MEGA 865 Deluxe with MSI DR8-A 8x8 DVD±R/±RW Writer

Hi everyone,
I am just about to put this box together, please advice..
Heard any compatibility issue on this one? IE, ejecting problems or loosing functionality in PC or HIFI mode? or any issues at all....
MEGA 865 Deluxe with MSI DR8-A 8x8 DVD±R/±RW Writer
It will be a bummer if I go put this together and it doesnt work properly. That will be money down the tube.
Thanx.

I have the same box and optical device. I have yet to get an audio CD to play completely through in HiFi mode. It will play for 3 to five minutes and then quits, LCD reads No Disk. I can get it to start up again with no problems but it only plays a few minutes at a time.  It works fine in PC mode both in playing Audio CD's and DVDs so I am guessing that my problem lies in Hi Fi circuitry/or wires. I believe you should be able to use the 865 in Hi Fi mode without O/S, Memory, or even a CPU. Good luck.

  • MEGA 865 Problems with XP install....HELP!!

Hi guys, i just bought a MEGA 865 Deluxe and I can't install Windows XP (Sp1)...i have reached the point where i am seriously considering throwing it out of the window (after 4 hours of troubleshooting!!!).
    Specs are: P4 3.0
    Crucial 1gb DDR400
    Maxtor DiamondPlus 9 SATA 160Gb
    Sony DW-G120A Dvd-rw
    Bios v1.3
Ok what happens is that during startup it will identify both HD and DVD...it will start reading the Windows CD, but then stop and try to boot from other sources. The DVD-rw works fine in Hi-Fi mode. I tried using another old CD-ROM i have with no luck. I took out the Maxtor and used my IDE seagate from my other PC...again nothing (btw the XP CD works...tried it in another pc). I have toyed around with all possible combinations in the BIOS...manually resetted to defaults...tried all different combinations for the DVD settings (SL,MA etc)...even moved the DVD to the Primary IDE cable...and still nothing. Searched in this forum, and tried some tips...like Disabling USBs, Changing the SATA to Legacy and so on...and still...guessed right... NOTHING!!
I am pretty desperate for some advice. Any tips to try are welcome, before i start sending stuff back for refund.
    Thanks in advance!

Yeap...i guess you were right kane81. The CD wasn't bootable...since then i obtained a newer XP version that is bootable but guess what my luck had in store. I fired up the pc as usual, and i got a message on the monitor 'no signal'...?? Tried with another monitor...played with the cable in case it wasnt put in good. Nothing. black screen. It seems like the hard disc is working, but i get nothing on the screen. Also in order to turn it off, it doesn't respond anymore to the 'PC' button....need to pull off the plug. It's like the BIOS has been erased or something. Any ideas? Faulty M/board? Should i send it back and get replacement?
From all machines i ever had, the 865 is the best looking one. I am dissapointed all i could do since i bought it is listening to radio

  • Mega 865 probs with 3.3v ...

uhm well ive got a brand new mega 865 and i thought kewl :P i mean it looks sweet and i like the hifi stuff etc etc
well so i started it up and the first day was fine.. second day it suddenly shutdown and stuff.. wel after taking out the power cable and leaving the pc for a while, it worked again and when i looked @ pcalert4 it said that my 3.3v was getting up to 3.9v etc.. and thats the reason why it was crashing..
now my question is obviously how do i stop ik crashing..
    - is it because the power supply is 2 weak? (i dont think so seeing that msi delivers the power supply with the mega barebone)
    - is it the psu ? coz i read about some1 having the same problem with the 3.3v and a mega barebone...
    anyway my pc specs are:
    p4 3.2ghz
    2x 512ddr corsair
    6800 LE
    winxp sp1
thats the most important i think

In fact, disable PC Alert so it dosen't launch when your system boots.  It causes a momentary pause while it is refreshing the system information.  It's fairly noticable, especially if you are gaming, or writing a document.

  • Prospective Mega 865 buyer with a few questions...

I'm looking into upgrading my Home PC, and I really like the small form factor of the Mega 865. My main goal is to have a very quite computer (my current PC has a noisy Maxtor hard drive), and the small form factor is a real plus. Here are a few questions:
    1) How quiet is the Mega 865? Is the power supply fan very quiet?
    2) If I use a Northwood 3.0 GHz CPU, do I need to buy a standard cooling fan or does the Mega 865 have it's own CPU cooling fan system? If so, how quiet is this fan?
    3) What's the highest screen resolution that the Integrated 865G Video can output in True Color?
    4) Can I fill one of the two memory slots with a single 512 MB module, or do I need to fill both slots with a module?
If anyone can help answer these questions, I would greatly appreciate it. Any other comments would also be appreciated!
    Thanks,
    ppcinfo

