Megaworks 510D

My power light no longer comes on and there is no sound. I checked that there is power at the sub-woofer and that the fuse is good. I have read that this might be a problem with this speaker system. Just what has burnt out? Can it be fixed and if so how can it be prevented from happening again.

Oh yah, forgot to mention that i checked the fuse and it appears to be ok.So either my amp or power supply is blown.Where do i go from hear now that all of my sub is blown up?The thing looks brand new on the outside.Looking at this forum it sounds like there is a steady pattern with this system. I just wish creative would at least give me options as to what to do with it. Its taking up space in my living room you know?My satellite all work great it just a dead sub .What do i do.Send it in to creative and have it repaired?will creative let me trade it in for a discount off a new one?Am i supposed to eat it and throw it in the dumpster and buy a new sub? Will creative address the problem for free of charge even though the sub is out of warranty?Since there seems to be a pattern with this system having problems. When i call tech support to get these questions answered they want to charge me. I would have to rate creatives customer support as poor.

  • Connecting Creative Megaworks 510D to Nforce - Analogue or digital bes

    Hi,
I am awaiting delivery of a set of Creative Megaworks 510D 5.1 speakers, and have a couple of questions for you..
    1) What is the best method of connecting them to my K7N420 Pro?.
I have a CNR (AMR?) card as a plan B, but my first preference would be for a digital connection. Actually, the DAC used on the Nforce and it's AMR card is not bad (Analogue Devices 1885 18-bit), but the phillips 24/96 dac in the 510Ds is probably better.
Trouble is that the 510Ds use a 3.5mm stereo jack for digital input rather than the standard phono SP/DIF interface. Anyone know if an adaptor cable can be made up, or has anyone managed to get this working correctly?
Apologies if this has been asked/answered many times before, but If I must go analogue, which ports on the ANR / MB correspond to front l/r, rear l/r, centre and sub?.
    2) What would be the optimum control panel settings for these speakers for games, dvd viewing, and music (stereo CD, MP3 etc?). I'm using 1.13
I would think that there is a set of settings which should work ok for most sources, and then 'optimised' settings for different media. I would be grateful for any pointers...
    Cheers,
    Alex

    Hi,
    Thanks for the info...
My speakers do not have a DD5.1 decoder for the digital input, so I'm not sure how it will pan out. I cannot find much information on the format of the datastream - I assume that if the control panel settings are configured for 5.1, then then spdif datastream will be DD5.1 encoded, rather than linear PCM.
I am assuming that the spdif datastream contains channel information for the following channels, but am not sure if my speakers will be able to 'understand' it:
FL, centre, FR, RL, RR, Sub (lfe).
the megaworks 510D manual and nvidia APU white papers are a bit vague, and I'm getting lost!. The 510D shows the digital input as a stereo minijack, but suggests that you use a mono RCA - mono minijack converter for non-audigy cards.
    Still confused :(
    Cheers,
    Alex

  • Does any1 know if the "digital" input on MegaWorks 510D is SP/DIF???

I think the subject line says it all!
Am transfering to using a laptop PC which has an SPDIF (RCA/phono) output and i was wondering if any of you bright people know if the MegaWorks digital mini-jack input is SPDIF?
    Thanks folk. R

Sorry, I don't remember for sure. I think Creative may have had two versions for the four conductor plugs, and the original version that was on the Li've/Audigy cards used the fourth band (from the tip) as the ground. I do know that the tip would carry either the front channel output or the S/PDIF output depending upon whether you were sending a decoded or encoded signal out. As I recall though, you could use a monaural two conductor cable if you were sending a S/PDIF encoded bitstream from your source (i.e. your laptop.)

  • Problem with Megaworks 510D Sub

I have the Megaworks 50D speakers and the problem is at a normal listening volume the subwoofer does not work and the sound has a slight static noise in it. The static noise accompanies the sound coming through the speakers. When there is no sound there is no static noise. When I turn the volume up or just the bass up, the subwoofer comes on and the static noise goes away. At the normal volume level, sometimes the sub will come on if its a bassy song or bassy sounds but its intermittent. If there is not much bass material then the sub does not work at all. When I say "come on" I don't mean that the sub's power light comes on in the back. That light is always on.
The sub has a separate level knob on it and when I adjust it the sub comes in and out randomly. I think this is a separate problem with the knob though.
Could these two problems really be the same problem (with the sub knob)?
Please help.Message Edited by Zertman on 01-24-2008 12:49 PM

You most likely have the same problem that i have. it isnt a problem with the sub. the bash amp or some part of it inside the sub box is starting to break or is broken. The sound will sound different coming through the sats and the sub, since the sub only plays lower frequencies..but im pretty sure it is the same squeal type noise that comes out of both... whichever channel has the loudest volume in the music/game/movie content will have the squealing sound.
try turning your sub up higher and the whole system volume up high.... all speakers should make the sound if played at high volume.. i fixed the problem by opening up the sub and poking around at the various capacitors and things... and it was fixed for two weeks. then it went bad again.
the speakers sound great when played quietly though! its still usable..just only at very low volume levels. oh well.. i bought a logitech z5500 system to replace it.. and just pluged the megaworks sats into it instead of the logitech speakers. seems to work ok..but i wish the z5500 had the "treble defeat" switch on it like the z50. i also wish the z5500 sub sounded as musical as the 50D sub. oh well at least it shakes the house down.

