Mega Pc Questions

Just got a 2 month old mega pc on its way with a celeron 1.7ghz processor and 256 ram, 80gb hd.
I read loads of reviews and they all said very good things about it.
but reading these forums makes the thing sound bad lol.
i have a few questions
1, With regards to the TV card, if i buy a msi TV @nywhere card will it be able to use the Ir reciever on the front?
is there any difference in the MEGA tv-card and the tv@nywhere card?
i have seen both so whats best to get?
2, I am not realy a game player, more into movies etc, will a NVIDIA Gforce4 MX 440 be ok in there ?
3, is the mega pc realy that bad?
4, i heard that using MSI Optical drivers give more features... any news on this?

I've had my MegaPC for a couple of weeks now, and I must say that I'm very pleased with it.
I bought a TV@nywhere Master card (MS8606) which may or may not be the same TV tuner card that comes with it optionally fitted (I don't think it is, because it was a right swine to fit!!). And yes, the Mega remote controls the card through the front IR.
If you are not thinking at all about playing games, then don't bother with an AGP video card at all, the onboard VGA is fine for DVD playback and TV viewing (in fact I whacked the shared VGA memory down to 8mb to free up system memory). In fact if you were having a TV card, then you would have to be seriously careful which VGA card you bought, simply because of the limited space. Anything with a big fan on is out of the question, otherwise you would have serious cooling issues.
The MegaPC is whatever you wanted to buy it for. For me, I wanted a replacement for my existing hifi, as I already have a power system for gaming and internet etc. The MegaPC suited me fine; ok the onboard VGA is crap and the chipset may be old, but otherwise it does exactly what I set it up to do, and maybe a bit more too. If you were looking at one as a system replacement, then you might have to get a good look at one first.
MSI optical drives are rubbish anyway, I wouldn't recommend using them (disc detect and seek times are atrocious), mine has a Sony DVD-ROM drive, which was actually cheaper than the MSI equivalent. Ok its a bit noisy when seeking, but is fine otherwise. I recommend LiteOn drives, always been very pleased with them.

  • Mega 865 Question help plz

    hi
ok after considering the 180 or 865 i decided to get the 865 instead,
and i read all the topics on the fourm regarding the 865 and i have some questions,
i'm planning to get a P4 2.8A 1mb cache and 533fsb Prescott, (i would get a northwood if they were easier to find and cheapter) i read that the mega supports prescott cpu's but with only half size card
my questions is that this CPU will work right cuz i was reading and i c that most users r using a E and no one uses A but the msi site said it supports prescott and this is prescott so i guess it'll work right?
also, i read that i need to flash the bios to work with sp2 and prescott cpu's, can i flash the bios after i install the cpu or flash it with no cpu installed?
my setup will be any comments on this would also be apprecitaed
    mega 865
    p4 2.8A prescott 533fsb
    Samsung 2x512 DDR400
    Maxtor or Seagate 160gb hb
Radeon 9600 PRO or XT or GF6200
    a cdrw
    thanks

yea i know northwood would run cooler and would be better then a prescott, but it's kinda hard to find northwoods now and even though i managed to find store that sells it here it does cost quite a lot
well i think i'll use the mega for watching movies, listening to music, internet and some gaming from time to time, should i get amd or intel based on wat i wanna do with it?
and yea i read all the sticky on how to cool it down and wat to do before setup..... but damn i'm still stuck ... amd or intel.??? LOL....

  • MEGA 180 questions

Okay, so i'm looking at getting a MEGA 180, but before I spend any money I want to make sure it's what i want.  So i have a few (hopefully easy to answer) questions.
    1. Does the BIOS allow for any sort of overclocking
    2. When it is stated that it supports up to 3000+, if you can overclock, can you get above the 3000+ level, or is that the limit.
    3. Are there any restrictions on the optical drives that will fit in it? (Dimensions would help me here)
    and finally, just in case
    4. If anyone has dealt with linux on this system, how is it, as in are there any major problems, etc.
Thanks a lot to anyone who helps, I appreciate it.

    Hi Peacetank,
    regarding your questions:
1: You can adjust the FSB, and also choose from 3 different Vcore and AGP voltages. However, the biggest problem is likely going to be the heat. You will be dealing with a lot of computer hardware stuffed in a small place. There are several suggestions on this forum to lower the temperatures, but don't expect miracles. The Mega 180 is a far from ideal OC-PC.
2: I'm not sure about this one, but guess it would be possible. A drawback on using a higher FSB would be the limitations of the nforce chipset. It seems that the onboard GForce graphics chip has problems with an FSB of 200 MHz.
3: Optical drives would preferrably be as short as possible. There are some problems reported related to specific drives so see if you can try before you buy.
4: I have seen some Linux related topics in this forum, but I don't know if all the hardware is already supported.
    If you are looking for the ultimate game PC, I would not recommend the Mega 180, but when you are looking for a well performing multimedia PC with a lot of extra's:  e.g. dual VGA out, optical SP/DIF in-out, wireless network / accespoint, radio, optional TV-card, cool looking LCD front panel, internal card reader;
and you are not afraid to tackle some problems when assembling and installing the computer, go for it!

