MEGA 865 New Build Issues

Hello All,
I am building up an 865 system. I've searched the forum but haven't found my exact problems. I have noticed two issues before even installing the OS! The first is CD/MP3 playback in Hi-Fi mode is awful, with playback "studdering" every 3-4 seconds, radio playback is fine. The second is PC mode won't detect my SATA drive (in BIOS/Post) if I have previously been in Hi-Fi mode? The only way I have been able to get the system to recognize my SATA drive is to unplug the system for awhile then enter PC mode. If I go to Hi-Fi and then back to PC mode it won't see it any more. My configuration is MEGA 865 w/Bios 1.1, P4-3.2Ghz (Northwood), Pioneer AO8XL Dual Layer DVD Burner, Maxtor 250Gb SATA HDD, 512Mb Crucial PC400 Memory. Will be installing Win XP Pro SP1 once I get the HDD detected reliably.
Thank,
Chris

ok ok, heres another great post for non-techi's (pardon me if u are indeed a technical wizz )

  • 2008 Upgrade vs New Build Issue

I have two servers - Both HP's. One crashed and we rebuilt the system as a Windows 2008 Standard 32bit. Another system was a 2003 Standard 32bit and we performed a system upgrade to Windows 2008 Standard 32bit. Both servers are running with the latest updates
and service packs.  The new build is working exactly as expected. The Upgrade is having issues. We are finding  things that did not carry over in the upgrade process (Group Policy Management not installed, some AD changes, drivers, etc) but
the process is tedious fraught with potential misses/error.
I would really like to export a complete system report from both servers and compare the results to try and find other items the upgrade failed to process correctly.
After much reading, powershell was a consistent theme but I could not get it working in 32bit environment.
Does anyone have a recommendation for how to complete this? Third party software or internal reporting we can use?
Not a server guy so please be gentle if this is an easy question.
Thanks in advance for your help.

    Hello,
which server roles are you talking about in detail on each hardware?
Are both machines DCs? If yes in-place upgrades are not a good idea for DCs, every admin will suggest against it, even it is full supported from Microsoft. Instead of looking for what is going wrong with comparing the 2 machines, you should think
about using the support tools for DCs and check the output or let us here have a look into the files.
    ipconfig /all >c:\ipconfig.log [from each DC/DNS Server]
    dcdiag /v /c /d /e /s:dcname >c:\dcdiag.log
repadmin /showrepl dc* /verbose /all /intersite >c:\repl.log  ["dc* is a place holder for the starting name of the DCs if they all begin the same (if more then one DC exists)]
    dnslint /ad /s "DCipaddress" (http://support.microsoft.com/kb/321045)
    ADREPLSTATUS
http://www.microsoft.com/en-us/download/details.aspx?id=30005 can also be exported to file.
As the output will become large, DON'T post them into the thread, please use Windows OneDrive (https://onedrive.live.com) [with open access!]
and add the link from it here. Also the /e in dcdiag scans the complete forest, so better run it on COB.

  • New Build Issue - Can't enter BIOS with P35 Neo-F Motherboard

    Hello,
I've just built a PC using the components in my sig. This is what happens when I power up my PC:
1.The power LED lights up on the case.
2.The fans in the power supply and, the graphics card, and the CPU start up.
3.I'm not sure if the hard disk starts up. I don't see it's LED light up on the case.
4.The screen goes black then displays a message from the graphics card's BIOS. Just reporting it's specs.
5.The motherboard displays it's splash screen, inviting me to press <TAB> to switch to POST or <DEL> to enter BIOS setup.
6.Then I hear a single beep from the PC internal speaker.
When I press <TAB> or <DEL>, nothing happens.
I have read about BIOS incompatibilities with new chips but according to the MSI site, the most current version for model number 7360 is 1.7 and it lists the E8500 next to it (http://global.msi.eu/index.php?func=prodcpu2&prod_no=1215&maincat_no=1#menu), so I assume compatibility is not an issue. So, why can't I access the BIOS?
    Thanks for any help.

Would the CPU need to be compatible with both versions of the BIOS?
It needs to be compatible with your current BIOS Version. If it is, it will be compatible with all Versions released after that automatically.

