Mega Player 533- F/W v2.00.02 & Driver v1.672- Possible Problem & Fix to Recover

RE: Firmware v2.00.02 & Driver v1.672 Update dated 06/04/06 for Megaplayer 533 - Model MS5533.
I think that there is a possible problem with the above Driver & Firmware Versions as they do not seem to work for the Mega Player 533 - Model MS5533 ???. It renders the player inoperable (ie.Unable to turn player on at all) and also makes the 256MB flash drive unrecognisable to the computer (ie. computer asks for a disk to be inserted into the flash drive, similarly like the SD Expansion slot) .
All Steps to update the firmware were followed to the letter, including no battery, updating to the new version of the driver software v1.672, formatting the drive at the same time and pressing sustained "play" button.
Possible Fix : I was able to make the player operable again by reinstalling the original driver software & rolling back the firmware version back to v1.00.06 again (Try original firmware v1.00.02 if you haven't saved the v1.00.06 Firmware to your hard drive, as MSI does not have any longer the v1.00.06 firmware on their website to download anymore ). It now works as it did before  :D(unfortunately still with the "ROCK" setting bug) .
NOTE: In order for computer to recognise the drive, Press sustained "Play" button when connecting to the computer, then please go to "start" (below left corner) and enter "programs" and choose "MSI MEGA PLAYER MS-5533" then "Download Firmware".
Computer should then recognise the player and allow for the firmware update .
My main concern is that many of MSI's other unsuspecting customers will download this particular software and experience the same problems as I did. They probably won't be able to figure out how to rectify this issue & therefore unfortunately be left with a player that does not work at all .
I have logged this problem now with MSI, but have yet to hear a response from them.
Has anyone else out there experienced this same problem or is it just me??? ???.
I searched this forum for any similar posts for this problem but found none.
If I am doing anything wrong to update firmware v 2.00.02, please let me know.
I did notice however that driver v1.672 software for MS5533 was called a "Megastick" and NOT a "Mega Player". Is this possibly the cause of the problem as it is the wrong driver for the MSI 533 Mega Player - Model MS5533 ???. Any help with this would be greatly appreciated.

Hello,
Actually it is a long story including 2 other 533s which are fried (literally) during upgrade process.
Here are some of my experiences...
After completion of one of my upgrade attempts  I inserted battery and get "usb power surge" message when plugged. That rendered the device inoperable with the battery. It was still recognizable by windows both as recovery and storage devices depending on pressing/not pressing start button before plugging.
To be sure I checked the usb voltage of my PC  with a multimeter and it was about 4.5 volts on load. During my countless plugging unplugging attempts I accidentally noticed that if I connect USB cable sort of half way (like only dc power pins connected but data pins not) device was able to start as mp3 player. I mean original mega logo appeared and device was able to play mp3s as normal. Then I made a special usb cable to try to power it with 3 serially connected AAA cells (~4.5 volts total) via USB port. And surprise,... it was working. So for a couple of days I used it with that external battery pack. It was big and ugly though. And I gave it to a friend who likes customized! devices : ).
And here is what I did to install latest firmware into my second 533:
1) I deleted all file instances and registry traces of old 533 driver and downloader versions both automatically (by uninstaller) and manually (coz related sys file was still there, in system32\drivers folder and maybe also in driver backup after automatic uninstallation). Also maybe it is necessary to perform a complete search because despite I deleted the related sys, windows was able to install recovery device  probably from its driver backup folder. I also deleted related oemxx.inf from \inf folder (be careful, don’t delete the wrong oemxx.inf ones belong to other devices). Because windows rename/recopy original *.inf into oemxx.inf.
2a) I put firmware files from zip into driver installation package's bin folder.
2b) Again I put firmware files from the zip into c:\program files\msi\... after installation (though this step is probably unnecessary)
3) I removed battery, pushed the button, plugged in, windows recognized it as recovery device, after about 5 seconds   (not too long coz a device timeout occurs sometimes, and if this happens unplug and replug while still pressing the button)  started software, now device was disappeared from hardware list momentarily and re-recognized as storage volume.
4) Here I get an error message like "operating system error..." It was impossible to use software with the device recognized as "recovery device". I unplugged and re-plugged now without pressing the button, device was recognized as usb storage volume and I started the software and upgraded the firmware. Device was inoperable...
5) Repeated the process, now with pressing the button. I upgraded the firmware. And everything was OK. Rock EQ fault was gone. A playlist function is added, hough I dunno how to use this  as yet : ) When I go into playlist option I’m unable to exit, and only way I found to exit is turnoff. Except this detail it works properly.
My computer is a standard Dell latitude c600 (an old model with one USB-1 port only), with windows xp spII. Device chip is stmp3502 according to latest driver but it was a stmp3500 according to driver on the cd came with the device.
Hope this helps,
Best regards.
PS: Despite the whole adventure I really like this device, its plain design, SD card feature, removeable battery, and especially its stmp35xx chip, also used in ipod shuffles which is regarded as best sounding ipod model, by some people.
PS 2: Maybe this is known to everyone, but I just noticed that it is possible to play non-compressed wav files with maga player 533 (16 bit 44.1 khz stereo PCM files). All you have to do is copying them into "voice" folder of the device. Then you have CD quality audio. I dont know whether it is possible with older firmwares too, or just a feature of latest one.  I also tried higher quality formats like 24 bit 48 khz but device couldnt see these ones
anyone tried this procedure? did it work?didn't work for me..

