MEGA LCD Temperature Mod.

More mods for my MEGA. A new LCD screen, made from a Lian Li fan controller. I'm not using it to control the fans, just to monitor three temps, and  the fan speeds. No cutting of the case is necessary. I just had to cut a hole in the MEGA floppy bezel.

Don't know about the 865Pro.....but that Lian Li controller is meant to go into a 3.5" bay. And it's very short. I had no clearance difficulty. The temp/rpm display can automatically cycle all three channels......or just display one temp. It works pretty well as a temp monitor, registering the same temps as the on-board sensors.

  • Mega 180 Temperature

    Hi all,
    Here are my settings:
    Box - Mega 180
    CPU - Barton 2500+
    Memory - 2x256 - 400Mhz from Phoenix Technologies
Disk - 120 Gigs HD - Seagate Ultraquiet
    DVD Rom - Leadtek Silent
PVR PCI Card - PVR 350 from Hauppage
    BIOS - 3.2
My concern now is temperature. Ok I have all slots occupied with an FX5200 and a PVR 250 card. Both blocking some airflow in to the CPU Vans.
These are the temps I get:
    * Anything between 50 and 60 on idle
    * Anything between 58 and 65 on medium stress
    * Anything betwen 62 and 74 on heavy load.
I don't know if I should worry about this. I know they are quite high but as long the system works and I'm not incurring the risk of damaging the PC is fine for me.
So tell me, should I worry or should I not?
    Nuno

    Hmm
I got it to a idle temperature of 38 degrees (In PCALERT4) and a top of 52/55 degrees.
What i did is cutting all the tie-wraps off the ATX Mainboard powerconnector, and leaded them Under the PSU. I have a Sparkle Geforce FX5200 (which is a small card anyway, and uses no fan to cool the GPU), and i leaded the Powercables in front of the Graphics card (when looking at the side of the MEGA 180). i didn't wrap them up again, but left them loose (because i guess they can absorb Heat when bundled together, and letting them loose won't give a pressure to anything).
Next to this i wrapped the rest of the cables to the top bar of the case, so i had the space above the AGP-card Wide open...
i also checked the airflow of the CPU-Coolers on the heatsink, got them both blowing to the right of the MEGA case (the side on which the small cooler is).
On my heatsink they were blowing opposite directions when i first unpacked it, but that could be a tiny mistake made at MSI, this didn't affect much when you used the onboard VGA. I changed the flow-direction to both to the right after i installed the AGP-card.
Something i HAVE to mention is that the harddisk can generate a LOT of heat... Haven't done much on that part in my machine, but i'm planning to drill a few vent-holes on the bracket in which the harddisk is screwed, and place one or two Fan(s) just right under it blowing away from the harddisk to the outside.
Another option i have is to use a 2.5 inch (notebook) Harddisk instead of a 3.5 inch. it's a bit slower than a normal harddisk, but generates less heat and consumes less power.
Anyway... The Quest for a cooler MEGA 180 continues......

  • USB and Mega 180 Temperature

Well, after 5 months I think I finally have my Mega 180 working.
One thing still bothers me, though.  I have an external USB hard drive and everytime I connect it to the Mega 180 system the CPU temperature raises about 15 degrees, from 45C to 60C.
Do you have any ideas why this happens or what can I do to avoid this problem?
    Thanks in advance, Ricardo

I've been working feverishly on my Mega 180 for the last month. I also have noticed a rise in temperature when plugging in any USB device. I have not seen alnything like 15c ...  for me it has been more like 4-5c.
I was having typical temperaturs of 75c while timeshifting HDTV with a USB attached turner. However a week ago I took my machine apart and did all the things in this forum to reduce termps. I used arctic silver, lapped the heatsink, reversed the fans, and removed the extra sheetmetal. This dropped my temps over 20 degrees. And now the delta for using USB is only 2c.
So I can now do the timeshifting bit at 52c.... and therefore I'm no longer worried about the USB tempertature increase.

