Mega 180 DVD problem

Dear all,
I know the problem with optical drives has been discussed many times, the NEC ND-2500A is supposed to work (somewhat).
With me it has been working almost ok for some time but now it shows the typical behaviour that many had to complain about with their drives:
- system hangs when change disc, need reboot
- eject button stops working
Sometimes,  when I am lucky, I reboot and I manage to acess a CD or DVD, but I can never eject, if I do by opening the lid and pressing the drive button and try any other disc, it will hang.
I thought perhaps this was due to something I had installed, but no, I have two OS loaded, I checked with both and I get the same behaviour. I don't think it has to do with the drive itself, did not flash it and did not record anything recently. Autoplay is disabled. I reinstalled the original drivers that came with the PC, nothing.
WHY?
Can someone please help?
Thanks in advance.

> What do you mean by "somewhat", did you have the eject problems from the beginning?
Jadi,
The eject button of the Mega sometimes stopped working but I could simply eject by pushing the button on the drive. Reading the discs was not a problem.
> Have you tried to unplug the powercord? This will cause the Bluebird controller to reset itself. I can imagine that the BB controller software is not fully compatible with the NEC 2500 although it worked from the beginning.
Actually yes,  I had to unplug a few times to open the box and check if every connection was OK, I booted without the drive and than agin with it to see if anything would change, no result, still hanging.
ANYONE HAS AN IDEA???
WHY DOESN'T IT WORK ANYMORE?
> Something else, how does your MEGA 180 perform with the 30" (!!) LCD screen?
Excellent so far, especially with DVDs (now nix) but it depends how you want to use it, knowing that picture artefacts become more visible with larger sizes.
I am using the MegaPC as a Multimedia center in the living room for everything (including DVD and Divx playback, Sat receiver and Hard Disk recorder, MP3 jukebox, streaming radio)  but the instability of the Mega forced me to keep the standard CE equipment around for back-up.
Dark scenes are a bit the weakspot for LCD vs plasma because of backlight, but brightness is better, and for the rest is great.
Another problem in my setting is deinterlacing with TV content from satellite. I use the Moonlight's Elecard SW decoder. With high motion sequences especially (eg sport) the performance is poor. I am not sure if a good AGP video card would bring about any improvement, I guess is a SW issue still (performance limit?). I tried the ATI AIW 9800 in the past, graphics looked nice, but the TV was not satisfactory, so I use the RF tuner of of the 30"LCD at the moment.
If you consider buying a widescreen display to use with a HTPC, the 300WN5QS is great, it is a monitor with TV fiunction, so has all the setting features you'd expect from a high-end monitor, not the crappy CE settings you find on TV sets.
(I don't mean to do any advertisement here, but if you are interested in specs you can check: http://www.lcddiscount.nl/LCDDiscount.html?url=/Philips-300WN5QS-Zilver-details-thuisbioscoop.html )
Cheers,
Marc

    Please help!!
    Thank you,
    Neil.

Sounds like all of your drivers are not up to date....
Here's what M$ has to say about it (shamelessly copied and pasted from another different website/board post).
    Stop 0x000000D1 or DRIVER_IRQL_NOT_LESS_OR_EQUAL
The Stop 0xD1 message indicates that the system attempted to access pageable memory using a kernel process IRQL that was too high. Drivers that have used improper addresses typically cause this error.
    Interpreting the Message
This Stop message has four parameters:
    Memory referenced.
    IRQL at time of reference.
Type of access (0x00000000 = read operation, 0x00000001 = write operation).
    Address that referenced memory.
    Resolving the Problem
For additional troubleshooting suggestions that apply to all Stop errors, see "Stop Message Checklist" later in this appendix.
Stop 0xD1 messages can occur after installing faulty drivers or system services. If a driver is listed by name, disable, remove, or roll back that driver to confirm that this resolves the error. If so, contact the manufacturer about a possible update. Using updated software is especially important for backup programs, multimedia applications, antivirus scanners, DVD playback, and CD mastering tools.
For more information about Stop 0xD1 messages, see the Microsoft Knowledge Base link on the Web Resources page at http://www.microsoft.com/windows/reskits/webresources. Search using keywords winnt, 0x000000D1, and 0xD1.
    Update Drivers
Updated and comaptiable drivers are very important when running XP. Check your hardware with the HCL http://www.microsoft.com/hcl  If you hardware is not on the list it does not mean it won't work it just means it hasn't been tested by Microsoft and they won't Guarantee it to be compatible. If it not on the list check the manufacturer's website fo an up to date XP driver, if they don't have one you may be out of luck. This goes for motherboards and the bios too.