Should I give the shop a copy of the BIOS and the forum tool for flashing the BIOS?
Yes, you should provide them with a copy of the BIOS.  The Forum Flashing tool will only work, if you have an operating system installed, so unless you let the people in the computer shop install a Windows based OS for you, they can't do anything with that application.

Is this the MB you bought? If so then there's not much we can do to help you as it is an OEM board made for some PC manufacturer and does not have an MSI BIOS. Neither MSI nor this forum offer support for non-retail OEM products like that.

  • Things to know before (and after) building a Mega 865

As I am seeing a lot of the same questions regarding the Mega 865 I created this document,
    29-Oct-2004 Added Northwood benefits
29-Oct-2004 Emphasized NOT to use live update for bios update
    Processors in general
Start with the processor, I would say get something around 3 gighz (give or take) which is quite affordeble. If you are going for a prescott, make sure you upgrade your bios to 1.3 (see below). It will run a bit hot (understatement) otherwise.
    If going for northwood any version is ok I believe. When I chose mine I let $$$ descide, and the prescott was on sale. (If I would buy a CPU for the Mega again, I would most likely go for a Northwood this time). Before buying your processor make sure your processor is supported, you can find the supported processors here;
    http://cweb.msi.com.tw/program/products/slim_pc/slm/pro_slm_cpu_support_detail.php?UID=547&kind=4
    Harddisk
As for Harddisk, I would suggest anything goes but take a serial ata since that is becoming the new standard nowadays.
When buying a HD larger than 130 Gig, make sure you install from a Windows XP SP1 CD (or higher) or divide your HD in smaller pieces. Otherwise you will not get a bigger partition than 130 Gigs.
    DVD/CDROM
As for DVD/CD player, there is a special thread (see below) where everyone states if their DVD/CD player is working with the mega (there are some issues with some drives in HiFi mode, EVEN if they are MSI)
Mega PC barebones optical drive compatibility list
    Memory
As for memory, get at least 512 Mb or 1024 Mb if you want to sit cosy. two sticks of DDR400 (a.k.a 3200) will do. Get a a-brand like Kingston, Samsung or look around on the forums what will work.
    Installing Windows XP
Before installing Windows disable your USB devices, if you fail to do this you run the chance of not installing Windows XP on your C: drive (harddisk) and this will cause you trouble later on. After installation is complete you may enable them again.
Prescott processors & full size AGP cards
As for the GPU (Graphics card), this depends on what you are going to do with it. If you wanna try out at showshifting, and viewing get one with integrated TV tuner. Or use the on-board (some people are quite happy with it) and add a separate PCI tv tuner. If you wanna do hefty gaming (Doom3, Far Cry ... etc) you may want to get an better one. I'm quite happy with my Radeon 9800.
Please note; According to MSI, Prescott processors in combination with full-size AGP (add-in) cards are not supported. This is most likely a power issue since the full-size cards use a lot of power to run. Some forum members, stuborn as they are, are running with a full-size card.
Also note that you are installing a full-size card on your own risk in combination with a Prescott processor.
    To calculate your estimated power supply take a look here;
    http://www.jscustompcs.com/power_supply/
The following graphics cards seem to be working (please add to this thread if you have tested a full-size card with a Prescott processor so I can add it to this document)
    Club3D Radeon AIW 9800 PRO
    ATI Radeon ALL-IN-WONDER 9600 XT
    ATI Radeon 9800 SE
    AOPEN Aeolus 5900XT 128 Mb
    Wise words from Stu:
If you do not want to take chances, go with a Northwood processor. Apperantly there is little perfomance difference between a Northwood and a Prescott processor, and the Northwood runs slightly cooler too.
Windows XP Service Pack 2 & Bios Update
When installing Windows XP with SP2 make sure you have the latest Bios version loaded (1.3) or install a Microsoft work-around fix. SP2 will not install without it, and you will have a hard time getting your system to work.
    The Microsoft work-around fix can be found here;
    http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;885626
    The latest bios version can be downloaded here;
    http://www.msi.com.tw/program/support/bios/bos/spt_bos_detail.php?UID=547&kind=4
    To install the latest bios, I would advise against using live-update. Use one of the following options instead;
    1) Burn a bootable CD-Rom also containing the bios and flash software, (note some of the original Win98 CD's are bootable to MS-DOS prompt)
    2) Create a bootable USB-memory key
--- Download the HP util to create one
