Megastick 256 firmware update failure (USB 2.0 version)

When I update the firmware of my Megastick 256 (the new "silver" USB 2.0 version), it would not turn on  anymore and seems completely dead. I can "revive" it by removing the battery and connecting it while the "Play" button is pressed and "downgrade" to the firmware version from the included CD (version 2.000.008). I would like to update to 2.011.002, 2.100.000 or 3.000.013, but all of them turn the stick into a dead brick. My computer only has USB 1.1, but I don't think this is the problem.
Ths update utility tells me that my stick has "chip version" 3500.
Another problem is that the firmware update utility will report a timeout when I connect the stick with pressed "Play" button, and the firmware version present in the "msi-5112" directory is not 2.000.008. I can only update by connecting the stick normally.
Has anyone managed to update the firmware of the new revision of the Megastick? If so, how exactly did you go about it?
Thanks in advance

- Do you also have the USB 2.0 version of the stick?
  it is usb 1.1
- Does your computer support USB 2.0?
  yes
- How exactly did you do the update (when did you press "Play"?).
Held play down, plugged into computer, kept holding play
   until recover device was visible.
Copied and unzipped the new firmware to c:Program Files\MSI\MSI551X
  Ran the program START->Programs ->MSI->MS 551X Update
Check the update firmware was 3.xxx and click Start or Okay.
waited for it to finish.  unplugged mega stick and powered it on.
- What was the original firmware of you stick?
   2.11.2
- Did you use the update program from the CD or the one from the MSI page?
   from the cd
- Did you have the battery in the stick for the update?
   yes.

  • "Firmware Update Failure", please help

Okay so my brand new 20GB iPod photo refuses to have the systems software loaded onto it, everytime I try and use the iPod Updater (yes I have the newest version) it says: "Firmware Update Failure. Disk write error." I've got it connected with USB 2.0, it shows up as a removable storage device in my computer but doesn't show up at all in iTunes.
So if any of you know what's going on please give me a hand.

    JamesBond said:
That means that USB2 port is not compatible with the iPod?
I don't think so. More along the lines that the iPod is not USB 2.0 compliant, or properly certified, or it has a bug somewhere.
Basicly if a device is USB 2.0 compliant, it will work with a USB 1.1 port, just very slowly.
from www.usb.org, if a "device" has passed the certification and has earned the proper "High Speed USB" logo http://www.usb.org/developers/compliance/logo/usbhs125.gif it also HAS to work with a USB 1.0 port otherwise it won't earn the logo.
Now, this begs the question... has the iPod passed it's tests and earned it's High Speed USB certification logo? I can't find any of Apples products that have the logo, can someone point me to them?
Apple is a memeber of the USB Implementers Forum, Inc (and only has one person that is a member).
You can find some good information about USB at www.usb.org. Specificly that it is no longer refered to as USB 2.0, but as "High Speed USB" (just semantics)

  • FOUND SOLUTION TO: "Firmware Update Failure.Diskwrite Error"

I have found a solution to the:
    "FIRMWARE UPDATE FAILURE. DISKWRITE ERROR."
Last night i re-encoded my mp3's to 128kbs, and then plugged my iPod Shuffle in, and it went crazy... i tried restoring and it kept giving me the error above!
Anyways, here's a solution (that may require to be tried a couple of times)...
If you keep getting this error, go to My Computer, then right click the iPod (maybe called "Removable Storage").
Go to Format... and make sure its set at FAT32. Also make sure that "Quick Format" is unticked.
Once this is done. Eject it. Plug it into another USB slot, and go to iPod Updater and restore. It should work.
And then rename the ipod thru iTunes, and upload ur music on to it!
    Enjoy and Good luck!

So are there any risks involved in formatting with windows?
I just tried doing this and it won't format (I select the option but there is no response)

  • Getting "Firmware Update Failure" when restoring

My ipod mini kept giving me the folder and exclamation point icon and resetting didn't work to make it stop. I tried a few times to restore, but it keeps giving me the message "Firmware Update Failure. Disk Write Error" whenever I try to restore. Now what do I do? My ipod still just gives me the folder icon.

A couple of tricks to try:
    1) Plug in whatever was last connected (charger, peripheral) and then try rebooting. Sometimes it just wants to see the last config
    2) Try mounting on PC as USB drive (may take multiple tries). If successful, then REFORMAT just like an external HD.
At that point, you can "start over" with iPod update.

