Mega 865 has problem Prescott cpu

i use mega 865 bios ver 1.20 with  Prescott 3.2 E .
mega bios `PC HEALTH MENU `cpu core V 1.77
Prescott just need 1.4 V
when bios repair for  Prescott

Sounds like they didn't get everything worked out in the BIOS prior to release.  Ever download and install a new point release of something and feel like it hasn't been thoroughly tested?
That's because many point releases are really beta releases.  It's evil in many ways, but it's the way of life for many software vendors/shops.

Have you checked your XP Eventlog, I had a problem like this also and it turned out BITS (Background Intelligent Transfer Service) gave the problem.  (and booted my PC)
I had to upgrade to BITS 2.0 and now I'm running like a charm.

Also, before I assembled my PC I had a look at
http://www.jscustompcs.com/power_supply/ to calculate the wattage needed.
I'm assuming the configuration in your .sig and I'm getting to 265 watts for your configuration with 3.2 prescott . (Hardly any difference with mine)

  • MEGA 865 wireless problem

I cannot not and have never been able to pick up any other wireless networks with my mega 865 mini pci wireless card.  I have 3 access points within 5 metres of the pc and it is like the radio does not work or something.
The device says the radio is enabled, i have checked the antenna and it seems to be connected correctly.
Has anyone experienced this before?? or is the device faulty, or am i missing something....  Thanks

Below is something I posted a while back on the Mega 180. Not sure if it applies to the 865 but your problem sounds similar..
The only other tip I can give is to try connecting with and without MS's wireless zero configuration.  I don't remember how I ended up on my Mega.... but using a variety of computers and wireless cards...sometimes it works great..... but when it doesn't work it really screws up your configuration... so you need to disable it and try using the wireless config utility that comes with the wireless card.
    Good luck....
    ===================APPEND=================================
I've been goofing around for over a week trying to get the Mega 180 built in wireless to connect to my Netgear access point. It could see a Linksys access point in a neighbors place  but not my Netgear when it was 5 feet away.
It turns out that the wireless mini pci card is OEMed from a Taiwan co. called RaLink. The device is the RT2400. I downloaded the Ralink drivers and TA DA..... it worked.
Here is the link to the drivers if anyone else runs into this problem

  • Mega 865 & Pentium 4 Prescott 3.0G

    Hi all,
I'm buying a mega 865 PC, and I have it on order. But while browsing the MSI site I found that the prescott processor is not fully supported (not very clear on the site)
I cannot find if the 3.0 GHz Prescott processor is supported, can anyone tell me if it works ?
Also I found that the Prescott 2.8G is supported, however it states
"OK (Half-Size AGP Card Only)" what does this mean. I'm bying a Sapphire Radeon 9800 Pro, will this fit in ?
    Thanx for any answers.
    Raymond

i think its a power thing
the half size vga cards are low end ones

  • Restart Problem Fix for Mega 865

Just letting people know how I fixed my Mega 865 restart problems
    my quick story
I built my 865 with 512RAM and installed XP MCE2005. The next day I installed a 1 GIG RAM chip and the system would not boot into XP. It would get to the windows boot screen and crash when loading the hard drive drivers.... or somewhere around there. couldnt even get into safe mode. I removed the Radeon 9800 and it booted. oh no could it be the AGP Card?
well I put it back in and tried every thing,
removed the new 1 GIG RAM, same problem
    reset BIOS
    reset to Safe Settings BIOS
    reset to Optimal BIOS
repair XP recovery console, fix MBR ...etc
then I the BIOS I tried dropping the AGP Aperature size from 64MB down to 8MB. It fixed the problem.
I'm guessing the issue is really one of power. the PSU is only 230w and with the extra ram stick, it had problems putting out enough power.
so I dropped the agp aperature down to 8MB (shouldnt matter as the card has 128MB and hopefully shouldnt need system RAM)
I also turned off the serial port (set it to disabled - who uses the serial port anyway)
and disabled the modem and network card (dont need the modem and I'm using the wireless card instead of the ethernet one)
hopefully turn these things off will prevent furthur power issues when running games and stuff.

the prescott core P4s are hot enough as it is, without squeezing a 3.2ghz in there, along with a hot GPU
i would recommend the northwood core P4, as they run cooler and are just as good as prescott P4s as tests have shown
and i would also advise you to search through this forum for topics about mega 180 heat issues; the issues will apply to all mega series, just seems to cause more of a problem with the 180, but most ideas will apply to 865
first thing to check is airflow, make sure that there are no cable looms in front of heatsink, obstructing airflow to the fan. bear in mind too that by default, the fan is already blowing hot air off the AGP card onto the heatsink (yes, poor design by MSI but it can be resolved apparently by "reversing" fan airflow).