  • MEGA-Newbie Question

This has to be the most newbie of all newbie questions. Interestingly enough, it is the one that is most rarely answered in a non-technical way that the novice can understand.
What exactly do I need Motion for? What, in common-sense, regular-language terms, does it do?
My manuals tell me how to do all the things it does. But they assume I am an experienced editor (I'm an experienced filmmaker, but only just started working in editing) who already knows all the things that CAN be done and only wants to know HOW to do them in Motion. This is not me.
So, say I am making a 90-minute HDV feature music doc. I have footage, I have stills. I will need captions, titles and text on screen. I will need an end credit roll. What is it I will probably want Motion to do for me that FCP can't do on its own?
I'd appreciate an answer in somewhat non-technical language that addresses the practical use -- from a filmmaker's point of view -- of this no doubt amazing program.
    Thank you.

    hi Paul,
You are right you can do much of the things Motion does in FCP, but Motion takes them further and often makes them easier to do.
Briefly whereas FCP is generally for editing moving pictures from rushes to a coherent whole, Motion is used to composite or layers of moving pictures to make a new coherent whole picture.
So i plain words, you can meld different sources of video, stills text and other sources together to make a new end peice. You can animate text, warp pictures, create fires, smoke, hide bits ( masking), animate graphical elements. In short whenever you need to layer up multiple sources of imagery Motion is your man. Sure FCP can handle a lot of this, but Motion is designed specifically and only to do this, and does it very well. ( You would not want to edit in Motion!)
In your 90 minute example you could do it all in FCP and make it look very nice. But you might need to go the extra mile with the title sequence, perhaps the captions will have some kind of generic strap line ( lower third) under All these things could be done easier and better in motion. However you would not want to import the whole 90 minute programme into Motion and start throwing captions on it. Rather you would want to build each element ( strap line, animating titles, opening sequence etc) in Motion and then import them into FCP for the final mastering. Motion is for short sequences, and FCP is used to collect them all into one programme.
I make music commercials for a living, do all the cutting on FCP and build all the graphic elements in Motion, take a look at my site for some examples if you'd like,

    Hope this helps you

  • Preloader suggestion

i have a main swf that's about 3.5 megs. my question is would
it be better / more efficient / practical to place a preloader on
the same swf or create a separate one on its own and have the main
swf load into it (as i am doing currently but am still have
    problems)?

The best practice is usually to separate your movie into
logical division like the menu/interface, content pane, etc. Each
section is it's own movie and you use the main movie as a loading
ground and container for the others.

We got a new Apple TV for Christmas and it works wonderful. However, my question is this. We are on a satelitte internet system and our bandwidth is limited. Can anyone tell me what effect it will have on using up my 10 megs of bandwidth? If I run over the 10 mgs, the service either slows way down until it is reset on the first of the next month or I have to purchase additional bandwidth and it can get expensive.
Any information would be greatly appreciated.

If you only have a 10MB limit on the Internet connection you might as well not have Internet access and certainly should not attempt to stream anything.
If the limit is 10GB, then you will need to be careful with streaming as most video is 1-3GB for a one hour show.

Comcast is testing usage plans (AKA "data caps") in certain markets.
The markets that are currently testing usage plans are:
Nashville, Tennessee market: 300 GB per month and additional gigabytes in increments/blocks ( e.g., $10.00 per 50 GB ).
Tucson, Arizona market: Economy Plus through Performance tiers receive 300 GB. Those customers subscribed to the Blast! Internet tier receive 350 GB; Extreme 50 customers receive 450 GB; Extreme 105 customers receive 600 GB. Additional gigabytes in increments/blocks of 50 GB for $10.00 each in the event the customer exceeds their included data amount.
Huntsville and Mobile, Alabama; Atlanta, Augusta and Savannah, Georgia; Central Kentucky; Maine; Jackson, Mississippi; Knoxville and Memphis, Tennessee and Charleston, South Carolina: 300 GB per month and additional gigabytes in increments/blocks ( e.g., $10.00 per 50 GB ) Economy Plus customers have the option of enrolling in the Flexible-Data plan.
Fresno, California, Economy Plus customers also have the option of enrolling in the Flexible-Data plan.
    - If you live outside of these markets you ARE NOT currently subject to a data plan.
    - Comcast DOES NOT THROTTLE your speed if you exceed your usage limits.
    - You can check out the Data Usage Plan FAQ for more information.

