Mega 180 Eject Button

Hi,
Just recently I am experiencing problems with the eject button on the Mega 180, when it is pressed sound (and when running live tv) pauses for 2secs and then continues-not a major issue but something which really is annoying!  Any ideas on how to fix it?  It may have happened when I updated to the new bios through live monitor but I don't see how that could affect it!
Thanks
J_Jordan4302

I've had my Mega 180 since Sept. I have the same problem with the eject button causing audio to pause. I don't think it is a bios issue.  I  do not use automatic update and have not updated the bios that came with the Mega in Sept. ..being a firm believer of if it is not broke don't fix it.
I have just learned to live with it. There are other annoyances that are far more bothersome... for instance the biggest annoyance to me is about twice a week either I lose the audio or the system hangs at restart. The only fix is to unplug from the wall.  However if people have suggestions I'd be happy to remove even minor annoyances...

  • MSI MEGA 180 Media Centre Full Screen Button

I have a MEGA 180 with Media Centre III and was wondering if there was a button on the remote that does full screen instead of having to start the item you wish then trying to navigate to the button and pressing ok?
This is for the sections such as MP3 mode for the visulisations or Video Clip mode for full screen home movies.
I have tried all of the buttons but none of them seem to work.
    Any help would be apprecitated
    Cheers.

That makes the MCDIII run in full screen, but the video (etc) still runs in a window inside the MCDIII App. The only ways I found were to set the settings to auto maximise the display, or to press the button to the bottom right of the picture. Also I found there was no way of getting back to menu mode without using the keyboard (unless you were prepared to navigate the buttons without seeing them!!!).
This made MCDIII totaly unsuitable as a remote controlled application, and hence I binned it. I now use MediaPortal which works well. Just need to find a better way of getting the DVD filters to work.

  • Mega 865 Pro System Crash pressing CD eject button

Samsung SpinPoint 250GB SATA II Hard Drive SP2004C
    1GB Kingston Hyperx 512 DDR400 PC3200 CL3
    Intel Pentium 4 630 3 Ghz Socket 775 800Mhz 2mb
    LG GSA4163B 16X DVD Dual Layer R/RW/RAM
    Windows XP SP2
When I press the eject button to eject a CD the system crashes into bootup and then goes through the disk error check and then reloads successfully. I originally made a post on this subject but then, after uninstalling and reinstalling everything I got it to work.
What should happen when you press the eject button is a message appears on the Windows desktop saying somethng like "CD Eject". and the cd ejects. However the underlying system must be buggy because it starts to crash all over agian when something in a variety of pieces of software gets installed. I just installed ASPI drivers because Audiocatalyst indicated that only Analogue access was available when accessing my DVD drive. I have had that problem before using Windows 2000 and installing the API drivers that Microsoft for some reason does not install solved the problem. BUt now, AGAIN!! the damn system crashes when I press the eject button.
MSI techincal support is abysmal and no reply from them so far. IN fact, there query system does not even work any more.
Luckily I have ghosted a working system but what can I do to stop the system crashing?
I have read on other posts that I should change DVD drives but that can't be the reason because it does work until some small, and common system changes occur like updating ASPI drivers. I see there is a new sticky on this system which I will add to when it is stable - and I would not recommend anyone to buy it until all the problems are ironed out and until MSI talks to its customers.
I forgot to add that if I open the CD flap and press the drives own button it works perfectly which means that it is MSI's hardware that is at fault.

(sorry, I posted this message to another topic as well...)
    Hi,
Some days ago I encountered a problem that seem to be very similar to this. My MEGA180 freezes because of the DVD writer. The situation is as follows:
The PC boots up without error.
If the PC was booted with a CD/DVD in the tray, it can be read without errors.
I can open the DVD tray by pressing the front panel eject button.
    And now comes the problem...
The front panel button does not respond, I cannot close the tray.
If I close the tray by pressing the traay itself, the contend of the CD/DVD cannot be read, the machine freezes.
The machine works perfectly in HiFi mode.
I reinstalled Windows to a clean HDD, the problem remains.
I replaced the DVD reader with a brand new one, the problem remains.
This problem emerged without any specific reason, from one day to another. before that, Mega180 worked perfectly for several months. I did not change anything in the system during those days when the problem emerged. However, I was using Nero several times then.
Does anyone has any idea what can be the reason for this problem?
    Thanks in advance,
    Coix