  • Mega 865 Lcd Died

Hi I understand that there are some other threads with the same issue, but I would like to post this thread with a clear subject title.
    Here is the problem...
The LCD died after a day of usage. It turns out that the display was frozen, so I turn off the pc and turned off the mains. I then turn on the mains to expect a flashing clock on the front LCD. but nothing. It is black.
The Hi-fi seems to work but using it without the panel is pointless.
So now the system still works, but no front LCD.
There was a firmware patch for the 180 LCD panel that apparently fixes the problem. Is there one for the 865?

Ok it has been several days, there are other users with the same problem. I have contacted MSIs customer support, however it seems they have a long turn around time on their replies.
If the units are defective MSI should say something about it, so far from what I have read, there are no official announcements for the MEGA 865 LCD problems.

  • Mega 865 "No Disc Found" error

I am putting together a Mega 865...installed CPU, HD, memory and MSI DVD/CDRW drive. When I tried to install operating system the drive was not found. I abandoned the attempt at installing OS and switched to HiFi mode. I put in an audio cd and system played fine for about 2 minutes, then quit and LED on front panel said "no disc found"  I naturally checked all the wiring on the drive end, but don't want to take the entire machine apart to check the end on the mother board. If I hit play button again the disct will play again for a few minutes. I have gotten it to play for about 20 minutes at one time, but not one entire CD (and I have tried several). I have also plugged in 2 other generic CD drives with the same results. It doesn't matter what track I start with or which of the 3 drives I use the results are the same.  Is there any reason I would have to have an OS to play a cd in HiFi mode?
    Thanks

Not sure what you were refering to with the ...
lol i sometimes cannot explain things too well!!
I'll take it step by step:
With my bootable XP disc, when i insert it into drive and boot first you see
    Boot From CD...
When the system finds the bootable XP disk it changes to
Boot From CD... Press any key to boot from CD.
    then
Boot from CD... Press any key to boot from CD..
Boot from CD... Press any key to boot from CD...
Boot from CD... Press any key to boot from CD....
obviously after a few seconds if you don't press a key, it will look for next boot device
i would guess that your windows 98 is NOT a bootable CD (is it genuine   )

  • Mega 865 wireless network problem.

    Hi all,
New here and seeking a solution to a specific prob.
Have built a system from with a MSI Mega 865 Delux. P4 Chip, ATI all in wonder graphics/TV card, Maxstor 160 GB hDD.
System is specifically as a home entertainment/ video capture and record.
    Problem with wireless networking.
I have a wireless network with three PCs all with USR wireless cards and a usr 8054 router which actually does little but extend the rance of the network, Internet connection is through host computer on a single channel ISDN line.
When I connect to the network with my Mega 865 (XP TO XP) the connection is massivly slow, in fact pages on the net refuse to load it is that slow.
The 865 is causing the host compiter to drop its connection to the router for about 50 % of the time, I can see its icon flashing red as the connection is dropped and returning to green as it reconnects.
It sounds like an incompatibility issue some where but I can't find anyone else with the same problems.
    Any ideas anyone?
    Thanks, Epirb.

To my knowledge, the SP2 caused trouble for Mega 865 if a certain type of P4 CPU was installed (Prescott?)
That was so because this sort of CPU requires some "alternative" microcode to be loaded into it upon startup.
One published workaround was to replace certain file in the SP2 package with its predecessor from SP1,
another (more solid, IMHO) - to upgrade the BIOS of PC so this revised microcode is loaded with BIOS. At this point in time, I believe, the revised Mega 865 BIOS is available as an official release.
You are right, the issue is only with certain processors; see also (this includes the m-soft workaround too)
    http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;885626
This revised bios is not available IMHO, one of our forum collegues managed to get a beta version of a new bios, which does the trick. If you need it give us a shout.