    --- http://h18007.www1.hp.com/support/files/hpcpqdt/us/download/20306.html
--- Then create a bootable floppy on an other system or download from
    --- http://www.allbootdisks.com/
    --- (I used the Win98SE No ramdrive )
--- Then use the HP tool (on an system with an floppy drive) and enter a: as the source for booting,
--- and use the above created floppy.
--- Then copy the rest of the files from the a:\ drive (like autoexec.bat, config.sys etc) to the memory key.
--- ... and ... voila one bootable USB
--- make sure in the bios that the boot order of the USB key is before the Harddisk and your set to go.
    3) Attach a floppy drive to the Mega 865
    Bios update failure
Some people still manage to goof-up their bios, by doing the bios update from windows (winflash, live-update). I think there is only one road to travel when this happens, you have to attach a floppy drive to your mega. Then follow the following instructions (Award bios)
    http://www.msi.com.tw/html/support/bios/note/boot.htm
    Good luck !
    PC-Alert
Do not use the PC-Alert version from the MSI website as this does not work together with your Mega 865, instead only use the one on the CD-Rom that was supplied. In general even the supplied PC-Alert has caused a lot of grief (Taking up resources, reboot problems ... etc). If you choose to install PC-Alert, at least remove it from your start-up folder where it is installed. You can always start it manually from the MSI menu in your Start menu.
    A good alternative to Pc-Alert is Speedfan, this program should be able to spot your 2 temeperature sensored CPU fans. You can then connect these fans to the CPU temperature sensor and be able to tweak the RPM's according to your need. Speedfan 4.17 can be found here;
    http://www.almico.com/speedfan417.exe
    Temperatures
As these tiny PC's have very little space, it is quite normal for them to run a bit hot. Do not be alarmed to see CPU temperatures around 60-65 degrees when running on load (depending on your processor of course).
    Wireless Network adapter
As for wireless internet, the mega865 has a built-in mini-pci nic (network card). which supports only the 11 Mbps data rate. I think you have to try it out and see how it goes, you can always upgrade to 54 Mbps. I would suggest to get a 54Mbps access point, so you can always upgrade if needed (54Mbps will also work with 11 Mbps) Some forum members have succesfully replaced their Wireless Network adapters with a 54Mbps one. The following network adapters seem to be working;(please add to this thread if you have tested a wireless 54Mbps network adapter so I will add it to this document)
    Intel PRO/Wireless BG Network Adapter
    6 Channel sound
I recently bought a 5.1 set from Soundblaster. You can connect the 3 connectors to the back of your Mega, then in the Sound util set it up for 5.1 surround sound and you are ready to go. Definately worth it !
    Reboot problems
When you run into problems when the Mega reboots suddenly, watch out for a couple of things.
Always check your event/log viewer. It is in your configuration management, but the easiest way to start it is to enter the following in your Run or Command line entry
    eventvwr /s
Check if you see red-dots in your application section or system section. Google the problems before dropping them on the forum ! (As most problems are not Mega related IMHO)
One problem I had was caused by BITS 1.5, I had to upgrade to BITS 2.0. (I think it was recently released by Microsoft-Update but I mention it anyway). Bits 1.5 caused my Mega to reboot.
    LCD Display / Sound problems
If you have any problems where your front LCD display is not working or your on-board sound is 'missing' first try unplugging your mega from the power outlet (so completely powering down) for 2 minutes. If you still have problems, drop them on this forum.
    LCD API ?
Alas, no external programs are available to 'drive' your LCD display. Nor will MSI release an API/Blue print on how to control it.
If you find anything missing here or have additional tips, please add them to this thread and I will update this document.
Good luck with your Mega !
    Raymond

    rkoppen i salute you
a truly glorious summing up of the main points asked about the Mega 865 in particular, although many points will invariably refer also to the other Mega series
if i can add my tuppence worth, anyone considering going for a powerful graphics card can always shy away from the prescott
i was reading an article just when the prescott core cpus came out and the review basically said that there wasn't really much performance wise between the new prescott and the older Northwood cores.
obviously newer prescotts have higher clock speeds now (3.2? 3.4??), but surely a 2.8ghz CPU is still going to be powerful enough to play the latest games!! (in conjunction with a top graphics card obviously)
is the extra temp increase surely worth the extra couple of hundred mhz?