i don't have a mega 865 personally, but i'll try and answer what i can.
    1) the mega 651 was very quiet under normal loads, you'd only hear the cpu fan whirr faster when the cpu was getting hot. i imagine its the same on other megas.
    2) all the megas come with their own custom designed heatsink and fan, i doubt you'd get anything else to fit. BTW the northwood is probably a better bet than the prescott, as they don't run as hot
    3) i don't know about the mega 865, but i recently built a PC for my mom, based on the Aopen XCCube EY65, which uses the same intel 865g chipset as in the mega 865 (only doesn't support any prescott cpus  ). it runs on her 18.1" tft in 1280x1024 in truecolour mode, but only allows for a max of 16mb shared VGA memory. as she don't play games (she's an architectural glazing designer, using AutoCAD) thats fine for her.
    4) you can just use one stick of RAM if you want, but stick to some good stuff, cheaper generic RAM usually causes problems on MSI mobos
thats my tuppence worth, can any mega 865 users clarify anything for us?

  • MSI Mega 865 Deluxe No Display

My PC has just gone mad in the last couple of days.
After I unplugged the PC from the power cord and plug it back again on Saturday (cos I had some problems with the graphics and sound- sound and graphics suddenly went missing), it does not allow me to reset the time. Not only that, the time on the display has remained at 4:01 overnight. Once again, I thought  unplugging the PC from the power might solve the problem and let me reset the time. But it's gone from bad to worse, there was absolutely nothing displayed on my PC- not the time, not the temperature, nothing whatsoever.
Does any one have similar problems and what's the way to get around it?
My PC is only 2 weeks old and it never seemed to work properly.

What I meant by the Graphics missing is that there were no display on my monitor at all when I was half way playing a game- so does the sound in certain occassions. With the sound problem, rebooting can help to solve the problem but not all the time.
Now, the main problem is that the actual display (where it shows the temperature, clock, etc.) on the machine is completely blank. The machine doesn't seem to be able to detect the on-board sound card either.
    My configurations are as follow:
    O/S: Windows XP1 Build 2600
    CPU: Intel Pentium 4 3.20G-C (800Mhz FSB)
DVD: LG GSA-4120B 12X +/- Dual Layer DVD Burner OEM
    Hard drive: Western Digital 160G 7200RPM SATA-150 (8MB buffer)
    RAM: 1GB KIT DDR PC3200 400Mhz Kingston
    Video card: MSI 256MB FX5500-TD
I somehow wonder if it has anything to do with the muck up that the Live Update did with my BIOS. Apparently, my PC can't detect my HDD after I used the MSI Live Update to update my BIOS and it took some time to get it back to shape.

  • MSI Mega 865 DVDRW Drive

Hello. Can you please tell me which DVD writer I need to buy for my MSI Mega 865. I want to add a DVD writer behind the panel and my third party Sony doesnt open the front panel. Do the MSI drives work OK. Thanks.

    Hi williac10,
Though you are right in asking for a better alternate optical drive here but I think it'll be better if you ask the Mega PCs users in our Mega PCs, SFF PCs Forum .

  • Media Center DVD 'Stutters' on MEGA 865

    Hi
I am an IT professional, but I am a newcomer to the MEGA series PCs.  I bought a MEGA 865 Delux for a 'computer newbie' friend as payment for a favour, and I am in the process of configuring it all now.
    Spec is
MEGA 865 flashed to bios 1.2
MSI DVD Player DR8-A2 BIOS 1.6
    NO TV CARD (yet)
    Win XP PRO SP2
    512MB RAM
Celeron 2.0GHz (yes I know, but I had a new one going spare, it'll do for now)
I have applied ALL latest drivers
I have applied ALL latest BIOS patches
Windows XP is fully patched up to SP2
I am currently running in 1024x764 Truecolour 70Hz mode.
Everything works great, my friend should be really pleased with it  ... except
    MEDIA CENTER III !!!
Now that was kind of the idea of buying the MEGA PC, my friend could use it with the remote control for DVD, Radio etc etc, but when I play a DVD using the media center it 'stutters', the video and sound are interrupted and it really is unwatchable.
Looking at the CPU resource is see that it is strained to 100% utilisation.
If I run the same DVD Movie with PowerDVD (came with the MSI DVD Drive), or even with Windows Media Player, it plays beautifully and the CPU is comfortably down at 40% utilisation.   Unfortunately the remote seems to do nothing for PowerDVD.
Is anybody finding that the Media Center works great on their system? (if so, what's the secret?)
Has anybody else encountered similar problems to mine?
Does anybody know how I could fix the problem so that when I present this great new system to my friend as an expression of my gratitude, it is not 'flawed'?
Please help if you can, I would like to deliver the system in the next couple of days.
    Thanks
    Steve