  • Mega 865 OLED mod.

since the factory display is quite crappy thou it cant display anything more useful than the clock, (ok the winamp plugin is sweet, but it consumes some amount of cpu power)
so I found this beauty on the net.  about 300skr for everything (40$)
it can display almost everything from new email to winamp spectrumanalysis and cpu temps.
but i'd had to get rid of the card reader...      hmmm, never used it anyway.

  • Samsung LCD TV Mod. LN40A550P3F

    Multi problems
#1   Most functions on Remote have stopped working.  I know signal is being rec’d by TV sensor because I can see sensor light flashing when I press remote button (Factory & DTV Remote).
#2  Some controls on side of TV have also stopped functioning properly .  The Up & Down Arrows will not work when I have the Menu on the screen.

Unplug the TV from power, leave unplugged for 20 minutes, plug it back in and see if your problem persists.

(You still need to do the BIOS flash though)
(Change any 450 you see to 500 and tick the option to enable temp monitoring)

I upgraded my BIOS to 1.6 and started installing my software.  The software warned me that my CPU was over 80C and I saw it climb to 87C.
Could this be right?  I have the BIOS set at FAST and the software says 3.04 for my 3.0 GHz P4.
I'm pretty sure I installed the HSF correctly and also have two other fans.  One on the side of the case and the other in the rear.  Although, the rear fan seems to be blocked by the case because the holes are not very big.
    Any thoughts?
    Thanks,

  • MEGA Mods by Bluefront

These cooling/quieting mods were applied to a MEGA 651....but could be used on the other models. Since Dr Stu made this thread a sticky, I thought I'D add a disclaimer here. I've been modding things/computers for a long time. So stuff I find easy, may not be so for you. I suggest you run this computer stock for a few days at least.....before you do anything that may void your warrenty. Most problems will show up right away. Things I do to computers are designed to make them run cooler, quieter, and cleaner.....maybe making them last longer. I hate small fans....and avoid them at all costs. If you have any questions about any of my MEGA mods (I've done four MEGAS so far), feel free to ask.
I'm finishing up my second MEGA 651....with extensive modification to promote cooling, and quieting, along with a little bling.
    Partial list of major mods....
Changed 80mm PSU fan to an external 92mm fan.
Changed stock heatsink to an all-copper Manhattan heatsink/fan # 701792.
Developed a sideways mounted HD mount that can use a laptop drive, or a std 3.5" drive.
Added ducting for the CPU that allows the new PSU fan to suck all it's air through the copper heatsink, promoting passive CPU cooling.
Added an AIW 9200, a full-sized AGP card, which runs cool because of the added airflow from the 92mm PSU fan.
Added LCD temperature readouts to the front of the case, replacing the card readers.
Added an internal air filtration system, using electro-static filtration material.
Running a P4-2.4 with 512mb ram, this system runs very cool, and very quiet. Only at high CPU usage does the 70mm Evercool fan get loud enough to be heard.....Still got a few things to finish, but this is mostly complete.
    MEGA 651 #2

I made a few tests today to try to figure out the CPU fan speed in relation to the CPU temp, using the on-board fan controller. Since I have been unable to get rpm readings, I can give CPU fan voltages at different temps. These voltage steps should be the same, whatever fan or CPU you are using. I'm using Speedfan to measure the temps and a digital volt-meter to check the voltage.
With the PC off there is .5v at the CPU fan.
At the PC startup the CPU fan gets 10.5V for about 2 seconds.....then drops back to .5V (fan is stopped).
When the CPU temp reaches 45C the fan gets 4.3V and starts.
When the CPU temp reaches 53C the fan gets 5.6V.
When the CPU temp reaches 61C the fan gets 8.1V.
That is fan speed #3 and as hot as I can get using CPUBurn.
I can force the fan to maximum voltage using Speedfan, and the maxium voltage at that point is 10.5V. Apparently there is a fan speed #4.....but I never got to that temp/speed.
As the temps drop 4C below each fan step temp, the fan voltage drops back to the next lowest step. For instance....if the fan is running at 5.6V @53C, when the temp drops to 49C, the voltage drops to 4.3V. If the fan is running at 4.3V @45C, when the temp drops to about 41C, the fan will turn off.
These tests were run at an ambient temp of 27C. Both my MEGAS run their fans about the same....with the fan speeds increasing at the same temps.
What this means in practical sense, if you can keep your CPU temps about 41C.....the fan will be off. This appears to be completely normal behavior for the MEGA fan control system.
I also made some temp readings at different levels of CPU usage.....using the SiSoft Sandra CPU burn-in program.
At 30% CPU usage my system runs about 48C.
    At 50% ..... 52C.
    At 75%...... 56C.
    At 100%..... 59C.
I suppose you could use the same program, at the same ambient of 27C.....to check your own temps against mine. Using that Sandra burn program, my fan speed stayed on step #2 (5.6V) even at 100%. I am very pleased with this result. It makes for a quiet computer.