  • MEGA PC 865 Pro eject button crashes system

When I press the eject button to eject a CD the system crashes into bootup and then goes through the disk error check and then reloads successfully. This didnot seem to happen using Windows 98 but it happens using both Windows 2000 and Windowsxp. Help!
Has anybody out there had easier experiences?

please keep to your other topic as this may in fact be related to that

  • MEGA 180 CD-ROM eject problem

If i press the eject buttun for my DVD drive and then press eject once more to return the tray the drive spits the tray out again.  This does not happen if i push the tray back into the drive manually.
I've tried a number of different NForce drivers and also checked different firmware versions for my DVD drive. But the behaviour is the same. I'm having a feeling this problem is related to the MediaCenter deluxe, but I'm not sure.
Have anyone else experienced similar behaviour?

I see same behaviour on my system (specs in the signature) and I don't use media centre software. It is probably a hardware issue, as the same happens in HiFi mode (eject button only ejects the tray, and does not close it).
MSI says that you should use their CD/DVD drives, compatibility with other makes is not guaranteed. Probably you can find firmware for your DVD drive which would correct this problem, but it is unlikely, IMO.

  • Things to Know Before Building Your Mega 180

Some people have asked me for a list of tips so here is my attempt---I'll ask Wonk to sticky it if it turns out OK....
Feel free to PM me with more tips---I'll add as necessary....
TIP SHEET FOR THE MEGA 180:
So you bought that new Mega 180 and the docs leave a lot to be desired......Don't panic!!  Take a look at this tip sheet.  Should save you a lot of hours!
    RAM AND PROCESSOR:
Several things here.....If you are going to use onboard video----you should NOT use higher RAM than PC 2700----waste of money to buy higher as the Nforce2 18G "Crush" was only designed to run no higher than with DDR333 RAM (PC2700).  Nvidia warns against it on their site.  I have personally experienced a LOT of problems when you try to run the onboard at DDR 400 (PC3200)----trashed Bios in most cases.  Also---the 18G and to some extent---"Dual Channel" is picky about memory----try to get a matched pair of DIMMS----and if you REALLY want to be on the safe side----go to Nvidias site and look up the page that lists known, compatable memory with the NForce2 chipsetNforce2 compatable memory.  I use A-Data 512 sticks---but they are hard to find.
If you are going to use a Vidcard---then higher memory is just fine----but if you are NOT planning on overclocking-----there is really NO need for higher than PC2700 as the default bus for Barton 2800+ and below is FSB 166 (DDR333---PC 2700).
Alyways run your RAM (Synch) 100%---do not play with dividers if you are using the onboard video.  If you have no clue what I just said----you are fine as the defaults will take care of this----this last was for overclockers.
Processor----I like the cost of the Barton 2800+ right now----fast, cheap and even using the onboard and no overclocking----you have a fast machine that can do anything.  The 2800+ also leaves the door open for a slight overclock (I have not tried this yet) without too much stress on anything.
    LCD PANEL:
Do Not----I say again----Do Not use the "welcome.exe" program----or ANY other program on ANY disk or the MSI website to do ANYTHING to your front panel.  That program is for the Mega 651 model and WILL TRASH YOUR LCD.  The LCD panel works just fine----it doesn't need any updating.
If this advice is to late, the firmware fix is in here:
    https://forum-en.msi.com/index.php?threadid=46355&sid=
Do download and install the latest version of PC Alert MSI Mega 180 Downloads----works great with the front LCD panel and displays PC info nicely.
Use the EQ mode buttons while playing in the HiFi mode----changes the sound a lot and also the display changes------COOL!
    OPTICAL DRIVE:
Use an MSI optical drive----basically anything from MSI will work fine---some other drives are reported to work fine like a NEC 2500A----but if you use an MSI drive----you can't go wrong.  You might want to put the drive in another machine with a floppy first----and download and update that drive to the latest firmware (most will require a floppy to do that and the Mega 180 has none.)
    CABLE MANAGEMENT:
Buy a dollar pack of cable ties and go to work-----make sure ALL cables are away from the front of the intake fan for the CPU----you want a very clear path to the cooler.  Less clutter---better airflow.  Better airflow----lower temps.
    CPU INSTALL:
Get rid of the MSI thermal grease with some Goof Off or acetone-----and get some good Arctic Silver 3, AS5 or AS Ceramique.  Clean both the chip top and the bottom of the HS with denatured alcohol before applying the thermal grease.  You might also want to lapp the bottom of the HS which is not very well done----but I found it not necessary.  The HS/Fan unit is very easy to install----just rotate your screw down points as perscribed by the sticker on the cooler----don't tighten one screw all the way down----then go to the next.