  • Openreach Issue with New Build

I'm currently a BT customer (and up until now very happy) and am about to move house to a new build site in Worcester. I checked the broadband speed for the postcode and all is good, and infinity is available. However when I put in my exact house number, it is not available.
Just to clarify, the build cycle is almost complete. Only 2 houses are still being built and almost all of the houses are now sold and lived in. The estate is basically a circle with my new house is in a cul-de-sac in the centre.
When I go to search for the house next door, it can have superfast broadband and the previous house on the estate I was considering which is in a similar position to mine (i.e. built, ready and vacant) is also fine.
Spoke to BT about the house move and they have basically confirmed that I can't get infinity. The best they can suggest is that I move, downgrade and then wait for my house to be upgraded.
I'm convinced that the estate will be served by the same cabinet and it's clear that it has been upgraded. It is also clear that the builder would not have put in anything different for my new house as pposed to the others on the estate. I cannot believe that there is a reason why it superfast broadband shouldn't be available.
I am also convinced that it isn't about waiting for the roll out to get to me if the whole estate can get infiity and we cannot.
My biggest worry is that if I don't get it resolved before I move in, it won't get looked at after. I am sure the infrastructure is all there but that somewhere, someone hasn't done somethign they ought to have done.
I got through to a technical support at BT who have suggested after moving in, I wait 48 hours for a normalisation to occur (although they are baffled why another empty house can have it and mine cannot) and suggested that I am free to cancel after 14 days if I cannot get what I want.
But as the issue is more likely with openreach than BT, cancelling with BT isn't going to make much difference as the issue seems to be with the network backbone. I suspect the hosue just hasn't been registered on a system so it comes back saying it's not available when it is.
So basically, I just wanted to ask if anyone else had any other ideas as to what I could do to get this sorted? Broadband is important for my ability to work from home and my family like to do a lot of netflix streaming and moving from somewhere where we get 60 Mb to 6Mb is going to be extremely annoying.
    Thanks

    Hi SunTzu,
Welcome to the community forum and thanks for posting!
Sorry for the mix up about BT Infinity being available at your new house.  It's definitely a strange one as other houses in your area can get it and they'd be connected to the same cab as you.
I don't want to speculate as to why it's saying you can't have it but if you send your details over I'll find out for you.  Click on my username and under the "about me" section of my profile you'll see the link to get in touch with us.

  • Mega 865 Pro and Nlite - SCM Issues

Hello, I have just got a Mega 865 Pro and have installed Windows XP on the system using nlite http://www.nliteos.com to strip windows down to the bare minimum, the boot times are great and it goes in to and out of hibernation is seconds, the problem is that I have stripped out one component that allows the System Control Manager to perform properly, my front LED display stays blank, even if I fire up the Intervideo Hometheatre it does nothing and all the front buttons do not respond. Everything else runs fine though
Has anyone tried out nlite and does anyone know which component of windows I've removed that I should have left in?
    Thanks
    Niblet

I'll try installing the new SCM program tonight, though the original ones that came on the disc didn't work (they did on a standard install of XP that I did)
    I'll post my findings later.

  • Building mega 865 pro pc...

    hey..
i've just bought my brand new mega 865 pro and havn't got a clue what to put inside it..
i think i'll go for the pentium 4 3.0ghz.. but after that, i'm not sure what is compatible with it..
need 512mb ram.. basic stuff (what's compatible??)
don't need a gfx card or sound card..
would need about a 200gig hd.. (should i get SATA?.. what's the difference?)
my biggest worry is the dvd-rw and tv card as i heard many are not compatible...
i would like a basic tv card that can take advantage of all of the built in msi features.. can anybody recommend one?
    thanks,
    all help appreciated,
    scrappy.

you can't use high density ram in the 865 PRO - it wont boot.
SATA is the way of the future, might as well go for it. the only real difference at this stage is that the SATA cable is smaller, thinner and better for air flow. (I removed my extra IDE cable as I'm using SATA)
You shouldnt have any problems with DVD-RW.
As for the TV card, go digital. forget the MSI TV card that works with the 865  it only does analog. Forget about instant on too. its crap, just use hibernate or S3 standby, it will turn your pc on just as fast.