  • Changing flow meter's mode during the measurement

    Hi,
I have the CMOSens EM1 gas flow meter which can be setted to either temperature mode or flow rate mode. However, I will need both temperature data and flow rate (in ml/min) data in order to calculate the mass flow rate in kg/min. I am very new to LabVIEW so I have no idea what I can do. What I have in mind is ... doing the measurement with the sensor in temperature mode for ~ 1 second, then change to flow mode for ~ 1 second and change back to temperature mode and so on, until we stop the measurement. So output in data file might be something like this ...
    Time   Data
    0       temp
    1       flow
    2       temp
    3       flow
where temperature and flow data can be in different column. Note that the fastest sensor response time is 5 ms.
Any suggestion what I can do in LabVIEW??
Thank you so much in advance.
    Bew

    Hi SnowMule
Thank you for your suggestion. The data from flow meter is already in volume per minute so I only need to know density of gas at temperature T to find mass flow rate (...do I miss anything?). It's nitrogen gas and there's some online database availble to get the gas density from known temperature. That's why I want to read the temperature from the flow meter as well.
Additional thermocouple would be a solution if I cannot have LabVIEW to do the job for me.
    Thanks again!

  • MEGA 651 IR remote conflict w/Panasonic

Just when you think you've seen it all.....I'm watching a DVD (Panasonic player), with my MEGA turned off (on opposite side of room). I hit pause on the Panasonic remote, and the orange lite on the MEGA LCD turns on, no letters, no sound, just the light. And it won't turn off...had to pull the AC plug. Now I have no display, just the orange light when I hit the on button. The computer is working ok, but the LCD is gone except for the orange light.

The other method is to not use MSI's driver installation method and let windows find the drivers on the cd (browse to it).  I got similar errors and the computer would reboot, using their cd to set the contraption up.
    Otherwise, just ditch the card

  • Video-in Function - Qosmio G30-201

Hi, I'm starting to question my own sanity. I posted a query a while ago about video capture from the video-in port on the right sode of the laptop adjacent to the s-video input. I never really got a full answer to this (see link http://forums.computers.toshiba-europe.com/forums/thread.jspa?threadID=19160&messageID=70057
I've tried various different sources both video and audio, using the provided cable. Nothing is ever detected or played through this port and no amount of tinkering in Media Centre with the source playing seems to be able to find anything.
I have seen similar questions on the forum none of which seem to have been answered eg:

    Hello Andy,
    >Hi, I'm starting to question my own sanity. I posted a query a while ago about video capture from the video-in port on the right sode of the laptop adjacent to the s-video input. I never really got a full answer to this
Lets see if we can help you to solve this problem.
At first, please connect your VHS tape, or whatever you have, to the Qosmio video-in (composite or SVHS) and the audio in (cable supplied with the notebook)
Composite video in (Yellow RCA), left audio in (White RCA), right audio in (Red RCA)
    FOR MONITORING:
-Open the Toshiba Picture enhancement utility and choose your Video input (Composite or SVHS) and your Video signal (NTSC or Pal)
    https://www.rabayjr.com/vista/qosmiopicenh.jpg
This is used only if you want your Qosmio as a monitor in for your VHS, DVD player, etc.
Select monitor-in on picture enhancement utility, to composite input cable (the yellow) and press the hotkeys (Fn+4) to see the video from your source on Qosmio LCD display.
pressed once = 4x3 mode, pressed two = 16x9 mode, pressed three = return to LCD normal mode
or select the S video option on picture enhancement utility, if you have a SVHS cable connected to video input in your Qosmio.
    NOW FOR RECORDING:
-Pick up a good capture program, you could do this capture with media center 2005, but I let you choose a better one.
I recommend to you the Cyberlink Power Director v5.0 premium
    Link:
    https://www.cyberlink.com/multi/products/main_4_ENU.html
there is a free trial download available
Install it and after lauching it, go to the capture section:
Now go to the settings and choose the Toshiba device capture (Toshiba PCI TV Tuner MPEG encoder)
Choose your capture source, too: TV, SVHS or Composite input
    See:
    https://www.rabayjr.com/vista/qosmiorecorder.jpg
If you are using the composite cable, the one supplied with the Notebook (yellow, white and red), please SELECT THE CAPTURE SOURCE AS COMPOSITE
    https://www.rabayjr.com/vista/qosmiorecorder7.jpg
Choose the Soundmax for the G20 or the sigmatel for the G30 as your audio recorder device.
    https://www.rabayjr.com/vista/qosmiorecorder5.jpg
Right now i am doing this record test with a Qosmio G20. Windows Vista installed, by the way.
The example showed on the picture is a capture from an old NTSC video tape performing Madonna live show (dated 1980).
    https://www.rabayjr.com/vista/qosmiorecorder1.jpg
After that capture you can edit, add titles, cut off undesired scenes, etc
    https://www.rabayjr.com/vista/qosmiorecorder2.jpg
You can always view it, with Media Viewer, after captured:
    https://www.rabayjr.com/vista/qosmiorecorder6.jpg
And finally you can produce your Video
    https://www.rabayjr.com/vista/qosmiorecorder3.jpg
    To a DVD, for example:

  • Is it possible to change the range in fieldpoint explorer of a FP-TC-120 other than the default? ie reduce the range to where we are operating?

Is there a way to manually change the range to say 0 to 150 degrees Celsius? Or is the range change done in the software programming?
    Thanks Mark

The difference is due to the design of the FP-TC-120. The FP-TC-120 supports four ranges on the ADC (listed in my previous post). Configuring a temperature mode, tells the module to use the built-in linearization algorithms based upon the thermocouple type chosen. For each thermocouple type, one of the four voltage ranges is used depending upon the characteristics of the thermocouple. If a thermocouple, does not take the full scale range, the module can not simply subset the range. In the case of the K type thermocouple, I believe that the upper limit of K thermocouples is 60 mV, so the 60-80 mV portion of the range (roughly corresponding to the 1370 to 1770 C range of the module is unused). The module accuracy specs do take this into account.

  • Sony SDM-HS75P

I'm considering that Sony display for use with a PowerPC Mac Mini. I'd appreciate hearing of anyone's experiences with it.
    Thanks.

I had a similar issue with my new Fujitsu Siemens W19-1 LCD connected as external monitor to the notebook (i915). No matter what I used the LCD was not properly set. Then I found that using gtf (from xorg) I could produce a Modeline for xorg.conf that gave same result as yours. Correct resolution but the image shifted (only it was shifted to the right about 10cm). Pressing "auto" button on the LCD fixed things but only until next reboot. I experimented with different refresh rates in gtf and found that "overclocking" it a bit forced my LCD to auto fix the mode (just like by pressing "auto" button). This seems to work well so far. LCD info mode says I'm using 66 Hz but I used 70 Hz as a parameter for gtf (gtf 1440 900 70). I guess it's not that important. Everything seems stable and clear.

  • Why in my FP-TC-120 Module, the red leds are not lighting

The red indicator leds are not lighting, even if there its no TC conected, what could it happent the software works fine but the leds still turn off

The red LED's indicate Open Thermocouple detection. However, each channel can be configured for either thermocouple (temperature) or voltage measurements. If a channel is configured for one of the voltage ranges (+/-25, +/-50, +/-100, -20 to +80 mV), Open Thermocouple does not apply so the LED's are deactivated. Use the NI-FieldPoint software to make sure that your channels are in one of the temperature modes and not in voltage mode.