I just got a call today that I reached my 300GB limit for the month.  I called and got a pretty rude response from the security and data usage department.  The guy told me in so many words that if I do not like or agree with the policy that I should feel free to find another service provider.!!! I tried to explain that we watch Netflix and XFinity on-demand alot and I was told that that can not be anywhere close to the data usage. I checked my router and watching a "super HD, dolby 5.1" TV show on Netflix will average about 5-6 GB per hour (1.6MB/s) ... sp this means that I can only watch no more than 1-2 Super HD TV shows a day via Netflix before I run out of my data usage.    This seems a bit redicilous doesn't it? Maybe the TV ads about the higher speed than the competition should be accompanied with "as long as you don't use it too often"   Not a good experience ...

  • Prospective Mega 865 buyer with a few questions...

I'm looking into upgrading my Home PC, and I really like the small form factor of the Mega 865. My main goal is to have a very quite computer (my current PC has a noisy Maxtor hard drive), and the small form factor is a real plus. Here are a few questions:
    1) How quiet is the Mega 865? Is the power supply fan very quiet?
    2) If I use a Northwood 3.0 GHz CPU, do I need to buy a standard cooling fan or does the Mega 865 have it's own CPU cooling fan system? If so, how quiet is this fan?
    3) What's the highest screen resolution that the Integrated 865G Video can output in True Color?
    4) Can I fill one of the two memory slots with a single 512 MB module, or do I need to fill both slots with a module?
If anyone can help answer these questions, I would greatly appreciate it. Any other comments would also be appreciated!
    Thanks,
    ppcinfo

i don't have a mega 865 personally, but i'll try and answer what i can.
    1) the mega 651 was very quiet under normal loads, you'd only hear the cpu fan whirr faster when the cpu was getting hot. i imagine its the same on other megas.
    2) all the megas come with their own custom designed heatsink and fan, i doubt you'd get anything else to fit. BTW the northwood is probably a better bet than the prescott, as they don't run as hot
    3) i don't know about the mega 865, but i recently built a PC for my mom, based on the Aopen XCCube EY65, which uses the same intel 865g chipset as in the mega 865 (only doesn't support any prescott cpus  ). it runs on her 18.1" tft in 1280x1024 in truecolour mode, but only allows for a max of 16mb shared VGA memory. as she don't play games (she's an architectural glazing designer, using AutoCAD) thats fine for her.
    4) you can just use one stick of RAM if you want, but stick to some good stuff, cheaper generic RAM usually causes problems on MSI mobos
thats my tuppence worth, can any mega 865 users clarify anything for us?

  • MSI mega player 533 - quick question

I have an MSI 533 MEGA PLAYER with 256mb integrated memory (without fm) , i have upgraded the firmware to a newer version in january06 (dont know wich version ) , and everything works fine.
Now, i would like to buy a Secure Digital card with 2048MB (Kingston) for it  , but i have read somewhere that the player cannot read very large memory  cards , but it doesnt say HOW LARGE  !    ( if that is true at all )
SO , my question is how much more memory can i put into my mp3 player ? i would like to put as much as possible ! 1 gb is fine but 2 is better.
are all manufacturers SD cards compatable with the 533?
    thanks !

In the past I had tried to use “Kingmax” and “Sandisk” 2GB SD card, and those cards can be worked well on 5533, so 5533 is supposed to support 2GB SD/MMC card, but it must be latest F/W version v2.00.02, if your 5533 is not, please follow below procedure to update!!
MS-5533 firmware update process: (Don't put battery)
    1. Please download and install the latest firmware (V2.00.02) and driver (V1.672)!!
    F/W website link:
    Driver website link:
    2. After firmware unzipping, it will show some files, please replace driver installation files (C:\Program Files\MSI\MS-5533)
    3. Please press sustained “play key” first, then plug your mega player 533 in your PC.
    4. Please go to "start" (below left corner) and enter "programs" and choose "MSI MS-5533" update now!!!
    5. As you update firmware that you have to select "format data area" and after update success, you can release of your finger.
Please note: (1) Don't put battery before updating. (2) The step 3 is very important, please must press sustained “play key” first, then connect to your PC. (3) Please have to select "format data area" while update firmware. (4) Please remove previous driver first and install latest driver edition 1.672. (5) When you update F/W, please pass over all massages first from OS response and continue updating till success!!