  • Mega 180 voltage problem

    Dear all,
I just bought this Mega 180 with Athlon 3000+, 1G RAM, using the onboard graphics card.
I took the advice in this forum and reverse the fans direction, although it decreased the cpu temp by 3-4C, but it increased the sys as much as 8C...  I think it's something which we need to be aware of since the cpu certainly can torlerate higher temp than, say the board and harddisk...
OK, let's talk about my problem, two days ago, when I was running sandra 2005 ram/cpu benchmark, PC alert 4 warns me that the 3.3V supply is too low, it drops down to 2.8V once...
My initial thought was that it's because of the high internal temp which gives extra resistance to the board circuit, but after I reverse back the fan, it still stays around 3.13V... which by the ATX standard (3.3V + or - 5%) it's still dangerously low...
Can anyone here share what their voltages are? and does anyone knows whether my voltage would have any negative effects?
Another observation to the Mega180, I hear some little buzzing noise when I run the cpu/ram intensively, is it normal?
Any help/advice would be greatly appreciated, thx
    Kevin

Has anyone got problems with the 3.3v low voltage lead?
No problem but PC Alert4 shows me strange values:
    3.18 for 3.3v
    5.02 for 5v
N/A for 12v and when I test the 12v with another software like speedfan it shows me 10.1v and even 9.8v
But everything is fine, I don't have any strange behavior or misfunction.
I have a real buzz too, when I play 3D games or when I use my TV tuner. It's certainly a capacitor.
Sorchu, for your sys temp problem, do you remove the HDD cage?

  • New MSI Mega 180: Some problems...

I've just bought a new MSI Mega 180... and I've come up with some problems:
I can't get the radio to be detected in windows... not sure why. When I load, radio webupdate, it comes up with: Cannot find radio module.
I can't get into the Wireless configuration monitor. If you select Gateway or AP mode, and then hit configure, it comes up with a pw prompt, and I can't find what to put in there... that's driving me nuts...
When I'm running windows, the front panel is compleatly black, should it be showing anything?

The clock should be on or if you installed PC Alert it would show the CPU temp. and stuff like that. I think media centre 3 shows something on the display (I can't get it installed)
    Can't answer your other questions.

  • Mega 180 DVD+/-RW DL Compatible Drives

Bought a Samsung DVD burner and it seems it isn't compatible with my Mega 180.   Luckily the store I bought it from have a seven day return policy. However, they don't stock any MSI drives. My old LG DVD drive worked fine in the 180. I was wondering which of these drives would be most likely to work:
    Liteon 1633s
    LG 4160B
    NEC 3500A
    Pioneer 108
    Sony DRU710
I'm probably leaning toward one of the first three, since I have seen in these forums that some NEC drives work, my old LG worked and I've always been lucky with Liteons.
Anyone here have a dual layer working in their Mega? What brand?

I use the NEC-3500A in mine and it works perfectly (and my fav store has them on sale today as well...http://www.newegg.com/app/viewProductDesc.asp?description=27-152-032&depa=1)

  • MEGA 180 USB Problem

Anyone else have this problem?  I recently built a MEGA 180, installed WinXP home, SP1, all the drivers, etc. and the machine ran fine with no problems for a couple of weeks.  However, one day when I booted up, my USB mouse no longer worked.  In fact, none of my USB devices work.  I realized that my front and rear USB ports are all dead.  The devices (printer, scanner, mouse, keyboard) all still work in my other PC.  Under Device Manager USB Controllers it does now say "Unknown Device".  It says this even when I have no USB devices hooked up.
I've tried reinstalling the motherboard drivers, checking all the physical connections on the board, I've even reformatted the hard drive, reinstalled XP and all the drivers and I still have the same problem.
Is my USB bus burnt out?  Is the motherboard defective?  I've built over 20 computers and I've never had this problem before.
Any help or ideas will be apprecieated!