  • Mega Player 533 crashes??

    Hi,
I got the other day for christmas a megaplayer 533 mp3 player and have had acouple of little problems.
It seems that when I try to tune in radio stations and save channels etc the player will crash. have to remove and replace battery everytime. It even crashes sometimes with playing mp3's. it mainly happens when i have hit stop.
It also has afew tries booting up before it works. And it has also failed to boot too. Have to do the battery trick to get it going again.
Do I have a faulty player or is this normal for the mega player 533?
Overall I am very happy with player so far, except for this annoying crashing! I have tried flashing to the latest firmwire, as of 28.12.05.
Thanks for nay help you can give.....
    Werdy666

ok just to make sure i am doing this right this is what i did to flash the firmware....
    - removed battery
    - held down on button
    - plugged usb cable into player
    - waited for computer to detect usb device
    - ran firmwire update via the start menu
    - updated and formatted memory.
    - disconnected from computer
    - put battery back in
then i turned it back on, turned backlight on to 30 secs and changed Equalizer to rock.  had no mp3's so i went straight for the radio. when to tune in a station and the thing reset itself.
    then typed this message!
is it faulty? not a prob to take it back and get another one, but don't want to return it if its a user fault! lol
    Thanks

  • Problem MSI mega player 533

after update 002.000.* firmware in MSI MEGA PLAYER 533, windows and linux not detected MSI MEGA PL-533,and can not switch "ON" my devices, how to repair
in windows  INITIALIZING MSI-5533 not detected devices ,pleaase help meeeee how to repair

    I finally solved "the v2.00.02/v1.672 firmware update problem" [after 20 install/reinstall f*ckups]
[I also tought (at the time) that my player is dead/fried...doesn't matter now dough..]
It's almost funny now how easy I made it to work again with updated firmware..
point is that when you connect it on USB without pressing anything and start updater
and when it says "Media state not initialized" you check "Format" and run it..when completed
unplug it..and then again connect it with play pressed all the time (as described in instructions)..
start updater again with format option checked and wait to complete..thats it!
now finally everything works fine as it should be (v2.00.02)..
P.S. "Questioon" wrote that he didn't figured how to work with playlist..just, when you are in the "playlist", need to press next/previous key for about half a second to navigate through folders (when you copy music to player you put it in folders if you want to use playlist feature)

  • MSI mega player 533 - quick question

I have an MSI 533 MEGA PLAYER with 256mb integrated memory (without fm) , i have upgraded the firmware to a newer version in january06 (dont know wich version ) , and everything works fine.
Now, i would like to buy a Secure Digital card with 2048MB (Kingston) for it  , but i have read somewhere that the player cannot read very large memory  cards , but it doesnt say HOW LARGE  !    ( if that is true at all )
SO , my question is how much more memory can i put into my mp3 player ? i would like to put as much as possible ! 1 gb is fine but 2 is better.
are all manufacturers SD cards compatable with the 533?
    thanks !