  • Megaworks 510D---Is the amp starting to go out???

I've had this system for about a year now, and it has performed well up to about 3 days ago. I have the system hooked up to my Creative Soundblaster Audigy MP3+ sound card through the digital out. My computer volumes are set to about 50%, and I keep the volume control at about 2-o-clock. Here is my problem....A few days ago when I turned my speakers up a little past halfway playing an MP3, the higher ranged notes were coming out as a very distorted, high static, screaching noise. I tried reducing the volume, and it went away. So at some point in the volume band, my speakers start distorting like crazy. It has never done this before. One thing I am sure of is that my MP3s are CD quality, and I have taken good care of these speakers. What could be my problem? Is the amplifier going out?
Any help, good or bad news, will be greatly appreciated, Thanks

I have the exact same problem with my 50D. Squealing sound whenever sound volume goes up past a certain level. It is not channel/speaker specific. if the center channel happens to have voices or sounds playing through it that break the "threshold," it will squeal. if the sub has some low frequencies that are moderately loud, it will squeal, etc, etc.
This means it is definitely related to the amp. Magically, i fixed the problem once by openinng up the subwoofer enclosure and poking at things inside, trying to see if anything was visually wrong with it.. like the big "Danger High Voltage" transformer and other things (unplugged, of course).
But i didnt really DO anything..
When i put it back together, it was magically fixed!! this means that it COULD be a loose connection somewhere! that means maybe some shaking, poking and screw tightening might fix the problem.
however, it could also be some kind of voltage build-up that i fixed by touching it... maybe it wants to be grounded.. i dunno. if that were the case, there would be a 3 prong plug on the AC input, not a 2prong. Alas, the fix only lasted about 2 weeks, and the squeal came back.. it was really obvious as soon as i flipped the power switch it makes the digital squeaking sound. You guys did actually help me though!!! I was about to buy an old SB live or Audigy card to try the digital input instead! good thing i found this forum! Time to look at the logitech z-5500 or maybe a cheap 5channel amp..

  • Soundworks megaworks 5.1 510d help!.

    hi all
not sure if my speaker are fautly or something. when i turn the volume to 50% ish the sound get distorted/cracking sound. i have also try different soundcard & pc and still i get same result.
when i use other speakers i get no distorted/cracking sound.
my current soundcard is audigy 2 zs

If this doesn't happen on other speakers, then that must mean that your MegaWorks are messed up. If you can still send them in for repair, do so.

  • Creative Megaworks 250D 2.1 THX: How can I find a new remote control & spare satellite(s)?

    Hi all,
For years, we have owned and used one remarkable speaker set from Creative:
The Creative Megaworks (Cambridge Soundworks) 250D 2.1 THX-certified speakers!
I have no complaints. The sound this small 2.1 set produces is amazing! The 300 watts (RMS) power can shake the whole house - x50W + 2x75W are more than enough! Movies, music, games, everything sounds great - bass is deep and clear, mid-range is good, high frequences are clear! There's no noise and no distortion (I have connected the system to an SPDIF digital connector on my sound card), the Signal-to-Noise ratio is 99 dB, and the frequency response of the set is extremely good, too!
But I have a problem, now. We have broken, by accident, one of the satellites. Now I have only one satellite, and the bass/amplifier with the remote control... Looks like a . system... ;-)
This system was a present for us. Maybe we were lucky, but I am very happy with the build quality of this Creative spaker set. Until we have broken one of the satellites ourselves, yesterday, everything was OK, and the sound it produced was amazing all these years...
I tried to contact a Creative representative, asking if we can maybe order one (or two) spare satellites fot this set, but the only reply (up to now) was:
"You are out of warranty period. Buy a new speaker set."
    Well, we could, I guess...
    But:
First: Creative does not have (at present) a similar model, 2.1, THX certified, with digital (SPDIF input), 300W+ RMS, 99 dB Signal-to-Noise.
Second, to throw away such an amazing set just because there's one satellite broken? That would be such pity! :-(
I'd like to buy one (or two) new 250D satellites. I was thinking even that, in the worst case, I can maybe try to order 2 satellites from a Creative Gigaworks S750 set. They have very similar characteristics, 70W rms power, 8 ohms, so maybe this'll work. I was trying to check today if two satellites can be ordered, but with no luck up to now... :-(
Does anyone have any similar experience? What do you do if you accidentally have broken up one satellite from a 2./5./7. expensi've speaker set? Should you throw away the whole set? Try to find similar satellites?
I hope Creative support will help, but I don't have much hope, at present...
Does anyone have experience connecting an S750 satellite to a 250D system? Can I expect any problems? Or it'll work?
    Finally, just one more question:
    The remote control.
Currently, the remote control unit on our 250D model works OK. But I am a bit worried, if anything happens, that the speaker set can become useless. So I'd like to order one spare new remote control for this model, just in case. Can someone help?
Maybe, even if this speaker set is not produced anymore, a new remote control can be ordered from Creative?
I'd really like to make these 250D speakers produce great sound again!? I am a big Creative fan and Creative 250D 2.1 THX is one of the best sound systems I have ever owned (or heard) and I'd like to do everyting to fix things up...
    Thanks for all the help!
    Cheers! :-)
PS The satellites of the 250D look very much like these. But these Cambridge Soundworks satellites are more powerful (20W RMS); I was even thinking to order a pair of them, but not sure if they'll fit well. Maybe a pair of S750 satellites (70W RMS) is a better idea? But in any case, if I can find a new pair of satellites, what to do with the remote control?... Please, help!