    DRIVERS:
I found the drivers on the install disk to be non-functional---- get the latest drivers from the MSI website (you can use Live Update for this) or go to http://www.nforcershq.com and get the latest Nforce2 Driver Remix from Morpheus1 or Mwarhead.
DO NOT use the Nvidia SW IDE driver (say "No" when it asks you in the driver install)  Only use the ITB (In The Box) IDE driver----it's the default driver.  Your Optical device will probably not function correctly (eject, etc) with the Nvidia SW IDE driver.
Nforce2 SoundStorm Drivers are a tricky topic----there are TONS of versions out there.... I've had the best luck so far with Drivers 4.31 (Off Microsoft Windows Updates---it was a Driver Update) and Audio Control Panel 4.31.  Nvidia has a driver update package now JUST for audio-----posted Here
If you are having problems with Media Center III crashing----it seems to be a conflict between the SoundStorm Drivers and Media Center III,  Uninstall your Nvidia audio devices in the device manager (Three of them----there is one hidden---so go to view and "show hidden devices")  then reboot and let Windows rerecognize your devices and reload drivers.  This will solve most problems until Media Center II has another bad crash----in which case---you may have to do this procedure over again.  You can tell if it's really hosed up because the radio sound will come on automatically at boot----or you will have lost the SoundStorm Control Panel Icon in the SysTray.  I'm working on different versions of SoundStorm to see which works best---will update if I find anything new.  (Update)----4.31 seems to be the best but I still can'ttotally eliminate the crashing in Media Center III.
Once you get your Lan device up and running (or your modem) Go to Windows Update and make sure you are completly updated with all latest window updates---If using WinXP-----you need to be at WinXP ServPack 1a when you are done.
Use Windows Cleanup and Defrag when you are done----ESPECIALLY cleanup---to get rid of any left over temp files in the Mega----To get the BEST and most optimised defrag----run windows defrag at least three times in a row----maybe more----it will REALLY optimise the drive.
    TV CARD:
The main TV Card designed for the Mega 180 is the MSI 8606-40 Mega TV Card----be careful to get it vice the other version of the MSI 8606 which is the MSI 8606-10 TV@anywhere Master.
The Mega TV Card does not include a Radio while the 8606-10 DOES include a radio.  Since your Mega 180 already has a radio----you absolutely don't need or want the 8606-10 TV@anywhere Master.
Do NOT use any drivers or software you receive with the Mega TV Card MSI 8606-40----just set the disks aside.  You will ONLY uses the drivers off the Mega 180 Install Disk.
The Mega TV Card MUST be installed before the menu item for "Install TV Tuner Drivers" becomes visible on the Mega 180 install disk.
Make sure your TV Card is hooked into the line called "Remote Control" within the Mega 180 itself----there is a small 3 inch connecting wire in the TV card box.
The TV and Radio function well with the remote----but you must have MSI Media Center III installed.  I could not get the TV or the Radio to work without Media Center III.
Upon initial setup of the TV within Media Center III---you may have to switch the source between cable and antenna to get the initial channels to auto scan.  Once done auto scanning---switch back to cable as source (assuming you have cable).
Using the remote to force the TV screen to full screen:  When you use the up/down arrows on the remote----watch the menu items on the screen----the various menu item buttons will highlight as you hit the arrows.
Once you have highlighted the little arrow button on the lower right of the screen----just below the TV display (it will turn green)----hit the ENTER key
It goes to widescreen----hit the ENTER key again------it goes to fullscreen
BTW, the remote works fine-----the trick is you HAVE to have Media Center III installed and available to be called for it to control the TV Card----Radio Etc.  It will start up normally when you push the TV button on the remote.
    BIOS SETTINGS:
The defaults will mostly work.  One thing----to get BEST performance out of the NForce 2 Onboard video----set AGP to 128 and Set Frame Buffer to 128----I had crashes with almost any other video setting.  I'm still playing with PCI clock, voltages, and some other settings to get better stability-----will let you know.....
    6 CHANNEL SOUND
Use all three ports in the back of the Mega 180 and then configure it using the SoundStorm Control Panel----Use the "Speaker Setup Wizard".  Check and adjust using the "Test Tone" button.  I'm using an inexpensive set of Analog Altec Lansing 5.1s----the sound is excellent.
That's all for now----tell me what else you've found and I'll post.
    John