  • New Mega 865 Problems

Really need some help here, something is going horribly wrong.
    Right heres the spec:
Brand new Mega 865 Deluxe version
a 512MB module of Geil PC3500 Golden Dragon Ram
    P4 3Ghz Northwood 800FSB
    Nvidia Geforce 4 Ti4600
Western Digital IDE 8MB Cache 160Gig Hard Drive: set to Master
Nec 8x DVD Double Layer Dual R/RW IDE BLACK Burner OEM: set to Master
I'm trying to install Windows XP Home onto it, I have two legit versions, one with SP1 and one with SP2 and neither of which are working correctly.
The version with only SP1 on it says the partition on the harddrive isn't XP compatible please delete and create a new one (so I do) when I do this I get same message over and over again, never ending cycyle.
The version with SP2 installs only to hard drive fine after a full NTFS format but it gets to the stage where it restarts your PC at the end of the installation where it stays in dos. What it should do is load up into the GUI final part of the installation, it doesn't get this far. Instead i get the message "Disk bot failure, insert system disk and press enter."
As for updating the bios, the whole process seemed really complecated when you can't get into windows to do it through MSI's utility and don't have a floppy disk drive because you have the deluxe version. Also I'm not even sure I can update the bios without windows even installed, I made an emulated boot cd with the dos flashing utility and new beta bios on but that isn't working either.
I have tried changing around jumper settings and bios settings including boot device prioritys etc but it's not getting me anywhere. I had heard good things about this shuttle and don't really want to have to return it but this forum is pretty much my last resort.
    Any help apprechiated, thanks.

I guess rkoppen is right (although I've never dealt with XP home edit, and in my "vanilla" XP pro setup the card reader did not interfere)
On previous OS-es supporting NTFS there always was a chance to select additional 'stroage" devices where to install the system into.
Other thought - when setup proposes to delete/reformat existing partitions, it usually shows the available size (at least that is/was so with NT4 and Win2k, and XP Pro) Is the indicated size anywhere in the neighborhood of the HDD capacity you have? (probably not, if you try to "reformat" an empty card reader )

  • Mega 865 Issues

I'm having a couple of issues with the Mega 865-based PC that I just built and I'm hoping some people here can answer a couple of my questions. If interested, system specs are at the bottom.
    1. I can not get MSI's Media Center III to run in any stable form. Typically after I install it and reboot I will try to start the program and it will crash before anything is even displayed on the screen. Furthermore, this freezes the display on the front of the computer itself and the only way I've found to reset this is to shut the computer down and unplug it for a little while. This will happen regardless of how many times I re-install the program.
    2. When I start the computer after having not used it for a while it will make it as far as loading the user login screen in Windows XP and then restart. After trying to start it normally or in safe mode enough times it will finally load Windows propperly and continue to work well. I can even shut it off, unplug it, and turn it back on without any problems. This only happens if it's been sitting off for an extended period of time. (several hours)
Other than these two issues the system has worked flawlessly for me. Hi-Fi mode works well and once it starts the system is stable under load dispite fairly hight CPU temperatures. If anyone has any ideas on how I might be able to get around these problems please let me know and thanks in advance.

    ATI Radeon 9800 Pro
    Samsung 7.2k RPM 160gb HDD
    MSI CD-RW/DVD Combo Drive 52x24x52x16

Had the same issue with mine when I started. The crash of the MMCIII is due to some writing issue of the program to the LCD screen and once the screen is upset then you need to unplug the PC to clear it. I started getting these issues after I used live update from the web, I think I downloaded a bad version of PCalert. Anyway in the long run I formated and only used the versions on the CD and it all worked fine. Oh and if your wondering about the performance of MMCIII, it doesn't get better.