After exchanging several messages with official Creative Support, I feel a bit disappointed... For years, I have believed that Creative is a company that makes amazing audio products. They probably still do, but now that I am a customer who owns an expensive product of theirs, but with expired warranty, they don't want even to suggest a solution that can work for both parties!
Why is Creative Support so un-supportive? :-( I am still a Creative customer, after all, right?
My communication with Support went nowhere. After it was established that our 250D system is out of warranty period (it is only 2 years, btw), they refused to sell me a replacement satellite (even if they still may have some left in stock, for such cases)!
Finally, I found S700 satellites on ebay and I hope that 2 of them will fit well with the 250D system. Impedance of 250D satellites is 8 ohms (S700 satellites are 8 ohms, too), power is almost the same (250D satellites are 75W rms, and S700 are 70W rms), Signal-to-Noise of both systems is 99 dB, and frequency response is similar, too (250D satellites should be around 50Hz - 8 kHz, I think, and S700 should be around 50Hz - 20 kHz).
Well, my final 'point of worry' was that if anything happens with the remote control, we won't be able to switch on/off the system, even if the sub/amplifier works. So, I tried to ask Support just to sell me one new remote control, if they can. To sell, not to give for free, mind this! ;-)
    They refused!
My e-mails are either left un-answered, or the only kind of reply I get is 'We can offer you 10% off our new products'. Well, I don't want to buy a whole new expensi've system, if I can just get 1-2 replacement parts for my old one, and have it working for years! :-)
(Imagine you buy an expensive DSLR camera, you break the LCD screen, and imagine how Canon or Nikon refuse to sell you a replacement LCD, because you're out of warranty! I can't imagine that!)
Well, with Creative it looks like this works only this way: Buy a new system. While speaker system is within its warranty period, Creative may replace defecti've and/or broken parts. Once system is out of warranty period, you can simply throw the system away, as Creative will not sell you replacement parts, no matter how politely you ask (and no matter if such parts are available at Creative or not)!
I hope I will be able to use our 250D system for some more time (after the satellites arrive). I don't know how I can find a new remote control, just to be on the safe side.
And I am not sure I will buy Creative product next time. I will carefully look around and maybe will pick up a product from a company which will offer me not only warranty support, but out-of-warranty support, too. That would be wise.
I like how the high-end Creative speaker systems sound. I simply cannot understand how this company can be successful, if they make such great products, but then refuse to help its customers, when they have problems... :-(

  • Problems with my megaworks 5.1!!..pls help

hi there everyone.i own a set of megaworks thx 5.1 speakers which i bought nearly 3 years ago.everything was fine and smooth while i was using the speakers, until recently, to my disappointment, when i switched on the power supply, the led on the remote was lit on green( it was supposed to be on standby mode once u have plugged off the speakers right?), which really got me baffled for a while.then suddenly, there was a loud clipping sound and the set turned off on its own.i suspected the fuse was blown and checked it, and really it was blown.so, i changed it , exactly of the same type of fuse.but again, in seconds, there was a loud clipping sound and it went off again...again and again i tried till i gave up.i bought this set in kuala lumpur and i wonder how could i get this fixed and where should i bring this thing to...and by the way guys..if u ppl have any idea what;s wrong with my set, plz do tell me...hope u guys can help...

  • Megaworks THX 250D - problem with SPDIF?