My MSI MEGA 180 has a strange display on the monitor.
I opened the boxed removed all items.
Installed the CPU (supported on the CPU compatability list for the MSI MEGA 180), installed the heatsink & fan.
    Installed the HD drive.
    Installed the MSI DVD+/-RW
Installed 1 DIMM module of DDR RAM PC2700 333MHZ 1GB
Pushed the Power button for the PC and the desplay is corrupted.
I tried the 4 possible configurations for Jumpers 7 and 8 to alter the FSB speed with no luck.
I also tried the 4 different J7 and J8 configurations without having the HDD and DVD-RW drives connected - same result.
I also tried the 4 different J7 and J8 configurations with the Secondary VGA output connected to my monitor.
I also tried the 4 different J7 and J8 configurations with the S-Video output connected to my TV and no signal at all.
Both my monitor and HDD work fine with my other PC.
I noticed the jumper pins are not numbered - made the configuration job a bit more tedious.
Please note the LCD screen works correctly, however the redio tuner in HiFi mode doesn't pick up any local stations.
As I am a Software Test Engineer, I am 100% confident I have checked all possible configurations including clearing the CMOS, but the system simply will not display to the VDU. The POST should at least be visible when Power is turned on for the PC mode.
NOTE: I will update the RAM Brand as soon as I find out the title from the supplier, but I believe it is OEM.
NOTE II: this is the URL to the CPU used: http://www.excaliberpc.com/product_info.php?products_id=1798

  • Compact Flash Drives/Other Probs Mega 180

I've had my MEGA 180 for almost two weeks and like many here it has been a pain in my butt.
After reformatting and installing the software in a certain order I finally got my system somewhat stable, but I am running into new issues now.
My compact flash drives no longer show up in my computer, I can't find them in Device Manager either.  Also every now and then my network card will only send not receive.  Tried different cables and it's no help.  It may also be my cable modem, but I don't know.
I'm not running the nForce IDE SW driver because if I do I get the eject button lock-up problem people are having, but the performance leaves something to be desired.
My PC Alert also died, it was working fine.  Now if it is allowed to boot it will not completely load its GUI and begin to say my CPU is running way hotter than it is and after a minute of 100% CPU it will cut off my computer if not killed.  I just un-installed it for now.  The funny thing is, their Fuzzy Logic program works for getting the temps.
I'm in a back and forth email wth MSI Taiwan right now, but I don't see it going anywhere.  Hoping like everyone else these issues can be fixed with driver and BIOS updates.  I would be EXTREMELY unhappy to have to go through an RMA process even with companies that have good RMA policies.
As far as their bundled software, MSI Media Center is the biggest POS I have ever used.  I am currently using ShowShifter and it works REALLY well with my 8606 master tuner.
Enough ranting for now, if anybody else has similar problems, let me know.  If you have solutions EVEN BETTER!

    xp sp1a, all patches, etc.
PC4000 (yes overkill, but I got a good deal on it)
I had 2700 in it and it still acted the same way so I doubt memory is the problem.
Now my damn tv tuner is being an ass and is making it so I can only view the cable right in RGB24, not the default YUY2.  In YUY2 it is almost like the brightness settings/contrast settings are all wrong, but adjusting them doesn't do anything.  It worked this morning.
If I had a dollar for everytime I had said "it worked this morning" with this thing I'd be able to buy something else.

  • Mega 180 Dead ?? Wont POST, HIFI Works. [SOLVED]

Hiya all, was wondering if anyone can help me out.
Been running a MSI Mega 180 for a couple of years now, without a problem, the system consisted of the following parts.
    MSI Mega 180
    AMD Athlon CPU
    512MB Ram
    40GB HDD
    Sony DVD-ROM
This morning i carried out a small upgrade on my other system, which left my a Pioneer DVD Burner (DVR-108) spare, so i decided to swap out the old Sony Reader from my Mega180.  I removed all the leads, opened h case and swapped out the drives.  Upon plugging the Mega 180 back in the PC fired up as if the power button had been pressed.  However it didn't boot i got a long beep from the unit followed by a 5 second gap then another long beep, i assume that this repeats, i didn't want to leave it beeping for ages.
I have since removed the DVD Burner, HDD and the RAM and am still getting the beeping, i have searched around the forum but cannot find the exact same problem.  Is is the Power Supply that has died, the motherboard or the CPU??
The HIFI mode still works, and reads Cd's from the new drive.  The Burner also spins up, ejects and closes while the PC is beeping, the HDD also spins up.
I have removed the HDD, DVD and all the internal casing to check the motherboard visually and all seems fine. here is my problem (the stock PSU is being used just connected externally)
    http://s177.photobucket.com/albums/w237/Rich_Lumb/?action=view&current=Mega180beep.flv
(The quality is a bit poor all the beeps are the same tone/length/volume
    Can anyone help me out??
I cant test the CPU as all my other systems are Pentium 4's, if i can ascertain that it is the CPU i will go buy another, i dont want to waste any money if i dont need one though.
    Thanks Again,
    Rich