  • Restore fails with "Firmware update failure. Disk write Error" message

I am going totally bonkers with this one. My Shuffle stopped working suddenly.
My iTunes was not able to read the contents of the iPOD and there seems to be a corrupt filesystem. After reviewing various posts, I have tried the following with little success:
    1. Tried Restore using the Updater tool that came with the Shuffle (2005-09-23). I kept getting the "Firmware update failure. Disk write Error"
    2. Downloaded the new updater tool (2006-03-23) and tried restore again. I got the same error message again.
    3. Tried formatting using Windows format, it is not able to complete the format
    4. Tried chkdsk. Get an error message saying "CHKDSK is not available for RAW drives."
    5. Tried connecting it to a different computer and tried pretty much the same steps. Similar results.
I am using USB 2.0 both on my current Thinkpad as well as the other computer I tried with.
I am totally clueless and am not sure how to go about fixing this one. Though there have been lots of posts about this, I haven't been able to find a solution that works for me. Any thing else that I may have missed out which I can try?
    Thanks,

    hiya!
just checking. have you worked through the possibilities from this document yet?
"Disk cannot be read from or written to" when syncing iPod or "Firmware update failure" error when updating or restoring iPod
given that you're connecting to a laptop, we'd better check on this possibility too:
iPod not recognized when connected to Windows laptop over USB
... and even though you aren't using a Toshiba, this technique might be worth a try (if all else fails):
iPod not recognized correctly on Toshiba laptop

  • Does anyone know how to solve: "Firmware update failure. Disk write error"?

    Hi all,
Here is the list of all what went wrong and where I am now:
    1. My Ipod worked well
    2. I wanted to update it, you know, the normal thing with Itunes
    3. Every time I tried, my computer froze. I was unable to add only one song (both automatically and manually).
    4. I took my external drive (where my music is) at work and tried again: same result.
    5. I decided to run the Updater I have on the CD that came with the Ipod.(2005-02-07; I usually avoid the newer version, having had once a problem when putting a newer version of Updater).
    6. The Updater was unable to operate any action on my Ipode (I don't remember the messages now).
    7. Like I tried what I describe here above like a hundred time. I decided to format the Ipod with Windows (My Computer, right click on the Ipod, format).
    8. It did and now I have only the famous folder with an exclamation mark on my Ipod.
    9. Now when I am running the Updater, it says it cannot Restore the factory settings giving this message "Firmware update failure. Disk write error".
I would appreciate any help because, during the last 2 hours, I read and tried all I found on the Support Help here on the Apple web side without any result yet.
Thank a lot for your answer

  • Hp Laserjet CP3525 Firmware update failure

I was trying to update the firmware on an HP color Laserjet CP3525 using a USB  connection using the instructions that were posted on the HP website for the Firmware upgrade.  It looked like everything was going well, but when the printer rebooted it never gets past the 6/6 screen on the LED screen.  I have left the printer in this condtion for several hours and it never gets past this area. I'm assuming that the Firmware upgrade caused the printer to do a hard crash and is not recoverable, but I'm hoping that someone might be able to help get this back up and working.  Any assistance would be greatly appreciated.
    This question was solved.
    View Solution.

Well, in general if the firmware update was interrupted for any reason it would lead to this. This could be caused on the computer side (restarting/logging out/ending the process before it is complete) or in the cord that you are connected with if it is damaged in any way or not properly secured in the USB ports.  I am sorry that you are in this situation, I understand that in a situation with limited spending caps you would have legitimate concerns about updating your other machines.

  • Camera firmware update via USB thru ImageBrowser EX?

    Hello everyone!
I recently made my first ever Canon camera in the history of the universe (Powershot SX280 HS) and it's amazing.
I have a question, though, about firmware updates.
When I launch ImageBrowser EX, and click on the button to "update to latest version" with my camera connected to my computer via USB, does this update the firmware too? Or does this only update ImageBrowser EX?
I understand that updating the firmware requires me to download a file from my product's support page and manually installing it using a memory card. But I was wondering if updating through USB is also possible.
    Thoughts?
    Thanks for reading this message.

I am pretty sure you have to do it the way Canon tells you to in its documentation on the support page for the 280, i.e. copying the firmware file to a card in a card reader.  There is no mention of ImageBrowser in the documentation.  Updating via ImageBrowser is probably just for the browser software on your computer.  Most things can be done via USB but updating firmware is usually a pretty rare thing except for this particular model camera which has seen two updates so far and I wish would see another (since I too am verging on returning it to the store before my 30 days are up, the day after I get home from vacation). The issues improved with the updates but are still there (see very long thread about battery issues in this forum).

  • Laserjet cp2025 firmware update failure

My lasejet is USB connected and I've been trying to update the firmware to the latest version. I've done everything in the support area to get it to update but still no joy. The update runs and says it succesfully updated buy the smily face when it is done but the printer didn't do what HP says it was suppose to and verified by printing a config page. I've tried networking and still get the same results.
Anyone have any idaes as to what might the problem , Me or the firmware update?