  • New Build House Issues

    Good evening all.
I have come on here as a last means of trying to get my phone line sorted out.  The story is very long, but I will give a (believe it or not) shortened version.
Way back on Feb 14th, I moved into my new build house.  I phoned BT a couple of days before, who arranged for the service at my old house to stop and for a phone line to be fitted at my new property. The appointment was booked for late Feb.  I took a day off work for the appointment, and nobody turned up.  I phoned BT who said that some cabling work was required, and they would get in touch again.  The next appointment was booked for 20th March.  Another day booked off work, another appointment where no engineer turned up.
As you can imagine, I was not too happy at having booked two days off work for no reason at all.  By this time more neighbours had started moving, and realised there were problems with BT also.  Apparently, there was a 90 degree bend in some cabling work that was causing issues.  They had applied to the council for road works to go ahead, but the process would take at least 3 weeks.  During this period, my neighbour took to twitter to complain.  He swiftly received a phone call from BT, who promised a ‘viper escalation’ to the case.
On 2nd May, BT sent a text saying ‘…we will contact you on 1/7/2014 by 8pm to discuss the delay in activation of your services...’  I confirmed this with a couple of separate people within the ‘Order Management Team’.  However, my neighbour who now had a dedicated person at BT looking into his account (due to the fact he had taken to Twitter) said that everything should be complete early June.   On the 15th May I received a text saying We've placed your order (reference xxxxxxxx) which will be complete on (30/5/2014).
So I called BT who had no idea about this text, and gave me absolute assurance that the text was a mistake.  An engineer then turned up on my doorstep completely unannounced a few days later, and fitted a phone line.  Fortunately my wife was in at the time to give them access.  I called BT and asked for an update on my order (not telling them an engineer had turned up).  They confirmed that I would hear nothing until 2nd July.  When I told them I now had a phone line installed and an engineer had been round, they didn’t know what to say.  My neighbour had mentioned this 90 degree bend to the engineer, but they confirmed that this had been fixed weeks ago (he had worked on it himself).
After many, many phone calls with BT they finally confirmed that an engineer would do some external line work on Monday 2nd June.  Then on 5th June, and engineer would be round to finally activate the line.   This was booked for the same day as 2 of my neighbours (who had moved in 2 months after me).  It was an am appointment, and my neighbour said they would let an engineer in to my house if they turned up before 1030. (I took a day off work, and took the opportunity to visit the bank).  On returning home, my neighbour met me and informed me that the engineer had sorted out their phone line, as well as another neighbours.  This involved approximately 10 minutes work in each house.  However, my house was not on the job list and therefore he wouldn’t activate the line.  My neighbour asked the engineer if they could phone their boss or company number to ask if my line could be activated, as they were there with all the equipment and it was only a 10 minute job.  The engineer refused, saying it was pointless – a case of ‘computer says no.’  That very morning I had received a text from BT saying my line had been activated.  As soon as my neighbour told me that no engineer had been into my house, I knew it would be impossible for the text message I had received to be true.  Sure enough my line was, and still is dead.
The ‘Order Management Team’ now refuses to deal with me, because my line has been put on to their system as being active.  So I am now dealing with the faults team.  They want to send an engineer out on a week day to fix a ‘fault’ with my line.  I pointed out that I have already taken 3 days off work, and have no more days left to take this year.  They are ‘sorry that I feel this way’, but there is nothing they can do.  They refuse to send an engineer out on a Saturday, again, ‘computer says no’.  They also refuse to send an engineer out at 1730 when I get back from work… ‘computer says appointments are between 1300 – 1800.’  Try to complain?  ‘We have logged your call as a complaint, which will be reviewed at some point.  We have no complaints department.’
In conclusion, an astonishing lack of communication between departments at BT has resulted in me wasting 3 of my precious days off work (I have my first baby coming along in September, and would have preferred these 3 days with them).  My neighbours who moved in 2 months after me have lines and internet, I don’t.  And I have nobody to complain to.  This is the shortened version of my story; the long one involves several managers promising to ring back but not bothering.
I am hoping that someone at BT somewhere reads this and contacts me to solve this issue shortly.  For anyone moving into a new build house: good luck.