    Thanks for the advice everyone.
After much searching I found the elusive registry changes and applied them to my system.  Unfortunately these changes made no discernable difference to the DVD playback.
While I appreciate that there are a number of Open Source projects in development (dependant on 'Girder', pay software that still does not appear to FULLY replace the advertised functionality of the Remote/LCD/Radio etc), and also alternative products that I could purchase, I do not feel that I should have to buy these to make my MEGA media center PC play DVDs.
It's not as if the inability to play DVDs is a minor issue in a Media Center.  It's fundamental!!
If it will not work as a media center PC 'as supplied' then it seems to me that I should return it to the retailer and buy a 'Shuttle PC' for much less money.  I could spend the savings (I reckon on about £70) on a better CPU or just pocket the difference.  Features and software that do not work are of little use to anybody.
With all due respect to you all, if everybody who bought the system and had these problems returned it to the store as 'not fit for purpose' then I suspect MSI would have resolved the issue long ago.  It seems to me that end user tolerance has resulted in MSI's indifference.
If I have no fix by Thursday then it's back to the store.
I have mailed MSI Tech Support, hopefully they will come up with something as the system looks great otherwise.
Still open to suggestions that do not include 'break up the CD' or 'buy this other software'.
    Thanks
    Steve

  • New Mega 865 Problems

Really need some help here, something is going horribly wrong.
    Right heres the spec:
Brand new Mega 865 Deluxe version
a 512MB module of Geil PC3500 Golden Dragon Ram
    P4 3Ghz Northwood 800FSB
    Nvidia Geforce 4 Ti4600
Western Digital IDE 8MB Cache 160Gig Hard Drive: set to Master
Nec 8x DVD Double Layer Dual R/RW IDE BLACK Burner OEM: set to Master
I'm trying to install Windows XP Home onto it, I have two legit versions, one with SP1 and one with SP2 and neither of which are working correctly.
The version with only SP1 on it says the partition on the harddrive isn't XP compatible please delete and create a new one (so I do) when I do this I get same message over and over again, never ending cycyle.
The version with SP2 installs only to hard drive fine after a full NTFS format but it gets to the stage where it restarts your PC at the end of the installation where it stays in dos. What it should do is load up into the GUI final part of the installation, it doesn't get this far. Instead i get the message "Disk bot failure, insert system disk and press enter."
As for updating the bios, the whole process seemed really complecated when you can't get into windows to do it through MSI's utility and don't have a floppy disk drive because you have the deluxe version. Also I'm not even sure I can update the bios without windows even installed, I made an emulated boot cd with the dos flashing utility and new beta bios on but that isn't working either.
I have tried changing around jumper settings and bios settings including boot device prioritys etc but it's not getting me anywhere. I had heard good things about this shuttle and don't really want to have to return it but this forum is pretty much my last resort.
    Any help apprechiated, thanks.

I guess rkoppen is right (although I've never dealt with XP home edit, and in my "vanilla" XP pro setup the card reader did not interfere)
On previous OS-es supporting NTFS there always was a chance to select additional 'stroage" devices where to install the system into.
Other thought - when setup proposes to delete/reformat existing partitions, it usually shows the available size (at least that is/was so with NT4 and Win2k, and XP Pro) Is the indicated size anywhere in the neighborhood of the HDD capacity you have? (probably not, if you try to "reformat" an empty card reader )

  • Mega 865 wireless network problem.

    Hi all,
New here and seeking a solution to a specific prob.
Have built a system from with a MSI Mega 865 Delux. P4 Chip, ATI all in wonder graphics/TV card, Maxstor 160 GB hDD.
System is specifically as a home entertainment/ video capture and record.
    Problem with wireless networking.
I have a wireless network with three PCs all with USR wireless cards and a usr 8054 router which actually does little but extend the rance of the network, Internet connection is through host computer on a single channel ISDN line.
When I connect to the network with my Mega 865 (XP TO XP) the connection is massivly slow, in fact pages on the net refuse to load it is that slow.
The 865 is causing the host compiter to drop its connection to the router for about 50 % of the time, I can see its icon flashing red as the connection is dropped and returning to green as it reconnects.
It sounds like an incompatibility issue some where but I can't find anyone else with the same problems.
    Any ideas anyone?
    Thanks, Epirb.

To my knowledge, the SP2 caused trouble for Mega 865 if a certain type of P4 CPU was installed (Prescott?)
That was so because this sort of CPU requires some "alternative" microcode to be loaded into it upon startup.
One published workaround was to replace certain file in the SP2 package with its predecessor from SP1,
another (more solid, IMHO) - to upgrade the BIOS of PC so this revised microcode is loaded with BIOS. At this point in time, I believe, the revised Mega 865 BIOS is available as an official release.
You are right, the issue is only with certain processors; see also (this includes the m-soft workaround too)
    http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;885626
This revised bios is not available IMHO, one of our forum collegues managed to get a beta version of a new bios, which does the trick. If you need it give us a shout.