    SOLVED IT (I Think)
Was looking through the forums and found a unlucky fella with the same beeping as me, he fixed it by swapping the RAM.
I swapped the RAM from slot one to two, that DIDNT fix it so back into one again, the 180 then stopped turning itself on when i plugged in the Power Lead, the power button turned on the power but nothing on screen, also no beeping, strange
another CMOS clear later and the machine showed up the MSI onscreen branding and loaded the default CMOS Setting after pressing F1 up came Windows.
So i dont know what caused this, i might go again, i just dont know (i'm backing up incase)
Is it my PSU thats on its way out??
    Will keep you posted
    Rich.

  • New MEGA 180 - not too good

Well I just built my Mega 180, up for about 48 hours. My quick exp:
I read most of the threads here before buying so I knew what I was getting into...  Anyway, first off with a clean install of XP, the NEC 2500A worked great! I thought I dodged a bullet on that one, but after I installed MC3 and updated some drivers(forget which ) the eject button on the remote stopped working.  It ejects fine from explorer and most other apps. Its apparent to me that MSI is working pretty hard to be sure you buy only their HW on this appliance.  So all you people waiting around for 'a patch' I wouldn't hold your breath.  They are working against you. hard.
PCAlert4 - Worked when I first installed, but wouldnt display fan speed. I updated to the web ver(#.?)  it then it then its stopped sending info LCD completely. I updated my BIOS to the new version. Still wont display to LCD, but app grabs CPU fan speed ok. (1000 rpm variance from BIOS). V. annoying. They should really stop trying to make this stuff look cool and make it functional first. I think after some hacking I can get this to work though. Ideas appreciated.
Clock - displays 24hr clock, fine, but I dont wear fatigues everday! Anyone know to change this?
Radio - Its crap. I was really hoping that the radio would be independent of the OS. I dont want to look at my monitor just to change a stinking radio station(MSI radio). Just because my computer is 'on' doent mean Im sitting in front of it! Cant change "EQ mode" while the computer on, fark... the remote doesnt even change the stations when the computer is on. Volume is all that works. This one really erks me.
Thats about all the trouble I'm having. The rest seems ok; but this MSI 180 is having a huge identity crisis.  Its making me stressed.  I feel like I just forked over $300 for a small case with a clock on the front and an impossible to open DVD player.
    Thoughts appreciated, thanks.

I just wanted to post update.
PC alert 4 - I finally got PC alert 4 to work. There seems to be a conflict with Search & Destroy v.1.3.1. I unintalled on a whim, rebooted, and the LCD reports sys info again. Not positive there is a correlation as no TSRs were loaded, but that seems to be what happened. Fix: jarhead's post led me to remove MSI radio from the 'startup' folder. It worked, they don't like each other in there.
MSI Radio 1.00.01 - I unintstalled both MC3 and MSI radio, and reinstalled MSI radio alone. Most remote functions still don't work as I would 'expect': no preset tuning from remote, can't record from remote, can't change EQ Mode *at all. I guess this is all because its still version 1.. is this the same experience for everyone?
NEC 2500A - Work fine as far as I can tell, but I havent burned much or used it in MC3. But the eject button on the front panel works just dandy.    Its the ir remote eject button that seems to have stopped working. Just wanted to be clear on that.
    TLC continues.