In the past I had tried to use “Kingmax” and “Sandisk” 2GB SD card, and those cards can be worked well on 5533, so 5533 is supposed to support 2GB SD/MMC card, but it must be latest F/W version v2.00.02, if your 5533 is not, please follow below procedure to update!!
MS-5533 firmware update process: (Don't put battery)
    1. Please download and install the latest firmware (V2.00.02) and driver (V1.672)!!
    F/W website link:
    Driver website link:
    2. After firmware unzipping, it will show some files, please replace driver installation files (C:\Program Files\MSI\MS-5533)
    3. Please press sustained “play key” first, then plug your mega player 533 in your PC.
    4. Please go to "start" (below left corner) and enter "programs" and choose "MSI MS-5533" update now!!!
    5. As you update firmware that you have to select "format data area" and after update success, you can release of your finger.
Please note: (1) Don't put battery before updating. (2) The step 3 is very important, please must press sustained “play key” first, then connect to your PC. (3) Please have to select "format data area" while update firmware. (4) Please remove previous driver first and install latest driver edition 1.672. (5) When you update F/W, please pass over all massages first from OS response and continue updating till success!!

  • COLD CASE (Mega Player 533; Firmware v2.00.02)

PS: Sorry for poor image quality. All I have was a cheap webcam at the moment.
Edit: Humm I noticed that direct clicking does not work but you can copy paste URLs into browser's address bar

    Questioon, congratulations on being successful.
Unfortunately, the problem is that Firmware v2.00.02 & Driver v1.672 does not seem to work for everyone.
There have been several cases (including myself) where these particular Firmware & Driver Version updates have not been successful & have actually left the Mega Player 533 inoperable afterwards, no matter what techniques were used to update the software (including MSI's Website Instructions).
Could you advise since upgrading your Mega Player 533 to Firmware v2.00.02 did you get the same problem as linhart.ondrej, where the player drives are now no longer being detected by the computer so that nothing can be copied to or from the player.
Also, it would be very informative if you could tell us:-
    (1) What operating system is being used by your computer.
    (2) What Device Chip is being used in your Mega Player 533. (You can find this out in the Firmware Update Screen. If you click on the "Show Details" Button within this screen you will see it in the top right corner) and
    (3) Was there anything different in the procedure that you used that allowed you to be successful with the firmware upgrade to v2.00.02?
Any further details that you could provide would be greatly appreciated.
Could you please reply in the below topic, so that everyone can benefit from knowledge.

  • Mega Player 533 - Working as USB 1.1 only?!?

OK, today i got two players of this model, for me and my sister, and they are both working on USB 1.1!!! there is no way i can make them copy music or files with normal USB 2.0 speed.
Do you know what could be the problem??

Exist two tipes of USB 2.0
Firts one is USB 2.0 Full speed - it's means that device can work properly with USB motherboard conectors 1.0, 1.1 & 2.0 but speed will be as USB 1.0
Second one is USB 2.0 Hight speed - it's means that device can work with USB motherboard conectors 1.0, 1.1 & 2.0 and speed will be as USB 2.0
Mega Player 533 support only USB 2.0 Full Speed
    It's advertising trick.

  • Mega Player 533

For some time my player started to appear locked from time to time, but somehow I managed to turn it on and play although it go in lock state after some time without any reason. And after some time it just stays locked now and I'm unable to turn it on, as it always says LOCKED. First I thought it's the lock button behind, but I checked all contacts on switch and they are ok, meaning it's not mechanical that switch gone bad. Next I thought system got broken and put another firmware, but still nothing.
Maybe it just got tired and decided to resign. I don't use it that much anymore, but it really bugs me what's wrong and I'm not able to do anything about it. I also read almost every post here regarding this issue and tried formating, various firmware, disk repair for bad sectors and God knows what else but always same thing happens.
    Thanks in advance.

  • Mega Player 538 won't start anymore

I just flashed the firmware of my mega player 538 to the latest 1.11.03.
The prosedure went ok but now the player won't start anymore.
When I press "Power On" -button nothing happens.
Is there anything that I can do or is the player gone...?
Can I reset the player to solve the problem?