I just RMA'ed the MEGA 180 - $25 shipping UPS, YIKES!!!  And that's not even their 3 day service.
My customer is very upset with me regarding this machine.  I built it and tested it, like I do all my customer's machines.  Then it started getting buggy, things started acting weird, I lost the USB bus, then it stopped booting all together.  I've spent countless hours troubleshooting it, it just goes on and on.  I usually build mid to full tower machines and always with ASUS boards and I've yet to ever have a problem.  The things build fast, run rock solid, and never give me a problem.
However, this customer saw this machine on Tomshardware.com, fell in love with it, and just had to have it and against my better judgement, I agreed to build it.  Now I'm deep in the hole on this thing.  If you build PCs for a living, DO NOT BUILD YOUR CUSTOMER A MEGA 180!!!!!!  You'll live to regret it.  I"m thinking of just buying a new case and stuffing all her parts into it and calling it even.
However, if you don't mind beta testing something (at your expense) and you don't mind loading drivers, reloading drivers, erasing the drive and starting over again, trying to get things to work, getting things to work, have them stop working, etc then this machine is for you.  Me, I think I would rather just hit my head with a hammer.

  • Mega 180 setup problems

I'm having various problems setting up a Mega 180.  Spent 2 days installing software, then hours uninstalling various bits to get the remote control working with Media Center III!
Using MSI 8606 recommended TV card it will not find any TV channels.  Cable was unpluged from a WinTV card which found channels, even with XP service pack 2 installed.  Anyone had any luck finding channels?
Final straw came after 2 days installing, PC shut itself down and will not now boot.  Hi-Fi function works but pressing PC button has NO effect (power supply fan does not turn).  I suspect a failed power supply so now I have to take apart box it up and arrange for supplier to collect.  Then wait for supplier to test it, verify fault and arrange for delivery of new unit.
Can anyone out there offer me light at the end of this dark tunnel that it is possible to get this thing working, I mean properly, not some part working bodge?
I'm feeling very fed-up at the moment, as you can tell!

Take ir easy, man!! Don't be
Maybe your unit es faulty or badly configured. The best and easiest is pack it and return it to the shop and let them test and fix it up! You could have tried some tricks that solve 90% of computer-related problems. stop-start
Clearing CMOS, some problems dissapear. Unplugging from the wall for a couple of minutes also solves a lot of problems. Mine didn't boot up when with my TVCard installed. Suddenly, one day, everything worked ok.
Nowadays, my systems run REALLY good; is very stable and with low temps and noise. Of course, remote control is , lcd is more  and so msi software is but.... with a little of patience, you'll get a good HTPC ready!!

  • HD 3450 in Mega 180 - connection problem

    Hi,
I'm planning to buy an ATI HD3450 based card, Asus brand. It has an additional molex power connector on board. I do not have any spare molex connectors left in my Mega 180. I'm not using the one marked by MSI as for ODD, because it is always powered on, so I use the other one for both HDD and ODD.
Would I burn the PSU if I use the same 12V line for molex (and connect it to HD3450) as I use for HDD and ODD? I might be a little to much for the PSU 12V line to hold and power all 3 devices at once.
Does anyone know what is HD3450 card demand for power? I've been looking over the internet for 2 days and I found various answers: from 36 Watts up to 75 Watts.
36 Watts is OK for Mega PSU but 75 is out of it's range (+CPU, HDD, M/B, ODD, RAM).
Why do I want HD3450?  It comes from Asus as low profile and it is AGPx8. Low profile VGA means more hot CPU air getting out easily (both CPU fans reversed).
To those who have ATI 9700/9800 series and nVidia 66xx series: you have an power supply connector on VGA board, 6 pin or molex, how did you connect it to the PSU? Did you use the same power 12V line as for HDD or adopted an another one?
Is it possible to connect the unused SATA power connector to VGA? Yes, I know I have to adopt the connector, cut the SATA connector out and solder in molex or 6 pin, but that's the easy mechanical part. My question is about the electrical part. How many Amperes can it sustain at 12V?
Thanks for all answers (I hope) in advance :-)

Thanks, but take a look: http://www.diamondmm.com/3450PE512.php , Specifications tab. It says "Power Consumption : 75 Watts".
This spec if for 512MB PCI-E version, but I do not think that 256MB AGP version is so much different.
Where did you find 25 Watts info? If that was true the card would not need any additional power, I suppose that AGP slot can provide 25 Watts itself.
I'll try to connect my ODD to the other molex (the one MSI designed for it). I'm not worried about any power drain when it's not oparating, I just hope it is safe for the electronic equipment such as ODD to be constantly powered.
Does anybody have HD 3450 in their Mega 180? I have read that this card has some problems with nVidia chipset based mobos. At least had a half year ago. I cannot find any info if this issue has been fixed by Asus (no specific information in thier latest driver changelog).