  • Why does Firefox use up so much memory? My Windows Task Manager shows it using 109 Meg just now asking this question. Thanks

Pretty simple: I want to know how I can keep Firefox from using so much memory when in use. 100-200 meg is common. Thank you

Hi musicfan,<br />Sorry you are having problems with Firefox. Maybe you should have asked earlier and we could have fixed it.
Reading your comments I do not see that rolling back to an insecure Firefox 22 will actually help you much. You are probably best using IE, unless you have also damaged that.
    *[[Export bookmarks to Internet Explorer]]
You should not use old versions they are insecure. Security fixes are publicised and exploitable.
    * [[Install an older version of Firefox]]

Most others will not be having such problems. We are now able to say that with confidence because after developers missed a regression in Firefox 4 telemetry was introduced so that data was obtained. It may be an idea to turn on your telemetry, if you have not already done so, and decide to stick with Firefox.

  • New Mega Pc User has questions!

Hey Guys, I'm new to this forum.  I just bought a Mega PC, running a 2.6 celeron, 1 gig of samsung ram and an 80 gig maxtor HD.  I've read through the many threads in this forum but couldn't find what i'm looking for
    1) has anyone been able to mod the mega pc so that the LCD can be functional in PC mode? its such a nice display! such a waste to just show the time in pc mode
    2) i've read through the forums here and some people say that they can use the remote in PC mode specifically when using windows media player to play music.  Did you have to update anything to allow this?
I'm new to this board so any info regarding moding the mega pc in terms of LCD and remote functionality would be great!
finally i place where i can find other mega pc users!

Also Could you tell me if the light on your card readers is always on?
Also when running MSI live update it always says i need the drivers again after i downloaded! and the version for the mega pc on the web page only does the radio!
i didnt get a CD with the PC so i have the web drivers. am i missing alot?
Did the MSI media center come on the CD?
any one in the UK want to sell me a CDR copy?
if so please email [email protected] can send you a couple of quid on paypal or somthing
yes if you download the latest version of msi radio from the support page, you will be able to use the remote when the computer is on for media player. For example. if the computer is on, and you press "hi fi" on your remote, media player will automcatically open and the lcd lights up and says "cd", has the play arrow and the circle rotates.  i wish the equalizer came on! :P
yes my card reader light is always on, don't worry i don't think this really matters
Actually if you run live update 3 (the website based version) it tells you the version you have, and the version on the web.  I think its up to you to compare each version and download if necessary.
If you didn't get the cD don't worry you are not missing anyhting i think.  IT just had agp, video, network, modem, and audio drivers, all of which are on the website with latest versions.  Some utilities are on the cd as well, but all and MORE are found on the website.
AND YES IF ANYONE HAS THE "GREETING" PROGRAM PLEASE POST!!

  • Ddr400 question - mega 180

as usual, I'm a bit confused by contradicting information on forums and MSI releases. Some places say DDR333 is the max, others say DDR400.
here's the deal: I want to use 1gb of kingston DDR400 with an MSI mega 180 and an Athlon Xp 2000+, without using onboard video.
I am not much into overclocking (harldy need it...) - I'm more interested in stability.  I certainly don't know enough about it to mess around with bios and possibly ruining the poor machine.
if I simply put the DDR400 in place with this CPU and an AGP video card (without changing the bios from AUTO mode), will it be stable? otherwise, what changes do I need to manually do in the bios to insure stability while using the abilities of DDR400?
BTW: after a little modding work, by the way, heat is no longer an issue.

I'm using DDR400 because thats what i found when i looked at the specification for the  MEGA 180 and when i placed the order online the shop said they were compatible.
When installed the DDR400 memory is working fine no problems at all... its just running at 333 instead of 400. I didn't bother returning it to get DDR333 because everything is working fine and the 512MB Giel memory was pretty cheap (only 775NOK) from here

  • Battery question about Mega Player 540

    Hi,
I recently bought MSI MP540 and I'm absolutely delited with it's sound and features, but...
There's always some BUT, mine is this one:
The salesman where I bought it had told me to form a battery as a first thing to do before further usage.
I came home, turn the player on and LED indicator stated that the battery is at full charge so I continued as a following...
I connected it to my comp, copied some mp3 music on it and started to listen it for an aproximately 5 hours when the battery went to low and the player had turned itself off.
I read the manual which states that you should leave the player for a first time charge for an 8 hours.
Every other charge from that one should take aproximately 5 hours for a full recharge, or a 3 hours of charging for a 80% of battery power.
    What's the problem then?
When I put my player to recharge with it's ac/dc adaptor it is recharging itself for a two hours only and then simply stops.
The power indicator on a player is yellow/orange and states full recharge. When I turn the player on and start listening mp3s only, it plays aproximately 4-5 hours until it's empty again.(just like the first time when I bought it)
Is this normal or not, cause the manual "sais" the things I already mentioned and "8 hours of total mp3 playing time" also?
    Cheers.

    thanks for your reply stu,
I appreciate your advice and hope that would help me.
I couldn't find similar question to the one I posted so I had left myself undecided between many choices; is the MP 540 manual correct or not,
is the battery fully functional or less power type, or am I doing something wrong.
    Cheers