I contacted MSI support, but no answer from them yet.
Unfortunately I didn't have time to wait because I had a very important affair where I needed the device.
So, I returned the player to the shop. Of course the shop didn't have replacement on the stock but they gave me my money back. So, I went to another shop and bought a creative player instead and I was able to complete my affair.
It would have been nice to have the problem solved because the player was perfect for my needs and was very cheap as well (only 20 euros). The new player was three times more expensive and only 512Mb storage.
If MSI will return with a solution I can post it here in case somebody else has a same kind of a problem.

  • Crap BT handsfree voice quality using MEGA PLAYER 522BT

It has been more than 2 months since I bought my MEGA PLAYER 522BT. Initially, I was thinking of using this as my handsfree, but th evoice quality is really some crap! Eversince then, I have been checking the MSI download page in hope for new FW to improve this. So far, only 1 FW was released, and it deals only the bugs in the audio player, not the Bluetooth module.
That leads me to think that since mp3 players with 512MB onboard + ordinary BT handsfree costs more than this device, and the integration of both with the addition of SD/MMC card slot for this device will rack up the price quite a bit. But the price is very attractive when I bought it (consider it was an early launch at my place). So, the only logical thing I deduced from all this is: the BT module used in the device is CRAP!!!
I do hope I can find ways to improve it, but since it looks like it's a hardware issue, so not much hope there... Make no mistake. Using it as a pure basic music player is great, though.
If anyone could shed some light into this matter, any efforts are much appreciated.

I am annoyed with my 522.
At least 1 real 3.5mm head phone connector would have been nice.
What I would like to see is MSI backing this unit up with a range of better earphones or headphones.
It is impossible to buy any 2.5mm with a mic that work in the shops. Tiried my mda compact supplied phones. no joy.
The unit works well, my complaints are
    1) An audio beep when incoming bluetooth would be nice, not just a fade.
    2) Bluetooth volume passed to the headset is low, I can hardly hear calls when in noisey stations , streets.
    Please MSI fix number 2.
I have not had the echo problem.
    3) A better cover and belt clip/.arm clip. The one supplied is crap and is so tight the bluetooth button keeps engaging muting the sound.
Intermitant crashes , but sound is not bad.
Please MSI give me the chance to buy better phones. Ideally a 2.5mm fly lead , with a mic on for voice calls and a real 3.5mm headphone socket for my choice of phones.

i wish u can help me... i just want an easy way to PLAY VIDEOS on my player 536...
    thnx...
    waiting replyz...

5536 and 5540 can playback avi and .mov video files, but these files codec must be M-JPEG format!!
Please attention: 5536 didn’t playback MP4 or WMV video formats, and also couldn’t reveal these files!!
“Quick Time7 Pro” and ““Canopus ProCoder Demo v1.25” converting software can support 5536/5540 video format (M-JPEG) to playback, but “QuickTime7 Pro” isn’t free, you have to purchase it, and “Canopus ProCoder Demo v1.25” is free, but only can use 30 days. Please go to below website to download it and you have to register and login!!
When you download “Canopus ProCoder Demo v1.25”, please modify file name to “ProCoderDemo_1_25.exe”, then this file just can become execution file, after installation you have to check video and audio codec, have a little trouble, I will explain how do set M-JPEG codec!!
When you perform “Canopus ProCoder” software, you will find out “Source”, “Target” and “Convert” selection, please go to “Source” and add which video you want to convert, next please go to “Target” and choose “Add” selection, then choose “QuickTime file” in the basic, after that, you will detect “Target Parameters” on the right, please according to below codec format to set, finally, please go to “Convert” selection to begin converting!!
    Video setting:
    Width: 320
    Height: 240
    Frame Rate(fps): 10.000
    Interlacing: Non-Interlaced
Aspect Ratio: Video: [4:3], Pixel: [1:1]
Encoder: Apple Photo JPEG or Apple Motion JPEG A
Codec options: Click for Codec Properties
    Audio setting:
    Channels: Stereo
    Sample Rate(kHz): 11.025
    Bits / Sample: 16
    Encoder: 16-bit Big Endian
Codec options: Click for Codec Properties
By the way, You can select another sample rate parameter on the audio setting, but you can only choose 10.000 frame rate (fps) on the video setting, this value will influence whether can playback after converting video, so this setting is very importantly!!
    Please try again!!