  • Mega 180 DVD problem

    Dear all,
I know the problem with optical drives has been discussed many times, the NEC ND-2500A is supposed to work (somewhat).
With me it has been working almost ok for some time but now it shows the typical behaviour that many had to complain about with their drives:
    - system hangs when change disc, need reboot
    - eject button stops working
Sometimes,  when I am lucky, I reboot and I manage to acess a CD or DVD, but I can never eject, if I do by opening the lid and pressing the drive button and try any other disc, it will hang.
I thought perhaps this was due to something I had installed, but no, I have two OS loaded, I checked with both and I get the same behaviour. I don't think it has to do with the drive itself, did not flash it and did not record anything recently. Autoplay is disabled. I reinstalled the original drivers that came with the PC, nothing.
    WHY?
    Can someone please help?
    Thanks in advance.

    > What do you mean by "somewhat", did you have the eject problems from the beginning?
    Jadi,
The eject button of the Mega sometimes stopped working but I could simply eject by pushing the button on the drive. Reading the discs was not a problem.
    > Have you tried to unplug the powercord? This will cause the Bluebird controller to reset itself. I can imagine that the BB controller software is not fully compatible with the NEC 2500 although it worked from the beginning.
Actually yes,  I had to unplug a few times to open the box and check if every connection was OK, I booted without the drive and than agin with it to see if anything would change, no result, still hanging.
    ANYONE HAS AN IDEA???
    WHY DOESN'T IT WORK ANYMORE?
    > Something else, how does your MEGA 180 perform with the 30" (!!) LCD screen?
Excellent so far, especially with DVDs (now nix) but it depends how you want to use it, knowing that picture artefacts become more visible with larger sizes.
I am using the MegaPC as a Multimedia center in the living room for everything (including DVD and Divx playback, Sat receiver and Hard Disk recorder, MP3 jukebox, streaming radio)  but the instability of the Mega forced me to keep the standard CE equipment around for back-up.
Dark scenes are a bit the weakspot for LCD vs plasma because of backlight, but brightness is better, and for the rest is great.
Another problem in my setting is deinterlacing with TV content from satellite. I use the Moonlight's Elecard SW decoder. With high motion sequences especially (eg sport) the performance is poor. I am not sure if a good AGP video card would bring about any improvement, I guess is a SW issue still (performance limit?). I tried the ATI AIW 9800 in the past, graphics looked nice, but the TV was not satisfactory, so I use the RF tuner of of the 30"LCD at the moment.
If you consider buying a widescreen display to use with a HTPC, the 300WN5QS is great, it is a monitor with TV fiunction, so has all the setting features you'd expect from a high-end monitor, not the crappy CE settings you find on TV sets.
(I don't mean to do any advertisement here, but if you are interested in specs you can check: http://www.lcddiscount.nl/LCDDiscount.html?url=/Philips-300WN5QS-Zilver-details-thuisbioscoop.html )

  • Mega 180 and Media Center III----looks perfect----is it??

I DON'T want to shell out $1000 for cheap HP/Compaq or whatever which includes Media Center Edition
But I DO like the look and features of Microsoft's Media Center Edition.
In the Manual for the MEGA 180-----Media Center III looks perfect for what I want.
Am thinking of a Mega 180 using onboard video, the MSI TV/Tuner Card, onboard SoundStorm---and a cheap Barton.  I already have 2 x 512 of NVidia recommended PC2700 RAM for use with the onboard and almost all other parts----but by the time I'm done----I'd be shelling out around $400
The manual makes everything look good "on paper"----but I see from this forum their are "issues".
Did/does MSI support the 651 model well??  Bios updates----utility and driver updates??
This thing looks like a tremendous alternative to a Microsoft Media Center Edition overpriced machine.  And I'm willing to do driver updates and Bios updates----heck, I love a challenge----I just don't like a product that lies about what it can really do.
    Worth it----or should I pass.....
    Thanks-----John

I believe that function is only for viewing the videos from the preview window to fullscreen. I don't think it enables/disables "stretch mode" but i'll try that tonight.
if it works i'll post it here. if not ... well .... same thing i guess