  • Megastick 256 firmware bug ?

My Megastick 256 (F/W 2.10) has a strange problem in that every so often the music stops for about 1/2 second and then continues.  This is not connected with the compressed file due to the fact that when I rewind the song to the same period that caused the problem, it plays no problem.
If I did not know better I would say the pause button had been pressed and the released.  This sounds to me like a memory latency problem with the flash memory.  If the player can not stream the music file off the Flash fast enough then it will empty its cache and we have a blank spot in the music.
It could be 2 things, the first is the firmware not managing the memory efficiently enough or the decoder is not optimised efficiently to work with the memory.
Additionally it could be a badly compiled file, this I doubt as the files have been produced using the MP3 coding done in Sonic Foundary's Sound Forge 6 and the associated MP3 encoder.  If the file was badly compiled then chances are the fault would be repeatable but it is not.
I also use this to compress things in WMA with most of the music encoded at 64bit as I am not entirely worried about the overall quality, If I want that I listen to the CD.   I find that I can get about 7 hours of music on the megastick and when riding the bike it is not an essential thing that we have CD quality.
As an interim solution has enyone tested the megastick with different compressed WMA or MP3 files to see if there is a better or preferred compression method that prevents this problem.  I wondered if the larger files would have less for the decoder to do thus preventing the problem.
Finally, without the problem shown above this is a great piece of kit.  I would like to see some form of organisation towards the song lists, maybe a category system would be nice.

Thanks for the feedback, guys. Very useful.
Yes, I have found the volume control a bit restrictive as well, although unfortunately I suspect that this may be a limitation of the hardware rather than something that can be fixed by firmware. Anyway, hopefully MSI will listen and take it into account for future releases.
The headphones supplied don't seem too bad. I think they are better than the ones supplied with earlier models? Having said that, the quality is rather better with an expensive pair of Sony ones instead...
I noticed with interest that quite a few issues raised in this forum DO seem to have been addressed, which is most encouraging. Companies that really do listen will certainly get my custom!
On another note, I have just been experimenting with WMA files (variable bit rate). I'm pleased to say that I have not experienced any of the spurious noise that was reported in some other posts.

  • Aluminum Keyboard firmware update FAILURE

I accepted the firmware update yesterday and was asked for my appleID password to confirm installation. After the firmware installation started (listed as "Aluminum Keyboard Firmware Update 1.0" in the title bar of the installation window, but 1.1 in the software update list), the keyboard just stopped working entirely (although the mouse connected to the USB slot was still functioning) and oddly, I was asked for my password to resume installation. Of course at this point, I had no functioning keyboard to enter the password!
I plugged in a spare MS keyboard to put in the password and continue the installation, which stalled due to some internet issues (still not sure if it's ISP or AirPort related). I woke up this morning to check and the update was still stuck installing. It wouldn't let me close the update without forcing, but I went ahead and stopped it and re-started the firmware update by checking for software updates again. The update asked me for my password THREE times and went through a loop of progress on what appeared to be the same installation screen. After the third time, I received a message that the firmware installation failed.
So now I've completed the firmware update (with an error) and managed to incapacitate my keyboard. Any idea what I can do to get my keyboard working again?
I'm aware of the possibility that the additional keyboard may be causing problems, but being prompted for a password three times during the firmware update necessitates it.

    Welcome to the Apple Discussions!
At this point you may be better off taking the KB to an Apple Store and getting them to install the firmware.
To be honest, I would never do a firmware update with Software Update. As you see, things can go wrong, especially when you are relying on an internet connection. Whenever SU informs me of a firmware update I decline to install and then go to the Apple Downloads page, manually download the update and, following the instructions exactly, install the update manually.

  • Megastick 520 Firmware Update Error

I tried to update my MS-520 firmware (version 0.1.7 to 0.1.9) but for my surprise the UPDATE PROGRAM detect the files I had downloaded (tagged MS520 0.1.9) as MS511 , ¿Can someone in MSI explain that? Of course my MS520 became unusable   but afterwards I put it again to work using the Recovery Mode.  The case is, ¿IS MSI DOING THINGS CONCIOUSLY?
Another point, ¿IS POSSIBLE TO UPDATE THE MS520 INTERNAL DATE? The files I recorded were tagged in 1997 or something like that...
The functionality of the MS520 is EXCELLENT  but not the SUPPORT FROM MSI  which must be performed in a better way not to lose customer confidence.
If anyone can help me solve these doubts...
    Thanks.