Hello everybody, I hope someone can shed some light on a strange phenomenon I'm experiencing with my Megaworks THX 250D speaker system. When connected to my computer using SPDIF, the speakers produce a short, loud "cracking" sound everytime any audio playback is started. After that everything works just fine, but when you're clicking through some folders in your file explorer, every click generates a windows system sound and thereby a loud "crack".When I use the normal analog audio jack, everything works as expected. My computer is based on a Gigabyte GA-P35-DS4 mainboard (Rev .) which has a Realtek audio chipset onboard (Realtek ALC889A codec, High Definition Audio). The latest Realtek driver is installed (Version 6.0..5497). Any idea would be appreciated.

The Megaworks THX 250Ds don't support Dolby Digital input. They're extremely good analogue speakers. The SPDIF output mode is for receviers or speakers which support compressed (lossy) audio decoding.
There would be no point in using SPDIF unless you were connecting to a home theatre receiver or a speaker system with digital input.
What you're experiencing is normal for analogue speakers. As for quality improvements with digital connections, that's debatable though it does depend on your soundcard.

  • Sony TV + Creative Soundworks Megaworks 250D 2.1 THX Speakers = HUM

I have a Sony KV29-LS60 TV. This TV has an audio out. When I have the TV connected to my Creative Soundworks Megaworks 250D 2.1 THX speakers, i can hear the sound, but there is also a loud hum coming from the speakers. When i connect my DVD player to the speakers with the same wires, there is no hum. Thus the wires are ok i think. When i unplug the antenna cable the hum remains. So the antenna cant be blamed too.
Can anybody think of a solution to this problem ?

I suspect your tv audio out grounding is at fault or even poor solder joint at the RCA to circuit board.

  • Megaworks THX 550 not working...someone help?

I have the megaworks thx 550 system. never had a problem until the other day when i had it on and it "popped" and stopped working, the power light started blinking for a bit but then it just stopped all together. won't even turn on now, is this something i have to get fixed or am i just S.O.L.

Make sure the settings your email provider needs are correctly set up in Mail. The server names, ports, etc., have to be set up correctly. Usually the info will be online. If you look in their support area, you may even find specific instructions for setting up Mac Mail.
Are you saying you're using Outlook as well as Mail? The "outlook account" comment is a little confusing.

  • Megaworks THX 2.1 250D with Playstaion 3

    Hi guys
I'm thinking of buying a PS3 (the 40Gb version) and running it on my monitor and external speaker system.
My speaker setup is the "Cambridge Soundworks Megaworks THX 2.1 250D" which has a Digital SPDIF (RCA) input, where as the PS3 outputs in Optical TOSLINK.
I'm quite the noob when it comes to this kind of stuff so i'd like to know if this setup would work and what i would need to buy in-order to get it working.
    Many many thanks!

    el_salvad,
If headset works fine with the soundcard, it sounds like the speaker is faulty. Have you try testing the speaker on another audio source or your other computer that's loaded with the Sound Blaster Live card.

  • Creative MegaWorks thx 2.1 250D probs

Hi everyone.... I got these set of speakers through the post today, and they look the buisness....problem is that i cant get them to work with my pc.....i connected the speakers to an old walkman, and the sounds coming through, so the speaks must be ok. And my pc works ok with my old set of speakers. do these set of speakers need a sound card or something? Im trying to run them off the integrated sound on my asus a7n8x-e deluxe motherboard.......any suggestions...

MrHenderson , hissing from speakers is coming only when they are turned ON and no matter how u set volume , bass , treble or push MUTE button hissing is always there with the same intensity. When i connect headphones to speakers remote control hiss is gone (in headphones). Also i connect each individual satellite speaker to portable CD player and there`s no sign of a hiss , just like it`s supposed to be. I agree that "normal" hissing is presented in every audio system but u can hear it only when your ear is very close to speaker.Hissing coming from MegaWorks i can hear from 10 meters , now imagine sitting in front of a computer.Like i said , my first set of MegaWorks didn`t have that hissing at all , just normal hiss which u can`t hear sitting in front of a computer.First set was OK (until they burned) and i paid for them 290$ , when i get replacement for new set price was 90$!That is quite significant price drop which leads me to conclusion that CREATIVE start using cheaper meterials and components for building MegaWorks 250D. I think the first series of MegaWorks 250D was better quality.Harvey got a second set with the same hissing problem , that just confirms it. Harvey, i agree with everything you said. MrHenderson i agree about that running-in but i think this is reserved for Hi-Fi systems over .1000$ price. My first MegaWorks 250D sounded the same from the first day.Sometimes i was listening music with volume set to MAX and didn`t have any problems. I was always cautioned to not add to much bass which will cause distortion because we all now how loud this speakers can play. After 0- months of use they burned out. But when it comes to for some reason amplifier overload or overheating souldnt the amplifier have some kinda overload-overheating protection?
Now , all i need is another replacement with new set of MegaWorks 250D with the same hissing problem like Harvey!