  • MEGA 865 Fan Control Problems using suspend/hibernate

I'm still having problems with the MEGA 865 CPU fan speed going to MAX after I come back from suspend or hibernate until a reboot of the system.
    This is super annoying.
MSI tech support sent me a BIOS they thought might solve the problem... but it's OLDER than the one on the web site, PLUS it doesn't fix the problem
When will MSI look into this problem? When will a real fix be available? :(

MSI sent me an updated 1.1 BIOS which actually fixes this problem. Unfortunately when I now resume from hibernate or standby the computer is so slow I have to reboot it - sort of defeats the point don't you think!
As for a response from Tech support. Well I might aswell get some

Mega 865 - HiFi Button problems.

  • MEGA 865 Big Display problem

    Hi,
i get my new MEGA 865 last Week, but i have a big Problem with it, every time i unplug and plug the Power Cable, the Display on the front is off.
The only way to bring the Display back to live is to unplug and plug the Display Cable inside the Barebone from the mainboard. This cant be right, does everyone have the same Problem ??????
Please write, if you have the same problem or not.
    Thanks
    Cooler

The information came from MSI Tech support.
I also cannot believe that they sell a Multimedia PC with the MSI Media Suite package that just doesn't work. Any updates? No. Nothing. The MSI Media Suite is meant to be one of the reasons for it costing more than the other MEGA's.
Generally as a rule, I hardly ever install anything from the manufacturers CD supplied with a system. Half the time they are just rubbish apps/utils that I hardly use. I don't really care what speed my Processor/FSB is running at - it's running and it is not below its spec, that's fine by me. My first stop is always the web site for the most current drivers and utils that are necessary.
Obviously PC Alert4 is proving the exception here. It seems to me (I have no confirmation) that PC Alert as supplied on the CD, has API's / DLL's added to take care of the LCD display, and these have not been checked/thought of in a subsequent "standard" version.
I am also interested in seeing how I could control / program the LCD display. I seem to remember someone saying that WinXP Media Center can also change the LCD Display, this hints at either a special driver or an API in XP to get to its settings. I'll try dig a little deeper when I have a spare moment unless anyone already knows the answer.

  • MEGA 865 CD playback problem (in HiFi mode)

    Hi, fellow MEGA PC owners
I have a problem with playing my CDs on MEGA 865 in HiFi mode. It recognizes the CD, plays the first track or two, then stops playing, displays SEARCHING message for a ten seconds or so and then switches to NODISC. When I press Eject button on the box or remote, it switches back to SEARCHING and shows the number of tracks on CD.
The same problem is with the MP3 playback. It plays several MP3s ok and then switches to SEARCHING and NODISC.
Does anyone else has this problem? Any idea on what could be wrong? I checked all Slave/Master jumpers, all are ok, the cd drive is recognized by the BIOS.
    My configuration is:
MSI MEGA 865, P4 3.0 GHz Northwood, 1 Gb PC3200 RAM, NEC 2500A DVD burner.

    Hey JavaDuke!
I've got the exact same problem with my Mega180, also running a NEC 2500A! And it is starting to get very annoying...
I can play cd's for hours without any problems, when suddenly it stops in the middle of a track, displaying the NODISC message. Doesn't matter whether I use original cd's or copied ones, and the same disc can play through perfectly one day and halt several times the next. I've been thinking about replacing the NEC 2500 with something else but haven't got round to it as yet, however the post in the thread mentioned above states that different drives still produced the same error, so it's probably the bluebird chip that is faulty.
The mentioned thread doesn't really focus on our problem though as it mostly evolves around boot problems, so I don't see any problem with starting a new thread dedicated to this problem.
I might try the newer firmware, although there is no official word from MSI that this problem even exists, and I therefore doubt that it is solved. Not many people seem to have this particular problem either, or it appears so seldom that they choose to ignore it (as I have done for some time now).
Please report back if you solve this one!

  • 3.0 Ghz Prescott+Mega 865+What AGP Card?

    First, sorry for my english.
This week Ill get a Mega 865 + 3.0 Ghz PRESCOTT + 160 GB SATA HD, and I think to buy a FX5900 AGP card; but it seems that prescott processors requires half height agp card... Why? energy prob? if yes, can I replace the Mega 865 original power suply?
And about the HD and his 160 GB, can I will use it until I flash the BIOS to secure the prescott support and the HD size bigger than 120 GB?
I dont want to find a comp that dont recognize CPU+HD!!!!
    All help is wellcome, thx.

Don't you wonder if people cannot press a search button ?
    A simple search on prescott 865 agp yielded  5 results among which ;
Why half size AGP card with Prescott CPU?
    Anyway
Half-height cards is probably a power issue, check around on the forum on peoples signatures to see what will work. Full height cards do work.