  • Mega 180 and MSI FX5200-TD128

Hi all and thanks in advance for any help.
I just bought MEGA 180 a some more things, here is my current config:
    Box - Mega 180
    CPU - Barton 2500+
    Memory - 2x256 - 400Mhz from Phoenix Technologies
Disk - 120 Gigs HD - Seagate Ultraquiet
    DVD Rom - Leadtek Silent
PVR PCI Card - PVR 350 from Hauppage
    Everything works fine.
Now I have an MSI FX5200-TD128 Graphics Card and decided to try it out.
With some difficulty I managed to put it in but now .... the computer simply does not start .. well sort off.
Once I hit the power on button three things can happen:
    * Computer starts but the display is not on, and eventually it locks.
    * Computer starts with some gittery on the screen and it locks
    * Computer starts, I hit the del key but I can't even get into the BIOS.
In either case the OS never boots.
    My question is,
    * Do I need to set something on the BIOS before I install the card such as, increase the AGP voltage or something like that?
    * Can it be that my memory is just BAD for it?
    * Can it be that my AGP slot is just BAD?
    * Do I need to setup the BIOS prior to the operation?
    * Is this just that my MSI card is too power hungry, which I think it strange as it is from MSI, its the latest model of its type?
Please help me, and again thanks in advance.
    Nuno
PS: By the way, my BIOS is V3.30 downloaded two days ago from Live Update

    Hi,
Managed to get it working. Here is what I did in case anyone has the same problem as mine.
    1) Take a memory DIMM out, a let one just stay there. This will get you a memory total of 256 Mgs and your system will now boot.
    2) Get to the BIOS settings.
    3) Choose the option concerning DIMM's and performance (third option I think).
    4) In the third option select Manual. This will allow you to set specific options for the memory.
    5) Select Auto in the option concerning CPU / DIMM transfer rating.
    6) Select High Performance in the 7th or 8th option concerning your DIMM settings.
    7) Save the BIOS
    8) Put the DIMM back in
    9) Start your system and voila it works.
    Best regards,
    Nuno

  • Mega 180 and latest DVD Writer Compatibilty

I will buy a new DVD writer  for my mega. My short list is; NEC ND-3520A, Samsung TS-H552U/BEBN, LITE-ON SOHW-1693S, NEC ND-3540A.
I searched my list in the sticky optical device post but except ND-3540A, I could not find the other options in the list. I guess the post is a little bit older.
Is there anybody who has experience with the DVD writers in my list?

Well I'm using a NEC 3520 and it's working perfectly. No troubles with eject-buttons or whatsoever. Works fine in Hifi-mode too. Except, in Hifi-mode when playing a cd with no gaps between songs (i.e. a live-cd) you loose sound for about half a second before it comes up again. But, I don't think that's a problem of the NEC, but with the Mega itself because I have seen posts about the same issue with different drives.

  • My MEGA 180 Config

    Hi there,
I wanted to share my dream 180 config (i have to push a button to order it) so that you can highlight me some potential issues or problems you may have already encounter.
I particularly have no clue about the power usage and the temperature.
    MSI MEGA 180
    MSI DR8-A Black 8X DVD±RW
Maxtor MaXLine Plus II 250GB 7200RPM 8MB Buffer ATA/133 HDD
Logitech Cordless MX Duo Keyboard & Mouse
    AMD Athlon XP 3000+ 2.16GHz 333MHz/512KB Socket A CPU
    Kingston 2GB KIT DDR333 PC2700 CL2.5 DIMM
    MSI GeForce FX 5900-VTD128 128MB DDR AGP8X VIVO/DVI
About the video card, i'm not sure if it will fit inside ....
Also regarding the TV card, i'm still wondering if i'm going to buy it. I have cablevision at home ans i wonder if a simple cable input is enough.
Thanks in advance for your comments and advices.
    Regards

  • MSI Mega 180 Suddenly died

    Hi!
Last night I was using my MSI Mega 180 as normal, and shut it down after use, and got to bed.
The next day, the machine refused to boot. When I pressed the power-on-button the pc the fan went round once then stopped and it didnt boot.
The HIFI-mode and clock still works, but dosen't start the PC at all. I tried to connect a normal ATX power supply to the machine, and everything was working again (except hifi-mode of course)
Can anybody explain this ? Is the quality of the PSU THAT bad ?
I am VERY dissappointed. I guess i have no warranty, as I have reversed the CPU fans (and some other modifications, like removing the unused HDD-tray).
Where can I get a replacement PSU ? Is it worth it, or should I stay with my "external" ATX 350W (And much cooler and less noise than the orginal MSI MEGA 180 PSU)
The only downsides with the external PSU is :
    1. I have no Linux webserver no more (Took the PSU from there)
    2. No Hifi-mode or clock
    3. Dosen't look as good as the original.

I think all mega 180 units comes with 2 years manufacturers guarantee...
even if it's over 2 years, i have seen someone in this forum said that the psu from msi is only 35 quids?
I think you should try resetting your bios  by jumper to see if that works