  • Mega 865, 56K MDC modem module

    Hi Everyone,
I am in the process of deciding to get a SFF box, and came down to 2 choices. I am leaning towards the MEGA 865 Deluxe. I am wondering about the build in modem, I am a winfax user and use it very often.
To Owners of MEGA 865, is this modem fax capable? Can I use winfax or any other pc fax program with it? Thanx for responding.
To MSI Tech Support, if this build in modem is not fax capable, is there any other modules with fax options available? How about 3rd party modules that MSI know about? Please advice, thanx.

    Hi Uforic,
In the manual is mentioned that the modem module is optional, but íf it is present, you can safely assume that it is (win)fax capable. AFAIK there are nowadays no modems manufactured that have no fax capabilities.

  • Mega 865 Duluxe - Graphics card upgrade

Hey there, I have a mega 865 Deluxe and I have just brought an LCD TV.  I am currently using the onboard graphics card, but thinking about adding in a new card that has DVI output.
Can anyone suggest what sort of card i can get away with adding.  I'm gonna use it for the occasional game, watching dvd's and using the LCD TV as my new PC monitor.
    My current set up is:
    Mega 865 Deluxe
    Win XP Pro SP2
    Northwood P4 2.8
    Maxtor 80gig harddrive
    1Gig
Soundblaster 24 bit Live sound card

Thank you. I just picked up an ATI AIW 9800...I read here that a lot of people are using that. I am using the 2.8GHZ Northwood processor, so I hope I don't run into over heating issues

  • MSI Mega 865 TV-out card

I am ordering an MSI 865 Deluxe this week and will use it with my TV. Unfortunately I have been told that the MSI Mega TV-out card will not be available in our country.
Does anyone know or use other brands of PCI TV-out cards with their Mega PC?

I would also recommend a converter, here is an example of what you are looking for.
    http://www.ascent.co.nz/mn-product-spec.asp?pid=108377
More reasons for this are no drivers and Macrovision will work. If you use a gforce and try using the TV out most DVD playing software will stop, this will not happen with a conveter.
The Graphics are not the quickest on the 865 but tend to do the job.

  • Mega PC 865 Delux - Where do I start?

    Hi all,
I just bought a barebones Mega PC 865 Deluxe edition. I wanted something small to go in the cupboard with all the rest of my av equipment and connect up to my Plasma screen either via VGA or Video or both (open to recommendations). It will also be connecting to the speakers via an amp, so it won't need any external speakers.
What I want to know, is where do I start with all of this stuff. I've spent a few days looking around at all of the various options of processors, disks, RAM, video cards and the likes and there are SO many options!
So what I want to know is where do I start? Is there a good mid range configuration. What I mean by that is that I might be playing games and the likes, but it won't be the main use. Working while watching TV (Word, Excel), Browsing the web (via wireless LAN) and streaming audio / video.
So any and all advice appreciated...keep it simple as I've not built a PC before...especially not one this small!
    Thank you!
    Warren

    Welcome to our world ....
Start with the processor, I would say get something around 3 gighz (give or take) which is quite affordeble. If you are going for a prescott, make sure you upgrade your bios to 1.2 or 1.3Beta5. It will run a bit hot otherwise. If going for northwood any version is ok I believe. When I chose mine I let $$$ descide, and the prescott was on sale.
As for Harddisk, I would suggest anything goes but take a serial ata since that is becoming the new standard nowadays.
As for DVD/CD player, there is a special thread where everyone states if their DVD/CD player is working with the mega (there are some issues with some drives in HiFi mode, EVEN if they are MSI)
As for memory, get at least 512 Mb or 1024 Mb if you want to sit cosy. two sticks of DDR400 (a.k.a 3200) will do. Get a a-brand like kingston, samsung or look around on the forums what will work.
As for the GPU (Graphics card), this depends on what you are going to do with it. If you wanna try out at showshifting, and viewing get one with integrated TV tuner. Or use the on-board (some people are quite happy with it) and add a separate PCI tv tuner. If you wanna do hefty gaming (Doom3, Far Cry ... etc) you may want to get an better one. I'm quite happy with my Radeon 9800. Please note; when you want to go for prescott cpu, MSI does not support a full size Graphics adapter (like the 9800), however people found out that it will work. Be wary of power hunger cards, since you only have 250 Watts available.
As for wireless internet, the mega865 has a built-in mini-pci nic (network card). which supports only the 11 Mbps data rate. I think you have to try it out and see how it goes, you can always upgrade to 54 Mbps. I would suggest to get a 54Mbps access point, so you can always upgrade if needed (54Mbps will also work with 11 Mbps)
Let me know if anything above is unclear, or if you have further questions.
    Cheers,
    Raymond
