sense Code = 0x73, 0x03" repeatedly when trying to burn a DVD in Toast:
    Researched the web for help.
Ran Disc Utility off of system installer CD to no avail.
Deleted Toast pref file from library – no luck with this.
Wrapped credit card in eyeglass cleaning cloth and inserted several times into SuperDrive (iMac Intel Core Duo machine) – voilà! Successful burning!

  • What does this mean? drive reported error: sense key = medium error, etc,

I have no idea what the error means. However, need a little more info from you.

  • 2008 Mac Pro burner failure - report "Sense Key = MEDIUM ERROR - Sense Code = 0x73, 0x03"

Problem just arose - burners working days ago - NO major changes in Mac Pro --- Attempting to burn some DVDs (data only), using the latest version of Toast v12.0 & Dragon Burn, as soon as I tell either my internal or external unit to burn, it runs a few minutes then pops up dialog box - "Sense Key = MEDIUM ERROR - Sense Code = 0x73, 0x03". Blanks are new Memorex. I've restarted Mac Pro multiple times, still no burning possible. In dire need to restore capability. Most gracious thanks for ANY immediate assistance.

There are several different incompatible media sold as writeable CDs. You MUST match the media to the abilities of your drive.
I was flummoxed by buying 8x media when my drive was a 2x drive. I needed the other type, and there was nothing helpful in the diagnostics or the packaging that helped me understand that.
EDIT: There is an interesting helpful feature buried in System Profiler ... (read the last two lines of the report):

  • Errors burning DVD disks

My drive has worked faultlessly since I got the PowerMac and continues to do so for CDR's however I tried to backup around 1.5Gb recently and got and error. I have also had an error burning an ISO image. The error seems to occur arouns a third of the way in. I have had no problem burning films via iDVD in the past but I have not tried one (I will do so after this post).
I have tried from mounting in finder (data dvd), disk utility (iso) and Toast (data dvd and toast). The errors are:
    Disk Utility
    Unable to burn
"mydvd.iso" - The device failed to calibrate
    Roxio Toast Titanium
    The drive reported an error:
    Sense Key = MEDIUM ERROR
    Sense Code = 0x73, 0x03
    followed by
    The drive reported an error:
    Sense Key = ILLEGAL REQUEST
    Sense Code = 0x21, 0x02
    BUFFER UNDERRUN
the DVD-R disks used are the ones I have always used as I bought in bulk some 18 months back.

If you've got Toast 7, do a Disc Info and see what the media code is on the discs you have. This tells who manufactured it. As you can see from this site, Imation uses many different manufacturers, many of which are not of high quality.
If you don't have Toast 7, you can download and use DVD Media Inspector to view the media code on the disc (it's just harder to read than Toast's display).
I would also surmise that the discs could have deteriorated in the 18 months you've had them, especially depending on how they've been stored.

I have also tried TDK, Maxell, Verbatim and Sony media
Me too. Out of that list the only brand that has NEVER produced a coaster (on the same burner as yours) is Verbatim DVD-R and Fuji DVD-R. All the others produced a 25-50% failure rate.
Have you tried burning at a slower speed?
Using 16x DVD media is fine - in fact it is difficult to buy any other - but there is a consensus in the Apple Support Forums that a slower burn is a better burn i.e. 2x or 4x (slow burns are better burns!). I always use Toast for burning.
The term "Best" means the fastest speed that the drive told Toast it can write to a specific disc. The drive's firmware and info on the disc decide what speed burns are available. When you press the speed setting button in Toast (after inserting a disc) you'll likely see some speeds in italics and some in bold face. The ones in bold face are supported by that media on that drive. The fastest one is what Toast calls Best.
Audio CDs in particular should be burned at the lowest supported speed.
Verification is a good indicator the disc is burned okay. However, other DVD players can still have problems with the disc. Media problems with various drives is not uncommon. Slower burning may reduce the chance of those problems, and is one of the reasons why RW (read/write) media is always rated slower than DVD-R.
There are some interesting facts here:
    http://www.osta.org/technology/dvdqa/dvdqa4.htm and here:
    http://www.osta.org/technology/dvdqa/dvdqa4.htm
But many will tell you that the 'slower burn is best' theory is outdated. Who really knows? At the end of the day, if your home-made DVD was verified by Toast and will play anywhere on anybody's DVD player, then that is the result we are all after!

Which brand are you using? The top forum favorites are Verbatim & Maxell when it comes to DVD burnings. My MBP loves Verbatim for DVD burnings yet my G5 iMac loves the Maxell & Fuji brands.

  • Sence Key = MEDIUM ERROR, Sence Code = 0X0C, 0X08

thank God, im not the only one
For the 1st 2 years, everything was ok, burning, playing audio cd, burning dvd-r, cdrw, cd, everything i mean.
Then everyhing started when i cant play audio cd (the original audio cd that i bought from the shop). But wut is funny is that, i can play audio cd that i created from this imac. Then i could not play vcd too. But any other data cd is ok, still accesseble.
Then the dvd, at 1st, i can play dvd movie n read dvd data. But now, it seems that some certain brand or speed of dvd cant be read and cant be burn.
I tried to burn a sony dvd-r 1-4x, but failed, but when i burn sony dvd-r 1-8x, it is ok.
and recently when i burn, afterr halfway, this message came out
    Sence Key = MEDIUM ERROR,
    Sence Code = 0X0C, 0X08
    wut doeas it means?
    and wut should i do?

    Hi Misyon Isywaz.
When the CD or DVD burner display this error, that's mean that exist a problem with the media or optical system.
Sense Key, is referred to a fault on the optical system.
Medium Error, is referred to a fault with the disk.
I recommend you to try burn using 2x or 1x speed, if it's works, the problem could be that you doesn't check an option called "Buffer Underrun Prevention" which is located in recorder settings menu in the Roxio Toast Software, or clean your unit using a "Cleaner Disk".
If decreassing the burn speed, the "Sense Key" message persist, your optical unit could be damaged.
Bye, 'n I hope that this can help you to solve your problem.
    Good Look.
    Jose Blanco.

  • Medium Error 0x0c

Using MacBook Pro, Toast Titanium and Verbatim DVD-R...
I was just burning a dvd, and everything was ok, but just after that I tried to burn another disc, and it doesn't even start burning (Medium Error 0x0c) - in between there were no updates, etc.
The thing is that I burned lots of dvd's using the same software and using always the same dvd media - and it never failed a single disc. I also tried to burn something on the same dvd's that didn't work in my mac with the other macbook pro that we have at home -same procedure- and it went ok...
    Any possible solution?

I get the same error in Toast. When I try burning from a burn folder I get error 0x8002006E. This all started about a month ago. I have been using Maxell DVD-R disks for a very long time and had no errors. Suddenly, midway through a spindle, the errors began. With Maxell about 50% of the disks burn fine and the other 50% go a short way into the disk and then fail. With Memorex disks they have all failed and seem to fail as the drive begins the burn. I don't remember if a automatic system update came through at the same time the problem started but I am VERY frustrated. These same disks work fine on a friends PC so this seems to be very Mac related. I have tried changing the burn speed but it has not helped.