  • Mega 180 display problem

I' m using the onboard S-Video out to display on my 27" flatscreen CRT TV.  The problem is with this output that it displays.  It's a little hard to describe, but it reminds me of adjusting the pincushion controls on a computer CRT.  All 4 edges of the screen aren't straight.  Instead, they are bowed in slightly.  I've tried adjusting this problem away, but alas my TV doesn't have controls to tackle this problem.  Yes, I'm using the proper video encoding for the U.S., NTSC-M.  Is this problem normal, or something I should expect from this unit?

I'm currently using 56.72.  I've tried the Windows default drivers, the ones that came with the install disk, Windows Update drivers, and the latest, version 56.72.  All have given me the same problem.  I don't think the problem is with the drivers.

  • MSI Mega 180 problems

Hello all, i'm quite stuck on something and need some help.
I have recently purchased an MSI Mega 180 deluxe and installed an pioneer a07 dvd writer in there, for some reason it won't let me burn cd's in audio cd format from wav files, which i need for my music studio.
Also i constructed an external case to put an internet pioneer a03 dvd writer and did the same process and believe it or not i was able to burn a audio cd, so not sure what the problem is, could the msi mega 180 dislike my newer model of pioneer, or is the pioneer on it's way out, which i find strange as it's newer and quite new.
I use nero to burn most of my cd's or dvd's which had no problem with when the dvd writer was on another desktop, it seems to get up to 26% and just freezes there, which the buffer level not moving at all.
    Hope someone can help, thanks

  • Mega problems with new Mega 180 - Help, please!

Hello everyone. I recently built a MEGA 180 system for a customer of mine, and have been having NOTHING but problems with it. First off, during the Windows XP PRo install, I'll often receive errors stating that certain files cant be copied, and I'll have to hit enter several times before the file will copy. I've replaced the CD-ROM with an MSI model, and used a different XP CD, and still receive these errors during install pretty often. Secondly, once I get everything installed, I'll get numerous program errors in XP (usually explorer.exe and iexplore.exe, but pretty much every program crashes sometimes). I've used a different HD, different RAM, and I've formatted the HD and reinstalled XP at least 6 times, and am STILL having problems. Im a computer tech, and fairly proficient at building PCs, though this is my first SFF pc I've built. Im really at my wits end here, and am not sure where else to go for ideas on what this can be. I've submitted an online help ticket with MSI, but I wanted to see if you guys had any ideas in the meantime. System specs are as follows:
    MSI Mega 180
AMD XP 2800+ CPU (I used artic silver, btw)
512MB Corsair XMS PC3200 RAM (I also used 512MB GEIL PC3200 Golden Dragon)
    80GB Western Digital HD
    MSI CD-RW/DVD-ROM combo drive
    average temp under load: 50c
    average temp idle: 36c
    Thanks in advance guys!
    Rheq

Well, hrmm... :noidea:I know when I built my Mega180 I didn't have those problems at least, so it's hard to pinpoint.  My bets are toward the memory (although you did swap it out, so that's what bugs me with my thought on that).  My next guess would be the MoBo itself (which would be an MSI replace basically as there isn't much leeway for a different board for that case (or getting it out  ).  I am shocked, however, that you have your sys temps so low.  I have an Athlon XP 2700+ (333 FSB, Thunderbird) and my temps go around 60C with the case open and a small room fan blowing through the case...for now).  Do you mind telling me how you got your system so cool?  I've been considering the Koolance Exos watercooling just to bring this system to stable, lower temps [but I've never dealt with watercooling yet  )  Of course, sys temps have always been by biggest problem.
Sorry if this wasn't a big help, but the randomness of the errors seems to lean towards the memory/mobo...possibly the HDD I suppose.  Does it still receive errors when not dealing with an optical disc (CD or DVD)?  If so, that definitely rules out the optical as the only problem (it may still be a problem, but it wouldn't be the only one at least).

  • Big problem: Mega 180 died

Since last night after I've changed the bios setting, the mega 180 just died. There weren't any overclocking changes in the bios. Just when I save the changes and exit, the pc shows a completely blank screen, while all the fans are rotating at  their full potential. The 'pc' led was on, the hdd was on, everything had their power supplied and was on, but the screen was completely dissappeared. After that I turned the pc off and turned it on again: same results. The pc even turns itself off after a minute. Then I've removed the power supply cord, waited for some time. When I put the cord back again, the pc turned itself on with the same state as discribed above, after a minute it when down again on itself. Then I had removed as many components as possible (HDD, memory, dvd-rom etc.). Same results. Next I've resetted the bios, put the fsb jumper set into safe mode etc. Checked if all the other things are ok (capacitors etc.) None of them helped. I even used another PSU. I feel completely hopeless now. The weird thing is that the pc turns itself on when I put the power cord into the pc and then goes down again.
Has any of you got the same problem? Can anybody please help me?