    Hi Frustartedphoneless,
I am very sorry that an engineer did not appear, this is unacceptable.  I can see that Olga is dealing with your case.  Olga is out of the office for a couple of days so I believe Robbie is looking after your fault in her absence, I have dropped Robbie an email and asked him to pick this up as priority.
Robbie will be in the office tomorrow so you will hear from us then.
Again I am so sorry that we have let you down again.
    Cheers

  • HELP! My new Mega 865 Problem

Hi, It would be great if anyone can help me with this:
I am using MEGA 865 + P4 Prescott 3.2E + XP SP2. When I browse internet or browse my computer, the windows always close down. And I found some infomation in the XP Event viewer with event ID 1002. (The shell was stopped and then restarted. By default, the shell is explorer.exe).
    It seems like explorer.exe restarted.
    Thank you for your help!

    And sometimes the pc reboot
    aah, now you tell us
right-click on My Computer, then navigate through Properties > Advanced > System Startup & Recovery, Settings > System Failure, untick Automatically restart. now next time your PC "reboot", it will show the STOP screen instead (also Known as the BSOD - "Blue Screen Of Death")
post any error message it shows, any device driver failures, and any STOP error codes it displays
as for your P4 3.2 prescott, i have seen a couple of users with 3.2s, maybe if SilenTYL drops through he might be able to confirm, as he also is running a 3.2ghz, but maybe not a prescott
though if the CPU is detected at startup by BIOS correctly, then that may not be the issue, but the issue of overheating could be, or even bad memory...

  • Media Center DVD 'Stutters' on MEGA 865

    Hi
I am an IT professional, but I am a newcomer to the MEGA series PCs.  I bought a MEGA 865 Delux for a 'computer newbie' friend as payment for a favour, and I am in the process of configuring it all now.
    Spec is
MEGA 865 flashed to bios 1.2
MSI DVD Player DR8-A2 BIOS 1.6
    NO TV CARD (yet)
    Win XP PRO SP2
    512MB RAM
Celeron 2.0GHz (yes I know, but I had a new one going spare, it'll do for now)
I have applied ALL latest drivers
I have applied ALL latest BIOS patches
Windows XP is fully patched up to SP2
I am currently running in 1024x764 Truecolour 70Hz mode.
Everything works great, my friend should be really pleased with it  ... except
    MEDIA CENTER III !!!
Now that was kind of the idea of buying the MEGA PC, my friend could use it with the remote control for DVD, Radio etc etc, but when I play a DVD using the media center it 'stutters', the video and sound are interrupted and it really is unwatchable.
Looking at the CPU resource is see that it is strained to 100% utilisation.
If I run the same DVD Movie with PowerDVD (came with the MSI DVD Drive), or even with Windows Media Player, it plays beautifully and the CPU is comfortably down at 40% utilisation.   Unfortunately the remote seems to do nothing for PowerDVD.
Is anybody finding that the Media Center works great on their system? (if so, what's the secret?)
Has anybody else encountered similar problems to mine?
Does anybody know how I could fix the problem so that when I present this great new system to my friend as an expression of my gratitude, it is not 'flawed'?
Please help if you can, I would like to deliver the system in the next couple of days.
    Thanks
    Steve

    Thanks for the advice everyone.
After much searching I found the elusive registry changes and applied them to my system.  Unfortunately these changes made no discernable difference to the DVD playback.
While I appreciate that there are a number of Open Source projects in development (dependant on 'Girder', pay software that still does not appear to FULLY replace the advertised functionality of the Remote/LCD/Radio etc), and also alternative products that I could purchase, I do not feel that I should have to buy these to make my MEGA media center PC play DVDs.
It's not as if the inability to play DVDs is a minor issue in a Media Center.  It's fundamental!!
If it will not work as a media center PC 'as supplied' then it seems to me that I should return it to the retailer and buy a 'Shuttle PC' for much less money.  I could spend the savings (I reckon on about £70) on a better CPU or just pocket the difference.  Features and software that do not work are of little use to anybody.
With all due respect to you all, if everybody who bought the system and had these problems returned it to the store as 'not fit for purpose' then I suspect MSI would have resolved the issue long ago.  It seems to me that end user tolerance has resulted in MSI's indifference.
If I have no fix by Thursday then it's back to the store.
I have mailed MSI Tech Support, hopefully they will come up with something as the system looks great otherwise.
Still open to suggestions that do not include 'break up the CD' or 'buy this other software'.
    Thanks
    Steve