I'm guessing that you get no beeps.
It sounds like a processor burn out, you could smell (make sure you don't touch the chip directly) it, sometimes you can smell the smell of a burn out... you'll know it if you smell it. I'd try another cpu..
Does the Hi-Fi part work? And if that CPU swap doesn't work, try swapping the ram, and  try using a vga card...
Just stabbing in the dark, not had too much experience with the 180's, this is what I'd try for a normal pc.

  • Mega 180 problems - definitive list.

Folks - I thought it might be worth starting a single thread for capturing all the problems being experienced with the Mega 180.
At the moment, I'm experiencing the following:
The remote control isn't working for anything other than volume in PC mode.
In Hi-Fi mode, CD audio is distorted.
My TV card has stopped picking up TV channels (it worked initially but has since stopped).
Media Center crashes whenever I select the music item.
Media Center crashes whenever I attempt to do a picture slide show.
I get no sound output from Media Center applications (Windows Media Player is working fine).
I'm not able to get any FM reception from the radio (AM seems OK, frequencies are set correctly for my region - Europe).
From reading through various postings, it seem other people are having the following additional problems:
CD / DVD eject isn't working.
USB keyboard and mouse aren't working (I'm using a logitech wireless keyboard and mouse through USB without problems).
If anyone's had other problems or has any resolutions to these, post away.
    Regards,
    Grum.

    Following up yesterday's discussions,
I tried re-installing WinPVR last night. The version I got on the InterVideo CD bundled with the TV card just doesn't install. So I then downloaded the 15-day trial of the latest version from Intervideo's website. This at least installedl. However whilst trying to tune in TV channels (with very little success), it repeatedly came up with a message informing me the trial period had expired and chucked me out. I wasn't prepared to pay for something I've supposedly already bought and doesn't appear to work.
I've now given up on WinPVR.
I then downloaded and installed ShowShifter. It seems to be pretty good. I've got TV tuned in and my music and picture libraries set up. I've had some issues with sound -  on TV channels I get a couple of minutes of sound then it dissapears. I suspect this is down to different applications modifying the sound settings. I'll investigate further - there's a couple of postings on the ShowShifter message board about this.
Otherwise it seems pretty good - I should be able to get the remote working with it, possibly through girder. And the EPG support is good. If you've software development skills its pretty expandable and the message board is full of postings from the development team. Most importantly, it HASN'T CRASHED yet. I've un-installed Media Center for just now.
Some of the problems I reported yesterday, I managed to resolve last night.
I couldn't pick up TV channels because I had changed my input from 'Cable' to 'Antenna'. Although I am using an antenna, the card is only picking up signals on the 'Cable' setting.
My sound output problems were down to the relevant channels being muted. A quick play about in Soundstorm sorted everything out - doh!
I'll post further experiences with ShowShifter if anyone's interested.
    Cheers,
    Grum.

  • Front Panel LEDs problems for Mega 180

Hi, it's rigth one year I got a Mega 180, and I've not ended yet to tune and optimize it
    I admit it's like a hobby now
I immediately ask you for my LEDs problems.
I have read many topics and maybe other people have the same my problem, also if I'm not sure if they treat about the Front Panel LEDs when they speak about the "LCD Display".
I have some switched off LEDs in my front panel, in the "time" displayng and in the volume bar: I have to substituite them? Someone have done it before? It's possible to remove the front panel or I have to disasseble all the pc
    Or it's a firmware problem?
I also thank all people that cured the section of optical devices compatibility: last week I bought a new Pioneer 111D, because my LG GSA-4167B was not suitable in the PC mode, for DVD playback.
In fact I had many problems for the DVD fluently playback: I have spent 4 months trying new video codecs and also substituting the video card, then I finally have understood that was an optical device problem.
The Pioneer 111D was perfect in the PC mode, but then I had problems for HI-FI playing mode
Then I finally used my old Pioneer 108, that I had in the old desktop, and all work (I pray) fine both in HI-FI and PC mode.
I'll be very happy also to describe to whom that will ask me, my experience with the Mega 180 "assembling", during the last year, hoping it could be useful for other people.
    Thanx

Initially, you might just hook your ring to a case structure to
    determine which frame exe
cutes. You can put the terminals for the
Booleans in the different diagrams and about the only other thing to
keep in mind is that you probably want a delay in the loop.
